ARLINGTON - Omar Vizquel was just scratched from the starting lineup with flu-like symptoms, replaced by Elvis Andrus.
And bad news for knuckleball fans. Tim Wakefield, originally scheduled to start Wednesday night’s series finale for Boston, has been placed on the disabled list with a bad back. Nederland’s own Clay Buchholz was recalled and will start against Vicente Padilla.
6:53: Nelson Cruz, out of the lineup again with a slight fracture of his right ring finger, said he felt 90 percent. He could be available tonight as a pinch-hitter and is expected to be available to start Wednesday. Said it’s most painful when he’s swinging and makes contact.
6:59: Evan reports Rangers assistant G.M. Thad Levine confirmed Matt Harrison will make a rehab start on Wednesday night in Frisco against San Antonio.
7:18: First of two in Kansas City is over, Angels winning 8-5. (Porch patrol, can you see the out-of-town board well?)
7:34: So you’re Elvis Andrus, figuring you have a night off. Then Omar Vizquel can’t go and before the second inning is out, the S.S. Ortiz is bearing down on you at second base.
Not that there’s any comparison between the 2008 and 2009 models of Tommy Hunter, but when he faced the Red Sox last summer in Boston, he didn’t get six batters out.
7:45: Rangers manager Ron Washington this afternoon said closer’s duties will be handled this evening by committee. Isn’t looking to turn to C.J. Wilson again. And the plan is for the club to discuss the possibility of subtracting a reliever for another position player after seeing how things go tonight. Also hoping not to use Dustin Nippert tonight considering the 40-something pitches that he threw on Sunday night.
8:00: Kinsler, on these foul outs at or near the wall, looks like a small wide receiver who isn’t afraid of taking the hit on a route over the middle.
8:02: The Hunter pitch totals: 11-17-11-11 for 50 through four. At this rate, he’s going to beat Feldman and Holland to completing seven innings.
8:12: The Royals have backed ex-Ranger Bruce Chen with a run in the bottom of the first.
8:15: You in the Porch no doubt see Jason Grilli has begun stretching.
8:31: Jason Jennings warming. Credit Dustin Pedroia with a 10-pitch at-bat turned into a two-out single before Kevin Youkilis’ double.
8:34: To me pounding the strike zone shouldn’t mean always throwing a first-pitch strike. It does mean not falling behind many hitters. Exhibit A: Tommy Hunter through six has gone 2-and-0 to only two batters: Jason Bay on his second-inning walk and Jed Lowrie in the sixth when he hit the fly to center.
8:42: Hunter’s ERA in five Texas starts now 2.17 – seven earned in 29 innings.
9:01: With Darren O’Day warming, note that he has pitched each of the past two nights. On Sunday, pitched a full inning (10 pitches) against the Twins allowing a walk and getting a strikeout. Last night, two-thirds of an inning (17 pitches) against the Red Sox when Washington got him after giving up a single, a steal and an RBI single.
9:14: Grilli was up and apparently is done. Now Wilson is throwing. Hmm.
9:25: Here’s everyday C.J.
Baseball at the ballpark. Hard to tell who is who though cause we are all spread out. Saw Ehron, Dan and Evan and I heard a rumor that jb is out here.
Is there any reason other than a hangnail to scratch a knuckleballer? Heck, you can throw one of those with a severed leg!
Josh lewin just tweeted that andrus is a last minute replacement for visquel who has flu like symptoms.
Hey, Jeff! Ready for another Rangers’ victory?
Let’s go Rangers!
First Frankie and then Omar. Hopefully nothing is spreading.
Did we catch a good break or bad break with the pitching change for tomorrow?
248, row 14, seat 26. where you guys at? is evan with us up here tonight?
Lord, this is looking familiar. C’mon Andruw
Me thinks it’ll be slow here tonight…
Definitely slow so far…
Who would like a do over on the possible Beckett trade from years past? Remember how against trading Blalock we were…if only we knew.
Hank, we need a hit!
Can see the out of town scoreboard fine from the porch.
Yes!!!
It will be slower but we need to make a good showing for evan.
