Here’s your chance to help dictate the direction of Inside Corner’s fall coverage. While we will be covering all things baseball (and in depth, I might add), we want to provide something of interest during the other seasons, too. Obviously, Bob Sturm will offer tons of Cowboys analysis and I’ll chime in there occasionally and also offer some college morsels. But, what about high school football? Since the season is upon us – I completely zeroed out over Zero Week – I offer up this question:
Should the Corner “adopt” a local team to offer up some weekly coverage this season? So, respond to these queries:
1. Yes or no?
2. If yes, please nominate a school and a compelling reason why multiple stories about said school might be interesting to a wider audience than just alums and students.
no. in fact, not only no, but hell no
why not?
you could either pick one of the powers in the area … or just a random small school …
Lamar, Duncanville, Desoto, Cedar Hill
I might go with Bowie, who after years of mediocrity, are finally coming into relevance …
Yes, Garland all the way.
Please…Southlake Dragons…needs no explanation
NO!!! Why try to be all things to all people?
I’m only answering this because I went to Skyline and they are potentially a state champion candidate.
however, if you cover 1 team, you’ll like 2 people following.
I would suggest 5 teams:
1. DISD school (i.e. Skyline or Carter)
2. North Suburb (i.e. SL Carroll (or are they west?) or Allen)
3. West School (Trinity)
4. East School (Longview)
5. South School (Cedar Hill)
This way, you’ll have at least 10 followers.
not Southlake or Highland Park! Go with a more blue collar team, a team that can’t afford to recruit their players. Arlington High, Mansfield, or Trinity would all be good to follow.
How about Anna High School? Go Coyotes!!!!!!!
No. Stick to mostly Rangers with other pro sports thrown in. Lots to talk about with prospects in fall leagues and winter ball, offseason moves, sign Scheppers.
There is hardly a dearth of attention paid to football in this area. We really don’t need more.
a strong no.
How bout going with a former state power, who has very quietly been on the rise the past 2 years. They also have an exciting senior Running Back who has commited to Michigan. Flower Mound Marcus,a team that we should all be paying attention to. With Katy and Tyler Lee on the non-district slate and then the 6-5A matchups with Southlake, Coppell, and Hebron to name a few. Cound make for some great stories.

Please No
no, please no
I also say no.
I don’t think you’ll have enough readers interested if you pick just 1 or a few teams. People don’t care.
However, I am intrigued by the fact that the DISD hasn’t won a state title since the 50s (Sunset — Carter forfeited in 88).
I would be interested in this:
Follow the DISD schools that have a legitimate chance to win either the 4A or 5A title. There is probably a half dozen. You can whittle the list down as they fall out.
A DISD team winning state for the first time in 50 years is a pretty big story. There are lots of good articles you could write:
1. reasons why it hasn’t happened;
2. changes being made that now might make it possible;
3. re-tell the Sunset championship story;
4. re-tell teh Carter story
5. detail some of the players on these elite DISD teams (many of which I’m sure have pretty intriguing public interest stories);
6. notable DISD alumni
That would have some story to it and this is D Magazine, for heaven sake (not suburb magazine).
i agree with caleb. southlake and HP get a ton of coverage. as the former garland high owl, i would suggest garland, but that’s just selfish.
it’s an interesting idea, but i don’t think it would be a huge follower generator. maybe once a week you could recruit a high school journalism student and get them to write about their school’s team…just an idea. you know, for the kids.
YES! Cover a team like Hillcrest or WT White in Dallas. Even though they don’t won state, they make playoffs, have great traditions & great fans. Both are north Dallas schools, not another story on yet another suburb football team. HHS & WT actually start their seasons against each other this Friday….. There are ‘challenges’ between the schools & the principals have made a friendly bet to see who wears the others jersey to school Monday…… Anyways, it’s a fun group out tailgating & supporting the kids. A great
small town feel right in the middle of Dallas. Cover a school likethat!
Thanks for asking for input on this but my answer is:
NO NO NO
If you feel the need to cover high school football, Becca has the right idea. Guest columnists at any skill level is the way to go. Don’t restrict your writers ability to find the intriguing stories all around this great state of Texas(Or at least the metroplex area).
By the way I enjoy watching high school football as much as the next guy, but reading about them? Meh.
Yes, as long as it’s not Highland Park, Southlake or Trinity.
