5:46: The home run pool is open, but we ask that you put your swimming togs away before showing up here. No shirt, no shoes, no service. Hey, the Health Department does have some regulations.
6:10: Julio Borbon leads off with a walk, meaning I’ve got to take my first shot of Tequila.
6:26: Got about 40 folks out here for the first pitch. Still room to join party. Meanwhile, Tommy Hunter does a good job of showing why the Rangers consider him a mature-beyond-his-years pitcher. Two on, nobody out in the first. Escapes trouble.
6:30: It certainly appears that OF Josh Hamilton is starting to find his swing. He’s now 12-for-30 (.400) on the current road trip. But Jarrod Saltalamacchia must get the ball in the air deep enough to score when Hamilton leads off with a double and Hank Blalock moves him to third. These are steps in being a more efficient offense the Rangers are going to have to master.
6:37: Rangers won’t have to deal with Kevin Youkilis this weekend. After he sacked Rick Porcello (good tackle, but points off for tossing his helmet at the Tigers pitcher) he was suspended five games and decided to start serving that suspension immediately.
6:47: That’s two.
7:02: OK, so, question: At what point do you have a real catcher controversy on your hands? But I do remind you that Taylor Teagarden is hitting only .204.
7:46: With three shots in me – thanks a lot, Salty – I am now officially BWI (Blogging While Impaired).
7:48: Rich Hand just informed me that he has been given access to the Christy Matthewson Suite at Rangers Ballpark for Saturday’s Red Sox game. There are 16 tickets; $1,000. If interested, please email me.
8:08: Who was the last rookie starting pitcher to throw like Tommy Hunter has. He’s just been awesome.
8:12: Squeeze play works again. I can’t think of the last Rangers season with two squeezes. Greer says that during his entire time playing for Johnny Oates (1995 through May, 2001) the club attempted one squeeze. Benji Gil missed the bunt. In 1995 at Detroit. Never tried it again.
I hope y’all are having fun at Pappasito’s!
With all of these great events and the Rangers playing as well as they are, I have never missed living in Dallas more than this summer.
@evan: when Kins gets back, ask him what he thinks of Perez.
Sorry I couldn’t be there tonight, hope you all have a good time.
@evan: who all is there?
hope you kids all have fun throwing food on the ground for rusty to dive and catch. sorry i’m missing the festivities. but at least make sure the rangers win. thank you.
*rubbing his hands with anticipation*
Can’t wait to see how Hunter does tonight. And no AJOnes in the lineup? What a shame….
@Evan – when does Crush come back to Arlington? The Hammer experiment is going terribly wrong I think….
I was comparing our numbers and record to the Angels and
La 19-7 Record
.352 OBP
.288 BA
125 HR
701 SO
372 BB
4.76 ERA
34 SV
Texas
14-10
.316 OBP
.255 BA
171 HR
890 SO
324 BB
4.19 ERA
32 SV
The win loss record, the era, so,hr totals, and the ba, obp really stand out and give you a clear indication of why we are now 5.5 games behind. Isnt it funny that the team with the higher era and ba avg may actually win the division and not the team with one of the best era’s in the league. Yet year after year we have wanted good pitching and we got it and know it will the hitting that will let us down. I dont understand does anybody else.
that’s 1 shot!
At this rate, hope someone can drive Evan home.
Greetings from party everyone!!! Scooper and becca you should be here.
@Easy Eddie: I still think it’s a little while, another week or so if not September 1.
@alan – what’s the frame of reference for those stats?
14-10 with 32 saves?
@ehren: if I’d known about Evan and the tequila, I might have made the drive!
uhhh i just got them from espn i hope i added the win losses correct Iam wrong forgive me please
if sorry
but what are the win/losses from? Since ASB?
since the all star break
@scooper: he did his deed.lol.
those are it I think i added them correct if i am wrong surely somebody will correct me
@ehren: Good! Keep him honest!
Evening everyone!
I ready to proclaim that division over with and wild card is the only race to focus on know but I could be wrong
@alan: that’s pretty pessimistic! we still have a lot of games left with the Angels, and I seriously doubt that they will stay this hot for the rest of the season (if they do, they deserve to win the division!).
Didn’t see that double comin at all.
