Weekend In Review

It was a big weekend at InsideCorner, mostly because Evan dished the dirt on the five worst Rangers teammates he’s covered. But there was also something about a playoff chase and a big series against Boston that created quite a buzz.

The Rangers managed to win their series by taking two of three from the Red Sox despite having to put their biggest power threat on the DL. And just when the news that Ian Kinsler would no longer be out — or in the leadoff spot — after a hamstring injury had hampered him, the disabled list claimed another Ranger, as catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will miss at least two weeks with shoulder problems.

The Rangers endured another tough blow when Frankie Francisco imploded in the 9th inning on Friday night and the Rangers lost a winnable game 8-4. But 24 hours later, Kinsler homered in his first at bat back and took a fastball off the ear in the 8th inning with the game already out of hand. Although he was the third player of the day to take a ball on the head, he popped up quickly and even stayed in the game, and the incident seemed to fire up the team enough to finish off the series with a win Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers could finish off a productive weekend by coming to terms with 1st rounder Matt Purke, who is still unsigned. Purke would add to an already impressive stable of young arms that includes Derek Holland, Tommy Hunter, Martin Perez, and Neftali Feliz, and if he gets a contract by 11 p.m. tonight, Mike Hindman might be even more giggly than he already is.

Who are the five? I couldn’t find that list in Evan’s post.

  • fluaggie

I couldn’t either and I was very curious.

Evan, who are the five most deserving of a Huntsville donkey punch?

  • Ryan Jones

The list should be at the end of the post(it is for me at least) but I’ve heard from multiple people that the link isn’t working for them. So here’s the full list:

No. 5 Brad Fullmer: Creepily intense guy wasn’t very approachable to teammates or media. Biggest hit he had during 2004 season was when he drove his car through the metal entrance gate to the tunnel underneath the stadium. After trade to San Diego fell through because of his knee problems, he wasn’t even around the club for the final two months.

No. 4 Juan Dominguez: Teammates had no idea what to make of the guy, who trashed his hotel room once after being sent down and went AWOL on another occasion. Earned nickname “The Savage.” Called in sick for scheduled start at Los Angeles in late September, 2004 with the bullpen at less than full strength. Was a nice touch.

No. 3 Chad Curtis: Didn’t just proselytize, also acted as censor in clubhouse. It led to near fisticuffs with Royce Clayton because of his objections “The Thong Song” being played on clubhouse sound system. He wouldn’t make it a week under the current music mix.

No. 2 Esteban Loaiza: Once discovered washing his car in the Ballpark garage. During a game. Regular tardiness and absent-mindedness nearly led to a team revolt in 2000 before he was traded to Toronto. But he never put any teammates in harm’s way. And he did leave the Rangers with an enduring contribution; trading him resulted in acquisition of Michael Young.

No. 1 Vicente Padilla: No player in the last 13 years has so alienated teammates as Padilla. His penchant for throwing at hitters and giving up on games showed no respect or care for teammates. He regularly left teammates to pay for his transgressions, then often declined to speak about situations, making teammates answer questions for him, too. Ignored club’s June warning about being a good teammate and ultimately pushed a club in a pennant race to discard one of its most more talented arms.

couldn’t find either. I was anxiously looking for it, as that would be a great read. Here is my guess:

    1. Padilla,
    2. Chad Curtis
    3. Sidney Ponson
    4. alex rodriguez
    5. No guess

Kevin Brown pre-dated his arrival in town. Kenny could be a jerk, but never heard he was bad teammate. Teixeira was selfish, but again, don’t think he was bad teammate.

Great list! Too bad Evan wasn’t around back in the ’70s when you had players going into trances, managers getting sucker-punched by players, and managers who only stuck around for a couple of games. (Yes, all these things actually did happen to the Rangers.)

  • Ryan Jones

    @ Jack Daddy

2 for 5 isn’t bad. You’re like the Ted Williams of InsideCorner.

  • Gaylord Focker Perry

Good list Jack. If you cut Ponson he’d bleed 100 proof. ARod would bleed douche. Padilla wouldn’t bleed at all (fairly certain he’s the spawn of Satan). On the opposite end of the spectrum, Christian Chad Curtis will kill you if he deems your music to be offensive…

    totally forgot about fullmer.

i remember the dominguez hotel incident and calling in sick that game, but never appreciated he was that bad. of coure, he wasn’t here long.

also should have thought of loaiza. the guy was a tool.

i can’t imagine canseco was a very good teammate.

  • JustSaying

    1. A-fraud me and 24 kids while i juice up.
    2. Chad Curtis I’m certain if i was there there would have been a daily fight….clayton was reserved.
    3. Chan Ho just thinking of such horrible performance with such a ridiculous salary would make any player go crazy……
    4. Buck Showalter what an arrogant ass who never seemed to be able to motivate his team……..
i left ponson and vincente off because i just don’t think rangers management ever had a clue how to manage them…good solid church boys is their specialty……but winning franchises don’t dfa their #2 and get nothing in return……just wondering has that ever happened before…..dfa’ing your #2 in the middle of a pennant race?
