5:41: We’ve replaced musings with pithy commentary, but there is no replacing the Home Run Pool. It’s open for bidness. Also, the Rangers notebook is available for you to peruse at your convenience.

7:08: OK, game time. Gotta grab a bite after doing TV. Be back momentarily.

7:31: Did I win the home run pool? Oh, no I didn’t. Oh, yes I did.

7:37: Some of y’all have sent along very nice notes about our little pep rally at Pappasito’s in Arlington last night and I reall appreciate those. I really applaud all of you who showed up in the sweltering heat. I’ll provide a full recap probably at the start of next week, but in the meantime, you can check out the photo at left or see the full album here.

7:44: Here is something to remember : When Ian Kinsler scores a run, the Rangers are 32-10 this season. He has already scored once. When he scores more than once, the team is 12-2.

7:50: Josh Hamilton’s two-run homer in the first was his first multi-run homer since May 15. Hamilton has seven homers this year and five of them have come with a man on base, but he does not have a three-run homer or a grand slam.

8:00: From Jack Daddy, whyo blogs even when he can’t blog comes this:

At game, so can’t blog – love the opposite field approach in the first two innings. Byrd and Elvis with two rips. Cruz was opp field. Blalock (if I remember). Ian up the middle.

He sent it via email. I’ve told him he needs to get an iPhone if he doesn’t already own one and that everything else is an excuse.

8:15: One addition to the notes, but you knew this was coming if you attended the Pappasito’s even last night or read Jeff Miller’s update this morning: The Rangers have officially released Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez.

8:21: Some good story-telling on Greg Maddux, you know the guy also known as the brother of Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, can be found here. Gives you some insight into how much these guys think about the philosophy of pitching.

8:33: Off to do the bottom of the fifth on TV. Ranger Rally?

8:56: Not much of a rally, but it did produce a run. TV replays showed the second strike to Blalock was outside by a couple of inches.

8:57: Michael Young’s infield single in the fifth, made possible by Elvis Andrus’ great jump running from first to second, was the 1,595th of his career. Young is now tied with Juan Gonzalez for third in Rangers history in hits.

9:13: Here is the thing that has been most impressive about Vicente Padilla over the last six weeks: He’s shown me more willingness to battle through tough situations than at any previous point in his career with the Rangers. He gave up five runs in the first three innings and here it is the bottom of the seventh, he’s not been lifted and the Rangers still have a chance to win. I remember in Oakland’s heyday, the Rangers use to get A’s pitchers to the edge, but couldn’t knock them out and then Oakland would rally to win late. This start has that kind of look.

9:18: Elvis Andrus is 0-for-3 tonight and is now hitting exactly 200 (19-for-95) since June 1. His season average has fallen to exactly .250.

9:28: Four double plays for the Rangers tonight.

9:34: Andruw Jones’ one-out single in the eighth snapped an 0-for-17 skid that stretched back to the last of his three home runs against the Angels.

9:40: Off to TV set. Let’s keep it here for post-game until I get back from television. Jeff Miller will be along after the game with a game story, too.

  • Steve The Dog

great job on the pre-game Evan

  • Steve The Dog

That was still a heck of a play

  • Steve The Dog

is sure is lonely around here, I think i just heard my own echo

  • TD

    Nice inning by Vinny.

  • Doug Fu

I won’t win the Homer Pool now, but I’ll take a leadoff single by Kinsler.

  • TD

wow….a leadoff SINGLE by KINS. That’s great to see.

  • Fred

Nice to see Kins take it up the middle

  • Little O

Walter Cronkite dead at the age of 92

  • Andrew in Boston

@Evan or anyone else. Any write up on the shin dig last night. I was in Dallas through the 14th. I am disappointed I couldn’t make it.

  • TD

    WOO HOO!

  • Steve The Dog

    good call, good call

  • Doug Fu

    Oh hell yeah!

    Love seeing Hammy get going!!!

  • scooper

love to see that back in the line-up!

  • Fred

Nice adjustment by Ham when lefty was pounding him inside

  • Steve The Dog

Jones you fartsniffer, run…he gave up on that

  • NTC-Brendan

Lead-off hit by Kins – Hopefully the days off did him some good.

HR by Hambino – Never a bad thing to watch.

  • NTC-Brendan

Blalock with a hit vs. a lefty – Great start tonight.

  • Fred

And…Hank going to opposite field. Good signs.

  • scooper

Congrats on the Homer Pool win, Evan!

