FINAL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Total
Rangers 0 1 2 0 1 1 0 0 0 5
A’s 2 0 2 1 0 2 0 0 x 7

7:02: Here’s your traffic update: Don’t get off the highway in Oakland, even if someone tells you about some great burger chain (and they have pie – Pie, Jerry!), if the ramps are under construction. It leads to lots of detours, wrong turns and a 90-minute adventure in the dark of night. And with that, we present the home run pool.

7:06: Also, updating for those who haven’t been following all day. I suggest INF Joaquin Arias is a riddle wrapped in an enigma. The Rangers decide there is no riddle, he just can’t help the team. So they call in a German.

8:04: The Big Bust Theory; why the Rangers have struggled in spacious stadiums where fly balls don’t fly out of the park.

8:57: Some brief notes for you: RHP Kevin Millwood through another session of live batting practice today, his last hurdle before returning to the rotation. Millwood pronounced himself ready to go for Saturday’s start at Los Angeles. … RHP Brandon McCarthy (stress fracture, right scapula) followed Millwood to the mound. He was then cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday. McCarthy said he expects to make at least four appearances in the minors before returning, but still hopes to be back on the active roster before September 1. … Manager Ron Washington is hopeful Nelson Cruz will be able to return to the lineup by Saturday. Cruz (sprained left ankle) was not available Wednesday for the second consecutive game. If Cruz isn’t ready by the weekend, the Rangers may have to consider sending him to the DL. As it is, the only backup outfielder on the roster is just called-up Esteban German. German is an infielder by nature, but can play the outfield in a pinch.

9:14: Michael Young extends hitting streak to 12 games, longest by a Ranger this season.

9:18: In the 22 seasons that Stats, Inc. has compiled stats, only seven teams (from a total of 656) have had ground ball/fly ball percentages of less than 1:1. Three of them were Rangers teams of the last decade (2003-05). This team entered the game 29th in the majors this season at 1.01 grounders to fly balls, ahead of only Boston. The Rangers had three fly balls in the first and no grounders.

9:27: Well, and there you go. Padilla plunks Kurt Suzuki, ending stretch of eight starts without an HBP. Start the pool: Which Ranger gets it in retaliation?

9:36: Josh Hamilton delivers first extra-base hit since being dropped in the lineup. A well-struck double up the alley in left center.

9:51: Here’s my thing: You want to retaliate, retaliate. That’s cool, man. First batter of the next inning or the first right-handed batter (easier target than lefties) or if the same guy in the opponent’s lineup is coming up, I’ll even give you that. But in my opinion, my opinion only, it’s downright cowardly to wait until the opponent’s franchise player is up a full inning later and with a 3-and-1 count.  Michael Young, of course, understands the whole drama and just goes to first base after being hit. But he shouldn’t have been the guy to wear a baseball. It should have been somebody in the second. If the A’s pass on that opporunity, they shouldn’t be able to hold it.

10:00: There is ground to be gained in both the AL West (Angels lost at Chicago) and Wild Card (Red Sox lost at Tampa Bay) races. If the Rangers lose, however, they will fall into a virtual tie with Tampa Bay behind Boston.

10:23: Cliff Pennington hits first major league homer. The frustrated Padilla is bound to come out at any minute, hit another batter, earn a suspension and so forth.

10:34: We are having air guitar contest on field to “Panama.” Really? Isn’t there better Van Halen for air guitar competition?

11:02: A reminder that Neftali Feliz isn’t going to provide all the answers. Last time out, he overmatched Adam Kennedy, the first batter he ever faced in the majors. Tonight, Kennedy slams 1-and-0 pitch for go-ahead two-run homer. The pitch was 97 mph. But if it’s straight, professional hitters will track it and make contact.

11:34: Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi does a commercial for Carl’s Jr. hamburgers that runs on TV out here. It makes me think a lot of things, but not one of them has to do with eating a hamburger.  I won’t say anything more.

Dang, Evan, you took a 90 minute detour at night in Oakland?!? Guess you are glad you opted for the bullet-proof glass upgrade at the car rental place, huh?

  • IrishP1

In celebration of Spider goin down and German going up, I’ll speak not in my native tongue when I say….

Laisse vont des Gendarmes à cheval!

  • Evan Grant

@badspellr: I told my co-pilots to never lose sight of the highway. We could always see it, we just couldn’t get on it. We’re adventurers!

  • DC

Evan did you ever get a chance to ask about the difference in break between left and right hand pitchers?

  • tett

It seems that Wash is now just being stubborn in his refusal to move Andrus to the top of the order. The idea that he will suddenly stop hitting the ball or getting on base just because he bats lead off is ridiculous. And the idea that the leadoff position is not that important because “the leadoff hitter only leads off one inning” is also ridiculous. It’s simple mathematics that the leadoff hitter gets more plate appearances over the long term than the 9th hitter. Not saying Andrus would be the best leadoff option on this club… Young and Murphy would both be better options, but it’s getting really old seeing Wash hold the leadoff spot for Kinsler, when it is apparent that he is horribly miscast in the leadoff role.

    There, I feel better now.

  • IrishP1

Good pregame viewing for ya: Americas Game doc on the 71 Boys on nfl right now.

  • alan

is it to early to say that today is a must win not only for the season but for the teams mindset

  • alan

    2 to 1 white sox bot 5th rays 5 red sox 3 top 7th

  • IrishP1

Level of importance? Yeah, its high. I wouldn’t say its a do or die just yet, but its very close to that.

  • scooper

    @alan: thanks for the updates!

  • alan

yw scooper if they lose we win tonight? 3.5 division 2 in wild card

  • Me

    Hey peeps!

  • Fox

    Hello everyone. Lets go Rangers!

  • alan

okay I do wonder this with our team now hitting .254 with 841 strikeouts and .315 ops and 159 homeruns

  • alan

    5 to 1 white sox bottom 6th

  • Last of the Romohicans

In an ideal world, we’d win the WC…. just because I think we could beat the Angels in the ALCS… I have trouble thinking the Rangers navigate NYY then Boston in the playoffs.

Though that would make them the heroes of Amercia…. Time Men of the Year candidates.

  • tett

Just something to keep in mind before we get too discouraged: if we can come back to split this series, that will improve our road record to 24-25… good baseball teams go .500 on the road! If we drop one or both of these, however, a little panic may be appropriate.

  • IrishP1

Maybe Sportsmen of the Year. Men of the year? Nah. Let’s get this thing going. I got my Cowboy viewing out of the way, now its time for some beisbol….

  • IrishP1

Anyone wanna start a vamp topic between innings? Favorite Ranger foe? Favorite Ranger BB card? Suggestions?

  • Last of the Romohicans

    Favorite non-Baseball Texas Ranger?

    I start, I got Walker.

  • IrishP1

I like TAG’s tie. Too bad it really doesn’t match his suit.

  • alan

okay I do wonder this with our team now hitting .254 with 841 strikeouts and .315 ops and 159 homeruns
I now realize that we are not going to replace the hitting coach now matter what. If this were in other team in the nhl nba nfl whatever and the team continued to struggle in a part of their game day after day that coach in that certain team would evuntally lose their job no matter how long they were there. If it is not Rudys fault then is it the players fault or the organizations fault for bringing in the type of players we have. I hope that they realize leading the league in homeruns in not going to ever get us anywhere. If the oranization does not realize that our approach to hitting is a complete and utter loss then we will never get any further than we have inm the past I guess I compare this to the Mavericks who played the up and down no defense game and got nowhere and then they finally got it hey we half to play defense to actually win a championship. I guess my ultimate? is what does it take to realize that they way we are doing things is wrong someday explain it to me if it it not the coaches fault?

  • IrishP1

Haha Romo. I meant Texas Rangers nemesis on the field, ala Vlad the Impaler….

  • obagain

All the negative junk is over, lets start a long winning streak.

  • alan

    rays 6 to 4 bottom 8th

  • badspellr

@Last You would think that would be tough, but I give you Cardinals over Tigers in whatever year that was. October is something of a crapshoot. Just get there and be hot/healthy when you do. Also, give me The Lone.