Yes. Go with TrinityValley School in FW. They are a small private school, not a “church” school, so no one will be offended. They are played for the conference championship the last two years, but came up short both times. They are always slower, smalled, and out manned each week, but they just keep winning. It doesn’t hurt that I also coach there.
No.
Evan, sounds like you’re becoming the head cheese at the “Corner”. I went to Plano Senior but that’s not a good enough reason to cover them. I’d say cover Allen High School because they are defending 5-A Div 1 champs. Plus I live in Allen.
L.D. Bell
Please no. I love you.
in your effort to attract more readers, i might be forced to stay away… please don’t do this!
YES, to the people saying no, just because it is written, doesn’t mean you have to read it.
True, Southlake gets a lot of coverage, but they are trying to regain their dominance of the Todd Dodge era and that can be interesting to follow.
Trinity is also a good suggestion, they are successful but don’t have the coverage and recognition of Southlake.
Arlington Martin. My alum rocked it in week 1.
No, no, no, no, never, never no!
Dear D Magazine,
Greetings from your ol’ pals at Dallas On Budget. You’re looking fabulous today D, as usual. Have you lost weight?
The obvious answer is, most certainly and unequivocally, yes. Below you will find an impeccable top 10 list of reasons why, made just for you D. That’s how much I love you.
TOP 10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD COVER A H.S. FOOTBALL TEAM:
(1) Tell a Texan that football means soccer and you’ll get kicked in the face. Trust us.
(2) Go to any high school football game on Friday (except for Highland Park. Leave them out of this) Go early. Now look at all the old people who are living in the glory days of high school and who are attached to their team, even though little Jimmy is now 45 and making cheese in Wisconsin
(Now pay close attention here, D)
(3) Not everyone in Dallas lives in Highland Park
(4) Not everyone in Dallas thinks like people in Highland Park
(5) Not everyone is Dallas subscribes to D Magazine like Highland Park
(6) Not everyone in Dallas thinks there’s only 1 high school football team in the world like Highland Park
(7) 1.6 Million people live in Dallas (not just Highland Park). 6.4 Mil in DFW.
(8) Those 1.6 million people actually enjoy Highschool Football besides Highland Park
(9) The 1.6 million people who live in Dallas might actually hear of another football team besides Highland Park
(10) For Shock Value. Readers and haters alike wouldn’t believe their eyes when there’s actually something in the magazine besides the latest uptown trendies, boob job surgeons, and who’s the hottest chick in Dallas. I’m talkin’ BONKERS.
You’ll thank me later. Keep the proceeds.
Much love to you and the family,
Dallas On A Budget

Lake Highlands.
While in RISD, the school’s address is in DALLAS (a must for “D” magazine). It’s a known community and football team that either people love or hate (like the Yankees or Red Sox, this will attract readers). Team has a good local following as well (travels well, that’s why they played their first game in Frisco). The community acts like a small town within a much larger city (i.e., no Lake Highlands’ home addresses, they are all in Dallas).
Oh, and the team is ranked within the top 15 by the DMN of area schools and is coming off a successful playoff run last year with many returning starters including its all purpose QB.
If you do it, please do not choose one of the typical big name schools where the only excitement is are they going to win by 20 or 30 and which Div I school the entire starting lineup is going (yawn). Whether a large or small school (I’d prefer small), choose one who’s middle of the road, maybe flirting with a playoff spot. Much more drama there.
No – unless you are just trying to lose readers until next baseball season…
No.
There are way too many teams to chose from. So many that people will not care unless it’s their favorite team.
I say you scrap this idea and put more time into the Dallas Stars.
Please no. Please please please no.
Here is a wild one for you. Denton Ryan. After the smack down on Mesquite Poteet last week, the rest of the season should be very interesting. Oh yeah, Denton starts with a “D”
how about y’all cover… The Dallas Cowboys?? you’re the least rounded “sports” blog ever
yes, s.m.u.
If you do it…..please anyone but Euless Trinity! So tired of hearing about them!!!
NO!!!
Yes
Longview Lobos – they were the talk of the town Saturday after their dramatic comeback over a state ranked 5A team.
Please not…
I completely agree with Jack Daddy.
Dallas on a Budget makes an excellent series of points concerning Highland Park that also applies to Southake.
Trinity High School (Euless) is home to one of the largest Tongan communities in the nation; there are an estimated 4,000 Tongans living in the city at present. However, the City of Dallas population @ 1.6m is somewhat larger – so go with a Big D HS team.