  • Fred

Jones steamed it. Borbon probably couldn’t have beaten it out, and Jones weighs 50 lbs more and has terrible knees. He dogs some, and it drives me crazy, but can’t fault him on that one.

  • Ryan s

Evan, nice job last night. Love to see Jeff R throwing balls to the kids.

  • TD

That’s not fair EVAN! Man, you are the Master of rangers baseball…..

When was Josh’s last homerun oh noble one?

  • Evan Grant

@TD: Last homer by Hamilton was May 24.

  • Doug Fu

Well dang. Should have been out of the inning, and now it’s tied.

  • Steve The Dog

    @ Evan

What other options are out there for the Rangers, if they don’t land Halladay

  • scooper

@steve: stay the course, zach duke …. How’s Delilah?

  • scooper

@all: I’m interested in seeing if Feliz pitches tonight. Last night, Jon Daniels said that he would pitch back-to-back nights by the weekend (he pitched last night), then he would be an option to be called up possibly as early as next week (depending on the Rangers’ needs).

  • Marcus

Evening everyone. Little late getting to the game and the first pitch I see was what looked to be strike three from Padilla to end the second. But he got squeezed and now the score is tied. It he doesn’t get that pitch it might be a long night.

  • obagain

Scooper, benson is starting so plenty of pitchers should see action tonight.

  • Marcus

    Nice play bu Little E

  • Steve The Dog

    @Scooper
Thanks for asking, she’s fine wherever she’s at, she heard the intro music to Ranger’s insider and said, “Oh hell no”

  • scooper

    @obagain: thanks!

  • scooper

@steve: hopefully she is out having a good time and will be in a great mood when she gets back!

  • Marcus

    Next batter gets hit?

  • TD

Well…crap. I hate the “PADILLA SQUEEZE”.

  • scooper

@evan: from the man who was talked into getting a Blackberry instead of an iphone? Or, have you since bought an iphone?

  • Evan Grant

@Steve: All guys on the market would be options for the Rangers, but I don’t know how motivated they are to make a deal for a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher. Halladay changes the complexion of a pennant race. I’m not sure Zach Duke or Gil Meche or Kyle Davies or Javier Vazquez or any of the other rumored-to-possibly-be-available starters do that.

  • Fred

Padilla’s getting squeezed. Unfortunately, he loses focus with adversity.

  • obagain

Neil ramirez started really slow but had a vary good night in hickory.
    6 innings, 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 BB and 4 K’s.
With perez and ross making the hot list and kiker in the honorable mention it looks like the pitching is getting stronger.

  • scooper

IMO, the Rangers shouldn’t trade for a pitcher unless it is a true “ace” (Halladay qualifies; the others in that list don’t).

  • Evan Grant

@scooper: Can’t change to an Iphone since I’m on Trot, I mean, Sprint. But as soon as I can, I’m there.

  • Little O

What the heck was that throw from the ump!

  • obagain

Looks like the ump has a salty arm.

  • Jack Daddy

Ok- figured out the site on blackberry.

Padilla is killing. Though another good ranger ab, as ian goes to cf. That’s 4 or 5 hard hit outs by my count, with the only one pulled by jones.

  • wes

looks like blue is at least calling it both ways

  • Jack Daddy

Another ball up the middle. Hate the score, but love the approach at the plate. Love it.

  • Fred

Hammy looks a lot better. Have to agree with Wash. Adjusted 1st time, opened up his hips. Next time smoked (Smoaked, only from the left side??) 1 up the middle

  • obagain

When do we move jones back to the bench?

  • Little O

@Jack Daddy- try Opera Mini on your BB, best browser I’ve found for it.

  • obagain

Whittleman just went deep again in frisco.
He also has his normal walk.
If he could just find a way to get the average up to 280 he would be worth watching.

  • obagain

I use to use bolt on my blackberry and now I use it for my iphone.

  • Brent

There is no reason for anyone to own anything other than an iPhone. And the DMagazine iPhone interface is brilliant. I actually like it better than the web browser version because there is a link directly to the next or previous story.

  • TD

I have a Samsung Eternity….sort of my ghetto iphone. I really like it tho, in my opinion it is the best “non-smart” phone. All touch screen, big screen, great internet features.

    POW POW!

Still wish I had an iPhone…..who am I kidding.

  • Brent

And when I say “anything other than an iPhone,” I mean ANYTHING. It’s more important than a house, car, television…ANYTHING.

  • Marcus

@Evan: I’m impressed with the poise that Padilla has shown tonight. I can’t remember him hitting anyone since the waiver incident. Can you confirm that?

