We all love to play manager, don’t we?
OK, here is your chance. Let’s assume the Rangers don’t do the seemingly unthinkable; in other words OF Julio Borbon remains on the roster even if RHP Jason Grilli is activated today. It gives you these outfield/DH options for the three-game series against Tampa Bay:
Marlon Byrd
Julio Borbon (left-handed hitter)
Nelson Cruz
Josh Hamilton (left-handed hitter)
Andruw Jones
David Murphy (left-handed hitter)
You face a left-hander Friday and another lefty on Sunday. You are playing on artificial turf. You have to have a cleanup hitter from this group. So, what’s your outfield/DH alignment for the weekend and why? And in what spots in the lineup do you hit these fellas?
Oh, and you better have an explanation why. Us Inglorious Basterds from the media are going to want to know why you are doing what you are doing for each particular game.
I think this is simple..Borbon leadsoff against righties and Andrus against lefties
Clearly Murphy is the odd man out. Actually like that lineup to. Tired of the shifting lineups and whats up with Borbon in the field thought he was supposed to move Josh to RF?
Borbon/Andrus (righties/lefties)
Young
Kinsler
Hamilton
Cruz
Bryd
Blalock
Tea/Pudge
Andrus/Borbon
Borbon, in CF, leads off for me, period, always. Cruz in RF and Hamilton in LF. DH depends on platoons and history against a pitcher.
If I’m manager, it stays that way, every day, all the time, barring injuries and need for rest.
Blalock is DFA’ed and Davis is brought back up to play 1B.
Byrd is my primary DH right now, with Murphy my 4th OF. Jones is bat off bench.
Oh, did I mentioned that Blalock is DFA’ed?
Ok, I’ll give it a shot:
Fri vs. Kazmir-
Julio lf- leading off,(time to see if he can do it v. lefties)
Byrd cf – clean-up
Hamilton rf – 5th
Cruz dh – 6th
This also marks the beginning of Kinsler in the 3 spot v lefties
Sat vs. Garza-
Julio dh – lead off
Josh rf – 3rd
Byrd cf – 4th
Murphy lf – 5th This is where it gets tricky, surely you don’t want to sit Cruz, but Murphy is obviously the play here. Not playing Murphy means Hank in the 5 spot, and 4 rh’s in a row in the bottom of the line up.
Sun vs Price-
I am starting to sense the conundrum Wash is going to have by now. But at this point, the best line up is going to require some outside the box thinking.
1.Borbon – lf
2.Young – 3b
3.Kinsler – 2b
4.Byrd – cf
5.Hamilton – rf
6.Cruz – dh
7.Jones – 1b
8.Teagarden – c
9.Elvis – ss
It is also becoming apparent, unless some DL creativity is used, Murphy is going to be the odd man out.
I say you put Andruw on the DL with some mystery injury when you activate Grilli. I don’t want to get rid of him now, because the rosters expand in less than 2 weeks. You’ve got to go with the hot hands. LF-Borbon, CF-Byrd, RF-Hamilton, DH-Cruz/Murphy. At least one of the games on turf, put Murphy in RF & have Hamilton DH. I think Hank needs at least one day off this series. Why can’t Pudge play 1st? He played there some last year with Detroit, and I think he would be just fine. My lineup:
-Borbon
-Young
-Hamilton
-Kinsler
-Byrd
-Cruz/Murphy
-Blalock/Pudge
-Teagarden/Pudge
-Andrus
Just my thoughts. I know Borbon won’t stay this hot forever, but you’ve got to ride the hot hand right now.
Kinsler’s TURF BA is lower than Whale Dung. Start Vizquel at least once like against a Righty. Borbon starts until he proves he can’t handle it. Lead him off, Bunt him and run him if he makes it to 1st. Sit Murphy and Hamilton. They are back to bad habits.
Byrd Flies! Cruz vs Lefties. I would always put Borbon in LF. His arm and defense is suspect, as much as his bat is Happy. The man makes things go on the basepads.
Jones to the dl with hamstring, he must have an injury because he cant run to first.
Fri.
Julio Borbon (left-handed hitter)leadoff until he fails. Left field.
Nelson Cruz 4th, a confidence builder Right field.