I think TT has earned the right to be catching tonight.
Hey rf! I’m on the wife’s iPhone tonight. Might be a little slow o the draw scooped. Lol
@ehren: who, of the regular cornerians, is there?
Does anyone else already have their Frisco Gameday window up anxiously awaiting Perez…
@scooper – I’m there.
Another worthless at bat by Salty. I think he’s starting to feel the pressure of TT which means he is pressing.
wait. I mean here.
RF, I have the window up waiting for kinslers first AB.
Since I wasn’t here when y’all were talking about CDavis last night, I just wanted to point out that everybody scoffed when I suggested he wouldn’t be back until September, even after his hot start in OKC.
@last: c’mon! you have to give me at least a minute to catch it!
@obagain: what’s the link for the Frisco game?
1-0 red sox hr lowell
me too scooper…is he expected to play the whole game?
Borbon can’t lay down a bunt??
@even: I didn’t think it was that good of a tackle! Porcello side-stepped and, when Youk when down, Porcello ended up on top!
I mean obagain..my bad
@Evan – thanks. I guess my only question is…. why? Can he be worse than what Blalock has done since the ASB?
@scooper: Tom b is here. Ted price is Also here. There are some others but I don’t know them.
Teagarden seems SOOO much more able to hit a fly ball when one is needed. I’m more than ready for them to swap.
Well good thing…got a double.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2009_08_12_friaax_tulaax_1
@ehren: Thanks! just curious!
@Ehren, can you confirm the shot by Evan for the leadoff walk? Not that we would not trust Evan, but wanted to see if he had any pomp and circumstance with it.
@obagain: thanks!
RF, yes, he should play the whole game.
surely we can score here cant we
giants beat dodgers in walkout home run in one of worst called games i have ever seen…..
Not a good at bat for Young…
David Murphy is really seeing the ball well these days. Don’t know why he doesn’t get more PT.
lets see how can we blow this one
and jon miller doing postgame color………what a classy franchise……
@last: were u at?
@Rangers, what the rangers bunt? That would be silly.
This was a comment today for the “against” reason for the Rangers making the playoffs:
This is too much of an all-or-nothing offense that needs to hit home runs to win. There are too many holes at the back end of the lineup to consistently wear down pitchers. The Rangers’ on-base percentage (.316) is the worst by the franchise since 1983. And until proven otherwise, the Rangers are a poor second-half team. In three of the past four seasons they took a winning record into the All-Star break and wound up with a losing season.
and a lineup that knows how to execute situational hitting and pitchers who bunt better than rangers position players…..cept of course vizquel (Duh) and andrus and sometimes murphy…….
Well well well…clutch power hit from Hammy, real good sign.
@ehren: is evan doing his 2nd shot?
@All: By the way, you can nominate candidates for the Player of the Game throughout the game on the blog. Just specify that you are nominating somebody.
great sign from Hammy
Evan, I am going out on a limb and nominating hamilton.
After that weak effort by the the Hammer I ask again, why wait on bringing Crush back?
@scooper: I treated Evan to his latest shot. Lol
oh hear comes the salty hating…
That gives hunter the ability to perform the rare 4 K inning.
That was even better.
@audito: I’ll make everything is on the up and up. Lol
Took his eye off that…good recovery
I nominate Hunter
Let’s go Perez & Kinsler!!
“Hit all they want, until they learn to pitch and play defense they’ll never make the playoffs!” Then, lots of references to “the kid GM” who’s “over his head”
That’s what we’ve heard for years. The angels can hit, but can’t field or pitch. I think the Rangers recent past is more predictive of what will happen to the Angels down the stretch than the Rangers.
7:02: OK, so, question: At what point do you have a real catcher controversy on your hands? But I do remind you that Taylor Teagarden is hitting only .204.
If Salty doesn’t start throwing better, they play TT and blame it on Salty’s “sore shoulder.”
Greer is the man!!!!!!!!
3-0 red sox hr bay
@evan (or anyone): how many shutouts has TT caught this year?
Rangers have 7 shutouts TT behind the plate one 5 of them . Thats enough for me to have him the starter.
@EvanL Don’t you think it would need to be several games in a row? He’s been real solid all year. Let’s not lose sight of that because TT (who has had a weak arm a lot of the year and clearly not hit well majority of the time) had a good series.
