ARLINGTON - While I’m inputting this file, Evan will be at my side and should chime in throughout the evening.
You’ve probably seen Evan’s report earlier that Jarrod Saltalamacchia won’t be ready to rejoin the club on Tuesday and now calls the chance of surgery to correct his bout with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome 50-50.
5:05: Here is your home run pool entry form. The Saltalamacchia story has been updated.
5:40: Ron Washington told reporters today he is uncertain if he will start DH-OF Julio Borbon in either game of Tuesday’s doubleheader with Toronto since the Blue Jays are starting a pair of left-handers. Whatever the Rangers have tried against lefties for the last month has not worked. Though Texas is 26-21 in games in which the opposition has started a lefty this season, the Rangers are 4-7 since August 1. In those 11 games, left-handed starters have qualified for quality starts eight times and have a composite 4.18 ERA.
The Rangers have been heavily left-handed all season, but early in the year, DH Andruw Jones offered a right-handed hitting power threat. Since Jones has tailed off, particularly against lefties, so have the Rangers. Jones is currently on the DL with a hamstring strain and eligible to return on September 8.
Before he was called up, Borbond did an adequate job against left-handed pitching. He had .276 batting and .357 OBP against lefties in 172 at-bats. He was not, however, much of a threat to drive the ball. Only five of his 42 hits against lefties were for extra bases. Borbon is 1-for-3 against lefties since his callup, but he has not started any games against them.
7:14 Derek Holland, coming off a struggle last week at Yankee Stadium, has not lost consecutive starts since mid-June (at Boston, home against the Dodgers).
7:44: Lot of talk about the Rangers playing to the level of their opposition and lately that’s been the case. Since the All-Star break the Rangers are 15-7 against teams that currently have winning records and are 9-11 against teams that began Monday at .500 or below. The reason? Don’t ask me. Really not much in the way of a logical explanation.
8:18: That single by Michael Young extends his home hitting streak to 23 games, tying Pudge Rodrguez’s club record from 1995. Also gives him an 18-game overall streak, longest current streak in the majors.
8:27: That’s two two-HR games for Rod Barajas against the Rangers this season.
8:41: May I have your attention: Evan will now take your questions (which I thought he already was doing).
10:07: Lest you worried, Evan will provide the Post-Game Show.
10:11: The last time that the Rangers scored in double figures and didn’t win was NOT the infamous 19-17 doozy at Boston last August. In September, they lost at home to the Angels 15-13.
10:29: Most runs allowed by the Rangers since their first road game of the season, that 15-2 loss at Detroit that began six losses in six games there this season.
Why will they not give Chad Tracey a shot?
It couldn’t hurt to start Borbon in one of the games, I would say against Tallet.
I would go with Byrd, Hamilton, and Cruz in the OF in game one. With maybe Murphy or Pudge at DH.
In the second game, Borbon, Byrd, Cruz, with Hamilton at DH.
You can’t sit Hamilton completely. Murphy and Borbon both should play one of the games.
just in case if scooper isn’t here: Hey Evan, how about another Ranger win!
My opinion on the two biggest needs (and frankly, the ONLY real needs) for 2010?
1. Righthanded power bat (corner OF/DH);
2. Lefty in pen (to pair with CJ);
Suspect we fill #2 with Kiker (by say, May). #1? Marlon Byrd? Is that enough?
@Jack: Agreed on those needs. Byrd not enough…we need someone with real pop besides Cruz from the right side. But I suspect “chemistry” will carry the day and Byrd will stay, and we’ll continue to struggle to score runs. Well, at least the team is happy!
No TV for me tonight (Jays blackout on MLB.tv, and as I am not a big TV person, can’t watch on regular cable…radio for me tonight!)
@JackDaddy: I think that is a negative on Byrd. I like him but he’s mostly gap power, which is good, but not enough to be considered a power bat.
I don’t see Byrd resigning here. Isn’t he a Boras client? I think he will do like GMJ any way. Big contract year, then fizzle off to his normal career numbers or lower. Maybe he can go to the Angels too.
@Evan: What’s the latest on the Ben Sheets situation? Seems like it’s been months since his name has been brought up anywhere. Any chances he might rehab and sign here next season?
EVAN: FSN indicates Kevin Richardson will join the team tomorrow. True? If so, why Richardson over Max Ramirez. Doesn’t Richardson’s addition require making a roster spot available on the 40-man, whereas Ramirez doesn’t?
Good evening everybody. Let’s go Rangers!
Evan is Smoak hurt he’s been out of the lineup 2 days in a row now?
Perez pitching for frisco tonight.
This is not good…
@Jack-Agree with you on both. Don’t think the answer to either is currently in the organization. Does Moreland bat L or R?
Ugly start. Murph didn’t help.
Looks like holland is not on early.
Tegarden is on thin ice in my opinion, or should be. I don’t think he’s played well behind the plate and certainly not at the plate. Thoughts on that?
RF, teagarden his had a bad season.
If he starts the year the same way next year I dont see him staying with the big club.
Mmmmkay then.
So, how many runs does he give up before wash pulls him?
@ALL: Somebody, if you know where the Jack_Daddy family lives, please get there and hide the sharp objects. Please!
Ewww, wonder what’s happening on Monday Night Football
Gonna need the offense to step up on this one.
@Wins Dad-Richarson is a better catcher (primary need is D). Max has battled injuries all year and not hit well.
Sure wish he had that pitch to Barajas back. Inning wouldn’t have been too bad
@Win’s Dad: The Rangers think Richardson is more deserving of the callup since Ramirez has been hurt and ineffective for much of the season. If the Rangers put Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the 60-day DL on Tuesday, they should be able to accommodate both Richardson and Brandon McCarthy. Any other callups that come from the group not currently on the 40-man roster will require making a more delicate move.
Now would be a good time for a breakout game for the offense…
Heres a scary thought Andruw Jones is playing first base in frisco tonight.
man this is such an important game…lose the next few games and this season is over. c’mon rangers.
Does anyone else fear a quick 1-2-3 inning?
@DC: Well aren’t they in for a treat tonight….
Let’s not give up on the team tonight yet…we have 9 innings.
Can we score 6 runs? We only scored 8 in three game at Minnesota! (and only 12 in the last 5 games) That’s not to mention holding them scoreless the rest of the way…
@RF-Surprisingly, TT has been somewhat erratic on D, too (too often not catching catchable balls). Seemed to go in streaks. Hope he’s over it, now.
RF what scares me though is Wash playing him at 1st when he gets back.
Some more of that WTP
Sorry, scratch that about the last 5 games, I miscounted. But 8 in the last 3 games is correct.
We can score 6 runs if we quit hitting balls right at people
Looks like we may make this pitcher look like an allstar.
Looks like the team is down, doesnt that caome back to wash?
He gets credit for the team “playing hard” shouldnt he get the blame when they dont?
Jack Daddy – I agree w/u in a lot of ways. I would the Rangers to do the following for 2010:
1) Clean-up Hitter (Adam Dunn??)
