8:16: Pool remains open until 9:10 p.m. The Rangers lineup vs. RHP Brandon Morrow: 2B Ian Kinsler, 3B Michael Young, CF Josh Hamilton, DH Andruw Jones, 1B Hank Blalock (3-for-4, HR vs. Morrow), LF Marlon Byrd, RF Nelson Cruz, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, SS Omar Vizquel and pitching for the Rangers. … RHP Scott Feldman.
8:19: David Murphy is not in the lineup tonight because of what appears to be a slight strain on his right index finger. He bent the finger back while trying to make a sliding catch on Ichiro Suzuki in the eighth inning last night. Manager Ron Washington opted to sit him down even before batting practice began. Washington had planned on sitting Nelson Cruz, the All-Star, for a fourth consecutive day because he is going with the hot hands right now and Murphy has been the hottest among the outfielders. … There is nothing wrong with SS Elvis Andrus. Washington just wanted to get INF Omar Vizquel a start in this series and tonight seemed to be the best fit.
8:31: As I go off to eat dinner, I leave you with this and I’m not sure if it’s a Gay/Not Gay Question or Old/Very Old Question: I was on the way to Safeco Park today and tuned the XM radio in my rental car (Thanks Wick!) to the 80′s station (because Margaritaville Radio was playing something I wasn’t interested in). Anyway, this came on.
And I got happy. What’s the verdict?
9:31: If you are watching at home, did you think Nelson Cruz should have been able to cut that ball off?
9:36: Hank Blalock’s last three at-bats against Brandon Morrow: A walkoff double on May 13, a homer to lead off the ninth inning on May 14 (preceding Chris Davis’ walkoff homer) and a homer to start the second inning tonight. Blalock is 9-for-16 (.563) on the road trip.
9:45: Congrats to Longhorn Matt who won the homer pool tonight with his pick of Hank Blalock to hit a bases-empty homer in the second. Free Stuff coming your way, Matt.
9:48: Scott Feldman has pitched no less than five and no more than seven innings in his last 16 starts, dating back to last year. This amazing run of consistency is the highest number of these kinds of starts by an AL pitcher in more than 50 years. In all of baseball, only Tim Redding, who went 18 such starts in a row for Washington last year, has had a longer streak. Feldman needed 23 pitches in the first inning, but threw 13 in the second. For him to see the 8th for the first time in his career as a starter, he’s going to have to keep it at about 13 pitches per inning the rest of the way.
9:57: Michael Young’s three run homer was the Rangers first at-bat with runners in scoring position this series. Last night, the Rangers did not have an official at-bat with RISP (there was a walk and a caught stealing on the two occasions the Rangers had a runner advance past first). It was the first time since 1973, the Rangers have not had an at-bat with RISP in a game. In five ABs with RISP this month, Young has three hits and has produced eight RBIs.
11:01: Scott Feldman going to the mound for the seventh with 88 pitches, which means he’s thrown 65 in the last five (a 13-pitch-per-inning pace). I believe you may recall I said something about that 13 pitch-per-inning-pace earlier tonight – if Feldman wants to complete the seventh for the first time in his last 17 starts. He’s got the bottom third of the order. And if he does that quickly, I wonder if Ron Washington will let him start the eighth. He did throw 116 pitches on June 30. He could go another 20-25 past where he’s at right now.
11:13: Though I didn’t report it earlioer like I should have, Derek Holland’s appearance in the bottom of the seventh does nothing to kill his chances to start on Sunday. They were dead before the game ever began. Manager Ron Washington said Dustin Nippert will start that game.
11:29: And now Jason Jennings comes in to face Franklin Gutierrez with two men on and no outs. Jennings has allowed eight of 16 inherited runners to score. Never easy.
11:39: Jennings has allowed 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) inherited runners to score. Currently ranks third from the bottom of the 41 AL qualifying pitchers. Only former Rangers Ron Mahay (57.9 percent) and R.A. Dickey (66.7) are worse.
11:56: Heading to the post-game show now.
Smoak is not taking to AAA well.
So far he is 0-2 and is hitting .056.
Davis is 2-2 with 2 RBI. Both hits were singles and both scored a run.
I imagine he will be back about a week after the AS break if this continues.
Perez had his normal outing in hickory.
5 innings 4 hits, 2 runs, none earned, 2 BB and 4 K’s.
Sometimes I don’t understand Wash at all. What other manager would bench a guy on pace for 40-100.
The same manager that would bench a player as he makes the allstar team.
I don’t think there’s any way Davis comes back that fast. Probably Sept. 1.
I am tired of seeing Omar every time we turn around! He just played Wednesday!
I sure as heck hope Davis comes back up as soon as his hitting is back to normal. He was sent down with the plan of fix your swing and get back up here. I don’t want to see Blalock at first for the forseeable future.
I dont mind the omar start, he will get his games and this is a logical spot for him but cruz would be sitting his 4th game in a row if not for an injury.
Dan, why not before Sept.1?
Nothing about the jammed finger until Cruz makes all star team. It would be impossible to sit Jones or Byrd.
About Omar…I just think that a key to beating the M’s is keeping Ichiro off the bases and we didn’t put the best lineup out there to do that.
Borbon so far is 2-2 with a walk and 3 SB.
The pre-game and DMN are showing Andrus playing?
Davis adds a sac fly and another RBI, smoak grounds out.

Assuming he keeps hitting, I predict that Davis will be back no later than 8/1/09. [Earlier if they manage to trade Hank.]
@ Evan
Not Gay / i had the same feeling when i heard “Take on me” by Ah-ha the other day
We always new that Davis could hit Triple AAA Pitching.
If hank continues to hit well and davis continues to hit we have the option of trading hank if we get a good return.
Memaw, after last year he showed he can hit MLB pitching also.
