6:30: The Home Run Pool is open, but there is no lifeguard on duty. However, the lineup is here. Although Ian Kinsler isn’t sure who is writing it out.
7:18: C Jarrod Saltalamacchia saw vascular specialist Dr. Greg Pearl before today’s game, but there has been no further update to his status beyond “shoulder fatigue.” Among Pearl’s specialties are Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)repair. He removed a rib to alleviate pressure on an artery in LHP Matt Harrison’s shoulder earlier in the season. Daniels said he could not comment on whether the Rangers suspected TOS as the root of Saltalamacchia’s recent arm issues. One of the symptoms, however, is numbness in the hand or arm. Saltalamacchia left Friday’s game with numbness in his hand.
7:30: The Rangers will search for a backup catcher via a trade route, GM Jon Daniels acknowledged. For now, though, the job belongs to Taylor Teagarden. Washington said there are no concerns about Teagarden’s past shoulder and back issues that would prevent him from catching every day.
“He looks strong,” Washington said. “He’s certainly worked very hard to this point during his down time to get himselef ready. His past situations have not come into play.”
7:41: I’d say the new lineup is working out OK at this point. Borbon: Lead off single. Kinsler: Homer on a two-strike pitch.
8:08: Manager Ron Washington also sought to cut off any talk of issues at closer after RHP Frank Francisco allowed six runs in the ninth inning Friday. Francisco has struggled in the second half of three back-to-back outings since returning from his first stint on the DL this season. He has allowed base runners in all three of them, has not pitched a complete inning and has allowed eight runs.
Washington said he had no plans to juggle the closer’s role. He also said he would not hesitate to use Francisco on back-to-back days.
“He’s the closer,” Washington said. “I don’ know how you could call him the closer if you can’t go back-to-back days. I know what the numbers say, but I would not hesitate to use him on back-to-back days. Three days in a row is something else. [Victor] Martinez just got him. Boston just got him. That’s all there is to it.
It should be noted that the back-to-back work didn’t seem to diminish the velocity on Francisco’s fastball. He averaged 92.8 mph on Friday; it was 92.5 mph on Thursday.
8:15: And another thing: LHP Eddie Guardado isn’t going anywhere just yet, according to Washington.
Washington said he is aware of Guardado’s poor batting average against left-handed hitters – it’s now .370 after David Ortiz homered – but he is also aware that Guardado has a long track record of succes.
“Me, personally, I’m not worried about Eddie,” Washington said. “I know what the numbers say there, too. And I know people will say I’m stupid, but I have confidence in him. Sometimes things go in your favor; sometimes they don’t. You need to have a guy’s back sometimes. I’ve got his.”
8:31: Go-Go Rangers. Five steals by Borbon and Elvis Andrus. If I didn’t ask this question before, I’ll ask it now: How do you like this lineup?
8:44: Can we blame this one on Obagain? Guillermo Moscoso gives up a hit with one out in the sixth to end Oklahoma City’s streak of 14 consecutive no-hit innings against Salt Lake City.
8:56: Rangers entered the fifth one stolen base shy of club record set on the next-to-last day of the 1978 season. And just in case you are looking ahead, there has been only one AL team steal eight bases in a game this decade. It was Tampa Bay. Against Boston in May. With Jason Varitek behind the plate.
9:20: Darren O’Day warming for Texas, so maybe the club is holding Neftali Feliz back for the ninth.
9:27: I’m accusing the Rangers of selling out. And by that I mean seats. They sold 48,201 tonight, making it the third packed house of the season.
9:31: Update on Jarrod Saltalamacchia: After preliminary exam by Dr. Greg Pearl, it was announced that the catcher exhibits some signs of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, but not enough to make a final diagnosis. A further round of exams will be scheduled for the coming week.
9:45: Rangers get insurance run on balk call. Ya take ‘em however you can get ‘em.
10:01: Andrus has to run, doesn’t he?
10:02: Well, I typed that too quickly. Andrus steals second for his third steal of the night, seventh for the Rangers. Ties the club record of eight set on Sept. 29, 1978 at Seattle.
10:04: The Rangers have made the Red Sox look silly with their speed tonight. Two bungled infield fielding plays and a balk.
10:05: So, there is your club record as Julio Borbon steals second. Borbon has four steals, Andrus three and Kinsler one. The only other AL team to steal eight this decade was Tampa Bay against Boston in May of this season.
10:08: The last AL team to steal more than eight in a game was the Oakland Athletics, who stole 12 against Minnesota on August 1, 1976. I’m pretty sure Varitek did not catch that game. By the way, that was a 12-inning game. First of a doubleheader. Glenn Borgmann and former Rangers minor league instructor Butch Wynegar shared the shame behind the plate for the Twins. Well, most of it was Borgmann’s; 11 of the steals came against him.
10:17: Kinsler and Jason Varitek trade words after Kinsler is hit in left ear hole by 91 mph fastball from Fernando Cabrera.
10:18: Home plate umpire Angel Hernandez has a word with Neftali Feliz before the ninth inning. That’s probably not an official warning, but a gentle one. No funny business.
10:25: Post-game show will be coming your way shortly.
Penny’s going down.
I wonder does Wash feel like he is even in charge of his team what other manager would let others write his lineupcard you think Lou Pinella or Terry Frnacona now. I understand Wash is not in those guys league but this is like Jerry jones telling his coach I am bringing in a player whether you like it or not oh wait that did happen TO. If they do not trust him to manage this team then bring somebody in that they will let write their own lineupcards. I think they just cut Wash legs right undernmeath him and you think the other players are going to have alot of respect for a manager who cannot even make his own decisions. They must be thinking man who is running this show John Hart Nolan Jd or hec even Jerry Jones what a joke they just made Wash look like. I almost feel sorry for the man
But, he shouldnt have told Kinsler it wasnt his decision.
@Evan – Ian’s statement and RW’s don’t seem to match exactly. Kins made it sound like RW said it wasn’t his call whereas RW makes it sound like it was discussed as an org. which are not the same things. Any feel for which is the true picture or am I reading too much into the words used?
I agree Chad and what kind of message does this send the team or do they even care
On the radio, Wash just retold his version that he wants Borbon leading off. Guess he didnt think Kinsler would tell the media what was said between the two of them.
Ian’s a head case. He should not have aired this publically the way he did.
Me thinks Ian is not quite a head case, but high maintenance for sure.
You certainly sense some “I” before team in him, yes?
He forget about Ian being a head case how about the manager acutally being able to manage and not having to take a call from somebody upstairs saying this is the way to do your lineup. Hec are they going to be calling the signs and when to change pitchers too.
How did Ian air it? All he said was..”it is what it is.” ?????
Bob Bob Bob whats up how are you
I’m reposting what I put under Evan’s article:
Let’s just play baseball. Dang, this is all white noise. This isn’t unique. Organizations weigh in on decisions all the time. Doesn’t make Wash underminded or weak. So Ian’s pissed. Good. Make them change their mind.
Play ball.
I will never get to call in to your show which I enjoy so glad to talk to you hear
Yeah!! Now we have the Sturminator on our side.
@Bob – Now you have something else to talk to Ian about next week. Why would Ian not think he was throwning Wash under the bus? Telling the media that your manager’s been neutered?
@bob – i think he’s a highly competitive dude. he reminds me of troy. troy would get pissed in similar situations.
Seems to me this could have been a case of RW recognizing Ian is a key piece to this team and wanting to make sure that JD and Nolan understood what he was going to do and why, and they agreed with his decision. That’s a whole lot different than getting permission or getting told to make a change.
