Story Of The Game
For the second time in three starts, LHP Derek Holland gave the Rangers a glimpse of the kind of pitcher he can be. Using fastballs early in the game and a slider/changeup combo in the middle innings, Holland got ahead of the Angels and put their hitters on the defensive. He took a no-hitter to the sixth, finished with a three-hitter and became the youngest lefty in Rangers history to ever record a shutout. He did it all in just 96 pitches, the third lowest total in a shutout by a Rangers pitcher since pitch counts were first kept as official stats in 1988. Los Angeles’ Maicer Izturis broke up the no-hitter with a solid single in the sixth, but Holland came right back to strike out Erick Aybar.

“I was really curious to see how he would do after he gave up the hit,” C Taylor Teagarden said. “I thought for a second ‘OK, let’s see if he can keep his poise.’ He did. He did everything you would want a guy to do. He just came right back and attacked Aybar.

Three Up
• CF Marlon Byrd had three hits, including a home run, three RBIs and a sliding catch on Juan Rivera’s sinking line drive to start the fifth. Byrd, who is hitting .384 (10-for-26) on this road trip, extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
• C Taylor Teagarden homered and caught his fourth shutout of the year. Teagarden had two homers and threw out the only two runners who tried to steal against him in the series. Teagarden has a 2.91 catchers ERA since entering for the arm-fatigued Jarrod Saltamacchia in the second inning Thursday at Oakland.
• The Rangers have won all four series against the Angels this season and hold a 9-3 edge in the season series with two series remaining (one in each stadium). Texas has won five straight series against the Angels dating back to last year.

Three Down
• OF Julio Borbon struck out in four of his five at-bats and has six strikeouts in 10 major league at-bats.
• The Rangers struck out nine more times to push their season to total to 884. They have returned to a 1,300-strikeout pace. They are currently on pace for 1,302.
• We didn’t have room for 2B Esteban German’s contributions in Three Ups, so that’s definitely a “Down.” German had a pair of singles, a walk and scored a run. He appeared to be right in the middle of the Rangers’ offense.

Stat O’ The Day
2.96: Composite ERA of LHP Derek Holland and RHP Tommy Hunter in their 12 starts since July 1. The Rangers are 8-4 in those games.

    Other interesting stat:
    Holland over last 3 starts”
    22 IP, 9 H, 4ER, 6 BB, 22K, 1.63 ERA

  • Doug Fu

    Like the new format.

Really like seeing that Stat O’ The Day. If those guys can continue to do that, we’ll be all right.

  • Tom B

Is it about time to ditch the “Old Timers” like Andruw Jones, Omar Vizquel and Eddie Guardado? Let some young potential stars take a swing or pitch an inning or two. We have picked up on Arias and conversely German. Feliz has been great but there are more diamonds in that Minor League rough. Let’s take a look. Is there a catcher down there other than Max Ram? This was a pitching gem. Makes the future look bright.

  • Babe

Other than Rogers perfecto, and even including it, this game was the most dominating pitching I think I can remember since Kevin Brown did something similar with 90 pitches back when he was more agreeable.

Lackey looked like the rookie in this one – he openly questioned the ump at least twice that I saw and totally lost his composure several times. Yes, his fielders let him down…tough.

  • jb

who is the youngest pitcher in ranger history to throw a complete game shutout?

  • Joe Templeton

This games takes the buzz out of the Josh story. The media outlets will go crazy on the series win after the Oakland stumble and an emphatic shutout by a 22-yr old rookie. Between this shutout and the one against Seattle that was curtailed, I will take this.

  • Ehren

Digin the new format!!! Currently at the frisco game. Beavan looks good.

  • Evan Grant

@jb: Edwin Correia was three days past his 20th birthday in 1986 when he shut out the Yankees in New York.

@Babe: Kevin Brown did indeed have a 79-pitch complete game

  • Auditor

    Like the new format…

  • Albtead

    @ Tom B

Agree on Jones and Guardado, put Vizquel has been absolutely awesome this year. Real important piece!!!

  • Lamar in PA

Also liking the new format. The more info, the better.

  • Chris Hartman

Brown’s was even more impressive considering he took a hard comebacker off his head early in the game.

  • The Beer Guy

Great win, awesome job by Holland. Still disappointed in so many strikeouts…

Question for everyone (especially Wash critics): There were a number of posts in the Depot about the lineup, as usual. I assume if we’d lost, those voices would be out in full force. So, tell me, since we won 7-0, does Wash get praise for crafting such a brilliant lineup? Or don’t we give most of the praise to the players themselves? If the latter, then why put so much blame on Wash for something like a lineup order when it’s the batters who strike out, can’t hit, etc.?

  • JustSaying

new format is nice…….3 hit shutout even better………holland definitely is ahead of my expectations for him this year……..and it makes you wonder if he can now dominate at the mlb level as he has in his last 2 of 3…………..i have to believe that the secondary pitches are his key to success………

  • fluaggie

I caught the end of the game on the radio today. Eric Nadel said something that I didn’t realize. At this time last year Holland wasn’t even at Frisco yet! Wow…my initial thought is that maybe we see Perez sooner than we think. What a phenomenal rise through the system for Holland and what a great game today!