Wish I could have gone tonight.
Hank is looking better and better, we should be able to get a decent value for him.
Love the double steal!
@obagain: that’s what I’m thinking, too!
huge hit by hank
RF, not all of us were against it, any time you get a quality starter for hitter you jump on it.
I didnt like the hamilton trade for that reason, it has worked out but that was a huge gamble for each team.
@obagain- You think they will actually trade him? (did we talk about this last night?) I don’t think they would at this point.
I like it but what was he thinking trying to go for 2?
Oh Papi….that was a bad idea…but good for us.
maybe 50 lbs ago papi…
just took the liberty of upgrading my seat. row 7 now. hamilton territory.
RF, you dont give hank away but we have replacement for him so if we can get a couple of good prospects I would in a second.
We will not resign him so if we can get a piece for next year, especially if it is a aa 3b prospect I am for it.
I think we were being played in the Beckett talk. I think they wanted Hanley and used us to make it happen.
Nice to see a few early, that’s always positive.
@Jeff – I got a pic of my dog/cat laying together (that never happens!) want to post it? It’ll blow the page views UP! (I also have a pic of me with a harlem globe-trotter, but I don’t know how much that’s worth to anyone but me.)
Nice to see Kins take a pitch or 2 and then line one inside the bad, the Blalock get on top of one for aline drive 2 RBI’s. Even Young’s out was a hooking liner.
Here. 247 row 2. Isle.
so, remember a week or so ago, when I mentioned the MLB.tv free trial? Turns out it wasn’t til 7/21, it was for 10 days, which started for me on the 10th – so I’m back to streaming the radio broadcast and using gameday. BOO @ MLB Advanced Media
nice catch kins
How huge would it be for hunter to out pitch beckett.
@obagain- Oh I agree with you. I’m for trading Hank. But I’m not sure they’d do it, especially if they aren’t making any other moves.
I can see a hang nail being a problem for a knuckle baller, the way they dig the nails in. Can throw it with a severed leg, but ned pain free nails.
Joaquin Arias just hit a grand slam of all people.
@jb
I think a number of us are in 247, rows 2-8 or so.
Last@
you might check again I still have tree trial tonight
I’m for trading Hank, but not just for the sake of trading him. If no real value offered, keep him and see what happens later.
OKC scores 7 in the 2nd including a grand slam by arias.
Almost totally off the wall question
I heard a rumor that Omar has 3 pet kangaroos. Can anyone verify this?
If it’s true, I can’t believe Lewin hasn’t been all over this quirky fact already.
LT – read the forums, it was 10 days from activation. I got a head start and did it the day before the break ended. If I knew that, I’d have waited until the rangers played that Friday for it.
@Ben…yes. Pictures have surfaced.
Lets see…Who is in the market for a poor fielding corner infielder with a an OBP of .300 and a big chunk of change left on his deal? Prospects in return? Um, no. The reality is he probably clears waivers.
Fred, exactly right, if you are trading him for 3rd teir prospects just let him play the year out.
@obagain-were Davis and/or Smoak pert of the inning?
@Ben – they were all about it like last sunday vs Seattle. He brought them for show and tell and Hank was appearantly a big fan.
This is random but I can’t remember a year where the grass looked so bad at the ballpark…what gives?
@Fred- Davis singled and Smoak grounded into the inning ending double play.
badspellr, but he also has 19 HR and 46 RBI, a playoff team could use those power numbers and all his numbers are rising now.
those of you at the game, what’s the ratio of rangers fans vs boston “fans” tonight?
Fred, that is the amazing part, they were not.
Tommy Hunter’s MLB.com pic makes him look like Richard from “The Real Estate Pros” (someone out there with a wife has to know who I’m talking about!)
@jackman. hicks cant pay the water bill
RF-Smoak need time to grow and refine there, hope Davis hits his way back to Arlington by the deadline, not matter what happens with Hank.
Had a lot of fun with boston fans at the beginning of the year and they were talking about a possible trade for young, they were convinced they didnt need young because lowrie was just as good a hitter as young.