Wash screwed up. Basic principle of leadership. Never tell your guys that it is not your decision. “I don’t like it, but they made me do it.” If you don’t like your orders, you can argue your case up the chain of command. Eventually, you will win your argument or they will tell you to shut your mouth and do what they tell you to do. Once you accept the orders, they are yours. You had your chance to obey or not, and to accept the consequences. NEVER tell a subordinate that it wasn’t your decision.
Ian said:
Kinsler said Washington informed him it wasn’t his decision.
btw, I have personally guaranteed AT LEAST a 4 hit shutout by Dutch tonight. I assure you, I made this promise BEFORE I started drinking the Jack and Diet. However, I am beginning to consider moving my prediction to a 3 hitter
Locker room issue, shame Ian threw Wash under the bus like that (@TB read the article).
Certainly agree with Jack Daddy, but Ian put it out there (right in the middle of the biggest series of the year), therefore its new and “it is what it is”.
Our new backup catcher has been in the minors for 8 years and this is his first call-up. JD’s going to get a catcher from another team.
Angels 5-1 top 4th
Ian’s pissed. I say it again – good.
Listen guys – I have a close friend that is good friends with Jake Peavy. That dude doesn’t give a crap about winning or playoff berths (at least he doesn’t act like). All he cares about is hunting and the groupie in that particular town. That team didn’t a crap about that series. They partied until dawn the night they lost the opener and didn’t give 2 crap$ about it.
I really get the sense that our guys care. So I say, I’m glad Ian’s pissed.
Ok, new day, new game and Rangers still have the leg up on Sox for the year. Holland pitching… Let’s go Rangers.
@Ralph…It doesn’t matter what Ian does. Most of you are out to crucify him regardless. Of course the media is going to ask him what he thinks. So he gave a few short answers. I did read the article by the way. And if he had declined to comment then he would have been a head case…”I” in team guy regardless. What do you ant from the guy?
New topic – it seems the move of Josh OUT of CF is now official and complete, huh?
They called up Richardson because, when they get another catcher, they will have to put Richardson on waivers.
As long as Borbon is here they need to see what he can do. We know what Josh can do so get as good a look as you can at Borbon. I believe Josh will see more CF but not as often
i hope so jack daddy we need him fresh as he can be the rest of the year
2nd new topic:
The organizaiton hung on SO LONG before making the decision to send Davis down. They clearly wanted him up here. Now, when it seems he is ready to get back, they say it isn’t in consideration. Strange huh?
Makes me think that his swing is still showing the same “hole” (whatever it was) and he is just taking advantage of AAA pitching (or they REALLY want it to “stick”, like Cruz last year).
Or they are just inconsistent in their approach to this team.
InsideCorner where everyone is out to get Ian Kinsler
Go Rangers!!
Jack daddy its the Rangers hec for all we know John Hart could still be calling the shots
1st inning: 13 pitches, 13 fastballs.
Good start Derek! Let’s go Rangers, let’s go!
Puss hit, to lead off and then my boy finished them off. Can only give up 3 more. Not worried.
3rd new topic:
who else wants to smash a Red Sox fan in the face? I have 1st row behind the on deck circle tomorrow (well old first row, before the addition) – got lucky with tickets.
I’ve already instructed my 7 year old to blast them with his patented “Sit Down!” after strikeouts. We’ve never been THIS close, so can’t wait.
wheres bob
@Jack Daddy: I guess we’ll really know about Hamilton’s true OF position when Cruz comes back.
This is the game to pound them. Penny is roast beef. This is the kind of guy that a Blalock handles.
I don’t know that Ian is pissed (implying intensely angry), he could just as easily be upset from a competitive point of view. I mean, what do you want him to say? “Yeah, actually I am glad not to be batting lead off. I sort of wish I’d be 9th, but I guess 6th isn’t bad.”
hey the leadoff guy didnt pop it up to the outfield with an upper cut swing wow
Who cares who made the decision, at this moment in time it appears to be a good call.
i never understood DHing a young guy like Borbon. Don’t make him sit in the dugout waiting to hit, getting over-anxious. Then wait after the AB, stewing on it. Put him in field.
I like this kid. I see no reason why he can’t be the player Ellsbury is.
@Alan –
I guess we scared him off.
Kinsler would have swung at the first pitch and popped up. I’m glad the “Organization” is starting to realize that Wash doesn’t have a clue how to manage a team i.e. (Guardado last night or Jennings with men on)
The decision keeps getting better
btw, i’m machine gunning right now, because about to head out to a “Things White People” like party that my wife is dragging me to. I’m wearing my Holland jersey though. Leaving soon, so carry this one through for me!
i think we need more bob
Ever think that the other reason to bat Kinsler 6th right now is to shake up some guys to put last night out of mind?
I wish the baseball Jesus would somenight join us on hjere
Thoughts on a couple of these topics: I believe management thought the quality of 1B defense would go way down when they turned the keys over from Davis to Blalock and it didn’t happen. I expected to hear “Davis would have had that” not just from bloggers but Nadel at least 5 times a night. Didn’t happen. Given that, I think that management would rather stick with the veteran Blalock in this pennant race. If the team were burried, Davis would be back by now IMO.
And yes, it goes without saying that I’d love to smash Red Sox Nation in the face. Hopefully the Rangers do it for us the next two days.
I got home a little late and missed the pre-game. Where’s Josh (Lewin)? Doing national broadcast?
Think Kinsler would have been as upset if he had been dropped from 1st to 3rd?
@the beer guy: san diego chargers play-by-play
Agree with TAG, though I think MY has suffered with men RISP because he has tried to over=compensate for the absence of Josh.
Of course AJM will say its because his Zone Rating sucks.
Chargers are playing tonight–doesnt Lewin call for them?
@TBG-Chargers
According to Mike Bascik last night this is the worst umpire in the League. Get ready for a very inconsistent strike zone tonight
@lamar in PA – I actually completely agree with you. Though Hank’s offense since the ASB is getting silly. Not a single walk? Really?
Why in da hell is Murphy still hitting third and not Hamilton, also why is Byrd still hitting clean up
no ehren tonight?
no fred?
no Rangers Fan or Becca?
@texas rocks, i actually love Murph, Byrd, Hammy 3-4-5. A lot.
All due respect to Mike Bascik – I think Tim McClellan might have something to say about that
I’ve never seen a hitter go from 220 to 265 in August. Ever.
Barnett is much better on TV than radio. seems much more relaxed and is doing a good job of pulling insight from TAG.
@JackDaddy: Keep in mind that he was on the DL a lot, he doesn’t have as many AB’s as most.
based load for Kins in his first AB? wow, nice drama.
Bascik said it wasn’t even close and every player and manager felt that way. I don’t know first hand so I’m gonna take his word for it.
that was the old new josh. or the new old. the sucky one.
Penny just got lucky on that one
@JackDaddy: he didn’t swing at the first pitch. still a better Josh.
separated at birth:
Bob Sturm = Batting Stance Guy?
this kinsler wash controversy is all vincente padilla’s fault……..let’s be very clear about who to blame………
another puss hit
@RD- probably depends on pitchers or hitters. Problem with McClellan is his “fluid” interpretation of the strike zone and his Hot Dog attitude
calling double play rigth here from this big water buffalo
Nice pop up
The updated strikeout toal for the year is 913 and 334 walks lets go for 920 tonight
The BPiA has the slowest radar gun in the league. Either that, or EVERY OTHER STADIUM is 2-4 mph faster.