2) LH bullpen guy
3) Utility guy (Vizquel)
3) Re-sign Byrd & Benoit. I think he adds a power RH arm in the bullpen. This year it shows that having depth, especially in the pitching staff is really important. If they still control Grilli that gives you about 18-20 potential pitchers in ML & AAA that is available & what you need.
wow nedermeyer talking drug and alcohol counseling……..as a belushi fan i find that reassuring…….
@stemyn-If you’re going to play Borbon, I’d think it would be against the RHP (last game). Not sure if they’re ready to see him in OF, but Cruz and usually sure handed Murph haven’t looked too good the last couple of days either
@DC-Very scary (Jones `B
The whole team looks like thay are not here.
Make that “Jones 1B. Can’t type and watch
What a depressing crowed they have their tonight…why do fans not come to games?
You know what, if you are going to be a playoff team you are going to have to win games like this every once in a while.
What an error filled line that was…depressing crowed they have there**
@Rangers Fan: School back in session, HS football practice going on, Monday night, not very exciting opponent in town. Bad combo.
The offense needs to get at least a run here or it would take a miricle.
But so far it looks like everyone’s trying to hit the 5-Run Homer.
I luv the suggestion to let byrd go to the angels…….perfect fit for both……..
wlll we even get a draft pick for byrd?
@DC – Smoak is with Team USA right now.
I think the angels would be hesitant to sign another CF from us to a huge contract.
i feel a real shortage in the power force for a while……..i’d be ok with that if we could just teach our minor leaguers to bunt…..
So something needs to happen to get fired up…an emotional Ron Washington? Let’s not count on that. A brawl? Doubtful…any ideas?
Wait, allow me: “Boy, Cecil is really dealing tonight. He’s really got great stuff. He’s making all the pitches. He’s really tough.”
Isn’t it amazing how many great pitchers there are in the AL??
Turn out the lights ther parties over man I sure have missed these Rnagers all year long now this is the team I know we have all come ot know and love
lets see how many 123 inning we can have here is it just me or does the team look as flat as a pancake and another its pretty sad the team cant get more people out to support them but I think most people know deep down that the ending is coming and fast or it just could be apathy towards the whole thing in general either way its not suprising and yet I alomost wish it wasnt.
If they thought he would help their team OB, they wouldn’t even blink an eye to overpay him.
Props to tt on that one, that was a tough catch.
Oh yea forgot.
Aside from six Rangers up and six Rangers down, Jays 23-year-old rookie lefty Brett Cecil has thrown only 23 pitches. No more than five to any batter.
Do we have an OF that can play?
Holland and Murph are both having rough nights
I’m not really sure what Murphy could have done with that ball…
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Texas Rangers September Slump.
No October for us.
when they extend rudy’s contract they should have his entire off-season focused on minor league bunting……c’mon rudy take one for the team……
The Angels-Mariners game is being shown (live) here in Melbourne in an hour or so. And to quote from the on-line TV guide, “The Los Angeles Angels have sewn up top spot in the American League West…..The Mariners have a chance of claiming a wild card…” So I guess we all might as well go into hibernation now and wait for spring training…..
@beer guy don’t you see that tag has a lifetime membership in the kooaide franchise……geez, didn’t he sign the first kool-aid contract?
Evan, I go back to wash again.
How can he not have his team prepared to play bad teams?
Looks to me like derek is throwing and not pitching so far.
Love Holland. hate seeing him struggle
on the other hand farve is playing pretty well tonight and peterson had a long td run to start the game for the vikings on offense 7-0 why not this is about as intresting as the game know
Well, Holland is a young pitcher. We know young pitchers are going to struggle, but still hard to watch.
@JustSaying: lol, did he really say that? I don’t have the TV feed tonight, was just guessing.
Hmm, yeah, lose this and 4 out of the WC with no games left vs. Boston. LA wins and we’re 6 out of the West. That is VERY VERY close to the edge of being done, for all intents and purposes.
hey we made a play in the outfield
@alan: If this game is so uninteresting to you why are you watching and/or posting here? Personally, I’d be happy if Favre never through another ball in the NFL. He’s a joke. “All Day” on the other hand…
Threw*
The ironic thing, of course, is that LA actually DID come down to earth lately, as we all figured they must. But we didn’t/aren’t taking advantage of that, which is what I was afraid of.
2nd time thru, the Toronto kid might have some problems. Of course, he’s had control problems lately–is it improved, or are we helping him?
ranger fan relax i am trying to keep myself from going crazy okay so if you dont mind go back to yur little homer box and get over urself I am not hurting anybody by what I write here
3B Jerry Hairston, Jr. just booted a grounder to break up Andy Pettitte’s perfect game bid. Two outs in the seventh.
@Fred: I’ll repeat the Company Line: “Boy, Cecil is really dealing tonight. He’s really got great stuff. He’s making all the pitches. He’s really tough.”
Our offense struggle? Perish the thought!
Wish Elvis did that last nite
Yeah seems like his offspeed stuff looks alot like dereks tonight.
First guy not to use a HR swing and he gets a hit, will anyone else take notice?
Oh, It’s 6-0 now, perfect!
@obagain: I don’t think it is lack of preparation. I think, particularly in August, this team has become very week against left-handed pitching. Entering the third inning, the Rangers were hitting .232 for the the month against left-handed pitchers. Just unacceptable.
Pettitte’s no hitter is gone now. Markakis singled on 0-2 count.
Yes, a little bummed. Not really angry – more kind of stunned. Derek doesn’t have it all tonight. Fastball doesn’t have the extra oomph and no command of breaking ball whatsoever (looks to be trying to throw curve more than slider tonight – though missed the 3rd giving boys a bath).
I like the way Holland (and Hunter for that matter) continue to battle when they don’t have their good stuff. Great example was last Monday when Hunter battled through it and Liriano stopped competing.
@Fred – Mooreland is a lefty. Just makes our “inbalance” that much pronounced that our top hitting OF prospect is a lefty.
@Fred A – I’ve thought about Dunn a lot. On the one hand, he strikes out A TON, which is the LAST thing this lineup needs. On the other hand, he walks A TON, which is the main thing this lineup needs. Tie breaker – I think he would be very cheap in this baseball economy and it seems many in the league don’t like the guy at all. However, I don’t think he’s a free agent, is he?
@alan: Well is it really that fun to look for everything negative going on in a game?
@obagain-I can’t put it on Wash. This isn’t a pep high school pep rally.
Apparently the perfecto was lost on an error…how infuriating that must be.
Evan, how did the team become a bad hitting team against lefties in aug?
My theory on our ability to hit the “good” pitchers and not the “average” pitchers?
We are agressive. The pitcers that pound the zone (ie., strike throwing “good” pitchers) are vulnerable to that. The pitchers that live out of the zone and require the hitter to chase stuff out of zone do well versus us. Can you image what Jason Jennings would do to us?
Jason Bay Boston made this point earlier after they faced Halladay and got snuffed out. He said their patient approach at the plate didn’t work on a guy like Hallady, that they looked up and constantly were down in count 0-2. Look whats happend in their two starts against Doc since then.
Makes sense. Or it doesn’t.