Davis can hit. He has hit at every level (including the big leagues). He just needs to get himself straightened out. He’s not like Cruz was – he hit AAA, but did nothing up here. CD will be OK once he regains his confidence.
@scooper: i hope your right..pulling for that guy, the team could use CD from last year
EVAN’S DINNER POOL
Pasta
alfredo sauce
Large Serving

licked it clean
evan, your liking the song was not gay. your taking the trouble to post the video was.
is anyone else surprised that cruz got more player votes than Adam Lind, Jermaine Dye or Nick Markakis????
Not really. Cruz started hot. A lot of people would have heard his name then. And they see his HR totals.
He’s doing the homerun derby too…
Not gay, not old… just an example of really, really poor taste.
Pretty gay, just like emoticons
@raoul: what is it that you so dislike about emoticons?
Poveda in frisco, 6.2 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned, 2 BB and 2 K’s.
@Rangers Fan – wouldn’t that lineup include Vizquel at 2b?
@LOTR- which line up?
Their inherent gayness
the one best designed to keep Ichiro off the basepaths.
haha uhh no. That would not include him at 2nd. Kinsler makes plays Omar just can’t make anymore and he has kept errors to a minimum.
Really? I’d say Kinsler has become a good 2nd baseman in the field, but I’d still rate Omar up in the top 20 of middle infielders with the leather in all of baseball.
He doesn’t have the speed, the range or the arm Kinsler has at this point. I like that he’s here as a mentor but that’s the extent.
@ALL: Thanks for weighing in on the video. Ernie may have put it best.
As for Chris Davis, I think that the intent would be for him to be back sooner rather than later. I would not be surprised to see him back in the lineup before August 1. The Rangers just want him to decompress and get his swing back.
@Steve the Dog: Wrong on the dinner pool. Clam chowder and a salad with blue cheese crumbles and a little bit of smoked salmon. I’m actually trying to eat a little better. Not much, but a little.
@ Evan
What was for dinner?
Maybe I’ll fare better in the home run puget sound
Glad we wasted lead off single from Kins in…a long time.
ugh sick…he Tom puts it best. He gets so many cheap hits.
Moreland is at it again 3-4 with 3 RBI he is hitting 327.
Nice start.
So much for getting an early lead.
@Steve the Dog: I HATE Alfredo Sauce. Want something red or green (pesto) on pasta. Not cream.
@ Evan
Love Nellie, but would he be the outfielder most likely to be trade bait, and does the All Star addition make his value any higher?
What are your thoughts?
Just wanted to let you know Yankees are up 3-0 on angels in first.
Yankees up on Angels 3-0 in the first.
OH..haha. Thanks part-timer. lol.
@Evan – do you know Mike Shropshire well at all? I picked up Tuna Went down to Texas, and it’s pretty awesome. It’s no “Seasons in Hell,” but, then again, the only better baseball book I read than that was Ball Four.
I’ll give it my sports book of the day nod.
Why do we need to look at shots of a train every 5 seconds?
Davis drew a 8 pitch walk.
Davis also just drew an 8-pitch walk. Things have gone awry for OKC though…11-5
If this game gets close to the record, I’m deducting 10 just for people thinking the same thing at the same time.
Do I dare say that CD would have had that?
@last: just because we think alike doesn’t mean it shouldn’t count!
MARINERS JUST SCORED BECAUSE THE FOUL POP WAS NOT CAUGHT
I just thought the same thing Scooper…
I am with you scooper
Griffey scores from first? …Really?
If this game gets close to the record, I’m deducting 10 just for people thinking the same thing at the same time.
Cruz took a horrible angle on that ball
Smoak draws a walk.
and Cruz takes a horrible route on the Gutirrez double costing us a run
We are going to have to really get on it to get the record.
I’ve had a bad feeling about tonight all day…
@Evan- Why does Jones stand straight up on the first of every at-bat, almost to say no matter what I’m not swinging. How does that accomplish anything?
Nice shot… Blalock is upping his value every day!
Come on hank, up that trade value!
OK, Hank’s even for the day.
hank has been tearing it up
@evan: yes, I thought Nellie should have cut that ball off. He took a really bad angle (as almost everyone has already said).
@RAT and obagain: Make that -11
Good for Hank. Now, lets watch the rest of our lineup go down in order, seeing an average of 2 pitches per at bat.
No worries, Hank has another homer up his sleeve to keep the game close, right?
@RAT and obagain: I’m thinking exactly the same thing about Hank.
@ Evan
What was the outcome of Marlon’s phone call?
Imagine if we put cruz and nippert in a possible halliday trade.
Add poveda and Kiker.
I wonder if that would work for toronto?
Nippert and cruz are still cheap.
Problem is that they have 8 guys who are as good as nippert. Cruz can be a piece, but you’re still losing one of Smoak/Holland/Feliz/Perez – if not 2.
@obagain: how about Hunter? His trade value should be pretty high right now.
@scooper: see the 2nd sentence of my 9:36
@last: if it takes 2 of that group, I don’t think I do it.
I would let smoak go but thinking about it, can we trade smoak, he has to be in the system a year before he can be traded, I think he signed on aug 16th.
nippert has tons of trade value
Smoak and Holland are untouchable for me. I read somewhere they would also want to include Andrus and to that I say, H NO! It has also has been reported you would have to take on Wells salary as well. We will not do that.
If I am giving up hunter and cruz they are not getting much else.
No top 5 guy, that is for sure.
If Toronto is looking to dump more salary along with Halladay, then I would think it would be a no-go for the Rangers. It doesn’t look like we are in any financial position to take on salary.
RF, I say keep him if that is what they want.
That sounds like their pipe dream, if they could ask for the sky what could they get.
I think you could do Cruz/Hunter/Smoak and then a couple 2nd tier guys.
Unless TOR subsidizes his contract to a great extent, I don’t think I’d do Andrus for Halladay 1 for 1.