  • IrishP1

Good lord, badspellr. If you’re gonna go there, I’m goin with the Lone Rangers from the movie Airheads. Pow!!!!

  • obagain

visquel down 0-2 but still making him work.

  • Ryans Dad

I have to say, Red Arnold LOTR. He pulled a gun on my dad’s buddy after he caught them night fishin on somebody’s ranch. Or so the story goes.

  • IrishP1

I thought Chad Pennington played for the Dolphins….

  • badspellr

I doubt very seriously its the approach. Its the players. Which one of these guys has ever been a high OBP guy or patient hitter. Hamilton and Kinsler have really underachieved, but that is not a philosophy issue. Bradley played under Rudy last year and led the league in walks. He left Rudy and leads the NL in “what the hell happened to you.” Rudy has a long, long, track record of teams that score more than anybody figured they would. Show a little faith.

  • Me

    @P1 how about Chone Figgins.

  • Ehren

    evening all!!!!

  • Ryans Dad

So what your saying badspellr is that Rudy is really good at teaching great hitters?

  • IrishP1

Vlad more than Chone, easily. But yeah, he’s got some skins. Here’s a random one for ya: Matt Stairs. He kills us.

  • scooper

    Hey, Ehren!

  • Ryans Dad

    Howdy Ehren

  • Last of the Romohicans

@badspellr – I think you hit it on the head… Rudy wasnt’ an OBP genius for working with Milton Bradley last year.

  • IrishP1

Heeeeeeeeeeeyyyyy yoooooouuuuuu guuuuuuuuysss! Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

  • scooper

@evan: it says a lot about the offense that 12 games is the longest hitting streak this year.

  • obagain

rudy has helped some bad hitters also.
Think the angels would like a do over on the mattews jr. deal?

  • IrishP1

Even if the Rangers lead the league in homers, I bet they lead in flyball outs as well…

  • Fox

Also as has been mentioned before when you are getting blown out (like the Rangers in years past) you often get cheap runs by facing the other teams worse pitchers. (Or in the case of Aroid your SS buddies tip pitches). This year the pitching staff has keep every game close so the rangers are facing nothing but the best of the opposing team. The hitting approach is bad but this had been a contributing factor.

  • badspellr

Rudy is not a power genus either.

  • Me

@P1 I like/hate Figgins because he not only can he hit, once he gets on base he causes all kinds of problems.

  • alan

    rays win 6 to 4

  • Ryans Dad

If you give credit for those who hit well here and gone on to be duds elsewhere, then the inverse is true also. If Hammy came over hitting out of his mind, then after a year and a half of Rudy his production should have increased. Also, under your reasoning if A.Rod was unbelievable here he should have fallen off the map in NY.

  • IrishP1

Rays win. Let’s go White Sox…

  • IrishP1

Does Teabag have the arm to get Davis? I think not.

  • alan

I just once want to hear all the cowboys sheep say that when say the defense has a bad year and hear everyone say well its not wades fault man you know the moment the season ended everyone incuding me would be calling for his head and rightfully so.

  • obagain

ryans dad, arod kills me but he is a great hitter, he will hit anywhere he plays.

  • IrishP1

I rest my case. Thanks tbag.

  • alan

wow this is great little league baseball we are playing

  • IrishP1

    Let the horrors begin….

  • obagain

Why are we giving this guy extra bases?

  • IrishP1

Ballgame? Anyone? I’m gonna throw up.

  • scooper

at least the extra bases didn’t matter!

  • obagain

irish, look on the bright side, we could get to see feliz again tonight.

  • Fred

How ugly was that? Padilla doesn’r hold him on; TT bounces a throw; Padilla throws away a pick off and then loses focus and grooves one

  • Win's Dad

My favorite non-playing Ranger is Clayton Moore.

  • Ryans Dad

F it, at least let’s see a good fight

  • Fred

Ah–Padilla is back to his old self. Melt down

  • obagain

    oh=no.
Looks like young will get plunked.

  • IrishP1

Tip your hat, Padilla! He’ll charge you if you don’t!!!

  • alan

well maybe a brawl will liven up this team hec a pennant race sure isnt

  • scooper

    Becca? Are you there?

  • badspellr

All I’m saying 1. Rudy has had a long record of producing teams that score more than expected and 2. Rudy like most high level teachers/coaches does not remake players to be one way. All his players have followed their career profile as far as power and patience. He gets no credit for fixing them or blame for breaking them in my book. 3. This team has underachieved offensively, not because of approach, but beacuse its two best hitters have sucked. Have they done so on Rudy’s watch? No question. I just point to number 1. 4. There does not exist a coach who will make Michael Young or Marlon Byrd or any of the others into OBP machines. They are what they are and were that way before they got here.

  • Fred

I read the ball park anaysis, but they just hit one out?????

  • alan

irish p1 is that pow what you are doing like the drop on the ticket and that is from step brothers correct

  • IrishP1

Is this another Padilla give upper? I think it just might.

  • alan

young or hamilton i take young

  • Fred

Padilla looks like a commercial for Tres Flores Brilliantine

  • Chuck

On the bright side, if they hit one of our guys at least someone will get on base…

  • IrishP1

Yes alan, congrats. I just like POw. Oh look! ANOTHER FLY BALL OUT. Thanks, Rudy.

  • alan

    6 to 1 white sox top 9th

  • obagain

chuck, young will be on base anyway so they might as well make a statement.

  • Ryans Dad

Badspellr, would you say the same about Maddox?

  • alan

chuck i love your analysis you are dead on

  • Chuck

    good point…

  • IrishP1

Is anyone clever enough to find out the Rangers win % since the emergence of BS Guy? Just wondering if he is our billy goat? I hate him, can ya tell?

  • badspellr

Course. Maddox is on record as saying he doesn’t believe in teaching one way two success. His philosophy isn’t as a power approach or a control approach or any such thing. He is all about conviction.

  • Fred

    Nice job, Hammy

  • IrishP1

Anyone wanna call Hambone gettin tossed out at 3rd? Wash is crazy enough to send him.

  • alan

here is my ? for tonight can we get to 850 strikeouts for the season tonight my guess bec yeah

  • badspellr

Lol Irish, I emerged as a fan of this team in ’86. Maybe the win% since then is my fault.

  • Fox

It is incorrect to think that Rudy is above being replaced. He has amassed a track record that means that he will be given time to fix things before he is replaced and this is the way that it should be. It is like any coach that has shown years of success and then has one bad year. To compare him to previous rangers pitching coaches that have zero history of sucess is not a good comp. But if the offense does not fix itself (most likely next season) management will have to consider a change and most likely will.

  • Ryans Dad

So you would give no credit to Maddox “fixing” the pitching staff? It’s the same cast of characters as last year.

  • obagain

    that is a good sign.

  • WacoGreg

    Damn good at bat TT.

  • IrishP1

BS Guy’s real name should be Unibrow Guy. Nice hit, Teabag, now throw someone out.

  • Fred

I’m surprised, but happy, TT. Good job

  • Last of the Romohicans

    @badspellr re: 928

I agree with you,and had a very long discussion of that today.

  • obagain

Maddox is the mvp, he has this group pitching very well.

  • IrishP1

Badspeller, I meant batting stance guy, not you. You’re solid.

  • alan

one run tonight have we met our quoata for the game lets hope not

  • Ryans Dad

I’m not going to say that it’s Rudy’s fault for the plate strategy simply because I don’t know if that’s in his job description. I would like to know who sits with these players and breaks down opposing pitchers with these guys.

  • badspellr

Well, I would say that what looks like improved pitching is mostly improved defense and the rest is vastly upgraded bullpen membership and health.

  • badspellr

    Thank you sir.

  • IrishP1

+/- on hit batsmen tonight? Anyone?

  • Last of the Romohicans

Maddux v Rudy….. there’s time for a pitcher to think, time for a hitter to react… one is much more mental than the other.

  • Ryans Dad

I’m guessing Irish is an Aggie

  • Fox

@Irish: 3. A fight would be nice. Pow Pow.

