Just emptying out my trade deadline brain of some of the thoughts that have been going through my mind this week. We’ll get to the Roy Halladay stuff after the jump.
Former Rangers great Justin Duchscherer appears to be a week or two away from being ready to return to action after a scintillating rehab appearance for Sacramento on Sunday where Rangers scouts were on hand. He is scheduled to pitch another rehab on Friday. Of course, players on the DL can’t be traded, but it might possible that Oakland could activate him for a day and then immediately trade him. This is Duke’s walk year and his salary the rest of the way (less than $2 million) is something the Rangers might be able to take on. Just file that away.
Another former Rangers great, Doug Davis, is just sitting there. He’s owed about $2.75 million the rest of the way and is a free agent this winter, so adding him is probably not precluded for financial reasons. Davis has a big fan in Mike Maddux who resurrected his career in Milwaukee. In two of his past three seasons, Davis has done his best pitching in September. There’s no reason for Arizona to hold on to him.
The Diamondbacks would also make Jon Garland available, but he’s like, you know, really bad and RBiA has been very unkind to him.
The fact that the Rangers admitted that they thought they had Ryan Garko in hand before he was suddenly flipped to San Francisco for an excellent Cal League pitcher tells you something about what the Rangers are willing to give up for a right-handed bat. Evan advises that he was told the Texas offer was two players. My best guess is that Texas offered somebody like Carlos Pimetel and a low-level bat. Evan’s guessing Tim Murphy and a low-level bat. Had they gotten Garko, they certainly would have been out of the market for a bat. And now that he’s off the market, I don’t see an alternative that could be had for a package like that unless the Mets just decide to take whatever they can get for Sheff. And with all the turmoil at Citi these days, anything is possible.
There are various reports that Roy Halladay would consider waiving his no-trade clause to come to Texas, but it’s customary for players to ask the team trading for him to buy out the no-trade clause. That, along with the roughly $4.5 million he’s owed the rest of the way probably make it impossible for the Rangers to deal for him.
MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reported that Toronto demanded Derek Holland, Julio Borbon and Justin Smoak for Halladay and Texas said no. Where it went from there — if anywhere — is anybody’s guess. Assuming that is true, you have to wonder why Texas said no. I’m not suggesting that it’s a no brainer, just that it’s interesting to ponder the particular reasons that Texas said no.
Does losing Borbon create too much of a problem for Texas in center field next year? Josh Hamilton’s days in center field need to come to an end. Can Texas afford both Roy Halladay and Marlon Byrd? If they want to take on Halladay’s contract, it would seem that they’ll have to shed all of the expiring contracts.
The only other center fielder expected to be a free agent this winter is Rick Ankiel and Texas can’t afford him. Without Borbon, the Rangers are looking at a platoon of Murphy and Greg Golson in center field next year with Brandon Boggs as the extra outfielder (assuming Cruz in right and Hamilton in left). Golson’s numbers against lefties are actually palatable (.294 / .354 / .353 vs. LHP).
Did Texas say no because the demand included two of the Big Four? Surely they don’t think they can get Halladay for less than that, do they?
Did Texas say no simply to stall and see if the asking price went down?
Another thing that strikes me about Sullivan’s note is that Toronto wants Holland rather than Feliz and, it seems, Texas would rather keep Holland than Feliz. Just interesting.
With Philly out of the race for Halladay’s services, Toronto’s options come down to either Texas or Boston. There is talk about the Dodgers being in the hunt as well, but there’s no way they can match even a watered-down Rangers offer unless they put Clayton Kershaw in the package, and there’s no way they’d do that.
Boston could trump a deal headed by Derek Holland and Justin Smoak with an offer of Clay Buchholz and Lars Anderson (though Anderson is struggling a bit this year), but Boston would have to clearly outdistance any Rangers offer (add Ryan Westmoreland…at least) to entice Toronto to deal Halladay within the division. And Boston just might do that. When the Red Sox identify a guy they really want, they generally do whatever is necessary to get him.
About 31 hours to go.
Red Sox have to be considered a prohibitive favorite if there’s a deal a all. Dice-K is out, Smoltz has been ineffective, Wakefield is a twngy back away from the dl, and the Yankees are on a roll. Epstein is the new Al Davis. Pre insane rant days.
I am hoping Texas said no because they would be giving up three 2010 and onward starters under years of control for a 1.33 year rental who ultimately be (pick one) a Yankee, Red Sox, Halo.
IMHO with the current failed hitting said rental will not nail down the division title either this year. To many rookies and the veterans are classic Rudy All-or-Nothing long ball hitters.