@Jack Daddy – I actually would rather see them Murph/Byrd – Cruz – Hamilton…… once Nellie gets back. Murph against righties, Byrd against lefties. Evan’s data about Murph hitting .197 against lefties got my attention…
i blame last night’s loss on padilla as well
Sit Down!!
Holland’s ERA now below 5. That’s awesome considering some bad appearances. Was 6.63 at highest pt.
25 pitches thru 2 innings.
Derek Holland looks like a Major League Ace. I know it’s too early and that he will have his ups and downs, but the kid just “looks like an ace”
Time for Jack and DC #3. Hopefully, I’m not drinking alone!
Kins get to be 2nd lead-off man. That’s a nice consolation prize
is that the real baseball jesus aka mike rhyner i bet not
Have I mentioned how much I love watching this kid pitch? JD’s best decision as GM? NOT trading DH. (Ok, maybe that Tex trade was the best, but this is a close 2nd) lol
MLB Gameday has avg. FB velocity for Holland as 91.2. Velocity is not as high today, yet. Remember, he said that backing off on velocity a little helped his command.
@texas Rock – that’s because he is. I’m not terribly smart, I don’t make near enough money and I am only average in bed, but I know an ace when I see one.
I’m betting HOME-RUN SWING!
wash is a genius
haha!!!!
OPPOSITE way!
Holy crap. I think I just won the pool!
@scooper, Best speed comes in 4th 0r 5th inning.
you called it, Tom B!
Well I guess Kins is out to prove em wrong…
@Tom B – good bet!
I laughed out loud when Kinsler hit that homer, I stick by my desire to have him do that lower in the order so it’s more likely someone will be on at the time.
@easy eddie – i like that too, when cruz gets back.
@TomB: I said, “…yet.”
as kins rounds the bases i’m certain he had a few choice words for jd……..
that’s only Kins’ 2nd opp field job in the majors (his other off Doc Halladay), per Ian himself (at least as far as he could remember).
Nope, I got scooped by tippet. He had the outs and baserunners correct
anybody know how many of kinsler’s homers have been solo’s?
914
angels 5-1 top 6th
@ryansdad: you don’t have to have outs, but you must have the player, the inning and the # of men on base. Count and distance are teh tiebreakers.
ok, they are hiding something regarding Salty.
7:45: How’s that new lineup workin’ out? First impressions aren’t bad at all.
@tett, Most!
did elvis strain his hammy on that? he looked like he was hitching.
HA!!! Lack of communication on that one.
Nice hustle there Anderson
@evan: as Jack Daddy pointed out, it was also an opposite-field homer.
@Tett: 14 of Kinsler’s 23 homers have been solos. That’s actually pretty good considering he’s been in the leadoff spot all season. Consider these numbers: Nelson Cruz 20 of 25 have been solo; Hank Blalock 16 of 23; Michael Young 14 of 20.
Did anyone get a distance on the Kins homer?
That was weird…ok, how much did we pay Anderson for that?
@Tom b- yeah it certainly seems that way, i just don’t know exactly where to find out the exact number
wash is a super genious
hell yeah! Andrus & Borbon!
@evan,
The reason i don’t see us getting a C is i fear that teams would block us on the waiver wire.
I would love to bring pudge in and would offer Poveda, if I could get a lower level prospect back (which would help my 40 man issues, which won’t be too bad this Winter, but will be a nightmare after 2010 unless we move a lot of talent).
@All: I repeat my question – how’s that new lineup workin’ out for ya?
And the decision is looking better still
@Jack: I don’t think so.
Borbon 2 for 2…
@Evan: Oh you know Ranger fans, they’ll find SOMETHING to complain about eventually
don’t you still here with 2 outs? first pitch, i say.
jeez – that would be “steal” not “still”. Maybe mrs jack daddy drives us to our party!
I would say in my expert opinion that there is no hangover effect from last night
Borbon is playing like he WANTS that leadoff spot!
Lineup looking like it stays this way so far.
Yep Little O… I agree
hey guys, still having internet issues.
calling 3 run shot here by murph.
maybe what Kins needs is some competition for the lead-off spot. If it gets him going opposite field, I’m all for it!
@ Evan, The rumor is, You were the Other Guy in that Wash decision on Batting Order. Give us the scoop here Big ‘E’
This would be an excellent time for Murphy to act like he wants the #3 hole.
@Jack Daddy: I said this last night, but will reiterate it, I don’t think many teams will block on catchers. The last thing they want to get stuck with is a third catcher on a roster before Sept. 1. Teams can move pitchers around, but three catchers are three catchers.
Contrary to my talk last night, I don’t think you are going to see a Rod Barajas or Pudge Rodriguez here. I think you are more likely looking at a straight backup. A guy who might fit that profile and is languishing on a bad team is San Diego’s Henry Blanco.
Penny already at 49 pitches.
EFf you Dustin Pedroia, you over rated piece of crap!!!
Hitting into an error doesn’t count.
@Tom B: No truth to that rumor. I don’t think I’d have argued one way or another, but certainly have liked the electricity with which the Rangers have played the first two innings.
I knew it….. Evan, you are taking over… Playoffs here we come now!!!!
@evan thanks for the info, and the high ratio of solos to total homers has been frustrating. I mean I certainly don’t want them to stop hitting homers with the bases empty, but it would be nice to see some more of those jacks come with runners on.
@evan – good point. didn’t think of that. I could see Boston claiming a pudge, but they are behind us.
I don’t want them to bring in a starting catcher. I want to see TT play and see what he can do. A back-up catcher is fine with me.
Lineup’s working. Was is genious!
Come on TAG that was so clearly on error on Pedroia. He had it in his glove and wildly transferred it to his right hand and dropped it. No question.
Byrd has got to lay off those first pitch swings. He could have worked Penny, made him throw a good strike.
@Evan – love the lineup, just needs Cruz back in the middle to look really good. I love having Borbon’s speed at the top and he and Elvis back to back give some small ball opportunities that could be interesting. You can already see Borbon’s speed bothering Penny and helping the other hitters.
@ralph: even though he claims that it wasn’t his idea!
okay what is the record for put outs for one player in the game
Whyyyyyy does Byrd so often swing at the first pitch? It kills me. And rallies.
@evan- love borbon hitting leadoff to answer your repeated questions. And I like that Wash and/or JD and/or Nolan are shaking things up a bit.
yep -the effort has been refreshing and the resiliency is just amazing
I agree with Scooper, let TT be our main guy, but I really hope that if Salty is out, we can bring in a veteran (Pudge would be great for obvious reasons). Respectfully, I’m not sure career minor leaguers being brought up are what we need at this point in a pennant race.
I wonder if errors are made because of Borbons speed or thinking about it?
plus side of it is penny has thrown 50 pitches in 2 innings.
Why wasn’t anyone covering second base there? Ian?
hank not covering second on the throw in.
Well, well! Ellsbury came up limping.
Wife’s at Harrah’s in New Orleans.
I’m at home watching chefography and MLB Gameday.
I lose.
Hopefully Holland can go aways tonight.
I am telling yall its probably John hart calling the shots why else do we make these moves lol
I like the unified front on the Kinsler thing. This club has a well earned reputation of star players playing politics with front office undermining managers and coaches. Nolan isn’t going to tolerate that stuff.
Holland’s location is “on” tonight…
re: Pudge.
I don’t think the Astros would do anything to help the Rangers, even if it helped them.
They won’t do win-win with Tex – especially since Hicks stole Ryan back.
38 pitches thru 3.
you know, this holland is good.
ok, boys. heading out. bring it home. Long live Dutch, the Master of the Universe, my hero and my man-love interest.
@evan, if these idiots don’t have the TV on, I’m emailing you for updates.
