Are Angels Landing Roy Halladay?

The Angels made some strange roster moves earlier in the day and now comes the OC Register blog item, citing ESPN’s Jayson Stark, that the Angels were very close at the deadline to pulling off a Roy Halladay deal. I had heard the possibility existed of Los Angeles dealing Joe Saunders and set of young players for Halladay or possibly expanding the trade to include some other Toronto parts earlier this week.

UPDATE, 3:27: Many commentors saying ESPN now reporting that Halladay to Angels DID NOT HAPPEN. Reporting that there were some last-minute talks, but no action. That is also what is indicated on the OC Register site.

What a disaster. I cannot envision a package the Angels could offer that Texas couldn’t have beaten easily, without giving up Holland.

Joe Saunders + is terrible, terrible return. His peripherals last season suggested he was due for a major regression and sure enough he has been a bad pitcher this year. Brandon Wood is talented but has been an absolute bust. Unless the Angels include two of Jared Weaver, Mike Napoli, or Erick Aybar, I don’t see how we couldnt beat that offer with Smoak+Feliz.

If that is the best Ricciardi got for Halladay, he deserves to be fired. If LA gets Halladay without giving up two of Aybar, Napoli, and Weaver, then we can forget about the playoffs for the next two seasons.

    So here’s a question….

I will say up front that I have no problem keeping Holland.

However, would you have traded Holland to get Halladay if that meant keeping him out of LA?

Unreal if true. Don’t you HAVE to trade Holland for Halladay just to keep Halladay from LAAAAAAAA? Now we get to play against him for the next 6 years (you know they will resign him now, whereas before, there was not as good a chance). So our rotation the next few years will be Holland, Feldman, Hunter, Harrison, and ???? vs Halladay, Lackey, Weaver, Santana, and ??? ADVANTAGE: LAAAAAAAA.

Stark is now reporting that the Angels did not get Halladay. They talked about it last minute, but never worked out a deal. Whew.

Buster and peter are now saying Halladay staying put…whew!!!

That being said, it would have been nice for SOMETHING to have been done. Nick Johnson, Willingham, D. Davis, anything to help.

    Great minds think alike, Fu.

Local weather stations in the DFW area are reporting a sudden gust of wind as Rangers fans everywhere let out a collective sigh of relief.

Something can still be done… Just a little tougher through waivers.

    Great minds panic alike too.

I don’t mind a deal not getting done, but Halladay NOT going to the Angels is huge! Exhaling now…

@Fu: you don’t trade holland to keep him from LAAAAA because that’ll only work for a year. what do you have to show for the trade if they sign halladay as a FA?

I’m on record saying good job Rangers, there was much more risk making a trade than not making a trade. Halladay will be less costly in the offseason and one starting pitcher, no matter how dominant, will not make the difference in this team going to the playoff’s this year. Deals made against the clock are rarely good for the buyers.