  • IrishP1

@Ryans: So what you’re saying is Rudy is more like Hank Haney and not Steve Williams? Yes?

  • Ryans Dad

LOTR, one has to be successful 75% of the time and one 30% too be considered great

  • LT

    Angels lose again

  • IrishP1

    Ryans: Class of 01. Whoop!

  • obagain

Now lets score 3 this inning.

  • Fred

Looks like a longer nite than I’m ready to do–and I’ve got an hour on most of ya’ll. You can count on Padilla for that!

  • Jack Daddy

predicting a loss. another night to get a good night sleep. plus, I do not enjoy watching padilla pitch. his pace is agonizing (though not bad tonight) and he just won’t be here when things matter (I know, I know, I shouldn’t be throwing in the towel on this season, but I’m sorry, this offense isn’t a playoff caliber offense).

  • Ryans Dad

    Not saying Irish, asking

  • Fred

    Ryan’s Dad & Irish arguing=young and younger

  • Ryans Dad

And Irish, you can barely even notice it (being an aggie)

  • Evan Grant

@Fred, Jack Daddy: You guys gotta stay with us here a little. Giving up after two complete? That’s not like you. Though I’ll admit, Padilla is agonizing to watch with runners on base.

  • Fred

    BG-my fears too

  • becca

On an iPhone tonight but just wanted to say I heart padilla and it’s good to see my boy’s back! And i’m sorry Omar, Elvis or my will get hit. But it feels like all is back right with the world

  • obagain

    I knew that was coming.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    there’s a shock! thanks vicente.

  • Chuck

    Good call obagain…

  • Ryans Dad

Sorry I’m not really old and have a five year plan Fred. POW!

  • WacoGreg

    That bs was so obvious.

  • Jack Daddy

    @irishp1 – class of 93 (I think – I feel like i’m 60).

why would they retaliate by putting on the tying run?

  • IrishP1

And the double warning has been thrown down! LET THE LOUD SCREAMING SWORDFIGHT BEGIN!!!!

  • Fred

Padilla’s giggling about MY getting hit. Teammates love him!

  • obagain

    Nice cheap HR.

  • WacoGreg

    Wake up Jack Daddy!

  • Kush

    Solid player

  • Jack Daddy

i like david murphy. I don’t get why all the seamheads hate him. oh wait a second, yeah I do — they don’t understand what their eyes are seeing.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Jack: I thought they should have hit Josh last inning with 2 out and nobody on.

  • Ehren

frickin internet has gone haywire on me! good to go now.

  • becca

    Murf rocks it

  • WacoGreg

excuse my ignorance, but what is a seamhead?

  • badspellr

The half-hearted “excuse me, I’m supposed to hit you now, okay?” is such silliness. Retaliate or don’t. And on another note, its one more reason that I can’t wait to see Padilla go. He starts all this. Umps should just toss him on the first one a few times. See if that helps him stop.

  • Horns_Rule

I know you guys hate to admit it, but Padilla might have actually WOKEN UP the Rangers bats!!!! Something needed to be done and it’s worked so far.

  • badspellr

    <—Seamhead

  • Fox

It looks like a great way to help the rangers get on base is have padilla hit someone.

  • Jack Daddy

@wacogreg – still here!! pow, pow

was a dumb move to retaliate right there. its not like this is the last time we’re going to see these guys and it was the 9th inning. you don’t hit a guy to put the tying run on.

  • Ehren

    @Jack: very nicely put.

  • Evan Grant

    ON SOAPBOX:

9:51: Here’s my thing: You want to retaliate, retaliate. That’s cool, man. First batter of the next inning or the first right-handed batter (easier target than lefties) or if the same guy in the opponent’s lineup is coming up, I’ll even give you that. If the A’s pass on that opporunity, they shouldn’t be able to hold it.

  • badspellr

Greg, a seamhead is a baseball fanatic.

  • Fred

@Evan-watching Padilla is like watching Manatees mat.e
Also, his reverting to norm on HBP is disgusting.
Plus, children playing in the street, here.
Beer Guy and I might have to go down the street for a cold one.
    At least there’s Murph!
    But I don’t think that’ll be enuf

  • obagain

Evan, under normal circumstances I agree with you but because of padilla’s rep the a’s are going to make the best player pay.
I see the a’s side, they have to make sure padilla doesnt bean 2-3 more.
You dont think young is not going to give padilla the stare when he gets back in the dugout?

  • Ehren

@Wacogreg: a seam head is a fanatic and who frequently utilizes statistical analysis and urges others to do the same. such as the UZR/150

  • Jack Daddy

@wacogreg – i’m not really using it right. it techically just means a hardcore baseball fan (which i pretty much fall directy into that category). but it has derived into a word to describe the sabr geeks that blindly argue statistcal anaylsis over traditional baseball “rules”.

think keith oberman, money ball, adam morris :)

  • IrishP1

<- uber seamhead. I bleed white and red. Kind of like a Cincinatti Bow-Tie. Pow! Pow!

  • RAT

Why don’t we just plunk Davis in the knee or something next time he’s up?

  • obagain

tt has to be better than that.

  • RAT

    Whaaaaaaaaaat?! Davis was out.

  • Ryans Dad

Ok, Teagarden is having another awful night

  • WacoGreg

@badspellr- Thanks never heard that, not sure if I qualify but:
I like murph though, in fact I love me some OBP and guess who is second behind MY?

How the hell was he safe?

  • RAT

    sigh…

  • becca

I don’t know if it was mike Maddox inspired or not but I’m not sure i’m in favor of the Teagarden soulpatch. But that’s just me

  • IrishP1

Conradulations, Teabag. You just pissed off a lot of us Ranger fans.

  • Phi

What is it again that everyone loves about TT again?

  • Fred

OOPS. there goes TT the 2009 sieve again, with another PB. What’s happened to our good glove, no hit kid? Just cost us another run. Gotta address this issue. Not a grat play on the runner, either.

  • WacoGreg

@all- Ah well that makes sense. Still, money ball/OBP go together like PB&J right?

  • john in clearwater

Question for virtual team – Your team is in a pennant race. Why call up your second best infielder? German has shown throughout the season he is better than Arias. I don’t understand why you wait two games to DFA Bannister (who has a 98% chance of not being claimed). Makes me wonder what more important to Daniels. Protecting players of the 40 man roster or winning baseball games in a pennant race. I’m a big fan of JD, but that was a head scratcher for me.

  • Jack Daddy

not a great inning for TT. I for one find him overrated. I’m chalking up his popularity to all the t-sippers living here that are Rangers Fans. I personally wouldn’t take his defense over Salty. Now, I’ll admit it could be due to some rust, but salty is better at blocking balls in dirt RIGHT NOW, imo. That tag was weak.

  • RAT

I was going to lose it if Padilla walked Cust.

  • IrishP1

Remember when the Rangers had the Best depth at the Catcher position? Wasn’t it 2008? Pow!

  • scooper

    german wasn’t on the 40

  • Horns_Rule

To all you Saltalamacchia fans, compare the two catcher’s batting averages with Runners in scoring position and you’ll be surprised to know that TT’s average is almost .100 points higher

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I gotta admit that I find that funny. Padilla is a dirtbag and that has to feel great for suzuki.

  • RAT

    Great!

We take the lead and give it right back up… I’ve seen this before.

  • IrishP1

Oaklands best offensive threat? Padilla. Good gawd almighty….

  • Fred

Padilla’s back to normal in the impossible to hit one out park

  • bertie

losing to the a’s sure makes the glass look half empty

  • badspellr

For what it is worth, seamhead has been around much longer than Bill James, and if there is a connection, its a new one. I always thought of seamhead as a generic term for someone with baseball on the brain.

The Murphy dislike from certain corners is that he has never put up either the minor league numbers nor does he posses the scouty tools to justify the playing time he has gotten. That said, the dude keeps making it hard to take him out of the lineup and has been that way for quite a while now, so I think you are starting to see some retreat from the Math people.

  • becca

iPhones are smarter than me. Will have to enjoy game without all of you guys. Ef technology

  • Phi

Ah, the shut down inning…a concept that is completely foreign to Rangers pitchers.