Byrd 5th Center
Josh Hamilton (left-handed hitter) 3rd, this is his spot. DH
Andruw Jones DL
David Murphy (left-handed hitter)Bench on friday.
Sat.
Borbon, LF again he hits leadoff until he shows he cant.
Hamilton CF 3rd. It is a comfort thing.
Byrd Gets a day off, this could change if he has a great game on friday, I believe in riding the hot hitters.
cruz 5th, RF could be moved to 6th to put hank in between for lefty righty change.
Murphy 7th,LF In a little slump by his standards so take some pressure off him.
Sun.
Borbon, DH broken record.
Murphy 7th left, wash will probably sit either murph or borbon here.
Byrd 3rd CF, want to try something different.
cruz 5th RF
Hamilton gets a day off.
Hamilton, Cruz, Byrd, and Jones v. lefties.
Borbon, Hamilton, Cruz, Murphy and Byrd v. righties. Play Murphy at 1st. Last night’s outburst from Hank was an isolated instance. I would even play Jones over him at 1st v. lefties. I can’t believe i just typed that.
Tom B,
Kinsler’s turf BA? They’ve played 3 games on turf this year…..
The answer is simple:
Play them all in the outfeild at the same time; having six outfeilders would provide much improved coverage over a measly three outfeilders. Also, since there’s three left handed-hitters and three right-handed hitters, we can send them up two at a time, one on each side of the plate. It will be near impossible to get a pitch through!
Wash is such a horrible manager for not doing this already.
methinks jesse is on to something (or on something)
You guys that take Byrd out of the lineup or put him at DH must simply not really watch the games. That is just dumb.
Platoon Borbon and Byrd in CF. I don’t see why Byrd is viewed as an everday must-start, he has the lowest OBP between him, borbon, cruz and murphy. Cruz and Hamilton play everyday in LF and RF. Platoon Murphy and Jones at DH.
Evan, I’m amazed by the lack of outrage in the media that Blalock is playing everyday. The guy has a .278 OBP!! He has to be moved to the bench. Can a platoon of Murphy/Jones work at 1B? I realize we’d take a hit defensively but it would have to be worth it. Or just bring up Chris Davis, he can’t be much worse.
Byrd, Cruz and Hamilton in the outfield. Borbon DH. This should be the “base” package.
Borbon
Young
Hamilton
Cruz
Kinsler
Byrd
Blalock
Teagarden
Andrus
You’ve got a chance to get Borbon some invaluable experience. Keep putting him out there until he shows he CAN’T handle it. Specially if we keep putting people out there who have already shown they can’t handle it but they’re older so we’re nicer to them or something.
Throw in a Murphy for Cruz/Byrd every now and then and let’s rock and roll.
NO MORE ANDREW JONES.
Sorry, Andruw
LHB are hitting better vs Kazmir than RHB. So on Fri I go Borbon DH with Cruz, Hamilton and Byrd in the OF. On Sat I sit Byrd with Murphy, Hamilton and Cruz in the OF. Borbon at DH. Sunday vs Price, Borbon sits, Aj at DH, Hamilton, Cruz and Byrd in the OF.
You bat Julio leadoff and play LF, Hamilton 3rd playing RF, Byrd 6th playing CF, and Cruz DH’ing hitting cleanup. Your lineup then is:
Julio
Mike
Hamilton
Cruz
Kinsler
Byrd
blalock
Teagarden
Elvis
@ Chad –
.
In 38 career games, Kinsler is batting .184 on artificial turf. But, the average is .276 in 7 games at Tropicana.
Borbon in CF and leading off every day.
Cruz/Hamilton split time at DH/RF. Both play every day.
Byrd/Murphy split time in LF. Byrd gets more time this series because of the LH starting pitching.
That won’t happen… but that’s what I’d do.
Wash wants to rest Byrd at least one game in TB, so play Borbon in center two games and Byrd one, with Borbon in left when Byrd is in center. Bench Jones, or release him. Rotate Hamilton and Cruz in right and DH. DH Byrd one game, Hamilton one game and Cruz one game.