@last why is it we can’t get a mature GM? who was the guy hicks fired when he arrived? class baseball guy………oh well…..
Kinsler hbp fisrt time up
Well great…Kinsler hit by pitch at first AB.
i actually would rather see us play for 2010 cause we’ll have a new owner by then and that will probably mean a new gm……..neither tom nor jd are deserving to be at the promised land with this team……
Kins HBP
first too
Theres no reason at all to fire JD. Almost every guy your excited about was brought here by JD.
@JustSaying: are you insane? JD has replenished and turned the farm into the best in baseball. They are now paying dividends in the majors. He’s also had some great wire pickups and low budget guys.
@scooper: TT has caught four; Salty has caught 3.
CD gets that.
@just: don’t forget that John hart was a mature fm. See how well he worked out.
say what you want but if you get a true baseball ownership group then jd will be gone……..
I think I am interested in seeing Teagarden more.
And what would the reasoning for that be?
@ehren hart was/is an arrogant ass that WAS HIRED BY HICKS
Evan it looked more like Porcello threw Youk down to me.
*rubbing his hands together*
Hunter just keeps getting better. If DH gets consistent and Nipper continues to improve… ah, don’t wake me! A Ranger fan can dream, can’t he?
@dc: yeah, Porcello side-stepped, then used Youk’s momentum against him.
It’s Perez time people!
@evan what does rusty have to say about his favorite/least favorite gm?
But he was a mature gm.
Teagarden = better defensively, same amt. of power, and just a smarter baseball player. Also calls a better game. Still think that Salty is the better prospect, especially with how far he has come this year, but I do think that they deserve to split time 50/50 instead of 80/20 Salty.
And I’m an Aggie, so you know i’m not biased towards TeaSipGarden…
How could the 3rd and 4th pitches in that walk not be strikes.
when a manager at your work can’t run the operation without a regular outbreak of “events” senior management looks down and says hey you’re not anticipating the problems and managing through them without “eruptions”
JD regularlly goes before the press and kicks the hell out of a player (problem player)……..a smart owner knows that in professional sports there are problem players and sometimes you win with them if you manage correctly……….a smart owner will want a gm who can mange those problem players without throwing away your investment in them…….
JD will be here with new owners i’d bet.
@scooper: that tackle reminded me of the Pedro tackle. Lol
@ehren: no one can beat Nolan vs. Ventura!
For the record, I don’t think Porcello should have received the same suspension Youkilis did. I guess technically he’s missing one start and Youk 5 but still…
ugly player releases
kenny rogers i blame hicks
ryan dreese JD?
tex yes good trade poor pr parted ugly
bradley definitely jd
padilla jd
hamilton management poor job from jd
ponson jd
Do the Rangers lead the majors in that category?
Think the old Hamilton is back.
@RangersFan: Porcello is getting his suspension for hitting Youk, not the fight.
rough first inning for perez. gave up 3 runs.
Dreese is no longer in majors is he? And all the others i don’t see the problem with when your as bad as the rangers were you take chances.
@scooper: THAT was awesome!!!!!! Still love watching that.
Seriously, what is the reasoning for Blalock still playing everyday? The offense as a whole is not “clicking”. Blalock as an individual is certainly not. And Davis’ defense is far superior. So this leaves us with…he’s a veteran and he’s MY’s bff?
I dont know if anyone follows Peter King on Twitter but he was upset that Porcello’s suspension was so short. What a big time Red Sox homer.
Teagarden. As much as possible.
@justsaying, you are blaming JD for Josh’s private life???
@Scooper: right, but I don’t think it was obviously intentional. No other sox pitcher’s were fined and/or suspended for throwing…
Another shot on order…
I am sad to say that I will not miss Blalock when he is gone. Used to be favorite player.
I think you can’t expect the Ranger pitcher to basically go up there and throw shutouts or at the most give up 2to 3 runs If the Rangers fall behind more than 4 runs hec I thnik game over and I dont think you could ever say that about a Rangers team
Volquez is out for the next year or so with surgery so it’s a wash for now.
@RF: I believe they are putting Davis’s long term success ahead of short term gain for the team this year. The let Davis get well in the majors plan did not work and they did not want to ruin him. But it is getting close to getting CD back up here.