@RF, you are right, let’s think positive. One touchdown and we’re right back in this game.
I really don’t know what can be done to this lineup to make it produce.
Y’all mention that Byrd isn’t a power guy, and I agree, but hes a great clubhouse guy and has been above average this year.
I just don’t know who you get rid of and then replace them with, but this lineup is just abysmal.
Well, sometimes venting frustration can be good, but I guess too much of it is annoying to others. Plus, sometimes I think if I can’t say anything positive, I shouldn’t say anything at all.
So on that note, I’m calling it an early night. Maybe tomorrow I’ll be more optimistic.
You know what, I’m all for pitchers battling and working harder/longer, but get this kid outta here before something really bad happens.
actually yes it is if I am being honest okay with my opinion okay and what I think about the situation at hand I dont sit around a be
a homer okay If i was I would get paid for it like Josh and Tom and so just chill enjoy the game and as a lifelong Ranger fan I knew the collapse was coming okay not being negative just honest see the difference and I am not trying to offend you so realx and enojy the game and hope you have a good night
Where has this curveball been?
@Ryan’s Dad: Oh how I hate living in a football town…
@obagain – jones went into toilet and Borbon was promoted. Plus, and I don’t have the stats in front of me, I think Salty is a better hitter vs. righties than TT is.
fred, then you also cant give him credit for the team playing hard.
The player are a strange group and you try not to upset things as a manager when they are playing good.
When you confuse them they tend to play like they are tonight.
You look at things like calling up a player and he goes nuts and is hitting 485, so you sit him because he might have trouble against a lefty, players are confused and borbon has not been the same since.
Young getting pulled in the 7th inning when the team is 7 runs down but the bases loaded, young went on a small slump after that.
I could go down the list but you get the idea.
@RF, I’m just trying to lighten things up. I assure you that I would rather sit down and watch a random baseball game than football. You are in good company.
@Evan-They are reverting to the multi-year mean on LHP
not concerned about Holland having a rough night. but fb seems to be missing about 4 mph. That is concerning.
when was the last time we lost one that WASN’T a nailbiter? Somewhat relieved. Feel bad for Holland’s era – gonna make the back of the baseball card look ugly.
Time to catch up on the DVR – that ball was hammered.
Question for baseball geeks, how many division leaders currently adjust the top half of their batting based on the pitcher they are facing?
EVAN: Since we have so little to talk about in tonight’s game, do you have any update on the potential sale of the team? I keep reading comments tonight on what the Rangers should do to re-configure the roster for next year. It seems to me that the ownership situation will dictate much of what happens this winter.
Why is Holland still in there? I realize its a lost game, but now you’re getting into ****ing with his confidence territory.
Come on wash, it is only 10 runs, surely he could give up 4-5 more before being ready for the showers.
Words fail me.
I will never understand Ron Washington. Why leave the kid in that long when it’s that apparent he doesn’t have it. Why? Crush the kid’s confidence that much? Real crappy of him.
Not enuf reliable RH hitters. AJ did it early, but our record against LHP went back to historical lows as he reverted to his recent mean
Somewhere… in ontario… is a sports blog… where commentors are current saying “glad Roy vetoed that trade, that DH looks horrible”.
@Evan Grant I’m with Win’s Dad, what can you tell us about the potential sale of the team? I think a parade needs to be held the day Tom Hick’s gives up control of the team.
This was a case of a kid being a kid. Nuthin tonight
@RF, it’s looking like we’re gonna need a field goal too now.
last post of night -
imo, this was the first Holland where he just looked horrible. In the other losses, they mostly were marred by 1 or 2 mistakes. Even when that wasn’t the case against SD, he struck out 7. He looked absolutely awful tonight. Poor kid.
Thanks goodness the rosters expand tomorrow.
This might have bought Thomas Diamond a promotion – don’t you need to pull up every relief arm on the 40 man (which is every pitcher but Poveda)?
@Win’s Dad: No update on sale of team. Tom Hicks is at the game tonight, but there is nothing new. This process will be lengthy and will involve several partners. Don’t look for anything in the way of significant movement to occur before the fall.
@Gunter: Cacing Hill and Lind was not about winning the game, but about testing Holland. The Rangers wanted to see Holland respond to adversity. It is safe, however, to say that he didn’t respond well.
@RF-Assume he’s trying to save the pen. Altho it should expand tomorrow, so not sure that’s a good reason. Hope Holland’s psych isn’t damaged.
gunter, I suspect the sale wont go thru until close to next season or just after the season starts which means we wont have any money to spend.
@Ryan’s Dad: And that’s just to tie…
We’ve got them right where we want them.
@Fred: My point exactly…is screwing with his head worth saving them pen when rosters expand tomorrow?
Well, he extended his hitting streak…
@Fred, that’s precisely what I meant when I said “before something really bad happens” 8:02 post.
@Jack-G’night, Mate. As to Diamond, after a decent year, he looks like he’s fading a bit, lately.
Time for an 11 run inning. How bout it?
Evan, is the last day of aug in a pennant race the time to be testing a rookie pitcher to see how he responds to not haveing any pitch he could control?
What has DH home era blown up too?
Hopefully we just witnessed the worst game Derek Holland will ever pitch in the major leagues. As for the offense, they have regressed to their old pattern of helping opposing pitchers break through in their low self esteem issues. A good manager would juggle his rotation right now to have his struggling starters face our lineup. Too bad for Holland he wasn’t pitching to our guys tonight, things might have been different.
I think texas wants diamond to pitch winter ball.
Would they call him up and still send him to winter ball?
I think Wash butchered this one too. I suspect he was hoping he would turn it around and be able to walk away from tonight feeling good, and it never happened. But in a pennant race with a roster expansion coming tomorrow, you had to get him out of there. I know he wanted Mathis available for one of the games tomorrow, but still.
@gunter – hicks by no means has distinguished himself as owner here. But know this:
1. he came out of his pocket most every year to fund budget shortfalls (and I can’t assure that is the truth). in other words, revenue fell short of covering payroll EVERY year he owned team, save for maybe 99.
2. he has shown tremendous patience the last 3 years to commit to this new plan, including spending huge sums in Latin America for guys like Martin Perez. When this team wins a WS in either 10 or 11, people need to remember his contributions in righting this ship.
3. I am not enough of a baseball fundamentals expert to know what’s going on with Josh Hamilton. But if he hadn’t been the 1st pick of the draft and I hadn’t seen last year, you wouldn’t be able to convince he that he was anything better than a mediocre player. Offense and Defense. If he gives us the 2008 performance, we are 2 games up instead of 5 games back.
8:18: That single by Michael Young extends his home hitting streak to 23 games, tying Pudge Rodrguez’s club record from 1995. Also gives him an 18-game overall streak, longest current streak in the majors.
sorry – meant I “CAN” assure you that’s true
@RF/Ryans Dad-I hear ya both and agree. I love the kid and his potential. This was really, really ugly. I understand the point of trying to get him to perform thru adversity, but it backfired. From the start he didn’t have command of either FB or breaking ball.