Game 1
c- Borbon
l-Murphy
r-Cruz
dh-Hamilton
Game 2
c-Byrd
l-Borbon
r-Hamilton
dh-Cruz
Game 3
c-Borbon
l-Murphy
r-Cruz
dh-Byrd
That should give Byrd all the rest he needs the rest of the season, and puts Borbon on the field — and in center — where he belongs. I haven’t looked at the pitching matchups, but I’d want to maximize Borbon, give Byrd some rest, use Hamilton and Cruz as a RF-DH combo and spot Murphy in left when Byrd or Borbon aren’t there.
Friday:
Borbon LF
Byrd CF
Cruz RF
Hammy DH
Saturday
Borbon LF
Hammy CF
Cruz RF
Murphy DH
Sunday
Borbon LF
Byrd CF
Cruz RF
Jones DH
1. I want Hammy off the turd for 2 of these 3 games and want him to take one whole day off (the day after night game) since he’s played every day since his return.
2. I want Borbon playing every day while he’s unstoppable right now. If he looks horrible Friday and/or Saturday, I’d consider giving him off Sunday.
3. I think Byrd needs 1 day off and Murphy 2 (he really looks gassed to me).
4. I would have played Jones Sunday in field and DH’d Cruz, but Jones’ bloated corpse is useless in OF.
As I said last night, with Borobon a regular, this offense has swung to far lefthanded. I predict either Murphy or Davis is traded this winter for a Righthanded bat.
My suggestion – Davis for Garret Atkins. A change of scenery for both. Atkins can be the back up at 1B, 3B, LF and the DH vs. Lefties. Would be a terrific trade.
chadb,
38 games is not that many, and that is a bit of an abberation. Kinsler is an extreme fly ball hitter, so it really doesn’t matter what surface he’s playing on. If he had knee or leg problems of some kind, then I would think that might have something to do with it. There’s only 3 parks with turf anymore, and they all have had pretty decent pitching staffs the last few years. That has more to do with it than the field surface.
I agree–he’s popping everything up this year so it shouldnt matter.
Borbon CF/DH
Hamilton LF
Cruz RF
Byrd DH/CF
maybe start Muph/Jones against Kazmir and you could use Borbon to pinch run later on
I am posting this stand-alone so Evan, et al sees it:
“As I said last night, with Borbon a regular, this offense has swung to far lefthanded. I predict either Murphy or Davis is traded this winter for a Righthanded bat.
My suggestion – Davis for Garret Atkins. A change of scenery for both. Atkins can be the back-up at 1B, 3B, LF and the DH vs. Lefties. Would be a terrific trade.”
Evan – please pass this along to JD. This trade make sense on so many fronts. Atkins is more expensive and will be a F.A. soon, but he fits the “go for it” next year model. He is a F.A. after next year, so you could offer arb and get back a draft pick. I would really look hard to pursue this trade. Looking at his career numbers, this season has to be an aberration.
correction – I don’t DH Jones on Sunday. I DH Pudge. I sit Jones until 9/1. Play him at 1B if you want to (though I predict his D costs us a run). He nearly cost us the Houston game and is the reason why Hollan didn’t get the win (yes, Holland gave up the 3 run shot to Berkman, but Jones misplayed a ball earlier that cost a run).
@Jack-
I’m digging the Atkins trade. 2 things, 1.I think it would take more than just Davis, but would be willing to do that; 2. there is no way a guy like Atkins passes through waivers, is there?
@ Jack Daddy –
Wasnt sure if you saw last night–the new Rangers podcast is being recorded Sunday night.
Davis for Atkins? Thats a crazy trade. You give up multiple years of control on a young player with potential for one year of a $7 million below avg 3rd baseman? Really? Not only has Atkins been terrible this year (.652 OPS) but he wasn’t good in 2008 (.780 OPS). In Coors Field!
For all Davis’ struggles this year, his 2009 OPS with the rangers is still better than atkins’ (.671 vs .652). Add in that Davis is making $400K this year and this trade makes zero sense.
Byrd – LF
Hamilton – CF
Cruz – RF
Bourbon – DH
EVERY GAME.
You play the hot hand, I hate how Washington refuses to adopt this philosophy
Byrd/Hamilton/Cruz play every game.