@RangersFan: Everyone knows that you have a man crush on Salty and if anyone ever talks bad about him you’ll throw yourself in front of the bus to defend him. The bottom line is that TT has a better, more accurate arm than Salty and he calls a better game. He’s caught probably 20% of the games and has more shutouts than Salty so you CANT dispute that. If Salty hit like Mauer then he’d be worth it but he DOESNT.
@RangersFan: Youk was hit the night before; Miguel Cabrera (Det.) had been hit earlier in the game. Porcello hit Youk right in the middle of the back.
jason O
Don’t agree. Check the stats.
Whatever you may think of JD, and he’s certainly had his share of misses, you have to like the direction he has this club going. It’s a fun ride this year with a bright future.
Hunter is the man! Order a shot for me.
All the Rangers have to do is win two playoff games and JD’s the winningest GM the Rangers will have ever had. I would think that would earn him and Wash a little bit of slack.
Anybody else sick of the same 2 batting stance guy commercials they run.
Looking at some C stats tonight. Salty has caught roughly 70% of the Ranger games and 30% obviously for TT
three!
keep him honest, ehren!
Of the 7 Ranger shutouts this year TT has caught 4 of them. That’s roughly 12% of his starts result in goose eggs for the other team. Conversely Salty has 4%. This could be misleading due to the small sample size of TT’s games played.
4-1 red sox
I thought it was Andrus who walked! Those shots must be hitting home!
@longhorns…woah woah woah. I think he is the better catcher. We’ve seen that this year. Second, if there is a player I blindly defend in all situations, it’s going to be Davis, CJ, Kinsler or Hamilton, not salty. Next, yes some of the credit goes to the pitcher when he catches a shutout. However, a catcher can call a perfect game, but if the pitcher doesn’t make his pitches, things don’t go well. Is that the catcher’s fault? Lastly, ironically TT went to Texas and your name is Longhorns0707. Are you telling me you have no bias?
The most interesting stat is the Catcher’s ERA, which is slightly in favor of Salty (4.17 vs. 4.29)
7:48: Rich Hand just informed me that he has been given access to the Christy Matthewson Suite at Rangers Ballpark for Saturday’s Red Sox game. There are 16 tickets; $1,000. If interested, please email me.
Perez cannot get a low strike called at all even right down center of plate.
@DC: That strikezone is insane. A ball right down middle of the plate, about waste high…was a ball. I laughed out loud.
Been about 6 or 8 like that for Perez.
I wanted to compare the offensive stats of the two, but it appears to be sorting through which is poop and which is manure. So, in conclusion it’s really a wash though I think TT is hot right now and Salty is struggling.
Guys, I don’t think the minor league gameday is as accurate as the major league gameday. they don’t have pitch speed, type of pitch, or the box representing the strike zone. I doubt that the “ball” placement on the screen is particularly accurate. I’m listening to the game and it doesn’t sound like anything is wrong with the ump’s strike zone.
Good to know scooper…I was beginning to wonder about the ump.
EVAN: Update on Purke and Scheppers?
Well if gameday is right he’s getting screwed.
Byrd should change bat maker or type.
@Win’s Dad: Nothing on Purke or Scheppers. Checked today. I think Puke will heat up over the next 48 hours, but I am also confident that both sides understand the framework for a deal.
that first pitch that Perez threw, the announcer said it was down and in.
Pedro has a 4-1 lead in bottom of 3rd. Big Thunder Hunter for player of the game.
Thanks Evan for the update.
My vote: Hamilton for player of the game
player of the game Racer X or John Smith his real name
probably did not know who rusty Greer is oe Rich Hand never knows who is who when he is athe tunnel
knows more about movie stars because when u dont work and old people support u u watch alot of tv
so player of the game because he must have ate a bunch of fajitas
dorry Evan that guy is a real jerk and he sells what he gets unlike some of us who collect for the glory
I would like to nominate Strauch for most confusing post of the season.
@Evan – any news of the guys around Purke? (Scheppers is obviously going to drag on and on and on..) I think that would atleast set the above-slot requirements.
Also, re: Scheppers – since August doesn’t apply to him, when IS the deadline for recouping that pick in 2010 (which I think may have been the plan to begin with, given the money issues they face).
