5:29: The City Homer Pool is open for your splashing pleasure. And you might want to read about how the promotion of Chris Davis will ripple through the Rangers clubhouse. For the 71 percent of you who voted that Andruw Jones was the most likely casualty from the 25-man roster, congratulations for being right.

6:03: Small correction to the lineup. The outfield alignments is actually LF Nelson Cruz, CF Marlon Byrd, RF Josh Hamilton. Two things about this. It’s the first time this season Cruz has started in left field and I think you can pretty safely assume Josh Hamilton is now a right fielder who may occasionally play center when Marlon Byrd is in the lineup, not a center fielder who moves over to right.

6:09: The Rangers contingent for the Arizona Fall League is all but set. RHP Thomas Diamond, INF Marcus Lemon and OF Mitch Moreland highlight the group, which also includes RHPs Brennan Garr and Evan Reed, C Doug Hogan and one more pitcher’s slot still to be filled. It’s conceivable that spot could be used for RHP Tanner Scheppers if the supplemental first-round pick signs and reports to Instructional League fairly early.

6:12: The latest on C Jarrod Saltalamacchia: He threw 90 feet and worked on some release drills Tuesday. It was the first time he’s thrown since going on the DL nearly two weeks ago. Saltalamacchia hopes to throw through the Yankees series and then begin a rehab assignment. He’d like to be ready to be activated on Sept. 1, but GM Jon Daniels said that might be pushing things a bit.

6:21: Much discussion in early comments this evening about teams Rangers fans should hate, so I went to the polling software. I’ve gone polling crazy. You can submit your votes here.

6:23: Marlon Byrd bounces into a double play on the first pitch he sees from Joba Chamberlain to end the first and leave a runner stranded at third. Nevertheless, the Rangers made Chamberlain throw 20 pitches in the inning. Chamberlain has thrown more than 100 pitches only eight times in 23 starts this season. So, if the Rangers can keep the pace of plate discipline up, Chamberlain is probably not going to make it through the sixth.

6:27: This quote from Joe Maddon was just pointed out to me. Apparently Maddon told some of the St. Pete-based writers this over the weekend, but the Rays manager summed up where Michael Young is pretty well: “Michael Young is setting a great example for that entire team. He’s playing with a purpose and a mission, and they’re on his back right now. With his example, they’re not going away.”

6:40: Kevin Millwood has retired one batter on his own through 25 pitches. He’s walked two, allowed a double and a two-run homer to Jorge Posada. Bad, bad start for him here.

6:51: Chris Davis walks in his first plate appearance, so the Rangers have that going for them.

6:53: Happy early 21st birthday Elvis Andrus! The shortstop, who turns 21 tomorrow, just lined a two-run double past Alex Rodriguez’s outstretched glove to cut the Yankees lead in half in the second inning. I did a little research a few moments ago and concluded that if Andrus were to win the Rookie of the Year award, he’d be the youngest to ever catch the AL honor in the 60 years that an AL Rookie of the Year has been named.

7:00: I’m going to say that Chris Davis’ dive along the line to stop Melky Cabrera’s liner is the first out that would have been a hit had Hank Blalock still been the first baseman. Blalock did a good job defensively, but if defense is how the Rangers were determining who should be their starting first baseman, there is no question it should be Davis.

7:10: Hank Blalock on his demotion: “I’ve been in difficult situations in the past, but the important thing is how you handle it moving forward. I have to keep a positive attitude for my teammates as they come towards the finish.”

And this: “I don’t feel like I’ve swung the bat the way I wanted to or the way I should. Hitting .240 or whatever I’m hitting is just not acceptable.”

7:32: Ivan Rodriguez starts a two-out rally for the second consecutive plate appearance. Elvis Andrus drives him for the second straight time. In the fourth, Rodriguez takes a walk with two outs, moves to second on Chris Davis’ single to right and scores when Andrus’ grounder is just past the glove of diving Derek Jeter.

7:45: Summary of Rangers’ fourth: Ivan Rodriguez takes two-out walk. Five consecutive two-out hits follow. Rangers have erased 4-0 deficit to take 7-4 lead. Joba Chamberlain has thrown 96 pitches in four innings, so I can’t see him coming out for a fifth. All in all, not a bad start for the Rangers.

8:02: If the Rangers can get one more inning from Millwood and preserve the lead, they should call it a night and buckle in for the bullpen to take them the final four.

8:08: Buck is a homer pool winner. Repeat: Buck is the winner. Homer pool is now closed. Swim at your own risk. Buck email me.

8:29: Courtesy of Marlon Byrd, it’s free Gumbo time tomorrow at all Flying Fish locations (or whatever you want to spend your $5 coupon on). They will be ready for printing after the game. Just click on the ad and print the page it takes you to. Oh, yeah, I loves me some Gumbo!

9:35: Looks like only 52 votes on the “Who do you hate?” poll. Yankees are winners (losers?) with 58 percent of the votes. Angels are a distant second.

9:49: If RHP Jason Grill isn’t effective, the Rangers are going to have a huge hole in the middle of the bullpen. RHP Jason Jennings hasn’t been used since August 20 and it appears manager Ron Washington has lost some faith in him. With it unlikely that RHP Neftali Feliz would ever pitch on back-to-back days, the Rangers are going to have real problems getting through the sixth and seventh if Grilli doesn’t get sharp and qiuckly.

10:02: And I ask this: What in the world were you all worried about?

    Let’s get it on!
I hate the Yankees with the fiery heat of ten thousand suns!

  • scooper

It’s time for another Rangers’ victory!

  • IrishP1

    1. Afternoon nap? Check.
    2. No talent DH sent to tha showers? Check.
    3. Thirst for Yankee blood? Yer damn right.

The City of Gotham falls tonight!!!!

  • Rangers Fan

Hey guys! Ready for a win…

    Pregame Thoughts:
    1. Excited for Davis to be back- but let’s not expect him to me a team savior. Looking for good at bats and defense from him.
2.Kinler needs to get hot…and Hamilton for that matter.
    3. Is Cruz really playing left?
    4. It’s about time for a big time game from Millwood.

  • IrishP1

If I were to make a list of the the top 5 most underrated rivalries in sports, Rangers/Yankees would most definitely be near the top….

  • Tom B

Pudge for your RH stick and C Davis for your LH Stick and power. Speed at both ends. What is there not to like? Oh, Yeah, It’s Yankee Land. Somebody needs to let these guys know. WE Need Production. I don’t see the problem but the first pitch is still an hour away.

  • Rangers Fan

I think mutual team hatred is necessary…the yankees don’t hate us.

  • Fox

Traveling so I have not been able to stop in the corner for a while. Im about to head again but I just wanted to stop in and say: Lets Go Rangers!

  • scooper

Actually, the first pitch is only a couple of minutes away.

  • IrishP1

@RF- do you read any of the Yankees boards when they play us? The might not hate us like them, but they definitely look down on us and that can fuel a rivalry….

  • WacoGreg

My hatred for the Yanks has been stifled while they were playing Boston. As hard as that was, it is ready to explode now. Set lazer to DESTROY boys!

  • Rangers Fan

Yes, we hate them, a lot of it due to that reason. But I don’t think they see us as a rival.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Irish P1: As a Yankee season ticket holder I can tell you that Yankee fans don’t think twice about the Rangers.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Other than me now, because I live in the metroplex.

  • Word Up

    Love that leadoff walk.

Like this lineup, too, though I’d like to see Davis between Cruz and Pudge.

  • The Beer Guy

Who do they NOT look down on?

  • Mike in Reno

Yankee hatred exists out here in Reno! Let’s jump on them early.

  • The Beer Guy

So which team do you cheer for in this circumstance PTRF?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: There is absolutely no question I am rooting for the Yankees. Sorry.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I am a Yankee fan, and more of a Ranger follower.

  • Word Up

@PTRF: what’s the bill on your season tix in new yankee stadium?

  • scooper

Now, now! Let’s go easy on PTRF. He is actually one of the GOOD Yankees fans!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Having said that, the idea was floated out there yesterday by a Yanks beat writer that it might be best for the Yanks to tank these games so the Rangers can catch Boston. That tells you all you need to know about the rivalry with Boston and the lack of a rivalry with the Rangers.

  • Jack Daddy

that is why OBP is not the be-all-end-all stat. How is what Borbon just did any different than a lead off double? It’s not, but all he gets is the BB toward OBP and nothing toward slg%

  • Texas_Rocks

Wash officially announced that Borbon will be in the Lineup every day. I’d like to see him in LF and Cruz at DH but I’ll take it for right now. Glad to see Hank and AJ off the field finally. Living in Houston now so I can’t see the game, keeping fingers crossed for CD to do well.

  • Word Up

man, some ugly swing between MY and Ham

  • IrishP1

If equal hatred is a prereq for a rivalry, then the Rangers don’t have a TRUE rival.
    Houston? puh leese.
    LAA? Not a chance…

  • Evan Grant

So much discussion about Rangers fan hatred, thought I’d gauge exactly how much:

    http://www.micropoll.com/akira/mpview/630737-197488

  • Lamar in PA

The Yankees would never even consider having a rival that wasn’t pre-approved by ESPN, but I’d imagine that Rangers-Yankees is one of the top 5 one-sided seething hatreds in all of sports. They must go down, and they must go down hard!

  • Fox

Joba throws a lot out of the strike zone. Hoefully the Rangers will lay off of it.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Scooper: Thanks for the support. I promise to be nice. I don’t feel real good about this series by the way. The Rangers could very easily take two of three.

@Word Up: Since I moved to Dallas last Sept I only bought a 12 game plan of bleacher seats. They were $12/each for two tix. So only $288 total, but it gives me post-season rights.

  • Ehren

    what’s happen everyone!!!

  • Word Up

Hmmmm… not sure about that stop sign… apprarently, neither was Josh

  • Fred

Not a great read by Borbon on a rope

  • Rangers Fan

I don’t think every team has a true rival. There are big games…but not necessarily rival games.

  • IrishP1

@PTRF: I was one of the lucky few to get the 25 cent seats for the exhibition games in april. What a thrill….

  • bertie

    very un-byrd like

  • Word Up

@Fed; I love Julio, esp his speed, but he seems to be a poor base runner

  • Rangers Fan

Thank you Marlon…night. I don’t like him hitting clean up. Kinsler would have got that runner home one way or another. I love Byrd and all he brings…but he’s not a 3-4 hitter.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Lamar: I think most teams would consider the Yankees a top rival/hated team.

@Fox: You are exactly right about Joba. I posted yesterday on the lineup question that the key for the Rangers is patience against him. Joba will easily throw 100+ pitches in 5 innings if they will lay off. He doesn’t trust his stuff and tries to pick on the corners too much.

  • IrishP1

    Top 5 MLB rivalries…

    1. NYY/BOS
    2.CHC/STL
    3.SF/LA
    4.???
    5. ???

I’m not really sure of any others that garnish national attention. Anyone got an idea?

  • RAT

Byrd should have been more patient then.

I sort of knew he was going to hit into a double play after Bonbons couldn’t score.

  • Juan Gone

Yeah, anyone else kind of irritated at how often Byrd swings hard at the first pitch of every at bat?

  • scooper

@PTRF: any fan of another team who can come on our blog and not be an idiot is OK by me. And you are even better because you actually like the Rangers, too!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Irish: That’s cool. I went to the opening game and series against Cle (including the 22-3 game). It was fun, but I miss the old place. I was very un-impressed with the new stadium.

I also went to see Citi field while I was there, and as much as I hate to say it I loved it significantly more than the new Yankee Stadium.

  • Fred

    @Rocks-I thought Borbon only plays against RHP;
Also, I’m not real comfy with him in left, yet, from what I’ve seen so far

  • The Beer Guy

@PTRF: No need to apologize ;) Actually, I don’t dislike Yankee fans as a group by any means. I’m sure there are unlikable people who are Yankee fans, but most I’ve met (the REAL fans anyway, not just the putz who wears a cap) are good knowledgeable people.

It’s more the organization I dislike. Although, to be honest with you, since most of those players from the late 90s early 2000s are gone now, and since they haven’t been in a WS in 6 years or won in 9 years, I probably hate the team less now.

    Still.. Go Rangers!

  • Lamar in PA

@PTRF: I think the Rangers one-sided hatred of the Yankees is fairly unique because of our unmatched level of futility and the fact that every single stinkin time we’ve been to the playoffs, we’ve been humiliated by the Yankees. 1-9 and not one other playoff game ever? That brings about some pretty intense hatred.

  • RAT

Jeter no walks in 113 at-bats, does he walk here?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: As I’ve mentioned to you before, Evan and you guys are responsible for me following the Rangers. They are young and fun to watch. That being said, if they meet in the playoffs I will be rooting hard against you guys, but I certainly wish you luck.

  • Rangers Fan

    I might add Phils/Mets to the list…

  • RAT

Looks like Jeter’s going to see 20 pitches in one at-bat.

  • IrishP1

That, and the constant fleecing of the Rangers talent, one way or another.
I’d love to see since the Rangers have been in arlington what the number of former players donned pinstripes versus other teams. I’m sure Boston is probably up there too, but it just seems every year a former Ranger is playing in Gotham, ya know?

  • Evan Grant

6:27: This quote from Joe Maddon was just pointed out to me. Apparently Maddon told some of the St. Pete-based writers this over the weekend, but the Rays manager summed up where Michael Young is pretty well: “Michael Young is setting a great example for that entire team. He’s playing with a purpose and a mission, and they’re on his back right now. With his example, they’re not going away.”

  • Rangers Fan

Not a good start for Millwood…he just doesn’t look a thing like he did earlier in the season…

  • Jason O

Thanks a lot Bin Laden! (Ticket drop) – referring to Dave Anderson, the most conservative 3B coach in MLB.

You cost us a run….in a game where we cant afford to give them up. Nice.

  • The Beer Guy

I still think Teixeira looks like he’s a few bricks shy of a load. I think it’s his open-mouthed, dough boy face that does it.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Lamar: Good point about the playoffs.

@Beer Guy: As far as people hating the Yankees organization, I always find it funny when Cowboys fans think that. I look at the Steinbrenners a lot like Jerry. They both want to win, and that’s all that matters. They will do whatever is within the rules (or find loopholes) to win. As a fan that’s all you can ask for.

  • IrishP1

@RF – I’d consider that, but has it always been that way? I mean, was that rivavlry followed well in the 70′s 80′s, or 90′s?
I don’t know that one well enough.

  • RAT

    I miss pudge’s arm!

  • IrishP1

    Don’t test Pudge! Pow!

  • Ehren

    @Evan: Great quote!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Pudge still has it….unfortunately we didn’t see any of “it” in NY last year.

  • The Beer Guy

Gotta wonder if Millwood isn’t suffering from either a nagging injury, fatigue, or both…

  • scooper

@evan: just goes to show that anyone who knows anything about baseball respects MY.

  • The Beer Guy

@PTRF: You are correct sir! Which is why I detest the Cowboys! :D

  • Jason O

    Boy was THAT Fun!!!

    Pudge, welcome back officially! :)

  • Ehren

@scooper: you planning on hitting any of the ranger games left?

  • Ehren

A-Fraud is up. Where’s Padilla when you need him. LOL

  • scooper

    beautiful throw, pudge!

  • Word Up

@Jason O: the 3rd base coach reads his runner as much as the ball, esp on a sharp-hit ball. Once Borbon hesitated, and he did, the runner is almost always going to be held.

He might have scored, but that’s on Borbon, not Anderson

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: Noted. Hate away on the Yanks then.

  • The Beer Guy

Actually, I don’t hate them because they do all they can to win, that’s to be expected. There are many reasons I dislike the Cowboys. The Yankees don’t even come close to them on my hate-o-meter.

  • Jason O

Milly’s game plan….walk everyone, then have Pudge throw them out.

  • scooper

@Ehren: Sept. 20 against the Angels.

  • Fred

Not sure Anderson holds him if he didn’t heaitate

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Looks like Pudge traded in his Astros gear for Rangers gear.

  • IrishP1

I would agree with PTRF especially with both stadiums opening this year, but lately it seems like Jerry has stepped back a little bit from the limelight. Luckily the Jerry wannabe up in DC still thinks he’s gonna buy a championship and that always makes for good comedy for the rest of us….

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Sorry, on second look it is the same stuff he’s been wearing.

  • Ehren

@scooper: i might just have to go to that game. :D

  • RAT

    Ouch…

  • Ehren

    d@mmit!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@IrishP1: George has also been out of the limelight for a few years, but his is for medical reasons. Now his sons, Hank and Hal are taking over. They can be putzes, but seem to be staying a little more quiet than their dad.