I love it when you have all the numbers to back your point and the other people make excuses.
Lowrie will never come close to the hitter young is.
They have changed the infield grass twice this season.
jb…I forgot about that! That explains why the lights keep going out this year…can’t pay the electric bill either!
It is good to see boggs is back in the lineup in OKC, you never know how a shoulder will react.
@Fred- I agree. His current avg is .148. Hitting better as of late but definitely doesn’t seem ready for the big leagues. And I’m ready for Davis up here as soon as they are.
@jackman: Heard an interview with Kinsler where he said the same thing. He said visiting teams complain after every series and players ask him when they get to second base whats the deal with the grass.
The strange part of the grass is no one wants to talk about it.
Someone screwed up and it will not be right until next year, july is not the best time to try and resod.
What is Hamilton’s deal…he’s looked way over-matched. We need the old Josh back…
Sadly, Hammy doesn’t look at all confident and comfotrable up there.
RF, I wish they would have left hamilton in AAA for another 2-3 games, he was not exactly lighting it up down there so he could have a little more time to get his timing.
Anybody know what kind of grass they had? Went to? Went back to again?
I almost wish they would buy some of that green grass spray paint that Billy Mays was pitching before he passed. Spray paint the bad spots so it won’t look so bad from a distance.
@Regarding the seven-run RedHawks second inning, Davis and Smoak were each 1-for-2 with a single. Smoak hit into a DP to end the inning
Off topic but I was going thru my baseball cards today looking for a card for someone and came across a gastonia rangers minor league set from 1987, gonzalez, sosa, palmer and pavlik.
Sosa is listed at 6′ even and 165 LBS. He filled out a bit later in his career.
Wow kins!
Freakin Nice Play Kinsler
Hank wasnt close, if kins doesnt bail him out that would have been embarrasing.
Hope he didn’t bruise his ribs (or worse) on that ridge. Hank had no play from the angle he took. That’s 2 nice plays on foul pop ups for Kins tonite
What a catch…does anyone else think there needs to be padding or something done about the sharp corners of the walls? Thats going to hurt someone.
i’ve been really impressed with hunter thus far. very composed for a youngster, and his pitch count is only at 50 through 4
Batting stance guy is the new Fox robot
I know they used to have TifWay 419 from Tri-Tex Grass because I had them sod my yard. But they must have switched companies. Infield looks good but RF, foul lines, and behind homeplate looks bad!
RF, that is something that wont be addressed until someone gets hurt, then they will act surprised and put some padding there.
@RF-I had the same thought (about padding)
well that’s a pretty idiotic approach for them to take.
FYI- Throw that one in there with the “Chris Davis would have made that play” plays…
I like that Hicks needed money so bad that he added those two rows on each side and made foul territory even smaller. If you have seen those walls up close they look like they were put up fast and cheap.
Star Telegram reports that they went to Zeon Zoysia grass.
http://www.star-telegram.com/284/story/1494202.html
@fox: that’s because they were.
I still think kins would be a great LF.
He plays those pop up and short fly balls really well which means he gets a great jump on the ball.
He has an above average arm and good speed.
Hey-If Hicks won’t fix the rip in the RCF fence pad (which makes us look like trailer trash), he’s not about to add more padding
it is amazing how far he ran for that ball!
Good thing we had byrd in right, no way cruz gets there.
@jackman grass costs money and this isn’t sunny california……..
I believe the new grass is a hybrid. Kentucky Bluegrass/Northern California Sensamilla/Featherbed Bent.
@obagain: he probably would have been sliding for that last one, too.
Def like Byrd has played Im sure gives Hunter confidence to go after the hitters
Fred, it could be that the material out there is custom made and will take a couple of days to fix.
I remember that happening in seattle years ago and when we came back weeks later it was still ripped.
@obagain- He probably would, but he’s getting to be a pretty damn good 2B, and those are harder to find. Hes not a bad athlete
hunter is now added to my do not touch list…..harrison also…….nice couple of sophomores or is hunter still considered rookie?
Dan, wondered if anyone was going to use the caddy shack reference.
