6:15: The home run pool remains open for your diving and enjoyment.
6:22: C Jarrod Saltalamacchia had no issues throwing to bases during a workout today in Minneapolis and then boarded a flight back to Dallas. He will begin what he hopes is a three-game rehab assignment for the RoughRiders on Saturday. If all goes well, he could be activated on Tuesday for the doubleheader against Toronto. And now off to the set. Back soon. Please, talk amongst yourselves.
7:37: Having some technical difficulties here. But as we were on the air, reports were buzzing that Scott Kazmir was being traded (or has been traded to the Angels). Lot of comments and questions in the comments section about what Rangers would have had to give up to get Kazmir. It’s fruitless talk. The Rangers couldn’t have taken on Kazmir’s long-term contract.
7:56: The Rangers have signed INF-OF Ryan Freel to a minor league contract and assigned him to Oklahoma City. Expect Freel to join the club after Sept. 1 as an extra utility man.
8:04: Barring injury, it’s only a matter of time before 2B Ian Kinsler becomes the second 30-30 man in Rangers history. Tonight, he became the fifth 25-25 man (does that make him 50-Cent?). With his first-inning steal of second, he has 28 homers and 25 steals.
8:23: So after that first inning in which the Twins jumped on a couple of sliders, RHP Tommy Hunter has pitched three scoreless. He’ll go to the fifth. Hunter has 66 pitches through four, so that’s pretty manageable. The thing I like about Hunter – well, I like a lot of things – but the thing I like most is he shows all the traits of an innings-eater. He’s pitched at least five innings in all 11 of his starts this season and he’s pitched into the sixth in all but two of them. He may not have overpowering stuff, but he’s got all kinds of moxie.
8:50: Tommy Hunter gets hit in the chest by a Justin Morneau liner. Recovers to get the out and it seems to knock a little bit more break into his curve. Threw some very sharp ones to work another 1-2-3 inning. By the way, he now has qualified for a quality start.
@evan
Any info on Kazmir being obtained by LAA?
@Chadb – There are too many conflicting sources/stories regarding the transaction.
MLB is saying it’s dead.
ESPN and CBS are saying it’s still on.
Something’s got to give….
Let’s wait and see if Salty has any problems throwing it back to the pitcher in Frisco.
Looks like Kaz to the LaA is a done deal.
http://blogs.tampabay.com/rays/2009/08/kazmir-hasnat-heard-anything-yet.html
Evan you are looking very dapper tonight
Evan, NO! What are you wearing on TV right now? Please get some dressing help!
Hunter starts slow so Auditor might have to come in and give him a hand, usually about the 3rd or 4th his “Stuff” kicks in. We could use a good start tonight. Maybe walk Mauer and Morneau just to keep the damage down. Just points to ponder albeit bad ones.
We can’t win’m all if we don’t win this one. We play crappy on carpet and indoors.
Evan–who would be some comparable minor leaguers that the Rangers would have to include in a trade for Kazmir?
I think it’s interesting 2 contending teams make a deal like that…
Jimmy, the Kazmir deal— it’s on!
Jays just went up 3-0 in the top of the 2nd vs. the Red Sox
Did Beckett give up a bomb?
blue jays 3-0 hr hill top 2nd
Dang, he has been giving up a ton of home runs his late few starts…
yes he did
@Gun Dog….yeah, that’s the test, it wasn’t the bases he was having trouble throwing to, it was the pitcher…
@Tom B, I tend to think of myself as a closer. But maybe, take one for the team, and help out the starter.
At some point, either during Sept or in winter ball, we need to put Salt thru a stress test of playing regularly for a stretch and learn if the rehab program is working, or if rest has just hidden the effects of his TOS and he needs surgery. Much better to have the surgery during the off-season and have him ready for next year.
Ok guys, I have been saying it for a while but the angels couldnt keep the offensive pace up.
Forget the wild card. I think we are in good shape to win the west.
I’m not sure I’d say we are in good shape…but I certainly think we can make at the division.
If boston loses or la loses any time here on out and we dont win those loses are going to magnifed and we must take advantage of every oppurtunity that is given to us
Hey Anaheim – DESPERATION is a stinky cologne….
Didn’t realize Cruz was struggling that badly againt lefties.
Greetings from Westbound I-30 in East Texas. Go Rangers!
I think it’s weird Hamilton hits lefties better than righties. Everyone maks such a big deal about the lefty lefty match up…
Errr. make that EASTbound.