  • scooper

Yeah, that looks more like Rangers’ Red.

  • IrishP1

Millwood does not look right at all.
Props to Matsui for killing that ball, but seriously, Milly looks gassed already.

  • Rangers Fan

I think what irks me most about the Yankees is not the org. It’s the ****iness of the fans (not all-no offense PTRF) The majority of them are just insufferable. I don’t think Cowboys fans are as high and mighty as Yankee fans.

@all…I’m calling church on Millwood’s season. I can’t remember the last time he had a real good start.

  • Fred

@Irish-those who can afford to pay the most get a lot of good guys from teams who can’t/won’t

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Nice slide by A-Rod. He plays for “my” team, but he’s an idiot.

  • Word Up

Milwood’s toast. Just a prime example of an pitcher/athlete who can’t get thru August.

  • The Beer Guy

@PTRF: At the risk of belaboring this issue, I’ll just say that mainly I dislike the organization (Yankees, that is) because of their dominance in the late 90s-early 2000s (I simply got sick of them always winning), and because of the whole money/salary issue, which I think is very much to the long-term detriment of the sport. At least Jerry Jones is bound by a salary cap…

  • Word Up

@PTRF: did u see the video of the Phillies fan dumping beer on the Mets fac, then backing it up by knocking the Mets fan out?

    Awesomeness

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Rangers Fan: Yes, there are a lot of Yankee fans that are pains in the a$$, but not all of us.

  • IrishP1

It’s funny to say this, but Snyder makes the Joneses and Stienbrenner’s look like saints. He doesn’t know when to shut up, he basically thinks he can blatantly copy what George and Jerry have done, and the end result has been a losing season the majority of the time.

  • The Beer Guy

Is he still dating Madonna? Was he ever actually dating Madonna?

  • Rangers Fan

    Dough Mathis anyone?

  • RAT

    Millwood makes me sad.

  • IrishP1

This is getting out of hand WAAAAAY TOOO FAST. Wash, you better have someone ready and like, NOW!!!!

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

Its like I said the last time the out-of-shape poor excuse for a #1 starter had an abortion of an outing, the dude is not good. He is either hurt, or he just sucks. There is no other way around it. And dont talk to me about what he did in April and May. Hes doing the same crap he has done his entire overrated career.

And theres a homerun. Get his ass outta here, put Mathis in, and give us a chance to win a freaking game.

  • TEUFELI

Dont tell maddux to go talk to him Ron. Wait till it’s 7-0

  • scooper

@ehren: I’m down the left field line, Section 9, Row 23. It’s Dog Night, so I’ll be there with Bernard (terrior/schnauzer).

This is NOT what we needed from Millwood!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: I understand getting tired of seeing them winning, but as long as there isn’t a salary cap in MLB you can’t fault an owner for taking advantage of that.

@Word Up: No, I didn’t see it. Wish I had. Everytime I go the Shea/Citi field wearing Yankee stuff I get cussed out by FEMALE Mets fans.

  • Ehren

@Beer Guy: I think most people have dated Madonna. :)

  • IrishP1

No, Arod is not dating Madonna. Instead, he’s nabbed the greatness that is Kate Hudson. Makes me sad/angry/jealous all in one….

  • Rangers Fan

This is going to sound weird…but I hope there is some sort of minor injury with Millwood. Otherwise, he has just lost it. I really think the last time we saw a good, ace type start was in June.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: He never “officialy” dated Madonna, but they were seen together a lot. He’s now dating Goldie Hawn’s daughter. Can’t think of her name.

  • IrishP1

31 pitch first inning. And Joba leads the majors in pitches per inning. Something doesn’t match up here.

  • Ehren

@scooper: yea, we needed a little bit more from him. thought BP was before the game.

i’ll score some tickets near where you are.

  • RAT

Well, the game is still early, one of two things can happen. The Rangers score several runs to come back strong, or they collapse and lose by 20.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

I’m telling you right now. He WILL give up 10 runs tonight if we let him.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

All: This ain’t over. Trust me. I’ve watched Joba all year. He’s started 23 games this year, and only has 11 decisions. That should tell you something about his ability to hold leads and stay in a game.

  • The Beer Guy

Interesting isn’t it that I would easily prefer Holland, Hunter or Feldman over Millwood at this point in the year.

@PTRF: Can’t fault ‘em, but don’t have to like it either! Hopefully this will all be solved sooner rather than later with a salary cap. Then again, I probably shouldn’t hold my breath…

  • Jack Daddy

disgusting first inning. borbon botched that badly at 2B.

Millwood looked gutless out there. The walks made him seem scared to attack this team. I suppose he was “unlucky”? Give me break.

TKT thinks he has fallen out of shape. Maybe, maybe not. But he looks horrible.

JasonO- that’s a line from The Hangover. The tkt is just borrowing it.

I’m in a foul mood. See you boys tomorrow.

  • Ehren

PTRF: that would be Kate Hudson. i’m kind of ashamed that i knew that.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

What a kick in the nuts that first inning was. I dont see how it could possibly have been any worse.

  • Lamar in PA

    REALLY important to score here.

  • IrishP1

If Millwood is done (injury/fatigue) for the rest of the year, what the heck do we do? What’s the update on McCarthy? Harrison? Who will be the 5th starter if we need one? The time to have answers for these questions is NOW, and JD and Nolan better have some GOOD ANSWERS.

  • James

Really, really dumb AB by Marlon in the first. Millwood has no location tonight. And Kinsler swings at the first pitch in the top of the 2nd.

  • Ehren

later Jack! nice question to JD today.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @Ehren: Thanks. I think.

  • The Beer Guy

We can come back from this if it’s the recent shaky Joba. Then again, we often seem to have a way of helping struggling and/or mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young…

  • James

JD said today in the DMN chat that Millwood is not hurt.

  • Ehren

McCarthy is doing rehab starts in AAA. He’s close.

  • RAT

If Joba’s throwing balls in the dirt, why is Cruz swinging at them?

  • Ehren

@PTRF: don’t mention it. EVER! LOL

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

PTRF – The Yankees are 11-3 in games started by Joba since June 1st. The Rangers are 7-6 when fatboy is on the mound.

  • Jason O

Up-oh…now down 4-0, you know our hitters will revert to form and stop working counts (ala Byrd) and play right into Joba’s hand.

Millwood needs to fight like the “Ace” he supposedly is and find a way to get through at least 5, or else our pen is screwed and you’re looking at a sweep.

Is it Dutch Oven time yet?

Here comes a 2 run Crush job!

  • IrishP1

If I hear them say that Millwood just needs to figure it out on his own and get through these situations, I have concern. He’s had almost 3/4′s of a season to do this and we’re in a playoff race here. If we have to chalk up a gauranteed loss every 5 starts, we’re not going anywhere….

  • Rangers Fan

ok- good at bat here Davis…

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: The only positive for Yankee fans about Joba tonight is that his only three great starts came after the AS break when he had extended rest. He is on 8 days rest tonight. Maybe he gathered his thoughts like he did during the AS break. I’m not counting on it, though. I don’t think this is over by any stretch.

  • RAT

    Nice…

  • RAT

    four pitch walk… I’m sold.

  • Ehren

    a walk. very encouraging.

  • Rangers Fan

    YES! A 4-pitch walk! I feel like he hit a homerun…sorta!

  • Texas_Rocks

    GREAT START FOR CD

  • IrishP1

And if it IS fatigue, does the blame go to Nolan and his long inning/ lots of pitches philosiphy?

  • Leemer in Austin

@IrishP1 – The other rivalries that come to mind for me are: NYY vs. NYM, OAK vs. SF, and the long-gone NYY vs. LAD.

As for the poll, I voted for Oakland. My reasoning was they are a division rival that dominated for a long time in the late 80′s, the Moneyball lovefest, and their players always seem to be guys that are fun to hate.

Yes, I hate the Yankees, but their disdain for us makes it seem like we are a sycophant 10-year old tagging along with our 17-year old brother and his friends, hoping they will pay attention to us.

  • RAT

Can we send Hamilton and Kinsler down to AAA so they can work on their swings?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    Here comes the “real” Joba.

  • Fred

    Good, eye, Chris
@beer guy–if you hated NYY in the 90′s, you should have seen em in the 50′s. Break up the Yanks! was the cry, then

  • jcouch

@evan please explain why our young guys are more patient than the veterans? this is really frustrating! We really needed that run in the 1st.

  • Jason O

@JackDaddy – I know…I was just using it in the sense that the ticket does (Grubes is my leader)

I didn’t want anyone on here to think I was actually comparing Dave Anderson to Bin Laden…I like Dave as a person, though he sucks as a first base coach. Unless you like stranding 3-4 runners every week due to over-conservative coaching.

I also think he should mix in a sandwich every now and then…dude looks like a stick

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

This game is not about the offense tonight. Its about Millwood being on the mound. I dont care if we score 6 this inning, does anyone REALLY feel comfortable with fatboy on the mound?

  • RAT

    I like it!

  • Ehren

    there is life!

  • Rangers Fan

Big hit…I love it when the kids come through. Oh wait, they have all year.

  • jcouch

see, you wait and you get a good pitch …

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Hear me now, believe me later…

  • Ehren

that pitch was nowhere near where it was supposed to be.

  • IrishP1

Leemur – I can’t consider Interleague at all because it is still way too soon and there hasn’t been enough games between those teams for there to be a true history. At least with the rivalries I mentioned, you’re getting at least 20 games between those teams. A season. you only get six with the ones you mentioned.

  • RAT

    Millwood-take-two

  • Texas_Rocks

Can someone please explain to me how the young guys can be patient yet the vets can’t???

  • Rangers Fan

    Now what will Millwood do…

  • Fred

    @jason-he’s a 3B coach. Pettis is 1B.

  • Juan Gone

Alright, good inning to keep close…buckle up everyone, Millwood’s coming back out….

  • Evan Grant

6:53: Happy early 21st birthday Elvis Andrus! The shortstop, who turns 21 tomorrow, just lined a two-run double past Alex Rodriguez’s outstretched glove to cut the Yankees lead in half in the second inning. I did a little research a few moments ago and concluded that if Andrus were to win the Rookie of the Year award, he’d be the youngest to ever catch the AL honor in the 60 years that an AL Rookie of the Year has been named.

  • Leemer in Austin

@IrishP1 – Agreed. And that’s just sad. And that was the point I was getting to.

  • IrishP1

Hopefully Millwood took some geritol between the innings so he can remember how to throw good strikes….

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Classic Joba. Get two outs, lose focus, give up hit, don’t hold runner, walk a guy, get behind again, groove one for a hit.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Joba Chamberlain.

  • Fred

@Batface-where were you when he was carrying the team in the 1st half?

  • Jason O

haha! I’m stuck in a hotel room in ATL and the video on my MLB.tv package went out (worst service ever), so I’m having to listen to the Yankees radio network…

They have this chick who is providing color and her quote to describe A-roids D on the Elvis 2B goes as follows:

“A-rod just couldn’t get on his knees fast enough there”

    - I couldn’t agree more!

C’mon Milly….suck it up and have a shutdown inning!

  • The Beer Guy

@Fred: I would have loved to live during the days of the Dodgers-Yankees rivalry. Packed stadiums, crazy fans, kids talking about it all the time. That would have been awesome. I think I might have been more a Brooklyn fan, but I don’t like LAD now.

  • The Beer Guy

@PTRF: Where do you fall on the SP or RP issue for Joba?

  • IrishP1

That being said, the rivalries you did mention have actually happened in the world series, which is really cool. As much as I hate to say it, I would’ve been just fine to see the Dodgers and Yanks in last years WS, especially with Yankee Stadium closing. That would’ve been the proper way to close it out….

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Jason O: That is the “great” Suzyn Waldman. She’s a ton of fun to listen to all year…sigh.

  • Evan Grant

@The Beer Guy: We should get you in touch with Evan the elder, otherwise known as dear old dad. He grew up in Brooklyn, was and still is a Dodger fan. Not even them moving cross country dimmed his love of the team.

  • The Beer Guy

@Jason O: It must be your internet service there. I am having no problems with MLB.tv tonight (rarely ever have problems)

  • Rangers Fan

@Texas_Rocks: This may be a strech…but I think a lot of it has to do with hitting coaches. The young guys are relying on what they have been taught in the minors, not what Rudy preaches here. I just have lost all faith in him. Rudy doesn’t teach working counts and patience. Older players are Rudy people…I don’t believe the rookies and young guys are.

  • IrishP1

I love watching that “Ghosts of Flatbush” documentary on HBO. Might be the best one they have done as far as sports goes….

  • RAT

    Davis!

  • Rangers Fan

So good to havve Davis back in the field…

  • IrishP1

And there is what a GG first baseman is supposed to do. Take notes, Hank.

  • Phil

    Nice job CD!

  • Fred

@beer guy-it was cool. Used to see them in spring training, growing up in Fla. Mantle, Ford, Berra, Rissuto, Hodges, Robinson, Snider, Furrillo, Campanella, etc

  • IrishP1

The Dodgers and Yankees don’t play every year since Interleague has started, have they?

  • scooper

There’s just something about listening to Josh Lewin talk about hitting that is just ridiculous.

  • RAT

Alright Pudge, let’s throw out Jeter again…

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: I think he has the mental makeup of a reliever. He seems to have a short attention span and I don’t think he can focus for an entire game. He can be a bulldog…for an inning or two. When he only has to throw an inning he lets it all loose.

However, if he can get his head straight and trust his stuff he could be a fantastic starter. I just have my doubts.

Now Yankee fans have the same question about Phil Hughes. He struggled as a young starter, but has been lights out as an 8th inning guy. So the question is out there with him…leave him in the ‘pen or make him a starter next year.

  • Johnathan

To all the CD haters, the first two innings are exactly why fans were begging for him to have another shot.

  • Evan Grant

7:00: I’m going to say that Chris Davis’ dive along the line to stop Melky Cabrera’s liner is the first out that would have been a hit had Hank Blalock still been the first baseman. Blalock did a good job defensively, but if defense is how the Rangers were determining who should be their starting first baseman, there is no question it should be Davis.

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: Hah! Nice, so he still follows them, eh? Vin Scully is about the only thing I like about the Dodgers now. I especially find the whole story of Chavez Ravine really shameful and distasteful. You should read about it if you don’t know about that business already.

  • Phil

BTW, can I start a petition which states that Millwood can no longer be referred to as an “ace?”

Nice of him to come out and set the tone for the series.

  • Jason O

@The Beer Guy – yea, its the hotel internet here…everyone else slowing it way down with ughhhh….”other streaming video”.

I finally got the MLB app to work on my iPhone though, so HELLO tiny screen baseball!

Also, welcome back Crush! Great walk, score a run, then show of your “he just has a glove” to Goldstein!

  • Fred

We’ve missed you in the field, CD

  • Evan Grant

@The Beer Guy: Yeah, but he now asks me about the former Braves that toil for the Rangers. He was big on Mark DeRosa a couple years back, now big on Andruw Jones. I’ll have to break the news about the hammy to him.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Irish: No, the Yanks and Dodgers don’t play every year. Only the Yanks and Mets.

  • IrishP1

@TBG – Are you referring to the business of moving the Dodgers to LA or something else? Cause if you’re referring to the move, there’s only one guy to blame for that and that is Robert Moses….

  • RAT

Teixeira looks annoying with that batting stance.

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: Couldn’t agree more with that 7:00 statement! And in the absolute worst case, he can’t be any worse offensively than Hank had been since the ASB. I mean, in one AB he has like 30% of Hank’s walks in that time!

  • Evan Grant

    Millwood now at 50 pitches.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: I meant to tell you congratulations and say I was wrong…for only the second time in my life. Andruw accepted the DL assignment. You were right, I was wrong. You’re smart, I’m dumb. You’re great, I’m overrated.

  • IrishP1

Well, Millwood cut his pitches down and didn’t allow any more runs. I’ll take that. Now, do it for another 4-5 innings….

  • Fred

Milly is obviously not sharp, tonite, nor has he been since the ASB, but he seems to have a particular 2 out problem tonite.
Got out of it, but how many pitches now–50?

  • Juan Gone

These walks are troubling. He’s walked the 1 2 and 3 hitters in the lineup and thrown 50 pitches in 2 innings.

  • The Beer Guy

@Irish: Well, generally yeah, but I mean the whole story behind Chavez Ravine (it was a neighborhood) and the way they basically took it for the stadium.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A1vez_Ravine

The sections 1940s and 1950s deal with what I am talking about.