@EasyEddie: Going to be hard to fit Cruz and Borbon into the lineup without sitting either Murphy or Byrd.
Just a thought (even though it is a bit early): Holland is doing what an ace does – after a touch loss, against a touch opponent, go out and put up 0′s (in a convincing manner).
916 four more for 920 wow we rock
lets see how hamilton adjusts.
man, I can’t even spell “tough”!
It’s a diffucolt word to spell, scoop.
a walk!
good to see kins off to a good start.
I think TAG is wrong. I think Ian will want to keep up with Borbon.
Well maybe this is a good sign for Kins and the Rangers.
not even close.
Loving the guys running wild tonight too, they’d fallen back into less agressive offensive habits over the last couple weeks.
Note: I typed that BEFORE Ian stole 2nd.
at least he moved him over.
Now any pitch in the dirt could score a run potentialy.
Ok, time to knock another run in here.
You know, now that the Rangers have pitchers with control, the brick facade might have been a bad idea
70 pitches for penny through 3
8:08: Manager Ron Washington also sought to cut off any talk of issues at closer after RHP Frank Francisco allowed six runs in the ninth inning Friday.
My AFLAC trivia question is Chili Davis
Ok the Red Sox nation needs to shut up and go home…
evan, did wash explain why he left ff in long enough to give up 6 runs?
Probably because he didn’t have anyone warming up.
You can tell Varitek is a catcher – he’s not arguing because he wants that pitch for his guy, too.
rick, why not, there was plenty of time and they were hitting him hard.
@Evan – you are right. I am thinking against lefties you have an OF of Borbon, Byrd, Ham with Cruz as DH, against righties you have Borbon, Ham, Murph with Cruz as DH. Of course you can mix and match some for matchups and rest. This gives you good D, speed and power. Plus with either Murph or Byrd on the bench you have a PH for late in the game if you need them. Thoughts?
@Obagain: No, but he wasn’t asked. I don’t know where I would have taken him out either before the homer. You keep thinking he’s going to get the last out; he just didn’t and when it became 8-4, there was no more thinking about it.
@easyeddie: Sounds somewhat feasible, but right now, it’s hard for me to take any of those guys out of the lineup. This is one game for Borbon in the leadoff spot. Before I start thinking anything more, I’d want to see what he doses the next couple of days, too.
Nice pitching kid
Have I mentioned how much I enjoy watching this kid pitch?
YES!!! Holland steps up after the homer / walk and strikes em out
The good part about having kins bat higher is he will cut into jones’s playing time.
I actually would like to see Kins hit 4th behind Josh.
You know, with the way Hunter is coming around we may have a really great potential 1-2 punch in those guys.
@Ranger: throw in Feliz, also. the way his secondary pitches look, they should give him another chance to start.
If you are a young leftie, say aj murray, does it bother you that the manager says he is sticking with eddie as a lefty specialist even though lefties are hitting 370 against him?
You have had a good year but wont get a shot because wash likes eddie.
any chance elvis is running?
@Evan – I hear you, I just love the speed threat Borbon brings to the lineup, along with Elvis speed of course. I know it’s not exactly true but I kinda see it as exchanging AJones for Borbon. I’ll take that trade.
a stolen base on a pitch out!
These guys are just running at will…!!!
pitch out and still didnt come close.
And then takes 3rd.
Elvis! Elvis!
Nice baserunning kid
did you see that smile on Elvis’ face?
great base-running by elvis!
@ob – it probably does, but I remind myself that Holland doesn’t progress the way he has without Eddie around.
Look at the Padilla stories… Young, Byrd, Guardado were the ones everyone quoted, that were there out front to speak for the players. Not often is a LOOGY ever quoted about anything other than his performance.
Speed kills.
Speed kills, baby! Woo-hoo!
Borbon steals here for #3 on the night
Great minds think alike, obagin!
I know it’s only one game, but I love the combo of andrus and borbon at the back of the lineup. Greatness.
How abot that guy batting in the 1 hole???
Wow, I know anything can still happen, but what a way for our guys to come out and scrap the day after a brutal beating
@last: and everyone was saying that Holland was following Eddie around like a puppy.
last, look at holland in the dugout, he is constantly in millwoods ear, I give more props to millwood.
What’d I just say
There’s some of that small ball I was talking about earlier. Glad to see RW letting the kids be aggressive.
Just easy. Veritek has the slowest release in the game.
8:31: Go-Go Rangers. Five steals by Borbon and Elvis Andrus. If I didn’t ask this question before, I’ll ask it now: How do you like this lineup?
now we have a hole because they have to cover 3rd.
For the record, Evan, LOVE this lineup!
@Evan, should have been done a long, long time ago
evan, I love the speed in the 1 and 9 spots.
wash is the best manager in the game
83 pitches for Penny.
it makes the pitcher think so much more when you have speed on the bases.
I really enjoy listening to Dave Barnett better than Josh Lewin.
Ok Murph… anything out of the infield works.
I agree scooper.
@evan: is C.J. the closer tonight?
I like any lineup that gets 6 hits and 3 walks in 3.1 innings.
Evan, you might want to keep an eye on the OKC game.
Great lineup. Never a doubt
I think they should bring back Rhynes in the booth. What a show that would be.
and 4 steals..
up to 91 pitches
@scooper: That was the general hint that Ron Washington dropped before the game, but Wilson had a 27-pitch inning last night and managers aren’t going to divulge any information pre-game that could be of use to the opponent, so I’m not entirely confident on how the 9th would be set up. My gut: Wilson might face a guy or two.
I predict a Byrd double here
@obagain: don’t tell me it is another one like last night!
Murphy should take off. No way they even throw with Borbon 90 feet away.
Marlon gets the job done.
Here’s a thought, let’s just let Holland pitch them all!
@evan: would he give Feliz a chance to close?
scooper, thru 5.
Let’s try not to need a closer tonight
I have no problem with Feliz closing in this situation.
@ryansdad: I’m all for letting Holland pitch them all, but he is at 60 pitches thru 4. 7 or 8 innings is more likely.
@obagain: who is pitching?
@Obagain: Oh, goodness.
With Nadel, he said Feliz could close tonight. But, that it would probably be the 2nd inning of the appearance (8th-9th).
scooper, moscoso.
geez, Elvis is so smooth. love the young guns on this team
@scooper: Moscoso pitching for OKC; wouldn’t surprise me if Washington used Feliz for 8th and o’day for ninth if Wilson not available or go Feliz for four batters, wilson to face lefty, O’Day to face right-hander.
well the no-no ended in the 6th.
@Evan – can we expect an AAA-Twitter update?
Fastest team ever had to be those mid-80′s Cards teams with Vince Coleman, Willie McGhee, and 5 other fast guys with Jack Clark batting cleanup
No hitter over
I’ve deployed the AAA Gamecast while listening to the Rangers. Didn’t even know such a thing existed until I did a web search for it when Obagain mentioned the goings-on.
8:44: Can we blame this one on Obagain? Guillermo Moscoso gives up a hit with one out in the sixth to end Oklahoma City’s streak of 14 consecutive no-hit innings against Salt Lake City.
What’s up with M Moreland?
Wow, I’m a total jinx!
I think having the luxury of facing the Penny/Veritek is making this lineup look really good – six steals and counting.
@wordup – Ozzie Smith, maybe Jose Oquendo?..
Plus, they were playing on carpet in sneakers. They could giddyup.
Eric Nadel had just mentioned the no-hitter right before he lost it, so we could blame him…
now lets put up 3 right here.
at least they were both solo HR’s.