I really like what Elvis has been doing this year!
@Evan: Well, as far as dominating rookie performance, that’s gonna have to go to D-Hol. (Sunday’s game). Consistently good…Hunter.
Offensive game ball to Hammy.
Defensive game ball to Hunter.
Can I divide my vote in half?
@Ryan’s Dad… seconded.
I like D-Hol…but for me, D-Hol’s Sunday is second to Elvis in the Hole. (note, i didn’t scroll to find out if there was something about pitchers in the note)
@scooper: all walks have been accounted for.
Elvis should be ROY but doubt it happens.
@ehren: thanks!
@Ryans Dad: I took it that he has been doing too many shots with evan tonight
@Evan – didn’t the editors tell you? When you’re on remote, you have to wear a company shirt and no drinking until it’s over and you’ve changed.
I have not paid much attention to other teams. Who looks to be in the lead for the AL ROY?
The wierd thing about Hunter is he’s pitching 10 times better in bigs than he did in minors.
Standing O for “Big Game”
some guys just do that. Murph is playing better up here, too. and wasn’t Rusty Greer like that, too?
@Ehren, Enjoyed sharing a table with you and your lovely wife. Thank You for your hospitality. Does Evan need a ‘Designated Driver?’
Perez 2.2 in 7 run 6 earned 74 pitches. Ouch
a little adversity for the 18-year-old. nothing wrong with that.
Lots of grumbling among the prospephiles at the Hunter pick in the 07 draft.
This may be the best scouting, drafting, developmental, management group in history of team. There have been others adept at parts, but not all three at once.
@scooper… beat me to it on perez. I think that’s why they jumped him a level.
@scooper 2… If they’d have just let me in the bigs, I’d have proven that to be ultimately correct.
I agree and still think he got squeezed but wanna see how he does next time out he had to be nervous big time tonight.
@last: if I could have given you the opportunity, I would have!
He probably hasn’t even been there long enough to meet all of his teammates! I’m sure he’ll bounce back just fine!
TT as often as possible. Far better calling a game, strong arm, power, UT alum. Hook’em.
WOW! What a catch for the rook!
THAT was pretty!
What a catch by Borbon.
Sure, play TT as often as possible. He strikes out more and hits less.
Can Lewin stop claiming wins before they are wins…
the cubs aren’t only being embarrassed at Wrigley, they are on ESPN tonight.
I think that ump was ready for the game to be over.
That’s the way you draw them up. Good Win!!
CJ has some sneaky good stuff.
C.J. has excellent stuff! It’s his head that has always worried me.
Three K’s in the clutch is serious stuff.
Dang, wish I was there.
dreaming of a 2010 stretch run with Holland, Hunter and Feliz in the rotation and a 2011 that adds Perez has my baseball pants excited and help dull the pain of the Angels ridulous run.
Wahoo, won the homer pool.
studying the rangers K situation, the only 2 real areas that have to be address THROUGH the 2011 season are Frankie and CJ. Frankie is a FA after 2010 and CJ after 2011. Nobody else is coming up that is critical. In fact, the only other one that comes up period is BMac (also after 2011). This ignores the guys coming up after this year and Millwood next.
Pretty amazing salary control for the next 4-6 years.
Not sure we wind up doing something with FF (I don’t believe in paying crazy closer money), but would like to see CJ taken out a couple of years.
3 up:
Hunter
Hamilton
Squeeze
3 down:
Young
Salty
?
Filed under Gee-Whiz information, we find 3 former Ranger 1B that are tied with 29 HRs
Tex, Pina and A Gon. With any one we would be leading the pack. Well, maybe not, since CD had 16 or so and league leading Ks. But still, To Dream is Divine
Kinsler was taken out of the Frisco game….hope this doesnt mean anything.
I doubt it means anything that Kinsler was taken out. I was at the game and left after the 7th with Tulsa up 10-4. he got 4 ABs and the game started 3 hours ago so they just took him out to be safe i bet.
PS…I got the Moreland HR ball. My first HR/foul ball in 32 years of living. I was acting like a 5 year old after getting it so I left early to escape the humiliation.
Thanks for the info Tony.
Did Kinsler get any hits?