  • Last of the Romohicans

Yeah… I’m not catching up on the comments, but it’d be nice if the Rangers caught up on the scoreboard.

  • IrishP1

White Sox tied it up against Boston. Keep it up, South Siders….

  • Rangers Fan

TAG has been laying out on Josh an awful lot lately…

  • RAT

    TAG doesn’t give a s***.

  • scooper

@PTRF: let’s not go overboard, now! I just figured that it was a halfway legit injury. It is hard to argue if you really do have a problem.

  • RAT

Maybe Jones can take a rehab stint in AAA to fix his swing…

  • Evan Grant

7:10: Hank Blalock on his demotion: “I’ve been in difficult situations in the past, but the important thing is how you handle it moving forward. I have to keep a positive attitude for my teammates as they come towards the finish.”

And this: “I don’t feel like I’ve swung the bat the way I wanted to or the way I should. Hitting .240 or whatever I’m hitting is just not acceptable.”

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Time for a Joba meltdown. He doesn’t understand the concept of picking up your defense.

  • IrishP1

@TBG – Never knew about that. That is pretty dang low for that to happen. Leave it to a war to cost people their homes….
    Well, war and horrbile politics….

  • Rangers Fan

Not a good place to steal…

  • Evan Grant

@All: Over 200 comments in the top of the third. If we keep on a 100-comments-per-inning pace, we’ll be looking at about 950, which would of course be a new record. Just sayin’….

  • IrishP1

Now, why in hell would you send Josh there? Marlon’s bat has been lukewarm at best. Doesn’t make sense….

  • scooper

@Ehren: there may be 1 or 2 other Cornerians come by to visit during the game, too.

  • Fred

20/20 hindsight: not sure I buy Hammy going there, with Byrd up

  • IrishP1

There you go Evan, tryin to jinx that great game again. What was it? LA or Boston? That was a special night there….

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

@Fred, I dont care what he did in April and May. All I care about is if the guy on the mound tonight can help my team win. Since July 1st, the Rangers are 3-5 with him on the mound and he has an era around 6. Coming into tonight game, for his career he is exactly a .500 pitcher with an era right around 5.00 In other words, he is reverting right back to the guy he has always been.

  • IrishP1

And Boston retakes the lead. Sonbitch.

  • scooper

I love CD at first base!

  • RAT

Hooray Davis! Taking a play calmly compared to Blalock scrambling on his hands and knees for a ball 5 feet from first.

  • IrishP1

I was always more partial to “Handlebars” Davis. He looked like a badass!!!!

  • IrishP1

now that’s what I’m talkin about, Kevin! Let’s get those bats warm already!!!!

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

That may have been the best inning he has pitched all year. Nice job.

  • Juan Gone

    4 pitch inning? WTF, millwood?

  • Evan Grant

If I have that right, Millwood had four pitches in the third. That’s kind of a comeback.

  • Phil

Hey look, Millwood’s an “Ace” again!*

Man, he really knows how to battle.*

    * Heavy Sarcasm

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

*** in my previous post, I obviously mean for his RANGER career, NOT entire career ***

  • RAT

Millwood pitched better because he has himself programmed to start pitching at 7 central, not eastern.

  • RAT

Kinsler needs to be benched after that lackluster swing.

  • scooper

    2 pop-ups for Kins.

  • Last of the Romohicans

@Evan – read anything into Blalock’s use of the pronoun “They?” Was his tone ok?

  • RAT

    I’m not a fan of throw-away at-bats.

  • IrishP1

That’s two AB’s and two pop ups for Kinsler. Rudy, you’re on watch again….

  • jcouch

guess what — another pop up from in a and oh yeah there is nothing wrong with his swing…. right

  • jcouch

    YES Network SUCKS

  • RAT

Talking about throw-away-at-bats… Cruz needs to be slapped.

  • Rangers Fan

Man, I don’t blame Kinsler for being so defensive towards fans these days…

  • IrishP1

Look at that – Kins, Byrd, Cruz, Hank.
That’s what WORKING A COUNT is all about….

  • Evan Grant

@Last: Blalock is disappointed and hurt. He’s about to turn 29 and become a free agent and he’s doing nothing to help his long-term career. But I was impressed with how he answered the question I asked him about dealing with this. He could have chosen to not respond. He instead said he’s got to have a good approach going forward.

  • Evan Grant

We’re one walk away from free GUMBO!

  • alan

The most fustrating hitters to watch on this team Itme to vote your choices

    a Kinsler
    B Cruz
    c Blalock
    d Jones

I am going to go with kinsler I like kinsler but it just amazes me that somebody can not get him to stop that uppercut swing that just drives me crazy and the most madening thing to watch in my opinon.

  • IrishP1

    Put Davis at cleanup. Pow!!!!

  • Fred

Both pitchers appear to have a “2 out thing”

  • RAT

Sweet Davis. He wasn’t aiming for the fences, he just gets a nice, solid, hit.

  • Lamar in PA

It’s interesting turning the corner out of the steroid era to see players like Blalock and Jones be pale shadows of their former selves in their late 20′s and early 30′s. For a long time there, it seemed like if not for injuries, EVERYONE continued at the peak of their powers until at least 35.

  • IrishP1

I will say Kins too, because he does more window shopping out of those 4. That being said, when Hank goes down swinging, it’s very sad to watch. It looks like he tears every muscle in his body to swing that bad, and he pulls his head out way too early. Everyone sees it except him…

  • Tom B

Blalock might be looking at the end rather than future security

  • Rangers Fan

@alan: go back and look at his swing last year and this year. It’s the same. For whatever reason, his timing has been off, which also causes popups. I’m not an expert on his stance and minor details that we often can’t see but I do know I don’t trust Rudy to catch and correct them.

  • Last of the Romohicans

    @Evan.

He’s not.. NOT about to turn 29. HES NOT EVEN CLOSE!

HE HAS A LONGGGGGGGG TIME TO GO!

(Note: I have the same birthday, just one year earlier, so 11/21/09 can’t be far enough away.)

  • jcouch

Give me the future now… DAMN right Elvis

  • RAT

    I like it… Again!

  • IrishP1

Um, that’s our 7,8, and 9 hitters doing all the good things for us tonight. Work walks, get timely hits and rbis, and come back from 0-2 counts to do some damage.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Have I mentioned that Joba loses focus?

  • scooper

For Hank’s sake, I hope this serves as a wake-up call and he is able to re-make himself somewhere else next year.

  • Evan Grant

@Last: Sorry, he’s turning 29 and you are hitting the big 3-0. But don’t feel bad. I’m turning Hank Aaron’s uni number in two weeks.

  • scooper

…and the bottom of the order is the normal place to lose focus?

  • jcouch

    JULIOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Rangers Fan

LOVE IT! Young kids coming through!

  • Evan Grant

    Chamberlain now at 80 pitches.

  • RAT

    Youth… is fun!

  • IrishP1

    Look at that!
    WELCOME TO THE FUTURE NOW!!!!
    Let’s do this dance!!!!

  • scooper

The future looks bright! Not to mention the present!

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

The 2nd best thing about that hit? The upcoming NO DOUBT double steal.

  • jcouch

    double steal anyone?

  • Fred

    1) Hate to see Hank go out embittered, unsuccessful and in denial. I watched him coming thru the minors-loved him and his approach and intensity.
    2) Elvis is the new Ted Willams–for one night, at least

  • IrishP1

Alright Mikey, make em pay. I want more runs and you’re just the guy to do it.

  • Tom B

Borbon may be better served to go to the Instructional League to learn how to run bases and play the outfield. He runs us out of too many inings. He is a rally stopper too often.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Joba’s not the brightest candle in the menorah.

  • The Beer Guy

    Yes! Great job!!

  • Lamar in PA

    AWESOME guts here!

  • Texas_Rocks

Once again, will ALL of the people who wanted to get rid of Borbon, and Feliz, and Smoke, and I don’t know how many other players in EVERY trade, PLEASE STAND UP. EVAN, MY FRIEND, you know that Includes you :-)

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

    HELL YES

  • Dan-drus

    Elvis!Elvis!Elvis!

    (sorry I’m a little late)

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I tried to tell you that this wasn’t over.

  • IrishP1

It’s a cage match triple threat for MVP….

    Mikey vs Jeter vs Tex

    NO HOLDS BARRED!!!!

  • Evan Grant

Four straight two-out hits for Rangers. Young extends his hitting streak to a dozen games and then takes second when Yankees throw to third to try (unsuccessfully) to catch Borbon. Rangers take lead back.

  • DC

I hope all the Ranger (vets) except MY, see how these kids are schooling them and learn.

  • RAT

    I’m calling a Hamilton 3-run shot here.

  • IrishP1

PTRF – I’m not familiar with the Yankees middle relief. How has your pen looked this year, sans Rivera?

  • scooper

@Texas: and we have all already apologized and admitted the error of or ways many times.

  • jcouch

TEXAS!!!! Guys I live in Connecticut and if we can take 2 of 3 from NY it will be so sweet to talk baseball with these yankee bastards…

  • RAT

    I’ll take that instead!

  • Evan Grant

Make that five straight two-out hits. Young taking second produces another run.

  • IrishP1

    HAMBONE!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!
And the boo-birds are out and about…..

  • Brett in SD

    Evan,
I was thinking of your post from 33,000 feet yesterday. That’s an excellent example of utilizing the “running game” (Borbon taking third, allowing Young to take second), even if it doesn’t involve a steal.

  • Evan Grant

Chamberlain about to make 90th pitch.

  • RAT

Should send Byrd to AAA to work on his swing too. He’ll be the inning ender.

  • Lamar in PA

Woo-hoo! Amazing they haven’t sent Joba to the Hut yet!

  • scooper

@PTRF: and, once again, you are right! I hear and I believe!

  • Rangers Fan

I don’t know of anyone hoping to trade any of them. Willing, maybe? Not like people were running them out of town/the minors.

  • Evan Grant

@Brett: It produced a run and there is nowhere that will show up.

  • The Beer Guy

    Hot damn!

  • albtead

    I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!

  • Texas_Rocks

Wow, Boo-Birds for the Prized Jaba… New York is such a Band-Wagon Kind of Town

  • scooper

@RAT: Marlon is one of Rudy’s reclamation projects.

  • IrishP1

Josh stole my lightning there. Kevin should be WELL RESTED come the bottom of the 4th….

  • Lamar in PA

@Evan: statheads will tell you that it will all work itself out over the course of the season, like everything else stats don’t measure, lol.

  • scooper

@RangersFan: thank you! you are absolutely right.

  • alan

as the saying goes and a child shall lead them but for this saying lets go with the childern shall lead them

  • Lamar in PA

    NEED the shutdown inning here!

  • RAT

Hold your breath with Millwood time!

  • scooper

No, Marlon HOPED that he had the walk.

  • IrishP1

    Here’s the replay of Joba’s performance….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ95CvQZFb4

    POW POW!!!!

  • Evan Grant

7:45: Summary of Rangers’ fourth: Ivan Rodriguez takes two-out walk. Five consecutive two-out hits follow. Rangers have erased 4-0 deficit to take 7-4 lead. Joba Chamberlain has thrown 96 pitches in four innings, so I can’t see him coming out for a fifth. All in all, not a bad start for the Rangers.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Trust me. I’ve watched this moron too long.

@Irish: The late inning guys have been great. Middle relief…not so much. Josh mentioned Dave Robertson warming up. He leads MLB in K’s per 9 innings, but walks way too many. Gets himself in unnecessary trouble.

Alfredo Aceves is another long guy that was great early on, but made a spot start right before the AS break and complained of soreness shortly there after. Hasn’t been the same since. After that it’s a bunch of spares.

  • Rangerette

I can taste the gumbo at Flying Fish already. Fly high, Rangers.

  • Ryans Dad

Best half inning of Ranger baseball in recent memory.

  • The Golden One

That’s two of those tonight. So much for the shutdown inning.

  • IrishP1

Are you kidding me? Yank Kevin now. A first pitch hr? I don’t care if there was luck involved. Yank him now….

  • The Beer Guy

lol I could hit that homer…318 ft

  • The Golden One

Damn, how bad to Cruz miss that? I hate to see it, but I think he shoulda caught that.

  • Fred

Cruz misjudged that one by 5 feet

  • Word Up

What a ridiculous homerun… hard to blame Millwood on that one… as much as I want to

  • Rangerette

Evan, why do you have a glove on in that caricature? You look like a psycho gynocologist.

  • Texas_Rocks

How does Kevin Millwood suck so bad

  • DC

It hit the foul pole. it’s out.

  • Ryans Dad

What was Cruz doing? He thought it was way foul it looked like.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

He’s BAAAACCCCKKKKKK!!! And WTF was cruz doing there?

  • Rangers Fan

Why is Cruz playing left field?

  • IrishP1

Wash, you’re gonna lose a timeout with that challenge. Pow!!!!

  • Fred

Was it a clever ploy to try to fool the replay camera? Don’t think so, but here’s our cyber top 5 OF. Mighta been catchable.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

For all of you complaining about Cruz’s LF play, be thankful you don’t have to watch Johnny Damon play out there. He goes after flyballs like Helen Keller. He’s horrible.

  • Texas_Rocks

Guys, I said this to start the game and I’ll say it again, CRUZ NEEDS TO DH and get as far off the field as possible…. Put Borbon in there from now on…

  • RAT

Hate to admit it, but Borbon might have been able to get that one. Cruz’s first time in left, misjudged.

  • DC

It hit 4 foot up the pole Cruz would have to jump like kobe to get that .

  • Word Up

think you guys are being a little hard on Nellie on that one. Tough play against the wall, near the foul pole like that. looks easier since its just 318

would have been a real web gem to come up with it.

  • Evan Grant

@Rangerette: It’s either supposed to be a tribute to Michael Jackson or a big foam #1 finger.

  • Fred

@Rocks-He’s not good tonite, but that’s a can of corn fly in every park but Boston, and Posada’s HR was the same in most parks. What did CJ say about the HR he gave up in NY earlier this year?

  • Rangers Fan

Even if they don’t want Borbon out there…Why not role with Marlon in LF, Josh in center and Cruz in right…like everyday before Josh got hurt.

  • James

What are the dimensions of the lines at the Ballpark? 314 in right and 318 in left at the Yankees park seems really small. Cano’s HR is the third pop-up HR against the Rangers this season.

  • Fred

@word-agree that it would have been a gem, but wish Cruz had been in the same zip code

  • Rangers Fan

@Fred: true…the cheapest homerun or somesuch…That one was a carbon copy only this one hit the foul pole.

  • IrishP1

Boston should’ve never taken Wagner. Waay too much ego and not enough arm. They will rue the day….

  • scooper

@PTRF: lol. NOW you sound like a Yankees fan!

  • Word Up

If Millie somehow grinds 5 innings out of this and the Rangers have the lead… hard to not be happy with that in an otherwise crappy performance

  • The Beer Guy

    @James: 332 LF, 325 RF

  • RAT

If that last pitch wasn’t a strike, Byrd should have walked last inning.

  • DC

Theres nobody on this team that could have jumped high enough to catch that if you look at where it hit the pole.D Howard in orlando couldn’t have caught it.

  • Ryans Dad

@Scooper, he is a Yankee fan.

  • James

Ballpark in right 349 and 354 in left. Wow, what a difference.

  • IrishP1

Word: as much as I would love to agree with you, I’m under the mindset that no lead is safe with this team as of now….

  • Fred

    Uh-Oh…2 outs.

  • RAT

Nevermind the thought of Borbon getting that home-run then.

  • Ryans Dad

Nevermind, you probably already knew that. Forgive my ignorance.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Thanks. I was at the last Yanks playoff win in the old stadium (game 3 against CLE in ’07) when Roger Clemens got booed and heckled for leaving the game injured. His last game ever and people were telling him he hadn’t done anything for the Yankees and was overrated. Gotta love Yankee fans.

  • alan

okay somebody remind me why we pay him to be our supposed ace and if it is worth all that we pay him for just a ? to ponder

  • scooper

    @RyansDad: I know.

  • Texas_Rocks

@Evan: Is it too early to want Feliz ready for the 5th inning?

  • RAT

    Nice job Milly!

  • Ryans Dad

Sorry about that Scoop, didn’t read your post the way it was intended.

  • Evan Grant

That’s three 20-pitch innings for Millwood so far.

  • Jason O

With Millwood on the mound, that DOES qualify for a shutdown inning!