@Steve The Dog: There has been no phone call with Marlon Byrd. A report on Yahoo Sports yesterday first said Byrd was going to have a conference call with MLB investigators to discuss his supplement supply. Later in the day, Yahoo reported that the meeting was canceled. Byrd said yesterday that he has not been told anything about a meeting and so, to me, there was no story there. Apparently, Yahoo had some bad information.
hunter + cruz + a minor prospect. yep, that should do it for an ace.
@obagain: throw in a catcher?
Scooper, if they are dumping salary they have to accept a lessor package of talent.
If they think they can add an 11 Mil player and still get 5 top prospects they need to put down the pipe.
I don’t care if they want to give me the whole team for free, they aren’t getting Elvis Andrus.
@ Evan
Thanks for the update, i hate allegations
Moreland singles and is now 4-5 with 3 RBI.
He will have to get noticed soon at this pace.
The good news is with Cruz getting caught stealing, Salty gets to start over with an 0-0 count! (I’d use a smiley to indicate my sarcasm, but apparently they’re inherently gay)
@obagain: does it really matter if they would take a lesser package of talent? If they are looking to dump Wells’ salary, we don’t seem to be in a financial position to do it.
also – if you are a DISH Network subscriber, don’t live in a Ranger market, and voted in the last chance voting, you should check your email – because you get a free preview of MLB.tv from the 11th through 21st. I believe there’s potentially 4 Ranger games there.
Of course, there’s an Extra Innings preview on most cable providers and directv at the same time. But us DiSH losers don’t get it, and can’t buy it.
Scooper, I know we couldnt but I believe that is just a floater to see what the reaction is.
You will see 100 smoke screen stories before he is traded, toronto has to use all the leverage they can.
The Braves traded Frenchy for Church.
Forget about talent, in ATL it’s PR Gold. Acquired another Church and got rid of a Frog? The AJC may do a story on them now.
HELLS YEAH!
I’m calling a Hamilton homer
way to go young
Good to see from Kins…a single and a walk. What’s the latest on this Kinsler possibly replacing Pedroia thing?
YOUNG!
Fan kinda got in the way for Ichiro
Minor league trivia.
What ranger player is batting 236 but has a OBP of 1.536?
Now THAT’s what an All-Star looks like.
@obagain: I understand that. I’m also not quite sure how you and I got into this conversation. It actually sounds like our thinking is pretty similar.
@OBagain – we have someone who gets on base 1.5 times for every time up?
@obagain: Moreland
I ment OPS not OBP sorry.
Prediction:
Hanks Homies will make a return to the ballpark after the break
Moreland is hittind 331.
@RangersFan: I don’t think so. Moreland’s average is higher than that.
@obagain: Whittleman?
@oba: Palmiero
Scooper, we tend to do that a lot, not sure why.
Well it went along with the prior theme…
@obagain: can we call a truce?
Scooper, that is right, how can your average be that low and still get on base like that.
Tonight he is 0-2 with 3 BB.
I’m gonna say Pudge
Sure, I think it is because I love to debate, sometimes I am still debating even after we agree.
you are confusing OBP with slugging %.
it’s okay, kids do it all the time
@obagain: and he is starting to hit some home runs. With some pop in his bat and all of those walks, the average doesn’t feel quite so bad.
I thought it was Clark
If whittleman could just raise his average to 260, with those walks he would be a huge asset.
Not to be a contrarian, but wouldn’t it have been pretty difficult for the guys to have had an AB with runners in scoring position in Mike Witt’s perfect game?
@raoul: actually, he meant OPS (NOT slugging percentage). he corrected himself at 9:54 pm.
I wonder if the rangers are thinking about moving perez up, I like the idea but I hate that it would be to bakersfield.
@ Evan
I am amazed at your 9:57 blog post, Wow how did you ever dig up that fact
has anybody noticed that all 9 of feldmans outs have come on ground balls tonight?
Lamar, not really.
An error on a throw to first sails into the stands you have a runner at 2nd with the perfect game alive.
Dude! I just saw Jay Buhner!
ernie, that is why the improved defense is so valuable, that is what feldman does.
@ernie…yes I think that’s typically what he gets, particularly weakly hit ones.
Nope, that’s a no-hitter dude… a perfect game is 27 up, 27 down.
Perhaps 28 – not sure the scoring of a dropped 3rd strike, pass ball.
A perfect game is 27 up, 27 down. A no-hitter survives an error, but not a perfect game. Doubting myself, I looked up the boxscore, no Es for the Angels in that game.
Davis K’ed on a foul tip.
@obagain: move Perez up and see how he reacts. I think we’ve seen with Holland that it is not a bad idea for our pitchers to have some adversity in the minors.
Trivia
Answer
I know Fenway Park and in Pittsburgh one year, what was the third?
scooper, I agree, he had proven he can get hitters out in A ball, give him a challange.
@Steve: I didn’t Rangers PR whiz kid Rich Rice did. He’s good. No, great.
@Evan
Give him and good ole John Blake an attaboy for me
Put Ian in the HR Derby… I’m not worried abt hin losing his swing for the 2nd half
what the heck
UGH ADRUS WOULD TAKE THAT BALL!
HAHAHAHA, terrible play… Byrd should have had that one.
I cannot believe that Byrd stopped on that one!
brutal play by byrd. why did he stop
Andrus, my bad…
@Evan
how do you get your hands on these random nuggets like the RISP thing from last night? You didn’t sell your soul for them or anything, did you?
That’s on Omar too..he bolted after that ball. Something to be said for continuity in the defense. Elvis takes shallow balls the majority of the time.
Byrd has to call off the other fielder unless he is sure he cant get to it.
@RAT: does that mean that you are GLAD it was a terrible play?