Borbon plays against Kazmir and Garza
Jones is 1B against Kazmir and Price
vs lefty cf Hamilton rf cruz lf byrd
1b jones dh borbon
Anything i can do to get blalock off the field i would do and anything i could do to insure borbon is in the lineup i do…..his speed just is SO disruptive
vs righty cf hamilton rf cruz lf murphy
1b jones dh borbon
same logic as above but get murphy in as much as possible vs righty…….
Jared – Davis has had 1 good half season. Atkins had 3 very good years before last year and was ok this year. This year has been a waste, just as Davis’ has. I understand the salary issue, and that’s tough to swallow. But that is the only thing, imo, that gets this done straight up. I think if salaries were apples to apples, there is no way Davis would bring you Atkins. Right now, Davis has virtually no value. He was guy that was on a record strike out pace, can play 1 position and many feel he’s only adequate at that position. My point was we have gotten way too far left handed and we need a righty that can play the OF and DH, plus this guy can spell MY at 3B and fill in at 1B if Smoak isn’t ready. Yes, Atkins has been horible this year (1 out of 5 yrs). But Davis has been historically bad (1/2 his ML career). But that’s just me. I’m a big CD fan, I just think we need to make a move and I don’t think Murphy would bring much of anything in a trade.
Keith – I meant a winter trade.
chadb – i saw that. Thanks!
Here are Atkins #s in his 4 full seasons:
HR AVG OBP SLG
2008 21 0.2864 0.3283 0.4517
2007 25 0.3008 0.3670 0.4860
2006 29 0.3289 0.4086 0.5565
2005 13 0.2871 0.3473 0.4258
To expect Davis to exceed those #s (other than HR) is pretty optimistic. In his season where he wasn’t “good” as you say, he hit .286 with 21 HRs. I’ll take that.
@Jack: do you have his UZR ratings? LOL
Jack Daddy – I understand the concern over being “too far lefthanded”, but i disagree on a couple of other points. First, what is your basis for saying Davis’ first half is worst than Atkins’? Davis had a higher OPS, more HR’s and RBI, and a higher UZR/150 at 1B. The strikeouts are bad, but they dont overcome all the other advantages.
Secondly, it is not fair to say Davis only had 1 good half, that would be discounting his entire minor league career. Considering his minor league OPS is roughly .950, it is reasonable to expect him to hit comparably in the majors.
Atkins is a declining player, as shown by the stats you’ve posted. He was good in 2007, had below avg #’s in 2008, and was terrible in 2009 in an extreme hitters park. Why should we expect him to become good again? I would argue that Chris Davis is already an equal player to Atkins and has enormous potential at a significantly lower cost.
Anyone know how well Borbon was doing against lefties in the minors?
Friday against a Lefty
Kinsler – 2B (He’s my leadoff against Lefties always, swinging the bat well right now)
Young – 3B (Duh)
Hamilton – RF
Cruz – DH (Don’t want Nellie too much in the field until sure he’s 100%)
Byrd – CF (as well as he’s playing the field I want him in Center)
Pudge – 1B (Right handed bat against the lefty, not much drop from Hank on D, if any)
Teagarden – C
Borbon – LF (I keep him in Left all year, let the kid get comfortable, Center is next year)
Elvis -SS – (I want these two back to back always, love the speed combo and the small ball opportunities, plus gives Kins and Young more RBI chances as pitchers have to be more careful if either of these guys are on base)
Saturday against a Righty
Borbon – LF
Young – 3B
Hamilton – DH (give his legs a break from the Turf)
Murphy – RF (give Nellie a day off after just returning from DL)
Byrd – CF (as well as he’s playing the field I want him in Center)
Hammer – 1B (lefty against the righty)
Pudge – C
Vizquel – 2B (Give Kins a day off)
Elvis – SS
Sunday against a Lefty
Kinsler – 2B
Young – 3B
Hamilton – RF
Cruz – DH
Byrd – CF (as well as he’s playing the field I want him in Center)
Hammer – 1B (see if his current hot streak continues)
Teagarden – C
Borbon – LF
Elvis – SS
I would love to give Borbon a day off but he is such a catalyst right now I can’t do it.
The last thing I want to see happen is selective hitting with Borbon. Hit him against lefties. He’s not power like others because he can bunt his way on.