  • Mike Gray

I can’t believe that I’m actually rooting for a Yankee win tonight. I haven’t done that since 1961.

  • Jack Daddy

    1. Kevin Brown had 23 CGs over 92 and 93
    2. He had a 4 hit shutout in the second game of the 92 season against the Ms. SS for Sea? Omar V.
    3. I remember listening to that Brown game in my bedroom at my parent’s house (summer after my freshman year of college). It was the first time, I think that I ever focused on pitch count in a game. CF in that game? Gary Pettis. Shane Mack saw FOUR pitches in 3 ABs.

  • Jack Daddy

@hartman – the shutout was against Minn at home. I thought the comebacker off head was a day game at Oak? I could be forgetting, but I definitely remember him getting hit in the head in a game and finishing it.

All things considered, he has to be the best pitcher we ever developed. Very sad it didn’t work out here. All time a$$ hole.

  • Jack Daddy

is that 31 innings without a run for the Sox? I LOVE it!!!

  • Little O

@TBG- Agree. A “brilliant” Scioscia might have just ruined the end of the season for Lackey. Can you imagine the howls if Wash had done that? We see every move by Wash and forget that he’s pretty much like every other manager. The players support him and in my book as long as they do and they win then he’s doing his job.

    @Evan – I like this format.

  • Jeffrey

@Evan love the new post-game format. you never fail to disappoint your loyal followers

  • Jeffrey

@Evan scratch that – I mean, “you never disappoint”. was trying to type too many thoughts too fast

  • Jack Daddy

BTW, while I still like Holland better than Feliz (they are only 2 prospects I’m really bullish on, because I’ve seen these 2 with my own eyes last year), I don’t think we are making NEAR enough about the split finger that Feliz is now throwing. He really mastered that in 1 month? With that pitch (in lieu of the circle change that he telegraphed by slowing arm down), I think he is a top 10 pitcher in 2 years, either as closer or starter. This is a really big deal. That pitch, ancored off the fastball, has the chance to be one of baseball’s filthiest.

  • Jack Daddy

@evan – edwin C’s injury was one of the worst things that ever happened to Texas. Remember what the Witt, Guzman and Correia were called in 86? The Kiddie Korp. Injury and Sosa (Alverez) trade are what brought TAG down. Poor guy.

  • pigskinnie

Go Evil Empire – now up 3-2 after Damon/Tex homers in bottom of 8th.

  • Gunter

@Jack I really didn’t want to be bullish on either of them, as I thought the praise from baseball people was too much….but i’ll be damned if, thus far, I can find anything about either pitcher to complain about. They both have dominating stuff and very high ceilings.

  • becca

nice format. sorry i missed all the fun this weekend. excellent work, evan and cornerians.

  • badspellr

Nice format. Really like it. If you voted wrong in this poll, you should be suspended from inside corner for at least three days.

  • badspellr

BTW, if you could still cheer for the Yankees after one crowd reaction shot, one close-up of a former Ranger, or worst of all- one sickening round of “Lets Go Yankees”… Well, if you could still find it in your heart to pull for ‘em, you are a better person than I am. Hate.

  • Dalbumo

Just wanted to say love the new format, and i really appreciate all the work it must take to put this together. I don’t post, but read daily. Here and Newberg Report are the best Ranger sites on web.

  • Tommy

2.96 ERA in 12 games by H&H, and yet the Rangers are only 8-4. If only the hitting had been ordinary for Texas, we’d be a dominant team.

  • Eric

Like the new format a lot. Three up and three down is still my favorite part, but the other categories are very cool and informative.

  • Ronald

the new format is good but is being overrated in the comments section

  • Samson

C’mon Evan, time to get with the program and start using the Derek Holland nickname, “Dutch.”

Can somebody explain to me, like I’m a 3rd grader, why Saltalamacchia is the starter over Teagarden?

btw….. For Tom B: Manny Pena. By all accounts, the best defensive catcher in our system.

  • Fred

@samson-because TT’s hitting .204 with a K every 3.5 AB, and he has lapses where he wiffs on the ball behind the plate for a PB or a very preventable WP. Very inconsistent. Of course,Satty’s only hitting .241 with almost as bad a K rate and appears to have a serious case of the yips, but he’s more consitent behind the plate. Not an ideal situation back there.

  • Buck

Does Esteban German’s mom live in Ohio?

  • torii

@tom b– why would u get rid of eddie g and vizquel when they have performed well and are important pieces of a team in the thick of the playoff hunt?

    Maybe you are just stupid?

  • Samson

@Fred- I would contend that the more playing time one gets the better they perform. At least I did back when I still played. Look at our buddy Mike Scioscia. What does he do? He plays the better defensive catcher over the better offensive one. I bet you know why. Even with the small sample size, Teag has a 42% CS% over Salt’s 24%. And their fld% is close to the same. I’m not buying into a better BA. Maybe the switch hitting, but I’ll take D over O at the catcher position everyday.