@All: Strike the note about the no at-bats with runners in scoring position. Lamar does make an excellent point. Mike Witt’s season-ending perfect game in 1984 would have meant no runners in scoring position because nobody reached base. Sometimes even the search engines we use have gaffes.
Speaking of Whiz Kids – am I the only one slightly disturbed that Michael Jackson’s death coverage… no, wait, Ed MacMahon’s death coverage was exponentially higher than Robert S. McNamara’s was?
First president of Ford not named Ford. Kennedy confidant…
@RangersFan: Standing rule – infielder goes out until the outfielder calls them off. The outfielder does not STOP, expecting the infielder to catch it.
Feldman sure is leaving a lot of balls up . . .
Yanks up 4-1 in the 4th.
…unless the infielder is obviously camped under the ball.
@scooper- I know, but I’m pointing out that Andrus always catches those balls (ones you think would be the left-fielders). Regardless, one of them should be calling the other off.
I wish I was in Seattle….looks nice.
Scooper, that is correct the infielder is blind to the incoming outfielder.
Outfielder should never let an infielder make a tough catch when they can make a resonable easy one.
I think the Rangers and Wash, for all of their maddening decisions they make at times, have handled the SS rotation just beautifully.
Andrus has more range. Still, it is a more difficult play for the infielder and the outfielder should take it if they can get to it. No way should the outfielder stop and expect the infielder to make the play.
Lets add 3-4 runs here.
Tom just made the call, i concur
Thanks, Evan, glad I’m not crazy. BTW, LOVE this blog, it’s quickly become a big part of my Ranger game-watch experience.
oh well
Wow, am I actually rooting for the Yankees tonight? Yes I am!
I just don’t know about bringing Davis back that quickly. If he hits well for 3 weeks at AAA are they really going to believe he’s fixed? Then what happens if they bring him back and he goes right back to hitting .200 with 2 Ks per game?
The Yankees have a shortstop with the last name Ransom…that is a fun name to have. However, he’s only hitting .179.
All I know is that it’s a good time for him and Blalock to get hot.
The former makes the latter more expendable and the latter makes the latter more valued.
Dan, the only thing davis needs is confidence.
If he is hitting above 400 in 3 weeks he needs to be back up here.
@Scooper: I’m not exactly glad the mis-hap happened; I just enjoy a good fielding goof-up every now and then. It’s unfortunate that Nelson Cruz usually accounts for almost all of them though.
@Rangers Fan: That’s funny right there.
I say let Davis stay a bit longer in AAA because Hank is having way better at bats than Davis has the whole season. He works the count and has been hitting the ball to all parts of the field.
@Dan: yes, they are really going to believe that he is “fixed.” He can hit in the big leagues and they know it. He knows it too. He just needs to get his head on straight. Also, he’s already proven he can hit AAA pitching. There is no reason to leave him down there any longer than it takes to get him right (and I’d say 3 weeks is reasonable) – it wouldn’t help him or the Rangers.
Is everyone comfortable with AJ being the full-time DH for now? To me. he seems to be a simple streaky hitter. He’s either on fire or ice cold. I don’t necessarily he should just automatically be given a spot everyday because he got hot for a few games.
@Evan,
What is this free stuff we win in the homer pool, I never received anything for my win on 6/30.
As you requested I sent my “eharmony” profile.
Auditor
Personally, as long as he stays hot I’m fine with Andruw staying in the line-up. If he goes into a slump, get him outta there!
Let’s not forget Hank has swung for the fences and out of his shoes almost every at bat this entire year until he was handed the 1st base job. So he hasn’t been reliable all year and he’s also obviously not near the fielder CD is. So if Davis can come up and hit comparable to Hank, you take Davis all day everyday.
@ALL: After looking again at STATS Pass, the greatest research tool I’ve ever seen (it’s a very expensive pay service), what we’ve discovered is that the service is for some reason not factoring in no-hitters as games in which there were no plate appearances with RISP. It’s very strange because this tool is fabulous and lets you set very specific parameters. You guys figured out the computer was wrong. Way to go!
RF, that is a tough call.
If he has 3 or so games of 0-4 then you put someone else in that spot.
@last of romo- thought the same thing on the Cruz steal. Was the mi cocina bar eating dinner with mrs. jack daddy and explaining why you might “prefer” to run with 2 strikes and 2 outs and not on a 2-0 count. I like wash. I hope that was a case where cruz went on his own.
Also called the MY homerun (even the opp field part). My first call of the year.
@Auditor: I know, I’ve fallen behind on a couple of winners. Could you please email me again. I was first waiting on some of the stuff to arrive and then went out of town. So if you will resend your info, I will promise to get you the stuff.
I never got my homer pool free-stuff either! Oooo, calling fraudulence here! (kidding around, I less-than-three Evan)
As for C Davis, he just needs to learn to lay off the waist high curve-ball that breaks in the dirt. Watch him, he always whiffs at it.
@Lamar: You can fact-check for me any day. Please, please, please, tell all your Rangers-loving friends in PA about us, too. We want to become part of their watching experience, as well. Thanks for tuning us in.
@evan- saw some chatter on a Perez promotion. I’ve been thinking about this recently. Have wondered if he might get the Feliz treatment (straight to AA from low A). I know they want to limit his innings, but they also wanted to limit Feliz’s last year too and that didn’t stop them from moving Neftali up to AA.
What do you think?
Nice play hank.
@RAT: Please re-send your info. I can verify this is not a Ponzi scheme. Many have received their prizes, but some have fallen through cracks. This is good to remind me.
@RAT- I’ve been following his at bats on gameday and he has worked almost every count. Appears to be improving in that regard. The strike zone also appears to be a lot higher at AAA. Weird.
@Rat – Davis will alwasy strike out a bunch and will always be vulnerable to breaking pitches down (most guys are) and he was last year when his year was good.