I do like how Jeter had zero walks in 113 plate appearances until his 2 tonight.

Thank God for Damon. I can play a better LF than him, with twice as good an arm.

  • scooper

@alan: because he is the closest thing to an ace that we have been able to get for years. Fortunately, we are growing some of our own. Also, until the pitching started looking good this year, he was actually the best we had.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @Jason O: I don’t doubt that for a second. He’s brutal out there.

  • alan

2-1 red sox top 7th white sox have 2 on and 1 out

  • IrishP1

Gaudin – former A’s pitcher, right?

  • scooper

@ryansdad: no problem. Hey, how are ryan and ryansmom?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Gaudin was picked up off waivers from SD. The freakin’ Padres didn’t want him. Tells you all you need to know.

  • Texas_Rocks

I don’t know how many of you guys remember this, but Gaudin almost shut us out when he was with the Padres in Arlington

  • IrishP1

    3 AB’s, 3 pop out/fly outs. Do the math.

  • Word Up

We should get to see Feliz tonight as a reward for having to watch Millie for 5.

  • scooper

    @Irish: yep.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Irish: Yes, he pitched for oakland previously.

  • Jdavies81

As far as I’m concerned this is the lineup I want day in day out…

  • Doug Fu

    Nellie!!

  • jcouch

    get some nellie

  • IrishP1

Way to get back, Nellie. Nice revenge shot.

  • jcouch

oh yeah ian hit a fly ball again

  • Word Up

    Boom goes the dynamite.

This park make Minute Maid look like the Polo Grounds

  • Texas_Rocks

It’s about time we benefit from that Stupid Park

  • Ryans Dad

Doing good. We had a little family b-day party tonight for the little booger, that’s the reason for my tardiness.

  • Tom B

I say Feldman is the NEW stopper. He wins more after a loss than Millwood. Especially since Millies pulled Glut after the ASB.

  • Word Up

I’m calling one for Crush here

  • IrishP1

Didn’t Gaudin, when he was in Oaktown, have one of the meanest fastballs ever? I remember him mowing down hitters left and right….

  • Rangers Fan

    Chris looks great tonight.

  • DC

Evan who has won more games for the rangers millwood or padilla?

  • alan

2-2 red sox and white sox top 7

  • IrishP1

I am so happy for Crush. Welcome back, buddy.

  • Texas_Rocks

Guys I can’t watch the game so can someone tell me if Davis’ batting stance looks different????

  • Juan Gone

    Crush having a great night!

  • jcouch

can we get OKC hitting coach up here ASAP to work with Ian… Thanks… CD looks like a totally different hitter… he won’t swing unless it’s his pitch

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

It’s funny, the dimensions are the same as the old stadium but there is a definite jetstream of air to RF. It’s caused by the Steinbrenners luxury box. They built seats off the front that hang over the lower level and it has caused a different wind pattern. At least that is what they’re saying.

  • scooper

    @ryansdad: how old?

  • alan

    3-2 white sox

  • Tom B

Nellie gives and Nellie takes away.

  • Word Up

@Texas_Rocks: yes– a little more open, slightly wider, and his front leg is straighter. Looks like he’s really working on seeing the ball earlier and staying back on it

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Irish: Don’t know about Gaudin on OAK. Just know he sucks now.

  • Ryans Dad

Maybe the MLB should launch an investigation into it to see if they should lower the pressbox by 20′ or so PTRF

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    Come on White Sox!

  • DC

    ELVIS = ROY

  • Jeffrey

good evening all! sorry I’m late, but the score sure looks good.

  • IrishP1

He’s just a hunka hunka burnin love, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

  • Evan Grant

8:08: Buck is a homer pool winner. Repeat: Buck is the winner. Homer pool is now closed. Swim at your own risk. Buck email me.

  • Texas_Rocks

Nice…I’m so happy for CD. He’s a really good kid. The last time I saw him play was when he dove to first beating out an infield hit that Sunday Night Game on ESPN. It’s people like CD that make me love watching the Rangers play. Thank God Andew “Fat” Jones and Hank”in the Tank” Blalock are finally off the team

  • scooper

@Texas: yeah, it is different. more open, less upright (back leg is obviously bent).

  • Evan Grant

@DC: I believe Millwood has a one-game advantage over Padilla.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

LOL. I loved it when Jerry was laughing at the punter.

I assume your comment was in reference to the Cowboy Stadium scoreboard debaucle.

  • IrishP1

Lester yanked, Okajima in. This should be interesting….

  • Jeffrey

hey chris davis is having a pretty good game. how does he look at the plate…relaxed? calm? confident? patient?

  • easyeddie

Have to give RW credit for lulling the competition to sleep with the lineups he was rolling out there, knowing he was going to unleash the kids at the end of August. Very clever….

  • RAT

    All of the above Jeffrey.

  • scooper

NEWSFLASH: Hank and A.J. are not “off the team”

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

White Sox up 3-2 with bases loaded in top 7. Two outs.

  • IrishP1

Who the hell wants a salsa bowl? How about a Rangers tire jack? A Rangers switchblade? Make something we can ALL use. POW POW!!!

  • Jack Daddy

    1. ok – i didn’t really go away.
    2. JasonO – good. I was about to come pick you up make you watch the movie (how can anyone not have seen that movie?)
    3. Evan – as you know, I wanted Hank gone a long time ago. That being said. I’m sad for him and impressed by his professionalism. I hope he takes joy in this ride, remembers some of the clutch hits he had (2 walk offs, plus the big hr against Morrow) and finds a good home next year (maybe the Padres for the minimum and a chance to resurect his career, especially if the Friars move A. Gonzalez).
    4. Ehren – thanks. been wondering where you’ve been.
    5. Borbon is driving the ball tonight.
    6. Surely Mathis is at the ready, right?
    7. Once again, I repeat my request for a 6 man rotation in Sept. to keep the arms fresh.
    8. If Davis is truly back, look out.
    9. Pudge may go down as JD’s second best trade in his tenure here.
    10. Elvis has the brightest future of any athelete at this age I’ve seen come through here since Emmitt was a rookie.

  • DC

CD looks like he did last year nice and relaxed.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Crap. Strikeout. 3-2 CHI going to bottom 7.

  • Ryans Dad

    Indeed it was PTRF

  • Texas_Rocks

I know they’re not OFF the team, but as long as they’re NOT on the Field, I Don’t give a rats a$$ what they do

  • DC

Scooper let them dream. Like we all do.

  • Jack Daddy

Biggest douche in professional sports? Alex Rodriguez?

Beginning to believe a little bit more those defensive stats that say Nelson Cruz is the best RF in baseball. Hammy’s jump is horrible out there.

  • IrishP1

@ Jack – on #9 – the Teiexiera trade might trump that one, buddy….

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Jack Daddy: I’m not an A-Rod fan, but he has actually made a concerted effort this year to not be as douchey.

He basically told all of his handlers to leave him alone and he’s not talking to the media all the time like they wanted him to. He’s trying to fit in more this year and be “one of the guys”. he’s never done that before.

  • The Beer Guy

Working on a 4+ hour pace here for the game. It feels like it ought to be in the 8th inning…

  • Rangers Fan

@PTRF: What is your take on the Posada/Burnett thing?

@all: last night made me happy that Laird was not a Ranger…anyone else?

  • bigskinny

Mr. Blalock should meet Mr. Coolbaugh. Maybe Mr. Coolbaugh should move to Arlington.

  • Ryans Dad

@Jack Daddy, I agree with everything you just said.

  • jcouch

SIDE NOTE: Martin Perez – 2 hits, no runs and 3K 4 IP so far 2nite

  • James

My prediction is that Blalock ends up in SD next year.

  • IrishP1

Biggest douche in sports? I won’t say Arod because he doesn’t instigate the hatred, he just gets it.
Remember a former kicker by the name of Vanderjagt? He personified douche of the highest order….

  • The Beer Guy

Surely T.O. has to merit really strong consideration for that title…or maybe Carmelo Anthony? Never liked that guy.

  • Evan Grant

This is last hitter for me unless he gets Cano out. I’m not letting Millwood face the go-ahead run.

  • Ryans Dad

Anyone else worried that 8 runs won’t win this game?

  • Word Up

    that sucks

  • Phil

What is up with Millwood struggling so much after getting two outs.

A FOUR pitch walk? Are you kidding me.

And I get so sick of hearing how he “battles.”

  • bigskinny

@Ryans Dad: Count me as one worried dude.

  • IrishP1

@ Ryans: I said it earlier, no lead is safe with this team right now.

  • IrishP1

    There ya go, Milly!!!!

  • scooper

I seriously doubt that 8 runs will be enough.

  • Jack Daddy

I guaranteed on Saturday that Davis would be back.

I have another one – Rudy J. will not be back next year as the hitting coach.

  • Juan Gone

@ IrishP1: there ya go, davis!!

  • IrishP1

Ranger killer Vmart just tied it up in Boston.

  • Jack Daddy

    @irish – that’s my #1. which one am i forgetting?

  • Evan Grant

@jeffrey: Pet peeve is those of us who try to describe how a guy “looks” at the plate or on the mound. We tend to say they look confident or relaxed when they are successful. All I know is Davis has had three really good plate appearances. If that constitutes confidence, then he’s confident. It’s been a good return made all that much better by a walk and two sharp defensive plays.

By the way: Millwod does not start the sixth for me. But I don’t see anybody warming in the Rangers bullpen.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Rangers Fan: I think there is a little something there, but overall it’s not as big a deal as they’re trying to make it out to be.

Burnett is 9-3 with a 2.59 ERA in last 12 starts. Posada caught 10 of those. The problem is that Burnett can get frustrated and let games get away from him. Then he feels like Posada isn’t calling the right pitches. Well, it’s up to the pitcher to throw what he wants. If you don’t like what the catcher called then shake him off and get the pitch you want.

    I think they’ll be ok.

  • alan

    3-3 red sox 2 on bot 7th

  • Fred

Now, sports fans, that’s a veteran pitcher. In a bad stretch, doesn’t have his best stuff or command, throws 50+ pitches in 2 innings, gives up 2 320′ homers and guts thru 5, Cyber folks: quantify “balls”.

  • Ryans Dad

Count me as someone pulling hard for Noriko to win him $25,000 tonight

  • DC

Smoak is going to struggle bad with CD gone. He has no protection now.

  • IrishP1

Jack: I didn’t read it all the way. Second best, I just noticed that. Sorry. I just went full retard there…

  • Dan-drus

    c’mon Josh…run the ball out

  • Tom B

Millwood has 93 pitches with just over half for strikes. Get that man a taxi back to the hotel where he can watch this from the bar.

  • The Golden One

What are the odds 8 wins this?

  • Word Up

@Phil: b/c he gets tired. poorly conditioned athlete.

that said, he chews up some innings after a very bad 1st and turns the game over to the wolf pack with a 3-run lead.

  • Jack Daddy

irish p1 – i’ve been hollaring for a high OBP/count worker, right handed bat to be brought in here next year (and think that will happen). But, I would toss that notion for a chance at Vlad. His bat looks very much back to me. I’ve watched him a bunch the last 10 days and he is raking.

    I’d offer $15MM over 2yrs, plus $5 in incentives (.320 +25 HRs gets $5M more, each season).

  • Jeffrey

@Evan thanks for your opinion. And I have to say, I tend to agree. Like what Romo said not too long ago…when a team wins, they have “swagger,” whether or not they really do.

Regardless, I’m glad Davis is having a STRONG first game back

  • RAT

The quote should say Millwood battles… when he gets himself in trouble for no reason.

Then again, you can’t say Millwood is a constant cake-walker, so battling sounds about right because he’s always faced with unnecessary adversity.

  • Dan-drus

If Millwood comes out for the 6th I’ll be pissed.

  • Juan Gone

    Let’s go KINS!

  • RAT

Kinsler… finally does something right at the plate tonight!

  • IrishP1

Jack: I would give anything to see THE ULTIMATE RANGER KILLER in a Texas uni. That would be a day of days….

  • Ranger_Rick

Evening, great game at the plate tonight for the team. Looks like having Davis back has energized the team.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I’m calling Cruz bomb over the LF ‘pen.

  • Evan Grant

8:29: Courtesy of Marlon Byrd, it’s free Gumbo time tomorrow at all Flying Fish locations (or whatever you want to spend your $5 coupon on). They will be ready for printing after the game. Just click on the ad and print the page it takes you to. Oh, yeah, I loves me some Gumbo!

  • Word Up

@Fred: I have 2, which, I’m told, is the usual amount

  • Rangers Fan

    Just need a single here…

  • Jack Daddy

@evan – is there anybody else in baseball that you can think of that:

    1. has the pure “stuff” that Beckett and Burnett have; AND
2 seem to just get lit up as much they each will get?

I can’t think of another pitcher off the top of my head (I don’t count Joba – he’s still a pup).

Particularly, Becket. For the life of me, I don’t understand how that guy EVER has a start like he had Sunday night.

All – Ian went to opp field his 3rd AB too. I know he’s still in 240s, but I like his approach so much better since beign back.

  • Ryans Dad

Looks like the Yankee’s pitching strategy was to not throw strikes to Ranger hitters. How’s that working for ya?

  • RAT

Did Cruz tweak his back or something? Bending over a bit too much.

  • RAT

    uh-oh!

  • Evan Grant

@Ryans_Dad: Forget Noriko for a moment. You win! Everybody wins! Sorry, I get happy pants when y’all win in the Depot Game. Now make our advertisers happy and use them coupons tomorrow!

  • Ryans Dad

    NORIKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Rangers Fan

    Now wouldn’t this be exciting…

  • IrishP1

Let’s get this Noriko some MONEY!!!! Let’s go Pudge, you can do it!!!!

  • Word Up

    Here comes a slam.

  • albtead

Didn’t Gaudin throw one hit ball for eight innings against this year for SD? Go Pudge!!!

  • DC

After seeing MY’s hug of CD in that interview theres no way hank getting benched hurt anyones feelings . Well besides hanks.

  • Ryans Dad

    Oh, that just stings

  • The Golden One

Pitch was so bad it was good.

  • Rangers Fan

It couldn’t have been a real shocker to Hank though…I mean, he hasn’t been good for all buy a few weeks of the season…

  • James

Not to jinx anything, but it looks like Martin Perez is dealing tonight. (Knock on wood)

  • scooper

    MY just wants to WIN.

  • Dan-drus

    prediction:

Millwood gets taken out of the game this inning with the score 8-7

  • JohnnyMel

They managed to get the third out this time, but apparently getting the third is really hard for the Yankees. (I think I saw the link here somewhere earlier)

    http://riveraveblues.com/2009/08/getting-the-third-out-16301/

  • The Beer Guy

Don’t you know Noriko Itami was sitting on the edge of his seat at home?? hehe, too bad, woulda been nice for everyone

  • Word Up

    this just can’t be good.

  • scooper

See? A little adversity didn’t hurt Perez. And now he is dealing as an 18-year-old in AA!

  • Rangers Fan

Oh my gosh…he’s back out there.

  • IrishP1

The kid is warming up. Let’s hope he has a big lead to work with in his first appearance in Yankee Stadium….

  • Fred

    Only 93 pitches? Amazing

  • Texas_Rocks

I hate how Washington doesn’t know how to manage a pitching staff…. HE’S GASSED…GET HIM OUT

  • Rangers Fan

Wait, I thought “the kid” was Elvis…

  • Evan Grant

Now, Feliz is up. He should be in the game right now. Sorry, but four of Millwood’s five innings have been stressful and he went to the mound with 93 pitches to start this inning. I suppose the thinking is he’s retired the two hitters he’ll face to start the inning, but he’s yet to get Derek Jeter out and he’ll hit third. Just can’t agree with this one.

  • Jack Daddy

why do i have the feeling that Magglio Ordonez will be the next Rudy J project?

That assume he doesn’t vest his K (which right now is looking better for him) and the Rangers bring back Rudy J (which I guaranteed wouldn’t happen above).

I just wanted to go record with it. Could be our version of the Abreu signing this winter. I’d be happier if our version of Abreu was Abreu himself. I think he could have the same impact on our hitting mentality that Bradley did last year.

Milly’s last batter if he loses him.

  • Ryans Dad

Fred, you and me agree on something tonight.

  • Word Up

    okay…one down

  • Tom B

BEWARE: Wash At Work…Millwood comes back out to once again show us the first was not a fluke. Will Wash ever go against his Vets First Rule?

  • scooper

Happy is up in the ‘pen. Elvis or Holland have been “the kid” so far.