If Davis had nailed down first Snoak might be expendable, but at this time I believe Smoak is the number 4 prospect in all MLB. His current numbers at AAA are poor, but he just came up and I believe is also coming off of an injury or illness. He is the future 1B untill Davis actually proves otherwise.
You addressed the CF position. Byrd might resign, but I am betting he goes elsewhere and Borbon, Cruz, Murphy, and Hamilton are next years OF with Boggs or Golson on call for the fifth OF.
Holland, despite what he says, will learn some additional pitches and improve his location as well. He will be a middle to back end guy next year after Padilla finally exits the Rangers.
So, do the Rangers really want to give up three potential 2010 starters for a rental plus eventual supplemental draft picks?
I hope not.
I think moving feliz to the pen scared some teams, are they getting a flame throwing starter or a possible closer with no closing experience?
If I am toronto I look at it like I am trading one of the best starters in the game for 1b, maybe closer and CF. I would say no also.
That is why it would have been better to keep him starting until you are going to call him up.
@Evan. Any chance of getting or at least talking to Pittsburgh about Zach Duke?
What’s the biggest reason the Rangers have improved so much this year? Pitching and Defense. With the same pitchers mostly. The biggest key has been the D going from Worst to 4th best this year. That (and Mike Maddux) gave the staff confidence early in the year, things went well despite Rudy’s horrible offense, and things snowballed. A young team gained supreme confidence and we are RIGHT THERE!
Now with losing Byrd (love the guy, but hate Hicks, so we cant pay him…he deserves a big deal too) we HAVE TO keep the defense at least at the same level if not improve it next year to be in the race.
Therefore, do not trade Burbon. He is the leadoff hitter this lineup has been missing. He is the CF we have been looking for to man the huge OF at TBiA. He is the Elvis of next year. Do not trade him.
I want Halladay. The Jays have no leverage anymore. They dont want to trade in division. If I’m JD I call JP and say “look at history….you dont want to be stuck with Doc next year and get pennies on the dollar for him like ATL did with Tex when you can get so much more right now with us. I’ll make you a good deal” Then you offer:
- Holland or Feliz (offer Feliz but accept Holland if they insist)
- Teagarden (replacement for Barajas)
- Any OF in the system other than Borbon…Moreland?
- Their choice of Arias/Vallejo/Lemon. They want a replacement for Scutaro for next year.
- Another highly regarded P prospect in the lower levels of the Font/Pinmental/Murphy/Castillo ilk. No Perez. No Wieland. No Ross. Pretty much anyone else below AA.
For this package, you want Halladay and Jason Frasor (about to turn 32 next week) you want them to pay for some or all of Halladays remaining $ this year. We can afford to pay both these contracts after all the expiring deals this summer.
Who says no? The Jays certainly will initially…but come 24 hours from now, with things getting tight, will they still pass up their best chance to get the best return on Halladay? Let’s find out…
My fear is that they trade for Halladay and then change direction to a win now mode. Please stick to the plan.
@rob m isn’t this the plan? gather as much young talent as you can. a deep farm system. when you have a winning team and need to add 1 or 2 veteran pieces to the team to get over the hump, you can trade away the prospects where you are deep in their position.
I’m not saying the Rangers should make a crazy trade, but I think they would be stupid not to consider all the possibilities.
“Boston could trump a deal headed by Derek Holland and Justin Smoak with an offer of Clay Buchholz and Lars Anderson.”
Disagree. A top 10 hitter + a top 25 pitcher >> a top 10 pitcher + a guy who won’t crack the top 100 next year.
Go get Victor Martinez and play him at DH/1B/C. Martinez is owed $7 million next year and with Blalock and Padilla coming off the books that is very affordable (I would hope).
1. Kinsler 2B
2. MY 3B
3. VMart C
4. Cruz DH/RF
5. Hamilton RF/DH
6. Bryd CF
7. Blalock 1B
8. Murphy LF
9. Andrus SS
And then next year!
1. Borbon CF
2. MY 3B
3. Kinsler 2B
4. VMart C
5. Hamilton RF/DH
6. Cruz LF/DH
7. Davis 1B
8. Smoak DH (Murphy 4th OF/DH)
9. Andrus SS
@MJH
Padilla currently ranks as a Type A free Agent. If the Jays are so interested in rebuilding, can you shed some light on why they would not take him back as the salary offset piece in a deal for Halladay? They pay him for 2 months and net 2 premium picks. So the haul for hallady would be 4 prospect and 2 premium picks… sounds like a win win to me?
Any ideas?
@iHART
If Padilla is a Type A, what if we offer arbitration and he accepts
Where do we go from there? That also could be a reason Toronto wouldn’t want him…
And the Canadian Govt might not allow Toronto to acquire Padilla b/c Pig flu.
Bobby V. and Jason O. have it right!!!!!