Borbon leads off all games
Byrd hit 3 in all games
Cruz hit 4 in games 1 and 3
Hammy hit 5 in 2 of 3.
Murphy hit 4 in game 2 in RF. Possibly 3 if Cruz needs a day due to the turf.
Jones would share DH with Murphy and spell Hammy for his day off.
I hate it when the whole order changes and people sit just because it’s a lefty pitching. Play the hot hand.
Well, we all watch the games, and therefore collectively, we are about as accountable as “eyewitnesses” to a crime, who actually saw it take place but, when interviewed, give honest, but differing descriptions of what happened. So, in that spirit, here is what I would do, and why:
First, the hot hand always plays (with a hot hand being a player with a combined .300+ BA for at least 3 consecutive games or longer).
Second, it takes 9 consecutive bad at bats to lose a “hot hand” immediately, but 3-4 games of .200 BA or less combined to qualify as cold.
Third, it takes 2 days missed to return to a neutral state (neither hot nor cold).
BA’s between these two criteria qualify a player as neutral.
Right now, the “hot hands” are Borbon, Byrd, Young, and Hamilton. Kinsler’s close. Elvis is close. Teagarden is cold. Jones is cold. Murphy is nuetral, Blalock is cold, but warming up to near neutral. Cruz and Pudge don’t have enough at bats to decide a trend, so become nuetral by default.
After those who qualify to play based on offensive performance are grouped, then you consider the defensive contributions to break ties or to create a more sound defense.
My lineup for all three games would be this, if all things stay the same (obviously performance would change who is hot/cold/neutral day to day, so the lineup would reflect that. For example, if Borbon goes “ofer” in his next two games, he’s out, etc)
Leading off, at DH is Borbon.
Batting second, at SS is Elvis Andrus.
Batting third, at CF is Hamilton.
Batting fourth, at 3B is Young.
Batting fifth, at LF is Byrd.
Batting sixth, at 2B is Kinsler.
Batting seventh, at RF is Cruz.
Batting eighth, at 1B is Blalock.
Batting ninth, at C is Pudge.
At the first hint of trouble, or to protect Cruz or Byrd, insert Murphy in their place as late inning counter to right handed relievers. Insert AJ at first in similar situations. Stop playing Teagarden so much. In fact Pudge should play 2 to 1 over him.
Vizquel is always ready and capable for other infield positions. We need to pinch hit more often overall, as well.
The havoc that can be created by Borbon and Andrus is too profound to wait for by batting Elvis last. Michael Young is a constant threat to hit into a DP, where Hamilton is less so due to speed. This could bring up many instances where Michael is up with no one on first, but men in scoring position, he has the most extra base hits on the team, and the highest BA overall.
Teagarden is a liability big time offensively. Let’s slow his learning curve a bit. Cruz and Hamilton have arms that can throw people out even on deep balls. Murphy’s arm is better than Byrd’s, while Byrd’s range is better. Byrd should only play left. Hamilton can get to any ball Byrd can in center and has a far superior arm. The throw from left is generally a shorter one. Cruz should always play right. Murphy should spell Cruz and Byrd, with Byrd moving to center only when Hambone needs a break.
Andruw Jones could spell Blalock, but always be a situational PH.
Well, there you have it. Guaranteed sweep of the Rays (if the pitching holds).
And I just wanted to add that although Blalock is “Blalocked” into swinging for the fences it seems, he plays first well, and he’s paid a lot of dues. If we have to send someone down, or DL them, in order to keep Borbon, let it be Jones. I admire his plate discipline, but even if he walks, he walks alone (meaning there is not enough of this throughout the lineup where it makes a huge difference).
In September, bring up Davis and platoon him with Hank. And face it guys, Murphy is the odd man out here. And can we please not see any more of Guardado? Fiery and jovial and knowledgeable though he is, he is batting practice if he isn’t getting calls, or painting the corners.
Borbon leads off all games.
hammy plays 2 of 3 (5 spot)
cruz plays 2 of 3 (4 spot unless the k’s keep coming)
murphy and Jones would split DH and murphy would play the outfield when resting cruz or hammy.
Byrd plays all 3 in the 3 spot.
play who’s hot. no matter who’s the pitcher.
