We cornered Nolan Ryan this week to get him to talk about that most surprising of Rangers strengths: The Bullpen. Hope I’m not spoiling the plot, but best line was when I asked him about his confidence in the bullpen and he says: “Well, it’s a lot higher than it was last year, I can tell you that.”
Some folks are saying Pitching hasn’t really improved; the fielding has. I think back to last year and tuning out when the bases were loaded b/c, likely as not we’d walk in a run. Don’t have the numbers (bet Evan does), but I don’t tune out with the bases loaded any more. I think starters going deeper has a lot to do with it. BP is not worn out and there is a better shot at having the right guy ready at the right time, and keeping people in their roles. And, of course, for both starters and BP, not getting behind in the count. Yes, fielding improvement has been a big factor, but seems to me that the pitching has a bit to do with the improvement.
the success of the bullpen….pure dumb luck has a lot to do with it…….grilli and o’day give jd a thumbs up……on cj give cj a thumbs up……jennings? not shown punch out stuff……no money spent on bullpen in off-season give hicks, nolan and jd thumbs down……
I don’t think they could have spent anymore on the bullpen and gotten any better results. $ in the bullpen rarely matters, unless it’s for an elite closer. That kind of expenditure for that kind of pitcher hasn’t been needed here. There may be room to criticize the hierarchy if that’s one’s thing but certainly not with regard to the bullpen.
