Rangers Frank Francisco Headed To Disabled List

UPDATED (4:25 p.m.)

ARLINGTON – RHP Frank Francisco has walking pnuemonia and is headed to the disasbled list. The Rangers have recalled RHP Willie Eyre to replace Francisco, whose DL placement is retroactive to July 11. He would be eligible to return on Sunday when the Rangers are in Kansas City if he responds to medication.

Francisco was first bothered by flu-like symptoms on Saturday night and the situation got progressively worse on Sunday. He was unavailable to pitch in Sunday’s 5-3 12-inning win over Minnesota. He was told not to report to the ballpark on Monday. If the Rangers have a save opportunity on Monday, it’s likely they will turn to LHP C.J. Wilson, even though he threw 28 pitches in two innings of work on Sunday.

    I know they need a fresh arm, but to DL Frank with the flu? It better not be his shoulder again.

    As I said before…I’ve about had it with him, at least in the closer role. You need to know you have someone to close out a game on a nightly basis. It seems all we’ve known most night this season, is he’s not available for one reason or another.

    Our future is with Feliz as the closer.

    Then get him up here…you hate to not have him available for this Boston series (Frankie) but we did need to have some freshness in there after last night.

    i think the key thing to understand is that:

    1. they burned up a significant part of the pen last night and this move allows them to avoid sending mathis or nippert down for 10 days (the min);
    2. Frankie will only be unavailable for 3 games and eligible to come off on Friday. Assuming being sick kept him out for today, that means the DL is costing just 2 games;
    3. If he is out sick, that exasperates the bullpen shortage they are facing tonight (by my count, CJ, Mathis and Nipper are unavailable, leaving Eddie, Grilli and maybe O’Day available. Jennings probably could go 1 inning, but you definitely don’t have a long-man).

    It would be a smart move, imo.

    Well, tomorrow is Eyre’s birthday so maybe this is his gift…now if he can reciprocate.

    I’m still frustrated that the Rangers color man did not know that Frankie was sick and unavailble last night. is a little inight into the game too much to ask of a game analyst?

    Bob – radio or TV?

    Josh and Tom on TV knew that he was sick towards the end of the game and discussed it a couple of times.

    Ranger Fan…so if a guy gets the flu and it escalates into somethng a bit more serious, that becomes grounds for dumping the guy overboard?

    Geez, hope you weren’t one of those who was screaming for CJ Wilson to be released in April…cause you’re basically asking for him to be the closer now.

    SUCKS.

    Not ripping Frankie for being sick, hope he gets well, but generally speaking I agree with RANGERS FAN above…we need some dependability.

    Oh…and some offense too. :)

    GO Rangers, maybe having the nice crowd and the big, bad Red Sox in town will get their blood flowing.

    Evan, what’s the latest on Thomas Diamond? I haven’t seen anything on him lately.

    Frankie on the mend

    If it is really pneumonia, don’t expect him back by the weekend. And if he is back by the weekend, don’t expect him to have much stamina, much less good stuff.

    That illness comes on fast and lingers for awhile. Unfortunately I’m speaking from experience.

    Wash & Maddux knew Frankie was sick last night, and they still let C.J. pitch two innings. I know he was lights out last night, and I realize the Rangers were desperate to get at least one win from the Twins, but dosen’t foresight tell you that the team might need C.J. tonight?