Byrd and Hanilton continue to struggle…
@Evan: Do you think it affects Kinsler moving from 1st to 5th/6th depending on the pitcher?
@Jack Daddy Goodnight sir. Don’t blame you.
@Evan Grant if it were you though, and your guy obviously just didn’t have his stuff-and you were on atleast the fringe of a pennant race-would you leave him out there to “deal with adversity?” He’s a rookie after all, and as has been detailed, rosters expand tomorrow….you can take hit on your bullpen. I like Wash, I really do, but it’s an odd decision to me.
Of course, the way the Rangers typically handle a rook, it doesn’t matter whether Holland allowed 10 or 1. But we always rally in the 9th. Hard team to love, but I do.
This is so painful.
I have been pleasantly surprised by what this team has done up to now this year. We were never thought by the “experts” to be as good as we are. It is a bit of a downer tonight, but I don’t give up easy. There are over 30 games left. A lot can happen. In either the wild card or division race. But then again, I am a fan. I am not always looking for something bad to happen as some people seem to be. For those I say, go find the Cowboys. And don’t come jumping on the bandwagon if something happens. Just shut up and stay away.
WTF, another 4-5 runs and this game might get out of control.
When the rosters expand can we bring up the AAA batting coach as well?
8:27: That’s two two-HR games for Rod Barajas against the Rangers this season.
Oh well, I pretty much gave up on the Rangers after the Redmon at bat yesterday. Just horrible managing.
Looks like a soon to be collaspe. Everyone will want to know what “pieces” we need for next year. A hitter? A batter?
I say it starts with Wash. If he is around we have no chance. But the players will like him. HRs ensure you a bigger paycheck than bunts.
Sigh.
It’s hard to see the season slip away like this. Toronto came in to this series struggling mightily. We have gone back to our old ways of making other teams healthy. It’s really discouraging. Maybe the boys can light this guy up later, but it looks like the horse has already left the barn.
I know I said 5 posts ago that I was going to catch up on my dvr backlog and stop watching, but have been enjoying the commentary and I wanted to officially welcome “stemyn” — glad to have you here. Love your optimism and feel the same way about bandwagon jumpers.
NOW, I’m done.
You cannot give up on the team now. They’re going to keep playing hard and they’re talented. They’re not going to fall apart. They may not make the playoffs…but they aren’t going to fall apart.
@ beer guy….was laughing when i read your tag comments….i mean you could turn on “any” game and that would be true……..
i am just curious how holland might be used differently if he was on the red sox or dodgers?
hey football is on………
@Jack Daddy
Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not calling Hicks the male version of the owner from ‘Major League’ here. But in Dallas, there are 3 (relevant) owners. Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban, and Tom Hicks. Two owners who will take a loss to give their team a competitive edge and commit themselves again and again to building the best team possible, and then Tom Hicks-who cites budget concerns and goads the fans for not coming out enough so he can field a more competitive team.
He did sink a lot of money in early on, but that’s because he knew if they’d win something, there would be butts in the seats-and thats still true. It’s just that he’s discovered that you can win something and be cheap, or so the theory goes, and so he’s taken that route.
I like the route, I like the youth and I like Wash and I like JD (i’ve forgiven him for the bad trades), but it’s maddening to be this close and know that if he is still the owner next season, they won’t increase payroll, despite being in a top 5 media market and in the same division as SEA and LAA whom have markedly higher payrolls.
I’d give my first born to have Mark Cuban owning this team as passionately as he does the Mavs. And I suspect Stars owners, staring at a team about to take the ice while under the salary cap, feel the same way.
This is f-ing Dallas. Not Milwaukee, Cleveland, or Portland. There’s money, so spend it!
1-800-DONT-DOIT If you’re feeling depressed and all alone. Pick up the phone. Evan will be there to guide you through.
Is anyone else simply laughing at this point?
I speaking for myself I feel for is Michael Young I want us to win for him so bad and I know we have next year but it’s kind of like dirk for the mavericks some players in my view I want them to win it so bad it hurts to see the years just slipping away for people like Young and I hope that someday he gets the chance to win even if it gosh forbid it didnt end up being here I can always hope that it happens for him
@Gunter, obagain: I was just trying to identify what could possibly be gained by leaving him in there. The “intestinal fortitude” angle was all I could come up with.
@Rangers Fan: I don’t think it impacts Kinsler sliding around the lineup. That said, I think Julio Borbon needs to be leading off every day at this point. Ride ‘em while he’s hot.
Well atleast we’re not being no-hit, right? Silver lining and all that.
OK, the heck with it. Let’s just open it up to questions. Fire away. Be more interesting than replaying a game from 2007.
@rangers fan,
At least 5 days till college football.
I asked this before Evan, but at what point do you get concerned with Hamilton’s lack of power?
It’s nice he’s gotten his average up, but he’s a guy you need to be a power threat, not a singles hitter.
Ryans Dad @ August 31st, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Question for baseball geeks, how many division leaders currently adjust the top half of their batting based on the pitcher they are facing?
8:41: May I have your attention: Evan will now take your questions (which I thought he already was doing).
I don’t fault Hicks for wanting to make money. This team has a budget of around $70 million, which is enough to be competitive if you spend it right. I want the guy to make money. I think Hicks is a pretty competitive guy who wants to win and he has shown that. Times are tougher now, though, and just like everyone else, he has to show some constraint. I assume he is in a highly leveraged position, and Cuban and Jerry Jones aren’t, and I think that makes a big difference in how you manage the finances of a team.
Anyone else here ride mountain bikes?
@auditor-I’m just sayin, Wash isn’t totally at fault. If the guys on the field–Cruz, Blalock., Wilson, for example, do their job, we’re out of it. Or if Borbon, Elvs or MY, the man I wanted, had delivered to come up
Good question OB, but it opens the floor to another question. Is it really a mountain bike if there are no mountains around?
nice slide by davis.
When was the last time the Rangers were on the good side of one of these games where they were spotted an 11 run lead early in the game?
Ryans dad, if you have been to waco or northshore you might as well be in the mountains, you can really hurt yourself there.
that is going to leave a mark.
@Doug Fu: Is now too early? I’d be more concerned with the power outage if Hamilton wasn’t hitting the ball, but he hasn’t homered since August 7 and has just two since returning from the DL in early July.
@Evan: Regarding CJ Wilson…as we all know I’m quite the CJ fan others hate the guy. Some people have problems with his “attitude” or his “flippancy”. I personally think his ability to shrug things off is a must with a closer/late inning pitcher. So getting to the point…what does the team feel like? I know Michael Young had words with him after the comments about teamates last year…But now he seems to be a big part of the bullpen and a leader out there. Is that the overall feeling of the team?
Toughest call this winter is what to do in the outfield. We have an entire roster of 4th outfielders. If there’s an outfielder out there available via trade that is a big upgrade, JD will have to check it out. Losing Padilla and Blalock off the payroll is going to give the club some flexibility. Murphy, Hamilton, Cruz – I would make them all available. Jones is out. I would only consider Byrd at the right price. He doesn’t have the numbers to command big money in my mind.