Thanks for providing great Veteran leadership Mr. Padilla.

  • WacoGreg

Also to the TT haters, remember how good Salty looked behind the plate last year. Give him some time. Granted Salty was transitioning from first but TT hasn’t been playing much lately at all.

  • RAT

    Another full count…

  • Evan Grant

@Horns_Rule: In fairness, it’s a much smaller sample size for Teagarden. Salty has 54 at-bats; Teagarden 31.

  • IrishP1

Is Max Ramirez REALLY that banged up? I thought he was amazing in his brief run here last year.

  • WacoGreg

Gameday is showing the looping curve ball at 56mph out of the hand and 50 at the plate, is that about normal? I thought it was usually in the 60′s at least.

  • Buck

Plunkage and poor pitching … our old pal Padilla. I liked the new Vince better than the old. Whatz up w/ Padilla 2nite?

  • tett

Anybody else get the feeling that 8, 9, and 1 in the order is gonna have to come through for us tonight? Because I don’t see it happening with 5-7, and I think Oakland is going to pitch carefully to 2 and 3 the rest of the night

  • Phi

And like clockwork, here come the UT fans to defend one of their own.

He was so bad on the PB and the tag that they must resort to attacking Salty.

As if we’ll somehow forget those plays.

  • IrishP1

Anybody here sit next to or near Zonk? Was it as annoying as the drummers in Oakland?

  • badspellr

M-Ram wishes he was having as good a year as Hamilton and Kinsler. Regretably, he isn’t.

  • RAT

Hey, look at that… it’s a full count.

  • bertie

    padilla is taking FOREVER

  • badspellr

    Zonk = Greatness

  • RAT

    Padilla = human rain delay.

  • IrishP1

That bad, BS? Had’nt kept track of him that much this year.

  • Jack Daddy

@badspellr – your first paragraph is accurate – see my explanation. admitted the same thing.

i think the biggest issue on murphy is a insistence by some that he can’t hit lefties. well 2 things: if he isn’t given the chance, he won’t. secondly, all he’s done in 2+ years here, at the major league level, is hit.

  • Buck

    It’s hook time. I’ve seen enough ….

  • obagain

irish, I have sat by him several times and he was never a problem, great guy to talk to at games also.

  • RAT

I say we release Padilla on the spot.

  • Phi

Time to put Padilla on waivers again?

  • Ryans Dad

Do you know how happy the A’s would have been if that hit Padilla in the head

  • Horns_Rule

@Phi…Like Salty was so good last year when he was playing as much as TT right? Come on dude, if you’re going to compare the two, at least try to pretend like you could be fair and knowledgeable enough to know that there’s NO WAY you can compare the a starter’s performance to a backups…

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I predict Padilla gets tired of getting hit around and plunks another guy just to get his night overwith.

  • WacoGreg

@Phi- I missed the PB but the tag looked like he bobbled the ball a bit. Completely his fault on a good throw, but if he looked slow to get the tag down keep in mind you have to catch the ball before you tag the guy out.

And yes I am a UT fan, but I like have enjoyed watching Salty work behind the plate this year.
Not so much when he is positioned in the batter’s box.

  • Ehren

Is Zonk still at the games?

  • Fred

@Evan-agree on retaliation. Stupid and cowardly. Not gonna make friends.
@Jack-Not sure it;s Seamheads (Evan’s DMN followers) vs. Murph, but his friends at LSB vs Murph, and MY, too.
Prolly cause most of them spent a lot more time with a sliiderule in their hands than a bat or glove.

  • IrishP1

I’m not saying I hate Zonk. I’m just glad I didn’t sit near him. Plus he wasn’t as constant with the drum as these oak guys.

  • badspellr

Max Ram at OKC .238 Avg, .308 OBP (hey, better than Hank!), 3 Homers in 208 AB (not so much)

  • Fox

Late start time for West coast games + Padilla pitching = rough day at work. We may be here till 2am.

  • bertie

@Horns_Rule: did you not just compare a starter’s performance to a backup’s by comparing salty’s BA w/ RISP with TT’s? am i missing something here?

  • Jack Daddy

last thing i’ll say on TT – it seems that everytime i see a scout’s take on him is that he’ll be a nice ml backup and that’s his ceiling. yet, you get a much higher ceiling on Salty. to me, and i’m no scout of the catcher position, it sounds an awful lot like the aikman/buerlein debate back in the day.

i can’t explain salty’s tail-off this year at the plate — wait, i forgot that we still had the same hitting coach. never mind. i can explain it.

  • Fred

@Clearwater-suspect it was because Aria had ML experience and hit well in his call up, last year. Looks like they quickly figured out it was a bad move

  • IrishP1

@UT- Teabag just defended his case hitting into a DP. Pow!

  • Horns_Rule

@bertie:You obviously are…You probably were never a catcher, but as a former college catcher, I can tell you that it kills your performance on the field when you don’t catch every day. It’s easier to hit and keep your timing then it is to be as sharp on your defensive skills. I also made the point about hitting because it goes to show that even for a backup who doesn’t play as much as HE SHOULD, he still is more clutch with RISP than Salty

  • Phi

Let’s see, the book on TT is that he’s an above-average backstop, average hitter and great leader.

So far, he’s none of those things.

To me, it’s another, typical over-hyping of a UT athlete.

  • scooper

@Fred: and German wasn’t on the 40-man roster

  • bertie

ps I don’t know why any pitcher would still throw Hammy a first pitch strike

  • IrishP1

Hey look! Another fly ball out! Stop swining for the fences. Thanks, Rudy.

  • badspellr

Jack, I think we are on the same page. If the Ranger’s had better, they probably wouln’t have given Murphy the chance, but as it has worked out, I think they are glad they did. Murphy has proved his value. Still, I love Murphy as a fourth outfielder 200-400 AB guy and think he is no more than adequate in a bigger role than that. Next year, I’d love to see a free agent CF or else Burbon if the club really thinks he is the answer, and Murphy as 4

  • Horns_Rule

@IrishP1: I’ll defend that as well as I expect you to defend Salty’s .200 average and 200 STRIKEOUT PACE… That’s something I’m ready to hear an explanation for

  • bertie

@Horns: I don’t claim to be catcher, but my point remains. You said you can’t compare the performance of backup with that of a starter and that’s exactly what you’re doing with RISP

  • RAT

This is a delightful game to watch.

  • obagain

How many HR is he going to give up before wash pulls him?

  • Phi

    Un-believable.

Seriously, did Monday’s loss completely take the wind out of this team’s sails?

  • becca

I really don’t understand all the padilla hate. First of all who else do they have this season. Second he’s been the most solid starter. Yes he hits a guy or two. But um we have no one else. Fight through it. I mean sheesh he won’t be here next year!

  • IrishP1

Get Feliz warmed up, please? This is about to get ugly….

  • bertie

dangit go back to the dolphins

  • WacoGreg

@horns_rule- I was with you on the debate but please don’t resort to this…”You probably were never a catcher, but as a former college catcher” Puulease, you may have been a former college catcher but there is no need to use it front your argument on an online message board. Give us all a break and use logic please, not your resume.

  • IrishP1

OMG, we got Davis out! Give Padilla an extension. Pow!

  • obagain

becca, he has been the most solid starter? Seriously?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Waco: As a former member of a debate team I find this funny.

  • Buck

Perhaps Padilla some spend some on the DL to fix that ailment between the ears.

It was time for the hook two innings ago.

We should be all over the A’s pitcher. AAA stats didn’t look impressive and he’s a righty.

  • IrishP1

Evan or anyone for that matter- what’s our longest losing streak this season?

  • badspellr

TT and Salty have been our best catching situation since Pudge was here. Offensively they are about as good as the average catching situation out there and defensively they don’t get enough credit for the teams improvement. They have been a huge part of how much better we have been on defense. I’d love to have Mauer, McCann, or that kid in Baltimore, but there are like five teams who have guys who can really hit at catcher and twenty five who don’t.

  • WacoGreg

@PTRF- Not sure if you are laughing with me or at me, no matter as long as you are entertained.

