Road To Arlington: Rangers Farm Report (7/21)

Michael Schlact

Michael Schlact

A quick injury note as we start our trip down the Road today: Frisco RHP Michael Schlact, who has struggled with shoulder pain all year, underwent surgery in Arlington yesterday to remove some loose bodies and repair small tears in his labrum and posterior cuff. It is essentially the same surgery that Eric Hurley underwent earlier this year. Schlact is expected to be ready to throw again in spring training, but his season is over.

Triple-A: Oklahoma City 3 @ New Orleans 1

RHP Josh Rupe (3-6; 5.91) enjoyed one of his finest starts since joining the RedHawks rotation, holding the Zephs to a run on four hits and a walk through six frames, fanning two. His batterymate, K-Rich (.211 / .293 / .421), did all of the damage for Oklahoma City with a three-run shot in the third.

CF Julio Borbon (.308 / .373 / .395) went 2-for-5 from the top of the order and is now hitting .378 / .429 / .444 in the month of July.

Double-A: San Antonio 2 @ Frisco 1

RHP Blake Beavan (1-3; 5.49) held the Missions to a pair of runs on eight hits over six and a third. As usual, he did not issue a base on balls, but unusually, he got more outs through the air than on the ground.

The RoughRiders were held to five singles and a double, which came from the bat of 2B Marcus Lemon (.293 / .356 / .360) in his 1-for-3 performance.

Advanced-A: @ San Jose 7, Bakersfield 1

Bakersfield starter RHP Kennil Gomez (3-8; 5.36) struggled, allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits and four walks in just three and two-thirds.

3B Jonathan Greene (.265 / .342 / .476) belted his 14th homer of the year in a 2-for-4 outing to account for the only Blaze run.

Class-A: @ Savannah 8, Hickory 0

A rough go of it for RHP Wilmer Font (6-2; 3.41) who saw the Sand Gnats put five runs on the board, only two of which were earned, during his three innings of work. He walked two and fanned one.

The Crawdads lineup managed just three singles and a triple by RF Eric Fry. They struck out 14 times.

Short Season-A: Everett 16 @ Spokane 10

2009 eighth rounder RHP Braden Tullis (3.29 ERA) struggled through is worst outing as a pro, getting touched up for four runs on seven hits over five frames. The 19 year old fanned five without issuing a free pass and induced seven ground outs against just three in the air.

And then the Aqua Sox teed off against RHP Kyle Ocampo (1-2; 9.17), hanging six runs, four earned, on five hits two walks and a wild pitch in just one inning.

The Indians got solo shots from RF Miggy Velazquez (.250 / .283 / .393), 2B Jason Ogata (.273 / .320 / .500), and 1B Clark Murphy (.227 / .289 / .347) who finished 3-for-4. LF Jared Prince (.269 / .374 / .487) delivered a two-run dinger and a walk in a 1-for-3 outing, driving in three overall.

Rookie: Giants 2 @ Rangers 1

Lanky RHP Eziquel Rijo (2-3; 4.91) was the unlucky loser in spite of delivering another outstanding start, holding the Giants to a run on one hit and a walk in five innings. It was the third time this year in six starts that Rijo has limited the opposition to a run or less in five innings.

1B Mike Ortiz (.306 / .375 / .389) doubled twice in a 3-for-4 outing while RF Guillermo Pimentel (.290 / .389 / .452) singled and walked in four trips. After getting off to a slow start in June (.182 / .217 / .364), Pimentel is delivering the breakout I had expected from him, hitting .350 / .469 / .500 in July.

    @ Mike

Whats the latest with Hurley? I never read anything about him. Is he expected to make full recovery?

  • texaslifter

Will Hurley play ball this winter?

  • popska

Seems like the farm pitchers are not going more than 6 or so innings. Is that on purpose?

  • gordosan

8-12 months is the typical time for full recovery from rotator cuff repair. I wouldn’t expect Hurley to pitch competitively until next spring.

    Mike –

Curious about your take on Rupe 2009:

    1) “He is what he is”;

    2) The Rangers sacrificed him last year with innings pitched; or

    3) ????

whats up with engle beltre? is he injured or suspended for some reason? it seemed like he was starting to put together a nice stretch of actually walking more frequently plus a little better contact rate.