@1st Time Caller: I think it would have to be the April 15 rout of Baltimore in which Ian Kinsler went 6-for-6 with a cycle on the way to a 19-6 win. Rangers fell down 3-1 in that game, then scored 12 unanswered runs.
OH MY!!
Well this is an interesting turn of events.
seems to be this team can’t move to the next level until the ownership issues are settled…..meaning hicks has to be gone……it’s the extra $$$ to be spent on the bullpen……it’s the extra $$$$$ to add a RH power bat at the trade deadline…….the youth movement is great but seldem is that enough to push a team to post-season success………..
Never mind…
alright, question that has to be asked – whats the largest comeback in team history?
Go Rangers! Now, back to checking my daughter’s homework.
@Rangers Fan: There are no problems with Wilson in the clubhouse. He’s always going to be a little flaky and flippant in the way he addresses the media. Sometimes it’s endearing; sometimes not. At this point, teammates have come to regard Wilson as a solid reliever and reliable teammate whose eclectic interests don’t necessarily match up with their own.
This is a game people…
So, will cecil come back out for the 6th?
@john in clearwater Byrd’s number are just above average, but his leadership tells me he has to be retained. Behind MY, he seems to be the second leader in the clubhouse.
Do I dare hope? I came back, so I guess I do!
@Evan: Good to know…clearly, they are endearing to me. Never a boring cliche answer from CJ…and isn’t that all we really want in a ballplayer? OK…results too. But this year he’s got both. Love it.
there’s an old saying in sports……..”you can’t overcome a bad owner”………
unless the bass brothers step up i just won’t be very optimistic long term…….dallas fort worth just doesn’t appear to be able to produce a decent baseball owner…………eddie chiles? brad corbett? tom hicks? any argument?
Wow, glad I didnt turn it off. I mean it’s on mute, but it’s not off.
Let’s hope they complete it now. Gotta make it all the way back.
@Jack_Daddy: Sure you aren’t peeking at your TV.
@JustSaying
Rumor is that Nolan is putting together this ownership group, and that GWB (arguably bad presidency, but wasnt a bad owner) is a part of the group.
If Nolan is behind it, I like it. Well, except for the digital ribbon around the ballpark, but I digress.
Gunter, I like the ribbon, they need a replay board somewhere so the fans in right can see it.
The board they have has the mesh in front and is really hard to see.
The definition of a shutdown inning!
@Just Saying: Actually, I think the public perception is that there are very few “good” owners in baseball. Arte Moreno probably gets a lot of positive reviews. Auggie Busch used to when he owned the Cardinals. The Red Sox group does because they’ve won, but if they miss the playoffs this year, oh, my, it could get interesting.
Owners are extremely rich guys who are making more money off our passion. It’s hard for them to turn a profit and look “good” in the community without winning the World Series every year.
Gunter -
Byrd is the one guy I would keep (along with Borbon), but I don’t overpay for him just because he’s good in the clubhouse.
Speaking of presidents…Let’s get the “YES WE CAN” chant going in the ballpark…
Evan, what did Freel do to piss off the Rangers?
Pertinent words for tonight:
You can’t sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You’ve got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That’s why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver
@Obagain
If it were any other sport I’d be right there with you. There’s just something about my and baseball where I can’t wrap my head around 3 video screens (jumbo tron, ribbon, left field). I hate the AAC because it’s too busy and takes away from the game, and I feel like all the new boards do the same at RBIA. I realize it’s an unpopular-and losing-position, but it’s mine.
I like my baseball unmolested. Then again, I’d also like to not have to drive to f-ing Arlington to see it, but I digress….
Mike E -
What happened to Freel?
@Mike E: Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers to this one yet, but I’m searching.
@John: Released.
@gunter: if you hated the aac before because of the jumbotron, you’re definitely not going to be to keen on it now. they now have the largest HD videoboard in any arena. cuban’s upgrades is slightly overshadowed by jerry’s little purchase.
@Mike E: I don’t think in three days Freel, even if he was so disposed, would have had enough time to really upset anybody. Think it comes down to that it’s entirely possible he wasn’t going to get called up and he asked for his release to try and sign with a team that would or could give him a look in September.
@john in clearwater
1) Please get a shorter name.
2) You’re keeping Hamilton, so that’s a given. Cruz too, because you need that power. That leaves Byrd and Murphy, of whom one will be fill in for off-days and give people days off. I think Murph is the better player, but Byrd is the better clubouse guy.
Problem is, you’ve got Borbon too. And honestly, through 3 weeks, with what Borbon can inject into an offense, I have a hard time not finding a starting spot for him. So between Murph and Byrd, someone has to get squeezed out.
If this game ends in a 4 run loss, I will officially question the manager of this team for creating a loss tonight.
10. josh finally answered my question
Evan, regarding Josh, to me he does not look as big as he was last year. He appears to be able to make plays and run so I assume he is over his surgery but is he below his playing weight of last year?
@jb but thats the thing, for some odd reason, i dont hold other sports to the same standard i do baseball. i mean, it’s baseball. it’s field of drams, its supposed to be old school. i know it doesnt make sense, but its just me.
i want baseball with an old park, no wave, a single jumbotron, and cheap beer. and not in a suburb. is that too much to ask?
Well we haven’t seen any games like this recently…or this year..maybe we’re due?
could this be the reverse-catastrophic moment?
Wow, if we can come back and win this…huge, just huge. This might be the thing that fires them up for a 10 game winning streak or the like.
Nice golf swing from kins.
Can Mike Young make up for last night? I think he will. I hope he will. I really hope he will.
You think they are discussing the inevitability of Ian stealing 2nd?
@gunter: i’m with ya’
@jb: At the very least it has prevented a catastrophic moment.
That sound is music to my ears
Holland w/ 10 earned runs… that will bruise even the best ERA.
I’m making my call.
Well good thing Hamilton hits lefties better than righties…I think.
Hey RF, the ball is in field goal range. It’s a long shot, but the hard work has been done. Are these football references getting easier to swallow yet?
We’ll see if Hammy can make me feel better about the question I asked earlier…
Gunter -
I can’t change my name – it’s the name my father gave me. I can’t help it. There’s nothing that says the Rangers have to keep Hamilton. Beyond that, the Rangers need more consistent production out of their outfielders. Being universally “okay” in all three spots probably won’t get you into the playoffs, especially winning playoff games, of which the Rangers have won only one in their entire 37 year existence. I know because that’s how long I’ve followed them.
So who is gonna call Jack Daddy? Tell him to tune back in?
Good call RF
I’ll take it.
The kick is up. It looks straight, but does it have the distance?
@John are you really implying that Hamilton would be an odd man out? His upside is MVP-worthy.
gunter, his loss.
That will teach him to give up.
@Ryans Dad: Only because this is a helluva stand….
@John: I think we can all agree Hamilton is above average in all areas…regardless of numbers this year.
I can’t concentrate on my daughter’s homework. Geez, we are going to win this one!!!!
Maybe Jack Daddy is the problem…
Just think about the poor fans in toronto who are saying we had an 11 run lead, if that isnt enough what is?