So does Tampa have someone to put in the rotation in Kazmir’s spot? Seems weird to do a financial move at this point.
Hunter is so hittable these days…
well this doesnt look good at all and is it just me or watching nellie cruz play the outfield is like watching a kid ride his bike for the first time
Hope the league’s not catching up with Hunter. Time to adjust.. Love the kid
Seems like the offense is going to need to come through and win another one for us.
Yeah, they got Wade Davis and another prospect they’ve been wanting to bring up.
Not a good start for Hunter….
Guys lets face it… every team has another team that they own and vice-versa…. The Rangers own the Red Sox and Angels this season, but the Twins and Tigers OWN the Rangers… IF and it’s a HUGE iF, we win 1 out of three, then I’ll be content
My history isn’t that hot, but, have the Rangers ever done good in the dome?
Team’s got their work cut out for them. Get the bats out, guys…
I would love to see kaz go to the angels if they have to give up 3 prospects and kaz is still owed something like 23 mil.
He velosity is down, his k’s are down and his era is up.
I know this is going to sound wierd…I’ve never been sold on Hunter. He got on a role…but he always had so many on base you knew it was going to catch up with him. When I thought about the rotation for next year…I wasn’t ready to write his name in with a Sharpie. I wanna be wrong, but I’m not sure this guy is as good as he looked for a while.
@alan-I’m not a fan of Nellie as an OF. Think he’s overrated by the cyber folk.
But, hard to fault him for not grabbing one half way up the big baggie.
here what it is like to be a ranger fan hunter gets lit up and is struggling majorly and we go up against some spare pitcher who I am sure will turn out to be good and he will shut us down such is a life as a ranger fan
Lets not give up on hunter yet(I know yall arnt).
He will always put guys on, he always has but he will also give you innings and more times than not will keep you in games.
If he is the 4th guy that is what you want, a 12-14 win guy that also eats 200 innings.
@Fred: Completely agree. I’ve always thought Cruz was better suited for the DH spot. The stats people whip out some rating that says he’s a better OF, but the others seems to catch a lot more balls than Cruz.
In other news, I hate our LHP line up. And why in the world is TT batting 7th…he hasn’t hit his way out of a paper bag this roadtrip.
The Rangers couldn’t have taken on Kazmir’s long-term contract.
okay we are now at 1010 strikeouts for the year and is it me or the team looks flat and they have no life to them and we are in a pennant race right???
Evening folks! I need to stop missing games and arriving home late…seems like recently every time I do that, we suffer. I’m starting to take this personally!
I really hope Hunter isn’t reverting to average or being caught up to, as Fred notes.
@Rangers Fan-57 hits in 57n innings and a whp of 1.19. Not sue which Hunter you’ve been seeing with so many MOB
Hunter is 6-1 since the end of June. The Rangers are in contention for a playoff berth. He’s OK with me!
Oh man…is this going to be one of those night? “Duensing as Cy Young candidate” nights, that is.
Evan, it looks like kaz is still owed 23.5 mil and he gets a 800K bonus if traded.
Kaz is 8-7 with a 5.92era, should fit right in with the other angel pitchers.
@Irish: Rangers are 69-83 at Metrodome all-time.
The thing about Hunter is that while the experts may have missed on him, they weren’t going to have missed on him so badly that this was a guy who’d post 2.00 ERAs for entire seasons. And it takes some rocky outings to get 2.00 up to a 3.50 we’d be pretty grateful for.
When is Wash going to realize that regardless of the lefty/righty thing, having Borbon in the lineup(pudge behind the plate and either him or murph at DH) is better than dragging Teagarden’s corpse up to the batters box. Its as if he closes his eyes at the start of his swing. Regardless of pitch or placement, there’s Taylor, mindlessly whiffing. Hell, at this point I’d rather let Tommy Hunter hit and DH for Teagarden if we have to save Pudge’s knees. That guy is a AA talent at best, and I like the guy. Seriously, I was a junior at Texas in 2005.
i agree beer guy that it is madening that a spare pitcher will shut us down and we will half to hear all game long from josh and tom man he is really pitching good blahblahblah and frankly I dont buy it if you want to be a playoff team you come in here and you take care of business but if you want to be a pretender than you do just what we are doing tonight
Its nice to know the pitcher can throw to first and not have it go into right field.
And the Rangers could have claimed Kazmir on waivers to block the deal. JD should have no complaint if Kazmir joins the Angels.