59 pitches thru 5 innings. Hunter is looking great!
@justsaying: hunter is still a rookie,
@obagain-1) Byrd vs. Cruz: yes, Nelson does seem to give the walls a wide berth.
2) I understand the potential situation with the fabric on the wall padding, but Hicks is the type of guy who makes you want to make fun of him.
I don’t think we have any shortage of outfielders so I doubt they would make that move.
Hunter is my game MVP so far.
Foxsports Under the Lights series features the Groundscrew this weekend!!! What great timing for that commercial!
I wouldnt put harrison in that list yet but he is close.
Remember we have feliz and perez close.
Then you have kiker, beavan and poveda that are not far away either, not enough room for everyone, which will be a great problem to have.
I’m going with Kinsler so far.
Yup. Kins would be a great choice, too.
@JS-Yes, Hunter’s a rookie. I was just thinking about what a difference from the last time Boston saw him. At the risk of incurring wrath, he reminds me (size, guts, pounding strike zone) of the mich maligned RickHelling when he was our ace in better years.
RF, but we also have a gold glove 2b in vallejo that is close to ready.
He will be on the 40 man so we need to use him or make him a trade chip.
section 247 row 8 sitting next to my little girl at her first game…..she one that has eaten everything
@obagain best MLB start of any of our guys that goes back to last season……if we can keep him on the field
@obagain: agree on Harrison. he has shown flashes of excellence, but he is inconsistent and on the DL too much to be untouchable.
How about hank with 2 RBI?
@justsaying…woah woah woah…you think this is the best start all year???
@fred: I was scared to compare him to Helling. I really got ripped the last time I mentioned Rick.
I could be wrong, but I think Justsaying was talking about Harrison.
OKC Update: Davis homers…2/3
Hunter, this year vs. last, might give those who are giving up on Holland something to think about. Yes, I know Hunter went back down, for a while.
It’ll be interesting to see how Hunter does now that the Bosox have seen him a couple of times. So far, so good while I was typing (with 2 fingers).
oh ok..sorry I read that wrong. I was gonna say..Hunter’s doing well but…
He is looking better than helling did.
That brings up an interesting point.
The BP is known as a launching pad, does that mean our pitchers are even better than what their era says because of the park or was the park a launching pad because our pitching, until this year, was just that bad?
Greatness, Dan. That one went right over my head.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQjqvEktoSo&feature=PlayList&p=6369BE43359D4A40&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=21
That was an awfully nice curve he just broke off on the all star 2B–then didn’t get the call on the next one.
@rangersfan: now, if he WAS talking about Hunter, I agree with you!
What timing on the Batting Stance guy!
Man, but y’all are having too much fun.
Warm night with high humidity and hunter doesnt appear to be tired at all.
I didn’t see the answer to the previous two batting stance questions. I thought Murph and Hamilton. Was I right?
Had them both into 2 strike counts…gotta be able to get the out.
Scoop- As to the Helling comparison, when you get to be as old as I am, you lose fear of being ripped.
@Apples
sadly it’s at least 1:1 Rangers to Sox fan.
I’m not sure which ones you mean, but this one is Youkilis.
Oh! last night it was Big Papi. I think the night before it was Hamilton (or was that the one that was Sierra?).
@fred: I was being a little facetious. I don’t really care too much what anyone thinks of me (or my opinions).
Hunter doesn’t have good pace this inning…not sure if that means anything.
Nice pitch from the kid.
Good job battling back by Hunter
Lewinism #1 for the night. “The Big Pop Up” That is Terrible.
85 pitches thru 6. I say he comes back out for the 7th. what do you guys think?
Without question Scoop
He got through the meat of the order, I would let him with a short leash
Scoop-After almost 4 months of the season, I know you well enuf to realize that you speak your mind and damn the torpedos. I was just using the opportunity to morn the fact that very old ex-coaches have little to lose in the court of (younger) public opinion.
Lets get some runs to support Hunters efforts
i was referring to harrison’s streak…..it goes back to last year and it is the best start (callup) of any of the golden arms……
I think he comes back out ESP with CJ unavailable.
