With news today that Torii Hunter is going to the DL, the American League has added Nelson Cruz to the AL All-Star roster. Since Hunter was a player selection, the replacement for him had to be the next person in line among player voting. That would be Mr. Cruz. No word on whether he might be a late addition to the Home Run Derby, but the dude does have 20 homers.
Also, it is still possible that Ian Kinsler could end up an All-Star. Dustin Pedroia’s wife is having pregnancy complications and he may have to excuse himself from playing to be with her. If so, Kinsler and New York’s Robinson Cano would be the most logical choices. But, since Pedroia was elected by the fans, that replacement decision would be in the hands of Tampa Bay and AL manager Joe Maddon.
*makes grumbling comment about him not playing for three days in a row*
wow- I didn’t know he finished so high in the player voting. I hope he’s in our lineup tonight.
Well, go Nelly!
Good job on making the player selection list! Hope he has a great time, and that he competes in the Derby.
wonder how cruz got more votes from players than byrd.
Because up until this point Cruz had been a full time player while Byrd was platooning. That and 20 HR will get you noticed by the players
Congrats Nellie. Has played good D as well and everyone in league knows not to test arm. Hopefully he can start getting consistant playing time because he has talent to make All Star game consistently. Ber no one had 2 Ranger outfielders making All Star game coming out of Spring Training. We need to decide if Byrd is going to be resigned. If he is great but if not he needs to be moved in a package because of outfield depth and Cruz is long term guy who should play everyday
Cruz made it over Byrd because Byrd was a write-in and Cruz was actually on the ballot.
Glad to hear that Nellie’s made it to the AS game–I voted for him over Hamilton. I don’t get why he’s been out of the lineup for three games. With Murphy, Byrd, Cruz, Hamilton and Jones in the mix, they can play in the outfield for three days, DH one or two other days, and sit down and be available for pinch-hitting and late-inning defensive replacement the other day. I’ve always thought that Washington’s done a great job of keeping everyone fresh and in the games. Is there something else going on here that we are not hearing about?