@obagain: Which is why the Rangers have/had no shot at him.
alan, it is like the stars a few years ago, every game the opposing goalie was playing lights out, at some point you have to realize that is not the case, you just are not that good.
@Win’s Dad: That’s a good point, but for that matter, Boston could have, too. You have to wonder why the Red Sox would not have claimed him given their pitching issues.
@Fred: In 66 innings he has 57 hits, 22 walks, and 41 k’s. So averaging and 3-4 k’s a game. That’s not stellar. I’m not saying give up on the guy or he’s bound to fail. And I’m not sure he’s really an innings eater. You’re gonna get about 6 out of him, not much more.
evan, we have seen pitchers like him before, benoit comes to mind, he has incredible stuff but can never figure out how to use it.
okay so we are good enought to go in to new york and play that well but we go up against a team I think we are better than and all of a sudden we arent that good so which is it
Issues with the mound. Umpires currently look at the dirt at the end of mound, which is clumpy.
@obagain: To whom are you referring?
Don’t get me wrong, I’ m with JD on this one. 5.92 ERA and $23 million left on his contract doesn’t do anything for me. I’d rather see another Ranger farm hand up here getting experience.
RF, if you get 6-7 innings each start for your #4 pitcher you should take that.
6 innings per start over 30 starts is 180, now sprinkle in 15 extra innings and you get 195.
Has anyone really been impressed with Tegarden since he took over starting? He had a great game last game in LAA (The Holland start) but other than that I can’t think of a game where you thought, wow, he called a great game. Is this a case of just not regularly catching all the pitchers? Or am I grasping at straws?
7:56: The Rangers have signed INF-OF Ryan Freel to a minor league contract and assigned him to Oklahoma City. Expect Freel to join the club after Sept. 1 as an extra utility man.
@Pat Austin-They have been protecting Borbon against lefites. He’s looked helpless, and, altho I don’t have the #’s, I think he’d had poor splits in the minors. Plus, his OF skills are a work in progress
Hey cool, we got Ryan Freel on a minor league contract. I like Freel, he’s a gutsy player.
@Win’s Dad: Not sure I agree. I’d like to have Kazmir. I fear that Kazmir is bound to haunt the Rangers, first for not picking him in 2002 (and selecting Drew Meyer instead), second for pitching Tampa Bay over them last weekend, and for potentially becoming a regular member of the Angels rotation.
Evan, talking about kaz, he has incredible stuff but just cant figure out how to use it.
Benoit had a year or so that was really good but with his stuff you shake your head at how he is not a top pitcher.
looks like hunter has started to settle in.
@Rangers Fan
1) Point was that his whip was below league avg., so can’t see a lot of MOB.
2) Sadly, agree on TT. Didn’t hit in minors, hasn’t hit in majors. At best, a good glove/no hit backup.
@obagain: Right for a 4-5 starter…but I think some people see him higher. I just don’t see him higher than 4.
@Alan: Any team is capable of beating any other team on any given night. I mean, the Nats took 2/3 in New York. THE NATS! I don’t think they’re up there trying to strike out or don’t care and are playing flat. I don’t think they’re really been swinging at bad pitches. They’ve been good pitches. Obviously this kid is one of their top pitching guys so he’s got quality stuff. Teams of other fans probably look at Hollands numbers and think they should dominate. Then he can have a game where he makes the hitters look overmatched. Doesn’t mean he (or a pitcher doing the same thing to the Rangers) is a spare that we should obviously shell.
Speaking of Joaquin, is he ever going to pitch again? What’s his status?
obagain-we’ll see. hunter does that: bad start, settles in. Had a cheap one in there, too. Bigger concern is the bats
@Fred: I believe the Borbon minor splits were about a 30 pt split. Is that drastic? (not being sarcastic…just asking) And on TT: But has his glove even impressed you that much? He had that great tag vs. Boston but I think Salty is better defensively.
I am not talking about shelling but I do think that if you are a playoff team that you should be able to go anywhere and beat anyone. I am sorry if we lose to this guy tonight that any and all momentum is gone and also what i dont get is why does it seem that the rangers have more excuses made for them well except for the cowboyS first and the mavericks second
Confused? MLB.com reporting that Kazmir deal has fallen through. ESPN, Fox reporting that deal is close. I trust Fox’s Ken Rosenthal more than any national reporter these days. I’ve seen him work. He is the James Brown of baseball reporting. Nobody outworks him.
are we looking at a no hitter today?
yes…. I jinxed him
Well done!