Holland’s biggest weakness is his tendency to give up homeruns. He tends to groove fastballs on occasion and guys don’t miss. He said earlier that his biggest trouble isn’t pitch selection, it’s pitch location. This game seems to be baring that out. His fastball is dominating on the corners. It’s easy to give up bombs, though, if the fb is all you throw and you pipe one.
Victor Martinez taking Vladimir Guerrero’s place as a Rangers killer?
Geez, how ’bout we walked him for the rest of the series.
I think the fastest guy I ever saw in person was bo jackson, that guy could fly.
hey did anybody catch the answer to the pregame trivia question? who was the ranger before michael young to hit 20 homers as a SS and a 3B? I just realized I missed it…
I think it is hilarious that Kins is being more disciplined at the plate when he is hitting 6th.
917
Here comes a Blalock walk
@tett Toby Harrah
Does Hammer really have to try to pull EVERY pitch?
or maybe i didn’t…
thanks LT
918
@bigskinny: not quite.
Can we at least get davis back for his defense?
ah blalock the poster boy for plate discipline…….
I almost called the first blalock walk in a month…that would have deserved a Dr. Pepper, right?
@Chadb: Moreland fractured a bone in his foot.
LOL…Blalockkkkkkk wouldn’t take a walk if a pitch was ten feet short of home plate.
@Evan – to continue your lineup questions: who should eventually replace Blalock in the 7 spot – Bird, Murphy, or Cruz?
919
Hank and Taylor back-to-back in any lineup is just brutal
And TT is a joke at the plate.
At least Holland is kicking tail.
@evan: is anyone up in the Sox’ ‘pen, or are they sending Penny back out for the 6th? He’s at 108 pitches.
just made a quick run to the store. i used to go when the rangers were pitching so i would miss as few ranger at bats as possible, now i go when the rangers are batting, so i miss as few rangers pitches as possible… my how things have changed this season
Evan, after watching penny, the sox released smoltz and kept penny.
He just had a good inning but are you sure you would want smoltz as a starter?
angels 5-1 final
@Tom in Cali: Hmmmm. You are going to have to replace a first baseman too, so it’s either Murphy at first or Davis back in the big leagues. I’d guess you are looking at Cruz there on the nights he doesn’t hit in the middle of the order. I’m getting very confused trying to shove a dozen guys into a nine-man lineup.
I’ve always felt the lineup could carry Salty r Taylor– guys in an important position (c), who are young, good D.
But when you have one of those guys, plus guys like Hank, AJ, Davis also in a lineup…
@jb – you coulda gone before the game?
@scooper: Manny Del Carmen was up in the fifth, but nobody is up at this minute.
@last: that’s what I was thinking!
speaking of swinging at bad pitches, did anyone see the highlight of vlad swinging and hitting a ball that bounced in the dirt from yesterday’s angels-orioles game?
TAG seems much happier with Lewin gone
I want elvis on again so I can watch the sox sweat.
Oh, yeah! Let’s get Andrus and Borbon on and see some more stolen bases!
time for another round of steals.
@last: yes i wish i could foresee my food cravings
I have a ? why in the world is little league baseball regional final on espn baseball I understand the world series but man when is it considered overexposure
Dang elvis, you can’t steal if you don’t get on base.
@all what is the difference in holland now and earlier in the year when he struggled so badly?
I’m impressed with Julio’s plate dicipline
Well, seems like he has a better plan, for starters… plus, its easier to build on success.
@word: he’s looked good tonight. Not afraid to go to the opposite field, either. Those K’s the other night didn’t look good, though. He needs to be more consistant. One good night does not make a lead-off batter.
justsaying, he is learning how to pitch to big leaguers.
earlier he would throw strikes down the middle and paid dearly for it.
Now he still makes a few mistakes but he is learning better location.
i can’t see sitting murph or byrd with blalock doing what he is doing…….
@JustSaying… simple – experience.
@Just: command is better. so are secondary pitches. Plus, I think, confidence. He looks like he knows that he belongs.
Run, Mike, RUN!
@evan Why didn’t they put Andrus up in leadoff and Borbon 9th. Elvis has more ML experience.
2010 may look something like this:
Borbon- CF
Young- 2b
Ham- Rf/DH
Cruz-LF/RF/DH
Kinsler- 2B
Murphy- DH/LF
Davis- 1b
Veteran catcher to be acquired offseason
Andrus-SS
@Ranger: even in the minors, Elvis batted 2nd. Borbon has been a lead-off hitter the whole time. It is a different situation.
here’s the video of vlad hitting the pitch that bounces… vlad’s bat literally hits the dirt http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090815&content_id=6439870&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
but he’s still throwing a lot of fastballs……has he improved his location THAT FAST……….geez he seems to be a damn quick study……..he can’t have changed his mechanics has he?
@JustSaying- Main difference to me is his focus
Ok, makes sense.. just wondering
@scoop- completely agree, though the same rules apply to a bad game.
I think playing in the field instead of (preposterly) DH’ing has a lot to do with how comfortable he looks tonight.
@Ranger_Rick: evan’s answered this question before… borbon has more leadoff experience. he has been brouht up through the system leading off at each level of the minors, while elvis went through the system batting in the number 2 spot
He had solid mechanics to start with – I doubt that he has changed anything there. I really think it is command and confidence.
oops, i just repeated what scoop said
@ JB: Vlad would be a cricket star.
Man, the Orioles are just cursed. Even Ranger fans can say that about the O’s. Awful.
scooper, I agree and will add he could get guys in AA-AAA to swing at trash pitches but up here they wont, he had to adjust to that.
Huge inning in a 2 run game. Leadoff single..yikes
its ok jb… your forgiven…
9:20: O’Day up for the Rangers, so maybe Feliz is being held back for the eighth or ninth.
Well, that cleans that up. wow.
@obagain: good point.
Fine DP… great defense.
here comes the hook
OT: Malcolm in the Middle is Awesome.
Fine game for Holland.
nice ovation for the kid.
look at that kids xxxx eating grin…….what a beast…….
up to the pen now. rebound time
See, he’s even learned to cover his mouth when he is cussing! It would be nice, though, if he acknowledged the standing O.
Fantastic game. It is really enjoyable seeing the Rangers with great pitching.
Twitter Repost:
VictorRojas29 Derek Holland = bueno #redsox #texasrangers
i don’t like this 4-2 score
bidness is a boomin’
feliz in the ninth is a marketing move…….
@evan: do they let Feliz pitch the 8th and 9th (assuming no problems in the 8th)?
Nooooo! Don’t take him out yet. I’m having too much fun watching him pitch.
sit down midget
Well, guess the steal didn’t matter anyway.
I assume O’day handles the 8th, too. The 9th could be fun
O’DAY!!!!
Holland didn’t even have his A game and he still pitched a good game.
Feliz in the 9th?
I hope O’Day comes back for the 8th, and Feliz for the 9th.
@justsayin: pinch hitting a midget is a marketing move. Giving away bobbleheads is a marketing move. Pitching a guy with Feliz’ stuff in an important situation when your closer and setup guys are tired is smart baseball. I understand skepticism, but…
Plus, the Red Sox had done their homework and were not going to let FB’s strikes go by early in the count and were not going to swing at sliders outside the strike zone. Good learning experience for Derek.
@evan: for the whole season, how much is attendance up? just curious.
Let’s see wins over the Angels and the Red Sox in the middle of a pennant race sounds like a future ace of the staff to me
How ’bout some insurance runs, gentlemen? A big rally, mebbe.