  • Chuck

Irish, is your real name Antoine Walker by any chance?

  • Ryans Dad

    6 Games I think

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @Waco: Deginitely with you.

  • Horns_Rule

@WacoGreg: Dude, unlike most of the people on here who never even played the game, I’m giving you stats and facts, not just fantasy baseball geeks terms from extremely unathletic people who just want to sit on their little computers and criticize players without intimate knowledge of the game

  • Evan Grant

    @IrishP1: Five.

  • Jack Daddy

here is a good example of why you can’t JUST look at the stats: Andruw Jones. his ops is .874 and rates him the 3rd best Rangers hitter this year. Really? I’ve watched just about every inning of this season. He does not belong on this team as anything but a pinch hitter.

Now stats can be helpful – when you look at the top 40 OPS in the AL, there is a strong correlation between quality and the ranking, but it’s not absolute. And some of these stats don’t take into account situation hitting. A HR down 5-0 doesn’t help your team if you were 0-3 the first 3 times up with men on base, but you’ll have an slugging % of a 1000.

You have to watch the games AND look at the stats. And let’s remember that RBIs and Runs, while dependent on other players, ultimately measure the single biggest factor in this game – putting lights on the scoreboard. and a hit is not ALWAYS as good as a walk. so while jones has a decent obp, his avg has been a killer.

  • becca

Well top 3 starters. Since there are only 3 from opening day roster still starting. That’s still something, right?

  • IrishP1

Antoine Walker, former Maverick great? Uh, no. But I hate him if that helps.

  • obagain

horns rule, are we supposed to bow down now or are you still giving us youe wisdom?

  • scooper

@Horns: c’mon, now! you are making a lot of assumptions. can’t we just have a good conversation without attacking each other? Thanks!

  • Fred

@scoop-you don’t know how good it is to hear from you. I was about outta here. Of course, you’re right about the 40. They paid dearly for those judgments.

  • tett

    Murphy is locked in fellas

  • RAT

    Yay Murphy.

  • badspellr

If having played the game made for insight, Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver would be good announcers and Eric Nadel and Mark Holtz would not.

  • bertie

@jack daddy: thought about making that argument to mr. beane?

  • Evan Grant

@Horns_Rule: I gotta tell ya, I don’t think your argument has been terribly convincing and I’m a guy who thought Taylor should have entered the season as this team’s catcher. Salty is a better defensive catcher right now by a significant amount. I’m not sure if Taylor’s back has been more of a problem than he’s let on or if he’s been paired with wilder pitchers, but Salty certainly looks more mobile behind the plate. Salty really deserves a lot of credit for how much he has improved his defensive abilities.

  • obagain

becca, I can go with that.:)

  • Phi

    Way to go Murph!

  • The Beer Guy

    Way to go Murph!

    Hey folks, ‘sup?

  • WacoGreg

@ Horns- What do you consider intimate knowledge?

For that matter how do you know who has or has not played the game?

Should we all post are incredibly impressive baseball pedigrees?

I am happy for you, you were lucky enough to play the game we ALL love. Please don’t try to make it seem that just because you got one, or two, or three levels above anyone else playing the game that you are any more qualified to casually talk baseball like the rest of us.

  • IrishP1

@ bs – lmao. Great comparison! Joe Morgan is the Lou Holtz of baseball when comes to announcing.

  • Fred

@badspller-I’ll take any Laird year where he hit over .270 vs. those 2. Fans hated him, but he had close to a 40% CS, could run, bunt and was a decent receiver. Hope one of the kids develops beyond that. For a duo, I’ll take Baeejas and Laid, any day

  • badspellr
  • The Beer Guy

Am I the only person in North America who likes Joe Morgan as an announcer? Probably!

  • Texas_Rocks

Anyone else tired of the TV Broad cast? I have to listen to the game on the radio with the TV sound off

  • Chuck

Just messing with you Irish because your posts are like Antoine’s shot selection: high volume! :-) Again, I kid…

    Nice shot Murph!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I’ll start the resume posts: I play t-ball with my 3 yr old in the backyard. Am I qualified enough?

  • bertie

the thing is, Lou Holtz is at least funny (unintentionally for the most part, but what’s wrong with unintentional comedy?). nobody is laughing with morgan

  • IrishP1

    1500 TOOB SOCKS! 11 BUCKS?! I love that commercial…

  • becca

Thanks obi won. Thought we were gonna have to fight. And I’ve often said thank god forMY but wow add murf to that!

  • obagain

evan, have you heard anything about McCarthy?
Is he close to starting a rehab or is the year lost for him?

  • Jack Daddy

i second the let’s keep things civil. TT doesn’t suck. and i’m not on him b/c he’s a teasipper – it’s not like the Ags have any great shakes in the big leagues. and I’ll buy somewhat the theory that not playing often has affected him. but like evan said, it’s not been close.

irish p1 is just bitter because when he was at school you guys tarred his Ags. I’m a bit more level headed because when I was there I had the joyful experience of the Ags pretty much treating the Horns like Ned Beatty in Deliverance. I’m mean, we just beat the snot out of you guys. I mean a$$ whippings. :)

  • Phil

I may not be a Big Leaguer, but I play one on TV.

  • WacoGreg

After 21 years, and almost 40 million posts (we’ll have to check those numbers, but it’s something like that), we have decided to bring FJM(Fire Joe Morgan) to an end.

    Guess they are giving up.

  • Texas_Rocks

Anyone else tired of the TV Broad cast? I have to listen to the game on the radio with the TV sound off

  • IrishP1

I once saw The Sandlot in theatres. Does that also count? Pow!

  • Fox

Evan – I played football in college so if you need a new cowboy writer Im available

  • Ryans Dad

I have noticed that recently this website has been regressing into name calling and bullying. If you have a point, make it. Being 97 years old does not make your opinion better than anyone elses, nor does the number of games you played back in the day. Some people obviously spend more time than others thinking about baseball and that’s cool. If someone has a different opinion than you, debate them and keep an open mind. If you can’t do that, then just blog about something else.

  • badspellr

Fred, its hard for me to argue with you there. Lair and Beslowjas were better hitters, but they were a long way from being good hitters. Better, but not good. I think the current duo more than make it up with D, but the biggest Sabermetric types will tell you that nobody really know how to measure defense at catcher yet. Scouts will tell you that these are better than those we had. Better enough to make up for the hitting? Hard to say for sure.

  • obagain

Becca, sorry, sometimes I get very competitive in debates. :)

  • Fred

@Jack-agree totally with you on AJ. Love his HR, but why is he here? Sosa all over again. Rather see Borbon or Boggs learning. Plus, everybody talks about his OBP–he clogs the bases when he walks, a double play in the making!

  • Jack Daddy

@bertie – if i had beane’s job, the A’s would have a ws title in the last 15 years.

I definitely should be the gm of a baseball team, if not the owner. From a financial standpoint, I was born unlucky and married stupid. But I do have a hot wife.

  • Chuck

    @obagain, from TR:

Brandon McCarthy is headed for Triple A Oklahoma City. McCarthy, who has been sidelined since June 9 with a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade, will begin a medical rehabilitation assignment on Saturday against Sacramento. He is scheduled to pitch 2-3 innings and it’s the first of at least four outings for him with the RedHawks.

“We’re certainly going to get him built up,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “We don’t want him back up here pitching on a pitch-count. We’ll go rehab start by rehab start and see where it goes.”

  • IrishP1

I’m not bitter. We have a winning recod against Cart, er, Colt McCoy. Pow pow!!!

  • The Beer Guy

    lol @ Jack

  • Jack Daddy

I was awesome at RBI Baseball on the Nintendo, and on the tabletop version at the Pizza Hut on the corner of Samuell Blv and Jim Miller Rd.

  • Texas_Rocks

I’m really tired of seeing all of these guys up here striking out or swinging for the fences. The Angels score tons of runs because they get guys on base and start running all over the place. Borbon needs to be here and if German is as fast as they claim he is, then he needs to play as well…

  • The Beer Guy

As an Arkansas fan, I miss those days when we used to beat you Texas guys :P (Well, ok maybe we didn’t always win, but those SWC days were fun)

  • Evan Grant

@Chuck, OBagain: You guys aren’t reading this very entry:

  • Phil

Tough night for Blalock…pop out that would be a souvenir anywhere else and three feet from taking it out of the park.