@Rangers Fan: I understand what you mean, and I mostly agree. But come on…you gotta admit that we really seem to struggle against some really average pitchers (at least based on their stats coming in). And after we took 2 of 3 at the Yankees nonetheless!
@obagain: At this moment, Kazmir, who is 25, has a career record of 55-44 with a 3.92 ERA. I would take that from a 25-year-old any day of the week. Dicey part for me has been injuries. Only one season of more than 200 innings and one other with 186. Over the last four seasons (not counting 2004 when he was up for eight starts or this year), he’s averaged 172 innings per year. That’s going to go down this year. Gotta have more innings pitched. That would be my biggest worry. He dealt against the Rangers over the weekend.
@alan: Yes, they CAN go and beat anyone, anywhere. That doesn’t mean they are going to. LA got beat by Oakland. It happens.
RF, next year I see the rotation like this.
Millwood
Feldman
Holland
Feliz
Hunter
We will still have guys like McCarthy, moscoso, nippert all waiting and ready to step in.
I think we will also be talking about perez filling the feliz role by late july next year.
You could also see guys like kiker and beavan added to the BP next year who could fill in for a starter.
well i guess we can always be next years team want a consolation prize
@Rangers Fan- Actually, TT’s glove has not impressed me (his arm has).
He has a disturbing tendency of zoning out (or something). He wiffs on very catchable pitches, altho I haven’t seen many lately. It scares me, for a guy who won’t hit much and the TX nation will never admit isn’t a stud. I watched him in HS. he had a great run end of last year. Now he’s getting the everyday scrutiny, and not looking too good.
I can’t figure out WHY Tampa would trade Kazmir. Ok, he hasn’t done well (based on ERA), but he’s experienced and anyway what’s the option for them? If they were out of it sure, but they are very much in contention. It’s weird.
@Beer Guy: Yeah, they’ve had some bad games at the plate. Basically the month of June. But I’m just saying you can’t look at a pitcher’s numbers (especially a young guy) and say oh he’s average. We also struggle against a lefthander. This guy is a lefty. And as I pointed out, I hate this lineup. There is something to be said about shaking it up every single day. I still have no idea why TT is batting 7th or why he’s playing tonight but…at this point, that’s not meaningful.
beer guy, it is a salery dump.
He will make a ton of money and is not producing.
The angels can hide that kind of player, look at matthews.
Tampa cant, they have to spend wisely.
@Fred: Good points, and being honest here, I sometimes wonder whether TT would have as much hype if he were from, say, Idaho or Maine…
I’m not saying it’s 100% true in this case, but sometimes nationalism can get in the way of objectivity.
@Beer Guy: I’d assume the Rays have decided that Kazmir has already had his best seasons, is replacable in terms of his poor production this season, and that within the confines of their tiny payroll they can’t afford to pay anything but a stud what they owe him for the next couple years. If they can take advantage of a panicking contender and get the contract off the books, they’ll do it. It wasn’t just the Rangers who didn’t claim him, there must be some concern around the league about his future.
obagain: I’m still holding out hope we get Sheets. Millwood alone at the top doesn’t comfort me.
@Fred: Agree. Some strong throws, but I’ve just been underwhelmed. And funny…as I read about the missed balls…he missed a ball.
@oba: From what I understand though Tampa has new owners that had promised to increase the payroll. Maybe it’s a strategic decision…like you said, he’s not producing considering the money he’s being paid. That would free them up to get someone else in the off-season.
Great recovery/adjustment by Hunter so far!
@EVAN: gut feel, between salty, TT, and Max Ram, how many of the 3 are still with the org for the 2010 season?
I say one. and it just might be Max.
The Rangers just aren’t working this Pitcher. He is getting out of too many Low Pitch Count Innings. You really need to get into the mid inning BP Pitchers on .500 baseball teams. Rangers show Low Baseball IQ more often than not.
@beer guy: On the contrary- I might not be a fan of his bc he played at that school. (BOOMER SOONER!) I won’t be blind to good play, but I’m not exactly in his corner.
okay first refrence to pitcher doing good against the rangers if they dont get harden or penny they have this guy wow I am impresssed
@Beer Guy – I think you nailed the TT hype right there. Tuefeli told me that I was wrong when I said TT would get exposed if he played everyday.
jays sox tied at 5.