I noticed at my golf course yesterday that the wind was blowing in the opposite direction than it usually does. Figured that might affect the homers tonight, not sure Toronto got that memo. Or Nellie.
I thought, off the bat, Byrd had the distance. But maybe thats just the homer in me.
@Joe A: Weight fluctuates so much during the season and I am a terrible judge of who looks heavier and who doesn’t. I don’t get the feeling that Hamilton is too light to drive the ball. I just think his swing was so messed up that it’s going to take some degree of progression for him to get back to hitting for power. He may not get it back this year.
Need to be getting the shutdown every inning here…for the remaining innings actually. O’Day rusty? Hasn’t pitched in 4 days?…5?
If that’s rusty, I’ll take it.
A guy can’t go to class one night w/o the team falling behind by 11, then closing it to 2.
Problem is – to come this far back and fall short is just more of a kick to the jimmy than had they just gotten whooped.
@Evan – Any chance Josh’s ribs are still bothering him at all preventing him from getting a power stroke?
nice throw out!
@obagain: They are probably saying “!@^%# Gaston left Cecil in too long!”…and they’d probably be right, but I’ll gladly take it.
Can I just say that, as pessimistic as I was early, I did call this the other day. When Toronto choked against Boston, I posted “Toronto has packed it in for the year, can’t count on them to hold a lead, no matter how large”
@LotR, I say the only logical thing to do is quit school.
Can they ?
You just get that feeling now…I’m just sayin’…
If we do take the lead, we HAVE to hold it. Remember that Boston game last year? That was the beginning of the end for us…
@Fred, granted if one of the players had made the play everything would be mute. My problem is how Wash handled the Redmond at bat. This is a managerial, not a player move. Sitiuation, tied game with 1 out in the 8th and runners on 2nd and 3rd and redmond at bat who is hitting .198 vs righty and .385 vs lefty. What do you do as a manager:
Option A: you leave CJ in and intl walk redmond. Load the bases but also have the MLB leading team in turning DP. To pitch to n punto who is hitting .211 vs a lefty. Solid choice if you are a manager.
Option B: you pull CJ for a righty, believe NF was available for 1 at bat according to evan. Redmond is batting .198 vs a righty. If wash makes this move I could understand.
Option C: leave CJ in vs redmond who is batting .385 vs the lefty. And ends up with the game winning RBI.
As Wash, what do you do?
Mike E, with him having surgery he might not have the flexability all the way back.
I like the power but as long as he is producing I an not worried about it.
@Mike E: OB makes a point about flexibility, but I think his ribs are fine.
@Beer: the best thing would be to win it in the 9th so that we don’t have to hold the lead.
Ranger Fan and Gunter -
I’m not implying, I’m absolutely saying that Hamilton could be traded. Great guy, but his performance this year doesn’t make him untouchable. If you want to make it to the top of the mountain, you can’t settle for average.
Let’s take the kid off the hook! And by the way since nobody mentioned it, great job by Mathis tonight.
Ranger need for next year rh MY clone that walks alot.Rather have lots of consistent hits than lots of power and strikeouts’
Norm Hitges foretold of this night for Teagarden today on his show.
@Evan: I think it’s progress if Hammy keeps hitting the ball even if they are base hits. It’s better than strike outs.
I go away to do a little business communication. I come back and the trash can is empty and my dog is pregnant. What did you guys feed the Rangers? Has Wash been calling looking for game changing advice?
Great Job. Keep it Up!!
DC, I argee totally.
Doubt we get a MY clone but a guy that hits 305 and walks more than K’s would be nice.
Agree DC…we don’t lack power…2nd in homeruns in the league. A OBP would be helpful.
@Tom B, sorry about your dog. That was my bad.
Is this pitcher the skinniest guy in baseball?
You can’t trade Hamilton now, not because he’s too great a guy, etc… because you’re selling low.
At this point, you take him to arb, and put him in Right.
@Ehren: Agreed.
@RD, Thanks, she was ugly anyway.
Good AB for TT there…real good.
Comfortable with Crush being up in this situation?
I am.
Beware of the Norm declaration!
Who’s running this blog, Evan or the great one, Jeff Miller?
Good AB by TT. Hit or no.
Norm cost me a lot of money last year…..
davis ALMOST had it!
Holy crap
I just threw up in my mouth
Damn…
Still gets a run though.
Dead gum…hey got a run there. What a catch…
who is giddy?
Mr T with Three. Good Show!
That was a heck of a catch. Might have saved the game for these schmucks
@ALL: Just in case you, like me, are having visions of that strange game in Boston last year in which the Rangers rallied from some huge deficit to take a lead before losing 19-17, the Red Sox never led by more than 10 runs. And that was after the first and after the third. Toronto led by 11 going to the bottom of the fifth tonight.
Well they’ve taken care of Holland’s runs tonight.
Imagine Holland not getting a loss with 10 earned runs…
And Millwood not getting a win with 2.
Crazy.
@Beesley: hope you had a good dinner.
Way to be a downer Evan…
he was safe!!!! i just rewound it and did frame by frame.
This team makes me insane.
@ehren: so did i.. and he was!
well… from that view….
Guys, I think he was out…maybe a faster runner would have been safe.
I think you need to recheck that Ehren, I thought so too until I saw that last replay
Guess he wasn’t.
And pizza is always good 3 or 4 times around.
oday pitching like this would have come in handy yesterday.
i just saw that different view. out by 2 inches
Captain Obvious says: NO MORE RUNS!
Has anyone counted the Blue Jays relievers tonight? It’s a bunch!
@auditor–or, it could have even been moot!
Need a DP…haven’t had one yet…
A Dr. Pepper does sound pretty good.
Why isn’t the great one, Jeff Miller chiming in?
TT is responding well…
Thank you NORM!
OH HELL YEAH!
NOW LET’S DO THIS!!!!
People should trash Teagarden before every game
Guess TT is alright.
Who doesn’t love an 8th inning dad joke?
Looks like miller might have an internet stalker.
no stealing tonight
TT is a young player with a lot of potential. Tonight we are seeing much of his potential.
Anyone else switching back and forth between this and the riveting Houston/Minnesota game?
Could someone send a telepathy message, “HOMER”
TT has potential, but can he stay healthy for 162?
Kinsler loafing?
Was Kinsler hustling the whole way?
Evan is the 7 runs tonight the most in one inning this year?
Kinsler is the new A. Jones when running to first base.
Radio guys implying that Kinsler could have run harder there. What did it look like on TV?
I guess Kinsler was loafing
The won’t show the replay of Kinsler running
I would have thought Kins could beat that after the drop.
Now that was hustle
Hard to imagine that he was in full flight before the bobble, it was pretty bang-bang though.
Kinsler does have the hamstring issue, just sayin…
Would have been a double play anyway, Radio Guys
This would be a good time for Jesus to do Josh a solid.
@DC: Rangers had eight in the 19-6 Baltimore thrashing in April.
@Ryan’s Dad: Kinsler swings hard and is often off balance, so while he’s quick, he doesn’t often get a good first step out of the batters box. But, yes, I’d like to sse replay of the jump he got.