The problem with Davis this year more than anything, was an ability to consistently catch up to fastballs. particularly up and in. One of the sites (either BBTiA or LSB) had something up that showed his contact rate on FBs and it was the lowest in the league by far, if i recall.
Jack, if you move him to frisco, who do you move to make room?
@Jack Daddy: Difference on Martin Perez is he’s 18 and won’t turn 19 until next season. Feliz was 20 when he was promoted to Frisco. I really don’t think the Rangers are going to push an 18-year-old to Double-A. Even if he moves next year, I mean, that would be pretty much speed-of-light progress.
how dumb am I? I never dreamed you could use t-shirt and Dr Peppers to start a Ponzi scheme.
You’re a genius, Evan
Gay or not Gay time, part II:
Saw The Proposal tonight with my wife. G or NG?
Ok, but how about now:
Liked it better than my wife.
Does it help at all that we saw the 6:15, just so we could get to the bar to watch the start of the Rangers?
RF, the zone is a gameday thing, I have been to a few games and they are not called that way.
Davis is doing everything he should and more, including playing some 3b.
Nice to know he could play a game or 2 if we were in a bind.
Evening all. Broke down and sore from my return to Softball World in Euless. I don’t remember softball hurting so much.
@evan – can you look up the 1st innings of Feldman’s last call it 6-7 starts? Seems like he has been scored on each time, and then settled into a nice groove.
@ Evan (4/15) 9:34: Ian Kinsler about to get his second shot at completing the cycle. He singled last time. He has five consecutive hits dating to last night. … Yep, that’s a cycle. He becomes the fourth player since Gary Matthews Jr. in September, 2006. First one to name the other three in the comments section will get something free. I love giving out freebies.
…. I never got nothin!
It’s not gay if you went with your wife.
Good evening, all. Just got back from the Frisco game. The Riders won 14-3.
@Jack Daddy
Seeing how you are married, I’m gonna have to say Not Gay, just smart….I bet it pays off later
On CD: it’s also nice that he went down there with a good attitude, is working hard, is willing to play 3rd, and is having success.
No, it is. It’s just less gay.
@Jack Daddy: Gay but you get the “at the bar now” exemption…so your good.
@obagain – not sure who is in the rotation with kiker, poveda and Beavan right now. I think Evan answered the Q anyway. But assuming he got a mid-august promotion, could see kiker getting the same to AAA, i suppose.
But i would think kiker and beavan will stay at AA. Poveda is interesting in that he was put on the 40 and they might want to see what he does at AAA going into the winter.
@steve: married is irrelevant.
Cycle
Odibbe McDowell
Rusty Greer
Scott Fletcher???
@obagain- good to know…I think it’s definitely a good thing he can be a DH, 1b and 3b next year. If Omar were to be here again you would be set for your infield off the bench.
…except that it sounds like Mrs. Jack Daddy is a pretty special woman!
Best way to make room on the 40 this winter is to put more youngsters on the 25.
What up DYLAN. Did you have some AA beer?
@steve the dog – already working that angle. waiting for the wife to get the baby sitter out of the house!! might have to miss a couple of innings of the game. Who i am kidding – maybe an AB. Or two, if she’s lucky!
@ Scooper
Your right, I geuss I should have said “with a female”
@Evan – can we get a ruling from fancy stats machine on the longest surname batter/pitcher matchup? I’m pretty sure that GIDP is top 3
Omar looks like that didn’t feel too good. And he’s had a sore shoulder.
Dylan, were the moreland hits good hits or just seeing eye type hits, if you remember.
@jackdaddy
I thought the same thing about Feldman–always a rough start then allows zilch before leaving in the 6th or 7th.
kirkman is one of the other Frisco starters. who i am forgetting as the 5th? is ballard back down there?
Yankes up 5-1 now.
@Last: You send it along, too. Jimminy Christmas, it is a Ponzi scheme. I’ve become Bernie Madoff.
Does anyone else get very nervous when Josh starts talking about winning before the game is over or pitchers not giving up runs, etc. He needs to nip that…
@obagain Ok… I’m not gonna swear to this (I was at the game on a second date with this chick that I sort’ve dig, so there was a lot of second date getting to know you stuff going on that is awesome from a date perspective but not all that conducive to a ton of baseball watching) but I think that Moreland hit a double up the left field line that was as solid as they come. The whole team was hitting tonight (except for Marcus Lemon, as I recall).
@TD – Dude… turns out I knew a bartender out that tonight. Went for the hard liquor instead.
@ Evan
I didn’t geuss right on the homer pool or answer a trivia question…..but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, can I get some free stuff?
pitch count for Feldman?
@Ranger Fan: Absolutely!! I can remember a couple of times where he has said something and it’s like he jinx’s the team . . .
@Last: Given our stats record today, I can’t give you anything official, but I’m going to say it would be hard to beat that one.
@dylan: second date at a ballgame! you might just have a keeper there!
I know! It’s not like it really does matter but still…it’s just like no talking about a no hitter…
yep, ballard is the 5th. he’s already had 1 stint at AAA. So there is flexibility to promote somebody to AA. But I tend to agree with Evan – seems crazy they would move the kid to AA with only 2/3 year in A ball at that age.
Not sure who else my be a candidate. Murphy is a college guy that has turned his year around – he’s probably more likely.
89 pitches thru 6 innings.
Ryans dad, what team you with?
I know a lot of guys that play out there.
If you are sore it means you are playing the right way, keep it up.
Great bunt kins.
That’s a nice bunt.
That is the Ian Kinsler we need to see more!!
THAT A BOY KINSLER! So good to see!
LOVIN the bunt by KINS…GREAT GAME for him.
@scooper… I’ve been on second dates that have been a WHOLE lot worse than this one!
COME ON JOSH…it’s TIME!
1 more run would be really nice.
@alan in SA: Think Feldman is at 85.