  • DC

I want to thank AJ’s hamstring too.

  • IrishP1

I use the term “kid” for all of our rookies. Holland
    Feliz
    Bourbon
    Andrus

  • Evan Grant

    M. Byrd.

  • alan

I will say this he gets through six this is a gutsy performance by him and I will amend of some of what I said earlier

  • jcouch

    what a catch byrd

  • Word Up

that’s why marlon is in cf, and not josh…. two down

  • Doug Fu

    Byrd Man!!

  • Rangers Fan

    What a catch…wow

  • IrishP1

ba ba ba ba ba ba BYRD BYRD BYRD THA BYRD IS THA WORD! MA MA MA MA OOO MA MOW MOW MAMA OOO MA MOW MOW!!!!

  • Ryans Dad

    Edmundsesque

  • Jack Daddy

@evan – i usually agree with you. But not here. I ride Milly until he puts one on. he’s given up 1 run since 1st. every out he gets is one out we bring it closer to FF. Maybe it saves Oday or CJ to go 1 extra time in this series.

  • Jeffrey

sick slider to jeter…finish ‘em off!

  • Jack Daddy

    @alan – ditto.

  • James

@Jack – I think you’re wrong on Rudy, he’ll be back as long as he has a contract.

  • IrishP1

Runners on the corners and nobody out for the White Sox. A little help would be much appreciated….

  • Jeffrey

    dang it

  • Rangers Fan

@Evan: are you leaving us in the off-season to become Marlon’s agent?

  • Word Up

    somehow predictable…pull him now?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Not that anyone here cares, but Jeter is now 18 hits away from tying (and 19 from breaking) Lou Gherig’s record as the all time hit’s leader for the NYYankees.

  • alan

    its happy time

  • Juan Gone

Feliz coming in. Wise move, Wash.

  • scooper

I’m ready for Feliz in Yankee Stadium.

  • IrishP1

    SING LOUD!

    FELIZ NAVIDAD!
    FELIZ NAVIDAD!
    FELIZ NAVIDAD!
    PROSPEROS ANOS Y FELIZIDAD!!!!

  • Jack Daddy

here is where the 1 weakness in the pen shines bright – no lefty other than CJ. I think they HAVE to add AJ to roster in Sept, to see what he has.

  • jcouch

The guys on YES just called Happy – Neftali Perez… and you wonder why I say these guys suck… they do no research on the opposing team… at least Lewin knows teh other team and can add something to the program

  • Word Up

this could be cool. but i think this game is going to get real dicey.

  • alan

okay he dint make hit but he battled and I guess thats all you can ask what an effort

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@jcouch: Who’s doing the game on YES tonight? Michael Kay or Ken Singleton? I can’t get it, have to watch Rangers broadcast tonight.

  • IrishP1

Nevermind the curve, Ricky, give em the heater….

  • Ryans Dad

Johnny Damon looks so much like Corby it’s scary

  • Jeffrey

    atta boy Feliz

  • jcouch

did you see the movement on strike two WOW

  • Juan Gone

*kisses fingers, points to sky, walks back to dugout*

  • Texas_Rocks

What’s better than Neftali Feliz in a clutch situation….NEFTALI FELIZ FOR MANY YEARS TO COME BECAUSE HE WASN’T TRADED TO THE JAYS !!!!!!!!!

  • Fred

@word-there are balls and there are BALLS. Millwood has the latter–quality, not quantity.
Altho, I admit, I wouldn’t have sent the old warrior out for the 6t with what he had, tonight.

  • Evan Grant

@Rangers Fan: The only time I’m leaving during the offseason is – hopefully – to make a little Caribbean jaunt.

Situation works out in the sixth. And in retrospect, Jack_Daddy’s theory is correct. But I just saw Millwood collapse in the sixth inning after 92 pitches in the first five. Thought he was ripe for another. He did a good job of battling as long as he did after that 31-pitch first inning. Now, I suspect Feliz has the seventh as well, and then you’ve got the back end of the bullpen set up the way you want.

  • jcouch

@Part Time – I believe it is singleton and cone

  • James

    Martin Perez done for the night: 5IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 3SO. 88 pitches, 56 strikes.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @jcouch: Cone’s probably hung over.

  • Jack Daddy

i love josh lewin. he’s an encylopedia and he does more than just give “down and distance”. If all i wanted was a talking head to tell me what i just saw and what the count was, I’d turn down volume and read the graphics. He’s entertaining, imo. Plus, he’s good at drawing Grieve out (and annoying him).

  • alan

red sox white sox tied bot 8th

  • IrishP1

Wasted chance for the White Sox. Idiots.

  • RAT

What’s the comment record for this depot dilly?

  • Rangers Fan

I agree with Jack Daddy…I was not a fan of the Saturday night duo of TAG and Barnett..so boring and DAve jinxed Neftali. (allowed the walk)

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

The best color announcer on YES is Paul O’Neil. You wouldn’t believe it if you watched him play and remember how upset and frustrated he would get, but he’s a riot in the booth. Always has funny stories to tell.

  • Jack Daddy

let’s say Happy gets through 7th with say, 15 pitches. Teh decision to start the 6th with Millwood probably “bought” you the use of Feliz on Thursday.

That’s huge. I think RW has gotten much better about using the pen with the next 3 games in mind. Sorry Evan.

  • jcouch

@ Jack D – these guys on YES saw feliz come in and it sound like this was there 1st time hearing of him… they said WOW his numbers are astronomical… they had no clue who he was

  • scooper

@evan: what, exactly, is the record?

  • Danny

there is something to be said about chemistry, you can sense the younger players are following the lead of vets such as Young and Byrd. This is so exciting to see now, and anticipate.

  • Fred

@PTRF-That’s pretty nest about Jeter/Gehrig-2 true Yankee heros (on and off the field)

  • jcouch

Borbon and Elvis are so disciplined… I love it and not too mention Smoak draws a lot of walks as well and CD looks better at the plate

  • albtead

Did anyone notice the bourbon ad on the billboard when Borbon was batting?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@jcouch: Feliz hasn’t gotten a lot of national press. Most announcing teams only know about guys they’ve seen. The YES guys haven’t seen Feliz yet.

  • Doug Fu

    MY!!!!

  • jcouch

    MY BABBBBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • Jeffrey

    and there’s our MVP…MY

  • Jack Daddy

Evan – the bad part abou the Twins game was RW had nobody ready to jump in. Tonight, he had KM on a short leash with Happy ready to go.

    Love you MY

  • alan

    my for mvp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fred

    Band box works both ways!

  • Tom B

Send Davis back down. Four trips to the plate and he has already made one out. Hank would have had five or six depending on # of double plays he hit into

  • Ranger_Rick

that’s what the threat of speed, stealing does for ya!!!!

  • Rangers Fan

Keep adding them on people…no lead is safe.

  • DC

MY wont get MVP but he should be in top 5 for sure.

  • albtead

    MVP!!!!!!!!!

  • Juan Gone

There goes my hero….watch him as he goes!!!

  • jcouch

@PTRF – ESPN has done some coverage on him and if this is your job you have to know abt this kid… I don’t expect a fan to know but if you get paid to do this you have to know

  • IrishP1

Bay just gave the Red Sox the lead. Again. BLAST!

  • alan

    bay hr 4-3 red sox

  • Texas_Rocks

Guys, this is why Borbon NEEDS to be at the top of the lineup every day. SPEED KILLS. The pitcher is so worried about Borbon that he serves it up to Mike. I can’t wait until next year when you’ll have Borbon Leading off and Andrus hitting Second. They are going to wreck havoc on opposing teams

  • Stuart

    MY is the freaking man!

  • Jack Daddy

prtf – maybe not team announcers, but Baseball Tonight has been creaming over him since his debut (kind of surprising).

This should wake NYY fans up for the next two. They’ll be rabid tomorrow. Nice stage for Dutch.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@jcouch: You’re probably right. I feel a need to defend “my” guys, but you’re probably right.

  • albtead

What MY just did wasn’t exactly clutch but how big are those two runs the way that this game is going. I am biased towards MY but can we ask for anymore out of this guy?

  • Lee

How many one pitch at bats does Byrd have this year?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

There are only 3 active players with 7 or more seasons with 200+ hits and .300+ average. MY is one of them.

  • Rangers Fan

Why is Kevin Millwood up for player of the game?

  • Ryans Dad

    @Lee (as Norm Hitzges) EIGHT!

  • Danny

as much as some want to rip Wash, he’s made as many or more effective moves, MY @ 3rd, M. Byrd in CF, sending Crush down, it’s a team effort, that’s what Wash was preaching when he first arrived.

  • Juan Gone

Hehe….love it. Teixeira vs Feliz, and Feliz wins.

  • Jack Daddy

@evan – scouts were about a divisive on Borbon as any player I’ve seen in these last 3 drafts.

Clearly, somebody in the organization has done a very nice job working on his plate development. Who do you think should get most of that credit? Service (spelling?), Coolbaugh?

To me, the biggest accomplishment that JD has made since he’s been made GM has been surrounding himself (and utilizing) a talented, talented player scouting and delopment operation. Credit to Nolan for not interrupting what was in progress and to Tom for having the patience.

  • Fred

Don’t think we’ve seen this quality of 1B play in a couple of months

  • Texas_Rocks

Does anyone else wish Feliz would just put 100 MPH in A-Roid’s Back??

  • DC

    Just a bit outside.

  • Rangers Fan

@Danny: I think the majority of those moves, if not all, were brought about by JD.

  • Ranger_Rick

I hope Feliz strike him out…swinging

  • Texas_Rocks

Well I got the 100 right, just not the hit him with it

  • Ryans Dad

Bring in the 88mph curve to finish him off

  • Rangers Fan

OH MY! wow…thats all I can say.

  • jcouch

WOW… YES had the last three FB @ 101, 101 and 100 to strike him out

  • Jack Daddy

welcome to the major leagues Happy. Just as TAG was saying he couldn’t do it. Nice.

  • Ryans Dad

Or just throw one by him, it doesn’t matter

  • RAT

    That’s scary.

  • Juan Gone

3 consecutive over 100?! Pretty confident in his stuff, I’d say.

  • Ryans Dad

    Matsui is guessing

  • scooper

And Davis (23) is the “old man” of the youngsters!

  • RAT

He almost struck out on a ball that hit him… ha!

  • Jack Daddy

this is the most quiet i’ve ever heard Yankee Stadium, and i lived there for 6 seasons.

  • Jeffrey

Did I just catch a “niner” from Lewin? Is he calling from a walkie-talkie?

  • Ranger_Rick

I still can’t get over how effortless Feliz’ delivery looks.

  • Fred

@jcouch-Smoak better learn to hit AAA pitching, especially, LHP, 1st.
@Rocks-Borbon needs to prove he can deal with LHP and work a whole lot with Gary Pettis

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @Jack: Exagerate much?

  • RAT

    Nice! Feliz is nasty.

  • Jack Daddy

Wanna wager what leads off BT tonight?

  • Rangers Fan

He needs to be given the oppertunity to see LHP here.

  • Doug Fu

(I know this is a weird question on a night he has 4 hits)…

But at what point do you start to worry about Hamilton’s power stroke? Or do you just figure it’ll come around at some point?

  • Rangers Fan

    @Jack Daddy…BoSox

  • jcouch

@ Fred- you are right but I believe he is so selective that he will be a better hitter in the majors bc he will get better pitches to hit… I am kinda glad he is struggling right now bc it is a learning experience… also, if wash would give Julio a chance he might at least be a ble to work a couple of walks and lay down some bunts against LHP

  • john in clearwater

    Part Time Ranger Fan -

Here’s a virtual beer and a grouper sandwich from Clearwater. Thanks for hanging with the Texas boys tonight.

Just gettting on the thread. I must admit I hate the Yankees. Either that or envy. Or jealousy. Probably all the above. But we will rule the field tonight! Go Rangers!

  • RAT

Why is Lewin talking about losing streaks?

  • Juan Gone

@ john in clearwater- as a Rangers fan, there is no hatred because of jealously. Only an unquenched thirst for vengeance.

    That’s all.

  • Ryans Dad

I can’t speak for everyone, but if Hammy’s power never comes back but he hits at the clip he’s shown over the last month, I won’t ever say a word about it.

  • scooper

I’ll take hits from Josh any day, but I also believe that the power will come back.

  • Fred

Yankee announcers raving about Feliz (“ball just jumps out of his hand” and Holland

  • Jack Daddy

    @ryan’s dad – agreed.

was watching BT – what did Kins do? BT, no mention of Rangers yet. Though I missed first 5 minutes or so.

  • alan

    1-0 tigers top 1

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@John in clearwater: Thanks. Any tartar sauce? If the White Sox had beaten the Red Sox I wouldn’t really mind this whoopin’, but don’t like losing when BOS wins.

  • scooper

@PTRF: I’ll lift a XX to you, too! You may be a Yankees fan, but you are also obviously a gentleman. Thank you for spending the evening with us.

  • Ranger_Rick

Yea the power will come back. Just needs time. If nothing else he’ll be back next year, healthy and in shape. Hitting like he was last year. But hitting like he has been is nothing to sneeze at. No complaints here.

  • john in clearwater

    Part Time Ranger Fan -

Sure. Heck, I’ll even throw in a few conch fritters. Yummy.

  • Jack Daddy

Reasons #11 and 12 why 2010 will be even better?

Goodbye Eddie Guardado. Hello Matt Harrison.

Goodbye Jason Jennings. Hello Brandon McCarthy (or Dustin Nippert).

  • Fred

@Jack-I usually agree with yo, but I sure hope you’re right, there

  • Rangers Fan

So who rolls out of the pen for the 8th and 9th?

  • Ranger_Rick

Hey, conch fritters!!! haven’t had those in many many years….

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    Thanks, scooper & john.

  • Jack Daddy

nice AB by Chris. Got good pitch to hit and had good swing. Just missed it.

Who pitches the 8th? I think you treat a 5 run lead vs. this like a normal 2 or 3 run lead. Maybe not CJ here, but at least ODay. Though he pitched all 3 games in TB.

  • Rangerette

Free gumbo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Flying Fish, here I come-bo.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

BTW, has anyone seen this site. It gives each teams chances (in %) of winning division, winning WC, and making playoffs. Pretty cool.

    http://www.coolstandings.com/baseball_standings.asp?i=1

  • Ranger_Rick

Ok Jack, so who takes Nippert’s spot in the rotation… you thinking maybe Sheets?

  • Fred

NY announcers just said CD had been on a “rehab stint”–a mighty long one!

  • Tom B

Who does Wash give the ball to?

  • easyeddie

@Evan – any concern with Happy’s workload tonight?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I think this is a waste of Feliz’s innings, but glad the Yanks may not have to see him again this week.

  • Dan-drus

How do you narrow it down to just 3 Up for the Post-Game tonight?

Borbon, MY, Hambone, Elvis, Davis, Happy…

How about 3 Up, 3 More Up?

  • scooper

CD wasn’t on the DL, but I think it is safe to call it “rehab.”

  • Rangers Fan

I need to see this SI issue…how sweet would it be to have them both autograph it?

  • alan

tell me everybody in all years have you been this excited to watch a ranger pitchpr you cant wait till the next time that he does ?????

  • Jack Daddy

@fred – its probably more likely that Brandon starts in rotation and Harrison in OKC (JD understands you’ll need more than 5 starters to get through a season). But either way, Eddie and JJ are gone. Suspect Nippert fills the JJ role and they get a lefty in the market (unless Murray wows them in September, if given the chance). I suppose Kiker could also be an option, like Holland was this year. He just needs to stop hitting guys.

  • scooper

@PTRF: don’t bet against Feliz on Thursday, if we need him.

  • The Beer Guy

Didn’t really want to see Feliz come out for the 8th. Now he probably isn’t available for the remaining two games.

  • DC

They give the rangers better odds to win division than WC. What are they drinking?

  • Jack Daddy

@alan – the last Rangers pitcher (other than Nolan, of course) that I was that excited to see his start for what he might do was Bobby Witt, as a rookie.

  • alan

who was the girl in that shot with john radigan go back to that shot please

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: It’s ok, you can let him rest. Use him against BOS. ;)

  • Tom B

Feliz won’t go more than 40 pitches.

  • scooper

@DC: they think there is no way we beat Boston.

  • Jack Daddy

feliz is now done for Thursday. But that’s ok.

Now have OD, FF and CJ for both games. Not sure who finishes this one off though.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@DC: I thought the same thing. I’m not a mathemitician (or speller), so I’m not sure how they come up with that.