I would but you start someone warming at the start of the inning.
Wow- Beckett’s only got 69 pitches. Long nite for Rangers hitters.
I feel a HR coming on.
What’s the bullpen plan…No CJ and No Frankie, close game…O’Day has pitched the last 2 nights. Available but not fresh…we need runs. What was that running idea by Young?
@fred: I seriously doubt that you are too much older than I am.
young did the right thing, dont give them the easy DP.
Ok, don’t trust my feelings anymore.
Guess not.
Jennings in.
@obagain: I agree. there wasn’t much hope, but you don’t just give it to them.
if Jennings was going to be the next guy in, I can see bringing him in to start the inning.
beckett has averaged 10 pitches an inning since his 22 pitch 1st inning. not too shabby
…but I still think I would have let Hunter come out for the 7th.
mlb.gameday had that pitch totally in the strike zone.
This will come back to bite us..always does. Missed call by the ump…leading to a walk…and then…
as did espn gamecast
He struck bay out just didn’t get the call.It was right in the middle of the plate too.
Bad call on that strike. Maybe Wash wanted to bring in Jennings now because he is better to start off an inning. If Evan was here he would be happy.
Hunter starts the inning and see if he can finish the 7th.
how did the ump miss that??
Visit the mound salty…he’s not responding well to the “disappointment”!
I would of started Hunter. He deserved the chance.
Hunter leaves the game with a chance to win and a positive experience to take with him. As long as we win, this decision will look OK. I’m afraid this will blow up on us because we are short at the back end of the ‘pen tonight.
I think thats why Hunter starts the inning. Grilli comes in if he gets into trouble. Jennings has the 8th.
Come on guys, hunter out pitched beckett thru 6, he deserves this win.
@fox: I agree.
this is amazingly stupid!!!! Washington needs to be FIRED! There was NO reason to pull hunter with 85 pitches…in a 2-1 game…with a bullpen that has gone 11 in 2 games. Wash makes some truly idiotic decisions!!!!
Get the K
Maddox has a large say in the usage of pitchers as well…
Matt, you are preaching to the choir.
Really?
That is pathetic. Jennings is the rested pitcher.
Matt, I’ve learned this; I don’t always agree with Wash’s decisions, but rarely are they without some degree of thought and logic. It just appears that way because he looks at stats that we don’t know exist.
Jennings really needed to help the team and is not doing it.
In a limit defense of Jennings on both walks he did throw strike 3 that was called a ball
1) OK, no excuses for Jennings, here.
2) Scoop-try 74!
All’s well that ends well.
True, Fox. Got himself out of it…that was close.
@Fred: OK. you have me beat (49)!
I think there was a lot of relief in that applause.
@scoop-OOps, typo. 64. Even I’m not 74 yet.
ryans dad, but he looks at those stupid stats and dosent always go with how the game is being played.
You take out your hottest starter because the guy you want to use next you want to start an inning because he allows runners to score.
If that is the case you are hurting the team.
He also used cj for more than an inning on consecuative days when your closer is on the DL. Not good use of your BP.
@fox: true.
Grilli in the 8th? Who gets the 9th? Holland (kidding)?
Chris Davis just had a 12 pitch at bat…grounded out but still…good things are happening for him
Again, a fast guy like borbon off the bench right now would be huge.
Scoop-When I was your age I was still young, and big. Still paying softball in the heat.
Grilli may go 2. Or it could be Eddie in the 9th?
That is you want speed on the bench.
RF-Good news on CD
Not here to argue the merit of his decisions. He makes some crazy moves some times, but they are not “idiotic”.
OH PLEASE NO! No Eddie..unless we get more runs.
Good decoy by Bosox RF, but Jones runs like Papi (or like old folks make love)!
@fred: I was a catcher for too long – bad feet, knees, and hips (not to mention overweight). I just feel like I am 64.
Crooked number would be nice here.
Dang it Marlon…you cannot strike out in the situation.
I like Murph here. I said it before Josh.