@Dylan: Two things, you are possibly being a gentleman, but if you are on here and not still in date mode, well, I’m not sure just how good things went. … But, then again, I’m not the relationship doctor. I haven’t had a second date since Bush left office. The first Bush.
Is Michael Young TRYING to ruin Kinsler’s night?
Sure he got the home run, but he almost grounded into a second double play!
5-2 Yanks in the bottom of the 5th.
@dylan: I wasn’t being sarcastic. If she likes baseball, too, that’s a good start!
good take-out slide by Kins and good hutsle by MY.
5-2 Yanks
OB, I don’t even know the name of our team. I was recruited by a friend and I don’t even know anyone else on the team. Trust me, I didn’t play the right way tonight. Waaay too many errors.
@Evan – I’d like to say it’s me being a gentleman but, frankly, it’s 100 degrees and humid out there. Not exactly my preferred bodily state when attempting to, to extend the metaphor, steal second.
Sure is nice to have the baseball package and be able to just switch channels during commercials to check on the Angels game.
@scooper… Neither was I. I’ve been on some TERRIBLE second dates! This was, most definitely a good one.
@Evan – Is it ok that this thread is turning into the Dylan’s Date Post Game Thread?
It gets better.
Hopefully it is a fun team so you can just relax and have fun.
Did you get a hit?
@Dylan: just ask beer guy – we talk about his dates too. the only reason we don’t talk about Evan’s is because he says he never has any.
Oh yeah, I was 4 for 5 tonight. I don’t judge my performance on offense, just defense.
@dylan/scooper: Oh Sure, the SECOND date at a ball game…. see if she’ll go on the 20th. By then, she’s got her hooks in you!
I think my wife would have agreed to the sewage treatment plant tour with me for our second date if I wanted. Of course, I’m about as handsome and charming as they come (and I lied and said I was rich!)
OB, you play out there?
@last: you sound awfully jaded! I mean, she did marry you!
@LotR – I’m pretty sure that 20 dates and I’ll be sick of her anyway.
Oh, I also had a moment with Cynthia Izaguerra (sp?). I might have been pressed to make a choice between her or my date, but Pete Delkus was there to screw things up for me. I hate weather guys.
i mentioned this last week, but we’ve seen both ends of the uniform spectrum the last few weeks:
Great – SF home whites and LA road greys
Horrid – AZ (with D Backs on the front), the ridiculous padres, the Angels on wednesday (red letter/numbers on top of a red shirt) and now these stupid M tops with the TEAL (Teel?) accents.
I think Scooter wants to make it to the 8th!
ross in spokane tonight.
5 innings, 2 hits, no runs, 2 BB and 5 K’s.
His GO to FO was 8-1.
He may get a promotion also.
39 k’s to 6 BB and keeps the ball on the ground.
Nah. It’s just that I enjoy hyperbole, and one of the greatest joys of being married is the ability to scare guys who are still single.
And we met in 2001, while I was driving a 1988 Honda – She knew I wasn’t rich.
well crap…5-5 in LA
@last: well, you must have done something right if she is still around!
SEE! If Josh and Tom would shut up about getting out of this inning.
Those Angels are annoying. They never just roll over do they?
Ryans dad, no I have to pick and choose games with my shoulder.
I play all over, from waxahachie to plano to white settlement.
Oh, I was serious about the handsome/charming part
@ All
Please say hello to my wife, I am trying to convert her to a baseball fan….I think the interaction of this blog may help
her name is Delilah the Dog
@ALL: Yes, we seem to have many different conversations going on right now (Dylan’s Dates, my lackthereof, Gay/Not Gay, Jack Daddy’s movie reviews, Ryans Dad/OBagain’s softball conversation), but I’m OK with that. It’s like we have our own little community. So when I invite you all to a bowling event (which I’m really thinking of doing), we can all get together then and have many conversations. I look the live blog as part commentary and part ****tail party. You move from one conversation to the next as you see fit.
@ryansdad: and they never will, either!
That’s a bummer… hard not to understand the move to the bullpen with Ichiro coming up, but still a bummer.
I played a couple of years ago down in Waxahachie. Very impressed with the facilities down there.
@ALL: Where does the room stand on the removal of Scott Feldman with 100 pitches to have LHP Derek Holland face LHP Ichiro Suzuki? Ichiro is 2-for-14 against Feldman in his career, including a single to start the game tonight.
@evan
I don’t think I like those kinds of parties…
Hi Delilah.
@EVAN: I was hoping to keep Scooter in there…
@Evan: I’m against it and I LOVE Derek Holland. He did the same thing to Holland last night. Let them get confidence and rip their heart out. Thanks Ron.
Were one of those two hits a couple of innings ago?
I would have let him pitch.
After the double Ichiro just laced past Young, I would have to say I would have stuck with Feldman… you know what they say about hindsight
I’m a little concerned right now . . .
@steve the dog: I don’t know alot about women, but I know having many strangers refer to her as a dog is not good for creating a welcoming environment.
@Evan: Instead of asterisks, DMag needs word substitution. On sandbox.com years, YEARS, ago, a certain Balmer Oriole was “Mike hot dogerson.” Loved it.
@Evan – I think it’s a pretty easy call. In a close game with a runner on and a contact hitter at the plate, go to the fresh arm.
Damn near worked, too.
Not last night..I meant last time Holland was out there.
What the heck MY? That was certainly a playable ball.
It seems like Holland is starting to show just a little emotion out there. Is that new?
Very nice Holland!
NICE job Holland!
Like I said, great move by RON.
Nasty stuff from Holland the past two outings he’s had out of the pen. He’s really progressing.
That was impressive for the kid, no way wash lets him come back out.
I’m also still waiting on an explanation of why we have to fight through another Nippert start instead of Holland.
Got caught up, hello Delilah the Dog
Who gets the call in the 8th, CJ or Holland?