2nd time thru on this guy, let’s see how they (RHB) do
8:23: So after that first inning in which the Twins jumped on a couple of sliders, RHP Tommy Hunter has pitched three scoreless.
Toronto has completely mailed it in. Can’t count on them to hold any lead no matter how large.
@alan: If you can’t see this kid is pitching a good game, then I’m not sure what you’re watching. They aren’t up there hacking at bad pitches. He’s dealing.
just tuned in. why are we getting one-hit by this guy?
News Flash rangers hit .259 as a team lots of pitchers look good against them.
Ok, this guy has only started 2 games this year, and most pitches was last game (5 IP) vs. KC at 80 pitches. If we let this guy shut us down for 6-7-8 innings or so, shame on us. We need to get to him SOON.
jb this guy is cy young reincarnated tonight and as is usuall some guy who you have never heard of dominates the rangers and that my friends is the story of the rangers past and future
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?n1=duensbr01&t=p&year=2009
Mr. Duensing’s awesome track record.
@Word up: They appear to be down on Ramirez right now. He probably won’t get a Sept. 1 callup, which may instead go to Kevin Richardson. I think Salty remains in the organization and I think the market for Teagarden would be low this winter coming off this offensive performance. Quite frankly, I don’t see the catching situation changing for 2010.
I wonder what people think when they look at Holland’s record so far…
Evan i asked Bacsik about the pitch breaks and he couldn’t asnwer either.
The Ben Sheets talk is reminding me of the Justin Thompson talk…
RF, the casual fan probably wonders why he gets the hype.
The real fans know why.
answer too.
looks like we might be getting a better look at this guy now.
good hustle to beat that out.
@obagain: my point exactly. We didn’t watch him come up through the minors or watch him on a regular basis so we can just call him a spare or not a quality pitcher. Fans of other teams probably look at Holland and think they should be able to do pretty well against him. Some nights you can but sometimes they put it together and embarrass you. I’m not saying this kid is Holland, I frankly don’t know, but just sayin…This guy is throwing his breaking balls for strikes and a good fast with some movement. That’s a good combo.
Bah…the same pitch the second time and Nelly swung at it.
Good job Josh on running that out though!
@Rangers Fan: I’ve personally watched every minor league, high school, and little league game he’s pitched. All I’m going to say is… watch out Nolan Ryan!
I know Tommy’s a big target, but rough night out there for the line drives…
How can Cruz only hit .198 against lefties with a Slg% only .356 against lefties?
OK now we can add tough to the list of things to like about him.
Crap, he is a tough cookie.
Thanks for the sarcasm, jb.
wonder which was faster… the pitch, or the liner back to the mound?
8:50: Tommy Hunter gets hit in the chest by a Justin Morneau liner. Recovers to get the out and it seems to knock a little bit more break into his curve. Threw some very sharp ones to work another 1-2-3 inning. By the way, he now has qualified for a quality start.
Obviosuly the ball being hit with a ball coming in at 90 mph is going to be faster…phsics dictates that I believe.
hunter at 81 pitches thru 6.
Not bad considering that rough 1st.
Great job recovering and eating innings tonight. We’d gotten used to 6-inning starts for a while, but they haven’t come so easily lately.
Batting Stance Guy with the WORST impression of Nolan’s 5000th K EVER
physics*
That was an awesome inning by Hunter
I’d almost take Batting Stance Guy over these SAME THREE COMMERICIALS that play over and over and over and over and over and over on MLB.tv…if I hear about the #!@^#&&@ umpire camp, or the ad for the Wolfenstein video game ONE MORE TIME I’m going to go postal.
RF, on a solid hit you are right but sometimes you see those slow liners to short, there is an exception to every rule.
Good point…but on that ball it appeared to be a line drive type hit ball…
@oba: As Duensing is clearly illustrating with this masterpiece tonight.
Somebody is supposed to tell Hunter to charge those kinds.
RF, I wouldnt stand there and let morneau hit a liner at me, even if it was not real solid.
@Evan: Who is catching tomorrow? Rekindling the Pudge/Feldman magic?
Teagarden with the automatic out.
See y’all later.
@the beer guy: nice
I don’t think Duensing will come out for the eighth.
@Evan, You think they will call up Richardson? Didn’t he lose his spot on the 40 so they’ll need to make a move? Wouldn’t it be easier to just have Max on the bench?