I’d say no. But if you must, consider the Ennis Lions about 30 miles south of Dallas for the following reasons: (1) Ennis is the anti-Highland Park, (2) Ennis is going for its fourth 4A state title of this decade (and fifth overall), (3) the Ennis-Waxahachie game is a heck of a rivalry (the Battle of 287) with both ranked highly this year, and (4) the head coach revealed before the season that he is battling multiple sclerosis.
Props to the guy who brought up my alma mater with L.D. Bell.
That being said, the only reason I wouldn’t bring up the likes of Carroll, Trinity, Cedar Hill, D-ville, or Lake Highlands is because WAAAAAY too many publications not only in our state, but in the U.S. media are already following these teams.
So, if D mag wants to do this, I say go with a team that has high aspirations, but flies under the state/national radar. Maybe a 4a or 3a team with promise. Give the little guys some love for once….
No, no, no, no,no, no, no, no, no, no… no.
@travis – funny.
Just another reason NOT to tune in after baseball season. Gag me with a Lite Beer.
Be Creative. Go where no blog has gone before. How about Evan goes to Winter Ball? Like cover Rangers players all over the Carribean and Puerto Rico, Dom.Rep. or Venz. That way we can know when the season starts who is hot and who is not.Follow Rangers prospects in their Winter offtime or learning time. Evan can return all tan, fit and ready for a vacation. Do you need an assistant? I understand Israel has a bangup league, The West Bank Sabre Rattlers are dynamite. When they play the Palestinian Pill Boxes it is a show to remember. Fire Works shows draw large crowds.

No! I live in Oklahoma and don’t want to read about Texas high school teams. I want to read about the Rangers.
I have a suggestion. First of all, yes, it doesn’t hurt and would increase traffic with more coverage of more things. On to my suggestion..
Why 1 team to follow all year? Only the true nuts or recruiting services cover all of high school football. Most fans will pay attention to one division or just their school.
How about you just cover a GAME OF THE WEEK??
Pick a game with high importance to either division or just 2 powerhouses or 2 teams filled with D1 talent. For example Desoto and Cedar Hill just played and there is a ton of college prospects in there. Give a recap of the game and point out the prospects in that game to excite the high school fans and the college recruiting fans alike…
Yes, but no 5A or 4A schools, and no Celina, they get too much pub.
I’m thinking Pilot Point Bearcats!
It would be a great idea if you could do it adequately.
However, the only way you can cover high school football adequately would be to get a J student at each high school to send you a concise weekly write up. Then you could perhaps break it down by district and readers could read up on the districts/teams that they are interested in and ignore the rest.
Adopting one team to cover and following them the entire year is a recipe for disaster. It would be a total failure if you tried to do that for college football…and their are ten times as many high schools.
Interesting idea and might be worth pursuing – I like the game of the week idea or maybe a run down and hop from division to division from week to week
spotlights might be the better way to go … every other week or so put up something about the team … a little history, famous alumns, and then a current snapshot
could be kind of cool
Sulphur Springs- the dmn doesnt want to cover east tx but we are the defending state champs
I wouldn’t be interested in any HS football coverage. However, I would be interested in any/all coverage of Texas’ major college football programs (UT, A&M, Tech, etc).
No. That’s a ridiculous plan.
Grand Prairie.
Coach Bartel and his son on same staff.
Tradition.
Football and family.
It’s what Texas is all about.
Trinity Valley (Fort Worth)
F NO! If you’re looking for something new to cover, then let’s do the Big XII South
Why not Keller? (Not the ones in FW, but *Keller*) They are Southlake’s little brother, always in the shadow, and their program keeps getting stripped every time the KISD opens a new high school in Ft. Worth…
YES to Covering High School Football, it is Texas after all, but No to picking just one school. I think most people would just skip right over the stories with the thoughts of WHY THE HELL DO I CARE ABOUT THE TEAM FROM ALLEN, PILOT POINT, CARTER ETC.
Focusing on one prime game a game is nice, but I think if you only do that most people will do the same thing and skip over the story on Lewsiville Fightin’ Farmers verus Woodrow Wilson Wildcats.
But maybe a weekly preview of the big games, and a following wrap up afterwards, highlighing a few games or a great performance by some kid. That way the more than three dozen different schools that have been suggested would all get at least little covverage.
But if does come down to one team I suggest my nephew’s under 8 YMCA Green Bay Packer’s team. Weighin in at just under the 85 pound weight limit he’ll be running over kids left and right