CD had a 12 pitch AB that ended in a groundout. But 12 is nice and he hasn’t had a strikeout in 3 games i believe.
…not to mention that I screwed up my shoulder and it never healed right. I couldn’t throw a ball back to the pitcher right now.
Man cant believe he made it
hahaha wow…that was a hard slide! Good effort!
Thank you! [I was just about to have a heart attack!]
Jones looked sloooowwwww.
Actually two bad throws.
Jones is sloooowwwww!
I love Murphy up to bat with someone on third. He seems to know what to do to get them home.
Lord, that was like watching a hippo in a 30 yard dash, But God bless him, he rolled across the plate
Worried about ODay pitching a couple in a row?
Fred, that comparison made me laugh out loud. You gotta love the faces on Kinsler and Cruz when he was coming back to the dugout too..hah
Fred, you are wonderful!
Hippos are kinda fast, I think. Or is that Rhinos.
Isn’t it 3 games in a row? Pretty sure he pitched Sunday.
Gonna have to start leaving twinkies on home plate when Jones gets on base.
@fox: i believe o’day has already pitched 2 in a row. I think this would be his third.
did Eyre go last night?
yikes…Beckett is scary. I’m always a fan of emotion in a player..but he seems unstable, yet awesome.
why didn’t blalock go to second on the murphy fly ball……
@RF: Yep, 3 straight. They got a couple hits and one run on him last night.
Eyre didnt pitch last night
@last: No, but do you want him closing? Especially against Boston?
@RangersFan: think of Bob Gibson.
I’d go with Grilli at this point but…
3 ground outs for the Sox tonight. Wow.
o’day in eighth? who is closing?
@JustSaying, because he knew Salty would strikeout so why waste the energy to run all that way.
One thing that annoys me about wash, he’s said several times that he was going to rest salty more yet it’s doesn’t happen. I really think it would help salty and Teagarden deserves more time.
@justsaying: I give up. I have no idea what they are doing.
@Scoop-don’t start me. Between FB/BB/BB and track, I had 2 knee operations by the time I was 20, plus permanently separated shoulder, and, later, a torn MCL, tore my one remaining meniscus, tore my rotator cuff, subscapula, adductor muscle in my thigh and a fore arm tendon., plus assorted broken fingers and toes. I was a catcher, too, through the 1st broken finger. I’ll give you a hint for the future, old age (especially for old jocks) ain’t for wimps. But at least it got me a college education and a job.
It has to be Grilli? Or is Wash going to drive us crazy, mess with our minds and bring in Eyre in his first appearance to close.
I haven’t been overly impressed with Tegarden this year…maybe he hasn’t had a lot of time. Not sure.
Way to gut up O’Day! Now for the 9th…yikes, who will it be…
I am going out on a limb here because I’ve been wrong about every other prediction tonight and say Eddie will close tonight.
@fred: I’ve kinda figured that out. the problem is, I am a wimp!
Yeah, but Fred… How’s your hairline?
I think that would be 3 for Eddie also
Smoak .143 BA i thought he would start hitting by now.
I figure we score 5 in the 8th, and don’t have a closer.
@Ryan’s Dad…that is a scary thought.
Oh, then I withdraw my objection.
They just said CJ. Maybe they want him to get more surgery.
WHAT! CJ is warming up in the pen…that is a HORRIBLE idea. Soon we’re gonna have no closer.
@scooper – totally agree on the helling comp. Not just the body or the pitchng repotoire (surely I misspelled that) – but the mentality on the hill and the approach. I love the guy.
@fred – re/ whether holland will show the same improvement with experience – just made the same point to Evan. of course for me, there’s my wife, two boys and then Holland!
@fred: here is the true test for an ex-catcher – do your thumbs pop out of joint when you use a manual can opener?
@scoop-at least you and Salty have something in common (inability to get the ball back to the pitcher
Good time for one of those big flies Kins likes to hit.
@fred: unfortunately, that’s about the only thing I have in common with Salty!
manual can opener? What’s that? Do you have a manual refridgerator too?