  • Rangers Fan

    We’re done with Boston…

  • Rangers Fan

    Who is “they”?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Rangers Fan: Sorry, I thought Rangers went to BOS next. Where do they go after NY?

  • IrishP1

    Bring in O’Day.

  • Rudy

    Minnesota.

  • Dan-drus

    @Rangers Fan

    What SI issue?

  • scooper

    minnesota

  • IrishP1

Tigers up 1-0 on the Halos. Keep it up, guys….

  • DC

42 pitches for NF. Don’t think he should have started that inning.

  • Jack Daddy

just had a thought – what the hell are they saying to Feliz out there? I suppose Elvis translates? Such an awesome kid (Feliz and Elvis for that matter). Have I mentioned that I love this team?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    Minn. Thanks, all.

  • Rangers Fan

    @PTRF: Minnesota….
@Dan-drus: Apparently this weeks issue features Holland and Feliz.

  • Fred

Cyberheads say Blalock a lot better 1B than CD. JD and Wash say the opposite. Who to believe between baseball folks and slide rules/pocket protecters??
By the way, woulda left Feliz in for another batter.

  • Jack Daddy

before people begin to question why the use of CJ or FF, look at what NYY did vs. Boston on Sunday. They brought Rivera in for the 9th with a 4 run lead. You have to play the games against Boston, NYY and LAA a little differently. Such explosive offenses, that a 5 run lead vs. them is equal to a 2 run lead vs. say the Royals. Plus, you just CAN’T blow this kind of game.

  • JustSaying

luv to hear a-fraud got a little taste of the “kid” he left behind………triple digit luv for a-fraud……….

  • Tom B

I’m thinking Wash sneaks back and checks out Corner Comments between innings because he is looking a lot smarter

  • TEUFELI

nice move wash. Coulda let neftali go 4 outs…and brought in ANYBODY for the 8th with a 5 run lead…but no…u burn him so he is complely unavailable tmrow. You are managing to specifialcally make your decisions easy. It is wrong.

  • Jack Daddy

@Evan – you should check out Corner Bistro in the West Village. I’m sure youv’e been there, but the best burger in the City, by far. You can then swing around to White Horse Tavern and mingle with all the snooty NY writer-types (I assume WHT is still there).

  • JustSaying

@fred which cyberheads? what drug are they on?
geez if i’m a pitcher and i look up and see cd at first i get a warm glow……

  • Rangers Fan

Ummm Josh just called Borbon Jules..with a J. That’s a girl name! It’s Jules with an h sound!

  • scooper

Feliz wouldn’t have pitched tomorrow even if he only went 4 outs. They don’t want to use him back-to-back.

  • Tom B

I have to believe Pudge is a comfort for Feliz when he is behind the plate.

  • Ryans Dad

Numbers don’t lie Fred, but baseball folks can tell you if your sample size is large enough yet. Must have balance of the two.

  • Mike

Mo hadnt pitched in 4 days

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: didn’t evan say the other day that the new Feliz rule is one day rest for each inning pitched? That means two days off now.

  • Fred

Kinda supports the question on Borbon vs LHP

  • Rudy

@Teufeli — Per several recent reports, Neftali Rules are these: if he takes the mound for one pitch, he is unavailable the next game. However many innings he pitches, that’s how many days they will hold him out before his next appearance. So no matter what happened, he was not coming back tomorrow. He now will not come back on Thursday, either, unless they changed the rules.

  • JohnnyMel

And the “young” shall lead them…

I love all the “young” guys on this team, even if the only thing “young” is their last name.

  • Ryans Dad

That swing looked like old Josh, guess that’s allowed after a 4 hit night?

  • Rangers Fan

@PTRF: That’s what’s been reported but JD said today there are no set rules.

  • IrishP1

@RF – what about Jules Verne? That was pronounced with a “J” and not an “H”.
Thank you Back To The Future 3 for that one….

  • scooper

@PTRF: those are “guidelines.” My guess is, if we need him Thursday (Yankees) and he says he can go, he can have his days off against the Twins.

  • Jack Daddy

here is the link to (what I assume) is the SI story. Its on the Wild Card Races. Haven’t read it yet.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1159234/index.htm

  • Tom B

It’s called The Feliz Tour. Everybody sees him only once and then he and they are gone until next visit.

  • scooper

…but I’m sure they would prefer that we don’t need him on Thursday (as long as we win).

  • IrishP1

Wow. Grilli? Seriously? What is Wash thinking here?!

  • IrishP1

    And it begins….

  • Rangers Fan

    I’m nervous about this…

  • Jack Daddy

@Mike – I didn’t know that. Still think he would have pitched even if he he wasn’t so rusty. but that is a good point.

  • scooper

Wash is thinking that if he can get out of this game without using C.J. and FF, then he will have them both for Wed. and Thurs.

  • Rudy

I think he gives Grilli no more than 2 chances. Pull him immediately if he puts Tex on.

  • Rangers Fan

    I think I would have let O’Day stay in…

  • Evan Grant

@IrishP1: Washington is thinking that he won’t have Feliz at his disposal again this series (thanks to 42 pitches tonight) and so he’s trying to keep C.J. Wilson and Frank Francisco fresh and available. It’s a five-run game. But there is action out there right now.

  • john in clearwater

I think I pitch Mathis in the 9th.

  • RAT

Okay, cut the bull… let’s finish this inning and get some sleep.

  • Rudy

    GET OUT THERE WASH!!!

  • alan in SA

when did Grilli come off DL?

  • Jack Daddy

jeez – maybe grilli should have had a longer rehab stint. we need mccarthy back so we can get nippert back in pen.

  • Evan Grant

    So much for that idea.

  • Texas_Rocks

Well guys, have I said this before, WASH DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO MANAGE A PITCHING STAFF…. Why in da hell is ODay not in there finishing the F*uckin Game when all he did was get a guy that was perfect until that at-bat… I hate Washington…. not personally, but just as the freakin joke he is for a Manager

  • Rudy

    Thank you. Hope it works.

  • IrishP1

Why didn’t he keep O’day in? What did Darren do in the 8th to not be considered for the 9th? I don’t get that move.

  • The Beer Guy

Hey don’t beat around the bush Texas_Rocks. Tell us you feel, let it out.

You have a 5 run lead, why NOT use Grilli?

  • ebennett

Last year I read on a certain Dallas daily newspaper blog from all sorts of unpleasant types that Michael Young was washed up. They were always bellyaching about his contract and how he couldn’t field or hit. Some suggested the Rangers should trade him and eat his contract. One even suggested if he were a man of honor he would return his undeserved gold glove.

Happily those toads didn’t follow Evan to his new home. MY is one of the classiest guys in baseball and is driving this team. Before his career is over I bet he wins a GG at 3rd and maybe wins another batting title.

  • Rudy

@Texas: Baseball teams don’t just roll the ball out there and win on their own. This team is 1.5 games out of the wildcard, and it’s almost September. Wash deserves credit for that, whether you like it or not. Maybe they’d be in first with a few different decisions, or maybe they’d be 10 games out with a different manager. No way to know. So chill.

  • Ryans Dad

Agree with decision to bring in FF here. Get this win and play loose the next two games.

  • RAT

I smell an unassisted triple play here.

  • scooper

@Irish: he had pitched 3 days in a row before having 1 day off.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

TAG’s wrong. It is a save opp now.

  • The Beer Guy

That should be “tell us how you feel”.

Maybe since Feliz is tapped for two days I imagine he wanted to limit O’Day’s night so he could go tomorrow if needed.

  • scooper

    …and lefties?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    Or am I wrong?

  • IrishP1

@ TBG – b/c O’Day was doing fine. I trust O’day with a 5 run lead, facing the HEART of the Yankee order a HELLUVA lot more than Grilli….

  • Lamar in PA

I’d have gone with Mathis instead of Grilli, but I’m glad RW went to FF before it got too out of control. But I understand holding back the top arms, even limiting O’Day since we hope to need them the next two days. We’ll see how this works out.

  • Jack Daddy

if we lose this game, this will be the worst loss in the history of the metroplex. worse than “The Catch”, worse than the “Ice Bowl”, worse than Game 3 of Mavs/Heat. :)

  • Rangers Fan

Oh dear FF does not look on…you can tell in his first few pitches.

  • IrishP1

    No lead is safe……

  • Ryans Dad

Slow down there Jack, Game 3 in 06 was pretty bad

  • Last of the Romohicans

so…. I go to do my Auction League picks…

and now Frank’s trying to pour napalm on the fire…

  • Rudy

    Freakin’ Frankie.

  • The Beer Guy

It’s a FIVE run lead. Don’t you prefer to save your elite guys for the chance of a one run lead tomorrow? It sounds like hindsight nitpicking to me. Again, “why couldn’t the pitcher get the out?” is more important.

  • IrishP1

    This is not good.
This is NOT good at all….

  • Auditor

As scooby would say “Ruh Roh”.

  • scooper

@PTFR: I thought the tying run had to be on deck.

  • Fred

@Just Saying–the same folks who ranked Blalock as a much better 1B than CD and Cruz as one of the best OF in the majors Adam something was trying to convince me of the validity of their calculations, unencumbered by experience in the game, last week–or you can wander over to the LSB site.

  • alan

please god tell me this isnt happenning not boston allover again if so please shoot me now please

  • scooper

…or is it in the hole?

  • Jeffrey

    crap

  • IrishP1

    I can’t watch this….

  • Lamar in PA

    This is not looking good…

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: I believe tying run has to be in the hole.

  • RAT

    Still no outs…

  • alan

any body got the number to a hotline i am going to need it i think

  • Texas_Rocks

Anybody else want to support Wash for letting Grilli start the inning… You CANT give the Yankees any leeway in their stadium. They are the epitomy of a Snow Ball Team. Once they get the ball rolling, it’s hard to stop

  • Rudy

    Dying here.

  • Rangers Fan

Why on earth did he go straight off-speed there…not good pitch calling there.

  • Lamar in PA

Get CJ up in the pen?

  • RAT

The Rangers have had a lot of terrible losses of late… They need to be like Millwood and battle through this, I’m tired of the whole “bounce back” talk, we need a winning streak.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Don’t worry. Cano has to bat and he’s poison with RISP. Hitting about .380 with no one on and .200 with RISP. Double play machine.

  • scooper

Then it should be a save situation. And I think you are right. As soon as I typed “on deck” it didn’t sound right.

  • RAT

    *sarcasm with the battle talk.

  • IrishP1

Oh, and just to pour salt on this open wound, the Angels just took the lead against Detroit….

  • Rudy

@Texas: Yes, I do. Grilli needs to get those outs. That’s his job. If he doesn’t do his job, it’s not Wash’s fault. Wash pulled Grilli as soon as it was obvious he wasn’t going to do his job.

  • Evan Grant

Posada, Cano, Swisher combined 1-for-19 in career against Francisco.

  • scooper

    Yes, get C.J. up.

  • Rangers Fan

Frankie has derailed a season before…can he do it again?

  • alan

whywhy god must this keep happenning please no!!!!!!111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • IrishP1

WHAT THE HELL DID WE DO TO PISS OFF THE BASEBALL GODS?! WHAT?!

  • Evan Grant

Make that 2-for-20. When Jorge Posada beats out an infield single, you know things are going very badly.

  • Ryans Dad

DO you bring CJ in here? FF is missing the mit badly

  • Rangers Fan

It’s gonna happen. FF not only doesn’t have his “best stuff” tonight, he doesn’t have anything.

  • Rudy

Who do we put in now??? Feldman???

  • Texas_Rocks

Is it really that hard to get an out… Someone really pissed off the Baseball Gods

  • CB

    how does this happen

  • The Golden One

Whether he holds on or not, momentum has been lost.

  • IrishP1

I don’t wanna get the wild card if this is what we’re gonna get….

  • Jack Daddy

the season ended tonight. goodnight everyone.

  • Ryans Dad

If you wanna have a chance at winning this game you get CJ in there post haste.

  • Evan Grant

This seems impossible, but all the hits Yankees are getting are the same two-out hits the Rangers piled up in their five-run fifth. The problem: Yankees have already scored four, have two on and no outs.

  • Fred

Now, the bigger question is: is Franky Frank truly equipped to be a closer on a contender? I doubt it, sadly. I also fear CJ in these situations. Answer? Don’t think Feliz can do it every day.Don’t think we have a good answer

  • alan

i already no the enidng i cant take it why why why why why why

  • Lamar in PA

    ONE down!

  • IrishP1

    Nice bunt, pansy.
Evan, what is FF’s era now?

  • The Golden One

Nice break, but still a long way too go.

  • Rangers Fan

Frankie is no longer the closer, he can’t be.

  • CB

How can you ever trust Frankie after this crap

  • RAT

I want to turn it off… but I’m a glutton for punishment, I’m a diehard fan through and through. Can’t get myself to miss the end of this good or bad.

  • Tony

I am not the type to place blame on Wash without giving him his due. That being said, he totally mismanaged his bullpen tonight. With O’Day pitching as well as he did, why bring in Grili who didnt show anything last time. Once the first 2 runners got on in the 9th, I had a bad feeling and I dont usually get those.

  • Texas_Rocks

I can’t see the game… I’m supposed to leave for home already… How Can I leave until I know what happens… Or do we already know what’s going to happen….

  • Rangers Fan

Just throwin out there…this ump has sucked.

  • IrishP1

I shave my head daily and I’ve lost more hair in the last 15 minutes than I have the last two days combined….

    ho. ly. crap.

  • Lamar in PA

    Woo-F’in-Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Old Man

Hey guys, just got home – how are the Rangers doing?

  • The Golden One

Frankie was ok. He got squeezed and didn’t give up some dinks and dunks. Whew. Hey, maybe we’re over the Oakland and Boston type losses.

  • alan

i beg you baseball gods please dont let this happen to uis again pleaase i beg you yes prayers answered

  • RAT

    Wow, what a game guys…

  • Evan Grant

Keep it here for a few moments, I’ll be back with a post-game show soon.

  • Jason O.

    OMG!!!

  • IrishP1

That being said, they gave us that one. Thanks, umps…

  • Dan-drus

    Elvis!Elvis!Elvis!

  • Lamar in PA

Now that the chaos is over, I should point out that it’s always dangerous to bring the closer into a mid-inning, runners-on, non-save situation no matter who he is. They’re just not wired for that. Luckily, it all worked out in the end.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Wow, what an ending! Congratulations, all.

  • jcouch

no,YES had angle that showed Elvis beating the runner back

  • Rangers Fan

Good…make up for that putrid strike zone

  • RAT

I was ready to be pissed off the rest of the night, now I’m kind of grinning ear-to-ear.

  • scooper

@PTRF: that’s pretty gracious for a Yankees’ fan. See you tomorrow?

  • Ryans Dad

@Scooper form earlier, 1 year old

  • JustSaying

can you believe the shift in the center of gravity to andrus holland and feliz……i’m just fine the leadership I see from them…….been a fairly quick transition but their impact is undeniable………

  • Fred

    I sure wish Franky Framk
had Feliz’s stuff or Millwood’s balls. I fear he may be 0-2, as we look at the future.
btw, Ranks announcers bitching about final call, but gave MY player of game

  • scooper

I think the record is something like 818. We can get it!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Yes, I will be here tomorrow. It was fun tonight…well kind of.

  • TEUFELI

Boy, the result doesnt change the simple fact that Washington made absolutely HORRIBLE decisions with regards to the use of the pitching staff. He has NO feel for when a pitcher has it or has lost it. Neftali’s use (burning him for a day), not getting someone up in the 9th, etc….wow. As positive as “being in it in August when we didn’t expect it in April” (as JD said in his DMN chat today) is fun and worthy of credit…some of his “eyeball test” decisions CANNOT be ignored. I think questions about his decisions are not “un-American” (shout out to Pelosi – this is a joke) or unwarranted.

Again…great win, but Ron really wreaks of…to use a football analogy…”playing not to lose.”

He is making decisions for the wrong reasons I believe (to make his later decisions easier).

  • The Beer Guy

Whew, that was a close one. Pretty funny to only read the comments from the bottom of the 9th once the game was over. Everyone was quite sure it was over ;) To be honest, so was I.

Anyway, about Grilli: Texas_Rocks says you can’t give the Yankees any leeway at home. So what are you supposed to do? Pitch Feliz every inning of relief for 3 games? If it’s a 1 or 2 run game, I leave O’Day in there. It’s a 5 run lead, you’ve already used up Feliz, why not save O’Day and turn to Grilli or Mathis? Grilli, by the way, a guy who probably 100% of you were raving about until tonight.