@Beer: no telling. they only showed kins at the end.
[...] post: Dallas Sports: Texas Rangers News Dallas Cowboys News Dallas … Comments [...]
i think young just showed up kins. he ran his @ss off.
They didn’t even show Kinsler not running so why is everyone assuming he didn’t run?
Whoever requested that we wait until the 9th to finish this bad boy off will hopefully get their wish.
@Rangers Fan because we’ve seen Kins beat that out in the past….
Don’t you know, if the Jays lose this game they will not get back into Canada. Impersonating a Baseball team is a crime up there.
Maybe he did…
but Kinsler is obviously fast, and that was a long play over there at third.
And apparently the radio guys thought it was questionable
RF the guy droped the ball most the time thats enough in the majors.
Sure didn’t look to me like Kins dogged it. In fact, I’ve never seen him dog it
@Gunter: I’ve never seen Kinsler not run a ball out…so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Like I mentioned earlier, the hamstring is still an issue. He’s likely not as quick as he was pre-injury.
Grilli does not need to walk him here…
10:07: Lest you worried, Evan will provide the Post-Game Show.
I clearly put a question mark at the end of my post because I was not sure. That 3rd baseman made a great recovery and excellent throw. Might have saved the game for these schmucks
Freakin’ Grilli
Kinsler NEVER hustles out of the box… He’s a prima dona when it comes to hustling out of the box. If he gets on, maybe we score, tie, and take the lead, but since he loafed…Unlike the GREAT MY… Kins just cost us a huge inning.
that hurt.
That didn’t help a whole lot
Well that doesn’t help the cause.
Still not worried.
or give up a homer…
@Jeff M, Your alter-ego, Mr Clean was in. He said you still owe him money
GET HIM OUT NOW! DO NOT GIVE THIS AWAY…Wash should have taken Holland out sooner and he didn’t. Do not give him one more batter.
damn
@Texas Rocks-once again, you see things that these experienced old eyes can’t see. Hats off to your vision!
@Texas: I always wonder if you really watch Rangers games. I have NEVER seen Kinsler not hustle.
How much bullpen do you use tonight staring at a double-header tomorrow?
10:11: The last time that the Rangers scored in double figures and didn’t win was NOT the infamous 19-17 doozy at Boston last August. In September, they lost at home to the Angels 15-13.
I think TT got crossed up, there===not another muff
Walk away for two minutes and the Jays pound one out. Grilli … what up?
Which is worse? Losing 11-0 or losing 12-10?
Also, the following batters hit a grounder (that would have been a dp) and a strkeout. Not really the making for a huge inning.
Grilli meltdown?
Thanks Ron, you’ve done it again.
What a soul crusher. Thanks, Jason.
@Fred, GREAT point… it could have been MOOT!
Well, wash again makes sure we cant come back.
Why save the BP now, we have reserves on the way.
@1st: Neither! Losing 13-10 is even worse.
They later said a number of people saw him stumble out of the box, so likely not just being lazy.
What about losing 21-10? Then it’s kind of the same difference with better offensive stats.
What a shame ….
Kinsler legacy is saved
For what its worth, I’m at the game and Kins definately loafed it to first on that grounder.
Forget the fact he was a huge part of this comeback…he probably dogged it since he didn’t beat out a hard hit ground-chopper…
Again- why was he not brought in before after Grilli has pitched a lot recently…Seriously, Washington has got to go. Just has to.
Nasty stuff from Strop.
Win or lose, I respect the boys for not giving up.
as soon as i saw grilli warming up i knew this was going to happen. he pitched yesterday. why would you want to use him 2 days in a row when you have other options? might as well bring in someone thats tired huh? its a much better option. washington is terrible. get him out of here. please.
…vote for Pedro…
LAA up by 4.
Is Strop projected as a starter? He looks good in relief. Get some of these young power guys in the bullpen next year replacing the old ineffective guys and this might be quite the team.
Best news of the DAY: Cotton Bowl will no longer be played at 10 am on New Years Day. Well, at least starting in 2011.
Strop is going to have a fine MLB career.
So what if he did loaf, that is certainly not a problem on this team and it will serve as a reminder to all (a la Michael Young) to never give up on the basepath. I’m not sure that anyone in this virtual room could ground out 75-100 times in one season and say they would give full speed every time, no matter how much they pay you.
I think Washington would make a great video game manager where fatigue is turned off. Maybe he learned his ropes with RBI baseball back in the day.
Kinsler’s lazy play didn’t matter – Young’s hit was a made-to-order DP ball.
Look at that – Kinsler sloppy play in the field just cost another out.
Plays like these are what kept Kinsler from being an all-star this season. The players know …
Strop looks like he is for real. If your short guys next year are Franky, Feliz, CJ and Strop you could really have an excellent bullpen.
I also think that the team will trade some of the farm team prospects like Poveda that are blocked for a LH reliever also. If you add one more power lefty to that foursome of Franky, Feliz, CJ and Strop, you really have something.
Can’t understand Grilli’s struggles as of late…
SLOPPY PLAY?? What are you talking about? First, Wells beat the ball back and 2. he’s not a first basemen..he gave it his best stretch. Geez I’m glad I’m not a player that plays for us fans…
Tom, Kinsler was left out of the All Star Game due to his monumental offensive struggles. His fielding has been better than ever.
Only 7 more to go to return things the way they were supposed to be apparently
hmmm, maybe washington should actually use the players that are brought up. just an idea…
oh and murphy has looked pathetic playing left field tonight.
He was looking for that high hard one. Strop doesn’t quite have the location thing down yet, but he does have potential.
kaisersoze, feliz will be a sterter next year, count on it.
There’s not way that fly out should have even been that close. No one was at fault there (except almost the base runner)
The claim that the Rangers play at the level of their competition seems real. I wonder if that is simply a consequence of playing so many young players.
tom, he was safe, he would have needed go go gadget arms to make it even close. glasses?
Baseball is a great sport. The Rangers have given up 14 runs and the big complaint is Kinsler not coming up with a throw from the deep outfield.
POLL, yea or na- Rangers make the playoffs this year if John Madden (current manager of TB) is the manager of the Rangers this year?
Let’s get one more out and let the good guys hit!!!
Wow, did you see that?
Perhaps they should fasten the sceen to the facade DIRECTLY BEHIND HOME PLATE!
Strop’s problem, in the minors, was control. Not his stuff
Note to self: do not sit behind home plate.
Auditor, the Rangers make the playoffs and do so with success if anyone other than Wash is managing!
So is wash leaving the kid in to see how he handles adversity?
Assuming we lose this game, we’ll be 5-8 in our last 13 games.
Deja vu all over again–circa 2008
Wow… he walked him. Youth..
They announce the attendance of this game yet? Must have been a lot of people leaving early.
Well, less of a heartbreaker. Should teach us a lesson, never give up on this team. They’re not giving up.
10:29: Most runs allowed by the Rangers since their first road game of the season, that 15-2 loss at Detroit that began six losses in six games there this season.
@Auditor, Maybe or Maybe not….definitely
Is Feliz really warming up???
