8:03: The pool remains open for another hour of night-time splashing and frolicking.
8:20: I’ve sowed my wild notes. You know the old saying: You can read what I’ve sowed.
9:24: Spending a few minutes crafting the “Postcard From The Road.”
9:32: Great stop by Hank Blalock at first, rolling to grab Ken Griffey’s hard bouncer. But who would have ever thought you would throw a ball behind Kevin Millwood? In past years, it was a task for him to get to first. This year, he’s sprinting. In truth, Blalock has played so little at first base this year, that I think he tried to hit Millwood with the throw instead of leading him. Got to throw in front of the pitcher and expect him to get to the ball.
10:37: Here it is, a Postcard From The Road about the best breakfast I’ve ever eaten.
10:44: Regarding the tag play at second on Ronny Cedeno, think you can make an argument either way. If he did brush the jersey, it was faint, very faint and it’s hard for anybody to see that in real time. The only thing that is surprising is that when the throw beats the runner by that much, I think you are outthinking yourself to try and see if the tag wasn’t made. Because we’ve all watched in slow motion several times and still can’t be sure.
11:11: For those wondering about the call on Marlon Byrd at second base in the top of the seventh, he was definitely out by rule. Rule 7.08 (e) of the rulebook states that … “if a forced runner, after touching the next base, retreats for any reason towards the base he had last occupied, the force play is reinstated, and he can again be put out if the defense tags the base to which he is forced.”
Byrd and Ron Washington appeared to argue that he had a right to the base since he had already touched it and needed to be tagged to be put out. The rule book clearly indicates that the force is back in effect.
11:50: The Post-Game Show is now on the air.
Davis has his first 0fer in OKC, sadly smoak does also and is now down to .045, when do you send him back down, or do you leave him there and hope he gets it going?
@obagain: I’d leave him there and let him work through it. It’s only been, what, 7 games? Let him face some adversity and work through it.
Are you the one who has been bringing up Moreland? I’m convinced. Convinced enough to trade Smoak. Just a thought.
Smoak is 1 for 2 tonight so far. Davis 1 for 3 w/double.
Moreland is one of those guys that every time he moves up he excells but people ask if it was just a fluke.
Remember when kinsler came thru the system and each level people said sure he can hit but he cant keep hitting like this, but he did.
Moreland is an athelete, at one point the rangers wanted to convert him to a pitcher but his hitting is so good they gave up pretty quick and now have him in the outfield.
I dont think that will be his position in the majors, it should be first but I believe he will be in AAA this year and will force the rangers to find a spot for him next year.
cbank, yes in the second game.
u guys knee jerk more than anybody i have ever seen… baseball is abt ups and down… u don’t make judgements off of one game or one week… even one month… when guys get promoted and demoted please realize that these guys are humans and being shipped to another state causes a little shake up in their personal life… give them time… u guys knee jerked when smoak was doing so well and u r doing it now that he is struggling… give him time to adjust…
Evening… Feeling a little gunshy since I reeked havoc over in Bob’s UFC preview thread.
No date tonight, btw… Maybe we should start a Dylan’s next date pool. It could potentially last through the postseason.
jcouch: you knee jerk to people who knee jerk….let them talk if they want to talk. Everybody views thngs differently who crowned you all-knowing?
@jcouch: you generalize way too much.
@scooper – You kneejerk about people generalizing about kneejerking
jcouch, I did not want him promoted yet, he was coming off an injury and wanted him to have a little more time to settle in.
I dont like sending guys down, I will pull for promotions but dont want guys going the other way unless it is nessisary, .043 is getting close.
@Dylan. You need a date.
@jcouch, That voice of reason does not work around here. We want action and we want it on demand. We reserve the right to jump on and off of any wagon and often several times a game if not an inning. We’re funny that way.
@dylan: I absolutely do!
I knee jerk about the Rangers winning. It’s fun.
@Cbank: I absolutely do!
@jcouch: and since when are you the voice of reason?
Is this the UFC liveblog?
Cant we all just get along?
Reds outfielder Jay Bruce broke his write wrist sliding for a ball tonight, and is heading back to Cincinnati to be examined according to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon. The Reds were looking to add a bat before the injury, so it stands to reason that they’d ramp up those efforts now.
Looks like MLTR could use a proof reader.
@All: I can see it’s going to be a lively crowd in here tonight. You’ve all got a little UFC edge to you. Love it.
Now, let’s all knee jerk, generalize, opine and ramble way too much. Is four hundy doable again tonight? On a Saturday night? Going against Sturm? And no sign of Becca or Jack Daddy. Hmmm. The gauntlet has been laid down.
@Obagain, The Rodney King refrain. Padilla called and he says, You’re up next.”
i kneejerk when the doc is testing my reflexes
Evan, I am calling 500+
I think 500 is a totally achievable number.
Also, since this is Bob Sturm’s first live blog, should we be doing some hazing of the UFC thread? I’m just saying we gotta let ‘em know who’s turf they are on.
Davis just K’s.
Is anyone against moving Kinsler out of the 1 hole? .286 last 30 days –OBP!!
Chris Davis is done. He’ll never play organized ball at any level again.
(And I’m including my beer league).
@evan: what’s the official record for a 9-inning game?
@dylan: nice try, but that’s way too over-the-top to be controversial!
Scooper, I think it is 549.
@scooper: Damn.
Heard there was some wild knee-jerking going on around here and rushed right over!
BTW, any fort worth person knows why I am so happy…I enjoyed a large Mama’s Pizza for the past hour. At the one on Camp Bowie. HEAVEN.