I kinda like Holland coming out of the bullpen for now
Rangers Fan, I’m convinced we are seeing another Nippert start so we can be entertained on The Ticket by the Sterminator saying “Nip” “Nip”
AHAHAHA wow..”Can’t dutch this”…really Josh?
RF, what if nippert only gives you 3 innings again? I like nippert in the pen, not impressed with his starts.
Jones has looked absolutely horrid at the plate the last two nights. I know the first night it was Felix but still.
Ichiro already had a hit off of Scooter tonight, so I’m OK with it. Test the kid – he was feeling good after his last appearance, give him a shot at it. Obviously, this is after the fact, so I already know that the inning came out OK>
@Ryan’s Dad…I thought about calling it a Nip start. haha
that was some cheese by Holland. i think people forget that we have a slow gun in Arlington and that he’s still sitting at 94 this year, touching 96-97, like last year.
I hate holland in pen, but you have to like him as a weapon against lefties late in games.
Hey Evan, can I still get the corner special if I go to the ballpark and buy the tickets with CASH money?? I am not a credit card kind of guy. THinking about going up there tomorrow.
Yay! I just got home to find that I won the homerun pool. I think that the appropriate phrase here would be “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.” And the Rangers are winning, too! Sweet!
@obagain- I agree. I’m saying I would rather have Holland start and not our friend Nip.
Does Holland come back out? I’d let him.
for the HR porch event that is…
3 years later we still get the implosion every time we come to seattle, why?
Aren’t they talking about going sort of starter-by-committee on Sunday? Give Nippert 3 innings, bring Holland in for 3 innings, then let the bullpen get you to the All-Star break…
Congrats MATT.
Now gay or not gay? Matt saying “YAY!”.
Congrats Matt
5-5 yankees/angels, CRAP!
RF, yes, let holland start and put nip in the pen.
@ALL: Forgot about the asterisks. Let’s call it a Meeting of the Minds (sorry fellow Parrotheads). No more ****tail talk. Cracks me up every time. Guess we won’t be able to do any live blogs on badminton because of all the references to the shuttle****. And no rooster impressions, you know because of ****le-doodle-do. And don’t even think about ****ing your head at me.
You know what – at this point, I’m going to be happy to start seeing “The Rangers are too reliant on the long ball” instead of the complaints that they can’t hit at all.
It’s progress, and the team is making it.
I agree with Holland starting rather than Nippert starting.
Let me ask the room this: What if you stick with Holland in a setup role for the rest of the season? With Hunter pitching as well as he is, it would give you some flexibility in the pen for the stretch run.
For the kid it, if he can master the shut down inning doing it one at a time, it would give him a lot of confidence.
I know there’s some concern about him not developing his secondary pitches out of the pen as well, but let Maddux work with him on that as he gains confidence in game situations. Seems like it might be a win-win.
Oh well
The wife got 3 hello’s
said “you are stupid….call me when the game is over” and walked out of the room
@evan: we can’t be ****y, either.
Holy crap! That was a smack.
Holy cow, that went a long way!
A little late, but I called that shot…5 innings late to be exact
Wow what a bomb from Nelson Cruz!!
THANK YOU NELLIE! You better keep him in there Wash.
nice insurance
Does Nellie maybe have the “hot hand” now?
Also, I can’t refer to myself as the **** of the walk after my successful dates.
@TD: I would hope you could. If there is a problem, let me know. I don’t know if this is only an internet special, but if you have an issue getting tix at the special price for our special section on our special night, let me know and we will try to get something taken care of for you. Because we are all about the service. … And Holy Homers, Nelson Cruz. Where has that been?
BOMB!!!!
Evan, can you ask wash why cruz sat the last 3 games and wasnt goint to play in this one except for an injury?
Oh, yeah, it’s been on the bench.
@Dylan: What about CJ?
Let me point out, that I was omniscient on the Cruz hit.
Also, since he’s not a member of the hot-bat set, who sits?
@ Dylan
that is exactly what I was thinking with Holland, a great way to boost his confidence
@EVAN: OK, thanks…..wish I had some of those Nachos right now.
I looked over at my 12yo step son and said I’m putting in the call for Nellie here. And it’s going to be a bomb. I WAS RIGHT and I have a witness. He got up off the floor and blew me up. HAHA
@dylan: if all of our starters were pitching better than Holland, I could see leaving him in the ‘pen. Hunter is doing great, but Nippert? If Holland is honestly not one of our top five options for the rotation, leave him in the ‘pen. Otherwise, run him out there every 5th day.
I called 414 ft on the Nellie shot too, there is hope that I may one day win some free stuff
@Rangers Fan – CJ can’t pitch setup every night. CJ, O’Day, Grilli, Holland, Frankie. That is a salty back of the pen for ANY team to deal with.
OK…come on holland.
Not to interrupt the fun times here tonight, but thought some of you might like to know the Giants’ pitcher Sanchez is taking a no-hitter into the 9th and I believe mlb.com is going to let people watch the 9th for free.
@Evan – Is there a deadline for the tickets for the game on the 21st that the price will be available? I don’t get paid till next Friday.
Jennings is ready
Thanks @idiotbox
oh heck…no no no. no jennings. No! someone else!
What’s the distance on Nellie’s homer?
We have a no-hitter warning….3 outs away for the giants Jonathan Sanchez…..
CRUZ HR: 418 to 420
The plate ump has been very inconsistent tonight. That second pitch was completely inside the box and was called a ball. And Griffey gets a third cheap hit . . .
11:29: And now Jason Jennings comes in to face Franklin Gutierrez with two men on and no outs. Jennings has allowed eight of 16 inherited runners to score. Never easy.
I would have felt more comfortable with Mathis at this point than Jennings, but I guess Wash has no confidence pitching him in a close game.
