@iHART

If Padilla is a Type A, what if we offer arbitration and he accepts

Where do we go from there? That also could be a reason Toronto wouldn't want him...

@MJH

Padilla currently ranks as a Type A free Agent. If the Jays are so interested in rebuilding, can you shed some light on why they would not take him back as the salary offset piece in a deal for Halladay? They pay him for 2 months and net 2 premium picks. So the haul for hallady would be 4 prospect and 2 premium picks... sounds like a win win to me?

Any ideas?

Go get Victor Martinez and play him at DH/1B/C. Martinez is owed $7 million next year and with Blalock and Padilla coming off the books that is very affordable (I would hope).

"Boston could trump a deal headed by Derek Holland and Justin Smoak with an offer of Clay Buchholz and Lars Anderson."

Disagree. A top 10 hitter + a top 25 pitcher >> a top 10 pitcher + a guy who won't crack the top 100 next year.

@rob m isn't this the plan? gather as much young talent as you can. a deep farm system. when you have a winning team and need to add 1 or 2 veteran pieces to the team to get over the hump, you can trade away the prospects where you are deep in their position.

I'm not saying the Rangers should make a crazy trade, but I think they would be stupid not to consider all the possibilities.

My fear is that they trade for Halladay and then change direction to a win now mode. Please stick to the plan.

What's the biggest reason the Rangers have improved so much this year? Pitching and Defense. With the same pitchers mostly. The biggest key has been the D going from Worst to 4th best this year. That (and Mike Maddux) gave the staff confidence early in the year, things went well despite Rudy's horrible offense, and things snowballed. A young team gained supreme confidence and we are RIGHT THERE!

Now with losing Byrd (love the guy, but hate Hicks, so we cant pay him...he deserves a big deal too) we HAVE TO keep the defense at least at the same level if not improve it next year to be in the race.

Therefore, do not trade Burbon. He is the leadoff hitter this lineup has been missing. He is the CF we have been looking for to man the huge OF at TBiA. He is the Elvis of next year. Do not trade him.

I want Halladay. The Jays have no leverage anymore. They dont want to trade in division. If I'm JD I call JP and say "look at history....you dont want to be stuck with Doc next year and get pennies on the dollar for him like ATL did with Tex when you can get so much more right now with us. I'll make you a good deal" Then you offer:

- Holland or Feliz (offer Feliz but accept Holland if they insist)
- Teagarden (replacement for Barajas)
- Any OF in the system other than Borbon...Moreland?
- Their choice of Arias/Vallejo/Lemon. They want a replacement for Scutaro for next year.
- Another highly regarded P prospect in the lower levels of the Font/Pinmental/Murphy/Castillo ilk. No Perez. No Wieland. No Ross. Pretty much anyone else below AA.

For this package, you want Halladay and Jason Frasor (about to turn 32 next week) you want them to pay for some or all of Halladays remaining $ this year. We can afford to pay both these contracts after all the expiring deals this summer.

Who says no? The Jays certainly will initially...but come 24 hours from now, with things getting tight, will they still pass up their best chance to get the best return on Halladay? Let's find out...