Wow! You can say damn, but you can’t say ****y!
I’d like to extend some thanks to @TD for sticking up for me over in the UFC thread.
Rangers Live Bloggers 4 Lyfe!!!
TD, good stuff.
@TD – i moved to San Antonio and I go there when I;m back in town–it’s really good.
@TD – There’s a Mama’s over here in Plano too. Love it.
I knee jerk when doc is testing my prostate
Millwood used his glove, almost.
@alaninsa: TMI
Crap, hope he is okay.
For those of you who had “The Leadoff Batter” in the “How long until Kevin Millwood makes contact with a batted ball with something other than his glove” then you are a winner.
they are all laughing, so he must be OK.
scooper, I agree, some things are better left unsaid.
No problemo Dylan…some just dont get your humor I guess…haha.
I think wash said there was a green mark right on his ribs and that it never touched his hands.
@scooper: All-time record is 588. The 9-inning record is 543.
@Alan: I’ll admit, I laughed at your TMI comment.
@Alan in SA – Rectal humor is always a winner with me, no matter what the other guys say.
I love the open mike in the dugout…too bad it can’t be left on all the time…
tim, I wish they would mic players.
That could get interesting.
543? wow….I thought last night we had it going on a nice roll and it was only around 430 I think…man, tough job ahead.
My son and daughter-in-law just returned today from 3 days in Seattle(and one Ranger game). They fell in love with the summer weather and the whole scene up there.
Evan, are you sure, I could have sworn it was 549.
That would have been a great option pitch it this was football…..
@obagain: they’ll mike players and then edit, but they know better than to do it live.
@evan: we’re out-commenting Sturm’s folks more than 3-1!
tim, they get a couple of good months but make sure they know it rains 200 days per year there.
549 sounds right to me. maybe some comments were added later?
@TD: if this is a pitcher’s duel, we don’t stand a chance of breaking the record.
Sweet! I just found out I don’t have to work in the morning. Probability of drunk posting now at +/- 73%.
Not the 1st inning we were looking for.
Smoak is 2-4 with 2 RBI in the second game so they need to bring him up tomorrow.
obagain: Not a chance of them leaving…I can’t let those grand-daughters (2 and 5) get very far away from us.
Real nice play by MY, there.
@obagain: is that before or after we install Moreland as the DH for the Rangers?
That is a typical millwood first, he struggled but made the pitches when he had to.
He looks much better tonight than the last time out.
@obagain: Thank goodness!
scooper, they get called up together by noon, if not we need to fire JD and Nolan.
Damnit. That’s a bad break.
I was watching an All-Star game on MLB today from the early 80′s…sure was strange not to see advertising on the backstop behind the catcher and ump.
If you stumble, why don’t you go back??
@obagain – After Millwood’s last outing, I’m pretty sure we need to start thinking about replacing the pitching coach.
While at Mama’s Pizza, I signed up my lady friend for the HR pool, if she wins I am going to be so pissed!
@TD: You may have just had the Gay/Not Gay moment of the night. Class? Registering your girlfriend for the HR pool? Verdict?
BTW, the smoak hit was a HR.
@Evan Grant – Depends. Was this date in the first through seventh range? If yes, then not gay. If no then most certainly.
@scooper, obagain: I will check record book later, but who’s counting. I mean, we know 588 is the All-Time Record.
If it is his GIRLFRIEND, how can it be gay? Not very romantic, though!
Evan, I have a gay not gay.
I was driving today listening to oldies and the song my ding a ling came on and I was singing away, then realized I was at a red light with the windows down, very attractive lady in the car next to me was giving me the dirtiest look I think I have ever seen.
@obagain: I’m with you on the noon deadline. Also, we need to fire Rudy for getting CD sent back down to the minors.
@obagain: gay! (and unwise)
@scooper – If we’re adopting the BAD Radio rules to Gay/Not Gay then something can be gay without being homosexual. It’s a small distinction, but an important one nonetheless.
@obagain – Not gay. If she doesn’t get Chuck Berry that’s her problem, not yours.
Scooper, definatly, we need the AAA hitting coach, they seem to hit better with him.
1) Smoak–gotta give him time.
2) Moreland-ditto
3) Davis-Missed him at 1b tonite. Always taught my 1B to toss the ball to the base–not to the pitcher. Hope he gets confidence back.
@dylan: my bad! obviously I misunderstood the rules.
I listened to the streak also, it was a good day for oldies.
@ALL: Even worse, I didn’t want to say ex-girlfriend, but yeah she is……VERY GAY.
@fred: just want to make sure you know that we are sarcastically knee-jerking.
Wait, I mean she’s not gay…thats not why we broke up or I will just shut up now…
@TD: at least you admitted it now – that is a step in the right direction.
Scooper, does that mean I am a knee jerky?
yup.
Sure wish Wash would play Teagarden more…Salty’s bat is really in critical condition at the moment…
Very good AB for elvis.
@TD: please don’t shut up! we are going for the record. And it would be really nice to break it on the same night that the UFC live blog is going.
Elvis scores easy.
Kins is looking so much better.
Now josh singles to right to score kins.
Do we think that not making the All-Star team was a wake-up call?
@Rockwall Tim – I totally agree. We should send Salty down.
Dylan, are you crazy!
We need to cut him, sending him down would only take time away from a real prospect in OKC.
@dylan: I love the way you play the game!