  • badspellr

Texas_Rocks, I’m radio 80% of the time. The TV guys are fine, but too much about themselves and not enough baseball.

  • Texas_Rocks

Anyone else thinks Hamilton needs to bat 3rd again???

  • IrishP1

@ryans: you know why this happening, it’s the losing streak and it IS a streak. Bad things like this bring out the worst in people. The A’s are begging us to win this game, btw.

  • RAT

Hey, another first pitch swing from Hamilton! I want to know how many pitches he’s seen in tonight’s game.

  • Evan Grant

@Jack_Daddy: And I rocked on APBA dice/card game. Led the 1970 Braves to an 88-win season. Pretty big improvement over their actual record. I was a managerial genius.

  • tett

I think Hammy and Cruz have a mutual man crush

  • Jack Daddy

this is silly. we’re hitting this guy like a pinata. we would have 8 HRs if this were being played in TBiA.

  • obagain

Sorry evan, I dont scroll all the way to the top, I am watching so many things and following this chat.

  • Evan Grant

@RAT: He’s got two well-struck balls and that fly out. Remember, last year when he crushed the ball? He was not a patient hitter then, either. With Hamilton, it’s more about getting his swing straightened out than his approach. He’s going to be aggressive and swing at some pitches he shouldn’t, but if he fixes his swing, he can be plenty productive.

  • Texas_Rocks

@RAt…Josh has never really been a patient hitter. He did the same last year but because of his excellent timing, he put up those great numbers. I could live with the impatience as long as he gets his timing back and I believe tonight is a good sign that he might be almost there

  • tett

@Evan- do you agree with Newberg? To quote his tweet: “If Josh isn’t “back,” he’s damn close.”

  • Chuck

Sorry Evan! The bad thing is I DID read it but had just seen TR’s in another tab whilst between refreshes here… My bad!

  • Jack Daddy

@Fred – missed you last night. Salty COULD NOT get the ball back to Holland. 1 actually did get away. You’re the only one talking about it, but I’m afraid we’re THIS close to having a bona fide case of the YIPs on us. This could get ugly. There is without question something developing.

  • The Beer Guy

Agreed. This ballpark is horrendous, with its stupidly wide foul ground and other assorted Oakland-ish badness.

Too bad the whole damn thing wasn’t demolished after 1989…

  • badspellr

@Evan, I have the same issue as obagain. Have you thought about making all your top line posts also appear in chat? Is there a button for that? Can’t tell you how often I miss your notes for 20 minutes or more.

  • WacoGreg

I like the A’s pitcher saying FUUUUUUU in the the rapid rewind, nice touch guys.

  • Evan Grant

@OB: You are always forgiven here, but we just want to remind you we are out pounding the pavement (or the infield dirt) to find you notes and nuggets.

  • Fox

Newberg just declared Josh back over Twitter. Thoughts?

  • Texas_Rocks

Over and Under ….the number of more runs Padilla gives up before Washington pulls him???? i say two…

  • badspellr

Juan Gonzalez won 2 MVP awards and in those seasons season I believe he took a total of 8 pitches. (I don’t have the stats in front of me, so it may be 9 or 10.)

  • Fred

Badspller-Actually, I think Salty gas gad a remarkable improvement with the mitt, and CS, this year Vry disappointed with his bat, tho.
Tt, on the other hand, has hit sporadicaaly, but been vey scary behind the plate. So my comment was as much D oriented as O.

  • The Beer Guy

    @Evan: Chicken McNuggets?

  • bertie

somebody remind me why padilla is still in the game

  • scooper

    a feliz sighting!

  • WacoGreg

@badspellr- I gotta say that is absolutely incorrect, he ALWAYS took the first pitch….now after that first pitch you are probably right though.

  • obagain

Evan, I always go back and read them, I wish you could find a way to put them in the chat, even if it is a cut and paste.

  • Phil

Think the offense will be happy if Padilla gives up a run immediately after they tie it up?

  • Chuck

Can Neftali come close to repeating his debut?

  • Jack Daddy

@tett – he called MY’s turnaround, about 1 week too soon.

    Jamey knows his shiat muslim.

Speaking of coming out of a slump and getting in a groove — was there ever a Ranger that was more obvious when he was about to get locked in and streak than Juan Gone? When he was “on” it didn’t matter who was pitching. He would carry you. Let’s hope Josh has that in him.

Good gawd – Padilla is just serving up meatballs. Mathis time?

  • Evan Grant

    @tett: I don’t use naughty language!

These are the best struck balls he’s had in more than a week. I hate to jump the gun. How many teams did it seem like Davis was about to break out of the slump? Only to fall back into bad habits. I think you’ll know when Josh is “right.” He’ll pile up extra-base hits for three or four days in a row. Almost like you can’t get him out.

@Badspellr: I think there are ways to open the blog in two windows so that you can have the commentary on one window and the chat on the other. Once the game starts, I try to put a couple of “important” posts in the body of the chat to remind folks that there is commentary up top, too.

I know, I know. We need to find a more efficient method.

  • WacoGreg

Padilla needs to get the hook now, before we give up this game.

  • Ryans Dad

This team hasn’t been the same since Feliz left the mound Monday night, maybe his return will reverse this slide

  • Buck

Padilla doesn’t have it tonight and he’s not in the right frame of mind to grind it out. Pull him …please.

I know this will wear down the pen, but I do think we need to win this game.

  • tett

@bertie because the bullpen doesn’t need to get completely burned out right at the beginning of this roadtrip… holland only went 4.1 last night, a few of those guys could use the night off. Also, before we all kick padilla, let’s keep in mind that he’s still out there gutting it out, and we’re still very much in this game. It’s a precarious situation though, we might not be by the time I click “submit comment”

  • badspellr

Yeah, thought Salty would hit more and TT would catch better. Still, I tend to give them a lot of the credit for the improvement in team D. I had hoped we’d be better there too. Still think its pretty good though, and young enough to get better from both.

  • The Beer Guy

Dear Lord, we really have to win this game. If we get swept by the pathetic 46-60 Oakland A’s, in the middle of a division race, in August…oy vey.

  • Ryans Dad

This is a 4 game series right?

  • Phil

Girl looked real happy to be sitting next to horn-guy.

  • badspellr

Thanks for the tip Evan. I’ll try it.

  • IrishP1

More annoying: drums @ A’s games or horns at South American futbol games? You be the judge….

  • Jack Daddy

@buck – this is a big one. the fact he’s still in there tells you how depleted the pen is. what’s weird is he’s throwing very hard. usually when padilla doesnt have “it” and has his meltdown, its because his fb is sitting at 88-91.

  • WacoGreg

@tett- We are still very much in this game, but it is no thanks to Padilla. 5 runs in 5 1/3 innings…wanna work out that era for me?

  • Evan Grant

@Ehren: News McNuggets. They taste better and are less filling.

  • Jack Daddy

best pitch of the night. sit down!

  • bertie

@tett: fair enough, but it’s hard watching him throw meatball after meatball…

  • Evan Grant

@IrishP1: Most annoying is kettle drum man in Cleveland.

  • badspellr

  • IrishP1

You know him, you love him….
    El Rrrrrrrrrrrrapido!!!!!

  • tett

@Waco I agree this is by no means a stellar performance by Padilla. But he didn’t give up like he might have before the Rangers put him on waivers. I’m no VP apologist, and I definitely think that letting him go after this year, but I’m also not opposed to giving the guy a modicum of credit- he gave at least 2/3 of an inning more than his stuff indicated he had tonight.

  • badspellr

    Thats it, cut him.

  • Jack Daddy

    pow

  • obagain

That is why they call them rookies.

  • Phil

    Or, don’t bring the heat…lol.

Oh well, live by the sword, die by it.

  • bertie

    right down the middle

  • IrishP1

Um, yeah, er, um. Can I get a mulligan here?