  • Steve The Dog

What I would give up for Halladay:

I don’t think Smoak is untouchable, if he is a must have for any deal, he is in.

With as well as he has pitched in parts of the season, I would definitely give up CJ

I kind of like Kiker and Feliz, but any of the other young pitchers, I would be willing to part with.

This is about winning a Championship, I would much rather have that, than to wait and see IF, and or WHEN these prospects develop.

  • Marcus

@Little O: I am a self proclaimed Blackberry idiot. I would like to try out Opera Mini, as I don’t really like the browser on the phone. Where can one go to download it?

  • Evan Grant

@Marcus: You are correct and if he goes through the game today without hitting anybody, it will be Padilla’s longest stretch without a hit batter in his career. He is working on his seventh consecutive start without plunking anyone.

  • Little O

iPhone- De rigueur for true douchedom ;)

  • Marcus

Wow, that’s the first time I remember that effus curve hit hard for a basehit.

  • TD

This game is boring. Minnesota is boring.

  • Brent

Halladay: I don’t give up Holland, Perez, Feliz, or Andrus (or obviously Hamilton and Kinsler). Anybody else is up for discussion.

  • wes

i was about to ask the same thing TAG just said…anyone rember that slow curve padilla throws ever being hit?

  • wes

@Marcus: sorry i typed before i saw your post

  • Little O

@Marcus- use the BB browser and go to m.opera.com it will detect your device and give the download

  • Last of the Romohicans

So, I’m enjoying some Dr. Pepper complements of Mr. Grant.

    … alcoholic Dr. Pepper.

Wife is watching some movie about Ann Bolin, with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johannsen.

Half hour in, I decided to be with you and MLB.tv…Yahtzee.

  • Little O

    Here’s our hero!!!

  • Steve The Dog

    Evan in the booth

  • TD

Sweet…this will entertain me. Evan on TV.

  • obagain

wes I seem to remember it getting hit a couple of times but never hard.

  • Jack Daddy

Need some runs here or my kid is gonna drag me to the whiffle ball park. I’ll be broke!

  • Fred

@obagain- altho I obviously don’t see Jones in the future, and it drives me crazy (despite 3 HR) when he’s in there against RHP. I think there is a place for hm against LHP. He coulda had a double in the 1st.

  • Last of the Romohicans

Evan talking country music. I think Ann Bolin movies are more in my wheel house, than country is in his.

  • Last of the Romohicans

    @Little O… thank you :)

  • obagain

    that is speed

  • Steve The Dog

    YARD

  • TD

    HERE WE GO….come on JOSH!!

  • TD

    Evan is bragging.

  • obagain

    evan tooting his own horn.

  • Marcus

Hope Evan can type when he gets done with TV as much as he is patting his own back!

  • obagain

we really needed hamilton to his like this the rest of the year.

  • adiosmofo

@EG: is that the first run scored during a TV appearence this year?

  • Little O

Don’t really want to know about Josh’s “manhood” :)

    @LOTR- happy to oblige!

  • adiosmofo

how much beter is Emily Jones than Jim Knox?

  • Marcus

@adiosmofo: She’s nicer to look at, that’s for sure!

  • DC

benson just gave up his 7th run in 6 innnings.

  • Last of the Romohicans

@adios: i never listen to anything either has to say.

    So .. better x infinity

  • scooper

I’m still looking for a Feliz appearance.

  • Fred

    Bye, bye Bentson

  • TD

Emily Jones got married to a guy I grew up with, she is a very nice person too.

  • obagain

scooper, he has not been coming in until the 8-9th inning.

  • Evan Grant

@Last: I like some country music. Buffett actually plays some country music. I like a few songs here and there. I’ve got a John Anderson song on my iPod, if you must know.

Bragging is my right as the winner of the pool. I brag, but the prize goes back into the hopper. The autographed ball will remain available for another day.

  • Fred

@obigon–I’m starting to come aronud to your way of thinking about AJ

  • Steve The Dog

    @ Evan
    who autographed the ball

  • Last of the Romohicans

@Evan – all’s fun in blogs and country.

In full disclosure, I work at a country radio station, and have for 7 of the last 10 years.

  • Evan Grant

@Steve: All the fellas who were at the event last night – Kevin Millwood, Tommy Hunter, David Murphy and Eddie Guardado.

