Story of the Game
The Rangers finished up a very brief homestand by gaining ground in both AL playoff races for a second straight day. After RHP Tommy Hunter rebounded from a rough first inning, the Rangers provided him with six runs over the next five innings. SS Elvis Andrus’ two-run homer in the fifth, which followed a leadoff walk by DH Julio Borbon gave the Rangers their first lead. RF Nelson Cruz then led off the sixth with his 30th home run of the season and the Rangers scratched out another run formed by a pair of walks to LF David Murphy and C Ivan Rodriguez.
The bullpen duo of LHP C.J. Wilson and RHP Frank Francisco allowed one baserunner over two efficient innings to close out the game. Both were pitching for the second consecutive day. Wilson had pitched two-thirds of an inning in Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader win, while Francisco, who got the final two outs Wednesday for his 22nd save, pitched in both ends of the doubleheader.
“Every game has to be won,” Wilson said. “We didn’t get over-worked in the early part of the season, so there is a lot left in our arms.”
The Rangers picked up 2.5 games in the AL West over the final two days of the series and now trail Los Angeles, by 3.5 games. The Rangers picked up 1.5 games on Boston Tuesday and Wednesday and trail in the wild card race by 2.5 games.
Three Up
• RHP Tommy Hunter once again had first-inning trouble, but held Toronto to a pair of runs in the inning and just a pair more over the next six to put himself in position for a win.
• OF Nelson Cruz had hits in each of his first three at-bats, including his 30th homer of the season.
•The bullpen stalwarts, LHP C.J. Wilson and RHP Frank Francisco combined to work the last two innings and allow just one baserunner on a night when the bullpen was short-handed after a doubleheader Tuesday. Francisco picked up three saves in two days.
Three Down
• In his first ever start in the No. 3 spot, 2B Ian Kinsler was hitless in four at-bats to end his seven-game hitting streak. Kinsler had four fly ball outs.
• SS Elvis Andrus made his 17th error of the season. Don’t look now, but the Rangers have been a little sloppy in the field lately. They’ve committed 11 errors in their last 14 games after 70 in their first 119.
• This is a disturbing trend. There have been two days in September and the Rangers have had key players leave games with injuries on both of them. On Wednesday, it was CF Josh Hamilton who left with a stiff back.

@Evan: Question on your leader Marlon Byrd. I’m really not liking the quotes coming from him regarding MY being out. Talking about how he’s irreplaceable, going to be so hard, we don’t have anyone who can fill his shoes, etc. While that might be true, you don’t come out and say that and you certainly can’t have that attitude as a team. You HAVE to fill his shoes, collectively. No, no one can fill Young’s shoes. But the team as a whole has to or they’re done. Sounds like a defeatist attitude coming from him. It’s like he’s crying about it. Hey injuries, happen, at bad times. Big time teams, step up. Perhaps, Byrd should step up as he’s been attrocious at the plate. I’m living…overreacting?
@evan: I couldn’t get to the Poll. Anyone else have that problem?
Having only listened to parts of the game, I thought Elvis homer was HUGE. Surprised he wasn’t in consideration for the Player of the Game.
I had problems w/ the micropoll too, but I was writing in my vote anyway.
I file protest on the Player of the Game Poll.
This game changed on 1 swing by 1 very magnetic little Venezuelan.
elvis…..i love this kid and everything he represents and brings to this team……..absolutely love him and his approach to the game………i love you man…………
@Ranger Fan – I don’t really listen too much to what the guys say anymore unless they are goofing around. The video cams that Evan did earlier in the season were entertaining.
Ever since Raffy’s appearance in Washington a few years back, I pretty much don’t believe a lot of what they say any more. Reminded me of a certain President and an intern … but, I digress.
also great contributions from murphy, hunter, frankie and cj
byrd has lost it and needs to stop mumbling under his breath………
does some of wash’s moves make you feel like he’s lashing out passive aggressive over “stuff”…….i’d love to refer him to a pyschoanalyst in the off-season to get out that repressed anger…………i love you wash don’t worry the club picks that up……
I can’t get to the poll either. I write in Dr. Drus as well.
When Elvis hit the dinger, I leaned over to my wife and said, “Elvis has left the building”.
I never get tired of that.
I officially vote for Elvis as player of the game, and ROY. There, I said it.
It’s kind of like the old story: “I’ve been kicked, lied to, spit on and beat-up. The only reason I still hang around here is just to see what is going to happen next.” You just never know with this years Rangers. When does that other team, next door, play again?
Actually my Player of the Game is Elvis. Not only does he hit the homerun to put the team ahead, but he also has the presence of mind to throw the guy out at home after muffing the grounder.
@All: Link has been fixed, though there does appear to be a real movement for Elvis, so I’m going back in and adding him to nominees.
I’ll vote for Elvis every time.
@Tom B: soon. Feel free to go ahead and start watching them. We’ll keep watching this team with heart, guts, and never say die attitude, unlike that gutless bunch next door. Remember 44-6? Nice last impression.
Player of the game is Elvis…big defenisve play to keep the score 3-1, then a bigger home run to put them in the lead!
@Mark Well said, my friend…
Looks like Tommy Hunter’s Momma has been on the micropoll.
It makes sense. . . he goes 7 complete the day after a doubleheader and two days after a starting pitching meltdown.
I can see Hunter or Andrus but voted for Hunter this time because the theme of this year has been pitching.
I doubt the players even find out if they won our little insignificant poll. The broadcast and FSW Twitter both pick one, too, so we could have up to 3 MVPs per game.
@Even: do you tell them?