Dylan: Don’t think we should send Salty down…just play TT more…Taylor’s bat has been very quick lately…
@scooper – I think Ian put a lot of pride in making himself into a leadoff hitter last year. The problem is he’s developed into potentially a GREAT middle of the order hitter and his slumping June (along with the rest of his team) cause him to put a ton of pressure on himself. It looks to me like he’s a lot more relaxed the past 2 weeks, despite still being in a pretty bad slump.
@obagain: obviously, that would be the correct move. I mean, there is no hope for him!
Obagain/Dylan- You guys are funny on Davis. Need to lock you in an iron cage with him and see who comes out.
I think our kneejerking has become confusing. I still think we should take this pent up energy and take it out on Sturm and the UFC knuckleheads.
(I don’t think I”m gaining any traction in the anti-UFC thread bias I’m hoping to create).
@tim: please note the sarcasm. we are not really saying send him down.
We have pena that should be ready by next week, think TT could fill in till then?
@ALL: You’ve definitely got a bit working tonight being the Over Knee-Jerkers. Kind of like the Over Cusser. I, myself, am considering writing a game story this year in the style of 1920′s Reporter Guy.
@ALL: Also Gay/Not Gay is all about what’s cool and what’s silly. Not about sexual orientation.
Josh Lewin to TAG – “You’re a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock and roll.”
As if there was any doubt who is Marie and who is Donnie in that scenario?
@obagain: maybe, but you know how much work he needs on his defense and game-calling. can we really trust him for a week?
@Evan – Noted. Consider D Magazine’s rear covered.
Sorry, I’m starting to get ****y.
OK, millwood is done, he should have his pink slip hanging in his locker, dont even give him a plane ticket home.
The shutdown inning = the Rangers nemesis.
Was Kins ‘Wake-up’ the day off to regain some objectivity (From the dugout) or him not making the ASG?
@obagain – Agreed. We should let Jason Jennings pitch the rest of this game.
@TomB: I think it is not making the ASG (ESPECIALLY not being top 2 in the player vote)
@dylan: can we get Kris Benson off of the DL in time to finish this one?
@Tom B – Do you remember that year that Steve Nash said at the beginning of the year that it was really important to him that he play ever game of the season. He did and then he was visibly fatigued during the post season.
That’s what the management of Kinsler has reminded me of this year. Wash, until this week, seems to have been taking his cues from the player instead of managing his time the way he sees fit.
Wash has done a really great job this season, but that’s one area that I wonder if he might be second guessing himself.
Strange AB for whittleman, first pitch ball then 3 called strikes.
If you follow him you know he walks nearly as much as he gets hits.
For him to look at 3 strikes in a row is a 1 in a million occurance.
Hey, I got kicked off the CORNER…wouldn’t reload for about 10 minutes, I am going to blame it on all 3 of those UFC bloggers.
@Dylan – But before we bring in Jennings, there needs to be at least two Mariners on base. Thats straight from Wash’s gameplan for the night.
I can tell that, internally, I made an important decision about my alcohol intake for tonight because I switched from MacAllen 12 year to my jug of 1792 whiskey.
Buckle up boys and girls.
Marlon was one injection away from a HR there.
Scooper, benson pitched in OKC tonight so he is ready.
4 innings, 9 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned, 2 BB and 2 K’s
I like Wash but…There are times he leaves me scratching my head. He is going to let Andruw Jones go 0 for Seattle and everyone knows it but Wash.
@TD – Figures. They are using our bandwidth. This is OUR corner.
(Dylan channels his inner Avon Barksdale)
I am hoping for a Jennings free night tonight. He’s like a doctor, is capable but it’s never good when you see him.
@TD: it has to be their fault. things like that don’t happen when it is just us.
@jb: good point! I still think we need to think about getting Benson back, though.
@scooper – Nothing says that the Benson/Jennings moves are mutually exclusive. Don’t be so knee-jerky.
Evan, tell bob he will pay if we dont get the record because he stole our bandwidth.
Steve Nash was a gamer but he needed his battery recharged regularly.
@obagain: oh, yeah! Benson is ready to come up and be our Ace! Who needs Roy Halladay?
Evening all. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RANGERS!
OK salty is back, that was a good block and no one was on so he really didnt need to,good hustle.
Blalock decided against the throw to Millwood there. I think he’s gone Chuck Knoblach on us. Send him down!
Hey ryans dad.
@Ryans Dad – What up! We’re in quite a mood in here, so make sure you’re wearing a cup.
you are right Dylan. What was it that Deon Sanders used to say? BOTH!
Hey, Ryans Dad! Watch out, we are being all knee-jerky tonight.
What was up with that?
Yea millwood got the out but he got to a 2 ball count, unacceptable.
I’ll make sure that it’s on square and fitted perfectly.
Hmmmm. what’s the reason for the angst?
And then a walk? Get him outta here!
OK salty is done again, how could he let millwood walk a batter, obviously it is his calling that cost millwood.
We’re running the gamit tonight of people to reference or quote. Anybody got anything from say…A Tibetan Monk? Preferably one with a baseball pedigree.
@Ryans Dad – I’m not sure how it started, but it’s almost certainly Bob Sturm and the UFC people’s fault.
@ryansdad: we were accused of being knee-jerkers, so we decided to be over knee-jerkers. it’s actually kinda fun.
Ryans dad, I was accused of being knee jerky, I dont see it.
@Tom B – The closest thing I’ve got to a Tibetan Monk is John C. Reilly in ‘For the Love of the Game”:
“We don’t suck right now!”
So it’s kind of a throwback night in a way?
Correct, Dylan! Everything is their fault tonight.
@obagain: you are right, salty should know to call for a knuckleball in that situation.