Yeah, this score sounds disturbingly familliar…
Holland’s last 4 starts: 2 gems, 1 good, 1 not-so-good. Would you take that for every 4 starts he makes the rest of the way?
@Evan – Ever since you last mentioned Dominguez, I’ve wondered what happened to him.
Do you have a “Where is he serving fastfood now” update on him?
pretty ballsy play by byrd there.
ham hits a jack
Rally stated, leadoff man on.
Also, Feliz now warming in Rangers bullpen, so I guess he gets eighth and C.J. Wilson the ninth. If Feliz were to go 1-2-3 in the eighth, the Red Sox would be sending David Ortiz to lead off the ninth.
@Last: Great mystery. Nobody seems to know. Wasn’t close with anybody in the organization.
well looks like Feliz in the 8th
Ok look, come on. Why in the world do so many of our players have this TOS? Is this common with players of other teams? Is this doctor getting paid by the “Remove a Rib Foundation” or something?!?
Carona vs Cyborg starting now
Why waste O’Day this way??
CJ scares me in the 9th after last night throwing 27 pitches.
@scooper: attendance numbers
2008- 24,021 per game
2009- 27,512 per game
bob where u been
Ranger_Rick: I agree.
@jb: thanks!
@Scooper: Appears to be an approximate increase of 150,000 at this point. But I suspect that margin will grow if Rangers keep playing well and stay in the race. September attendance tailed off significantly last year. Don’t think that’s the case if Rangers are playing for a playoff spot.
Amen, Ranger. Even fresh he’s scary. If Feliz makes it out of the 8th in under 10 pitches he’s got to pitch the 9th.
Yep, Feliz for both 8th and 9th
TAG said that Wash said that he would pitch the 8th and, if he has no trouble, the 9th.
Kins working count really well and gets the hit
we could really use another run here.
But if O’Day pitches to only one batter tonight, you’re not maximizing your resources.
Am I the only one embarassed by the patches of dying grass at Rangers Ballpark? The stadium is sold-out, and yet Tom Hicks cant find room in his pocketbook to pay for field maintenance?
This isnt the first time I’ve noticed it, don’t get me wrong, but when you’re playing Boston in front of a packed house its just…..embarassing.
It looks like Tennison East out there right now.
@Ranger: and going the other way. that was a good decision by the Sox (having Pedroia cover 2nd), but Kins foiled it by going to the right side.
Nadel just said it was “absolutely shocking” that Kinsler went to right with that ball. gotta love honesty. It’s exactly what I, as well as I am sure most of us, was thinking.
Maybe since he pitched last night, trying to make him available for tomorrow as well.
Why wouldn’t Kins do this when he was batting lead-off?
you get the feeling just a single insurance run here will be huge
If Kinsler’s move to the 6-spot helped convince him to hit twice to the opposite field tonight, he should stay there.
No way Blalock gets a strike with Tea on deck
Or 4 insurance runs, apparently.
man hank swings at anything
worst possible guy up for that sitution. just tries to rake balls out of the dirt, and we need is a fly ball
@scooper- because he needed a kick in the pants???
OK one more like that but fair this time.
straighten it out, Hank!
@LittleO: That’s what I’m thinking!
well that’s one way to get a run
We’ll there’s one insurance run!
Can we get Chris Davis here by noon tomorrow? Please?
@Evan: Do you think the Rangers would have any interest in trading for Billy Wagner? Word is the Mets are shopping him…
Hank should might as well have been bunting
You got that right Rockwall Tim
@scooper- that’s what I like so much about the move. Gives him a kick, takes everyone’s mind off last night and sends a message to them that the manager, gm and president are a united front.
boy, taylor sure can’t swing the bat
Agreed, Tim. Blalock is simply wasting space. Why is this club so enamored with this guy?
happy time.
@littleO: except for Wash saying that it wasn’t his decision.
alan?
920 for the year Taylor your prize is hitting instructions courtesy of Rudy!!!!
I wonder if Feliz ever thought his nickname (at least on the blog) would be Happy?
@Beesley because theyre paying him. and they’re cheap.
Kind of cool that in a game Holland pitches he isn’t the one called for a balk
Great camera work
no idea
it fooled the cameraman
Good job by Murph…
that is why you run.
But you have to think at some point they could have sent him packing for some sort of return. Who cares if they had to sell low.
weired play
WOW…
that’s some gas!
sit down
nothing weird about that. sit. down.
Am I the only one who thinks Murphy needs to work on balls hit near the fence?
To me, he seems to misplay lots of hits near the wall – even the great play last night in the ninth came off his mistimed jump.
first pitch -97
second pitch -80
lowell’s about to sit down
He looks so effortless when throwing too
@scooper- not solely a Wash decision.
99 on a slow gun, that is some heat.
someone quoted major league the other day in this blog, but i’m gonna do it again… forget about the curveball, ricky, give ‘em the heater!
little loss of control there, bet Pappi backs off the plate a bit now.
high hear right here
dang
‘nother day at the office
i didnt think I could be more impressed but wow.
Kick some Sox a..
So smoooooootttttthhhhhhhh
Yessir Feliz!!!!!
feliz in the ninth seems also to be a baseball move………
I loved the smirk. That’s what you need.
That and the 100 mile an hour fastball.
That is the medicine we needed last night
I would be more inclined to let Feliz take care of the 9th and give C.J. a rest day.
Yeah, I don’t see Wash using Feliz tomorrow regardless, so let Wilson rest before we don’t have him OR Feliz tomorrow.
Instead of making him a starter they could make him a closer that always goes the 8th and 9th.
and the Red Sox will leave the park tonight saying, “At least we won’t have to face Feliz tomorrow!”
No one warming in the pen.
LEAVE HIM IN
okay now who wants to watch cj or frankie give you a heartattack when you can watch that night after night i will take feliz any day of the week and twice on sunday
feliz is young, but goes OG with the dip
@beesley: doing that, he couldn’t pitch back-to-back days.
A personal note of thanks to J.D. for that Teixeira trade…again.
any doubt he was going?
Honest question, are you more excited to watch Feliz or Holland pitch?
I mean, if you were given the option to watch one or the other, whom would you choose?
I think it’s a good question. Oh, and another Elvis SB. Awesome!
If Feliz hit 100 on that gun wonder just how fast it was.
7 SBs and not one double steal
Steal #7
@scooper: why not? A guy can do what he trains his body to do, in my eyes. Are we really to believe guys 100 years ago were better athletes than today’s guys?
I threw this out on one of the other posts:
How about having Frankie and Feliz alternate days closing. C.J. in the 8th (or let Feliz go 2 innings). Mix and match before that and in the 8th when C.J. isn’t available.
So is there some kind of bet between Elvis and Borbon for stolen bases?
I seem to recall a number of voices disapproving of moving Feliz into a RP role. Wonder if those still feel that way?
getting the bunt down here caps a great nite for julio
@Scooper – he only thought that’d be his nickname if he speaks English and Spanish.
Speed kills.
Have I said speed kills?
Very nice bunt… and Elvis was already running.
There is no way in hell Ian could ever do that.
bet julio runs to break the team record. that was a helpp of play backing up first
the future is so bright how often could you say that about the rangers the rangers I say again
@beesley: remember how young he is. You don’t want to screw up his arm.
beer guy, no I want him to start.
Uh, Ian, welcome to the 6th spot.
Elvis+Borbon… ElBo!!!
you just knew that Borbon would steal there.
How is it that our 3 and 4 guys are coming up and it’s Murphy and Byrd?! Not confidence building.
Come on Murph! Drive the nail in the coffin.
How about plenty of runs so Neftali can sit down and be ready for tomorrow!!!
