An MRI exam Wednesday confirmed a significant strain of 3B Michael Young’s left hamstring. GM Jon Daniels, in an email, said that Young will likely be out “a couple of weeks,” though exactly how long is uncertain.
Young is receiving an injection of blood platelets to accelerate the healing process. Here is an on-line discussion about the rather new therapy (Mark Teixeira had it for his hip injury in 2007).
Bad news. Fortunately, the Rangers’ schedule isn’t exactly strenuous over that period….it’s gonna be tough still with the way they play against lesser competition and MY out. It may keep us from the playoffs. Even if he misses most of September, the important thing is that it’s not anything career-threatening and he’s ONLY out 2-3 weeks.
Sounds and looked a lot like Kinsler’s same hmastring strain earlier this year. Kinsler’s happened July 28, I believe, and he came back August 15th after a rehab stint. Figuring in the fact that Kinsler could have played Aug. 14th, but had travel delays, and assuming that Young skips a rehab assignment during this crucial time, I think Young could be back Sept. 18 after the off day, just in time for the Angels!!!!—and fresh for the playoffs…..
Chris Davis to third for two weeks? It’s where he played most of the last month…Blalock? Who?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
German and Vizquel at 3rd. No Blalock!!!!!
If there’s any silver lining, it’s that he could be back (and will probably push to be back) by the last – and potentially the most important – week of the season. There’s the 3 games with the Rays, 4 with LAA, and 4 with the Mariners.
@Jesse: the way I read this (and previous info) MY’s strain is more significant than Kinsler’s was. When Kins hurt his, he barely limped when it happened. Hopefully, though, the platelet injections will help.
@evan: this is awesome information! you get a gold star!
I guees Ron will mix and match at 3B with Omar, German and Davis. Unfortunately, this means more ABs for Blalock.
The “silver lining” is that MY should be rested and refreshed for that last week of the season and the playoffs. I really think the 2 weeks on the DL helped Ian, and 2-3 weeks off should help MY, also. Hopefully, the rest of the lineup can pick up the slack.
I’m afraid this will seriously diminish our chance of making the playoffs. I think keeping Davis at first and putting Vizquel and/or German over at third is a better lineup than Blalock at 1st with Davis at third.
When MY has been on an 18 game hitting streak, prior to the day (Not the game) it happened, it’s hard to say this will help.
Someone will get some extra playing time and that might be a nice thing but probably never enough to cover MYs loss.

Completely off subjuct: is Mike Hindman AWOL or is my dementia kicking in?
MY being out does not necessarily kill any post season chance. If a couple of other players step up and produce as they are starting to show they can…Davis, Hamilton, Kinsler. They can make up for the loss of offense. I expect Omar to get most of the games at 3rd while MY is out. He can create walks and get some hits. between the four of them I believe they can make up for most of MY’s offense if not all of it as long as they stay hot. As for the defense, Omar I believe is equal to MY if not a tiny bit better just because of his longevity on that side of the infield.
Bummer for MY. Finally, a sept where’s he’s w/ a Rangers team that has a good shot at the post season.
This is one of those rare times that I actually think human cloning might make sense. Maybe he could just sprinkle his DNA on some of the guys and see if they automagically inherit some of his characteristics. On second thought…
Get Well Soon, MY! We are going to miss you.
@Evan: I’ve also been wondering about the great MJH. I hope he’s just on vacation.
@scoop: i’m really hoping that MY’s season isn’t over cause that reaction was not a sign of a small pull. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tore it.
If only Smoak was tearing the cover off the ball down at AAA…
Here is my lineup with MY out:
vs. righties:
LF Borbon
C Rodriguez
CF Hamilton
RF Byrd
2B Kinsler
DH Cruz/Murphy
1B Davis/Blalock
3B Vizquel/Davis
SS Andrus
vs. lefties
DH Borbon
1B Rodriguez
CF Hamilton
LF Byrd
2B Kinsler
RF Cruz
3B Davis
C Teagarden
SS Andrus
Just a thought
The silver lining is that football is starting
20-10 puts us at 94 wins. We play LAA in a 4 game sets starting Sept. 28th. We have 22 games to make up 2.5 games in the standing so that we enter that series 2 back. Take 3 of 4 and we’re tied with 3 games to go (us vs. Sea, them vs. Oak).
Take 2 of 3 against Sea and it sets it up for a 1 game playoff — to be held in Arlington. That’s right, rule change this winter and home field goes to the team with the best Head to Head record.
So, the next 22 games are important. That’s 3 1/2 weeks of baseball. 2.5 games in 3.5 weeks.
Can we do it? Why not?