@obagain: I wouldn’t let anyone hit a liner at me!
@Evan: thanks, I’m a little surprised by that; assumed that the Rangers would find the offensive portion of the catching position to be detrimental…. and, really, C and DH are the only open positions on the team heading into ’10. Need to cut down on the whiffs and filling those positions with high-contact fresh blood would seem to make sense
@Iram: There is a spot open on the 40-man at this point…I think. Most likely will be used for McCarthy coming off the 6-day though.
Well, now. Sorry I’m late.
Had to go shopping for the finishing touches on my costume for tomorrow night’s icon costume party.
Rangers won the 6th, so I feel tepidly optimistic about the rest of the game.
What a beating that place (metrodome) must be…
Just getting here. Is the Twins pitcher throwing bb’s or are we just not hitting average stuff?
Good recovery for Hunter…solid outing.
Dear Bats,
Please heat up quickly.
Sincerely,
Ranger Fan
@john: apparently we ran into the twins version of derek holland
Hunter with 7 innings, keeps the team close and lets the BP rest, exactly what the team needs.
Heck of a job, Tommy! Now let’s get to their pen.
@John: Well, I think he looked really good. Got his change ups over for strikes which sets up a good outing. Others, disagree.
@Rangers Fan: This is the Part where you APOLOGIZE for doubting Tommy “Big Game” Hunter… He may not win, but it won’t be because of his pitching, but rather by the PUTRID excuse for an offense
Rangers kryptonite this year seems to be soft tossing rookie left handed pitchers
@Evan: What was your opinion of Duensing tonight? Am I off base?
@RF: I agree that Duensing had good pitches tonight. But I wonder to what extent the batters help pitchers look even better by not getting to certain pitches, striking out, misjudging, etc.
That is about as hard as you can hit a ball and only get a single.
The Metrodome is a really odd baseball venue. I am glad the Twins are moving out of it.
was davis limping after that slide?
Now if we light up their bullpen, I will sing the praises of Duensing!
@Texas_Rocks: I’mn not apologizing. I still think what I said. He’s a 4-5, not what some people make him out to be.
ranger fan i dont think you are off base but you do half to agree that that the good teams find the way and the pretenders find well just like that a way to lose
What a HORRIBLE inning this is!
okay why was elivs running hmm dont get it at all
The guy throws in the mid nineties since when is that soft?
Another ball hit hard for a single.
@Beer Guy: Isn’t that what good pitchers do t hitters? Good pitching always beats good hitting.
This has to be the inning because Mr Coney Island Hot Dog will finish. He doesn’t allow much.
I can see sending Elvis there. Stay out of the DP, try to manufacture at least 1 run. He steals that most times.
@alan: you don’t win every single game. it won’t happen. You don’t even win all the games you are supposed to win. What do you think fans in LA and Boston say tonight if they lose? Are they pretenders too?
If they put in CJ I’m going to scream. Quit overusing him.
Oops, Rookie Mistake. They will WOW you and make you tear your hair out….all in one inning.
yes ranger fan and the good teams find a way to get around it and the teams with excuses stay home right?
could have been an important run there…
Don’t see us getting to Joe “Superman” Nathan. Here’s hoping Boston and LA lose. Go Jays and A’s!
Yooo, Pedro, Stick it to’m
interesting that wash still uses the kid with a 3-1 score.
wow, I’ve never understood Ron Washington… He REALLY makes Strop’s FIRST Batter be Joe Mauer, the BEST hitter in baseball… I know he’s made some weird things before, but damm
If Holland pitched like the twins pitcher did tonight EVERYONE of yall would be saying how great he is.
ranger fan i dont expect them to win every game all I am saying for the last time is the good teams no matter find a way to get it done and the teams that cant dont you think the yankeees or the angels have that same mentality or do they say hey no mattter who it is we can beat that guy
impressive.
Welcome Pedro. Is it possible to have yet another rookie contributor?
Jason Jennings coul’ve have done that…LOL
alright, lets see if he can outdo feliz in his major league debut.. set the bar low
It’s Strop time!
OK, very impressive.
@dc: yup, thats the “homer” aspect of all hometown fans
@alan: This is a losing argument. You are going to be a disappointed baseball fan if you expect your team to win every night the matchup looks favorable. It’s baseball…the predictable never happens.
The point is this sort of thing happens way too often. It isn’t just Duensing. It’s about 12 or more pitchers this year who have been average at best but miraculously “find themselves” when they play us. Then afterwards, they revert to average. Coincidence? I really don’t know, but it’s frustrating.