  • adiosmofo

She seems a nicer person, but ,more importantly, she’s pretty hot.

certainly hotter x infinity than the usual Ranger sideline reporter

  • obagain

Jones is a good guy to bring off the bench once a week but he is not an every day player.
Early in the season he was hot but didnt play much.
They started giving him more playing time and he cooled off.
Then after sitting a while he got hot again so they have had him in every since and he has not produced.

  • scooper

Evan hasn’t entered the contest all year, and it’s not like anyone else picked Hamilton in the first. I think he ought to enter every night.

  • Marcus

I’m curious to hear who everyone thinks she get demoted should Feliz come up in the next week. And also, what role would he fill in a bullpen that is doing quite well lately?

  • Marcus

Bloop and a blast, boys. C’mon, make it happen.

  • obagain

marcus, it could be a pitcher getting traded also.
I would think mathis would be the odd man out and feliz would take the place of o’day.
That would allow them to use o’day and cj in the 8th and not over use either guy.

  • JustSaying

yeah evan….we want to see your prediction every night……..lead us to the promised land………

  • obagain

Smoak just hit his second double of the night to drive in davis who doubled in front of him.
Smoak is finally starting to hit in AAA.

  • scooper

@marcus: mathis or nippert (but the call-up is dependent on the Rangers’ needs; if they don’t think they need him yet, they won’t call him up). Personally, I think he’ll be here next week.

  • scooper

@obagain: was that right-handed or left-handed? I’m more impressed if it is right-handed.

  • JustSaying

heard from a source of two sources that at season’s end mlb will lead the banks into a friendly takeover because hicks is so far underwater there’s no deal that would bring him to the table bring cash……so he defaults……wonder what that would do to his credit score?

is every move that jd now takes subject to mlb oversight, at least theoretically?

  • Evan Grant

@scooper, JustSaying: If I make a prediction every night, it’s just going to bring my percentage down. Why not retire on top. I think I’ll only make calls when it’s pretty obvious.

@Marcus, obagain: The Rangers are going to have to move two pitchers off the staff in order before bringing up Feliz. One pitcher will have to be removed in order to create a roster spot for an extra bench player next week. The second would be the guy Feliz would replace. My guess would be Nippert outrighted and Mathis optioned. But Mathis has not allowed a run in relief. The bullpen is pitching quite well as a group. No need to make a move just to bring Feliz up. It’s either necessitated by an injury or poor performance only.

  • JustSaying

so we play with what we’ve got and run with that………the minors are our trade partner……

  • obagain

    scooper, he is 2-3 tonight.
Both doubles and 1 against a rightie and 1 against a leftie, both drove in a run.

  • scooper

@evan: I’ll be interested in seeing when you think it is pretty obvious!

  • Little O

@Evan- so I guess it stands to reason that if Elvis keeps that up we should send him down to OKC because his defense is irrelevant?

  • scooper

@obagain: great! if he has figured it out, he’s actually done so pretty quickly!

  • JustSaying

that kinsler in the batting cage promo spot is the best yet………..

  • Marcus

@Evan: I agree with you on Feliz and that’s kinda the point I wanted to make. The bullpen, for the most part, has not been the problem this year. And since Grilli has arrived, everyone’s role has been more defined and they’ve pitched quite well.

On another note, can the Rangers update their commercials so they don’t have to show the one with the little girl and Kinsler wearing the Gorbachev helmet?

  • Evan Grant

@Little O: Not at all, but I think he is moving into the area where he’s going to have to start making adjustments to how pitchers are attacking him and he’s going to have to fight off late-season fatigue. He’s not gone through the stress of 162-game season.

  • Marcus

Nice to see Blue’s strike zone has expanded as the game has gone on……

  • Evan Grant

@Marcus: The Gorbachev helmet. … Brilliant!

  • obagain

This is where it would be nice to have borbon on the bench to run for jones.

  • Marcus

@Evan: Thanks, but I can’t claim that one as my own. I read that at one of the Newberg forums back when they intro’d the new jersey and helmet.

There was the bloop, now we need a blast.

  • scooper

I think TAG was wrong on that one. I think it was Nellie.

  • Steve The Dog

I am flapping my wings, Marlon is about to go DEEP, (right after these messages) I hope I don’t get too tired during the commercials

  • obagain

    Definatly cruz.

  • Fred

Gotta give AJ credit for preventing the DP, there

  • The Golden One

Rangers pitchers till bedeviled by bottom third of the lineup. 5 for 15 with two runs scored, both knocked in by the 9-hole hitter.
Losing is one thing, getting beat by a team’s worst hitters is lack of focus by the pitcher.