@obagain – nope. He’s saving the arms for tomorrow.
yea
my nephew called me when it was 11-7. turned it on just in time for the rally to end. went back to Mad Men. Called me again after kins made it 11-8. turned it on jus time for my to whiff and Hammy pick him up.
Went back to Mad Men. Turned it back on just in time to see Murphy blunder the basepaths and Davis pick him him up, only to just miss a home run.
Yes, 12-10 hurts worse than 11-0. but 14-10 doesn’t hurt as bad as 12-10.
This one was just too painful for me to watch.
I HOPE (and THINK) that Kins hammy led him to not run full speed (if that was even the case). IF he DID load (which I don’t think he did), then baseball gods won’t be on our side for a while.
Grilli has looked awful 4 of out 5 now. He was lucky on Sunday that Mauer hits the ball really, really hard.
This game is the equivalent of a really girl coming insider after a date, refusing your advances and going home. Then calling you to say she felt bad for the way she acted and telling you to come over to her place. Only you get there and all she wants to do is cuddle. You were already annoyed, but at least you were in your own bed and ready to put it past you. Now you’re stuck thinking about it and are stuck with her all night.
Like sux sometimes. The beauty of baseball? The play 2 tomorrow.
They might bat with an empty house tonight.
……………
Geeze, I was just kidding about the 21-10! Please stop it!!!
Did you see Kinsler loafing toward the hole and not come up with that ground ball???
And yes, I am kidding….
You would even con sider wasting Feliz in this one……. STUPID!
shouldnt that be our 4-5th error on the night?
Strop to Holland–anything you can do, I can do worse!
Alright all, I’m out. If they come back from this….well, then I’ll be damned. Gonna get to work early so I can hit that doubleheader tomorrow.
Strop is at 35 pitches. A lot for a new guy.
I haven’t seen a guy have so much trouble after getting two strikes.
We’re going to need strong efforts from starters tomorrow…
You know, if you took away the first and the last innings, the Rangers would be winning this game 10-6. That is apropos of nothing. Just tired-headed sarcasm.
@obagain-you’ve lost me. Please list the 4-5 errors. I remember MY’s, but may have missed the others
Good maybe Tom B as an absolute definitely, I assume you must have been referencing my comment about the Cotton Bowl not starting at 10 am?
Went to the OU vs Ark game a few years back and trying to get up that early after New Year’s Eve was a bit try some.
Well, we’ve got 8 runs to make up. It would seem like we need a few baserunners….
Best post tonight?
“The beauty of baseball? The play 2 tomorrow.”
Good night.
murph should have had 2 and josh had one.
I think there was another one but cant think of what it was.
@Jack Daddy: Like I said earlier…when people asked where you were…you might have been the problem!
I guess the votes for Strop have quieted
Angels up 7-0. Surely that lead isn’t safe tonight.
Evan, one last question please. How in the world did Josh’s swing ever get that messed up?
I would send Hicks a bill for the time I’ve wasted tonight if I thought he could afford to pay for it.
@RF1964: That would be courtesy of the great Rudy…
I think we have Frazier right where we want him – just eight runs down.
This could be over by Labor Day….
@Ryan’s Dad: We need a TD with a 2-pt conversion…
@Evan-What;s Hammy hitting since he came back. Wish he’s hit another out, tho
don’t think this aborted comeback was a waste. It wasn’t. We forced them to burn their bullpen when they had an 11 run lead. On the flip-side, we saved FF, CJ and Feliz, the back side of the pen. That will play to our advantage the next 2 days.
If we take 3 out of these 4, then this will be a successful series and homestand.
I was typing during Strop’s pitches, only saw the walk. How did he look? Did Kins make an error that I missed in the inning?
Dog poop of a game.
Who else is riveted by the Oak 5 and KC 5 score. This is a crucial game.
Toronto has 7 walks 2nite, the good guys have just one.
Give up on the team if you want, but I don’t see why you would. They’ve never given up all year. I don’t know if they make the playoffs or not, and oddly, I’m not going to be heartbroken if we don’t. This team is growing, improving and more to come next year. A team that plays as hard as they have all year, they deserve all the support they can get.
There you go RF, see how fun it can be.
Hammy was hitting .286 since returning from the DL before tonight’sgame. Just two HR’s.
Ah poop.
Get ‘em tommorow, Rangers. Peace all.
and that, Buck, is a continuing story for our guys
When it comes to player of the game, I’m torn between Mathis and Teagarden. Any thoughts?
Strop is what he is. A live, electric arm w/ sporadic control (at best). He looked great at times and then he looked bad at times. He’ll come around. He’s only been pitching for 2 years.
Buck, why walk, only 8 HR and we tie this thing up.
@Jack Daddy: No error…apparently he’s supposed to make an out on a throw that didn’t even beat the batter there…wierd, huh?
Someone please tell me why Rudy was jackin with Hammy’s swing in the first place….
I do not miss the almost 4 hour games.
Sorry, I was away from the computer for a while.
Kinsler wants to be a leadoff hitter. Leadoff hitters have to hustle ALL THE TIME, not just when it suits them.
@RF1974, cuz they won’t let him administer shots anymore and he has to do something. JUST KIDDING. I had to get my Rudy shot in tonight.
@Ryan’s Dad: I’ll take a team battling back like they did over a team that could have mailed it in being down 11 any day….
@RF – i’m with you buddy. My disappointment in missing the playoffs will last all of 24 hours (well, unless we get eliminated on the last day), at which point I will start dreaming of next year. This year has been great. The fact that this is the first clunker that I can think of (well Nippert’s Cle start had no chance) in a while tells you good this season has been. Have never had more fun watching this team.
People are just frustrated, and that’s fine. Better than indifference, that’s for sure.
Oh, and there is NO DOUBT that I cost us this game. No question about it!!
Tomorrow is another day. You can add Toronto to the list of hated teams after this one. We need to take two from these guys tomorrow.
Wash is going to have to be careful here. A young team may get down. I’m sure the guys are a bit tired, but if they can catch a second wind … well, they will be right there in it. Toronto is mailing in the season and we just couldn’t turn in a decent performance.
Wash will need to step it up in the management dept.
prediction for tomorrow: Split.
I agree with that RF. I would also like to recant a declaration I made about a month ago about this team being the best Ranger team ever. The future is bright, but I was wrong about that.
@Jack Daddy: I’m glad you can be accountable. I’ll own up…Tegarden showed me something tonight.
@obagain – that was last year’s strategy.
Kins’s hitting for average down, Blaylock,
Hamilton regressed, CD went backwards, both catchers…..does Rudy teach pull hitting and swing for the fences… and san’s a little chemical help the formula does not work………hmmmmm.. and I’m not kidding.
Maybe the Rangers need Mo’ PEDS to make through the last month… you know, for the tired legs.
Anyone notice when Evan goes missing late in the game he is writing the Post Game Recap? Should be out soon I would suspect.
1974 on target……..kinsler…..hamilton…..davis…..all sub-par years and we’re still competing……..says a lot about MY and our rookies……….
DH Sweep tomorrow. We will score a total of 11 runs.