Seriously…this is not good. CJ pitched 2 innings Sunday and inning and 1/3 last night. He cannot pitch tonight. Small Ball. Get a run. Let Grilli pitch the 9th.
@all: just for a second – think of this team next year (with a year’s experience under their belts).
Dangit
As good as a bunt
@last: nope. I have an electric can opener, too, because I can’t use an old-fashioned one!
They should let elvis steal home.
Beckett can turn it on when he wants/needs.
@rangersfan: I agree. I wouldn’t let c.j. pitch tonight. maybe if he had only thrown 1 inning in those last 2 appearances, but Wash is asking for trouble.
Elvis did a great job!
Scary watching Elvis step on bat
Helluva job by elvis to get young to second. Got us a run. Nice rook!
anyone complaining because Hamilton swung at the first pitch?
Great inning!
1. Hamilton needs to come through.
2. I’m not kidding…if CJ gett hurt. Fire Washington. You can’t do that.
THANK YOU HAMMY!
Should have put a twinkie on 1st
And fail fail…fails. He did’t run hard that time.
Here comes CJ…he shouldnt be pitching.
I don’t know why any pitcher would still throw Hamilton a first pitch strike
NO reason for CJ to come in now atleast till theres trouble.
This is not the playoffs when all rules are called off. We need CJ for the long run. He just was hurt last year. We have a 3 run lead. We do not need CJ pitching.
@last–hairline’s great and not much grey, but fortunately , I’m of well above average height, because there ain’t much left in back. I try not to sit down w/o a cap.
@scoop-broke one thumb (admit it was in basketball), but the other’s OK.
I always remember the description of shaking hands with Yogi (Garagiola??) “shaking hands with him was like shaking hands with a bucket of bolts” Coaches decided I might be able to pitch and saved my hands and groin. When i did,t pitch, stuck me at 1st, or CF (depending on who else was on the mound).
I have always suspected that you and I are kindred spirits–throw backs, even if you are still a bit wet behind the ears.
@scooper: absolutely not, he’s a great first pitch hitter, when it’s a strik. it’s just hamilton often swings at the first no matter where it is (see off speed pitch low and outside)
this reaks of desperation, almost as much as pitching Frankie w/ a 5-run lead. No one game is worth risking a player’s health.
His arm is tired. His command is going to be off. See, a walk.
Yeah, Fred, I think we are, too.
C.J. again? That’s three days in a row, four innings total, right? Why didn’t the Rangers bring up a closer from OKC to replace Frankie?
@fred: you would think that my right thumb would be OK, but it is from tag plays at the plate. Yes, I am from the old school. I was taught to use both hands on the tag, not the swipe tag that is in vogue now.
Good ? Bobby. Any chance of a late night call up for our Merry RedHawk?
@Bobby: 4 1/3 innings (2 on Sunday, 1 1/3 yesterday, and one tonight)
If they dont trust who they have in the bullpen lets bring up Feliz.
Thank you!
Never a doubt. I’ve always liked and had confidence in my man Ceej.
HELLO WIN COLUMN!!!!!!!!!!
KROD pitched 3 days in a row against the rangers last year (aug 28-30). and got 3 saves i might add. he also did it july 21-23 and april 23-25. not saying cj is krod, but it can be done. hopefully he can do it without getting hurt

WHERE ARE THE HATERS?? That was gutty…CJ, wow!
@bertie: it’s not just 3 days in a row – it is more than one inning both of the first 2 days.
wash is playing with fire…….
@rangersfan: yes, it was gutty. and yes, he did a great job. but it wasn’t SMART.
Gotta take my hat off to CJ. I never liked him, much. Air head/attitude, but he’s been a MAN the last 2 nites.
And, yes, Elvis did not look like a 20 yr old rookie in that run down. The kid has instincts.
scooper…I completely agree. But CJ still deserves the props.
If ain’t broke, dont’ fix it right? But should the Rangers look at CJ as a starter again? Not this year of course…..
Pay up baby and I don’t want any rubber checks tommy………
I am REALLY HAPPY thinking about this team next year (and NO, I am not writing off this year). I just expect great things, next year.