  • scooper

@obagain: Kins doesn’t have a stance that is that open; has to be Cruz.

  • Steve The Dog

the flapping of the arms doesn’t work

  • Steve The Dog

Ranger’s Captain walked into a bar
The bartender says, “Hey buddy, why the long face?”

  • DC

Feliz 1 inning 2 strike outs so far tonight

  • obagain

Feliz in the 8th, K, GO, K for a perfect inning.

  • Marcus

@ The Golden One: I have to disagree. Padilla was on, he got squeezed a couple of times and the guys just got hits. Despite Padilla’s final box, he didn’t deserve this.

  • obagain

scooper, I said it was cruz.

  • scooper

    That’s back-to-back nights for Feliz.

  • Marcus

Looking to the 9th, does Murphy hit for Teagarden or Elvis?

  • scooper

@obagain: I know. I meant to agree and comment on TAG saying it was Kins. Sorry I wasn’t more clear.

  • JustSaying

the retro batting helmet just makes it more vintage kinsler……..he agreed to wear it………

  • Little O

@Evan- just throwing it out there ala the davis situation ;)

  • obagain

Evan, if the rangers dont call up feliz until the roster expand, wouldnt moving him to the BP be a failed experiment?
If the rangers truely feel like he is a BP guy then use him in a trade to get a real starter here.

  • Badspellr

@Evan. Please ask Wash why on earth Cruz bats seventh instead of sixth. Byrd is a nice little player and all, but seriously. Dumb move.

  • adiosmofo

    @oba: why?

  • The Golden One

@Marcus Not just tonight. It was the story of the Seattle series. Cruel and unusual way to lose.

  • Fred

Bad–now you get a hint. Byrd is a proven pro

  • Marcus

@The Golden One: True; but Kubel had something to say about this one.

  • obagain

adios, you can find BP guys much easier than starters.
If feliz is a BP guy his value will never be higher than right now so you maximise the value and get a starter that can help you.

  • adiosmofo

    What is he’s Papplebon?

  • scooper

Yup. Before everyone else decides he is a bullpen guy, too.
But I don’t think they have made a decision past this year. It sounds to me like they think he can help in the ‘pen this year and they will re-elvauate in the off-season.

  • obagain

okc trying to rally and get feliz the win.

  • Marcus

@OB: Don’t know about that one. Think about if the Yankees had decided to trade Rivera in ’95 because they already had an established closer.

  • Fred

    adios,
My kids and II find your user name offensive. Could you, perhaps, consider shortening it by 4 letters?

  • Little O

Good night! Off to watch Angels – A’s

  • obagain

If rivera had been a top 5 prospect and he brought you a ready starter and a young starter which would you rather have?
Look at your top closers and how many were touted as closers?
They were starters that couldnt cut it and wound up there.
How many closers come up thru the minors and become top closers?

  • Fred

Padilla’s problem is lack of make up/self discipline.
If we could put his stuff tother with Milwood/Feldman/Hunter’s make up, he’d be an ace. As it is, we just have Padilla and his teases of brilliance.

  • scooper

@Fred: unfortunately, anyone who chooses a username like that obviously doesn’t care if anyone else finds it offensive.

  • Fred

@Scooper–I know. but I had hoped that a bit of peer pressure might help–and might bring Evan in.

  • Jack Daddy

Bummer game. Reminds me of the llast game, where we had several rocket outs and their bleeders found a home (of course kubel had the blast).

There was (what looked) to be a missed called 3rd strike that would have gotten us out of 2nd. Was that a bad call? That was huge.

  • scooper

@Jack: that pitch looked like a strike, but the ump did a pretty good job of calling it both ways. we can’t really complain too much about one pitch.
@Fred: Evan’s doing the post-game on TV, and he left before the game ended, so he hasn’t seen your comment yet.

  • scooper

@obagain: are you watching the post-game? That was supposed to be Ian!

  • obagain

scooper, didnt watch the post game, was watching the OKC game.
No way that was kinsler, he is not open like that.

  • scooper

they said it was Kins. they even showed them side-by-side and obviously Ian’s stance isn’t that open, but they still said it was Ian. They said it was about half and half with people thinking it was Ian or Nellie.

  • obagain

Ian has the hip wiggle and a closed stance, they are morons.

  • scooper

I agree. who won the OKC game?

  • obagain

OKC. They were down 7-4 in the 8th and come back to tie it in the 8th and scored 2 in the 9th to win 9-7.

  • scooper

    Thanks!