Time to STROP the Twins and Start our own rally
okay I give that is not my argument at all but whatever you say It is waht it is i guess
@dc: Correct. Which is why I say, impressive outing from Duensing. And I’ll hope for an outing like that from Holland Monday.
@the beer guy: i agree. quite a few pitchers have pitched their season high strikeout games against us
thank you beer guy that is my whole point
Strop is a converted SS?
@texas_rocks: is your name norm?
and when we are sitting at home with the rangers not in the playoffs then we will look back at this game and many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more that will are downfall end of story
@alan: then what is your argument?
beer guy, imagine how many bruises he gave first basemen.
One more thing (then I’ll stop and just concede the point hehe): It’s not so much about beating these pitchers or winning the game per se, but we get SHUT DOWN by them. Double digit strike outs in some, 2-hit, shut out. Maybe if I saw the numbers for the entire season it would be only a few instances, but it doesn’t feel like that.
this season’s ranger theme: playing up to the competition, and likewise, playing down to the competition
whatever they are paying our scouts (major league) they need to give them a raise. O’Day, Grilli, Strop – thats some serious BP arms for almost nothing.
Is it really that hard for Rangers Hitters to TAKE a pitch????
beavan has a 3 hit shutout going thru 6.
A. Mauer and Morneau k back to back. B. Mauer strikes out multiple times. C. Welcome to the Rangers Pedro. How often do these happen???
Ok Hank…big AB here.
Could we keep this going and pull out a win for the rookie?
Pudge just showed you how we should have approached Duensing tonight. Very few of our hitters hit the ball to the opposite field.
ranger fan never mind it doesnt matter you win okay
David Murphy is one of those guys I love watching play because it’s obvious he doesn’t have the best tools in the box, but man does he play the game hard and the right way… I hope he stays with the Rangers for a long time
Wow! So close! Let’s go Hank
On Gameday…was Murphy’s close to going out?
yes mike…a foot away.
a very hot place just froze over. Blalock walks.
showing hank some respect, or thinking hank would strike himself out?
Wow, I love the fact that Blalock walked, but I hate the fact that this brings up CD… I like the kid so I don’t want to see him fail… Hope he pulls through…
Wow….let’s go, Chris!
CD the hero???????
That was not a stike, I don’t believe.
Gameday has the last pitch outside!
Not even close to a strike.
@Mike…so does ESPN!
wow… Pathetic… If that UMP isn’t disciplined then I’ll be pissed even more
okay blame the ump time
thats BS.
Horrible call….he shows plate discipline and gets punished.
That was a great AB for Davis. Didn’t swing at balls, fouled off to stay alive. Too bad the ump blew it.
like I said good teams find a way and well pretenders well they end the way it just ended
Unbelievable. An absolute CRAP call. Get a !^%#ing pair of glasses ump. Awful.
alan i’m sure thats what the yankees fans said too when the rangers beat them.
Sounds like alan needs a hug.
Wow, Evan declared it a ball on TV so we’re aren’t just homers.
You just can’t take that pitch. Glad for the mini rally but CD you can’t take that pitch.
That’s a AAA ump that was called up for relief duty…I hope he enjoys his short stay.
@DC: are the yankees pretenders too?
That wasn’t Davis’ fault. That was a clear ball, no sane person would call that a strike. That ump needs to be forcibly retired. The 5th pitch that Davis fouled off was probably one of those “too close to take” pitches, but the 7th pitch was further outside than that. I hate that.
Keep making calls like that ump, and MLB will put in instant replay for balls & strikes!
What do you mean you can take that pitch. It was a ball first of all and second if CD swings at it he either misses it or hits a weak grounder to 3rd.
@Tom: If he swings and misses at that ball and the tracker shows it outside, people go bananas about not swinging at balls. Can’t win for losing…
The pitch tracker clearly showed that ball WAY off the plate.
tom b, how can he swing at a pitch 3 inches outside?
He cant reach it and would K, you cant swing at an obvious ball 4.
Tom B he sure couldn’t hit it either that far out.
RF must be.
@Tom B- What do you mean? The pitch wasn’t any where close to the plate.
you know how hard it is for a major leaguer to make contact wit that pitch… the bats just aren’t long enough… he barely fouled the previous one off
That was so far outside he almost certainly would have flailed at it and not made contact. He did the right thing by taking it, the ump is just a mental midget.