Well it worked i just hope CJ doesn’t go down like FF did earlier when they did this with him.
@scooper: fair point, hopefully he won’t pitch tomorrow. but with wash, ya never know…….
Now, who closes tomorrow?
I wonder if the Angels will lose another game this year?
O’Day and C.J. have each pitched 3 consecutive days.
@RangerRed: I think C.J. wants the closer job back…and he may just have it.
“Big Thunder” – now we have a nickname for Hunter.
Goodnite, all. Fun talk.
Scoop, I wish I knew you first hand.
@fred: maybe we’ll meet one of these days! I certainly hope so!
I think this Hunter kid might be pretty special! He’s got the confidence!
No Ranger starter is going to go past the 6th inning until the weather cools. And the Ranger bats are not going to be scoring a bunch of runs either. We’ve got to get some fresh bullpen arms up here and the hitters are going to have to score more runs to protect that bullpen.
Do they send down Eyre and bring up Feliz tomorrow so they will have a power guy in there? O’Day and CJ will undoubtedly not be available.
They have to clear a spot on the 40 for Feliz. and they need another infielder, too.
@Scoop-I’ve still got a ton of kids, and grand kids in the DFW area (remember my marital history You never know..
I’m glad to call you a friend.
As to Hunter, I’ve always liked him. He reminds me of me (as well as Helling) just a big ole country boy who won’t quit. About 40 years ago, I was pretty serious about judo. Taught it to kids. Competed until I tore my remaining meniscus against the 300 lb 3rd Army guy, It’s another connection to the big guy–and, I suspect that oriental viewpoint that those of us who really took it seriously got, might contribute to his remarkable maturity on the mound. It is remarkable.
RF- You’ve got a 40 man roster prob to work out, there
@Fred: he has really impressed me with his ability, attitude, maturity and pitchability. I am quickly becoming a HUGE fan.
@Fred: I would be honored to consider you a friend. Thank you! I must admit that this is the first time that I have made a friend on the internet (I guess that dates me, too, huh?), but this seems like a good time to start!
@scooper- they have to do something don’t they? They’ve got nothing in the pen. Dang you Frankie.
@Rangersfan: Dang you, Wash. He shouldn’t have pitched C.J. tonight. Then he would be available tomorrow. Frankie can’t help having walking pneumonia.
Well, I know. He’s just not on my high list due to his lack of reliability this year. I don’t know how you go into a game without your 7-8-9 inning pitchers and no power.
Unless it’s Salty, the first bunt is ALWAYS a foul ball (well, OK, maybe 95%). And they should go 1 more inning with O’Day in my book. But they won’t. Wash is sometimes too willing to be unconventional.
Well, let’s look at some Ranger hitters if we are going to talk about ‘reliability’.
I’m talking about available to play. You have to handle him with care this year…and that’s not a good feeling.
if guardado isn’t better by tomorrow, that means our pen is:
eyre,
Nippert
Mathis, and
really Grilli
Which means your closer is probably Grilli
The long man is Mathis. Eyre pitches the 7th and Nippert the 8th.
Wash will have no maneuverability with the pen. If a guy is “off” he’s going to have to finish his inning anyway.
The day off Thursday is huge. Should have full strength pen by Friday. Padilla is the key.
Bobby in Bryan– I’ll bet you a nickle Millwood goes 7 in his next 3 starts
I would just like to say that I think it is crap that the “free” Rangers tickets for voting for the All-Star game are not “free” at all….there is a 2 dollar convenience fee, and you have to bill it to your credit card.
This combined with the fact that you have to pay for onions on dollar hot dog night, just makes me sick of the penny pinching Rangers.
Fine, you want a convenience fee? Well, then you lost out on my 2 dollars and the 40 or 50 dollars I am sure I would have spent had I actually gotten “FREE” tickets!
Ok, rant against management over…..great game by the players! Go RANGERS!
@Jack: you were in 247 row 2?!?!?! i was in row 8 isle!!!! i yelled your name but saw no response so i thought that wasn’t you.