  • Jason O.

Tonight gets my vote for both the Best Win and Worst Win of the year…in the same game.

Baseball is a crazy game eh?

That being said, Wash screwed this up. Leave O’Day in to go 1-2-3 and get out of town without wasting FF and losing all momentum gained by a great offensive performance.

THANK GOD for Dutch Oven tomorrow…he is the one guy other than Feldman that I would like going tomorrow after this crazy game tonight. And he’s 22.

    Happy Birthday Elvis!

  • southwick

Irish, there were plenty of missed calls at the plate, so I call it even.

  • Tom B

Okay, Where does Jack Daddy go when he walks out on a Rangers win? And that is how BullPens are destructed. Just think if we didn’t have Feliz in the middle.

  • scooper

@RyansDad: that’s what I was thinking, but I wasn’t sure. I assume he is going to be a Rangers’ fan?

  • Bobby in Bryan

Oh my gosh! I was watching the telecast on Suddenlink with Cabrea batting, and the signal goes off at ten when the lease to FXSW was up! I go online to follow the at-bat on ESPN Gamecast, and RANGERS WIN!

  • Rangers Fan

Young and not Elvis? That’s kind of dumb.

  • Ryans Dad

    I sure hope he is.

  • Apples

biggest story is Who were the hotties sitting right behind mclemore??

  • The Beer Guy

The only problem I had with the bullpen use by Wash was leaving Feliz in for 2 innings. I’d like to have him for tomorrow, too. But for the most part, people need to stop blaming the manager for a player’s inability to perform.

  • scooper

@TomB: Jack Daddy never really walks out – he just says that he does. He always jumps back into the conversation later. I bet he’ll be back tonight!

  • Ryans Dad

I give Player of the Game to Chris Davis, he in effect picked up the 3/10 split tonight by benching Blalock and sending Jones to the DL in one move. Pretty slick.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Beer Guy: I agree with your 10:10 post. At some point a manager has to trust that his guys can handle a 5 run lead. If you have to burn your best guys when you have that kind of lead then something’s wrong.

  • scooper

@beerguy: I really don’t think they will use Feliz on back-to-back days. He only did it once in the minors and I don’t think they want to take a chance with his arm.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Also, in all my complaining about Joba I failed to give credit to the hitters. They did what they should have done. Laid off the crap and hit the pitches they got when the count got in their favor. Nice job.

  • scooper

@RyansDad: Great Point! Not to mention that he had a great game at the plate and in the field, too.

  • Tom B

@Scooper, Like a TRUE Seamhead should;-))

  • The Beer Guy

@PTRF: Absolutely, and believe me that no one would be complaining if Grilli had gone 1-2-3 there. “Way to go Grilli!”, they’d have said. So why blame the manager when he doesn’t go 1-2-3?

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: Good point, but do you think this means he’ll be an option for Thursday? 42 pitches, I don’t know…maybe only if it’s really close?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Agree about Feliz. You have to think long-term. Wasn’t he a starter in the minors? Or did I hear that wrong? If he was a starter then you can’t start using him in back-to-back days. At least not yet. In the playoffs it may be a different story.

  • DC

For once i can’t complain about Wash. O’Day has now pitched in 4 games in a row with one day off . They had a five run lead Grilli is supposed to be able to handle that.

  • scooper

@PTRF: Damn, you’re magnanimous! Absolutely right, but also magnanimous.

  • Fred

@Golden-Losers always have the breaks go gainst them. Like CJ said, after he blew a 3 run lead save: “well, I broke a lot of bats”. Winners make their own breaks. Franky Frank has not looked or acted like a closer since May. Still hurt? Mental?? (he certainly has the background for it). Bad breaks? Certainly seem to have been a lot of them lately.

  • Tom B

Any win is a good win. Next week they will all look the same. Just another boring ‘W’

  • The Beer Guy

@Tom B: hehe, tell that to Josh Lewin, who actually sounded breathless! :D

  • fluaggie

This would have been heartbreak city tonight…just an unbelievable win. I kept thinking if they could just get one out and a double play ball this could all be over. That wasn’t exactly the type of double play I was picturing though. I thought the guy looked safe at second base but I also thought Frankie and some of our other pitchers were getting squeezed in the strike zone, which obviously has a big impact on what type of pitch they can throw in a certain situation.

Great win! Let’s take another one tomorrow. If we can take one of the next two we will have made it through the toughest remaining stretch of the season playing .500 ball. We have a favorable schedule the rest of the way.

  • Auditor

Almost at a record for comments.

Gotta love 6 pm games on the east coast.

  • Fred

Why is Grilli on the roster if he can’t handle a 4 run leas? Those who are bashing Wash on this one are just silly

  • JustSaying

what some are overlooking is after watching yankee after yankee have great ABs it points to an obvious fact…….the yankees are a very good team with very good players…..but we have had a-fraud and tex and we know there will always be an uneasy locker room when they’re around……..we have better leadership and ours is more natural……nice showcase of youth!

  • Auditor

I think we are about 10 away.

  • TD

    YES! Thank you Rangers!

  • Ryans Dad

My eyeball tells me that FF isn’t spinning the ball well right now. Not seeing a lot of life on the fastball. At least not until it gets in the strikezone.

  • scooper

@PTRF: Feliz was a starter until maybe around June (I don’t remember for sure when he went to the ‘pen). They put him in the ‘pen because they planned to bring him up, they weren’t sure his secondary pitches were good enough yet, but they thought he could contribute as a reliever right away. I think there is still a chance that he goes back to starting next year (IMO).

  • Auditor

Still a game and half back in the WC standings, but the schedule should be easier the next two weeks after they get back.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Thanks for the Feliz info. Also, if magnanimous is good then I’m it. ;)

  • scooper

@Auditor: I think we may have the record, but I’m not totally sure what it is. Do you remember?

  • DC

We almost hit the record during the game too. Record included alot of talk after.

  • scooper

@PTRF: I’m dating myself – it is an old-fashioned word, but I kind of like it.

  • The Beer Guy

Of the two remaining games, I think Thursday’s is tougher. We don’t seem to play well in early afternoon games, and Burnett has been rough on us this year. Let’s win tomorrow and make it easy!

  • Auditor

WE did it. New record (prior record for comments was 821 for the Friday 8/7 game vs LaA).

    Congrats all.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @scooper: I gotcha! Just playin’.

  • The Beer Guy

LA 3-2 over Detroit, top 5th…come on Tigers!

  • scooper

@DC: no question, that is the most comments we’ve ever had during a game. Some games we start an hour early, some games we end an hour late, some we do both!

  • Auditor

I am most interested in seeing how Holland does under the bright lights tomorrow (in NYC and on ESPN).

Should be a true test for Wonder Boy.

  • scooper

    @PTRF: I figured, but I wasn’t positivt!

  • scooper

    uh, positive.

  • Ryans Dad

I find it ironic that Texas will face off against New York in the Little League World Series playoff tomorrow. Foreshadowing?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@auditor: The Yanks have played very poorly on national televised games this year.

  • scooper

I think Wonder Boy will do fine. I think he’s getting a little swagger. He’s had some big wins and I think he knows he belongs in the big leagues.

  • Tom B

Call it Wash’s Revenge. There was no other way he could have kept everyone engaged for the many sponsors if he had played it straight.

  • Evan Grant

@ALL: And welcome to record-ville, once again. Cornerians Rule! Post-game show coming up momentarily. Will have a column on this in the morning.

  • Auditor

    @Beer Guy,

Not putting my hopes for an LaA collapse. After Det they have 4 vs Oak, 6 vs Sea and 4 vs KC in a row.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

In other baseball news, is anyone following what’s happening in NL West? Rockies were 15.5 behind LAD in June. Now 3 back and in the first of a 3 game series with them. Had a two run lead going to ninth, but blew it. Man-Ram with a game-tying single with two outs bottom 9.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    sorry, top 9.

  • scooper

Well, I’m gone for now. Talk to y’all tomorrow!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Have a good night, scooper. See ya tomorrow.

  • fluaggie

It stunk that the game wasn’t in HD tonight…against the Yanks. What’s up with that?

  • becca

happy win for the good guys! sorry i missed all your magic tonight.

  • Tom B

I copied my coupon so now what do I do. Proceed to the back yard and wait for a Flying Saucer? They come by here all the time.

  • Auditor

    @PTRF,

The thing I find unique about the Colo rise (just the same miracle, fire the manager and then win win win for the 03 marlins) is that Jim Tracy was blamed for a lot for bad managing when he was with the Pirates.

A goat in one place and a guineas in another.

  • scooper

@PTRF: one last comment – FF was NOT credited with a save.

  • Evan Grant

@Tom B: Take it to the Flying Saucer or Flying Fish (multiple locations for your $5 off tomorrow). I’m partial to the Flying Fish at Preston Center. Grits and Gumbo is a personal favorite.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@scooper: Thanks for the update. After our conversation about it I seemed to remember that there is a limit to how big a lead you can have, even if the tying run is in the hole.

@Auditor: It is amazing, isn’t it? You wonder if he changed his approach to managing, is it better talent, new players that understand him and are motivated by him better, some combination of the above, etc.

  • Tom B

No, You can’t start the fire and then call the fireman to put it out and call it a save. Batter in the hole to tie to be a save.

  • Rangers Fan

how is he not credited with a save? It definitely became a save oppertunity.

  • Tom B

@Evan, I’ll tell’m you sent me. They say, “Huh?”

  • Auditor

    For all,

Since most herein are Rudy J bashers, how do we explain the plate discipline exhibited by Josh and Chris tonight. Just amazing.

Was Rudy’s plan all along to swing for the fences for the first 4 months then fool everyone with plate discipline the final 2. Basically, fool the scouts. Will need to watch the next few weeks.

  • Ryans Dad

One thing to consider, I have visited two ballparks this year. The Ballpark here of course and Coors Field back in June. Good luck charm? I think the records speak for themselves.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Tom B: That is not entirely correct. If you have a 4 run lead going to ninth, first guy gets on, then bring in your closer it is a save opp. Now, if the closer comes in with 4 run lead and lets leadoff guy get on, then it is NOT a save opp.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: I believe that the scouts were probably very adament about the need to be patient against Joba. He’s had control issues all year. Throws WAY too many pitches.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

The Rockies had to play 14 last night. Now in the 10th. They’re wishing it was Sept already. Need some arms.

  • Ryans Dad

Do people who call into post game shows have to fail an IQ test?

  • DC

@Auditor I believe CD had to goto OKC to learn that. Rudy couldn’t help him.

  • Auditor

This is what I found for google search for baseball saves:

    here’s the rule:

10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

    (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
    (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
    (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

    (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
    (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or
    (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I feel like I’m talking to myself now. Oh, well. What else is new?

  • Auditor

@DC, I think RJ would have given him instructions on what it would take to get back to the Bigs, no?

  • A. Watcher

Listened to the Yankee broadcast on XM. Terrible.

    Neftali Perez.

The Rangers have stated Perez will be their closer next year.

Frankie is a free agent this year (is that true?) and the job is Perez’s.

Did not know how the Rangers got O’Day. They figured it out on his third batter.

and on, and on, and on.

  • Rangers Fan

Uhh Rudy did not help Chris one bit. He gets zero credit for helping him get back. ZERO. In fact, according to reports, Rudy all but threw his hands up and didn’t have any idea. Telling, huh?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: Thanks for the clarification. I don’t know why I thought tying run could be in the hole. Now I know he must be on deck.

  • Auditor

Intersting, 3-3 LAA and Det game.

  • Rangers Fan

@A. Watcher: That’s probably because the announcer spends all his time coming up with cheesy catch phrases for homeruns.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@A. Watcher: The Yankees radio team (John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman) are tough to listen to. In NY they are polarizing. You either love ‘em or hate ‘em. A lot of people hate ‘em.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Wow, Rockies got leadoff guy on in 10th representing winning run. Next guy bunts and pitcher throws it down RF line. Winning run on 3rd with no outs. Fly ball and COL is within 2 games of LAD.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Instead he strikes out. Now will probably walk guy and load bases. Then LAD needs DP to get out of it.

  • Auditor

@PRRF, are you watching the Col game right now?

Bottom of the 10th, 1 out runner on 2nd and 3rd. Here. We. Go.

  • Auditor

    Intentional walk… bases loaded.

  • Auditor

Wow, nice win by the Rockies. Back to back nights for walk offs.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: Yep, just watched it. Tulo with walk off hit. Wow. Dodgers collars have to be getting a little tight.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I watched the last 7 innings of Rockies vs. Giants last night. Two big wins for COL. ATL and SFG lost tonight. Building a lead in WC and about to catch LAD for division. Amazing.

  • Auditor

Thought Tulo was about to break into a HR trot.

Nice win. Odd, just not a LAD fan with Manny on the team.

BTW, were was Broxton tonight? He has not pitched since Aug 22.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Not sure about Broxton, but would guess that they were saving him to use if they got a lead in the top of an inning. Don’t like to bring in a closer in that situation in 10th. Most don’t handle it well.

  • Jack Daddy

Jack Daddy never walks out on a Ranger game. I just like to be dramatic. But I did close the site. And I did 100% think this was a L. I almost wept when we won. I also went back and read everything, so relax, relax.

A Watcher – FF is a Free Agent after next year. CJ after 2011. Byrd this year. Every other Ranger (other than OV, Pudge, JJ) are locked up at least through 2013.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Also, Granderson of the Tigers just hit either a leadoff triple or HR in the top 7 against LAA. It’s under review.

  • Jack Daddy

sorry, Hamilton and Feldman are FA after 2012.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    It’s a 3B. Game tied 3-3 in top 7…for now.

  • Jack Daddy

and of course MIllwood is free after next year (if he pitches 180 this year, otherwise free after 09). Bottom line – this team is together for a long time and the only 2 real difficult decisions are Byrd and CJ (I think they let FF walk, in an easy decision).

  • Ryans Dad

    Was a homer PTRF, it’s 4-3

  • Auditor

    @Jack,

Millwood is at 161 innings after tonight. Just hope when he hits 180 he does not turn into a pumpkin.

    LaA losing…

  • Ryans Dad

Update: Rangers postgame was wrong, it wasn’t a homer, but somehow it’s 5-3

  • Jack Daddy

@auditor – Holland is a big game warrior. He rises up. He’s like the pool house shark that gets better when money is on line. I feel pretty good about tomorrow. 7 IP, 3 runs. 8 Ks 1BB.

  • JustSaying

not sure if ff ever totally recovered from the a’s incident…..i know i thought he was more dominant before……

  • Auditor

    It looks like:

    Granderson tripled, then
    Polanco tripled, then
    Ordonez hit sacrifice fly

    Det 5 LaA 3

  • JustSaying

neftali has to be a more difficult decision…..it makes cj less formitable or so the rangers think…….

  • Jack Daddy

i agree with Evan – Granderson would be on my very, very short list of players I would love to add to this team.

    1. Granderson
    2. Abreu
    3. Joe Nathan
    4. Vlad the Impaler
    5. Curtis Wilkerson

  • Jack Daddy

Granderson did triple (though he did HR in the 5th). Polanco followed with his own triple. Than SF by Mags. 5-3 going to bottom of 7th.

  • Auditor

I don’t know about how ESPN ranks the depth of the starting pitchers for the Rangers. In order, they have:

    Millwood
    Feldman
    Hunter
    Holland
    Nippert

I would have Holland ahead of Hunter… at least right now. But Hunter does have the lowest starter ERA.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

If you need 3 starters for the ALDS, who do you want for your 3?

  • Jack Daddy

justsayin – FF wasn’t hit hard tonight at all. this is a good hitting team. FF left the curve up to Godzilla (and is fortunate he didn’t hit it out), but otherwise, really didn’t make a bad pitch. The umpire had a tight zone and wasn’t giving the corner, low and away.

FF may indeed be less dominating. But I thought his stuff was fine tonight. His FB probably didn’t seem so fast to their hitters after 2+ innings of Happy.

  • Jack Daddy

    well I’d say:

    Feldman gm1
    Holland gm2
    Millwood gm 3, at BPiA
    Hunter gm 4
    Feldman gm 5

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

So, Jack, you’d use 4 instead of 3? And it’s interesting how Millwood has fallen. Can’t say I blame you, though.

  • Auditor

Millwood (3.63 era) and Feldman (3.87) are a given.