@jared – all fair points. I’m a believer in an Atkins rebound next year and am very concerned that Davis won’t be able to counter-adjust to the adjustments made by pitchers against him, but I definitely hear you on the salary angle.
Play this out – is there a RH bat that you would target and what would you offer up? I don’t think we can roll into next year with this. We have one of the lowest “platoon advantages” in baseball and it will get worse next year. If we don’t make a trade, I believe we may have to over-pay to keep Byrd. Paying Atkins $5MM next year (he won’t get more than that in arb, and probably less) is less painful than paying bird $30MM over 4.
Brad Hawpe would be nice, but it would rape the system.
Let’s not trade Davis until we know Smoak is better HERE. Davis’ glove is supposedly better than Smoak and we aren’t sure Smoak starts the year here. But trades don’t matter at this point anyway…
Friday:
DH Byrd
RF Cruz
CF Hamilton
LF Borbon
Saturday:
DH Cruz
RF Hamilton
CF Borbon
LF Murphy
Sunday
DH Borbon
RF Cruz
CF Hamilton
LF Byrd
Any why is this a question..Eyre goes down for Grilli, don’t you think?
Fri – vs Kaz
CF – Byrd
LF – Murph
RF – Hamilton
DH – Cruz
Sat – vs Garza
CF – Hamilton
RF – Cruz
LF – Byrd
DH – Bourbon
Sun – vs Price
same as saturday. Why? Garza and Price are known for their fastballs and I want our power hitters to tee off on them, add bourbon for speed on the bags and rbi situations. Murph will be your #1 PH option on Saturday and Sunday, and, just for fun, you can platoon Hank/AJ at first, although it looks like Hank is getting his swing back….
Can you believe we have to cheer for the Yankees AGAIN?! Ugh. I’m gonna be sick….
I’d take Jones off the list, let Kinsler lead-off against the lefties since he’s been doing decent of late, otherwise Borbon all the way… Borbon and Cruz can share the DH.
For giggles, here’s my lineup come September…
1)Borbon LF/DH – L
2)Young 3B – R
3)Hamilton RF – L
4)Cruz DH/LF – R
5)Kinsler 2B – R
6)Davis 1B – L
7)Byrd CF – R
8)Teagarden/Pudge/Salty C – R/R/S
9)Andrus SS – R
byrd
kinsler
young
hambone
pudge
elvis
borbon
murphy
cruz
Obviously, you are all flawed in that no one is playing any hunches — how do you expect to be as successful as Wash if you never go with your gut!?! LOL — I know that’s a sore subject for many of you.
Can’t say I’ve studied the batter-pitcher match-ups enough to put together anything as far as a full line-up…busy getting ready to get on a plane again. Sitting here in the Atlanta airport, I have a few ideas.
Borbon is really hot right now…needs to be in the line-up 2 of the 3 games, and his young legs could handle Sat night-Sun afternoon, so I say let’s see what he can do against a lefty in the finale…leave him at the top and bat Kins 6th…both are thriving in those spots — Kins is my favorite, but until he stops popping up so much, I’d tell him he’s not getting to the top of the order again.
Vizquel can play 2nd on Saturday, but I have a “hunch” Wash is thinking Young needs a day off more than Kinsler, so Omar will instead play 3rd and bat 2nd. Wash seemed to be of a mind to run Hank out there again on Friday to see if he can stay hot, so he’ll play instead on Jones — Andruw can play 1B on Sunday.
A couple of good points were made above — it’s time to lead-off Andrus against lefties. He’s ready for the challenge…tonight would be a good opportunity. And if Young sits on Saturday, put Andrus in the 2-hole instead of Vizquel. I’d really like to see Borbon and Andrus causing havoc again.
I don’t think folks realize, however, how concerned the Rangers are about Borbon’s throwing. He is a liability anywhere but left field. I read here somewhere that his grip and arm position is just ridiculously bad, and as a result, the ball could end up anywhere on a long throw. Hopefully, Pettis is getting that straightened out. This is constraining some of the things Wash can do with his outfield alignment, since Borbon and Murphy are both LHBs and best used in left. Saturday night, one of them probably should play RF, and put Hamilton in CF…but I think it will more likely be Cruz in right. Byrd should take that night off, and Murphy can DH to stay off the turf.