  • Phil

    That’s it for me.

    Nite all.

  • obagain

He knows he made a mistake, now lets get the lead right here.

  • Fred

@Evan-someday we have to share a beer. I lived for that Feb dat when the broen package of APBA cards would arrive. Would Maris get the unheard of 3 “!”‘s? Would Koufax get an “A”, “X”, “Z”? Would Clete get the coveted “6″ fielding?
    We are bonded!!
By the way, on a lower level, welcome to MLB, Neftali

  • The Beer Guy

    …..

  • Texas_Rocks

I know the kid gave up the run but I hope they throw him right back out there. You have to take your lumps in order to be great and once he figures it out, the kid will be great

  • IrishP1

I think I might have jinxed him. My bad….

  • Jack Daddy

note to Rangers scouting report on Oakland A’s, date stamp 8/6/09: Adam Kennedy can turn on the fastball.

  • badspellr

Meh, rookies, maybe. I’d just as soon take my chances with talented rookies as crafty vets. No promises either way.

  • Evan Grant

11:02: A reminder that Neftali Perez isn’t going to provide all the answers. Last time out, he overmatched Adam Kennedy, the first batter he ever faced in the majors. Tonight, Kennedy slams 1-and-0 pitch for go-ahead two-run homer. The pitch was 97 mph. But if it’s straight, professional hitters will track it and make contact.

  • obagain

with rookies they can get better, with vets you know what you are getting.

  • Evan Grant

@Beer Guy: Sorry about that. Don’t know why I got you mixed up with Ehren. I prefer to think the nuggets are made from Turducken

  • badspellr

Neftali Perez is not the answer. 100% agree with you there.

  • IrishP1

Who is Elvis’s backup? Omar? Just curious.

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: Unless said professional hitters have Texas uniforms on, in which case they stand a better than even chance at striking out.

  • Buck

That N. Perez guy keeps popping up everywhere. What team does he play for?

  • Jack Daddy

Translation of Evan’s 11:02 post, into Jack Daddy speak?

This season is about getting our ducks in a row for 2010.

2009-2012 – most wins in baseball and 2 world series appearances. guaranteed. unless rudy isn’t fired, in which case, 0 playoffs and a .500 record. :)

  • WacoGreg

@tett- I can agree with that, I have always rooted for Padilla…I like his fire, and could understand his frustrations in the past. This team needs him however and he still isn’t showing up consistently like we need him to.

  • badspellr

    lol

  • The Beer Guy

Uhhh, did Josh just say “si-LA-bul” for syllable?

  • Texas_Rocks

@The Beer Guy….Only 8 out of our 9 hitters give him a better cance, MY kills FBs

  • Jack Daddy

this is where mvps tend to be valuable.

  • IrishP1

    I smell extra innings….

  • cameron

You didn’t really call him Neftali Perez did you?

  • Evan Grant

@Fred: I’ve been to the APBA site about a half-dozen times and come within a click of ordering the dice version of the game again. But I just know if I do, my lonely life will get even lonelier. Saturday nights playing APBA, reliving some season from 20 years ago. I would be a sad site.

  • scooper

    @evan: Feliz

  • The Beer Guy

@WacoGreg: Which is precisely why we don’t need him anymore after this year!

  • IrishP1

Murph? Anyone wanna make the call here?

  • badspellr

Padilla is also now the heroic public face of swine flu. So there is that.

  • Ryans Dad

Good grief, what a Cracker Jack box of a stadium

  • Texas_Rocks

Wow… That freaking pop up is thirty rows in EVERY stadium except that Toilet of an excuse for a baseball stadium

  • Jack Daddy

that’s it – this is the second stupidist stadium in sports, second only to the whiffle ball park behind centerfield in the BallPark.

    going to bed. probably.

  • IrishP1

Seriously? Are you effing kidding? I’ll go ahead and say it, the A’s have the best HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE in the majors. Geebus!!!!

  • obagain

evan, see, thats what happens when you wernt a catcher in collage.

  • WacoGreg

    PSA: Flu season 09/10

Padilla can’t even beat the Oakland A’s but he did beat the Swine Flu, and so can you!

  • Evan Grant

@All: I knew it would happen. I just was hoping for a later time period. I see Neftali Feliz, I think Neifi Perez. I’m a dummy.

  • Buck

I have to give Padilla some credit, he did gut out his last 1.2. The last K was nice.

Not sure i would have put Feliz in that situation – just yet. Wash was thinking he’d get a quick K and get out of the inning. I guess rook’s have to have OTJT (but I’d rather it not be tonight).

    Live and learn…

  • Jack Daddy

we lose 3 in a row in Oak, blowing a 2 run lead in the 9th in one and allowing 4 HRs in another. screw me.

  • Fred

@ Evan- I even went back and bought the 1927 YANKEES, THE 1933 PHILLIES (OR WAS IT A’S), ETC.

  • IrishP1

I think Mr. Rhyner might have been right in saying the Rangers really are playing with house money this season.

  • The Beer Guy

    lol @ WacoGreg, nice one

  • badspellr

I wouldn’t call playing in front of dozens, make that tens of dozens, of fans an advantage. Besides they foul out into it too. The victims aren’t the road teams, its the fans of that franchise who deserve better. One of the worst places to watch a game left. Maybe the worst after the blow up that horrible ballon in Minnesota.

  • Jack Daddy

A’s Stadium + Barry Zito Contract = Brian Sabean is a stupid man.

  • The Beer Guy

God love him, but does anyone else think Josh might have had to wear a harness when he was a kid?

  • The Beer Guy

    (Lewin, that is, not Hamilton)

  • Fred

@BG- Yips are aconcern, but, as an old HS coach, it just drives me crazy to see him working the pitcher that way.
By the way, that was an expected mental error on Elvis, the rookie. Thank God, ther have been so few.

  • obagain

Now, if the rangers dont score do you let feliz pitch another inning?

  • badspellr

Oakland hitters one for five with 2K and 0BB off Perez/Feliz. No excuses for the HR, but it was hardly a meltdown.

  • IrishP1

PSA for swine flu: Hi, I’m Vincente Padilla of the Texas Rangers. Last year, swine flu teed off on me, but I got even. Please get your yearly shots and bean swine flu in the side, gut, or head. Thank you.

  • obagain

Ment if they do score to tie, its late.

  • Jack Daddy

There is a very decent chance that all of us are sitting around on October 5th, rocking back and forth in a dark room, mumbling “that F$$@#@!! Adam Kennedy” over and over again. As he could single-handedly cost us 2 games in this chase.

  • WacoGreg

haha I like Irish’s version better than mine

  • Remdog

    I don’t think so….I’m betting O’Day comes in.

  • Evan Grant

This would be a nice moment for Hamilton to prove Newberg correct.

  • Jack Daddy

here is where a 3 man bench is killing us. would love to pinch run for that water buffalo.

  • obagain

Could we see the power return right here?

  • WacoGreg

    come on hambone

  • The Beer Guy

haha Irish! How about this one: “Hi, I’m Vicente Padilla. Get your tamiflu shots this year and put swine flu on waivers. It worked for me, and so did the tamiflu!”

  • badspellr

    Lol Irish. Funny stuff.

  • Fred

@Ryan’s Daddy- Just caught up with your rant. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers. It’s not about age, it’s about maturity and it’s not really about if you ever played, it’s about if you understand the basics of the game. Many who never did, do. Absolutely no reason you shouldn’t comment. I will read them with interest, I apologize if I hit a sore spot.

  • WacoGreg

@ Jack Daddy- Why don’t they then? You can put in anyone to DH the rest of this game, if they do get an at bat we will all be happy right?

  • Ryans Dad

Ya’ll know that Jones has 5 SB’s this year. Same as Byrd and Hamilton?

  • Evan Grant

Or he could get called out on strikes. Either way.

  • scooper

…I thought Ryans Dad was ranting at that Horns dude.

  • Ryans Dad

Not sore, just arrogance gets old. No hard feelings here. By the way, I understand the fundamentals of baseball very well.