OK millwood got out of the inning so he is back on the team.
@ryansdad: just jump right in and give it your best shot.
Speaking of the word “gamut”: Did you know that it comes from an ancient Druid alphabet who’s first letter was “gamma” and last letter was “ut”? Hence if someone “runs the gamut” they are actually going from “gamma” to “ut.”
I’m gonna lay back and let the game come to me if you don’t mind.
@ryans dad – But if you screw up, we’ll send you down.
Yeah, we need to sign Millwood to a 10-year extension.
Some weird spin coming off some of the fly balls tonight.
@dylan: that makes enough sense that it may actually be true.
Salty is our MVP!
@Evan – Question: When the roster expands in a couple of months, who do you think are the frontrunners right now to join the big club?
@Dylan. Love it. And the beauty is it does not proclude us doing so at some future inning.
How did salty get left off the allstar team?
@Evan-
Good night. To silly for my time.
Ok, I’m going to declare Salty no longer being a switch hitter. He needs to bat only from the right side from now on.
salty mvp
And what about this Elvis kid? He looks like a statue out in the field – no range at all!
Come on fred, we need you.
@scooper: ha, you beat me
But he knows how to draw a walk.
@Fred – Don’t leave! We’re all just having a good time.
What do you want to talk about?
@Fred: please stay! we don’t mean to run you off!
That was as good as a bunt.
Fred is Dead…Long live Fred…
At least KINS was running it out….seen him not a few times, but it never gets mentioned on the broadcast..Hmmm.
I’ll even stop knee-jerking if you want me too!
Me too! Just say the word and I’m done knee-jerking for the evening.
Vaya con Dios Fred…..
damn!
Well that didnt turn out well but we did make him throw a bunch of pitches.
Washburn’s got some pretty salty stuff working tonight. Millwood too. Shaping up to be a nice pitcher’s duel.
Yeah, but we sure could have used those 2 runs.
I would have bet the rent money on MY. You Bum!!!
I like a good pitcher’s duel as long as we win.
Millie has two innings to get it done or he will be out of gas.
TAG is right. MLB Gameday says 91.8 for Millwood’s average FB. That is a little higher than normal.
@scooper – I wonder if the slow Arlington gun makes that number slightly low?
i wouldn’t mind a nice, quick 2-1 pitchers duel. bought dexter season two today and have been itching to watch it
Scooper, it looks like he wants to show the last game was a fluke.
@jb – Season 2 rocks.
cbssports says 94, 94 on the past two fastballs
Millwood at 85 pitches now, 7 is almost out of the question.
@ALL: I’m back. Been musing on the best breakfast I’ve ever had.
http://bit.ly/LPijT
@Evan, You got Honey on the Rock?
@Evan – The best? That’s a bold statement right there. ‘specially coming from you!
@Evan- kind of off the wall but has there been any thought given to playing Salty at 1st base a couple of games to spell Hank?
We’re suffering here trying to knee jerk a run and you’re thinking FOOD?
Wow… I don’t know about that… Looked to me like they had him by a solid margin.
missed the tag…barely.
Nope… Elvis missed the tag.
That was a bad call.
Rookies, ughh
Watch the jersey, he got him.
Wow… what a weird looking play.
Wow, poorly timed Moonwalk reference by JOSH.
Good thing kins was back on that one.
@Little O: Remember that in 2007 the Rangers played Salty at first some and were not impressed. He’s a fine defensive catcher, much better than he was in 2007 or last year. And everybody believes he’s eventually going to hit for significant power. If he combines those two, he’s going to be a very good catcher. Just a question of whether does ever get the offensive part. But there is nothing wrong with his defensive. If the Rangers are going to spell Blalock at first, it would be with Andruw Jones or David Murphy, who is currently learning the position.
I thought he missed the tag.
@jb: that was his average, not those particular fastballs.
We have Grilli and O’Day tonight and..dare I say…CJ?
WANT A JOSH HAMILTON HOMERUN SOON IF NOT NOW!
@Evan – Murphy? Really? This is the first I’ve heard of that.
Jones is looking pretty rough up there tonight.
Yeah, we should always play the veterans. You can’t trust the young guys to do anything. I mean, look at that Elvis kid. He’s been horrible all year! He needs to go back to the minors! (we are still knee-jerking, right?)
Salty made beaucoup errors at 1st back then. He is a liabilioty there.
FYI – Going in for Whiskey #3. Pray for me.
Evan, that is the strange part of baseball, salty was known more for his bat potential and he would get a pass on defense because of it.
Now his defense is what is allowing him to buy more time for his bat to arrive.
@Evan- Thanks, just kind of wondered about that. I remember him playing there back then and also in Atlanta but I didn’t remeber how he did there.
@evan: how long has it been since Andruw last had a hit?
10:44: Regarding the tag play at second on Ronny Cedeno, think you can make an argument either way. If he did brush the jersey, it was faint, very faint and it’s hard for anybody to see that in real time. The only thing that is surprising is that when the throw beats the runner by that much, I think you are outthinking yourself to try and see if the tag wasn’t made. Because we’ve all watched in slow motion several times and still can’t be sure.
@Dylan: The whiskey is talking. Believe we reported it in notes or live blog earlier this week from Anaheim. But then again, maybe it’s the breakfast that is talking to me.
@littleo: he played there some in Atlanta because they wanted to get his bat in the lineup, McCann was catching, and Scott Thorman was their first baseman.