Jack, I think Byrd’s going to want GMJ money next yr, and might get it from somebody — although probably for 3-4 yrs instead of 5. Maybe it will be closer to your figure, but the Rangers obviously won’t be in the running at either of those amounts.
What do you think Hamilton is going to cost? Will MLB let us do a long-term deal with him? How about $60M for 5 yrs…if he can continue his turn-around during these last 6 weeks?
Jack – I dont know if I understand your concern about too much lefty hitting in the future. My 2010 lineup would be Borbon, Young, Hamilton, Cruz, Kinsler, Davis, Smoak Andrus and Salty. Thats 4RH, 3LH, and 2 swith hitters. Pretty balanced.
A more interesting question though, why would we re-sign Byrd? I don’t see where he plays. Borbon can play CF, we have plenty of outfielders with Murphy as our 4th. Davis/Smoak take up the DH spot. I say we let Marlon walk, take the pick and reinvest the savings in a rehabbing starter such as Webb or Sheets and hope they recover.
It won’t be too long before you’ll start seeing more of a 50/50 split in the Teagarden/Pudge platoon, especially if Teagarden continues to bat poorly.
Club needs to ride Borbon as long as it can. The dude will eventually cool off, but no need to douse the flames ourselves. It’s about time to give Hamilton and Byrd some days off from playing the field. Borbon can play the field on those days while Hamilton/Byrd handle DH.
Murphy seems like the odd man out unless he gets work at 1B. I hate this, because Murph has shown he can be a valuable piece. For now, though, selectively play him against righties and as a lefty pinch hitter. I hope he can do more with fewer at-bats.
1B remains a quandry to me. Don’t think there’s much choice other than to ride Blalock until September. Then bring Davis up to help the team while giving Blalock some needed rest, both physically and mentally. Who knows, Blalock might be rested and good to go for the postseason, should we get there.
On the pitching side, Grilli should replace Jennings in that role. Unless Jennings can recapture what he did the first three months of the season, I think you have to bury him in long, long relief (or give his spot in the pen to McCarthy, if his rehab goes well). Guardado is also a concern, but if you can keep him without keeping a better arm out of the bullpen, I say keep him around for times when the game is out of hand (one way or another). The starters and the back end of the bullpen seem pretty well set to me.
Love this baseball talk! I can wait to talk about the Rangers’ neighbors for a while.
All that I can say is that I would not want Ron Washington’s job. It is much more fun to create imaginary line-ups than to have to actually fill in the official line-up card every game.
@dude – I don’t think we’ll offer a long term deal to Hammy in the next 12 months. I’m very curious to see what the two sides would put forward in an arbitration.
@jared – I don’t think Borbon can play CF in this ballpark with that arm. I knew it was weak from watching him in Frisco last year, but didn’t realize it was this week and innacurate. While I think Bascik is a blow hard, to some degree, he knows a player’s skills and says Borbon’s arm is a 1 on a 1-5 scale.
I don’t think our STARTING lineup is too left. But with 2 of your starting OFs lefthanded (Hammy and Borbon) and your starting DH lefthand, I don’t think you want you’re 4th OF and back up DH to also be lefthanded (Murphy)
@jared – I will say this – after reading the CD interview on DMN today, I am encouraged and as hopeful regarding him as I’ve been in a long time. Very eager to see him back up here.
If what he says is true and he comes up here and rakes, that is the 2nd top prospect in 2 straight years that Rudy couldn’t fix (Cruz being the other). I am not opining to Rudy, but it seems he either immediately forms a very strong connection with somebody (MY, AROD, Byrd, DeRosa, Pudge, etc) or can’t reach them at all (Kins, Hammy, Cruz, Davis).
Probably over-simplying and probably happens in every organization, but just seems odd.
what about playing Hamilton at First Base? That would allow Murphy/Byrd to play left depending on who’s starting, Borbon to stay in center and Cruz in left. The, your DH can be Blalock or Jones depending on the pitcher.
Hammy at first is stupid. Murphy is better suited for 1st.
You play Byrd, Hammy, Borbon and Cruz. You might sit Cruz against the righty for Murphy. You DON’T PLAY ANDRUW JONES. Which is now hindsight b/c I’m just reading this post.