  • IrishP1

Tamiflu got Padilla tossed out of the game of life and death. It can do the same for you. Pow!

  • Ryans Dad

Didn’t really want to single anyone out. Just dislike all of it.

  • scooper

@ryansdad: how many were on the backend of double steals? The times I’ve seen him run lately, he looks awfully slow!

  • The Beer Guy

Ugh, this sucks. If we had taken care of business against Oakland (as we should have done), we’d be 2.5 behind LA after tonight :(

  • IrishP1

And we have a fan on the field. Its Tazer time!!!!!

  • Fred

@Ryan’s dad-peace across the generations. Just hard for a guy who spent most of his life making a living in the game to
listen, sometimes. Gotta adjust to the audience, Love having your son’s name in your username. Wish I could have coached him.
    Peace, son,

  • The Beer Guy

Swine flu to Padilla: “Don’t taze me bro!”

  • Ryans Dad

True that SB’s aren’t a perfect barometer of speed, but 5 means he isn’t loafin out there.

  • Ryans Dad

He’s got a little way to go still, will be 1 this month. And yes, he is named after the greatest “Ryan” to ever walk the planet.

  • IrishP1

Down goes Fraizer! Down goes Fraizer! Down goes Fraizer!

  • WacoGreg

@Ryans Dad if you are referring at all to my part in that little tift I am sorry if it seemed like I was attacking anyone. However I saw bs and I call em how I see em. Let’s be honest. Freedom of speech is alive and well on the internet, and I reserve my right to defend fellow baseball lovers regardless of their service time in the bigs.

  • Evan Grant

I propose public tasering of idiots who run on the field. Lock ‘em up, attach taser, broadcast to stadium. I’m a mean man.

@Fred and Ryan’s Dad: We all good? You guys are both too smart and too engaging to get into a brouhaha.

  • obagain

ryans dad, to me it makes jones worse, that means he has the speed, he just doesnt use it unless he really needs to.
All the trotting to 1st and letting fly balls fall in could have been avoided but he just didnt want to.

  • badspellr

Padilla PSA: I never wanted to talk to the media before I caught Swine Flu. Then all of a sudden, they didn’t want to talk to me. Don’t wind up with nobody to talk to, get your shots.

  • Remdog

One of them had excellent speed though, could be a bag stealer.

  • IrishP1

    Ryan Oniel? Pow!

  • The Beer Guy

Didn’t they used to show people who ran onto the field back in the day? Is there any evidence to back up the rationale that showing them only encourages them to do it? I wonder if on-to-the-field runners are fewer since they decided to not show them on TV…somehow I doubt it.

  • Ryans Dad

All good. Just want everyone to be happy and a little smarter for visiting Mr. Grant’s website.

  • scooper

@evan: I’m with you on the use of the taser – just put a bag over their head first, so they don’t get their 15 seconds of fame!

  • WacoGreg

    @Beer Guy –
I was just thinking the same thing, you would assume seeing the guy getting clotheslined would be a deterrent.

  • obagain

beer guy, it seems like there is more fans on the field this year,

  • Ryans Dad

    No Irish, Seacrest obviously, hahaha

  • IrishP1

And badspellr wins the Padilla swine flu psa contest tonight…. Job well done.

  • Remdog

I think you are right beer guy…. don’t want to give them any tv time. I doubt they are thinking that when they decide to jump the wall. I like the public tazing idea of Evan’s.

  • Fox

This is where we miss not having a good PH

  • Me

@Evan I agree and can provide the taser.

  • Ryans Dad

And ewwwww, too soon buddy, still to soon.

  • badspellr

Less now than then their used to be, I’m pretty sure. But I don’t know if it was the TV policy that did it or not. Seems like after the Monica Seles stabbing it got much rarer and stayed that way. Not funny anymore, you know.

  • scooper

@beerguy: it seems to me like the incidents are less frequent, but I have no stats to back that up.

  • jb

dont worry. in the age of youtube and cell phone vid cams, i’m sure someone caught this epic dash across the field

  • Evan Grant

@All: We’re just going to keep it here for a while before going to the post-game show. These three games have given me a sinking feeling about where this season is headed. Two opportunities to pick up games in the playoff races. A blown ninth-inning lead. Just a bad mix of events that leave me wondering ….

  • WacoGreg

Nice hanging with you all tonight, hopefully next time I am around it will be a win.
    GNight!

  • Clinton V.

The series opener will turn out to be this season’s catastrophic moment.

    gg

  • scooper

@badspellr: that is a very good point. also, security is tighter now and the punishment is more severe. I believe in the “old days” they just got kicked out of the stadium. Now, they are arrested.

  • IrishP1

Welcome to your worst nightmare, Ron Washington. Are you still in cahoots with the A’s? Are you throwing these games? Say it aint so, joe!

  • badspellr

Well, 4 and a half at this point is do-able. The problem is that it can become 9 just as fast as it can get to even. And 9 = toast. Need to pick it up.

  • The Beer Guy

Wow, I mean just wow. We get swept by Oakland. Clinton V, I am inclined to agree with you. I think we’ll know for sure by Sunday. If we don’t at least win 2 of 3 in LA, pack ‘er up.

  • obagain

As depressing as this series has been we are still in the race with games against the angels coming up.
If we can win tomorrow and take 2-3 from the angels we are still in good shape.

  • bertie

    ugh

  • scooper

@beerguy: we are not swept yet! One more game tomorrow.

  • Ryans Dad

It’s never over until it’s over. Many, many, many more games to be played. Last two losses have not lost ground to either the divsion leader or the wildcard. Heads up, we go to war again tomorrow!

  • badspellr

Yeah scooper, Morgana the Kissing Bandit used to be a celeb of sorts, wouldn’t fly anymore.

  • The Beer Guy

Optimistically, you can think “Well, at least we didn’t lose much ground to LA/Boston.” And that’s, true, we didn’t. But at this stage in the season, when teams ahead of you lose, you have to seize that chance, particularly when you’re playing a crappy team like Oakland. They REALLY dropped the ball on this series, and there’s not much margin of error at this point.

  • obagain

beer guy, we still have 1 game in oakland, we can avoid the sweep.

  • The Beer Guy

Oh we play them again tomorrow. I forgot! Hopefully we can win back a little dignity!

  • IrishP1

Didn’t Cahill mow us down last year? Just curious. If I remember, he’s got a mean heater that we couldn’t hit.

  • Fred

@Ryan’s Dad-I’ve got 6 grandkids, 4 grown sons and hundreds/thousands probably of kids who played for me in various sports. Every week, it seems, I hear from another..after 20 years and with wives. kids, beards and tattoos.
You have no idea how much I envy your stage of life, now. It won’t be easy. Good luck.
    Peace be with you.

  • KJ

Barf! I’m a Rangers nut and this just makes me sick. I know we’re supposed to be prepping for 2010, but seeing the potential of this team not coming through is really the hardest thing to deal with right now. I know we have rookies that we have to rely on and I give them tons of slack, but guys like Padilla just have to be better. He’s got to know that we needed a game from him tonight and instead he sucks it up.

  • Fred

@Fox–by the way, just curious: where did you pay FB? I did, too, but probably before you were born.

  • Chris Hartman

Closers blowing saves in the 9th tend to have a lingering effect. Looking at the schedule, the Rangers need to survive August no more than 4 behind the Halos. This is not a good start to doing that. If we do ahng in there though, the Rangers play 12 games against teams with winning records in September while the Halos play 21. Both play a 15 home to 13 away. MLB did show the Halos some love allowing them to end with 9 at home (final three vs. Texas). Don’t jump ship yet…

  • JustSaying

tomorrow the rangers have the opportunity to officially let a AAA team sweep them and put them out of their misery for this season………..seriously? we can’t beat oakland?

  • The Beer Guy

Yeah, I had a really bad feeling about that first loss against Oakland. As I wrote here, that kind of loss has the potential to spin off into 3-4 more losses, if not more. Some say games don’t carry over, but I disagree. Now the thing to do is win today and go into LA with some small semblance of momentum (it’d be nice if we could win 37-2!)