@scooper: He’s in an 0-for-13. But my bet is he plays again tomorrow. Rangers are facing another lefty. With a three man bench and one being a backup catcher, another being a lefty and the third being a 42-year-old middle infielder, the choices are limited.
Evan, you did have a note on it and it was in the live blog also.
In reference to the Rookie of the Year discussion that josh and tag just had… in jayson stark’s first half review column, he didn’t even mention elvis’ name as a contendor for AL ROY – and he listed 10 candidates. He did mention Washington in the discussion for manager of the year though.
@scooper- thanks, can’t say I know much about the Braves
Andruw likes L.A….as long as he doesn’t have to live there. 3 homers and 0 for Seattle
@evan: I’m sure you are right and he will play tomorrow. I just couldn’t remember if he had had a hit since that 3-homer game. I see that he hasn’t.
@Evan – My whiskey drinking made a live blog earlier this week? I think that might be a sign that I have a problem.
JB, some writers dont follow baseball, they just watch east coast games.
@jb – I read something earlier this week (can’t remember who it was. A national writer) that said that Elvis isn’t among the top 10 of rookies.
That seems laughable to me.
I think if you did not see Elvis’ range and only looked at his 11 or so errors you might surmise the same thing but he has been big for us.
@Tom B – Especially when you consider that the bulk of those 11 errors came in the first few weeks of the season.
This has gotta be Millwood’s last inning. Really nice bounceback outing from last time, though.
evening everyone!!!
Griffey was really stretching Millie.
If the Rangers and Angels battle it out all the way to the end, at least a few national writers will watch the Ranger games cheering for them to lose so the fake LA team can make the playoffs. While doing so, perhaps they’ll notice Elvis and vote for him for ROY
I have manlove for Elvis.
Gay or not gay?
Sup Ehren!
@Evan: that was a great postcard.
@Dan – Sports exemption.
I realize that we are biased, but Elvis ought to at least be in the conversation. Do you know the web-gems on baseball tonight? They periodically show a list of the players with the most web-gems and Elvis isn’t even on the list! The last one I saw had Brandon Inge on top with 7. Sometimes I just don’t know what they are watching.
been away for a bit but back tracking to my earlier post… please see the Redhawks box score as proof to why you shouldn’t knee jerk..
@scooper I might not always be the voice of reason but at least I come with different views/info/opinion than a lot of you leaders on this here blog that usually only regurgitate what the read on DMN, Lone Star, BBTiA, MJH or Evan Grant
That is all…
Lamar, the writer in question gave the AL ROY to Okijima of the red sox, that tells you all you need to know about his baseball knowledge.
FYI – This is nowhere NEAR our strongest comment thread, numbers wise, and we are STILL beating the UFC thread by a 5-1 margin.
Way to hustle BYRD MAN….
@Dylan: Verducci at SI.com listed top 3 ROY possibilities and Elvis WAS NOT listed.
Franklin Gutierez let Millie off of the hook. If he goes 110 pitches Millie probably doesn’t come back out. Now, he might get another inning under his belt. I love it.
@scooper – In fairness to the national press, the Rangers haven’t given them much of a reason to watch us for a decade. Even Tampa Bay didn’t really get mentioned much until late August.
Byrd FLEW down the line. And there’s your avianic reference.
@jcouch: You are ****y, I will give you that. You should make your own blog, I bet it will be the greatest thing EVER.
@jcouch – All in good fun, homie.
I do have to say it seems like it’s been a while since we’ve seen a mind-blowing play from Elvis. Seemed like he had 3 or 4 in a couple of weeks span early in the season, but not anything spectacular since then.
I think a big part of that though is that he gets to everything so smoothly though–it’s not like he’s just missed making an amazing play or anything.
WASH YOU NEED TO GET THROWN OUT ARGUING THAT CALL!!!!
@Ehren: Saw that, all pitchers on his list I believe.
Wow! What’s the rule on that?
That is a really tough break. I’ll defer to the umpire on the rule, but man… that’s the kind of error that loses you a game.
@Ehren – I hear ya (and agree with ya). That’s just not Wash’s style. It’s like Wade Phillips getting thrown out. Not gonna happen.
We’re in a 1-1 game, but I don’t like the feel of how this one is going.
Seems that the Rangers have lost out on 2 to 3 types of those rulings each game this series
@TD: how about the MVP listing! Top 10 and no Young. #10 was Shoo-Indians. How could Young not crack that list.
@TD: I’m still laughing that jcouch called me a “leader” on this blog! I thought we were all just here throwing out comments and having a good time!
@Dan – That being said, Elvis has shown an amazing ranger at Short all season (whether the play is web-gemmy or not) and has been a nice addition to the lineup for a rookie (patience and contact). I just don’t see how he isn’t even in the conversation.
*amazing range… not ranger.
I have no idea about that play. How about you big baseball brains?
that inning sucked!
Rule #68 of professional baseball broadcasting: Never leave on a roadrip without your rulebook!
Whatever @scooper – We all know that you are just making a power play to control the blog. Evan needs to watch his back.
@scooper: DMN invading the blog?
These seattle road games, always are so close! Or at least it seems that way…
P.S. I did not read that on DMN, lone star ball, or even from the great Evan Grant, I actually had my own thought for the FIRST time in my entire LIFE!
I vote with TAG: if he had already touched 2nd, then they had to tag him. Problem is, I couldn’t see if he actually touched the base before he tried to go back to first.
We also see elvis every game so some plays that looked amazing earlier are now viewed as routine.
@TD: Good for you! I’m still waiting for my first original thought.