@DC: Well dang, better call off October because every contender has lost games they “should” have won.
@alan–Back to Hunter, I’d say he pitched pretty well. Quality start and a lot of balls–in fact balls hit off him. He’s a tough kid. Not everybody understands toughness. i like him. Reminds me of me.
There is no way that ball caught the plate. It was a slider and if you look at where Mauer caught it, it still wasn’t behind the corner of the plate so how could it have crossed the plate. Just piss poor umpiring. I would like to know why MLB decided to put a AAA ump behind the plate when there are 3 other umps on the field who could do it during such an important game for both teams.
Last cal=all star closer vs. rook. Who gets the marginal call?
Unheralded rookie shuts them down, lost about 3 extra bases to perfect throws and bad hops in the 8th and then the ump just throws in the towel on the last pitch. Wow, that’s a dispiriting game! Just gotta hope the Jays and A’s come through for us and go get ‘em tomorrow.
@Fred- nice one. straight from Tombstone.
Davis made the right decision and got screwed for it.
any word on games in progress?
@Fred: I wouldn’t even call that marginal. Granted it wasn’t in the dirt or over his head or something, but it wasn’t visibly close, and I think I’m being objective.
Tor-Bos still in rain delay 5-5 T8th
Oak 5-1 over LA T3rd
Does MLB even monitor or take any action on missed calls? I’ve never heard of it. Personally, I think umpires do the worst job of officiating in the major sports, well, maybe the NBA is worse. But hockey is a much faster game and they seem to do a real good job.
Fred if it’s close the all star but the 3 or more inches wasn’t close.
Ther’s no joy in Mudville…
I gotta say one of the big potential take a ways from tonight was this tease from Strop. Dude brought it and didn’t look intimidated. Imagine if he could give you some Feliz type BP and you could move Feliz to the rotation!
I want to see me some more Strop-on-a-rope.
@RF: Me either. Once in a while you hear an ump personally admitting he blew a call, but never any official sanction. But this guy probably hurt his short-term promotion chances I guess.
I read that Strop can be inconsistent so the thing to hope is that his next outing is just as good!
@Evan: An up for the game…Chris Davis AB in the 9th. Showed everything we wanted to see after the AAA trip.
@Rangers fan: yes nba officiating is indeed the worst
Just great, Kazmir is an Angel.
Bad bad strike call. Terrible. I hate getting hosed.
if strop can duplicate that we can pitch them every other game and really lock down the 7th inning.
The Twins have our number this year. Every time we play these guys … very frustrating win or lose. The Andrus CS did hurt because you want him out there being aggressive especially since we had DP-itis in NY. I thought Hunter pitched well. And…
…. Hank walked. The drought is over!
Love ya’ll. Tommorow!
Horrible call at the end, but we have to wake up before the 8th. Night all….enjoyed everyone’s comments.
Strop may be good or an inning or two, but watch out. I saw him pitch early in the season and got excited, but then he got hit pretty hard in AAA and was sent down to Frisco where he was better. I’m not holding my breath on Strop-on-a-rope.
Mike Estabrook..HMP…come on down to Texas, Mike..we need a good little gutless POS who can be intimidated by a home town crowd..we’ll be checking our programs
@Buck- was that out of the pen or as a starter, not familiar with how he has been used.
Strop has been used in relief exclusively.
Love this strope kid…see his interview?
Mike he pitched relief all year. He was converted from a ss only had a couple years pitching.
Strop*
smoak was 2-4 with a 2 run HR tonight.
Boston has men on 2nd/3rd and 1 out in the 8th.
Boston 6-5…
You know, it is easier to read 300 comments than 800. Sure Evan would like the latter, but if you fell behind it is much easier to catch up.
Stupid Toronto.
@Rangers Fan, you have become my hero.
Boomer Sooner, baby!
@Auditor: Heck yes! BOOMER!
Bases loaded 1 out in 9th for Tor
Barajas sticking it to us again.
Lost the game we got back yesterday….can’t catch a break.
Freaking Jays. Blow a good lead.
I agree with Stuart, cannot catch a break.
When the Rangers get home from the current road trip they need to tear it up.
@RF, just in case you are pulling a Sims: Sooner!
@Auditor: Oh how awkward is that at Heisman events and some such….
@all: Even Baseball Tonight sided with the Rangers on the strike call..that never happens.
