Nothing….nothing at all…wow. Bet the Rangers locker room feels terrific right now. Contend for the first time in a decade, and you can’t even get a RH pinch hitter to help you out.
Wow.
09 is the Year@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:09 pm
As long as the Angels didn’t get Halladay or Bell then we are ok.
And don’t count out a Doug Davis type getting through waivers and ended up here in early August.
LET’S GO RANGERS!

We can get a bat in august thru waivers

@ Evan
Now that it is all over, what is the “real” scoop? How close we were to getting an Ace?
Auditor@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:13 pm
YES!
Bobby in Bryan@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:13 pm
That’s OK. The Rangers are still in an evaluation stage with so many of their young players. Next year, we should have a much better idea of who are the ‘extra’ players we are willing to trade.
Thanks for all the updates, Evan, and thanks to everyone else for the great conversation as the deadline approached. Now it’s time to PLAY BALL again–GO RANGERS!

Evan,
Loving the blog! The Holland will-he-or-won’t-he-go-for-Halladay drama (not a peep heard on TV last night, at least while I was watching) is a prime example.

ESPN reporting Blue Jays – Angels working to fininsh a trade that will send Halladay to LA from Saunders and three other guys. Way to go Rangers!

Halladay to Angels. Everyone still breathing ok?

I’m disappointed we didn’t get a bat… Nick Johnson went to the Marlins AND the nats picked up his salary. What was our comp to the prospect that the Marlins gave up?

As the old saying goes, sometimes the best deal a team can make is not to make a deal at all.

When October rolls around and we are left out of the picture, I hope everybody remembers Derek’s performance last night. When he goes out on Tuesday and gives up 6 runs through 2 and 1/3 innings, think how much of a difference Halladay would have made.
Ehren@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:20 pm
i’m breathing just fine.
Ehren@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:23 pm
probably no difference at all when trying to make the playoffs considering he’ll only play 1 out of every 5 games. now if he pitches every game then you make the deal.
Terry@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Kudos to JD for not blinking in this high stakes poker game. He stayed the course, which is the right thing. Don’t panic and sell everything for one shot. Keep building and be consistently good.

Jason Stark of ESPN is saying there was late conversation between the Angels and Jays, but nothing was done. Sounds like a good day!
Auditor@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Halladay would be a difference-maker. There aren’t many of those out there. Why make a trade just to make a trade? If we get another starting pitcher, Holland would move to the ‘pen. Do you want to do that now? Our offense is starting to come around. If our guys hit at their average level for the rest of the year, the offense is fine. Why give up prospects if it isn’t going to make a significant difference?
Brian@ July 31st, 2009 at 3:40 pm
How many years in a row do you play for next year before you are the Pittsburgh Pirates? Why would the only team in baseball history who has never won a playoff series pass up on a chance to get the Ace everyone in Dallas/Ft Worth has been crying about for 9 years? So we can play for next year and hope these guys are good? Help is better than hope every day of the season. The Rangers gave up. Plain and simple. If you are really that confident that when Smoak and Feliz make the bigs the Rangers will be contenders then you are kidding yourself, and I have 30 years of Ranger hisory to back that up. The window was open, the chance was there. They balked. So go the Rangers; just like every other miserable year.
Tom B@ July 31st, 2009 at 4:08 pm
@Brian, We’ll get back to you with a rasberry come October but, of course, by then you will have changed your name to perrenial winner ‘Ranger Homer.’ There is still a lot that can go wrong but it could also with Halladay. The well is deep with fresh talent that is just looking to develop and be given a chance with the Rangers. Some will fall short but some will surprise us, pleasantly. Cinch it up tight boys, This may be more than a 8 second ride.

I’m actually a little disappointed we didn’t make a play for Peavy as well, considering the loose change the Padres got in return.
Rob@ July 31st, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Seems to me like the Rangers were too focued on one guy and missed on opportunities on pitchers that might not be future hall of famers but could help this year and next and would not cost more than one top prospect. Peavy? Lee? Zach Duke??
The Beer Guy@ July 31st, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Who knows what was going on behind the scenes Rob. The media doesn’t (or can’t) report everything, short of being a fly on the wall…
The Beer Guy@ July 31st, 2009 at 6:25 pm
BTW, Peavy also has a no-trade clause, and I am 99% confident that he would NOT have come to Texas. TR Sullivan reporting that in fact Halladay vetoed coming here too.