I am not feeling good about this.
whoa
@Dylan: No deadlines on ticket sales I don’t believe. And besides, I never let something as pesky as funds stop me from buying something I want. On second thought. …
is it just me or does jennings look like Jason Witten a little bit?
I’ve got the SF game up now. It seeems like they have a potential no hitter every night there.
@Evan – True. We aren’t all at teh paygrade of a highly respected local sports beat writer
Crap… emoticon alert.
Nice work so far HIPPY JENNINGS.
wow…Griffey must have no traction left on his wheels these days. I think Benjie Molina might have scored on that play.
also, 7-5 angels
CRAP! and dang yankees…
Wow was Nellie’s homer ever huge.
Jennings with runners on is a joke.
Great call Wash.
@AJ: Yes, upon your suggestion, he DOES look like Witten – ALOT in his mlb.com pic.
I feel good about this. Chris Shelton didn’t even sniff a hit while he was a Ranger if I recall correctly.
And jennings again lets all the inherited runners score.
I dont understand, he has no faith in mathis in a 6-2 game but he will bring in jennings who almost always allows runners to score.
He does it every time. I really think it’s a crapshoot when it comes to what he’s going to do with the pen.
No-no bid just went live for free on mlb.com
no-hitter look in on mlb network…glad that inning is over
Amazingly he doesnt give up many of his runs but he lets inherited runners always score.
I’m guessing the Giants are probably no longer interested in the rumored Sanchez-for-Blalock deal from last year.
oh my people, oh my…
WOW! There was the great defensive play in the no hitter.
Holy crap! Deep drive to center field that was caught at the wall for the second out in the no no.
why do they keep showing eric estrada in the stands?
NO – NO!
HE DID IT!! WOW! ….WOW!
That was AWESOME!
Wow… watching stuff like that never gets old.
I know…that was cool!
@Ryans Dad
Yeah, a little different than the one Buerhle threw huh?
Sanchez got his no-no!
It is great for him but bad for SF.
How do you trade a guy that just threw a no hitter?
The fans would revolt.
It is terrible timing for the FO.
Not to be all melancholy, but to be that good at anything for even one night… wow.
I can’t wait to see that kind of emotion out at the Temple.
C’mon, Frankie! Finish them off!
Oh yeah. The Rangers are playing.
@ Evan
Before we get out of here tonight, I just wanted to say I hope you enjoy your biscuits and honey in the morning. Make sure they don’t get any honey on that shiny dome when they are drizzling from up above.
@obagain: on the other hand, his trade value may never be higher! And with the SF pitching staff, they might be able to get away with it.
I predict a holland no-no at some point in his career.
@Evan – Is there any way you can just go ahead and make your Three Down all Jennings related?
7-6 now in the YANKS/ANGELS game…
Nasty changeup.
@rangersfan: I agree. He is economical with his pitches, so he should have quite a few complete games. And, with his stuff (assuming he continues to progress with his secondary pitches) he should be able to do it.
bases loaded for jeter…2 outs.
What a pitch to Itchy-Ro
Scooper, but how can you justify to the fans that you traded away a kid that has a no hitter?
Boston still raved all last year about buch and he was stinking it up but they still said, yea but he has a no hitter.
I lied..its matsui
@TD: who’s winning?
I can’t believe I’m pulling for the Yankees.
Dylan The Enemy of my Enemy is my friend!
FF, how do you walk him? Be agressive.
I’m nervous. Come on Frankie. Attack them! Quit being cute!
@obagain: Maybe you can’t, but they need bats bad. They are going to have to give up something really good. They already have Lincecum and Cain. I don’t know.
yanks score 1 7-6 now.
Angels winning….sorry.
Agreed OB, you can’t give people chances to beat you. They need to earn it.
Dang Angels coming back and now lead the Yanks 7-6.
Middle of the 7th.
The Enemy of my Enemy’s Enemy is Eric bieniemy
That’s the Fransisco we saw in April and May. If he’s fully back, our late inning situation is one of the best in the league.
Scooper. imagine in 2 year we have holland, feliz and beavan all reaching their ceiling and kiker throws a no hitter, do you trade him?
YES!! B A L L G A M E !!!
Thank you, Frankie!
Thank you much! Good team win…THANK YOU NELLIE!
Boy… Frankie sure did use his offspeed stuff more than I’m used to.
Great game!
Rangers win, Rangers win, Rangers win!
Jonathan Sanchez moves to a dominating 3-8 with that no-hitter…LOL.
Eric Bienemy…Wow, somebody just jumped in the way back machine
Yea Jennings did so bad. Are we still winning? Am I correct in saying that Jennings used to be a starter and was forced into this role. He isn’t a strikeout pitcher. I think he did good. I think he has done well all year with all things considered.
@obagain: I’m not saying yes or no, but I am saying that you don’t just say “He threw a no-hitter so I can’t trade him.” Everything else just depends on the overall needs of the team.
P, he came in with 2 on and both scored, if he holds the win is much easier that it was.
My nerves are shot. Between the no-no and a close game!
only 425 comments tonight, we are slacking.
Great game, great thread tonight…now go YANKEES, ugh, hate saying that.
414* ob.
I didn’t realize that Sanchez actually had a PERFECT GAME into the 8th inning. Then an error on Uribe. Man, that’s a rough way to lose it!
Angels 10-6 now over the yanks. Blurgh.
Dontha know (pablo??) felt bad about that…isn’t he the 3rd basemen?
@RangersFan: Uribe had moved from 2nd to 3rd an inning earlier.
That’s the Free Credit Report.Com guy’s father in that video! lol
I do have to wonder about Wash’s moves on players about to reach a personal goal….pulling Catalanato for a PH when he had a chance for the cycle, same for Vizquel in the bottom 9th with men on base to break Aparicio’s record, at the beginning not starting Cruz after it was announced he made the All Star team, only changing when Murphy was hurt. What gives with that?