@Evan – so how do you like the new lineup?
Like I said earlier… these guys run at will. Sox pitchers can’t even keep up with them much less Varitek.
I just don’t see Feliz being that effective in the majors a couple of times through a line-up. Could be wrong.
@beerguy: I want him to start. His secondary pitches look fine to me. He is more valuable as a starter, IMO.
Yep, I love Ian, but he is NOT a lead off hitter. Borbon is showing why.
…but the ‘pen for the rest of this year is fine.
@Scooper, obagain: Maybe in the long run, but perhaps not this year!
Hehe, you beat me to it
i love murph and byrd and all, but they are not 3-4 hitters.
Ok, Byrd really needs to do something here. Any hit will do
stupid bases loaded. Can’t steal with no base to go to.
this pitcher looks like he is doing a julio franco impression on the mound
I’m amazed he didn’t swing at those 2 pitches.
Borbon is showing everyone what a true lead-off hitter is all about.
You can steal home!
beer guy, agree on this year.
@Beesley how is Byrd not making you confident? He is hitting .281 for the year, and .333 with RISP. He may not hit here, but he has hit fairly well this year
@last: he could try to steal home.
Appreciate Murph stepping in for Josh in the 3-hole, but I think it’s safe to slide him back down.
@Jeffrey: I like Byrd a lot, and Murphy a lot. In the 6 & 7 spots. Not 3 and 4. Just kind of a sad state of the line-up to me.
@beesley gotcha
Walk in a run now.
and that was ball 4
922 man we are a great contact team
I rest my case
I get the feeling sometimes that these guys have made up their minds that they are swinging before the pitch is made.
@scooper/Beesly –
Yeah, but even varitek can throw it 7 inches!
(That sounded better when I anticipated that response before typing the original comment)
Time for Josh to knock one out here.
Don’t be alarmed, just building the drama for Hamilton.
okay, pick us up, ham
Appreciate Byrd stepping in the 4-hole, but I think it’s safe to slide him back down.
josh hamilton, ladies and gentlemen
Nice job Hammy
Borbon looked like he was limping!
Ok, I’ll take the single…. WooooHOOO
Heck, two more runs and we can let FF close
josh comes thru.
@scooper- just tired of running
whoa….whoa…whoa
That is not cool!
Holy crap that is scary
My wife would like to know how many times all of the players spit combined in an average baseball game. I figured this would be the place to get her answer
love that fire, ian.
did varitek throw the helmet at ian?
does this mean Feliz has to hit a Red Sox? those guys must be scared spitless right now.
@littleO: seriously, he looked like he was grimacing when he crossed home plate.
Whipped cream on the bat was a nice touch.
And that is not cool to hit Ian in the earhole
Appreciate Murph stepping in the 3-hole, but I think it’s safe to move Josh back up.
you hit somebody in the head should be an automatic ejection………..
@S.Arcasm: That is a scary thought!
vincente never hit you in the head…..it was always in the meaty part of the back
Specially since Kinsler already almost got hit in the head earlier
I agree… no way that is let go.
Jeez, thank goodness for the ear protector part of the helmet.
@Scooper: I also thought Borbon looked like he was limping a bit or something…
There will be some light-footed Red Sox in the batters’ box now.
I almost charged the mound! Had to catch myself before I ran into the TV.
doesnt the midget come up this inning? could get interesting and ugly
Good job Varitek flapping your gums at Ian, here’s a thought, why don’t you work on your throws to second before you puff your chest out again.
100 mph coming your way, Tek
@JustSaying: Who? …. oh yeah! That Padilla guy. Almost forgot about him.
Does Feliz hot someone? What are the odds? 1.5:1?
They better come out and nail if not tonight but tomrrow for sure.
If neftali is ejected for retaliation, will he still be available for tomorrow? Surely any suspension wouldn’t be handed out by game time tomorrow.
if I am the red sox I dont want feliz throwing at me, even the meaty part of the back.
well, Hank was sufficient for 2 months, but I’m ready to see how Chris Davis can do with his 2nd chance in the Bigs this season
Don’t you know Kins was ticked to have guys in front of him on the base pads. After watching that carosel of JB and EA.
Should have brought Mathis in save Feliz for tomorrow.
@scooper- just replayed it on slo-mo. Looked like he was kind of huffing from running but you might be right. Didn’t notice it at first
Nice one Buck, I felt the same way
@ryansdad: You tell him!
What was Varitek mouthing off about, anyway?
YES!!! Sit em down with the strikeouts
I think making someone look ridiculous at the plate and behind it is better revenge.
Bring me the head of Dustin Pedroia!
He was verbally defending his pitcher.
Good point by Barnett. The Kids won this one.
@Jeffrey: I’m with you. I want to see Chris Davis back in our lineup.
i’m still mad as hell at the head hit…….that is assault….pure and simple…….
Tomorrow a Sox goes down, tonight victory is the prize
Adios muchachos manana
happy save.
hello win column!
RANGERS WIN!!!!!
Gawd, that was nice!
Verbally defending his pitcher… there was nothing to defen on that one.
@All Let’s keep it right here for the time being before moving into post-game show.
I’ll just say this: The response the Rangers put forward after last night’s potentially devastating was impressive, to say the least.
Actually, I could use a better word than impressive if you can come up with one.
Hello win column, man I wish I could’ve said that last night, too!
Woo-hoo! Can’t wait to watch them give the whole Wild Card thing a shot again tomorrow afternoon!
does it seem to you like the Rangers are the better team on the field right now, even with last nights meltdown by FF?
How bout their response was a “statement” to their resiliency
evan, there are not enough words to describe this win.
Last year we would have started a long slide.
These guys come out and show boston they are not going away.
The really amazing thing about Feliz is his control. How many pitchers throw that hard, but don’t walk anyone?
@evan gnarly
Huge, huge win!
Holland, Feliz, Andrus, and Borbon put on a show. Oh yeah, Kinsler, Hamilton, Byrd and Young weren’t bad either.
Now, if Hank can find his bat (or take a pitch or two)……
Rangers bounce back again! To me this was probably the most impressive win of the year.
One question…why is o’day never given any consideration in the 9th? I know his stuff isn’t overpowering but he has great command and has arguably been a top 5 reliever in the AL this year. I just have a ton of confidence in him.
Great win!
@Evan – dominant. From DH to the running young ‘uns to Feliz’s heat. Dominant.
@Evan – Resilient
Absolutely amazing pitching tonight. Its a real pleasure to see this kind of pitching as a Ranger fan.
@Evan, It was larceny and Grand at that. 7 hits, what 6 runs and 8 stolen bases with Kins’ contribution. The Dynamic Duo Rides/Runs again
@Evan: I believe a synonym for impressive is “Cornerific”!
I loved it when Elvis stole 3rd, because Lowell was playing in for the bunt. That was just a great, heads-up play from the 20-year-old.
Great game. And leave CD in OK City until September. He needs to remember how hard it is to get and stay at this level.
Do you think A-Rod would like to play with these “kids”?
How bout Holland, Feliz and Hunter leading this rotation in ’11.
…and I DO NOT mean that we should bring him back!
I think you have seen the FUTURE and it is NOW.
How about Holland Feliz and Hunter leading this rotation in ’10?
oh scooper that’s like talking about an old date who you found out was a slut……..
No I let A$$-Rod play on this team.
i want feliz closing……….
UH.. meant No way…
@Evan, We do have the Inside Corner on PRIDE.
May not need a closer with Holland, Feliz, Hunter… LOL
i do miss davis defense…….he is truly superior to hank at first……..there’ve been numerous plays that hank didn’t make that he would have…….