I guess it comes down to if it is a must win (Rangers down 0-2) I would take Hunter as he has a better home ERA than Holland (considering they are the WC and game 3 is at Texas).

  • Jack Daddy

Yes I would use 4. As much of a Holland fan as I am (well documented) and although I would start Holland in game 2 (saving Millwood for home, where he has been a beast in his career), I COULD UNDERSTAND the logic of using Hunter instead of Holland, to give you Holland as a lefty in the pen. But, I prefer a 4 man rotatin, using both. In that case, I don’t care which of Holland or Hunter starts game 2/4. I think Holland has the best stuff, so I don’t think you “save” that and in 6 weeks, he should be that much better.

Bases loaded, 2 outs in LA.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Angels have bases loaded in 7th. Down 5-3. 2 outs.

  • Auditor

I agree with Jack, like Holland on the road to start game 2 (tomorrow will be a proxy assuming the Yanks have the best record and Tex wins the WC).

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    @Jack: I like your breakdown.

Tigers threw WP with bases loaded, but Abreu was thrown out at home. Inning over. Going to 8th at 5-3 Tigers.

  • Auditor

    Detroit dodges a bullet.

Bases loaded and a wild pitch, goes about halfway to the 3rd base dugout. Catcher gets to the ball and throws out the runner at home (IMO he looked save). Ump rings him up.

  • Jack Daddy

PTRF – I would start Millwood even if he was still pitching like the first half. 2 reasons: Feldman’s road performance and Millwood’s historical home performance.

wild pitch and abreu tagged out at plate by great throw from laird and tag by pitcher!

    watching on mlb.tv

  • Kaisersoze

Gratuitous Post just to make the post count an even 900.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Boy, if you could have Feliz coming out of the ‘pen as your righty and Holland coming in as your lefty, that would be nice. However, with Hollands stuff I would want him out there for more than an inning at a time. He needs to start.

  • Auditor

Abreu was out, better camera view after the commercial break. Poor slide at home though.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: I also wondered if he was safe. Never saw a definitive angle. Watching Tigers broadcast.

  • Jack Daddy

@auditer – it looked close live, but on replay, not really close at all. horrible slide by abreu. started it too soon and went wide with his lead leg, which never caught plate. pitcher did nice job of blocking plate and tagged back foot. huge play by Det.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Wow, Darren Oliver. He’s a former Ranger, isn’t he? I think his grandson is playiing minor league ball. He’s about 67 yrs old.

  • Auditor

    SF gets the win PTRF.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: Yeah, I just saw that. I saw that they were losing earlier and thought it was a final. Apparently, it wasn’t.

  • Auditor

Considering the Abreu slide, does anyone ever slide head first into home?

Some guys dive into 1st, almost always head first for 2nd and 3rd, but not home? hmmm.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I know that Halladay hasn’t looked great since the trading deadline, but the Yankees could have gotten him if they would have given the Jays Joba. Think they want a re-do? It just so happened that Joba had his 3 best starts of his career right before that and they wouldn’t pull the trigger.

  • Jack Daddy

I can’t figure out our bullpen. Since Feliz has been back, it should be our biggest weapon. And on many nights it has been. But it’s blown 4 games since then and almost 2 more:

    1. Oak in Feliz’ debut (the CJ meltdown to blow the collective 1 hitter)
    2. Boston on Friday.
    3. The Twins game that Hunter started.
    4. The Twins game that Feldman started.
    5. The Saturday game vs. TB (though the game was tied, so not reall blown, but still
    6. Tonight.

We need to get the pen set up. I believe we will.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: Too dangerous with fingers and catchers equipment. Also, there is typically more foot movement by the catcher/pitcher covering home and better chance of getting stepped on.

And no one should ever slide into 1st unless avoiding a tag.

  • Jack Daddy

@auditor – i don’t think they will go head first if the catcher is set up and blocking the plate. too easy to break a finger and you are going to get through the catcher. if the catcher has to move up to get the ball and the come back, you’ll see head first slides to sneak around it.

i’ve never heard this and just made it up, but it sounds good!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Jack: There’s a reason those guys are in the ‘pen instead of starting. All bullpens are going to go through tough stretches and have bad nights.

  • Jack Daddy

@ptrf – espn.com reported that Tor TURNED DOWN Buccholz, Masterson and Bowden (plus 2 good hitting prospects) because they insisted on getting Bard.

I don’t think any package NYY could offer around Joba could match that.

JP Ric. should be fired for turning that down. And tortured.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Kendry Morales drove one to the wall with one on in the eighth. It was caught with a leaping catch. Going to the ninth. 5-3 DET.

  • Jack Daddy

clete thomas with the amazing catch up against the wall to rob extra bases and get out of the inning!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

At the time the NY papers were saying that the Yanks had an offer on the table that JP would have taken if it included Joba or Phil Hughes. NY didn’t want to give up on either one of those guys becuase they are so young. If they had it to do over I have no doubt they’d throw Joba in now. He’s a headcase and accepts zero responsibility. Always has excuses and it seems like his teammates are getting tired of it.

  • JustSaying

@ all i think it would be more prudent to wait until late september to think about playoff rotations……
how about what should holland be focused on tommorrow? key of the game?

  • Auditor

LaA vs Det… bottome of the 9th. Here we go.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@JustSaying: The Yanks are very good at making a pitcher work. They can drive up pitch counts. He needs to throw strikes and trust his defense. Don’t give them any free baserunners. Pretty simple stuff.

  • Auditor

You know, for $5m in the offseason, Abreu has to be the best signing of all free agents in the class of 2009. Hands down.

  • Jack Daddy

justsaying – nah, too fun! if we wait to talk about it, may not get the chance!

Key to game tomorrow is the key to every Holland start:

command fastball early, get ahead in counts and finish hitters with the slider and change.

2 on, none out. Dang F. Rodney.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

LAA runners on corners. No outs.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Abreu is a steal. The Yanks let him go because they thought he would command too much money. Well, that and they were tired of his brutal defense. He is an offensive machine, though.

  • Auditor

    Beware the VLAD!

  • Auditor

9 hits for LaA tonight and only 1 as extra bases. Typical LaA.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Inning over. Ballgame over. Tigers win. The-e-e-e-e-e Tigers win!

  • Jack Daddy

abreu was the pickup of the winter, no doubt.

    Ballgame!!

  • Auditor

Wow, Rockies 18 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Papelbon’s an A$$. He’s always misunderstood when he makes stupid comments. Can’t stand him and that stupid stare.

  • Auditor

I have to nominate the Rockies as the best story of MLB 2009 (even though I am partial to the Rangers). Just amazing.

Also, the most underrated story of the season. If they could just move Denver to the East coast.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

@Auditor: And to think they started the run being 12 games UNDER .500. Now 18 over. Incredible. Imagine if they had just played .500 ball before going on the run. They’d be running away with the division.

  • Auditor

If the NYY and Tex game is on ESPN2, what the heck is on ESPN1?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

When they went to the WS in ’07 didn’t they win something silly like 20 of their last 23 games? I don’t remember the exact numbers, but it was silly.

  • Jack Daddy

in addition to the Michael Main note that somebody mentioned earlier (struck out the side in the first inning for the AZL Rangers), Martin Perez had his 3rd AA start. 5 IP, 4 H, 3K 0 R. 84 pitches, 56 strikes.

    Great night for the franchise.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Just looked it up…they went 20-8 in Sept ’07.

  • Auditor

We got bumped by the USA semi finals for the Little League World Series on ESPN1. Not sure if I am sad or happy about this.

  • Jack Daddy

ptrf – but you’re right, it was like 20 out of 21 or somesuch.

finally calmed down enough to go to bed.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Auditor, I saw that but didn’t have the heart to tell you. It’s not like everyone doesn’t have ESPN2 anyways. Not a big deal.

  • Auditor

Guess I have to pull for SAN ANTONIO!

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Good night, Jack. Gird up your loins for tomorrow.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Evan threw out a challenge of 950 comments for tonight. We’re almost there. Let’s get over the top before we retire for the night.

  • Auditor

I know. It is good to see the kids get to trump mlb. But I am thinking of the conversation someone in Bristol must have had regarding ratings: “okay, we put the nyy/tex game on 2 and and LLWS on 1. People love kids so we should get better ratings, right?”

But if this was an NFL game, the kids would be on ESPN Ocho.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

    Lol. You’re probably right.

  • Auditor

Just you and me PTRF. Let’s finish this.

Just checked, Vegas has set the Yanks as -183 favorites for tomorrow. That seems a little steep.

  • Auditor

As Rodney Dangerfield would say “no respect” for the Rangers.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I read a comment on the post-game blog that they want Neftali stretched out to be the long man for the playoffs. I think that is a waste. Usually your long man is needed when things are not going well. Why wouldn’t you want to have him available for every game, or every other game, instead of possibly just one worthless game in a series?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Well, the Yanks do have the best record in MLB and are playing at home. They score a ton of runs. Doesn’t surprise me that they are big favorites tomorrow. However, as a Yankee fan I’m not feeling easy about it. Holland has looked great and Pettitte struggles at home. He gets freaked out by the cheap homers to RF and it gets in his head.

  • Auditor

I agree. That is why we have Jennings. But we should get NF to the point where he can pitch back-to-back nights.

  • Auditor

Starting to get worried about Grilli.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

The Yankees have also won 11 or 12 series since the ASB. At least I believe that is the stat. If that is to continue they obviously must win tomorrow.

  • Auditor

Nice to see the Rangers on within the first 5 minutes of Sports Center. Uber rare.

Err, maybe it is because of who we played.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I meant to type 11 OF 12 series.

  • Auditor

And they had the final play… looks like Elvis did not turn the double play.

  • Auditor

I made the mistake of save vs safe at home earlier. Darn internet.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

I think that if they get into the playoffs any rules for Feliz will be thrown out the window. I think they’d use him everyday if the situation called for it.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Was Hairston safe at second? I thought so, but wasn’t sure if it was my bias.

  • Auditor

NF is like our David Price this year.

    Nice to have.

  • Auditor

ESPN did the little stop action thing and he was safe by a half of step from Elvis.

Sure this will go over well in NY.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

If he was indeed safe that is a huge break for TEX. Jeter would have been up, and he’s only hitting .392 for Aug. Would have had a chance to tie it up. Oh, well. Every game has close calls. You win some, you lose some.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

NY didn’t lose that game on that play. They lost the game becuase they couldn’t get anyone out.

  • Auditor

I agree, nice to see a call go to the Rangers.

Also, to me it seemed like FF was nailing the bottom half of the strike zone and not getting the calls he should. Game should not have been that close.

  • Auditor

What the heck is a Gigantes (the spelling on the front of the Giants uniform tonight)?

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Must be Latin night. Isn’t that Spanish for Giants?

It’s better than mistakenly having “Natinals” on your jersey.

  • Auditor

    Funny! Good point.

Even think the Redskins misspelled a name this past weekend. Must be something in the water.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Didn’t O’Day wear someone else’s uniform when he first got to Rangers? That’s funny, too.

  • Auditor

    Wow. Ted Kennedy died. Wow.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Auditor, it’s been fun. I must get some sleep. See ya tomorrow.

  • Auditor

    Think it was Kason Gabbard.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Wow, I didn’t hear that. I knew he was sick, but hadn’t heard the news.

  • Part Time Ranger Fan

Ok, I really must go now. See ya. Stop pulling me back in.

  • Auditor

Just a strange summer for famous deaths.

    Still, wow.

  • Auditor

    Good night PTRF.

  • Auditor

    Okay, one last post.

Guess the semi finals pairings for the Little League World Series.

    Texas vs New York.

    You heard it here first!

  • Tom B

The number is 975 and I had to contribute.

  • Tom B

@Auditor, You are up way past normal unless you are auditing The Dude From Afganistan.

  • Auditor

Not really, tore my MCL and am on the DL for another week. Rest, rest, rest.

  • Tom B

A mere dozen or two from the fabled thousand post category which would bring honor to all and running out of steam.

  • Auditor

Okay Tom B, you have replace PTRF. Let’s do it.

  • Auditor

Okay Tom B, you have replaced PTRF. Let’s do it.

  • Auditor

    Sorry, s/b replace = replaced.

  • Auditor

err, sorry for the double post.

  • Tom B

It is a Marathon. Now at 980 and only grim determination can carry the Rangers Rock Face Climbing championship home to 1000.

  • Tom B

    How about Them Rangers?

  • Auditor

It is a good win. Get the feeling the Yanks will mount a comeback and win the next two (maybe even with help from the Umps).

  • Tom B

It is now about 15 seconds between hitting ‘Send’ and the computer registering it. I’m thinking some crazy intern has been told to stay until the last poster. He is starving and worn out but he perserveres. Dang Brave Soul

  • Auditor

Just need to keep it close till after the current road trip.

  • Auditor

Around midnight that started happening. Could not post for awhile. But Jack and PTRF could. It was odd.

    Might be due to Firefox.

    As if.

  • Tom B

I’m sorry your transmission was garbled here on Mt. Ranger. I think you must retransmit.
Tomorrows news just came out. 4″ Headlines: “Rangers beat Yankees” Dateline 26 August 2009. Well you read it here first.

  • Tom B

I think that must be some weird forecast for Wednesday’s game. Stand-by for details.

  • Auditor

We need to get a mathematician in here. What are the odds that the Yanks/Rangers would be playing on the same day that the little league world series semi finals between the team from texas and new york would be playing (and at the exact same time)?

Off topic, did someone win the $250m Mega Millions tonight? And if the winner is from Texas or NY I might pull a Edvard Munch and Scream.

  • Tom B

If the Rangers play .500 baseball the rest of the way they will be brushing 90 wins. I think we can do better than 50-50.

  • Auditor

I agree. Once we get back from the current road trip, the win/loss record of our opponents is to our favor. Plus the excellent record vs the LaA.

  • Auditor

ESPN is going to have a field day with the blown call for the final out.

  • Tom B

Let’s just make it a Texas Two Step Sweep. Big and Small.

  • Tom B

I thought Couch in Conn said the replay showed OUT.

  • Auditor

ESPN stop motion has it as a clear non-OUT.

  • Tom B

You win some, you lose some and some get rained out. It’s over, we have the “Inglorious Basterds> Scalp to prove it. Case Closed.

  • Auditor

Oh well, the Umps will be against us tomorrow.

  • Tom B

If you can’t see it immediately anything can be edited out. I wouldn’t trust a CPA to figure it out now.

  • Tom B

The last count was 1002 so they can work on it all night long. I say we come back and sweep all three. Holland in a complete game shutout.

  • Auditor

Biggest question I have is will AJ come back and play for the Rangers in 2009… don’t think it will happen.

  • Tom B

Now, I must bid you farewell. You know how these long games just exhaust one.

  • Auditor

I agree. The next major milestone is if we can get 1k plus comments IN GAME.

  • Tom B

I see him gone along with Blalock. Jennings and Guardado. Byrd is a toss-up. They might even trade Millwood for another arm or two.
They are so deep on the Farm that you use’m or lose’m. All not Arbitration ready. Cheap Baseball.

  • Auditor

I cannot see Byrd back. The outfield is too “full” with Hambone, Murph, Borbon, Cruz. Byrd is, I believe 32, and on the downside of his career.

Also, he has Boras as his agent I believe. Nothing ever comes good out of Boras client in Free Agency.

  • Auditor

Seems the record will be 1009 Comments. Good job team IC!

  • Tom B

Spoken like a true Auditor but again you missed ‘One Bean.’ It is now 1010. Easier to digitize.

  • Auditor

    Good point Tom B.

  • Auditor

    Let’s keep this going!

  • Auditor

Great, now Tom B will disappear for the next 20 minutes.

  • Rangers!

Don’t worry Auditor, I here. It is only 9 am in Europe. I keep you company.

  • Rangers!

Game does not seem as close if you read the papers/score. Either way, Rangers Win!

  • Auditor

    No need, still here.

    Tired though…

  • A. Watcher

Isn’t it nice to be thinking our two problems for next year will be too many major league quality outfielders and too many starting pitchers?

With injuries, there are NEVER too many starting pitchers. Some are gonna have to be down on the farm again.

  • Tom B

@Auditor, Are You that Energizer Bunny I remember? Doesn’t your battery ever run down? You are now entertaining Europe. Last night it was Afganistan. You are truly a man for all seasons. I salute you or will lead the burial detail. Lead On, Mistro

  • Auditor

Never runs down. Had to go for the record and then some.

  • Old Man

    last!

  • Ellis Maragh

The best is really Justin Bieber, he is so sweet!