@EHREN: Yeah, to put someone in the top 10 list from one of the biggest disappointments, in the Cleveland Indians, over Young is just flat STUPID. He is a good writer, but that’s just dumb.
I can’t believe Millwood is out to start this inning with NO ONE ready to go in the pen. I am increasingly pessimistic about this game.
@Dylan…oh no doubt…He’s Top 3/5 for sure.
That’s why I am the proud owner of an Elvis Andrus jersey, which I’ll be modeling out at the Ballpark for the Red Sox game in a couple of weeks.
@obagain – Also, Elvis is a real improvement from side to side over MY at the 6-hole. Might inflate our opinion of him.
@TD and scoop: what’s a thought?
I don’t wanna say I told you so… but, I told you so.
@Scooper: Best of luck with that….
OH CRAP….dangit. Just like that…3-1
@obagain: good point. also better defensive positioning means fewer chances at great plays.
ugh
On the play with Byrd at second, since he tagged second before he started back to first, once the throw was made to second, now the second baseman can’t just catch it and force him out, he has to tag him, at least that’s what Byrd and later on Wash were arguing. The Seattle announcers never caught it, even after their camera crew kept running the play over and over, they were too busy rattling about the pitcher and how wonderful he is. My question, wasn’t Byrd right? or am I missing a rule interpretation here?
@dylan: looks like your instincts are right
the second part of the byrd play is cruz had not touched first so the base is still open and no force was in play so a tag needed to be applied.
Well, now we know Byrd did touch 2nd. That should have taken the force out off.
Whoa! That rule says it all, doesn’t it?
There’s our “ace”…lol.
7.08(e)
“(e) He fails to reach the next base before a fielder tags him or the base, after he has been forced to advance by reason of the batter becoming a runner. However, if a following runner is put out on a force play, the force is removed and the runner must be tagged to be put out. The force is removed as soon as the runner touches the base to which he is forced to advance, and if he overslides or overruns the base, the runner must be tagged to be put out. However, if the forced runner, after touching the next base, retreats for any reason towards the base he had last occupied, the force play is reinstated, and he can again be put out if the defense tags the base to which he is forced;”
They just said that the force is still on if the runner retreats to a previous base.
Like I said, the umps are generally right on that… But hell.
Can’t fault Millwood too much…another game for Kevin, another 1 run output from the offense…UGH.
Let’s hope we can get something going
@Phil – I don’t put this on Millwood. He pitched great tonight. This is on Wash (and perhaps Wash falling victim to the Nolan Ryan mandate we’ve all heard so much about). Millwood should have NEVER come into this inning with 100+ pitches. That’s just lunacy.
thanks Dan.
@ehren: you are just TOO GOOD!
And, frankly. This kind of move pisses me off. There’s just absolutely no reason for a pitcher to start an inning in a tie game with 100+ pitches under his belt. None at all. That is a completely baseball illiterate decision.
I hear ya (to me Wash has no feel for when a pitcher has lost it), but come on a HR to a guy who has only hit two in his career?
He served up BP.
@dan: thanks for the info!
Looks like @dan and @evan got the info to us at the same time.
i can’t stand Ichiro!
@Dan: Good gracious you are quick. You beat everybody in the press box to it.
The bright spot is the extra run there will make our comeback win even sweeter.
Game over.
No way these free swinging Rangers can come back (Phil says hoping that complaining will be a reverse jinx).
It’s times like these that I would make Wash walk home.
This loss (assuming it will be a loss) will be caused by a weird baserunning error. I imagine that’s where the focus will be in the writing tomorrow.
It shouldn’t be. I said earlier upthread that I think Wash has been great this season, but he absolutely made the wrong move in this game leaving Millwood in. I just don’t understand what argument you could POSSIBLY make that makes it ok for you to put someone with that kind of mileage on his arm in the game to come in during a tie game. I don’t understand it at all.
I’ll tell you what, that is one rule I will never forget!
@ Evan: I think that if your going to send someone back out to start the 7th, he shouldn’t be close to 100 pitches, even if the bottom of the order is coming up. These guys are conditioned to go about 100 and even though millwood has been a horse this year, Wash still needs to put him in a position to be sucessful. Don’t we have some pretty good arms down there (O’day, Holland, Grilli, Wilson, Frankie) Some times you gotta dump the “pitch 7 innings mantra” and win the game with a quality start and some dominance from the pen.
nice throws by salty tonight
He gets thrown out by 5 feet and argues?
I hereby dub @dan as the offical Inside Corner Rule Book specialist.
Whoa, whats with the negative attitude Phil. Wait till the end of the 9th for that talk.
6 to 1 over the UFC spares. Keep up the good work, gang.
That is all.
What I dont get is why wash brought eddie in?
He has not exactly been lights out and we are still in a close game.
@scooper: i won’t forget that rule either until the next game starts.
@dylan: I must admit that I missed it – did Millwood have 100 pitches already when he came out for the 7th? If so, I agree with you. Still, it’s a judgment call.
We just need a second base coach for byrd. Is that allowed? Can someone check the rulebook?
@obagain – BEcause Jennings pitched last night.
@scooper – He had 105.
@Dylan It’s only lunacy to think your No. 1 pitcher can’t handle three guys hitting a collective .190. This is on Millwood, good as he was you CANNOT get beat by those weak tickets. If you can’t beat those guys in the 7th, you got no chance in the postseason. It’s also on that effed up top of the inning. The only lunacy tonight has been Marlon on the basepaths — two major gaffes.
I am going to knee jerk and say that Eddie is sparing me to death out there….