Roy who?
Neftali really should have hit someone in the 9th.
Just watched Sportscenter highlights of Mets-Giants. David Wright got hit in the head, and Johan threw behind Sandoval and then hit Molina later in the game. He didn’t even get ejected. Even after both benches were warned after the Sandoval AB.
I was just thinking about his “24 kids” comment. Personally, I kinda like kids!
@Dan: evan said Angel Hernandez had a word with Feliz before the 9th started. You don’t hit someone after the ump has specifically said not to. The win was good enough tonight. I am taking bets on who gets hit tomorrow!
Hey, I love these kids!!
I say pedroia gets hit in his second AB.
What are the chances Ellsbury gets plunked first pitch tomorrow.
@Dan If Feliz didnt hit someone, my assumption is that he was told strongly not to, be it by Wash or a teamleader like Young/Byrd. I can’t imagine a rookie fireballer not doing his due diligence otherwise.
I agree obagain, go for Pedroia.
@obagain: I agree. It is too obvious if you hit someone in the 1st. You run the risk of getting ejected like Lackey. And Pedroia is a great choice. They hit our 2B, we hit theirs.
If I am pedroia I am glad feliz will not pitch tomorrow.
You have to retaliate, you just dont make it too obvious.
@evan: not too long ago, this would have been a record night! Oh, well!
If Kinsler has any say he’d probably like to see Pedroia be the target. I’d wait until they have the game in hand before getting too caught up in a beanball battle. He obviously didn’t hit Kinsler on purpose but it is certainly scary any time you get hit in the head and Kinsler nearly got hit in the face earlier in the game.
I’m still fired up…great win!
I say we chunk one in the dugout at Youkilis just for giggles tomorrow night.

Ryan’s Dad –
Thanks for a laugh!
LMAO… Sox are feeling the Happy heat
so do we bring vincente back to make the pitch……..????? geez guys vincente never hit anyone in the head……..or did he? i sure don’t remember him hitting someone in the head…….he had better control than that……..
geez i’m still spun up over that pitch…..nothing in baseball is worth being disabled for life or worse……..getting hit in the head SHOULD NEVER be “part” of the game…………
I want to see Nip bean Ortiz. Tall, skinny Nip vs. fat, oafish Ortiz if he charges.
@Ryan’s Dad – think they’ll trade Francona for RW straight up?
@Dan You are high. That’s a thought you entertain for about 2 seconds before sanity returns and you remember the nut kick that was last night’s final out. And I bet Gunter is right about being told by Wash and/or a team leader not to do it — that it wasn’t required. All that mattered tonight was a win. But tomorrow…oh tomorrow…some lucky Red Sox batter is taking one in the ribs (if they are lucky). I only wish it could be one of their obnoxious, frontrunning, bandwagoning “fans” from Irving(deep south Boston) who could be the recipient of said pitch. Vomit-inducing faux fans in our park should be flogged…
Not only Kins getting hit but Wright this afternoon and Kuroda of the Dodgers getting beaned by a line drive. Man that was really scary and they say he will be ok.
Thank God none of these guys today were seriously injured.
No past-game tonight?
no don’t hit them…..just beat their ass and drag them thru the faux grass at the ballpark……..sneding them out losing the series is big after the opening loss…….
and how can you talk about retaliation when you just cut your #2 pitcher because of bean balls…….c’mon folks was vincente cut for nothing? for no return? no high road?
Hope our boys can accomodate this gentleman:

second half for the sox is playing like a broken record. anybody want to step up and hit? where’s wake and dice k? i don’t want the wild card, i want the division. a few more pivotol series with the yanks should determine who’s boss. let’s go sox!
Evan, You have hungry cattle here waiting for any morsel of grain to devour. Can you pitch us a headline? We’re desperate here.
We need Rangers News Food.
Another thought: If Borbon keeps this up, I will owe him an apology. I said several times during the Halladay trade talks that I would be willing to trade Borbon and that I wasn’t sold on him. If tonight was a true glimpse of what he can become, I was definitely wrong.
Seriously, is there anything more sickening than the Red Sox attired douche screaming his ass off in Arlington? Look, I’m sure 10 or 15 out of the 20,000 Red Sox “fans” at the park have at the very least passed through greater Boston for a long weekend, but they are going to get smeared with that douche label. Sorry to that dozen. But cheering for a team that won 2 out of the last 5 championships doesn’t make you a fan, it makes you a sad, frontrunning, douche.
TRY NOT TO DIE LAUGHING WHEN YOU READ THIS.

Did anyone notice the way Holland worked with Ells on first base? He mixed up everything, his move to first, his delivery, the timing of delivery, etc… such that Ells was never comfortable getting a read and attempting a steal? Holland was clearly coached to work this way. Did anybody notice the Rangers employ the stolen base, the sacrifice, and hit and run plays? They were clearly coached to execute this way. Did anybody notice the Sox do any of the before mentioned? They were clearly not coached this way. In as much as “Terrycloth” views Sundays as “getaway days” anyway and puts out a “B” lineup at best, perhaps, he and coaches Farrell and Magadan, especially Magadan, should all take tomorrow off and watch the game from the stands. Watch a real coaching effort from Ron Washington.. Perhaps pick up a pointer here and there. Hand the bubble gum over to Millsie and take a break. The stress on Tito’s face lately has never been more evident during his tenure with the Sox. If what he says about his player’s needing a break every now and then, the same is true for the coaches. The whole team is stressing and pressing. After stealing the game the way we did last night, we should have come out firing on all cylinders against a guy with medicore stuff and a 5+ ERA. Instead, for the umpteenth time this year, we come out with our collective “I don’t give a _ _ _ _ gameface” and turn a nobody pitcher into Cy Young. With only 46 games left to play, this team needs to start finding an identity as a competitior, which is next to impossible given the constant chaos created by the ever shifting roster and lineup. Take a day off Tito! You deserve a break.
I was glad to see the draw tonight at TBPIA.
48,000+ and 41,000+ last night. Those are the
crowds this team deserves. They will get 40,000+ tomorrow, with any luck.
Evan, I love you man, but how could you have advocated trading Feliz for Halladay? Feliz is the most exciting thing to happen to TX baseball in a long time!
Funny post Ryan’s Dad.
That Derek Holland is a nobody pitcher.
@ryan very funny to see such pain from those ‘englanders………
@fluaggie – with mediocre stuff no less – lol – that’s what happens when you don’t watch the freaking game – sorry, channeling the GAC Daddy for a second, ooh, that was painful
Funny that 1 week of paying attention would have told you that this wasn’t a “nobody” pitcher. The self-involvment of these fans are criminal. I say about the 4th inning tomorrow all the Ranger fans slip out the door and let’s lock the gates and set the BPiA on fire. Would be worth it.
sorta reminds me of a giants game where dodger fans come and infiltrate…….c,mon now you have to constantly remind them tomorrow of their catcher’s second game of 8 stolen bases….of big poppi wiffing from feliz……..you have to make them suffer……make them feel that they’re just not welcome…………
Best shirt I saw tonight: “B is for BANDWAGON”
Jack Daddy says nice game by Rangers. Nicer game by Dutch, who he’s been hyping since August 2008, when he saw him with own eyes and fell madly in love. Jack Daddy will be sitting on the 3rd row tomorrow when the over-rated Midget takes one in the ribs from Guardado.
Evan – I believe the words is balls.
For whoever asked in this thread:
AA 1b/RF Mitch Moreland out for the year with a broken foot after a HBP on Thursday.