@ehren: phil is trying a reverse jinx
@The Golden One – He had 105 pitches. 105.
Seriously. 105.
Dylan, jennings would be an even worse choice with a runner on.
What about our regular 7th inning guy O’day?
With 100+ pitches, bringing Millwood in with a 3-1 lead? I can see the argument for that. Bringing him out with that many pitches in a 1-1 pitchers duel. LOO-NA-CIE
scooper: i had an unfortunate knee jerk reaction. sorry phil!!!!
@obagain – I was being kneejerk guy
@Dylan: I think one Nolan Ryan might have a different take on your 100 pitch theory.
105 thru 6 is a lot of pitches. And it is a close game so most of those were pretty stressful. Personally, I don’t think I would have brought him out for the 7th, but that is also hindsight.
@jb – That’s my point. For the most part I LOVE the point of view that Nolan has brought to the organization about pitch counts. Over-reliance on pitch counts is counter-intuitive to good pitching.
But on the flip side, pitch counts have emerged for a freaking reason! There’s only one other manager that I can imagine making the same call with Millwood that Wash made in this game, and he manages Kansas City.
@Ehren: No worries!
@all–
I take no credit–TAG and Josh got an e-mailer that gave them the rule and I just regurgitated it here when they stated the rule#.
*Activating Rally Cap*
@Joshua: There are two ways to look at this argument. Millwood has already had 12 outings this year with more than 110 pitches. On one hand, you can say, he’s able to do it and that the weather isn’t an issue and that he’s not going to pitch for a week.
On the other side, you might say he’s worked so hard this season and he’s heading into the break, everybody is fresh, don’t push him.
You can bet the Rangers asked him and you can bet Millwood said he had enough for another inning. And all the times this year, they’ve asked him that, he’s been honest and able to do it. You’ve got to trust your pitchers. Millwood had retired Johnson, a .199 hitter coming into the game twice. I want Kevin Millwood facing that guy in a tie game at any point in time. Didn’t work out tonight.
I didnt have a problem with him pitching the 7th but he should have been on a short leash, 1 baserunner and he should have come out.
@Dan – That’s big of you. I’d have taken the credit
@dan: you regurgitate really fast!
@Dan: Then you should get credit for your fast typing (or cut&pasting)!
Does anyone else think that there is a little something going on behind the scenes between CRUZ and WASH….it just doesn’t feel right.
I am not against WASH, but I just don’t see him here, extension or not, if we don’t win the division….
I think we should send Wash to Hickory and let him find his stroke. Move every other Manager up one team. Works for me.
Interesting night, no?
@jb: just as long as you don’t break out the Rally Monkey!
Elvis’ errors:
0 (!) so far in July
5 in June
1 (!) in May
6 in (a short) April
Rangers’ record in those games: 6-5 (he had two one game in a loss)
@Evan – At what point is the manager responsible to make the decision for his players? To me, this is analogous to the Ian Kinsler situation to. Kins is so deadset on playing every game that he’s never gonna say, “I need a day off.”
Same with Millwood. He’s not gonna say, “Bring in O’Day.” But a manager has to be smarter.
I think now the Rangers need to be looking to get to the ASB w/o any injuries. Don’t worry about the division standings, just start over fresh next week.
We should let Chris Davis manage the team.
@scooper: Dan must be a super model to regurgitate that fast!
@Dan – Great stats!
@RyansDad: Yup. It’s had a little bit of everything.
@dylan So. That number isn’t a big deal to a guy like Millwood.
Wash knows he’s going to need all hands on deck tomorrow with Nippert going.
I just want to go on record that I think we should send this thread down to the minors for a while.
@ehren: you are too good for me! I nominate you as leader of this blog!
@The Golden One – It was a 1-1 game. It just seems like such a no-brainer of a call to me.
Here’s an idea… Tom Hicks could auction off the manager’s duties for the rest of the year. He does need the money.
@TD–
remember, Wash didn’t get an extension–he just got his option picked up. His contract only goes to the end of 2010 at this point.
How about FRED as the new manager, he is no-nonsense.
And have patience with this thread Dylan, I think we can perform at a consistent major league level..we have to take it one post at a time and give each post 110 percent!
TGO, the plan is nippert for 3, holland for 3 and then see what the score is to decide how it finishes out.
@jb – Genius! $1000 bucks an inning! $9000 per game! That’d be too steep for my pocketbook generally, but there are three paychecks in July!
@Dylan: But, Millwood has been right so often this year. At some point, you trust your guys, even if it ends up costing you a game here or there.
If Millwood said he couldn’t go and Washington asked him for another inning, that’s one thing. But I doubt that’s the case. And in this situation, I think you have to give Millwood some degree of respect for what he’s done. In that regard, if that’s what happened, I think Washington handled it the proper way.
@dylan: I agree. obviously we are off our game. We need to relax, regroup and come back when we are through regurgitating and have some original thoughts.
@TD – I’m just happy to be here and hope I can help the organization.
@Evan – I dunno, man. This just seems really cut and dried to me.
Again, I totally agree with you if he’s got, say, a 3-1 lead. But it was a 1-1 game. That decision lost the game.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?????????? YES!!
@all: and good lord willing, things will work out.
haha.. the comments have evolved from kneejerk to sports cliche theme… hmm, is this progress?
Scooper, come on this is a team sport.
If we all stick together and play as a team we will work out of our slump and get back to our winning ways.
It doesn’t help that NY decided to fly to Anahiem and lay an egg this week.
Let’s all pull together and have a strong 9th inning! We won’t break the record, but we can blow by 400!
@jb: it is what it is.
JB, it is progress, we have to keep moving forward, never look back.
@Evan: I agree. Mill has the history to go against bottom feeders. SHOOT!!! once again i have no thought.
@Dylan: If he replaces millwood and the same thing happens then that’s the decision that lost the game and everyone would be asking why he took out millwood.
How about that AJ move. I believe he has a whopping 4 hits on this 7 game road swing right now. That’s almost a hit every other game. Excellent.
Finally! A night shot of the train!
@scooper – 400 would be great, but all I really care about is beating the UFC gang.
@evan: can you actually hear that train inside the press box?
We all put our pants on one leg at a time here at the corner….
Think Jones has been too busy reading clippings from his three-HR game?
It is decisions like that which lose collective confidence. You know, like Water Cooler mutiny. It starts w/ let’s dunk Wash and then moves to bigger things like let’s lose three in a row to protest. I’m just saying…
@Ehren – Totally. But with a fresh arm then you just say that it wasn’t your night. No one would have said, “If only they’d left Kevin Millwood in the game!” You know why? BECAUSE HE HAD PITCHED 105 PITCHES!
@dylan: we had them beat in the second inning!
@scooper: we needed a train fix!
@TD – Win 20 games in the comment threads and then you can have fungus on your shower shoes and people will call you colorful.
@Dylan: i’m a slob.
@Dylan: Wash didnt lose the game (if they lose), Millwood did by giving up the HR. The bottom line is players have to perform. Millwood gets paid to be an ace, wants to be the ace then he needs to pitch like one and not give up that homer. If he told Wash he wanted to pitch that inning than Wash goes with it beacuse that is the Rangers guy. Sometimes coaches get to much grief, it is the players that have to make the plays to win a game.
Holy caw, how bad would it be if he gets thrown out at second again.
Yes, Phil, I do.
Please, Marlon! No more baserunning gaffes!
i got it that it was 105.
Can Byrd end this on a base running blunder?
You have to turn in to that ball. They need baserunners
@Fox – But he had thrown 105 pitches!!!! I’m not trying to be cute when I say that… I’m just saying there’s only so much a human being can do and in a 1-1 game it is prudent for a manager to protect a game.
It’s even more egregious when you consider that Washburn had his A-game.
going for the HR.
obagain: please no more harry carry. unless you got the whiskey!!!
Does anyone know why Eddie after Millwood? Is that sound management?
Nope! Cruz will end it with a K.
@Dylan This game wasn’t lost by Millwood starting the 7th. You think Guaradado was going to do better? That’s lunacy. Impatience at the plate and poor baserunning, as Marlon showed a third time in the 9th, is behind this loss.
They will go into the break in second, losing 3 of 4 to a far inferior opponent because they didn’t grind M’s pitchers like they did Angel pitchers. That and an unfortunate matchup (Nippert v. Bedard).
We should’ve won the first 3 so tomorrow’s bad break wouldn’t matter.
And at 15 till midnight with the 391st comment in the blog… “egregious” makes an appearance! good job dylan
I would like to thank evan for giving me the oppertunity to be on the fie..er.. blog tonight.
The naysayers said I wasnt ready but evan saw something the others didnt.
I think we all agree we play hard for evan, even in a loss.
@The Golden One – In a 1-1 game they wouldn’t have brought in Eddie, they’d have brought in O’Day.
I totally agree with you about baserunning.
Pray for a miracle tomorrow, gang. We’ll need it.
@jb – I come to play, yo!
oh god it’s attack of rick renner hair!!!
I am impressed with Dylan’s vocabulary.
@dylan: did you win spelling bees in school?
Good thread tonight, gang. I hope Fred comes back. I miss him.
No way the Yankees get swept by the Angels right? Well…here is to a better performance tomorrow.
And one last knee jerk: We should trade Ian Kinsler and Kevin Millwood for Roy Halladay.
@scooper… I was going to enter the spelling be, but I’d already spelled 105 words before the bee started and my teacher pulled me for a fresh speller.
@obagain: we should all be grateful that Evan gives us this wonderful forum to express our un-original thoughts. We are very fortunate.
@TD: don’t tear an ACL!!!
@dylan: I think you need some more whiskey! I know that I do!
@scooper: still fuzzy on this whole thought thing.
I am not sure how the d magazine works but can you imagine if the editor asks evan to give him a run down on the blog tonight?
What would he say?
Good night, All! It was fun tonight!
Actually the derivative of the word ‘egregious’ came from an ancient Gallic word for Eagle and how it can dump on you while on high. It was stolen by Viking Coast Raiders to Normandy and brought to these shores to gain a new life. I know because I was there.
@obagain: he would say, “413 comments is all that you need to know!”
obagaib: that he didn’t have a thought.
Tom, that would make you 2 years older than me.
Night all!!!! check ya tomorrow!
@TomB: you are wonderful!
@Tom B – Genius.
*Tomorrow is a new day*
Peace out, gang.
I just feel like I let him down, the game was so fast that with just a little more time we could have made 500.
@oba: still over 400 on a saturday.
Hopefully, Evan will understand and give us another chance tomorrow.
@dylan: we won, 424-59
@scooper – Damn straight.
Dont be too hard on bob, I remember whe 150 was a huge night for us.
@obagain – Hush!
Eva sleeps with Honey Dippers. He don’t know about no stinking post counts.
Time out, Ump. What’s the count again? But you can’t throw me out for arguing the count. I got money bet on that count.
Dexter is the best series ever I can’t wait till is realesed season 5
