Rangers 3B Michael Young Hopes to Return from Injury Against Angels on September 18

ARLINGTON - Texas Rangers 3B Michael Young was told Wednesday afternoon that the hamstring strain he suffered on Tuesday night was slightly more than a Level 1 strain. He was then shown a needle the length of a ballpoint pen and given a rather painful injection.

All of this he welcomed as good news, bordering on great, because it means he still has a chance to impact the playoff race.

“On the way home last night, I was certain my season was over,” Young said. “When [team orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister] looked at me and kind of smiled after reading the MRI, I treated it as very good news. I could get upset about missing some time or I could visualize the impact I could have on the last two weeks of the season. As down as I was about it last night, what I was told today was very uplifting. It’s only going to give me more energy about being aggressive with my rehab.”

Doctors told him that the recovery period could take between two and three weeks. Young immediately consulted a Rangers schedule and saw that the mid-point of that recovery period just happens to coincide with the arrival of the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels in Arlington on Sept. 18. The teams play a three game series. Eight days later they play four games in Los Angeles. The Rangers also have a three-game series with Tampa Bay, currently third in the AL wild card race, Sept. 25-27. Young hopes to be available to play in all of those games.

The firs step to the recovery was the MRI, which revealed that muscle hadn’t completely torn and that there were no complications with the area of the hamstring where he suffered the strain. Then came an injection of blood platelets, a rather new treatment, that is designed to accelerate healing. Young will likely ice and stretch the hamstring through the weekend, then begin testing it by riding the stationary bike and getting on a treadmill.

In the meantime, the Rangers will have to figure out what to do about third base for two weeks. INF Omar Vizquel replaced Young there on Tuesday. 1B Chris Davis moved to third for Wednesday’s game with 1B Hank Blalock moving back into the starting lineup. SS Elvis Andrus moved up to the No. 2 spot in the lineup to replace Young.

Manager Ron Washington said Davis’ move was simply an emergency answer for Wednesday. He anticipates using a mix of Vizquel and INF Esteban German at third. Washington ruled out moving Blalock back across the infield to his original position.

“I’m not going to Chris back and forth,” Washington said. “It may happen again, but I’m not going to be moving him back and forth regularly. I’m not going to move Hank over there. He hasn’t been there in two years.”

Young will travel with the team to Baltimore and Cleveland for a road trip that start on Friday. The Rangers then play Seattle and Oakland at home from Sept. 11-16 before the Angels arrive. Young said he doesn’t anticipate having to be at 100 percent before returning, but also indicated he wants to make sure he can play the maximum number of games without further injury.

Young, who is hitting .322 with 22 homers has never been on the disabled list in his career. He has played 1,343 games since being called up for good on May 25, 2001. In that time only Ichiro Suzuki (1,352), Miguel Tejada (1,348) and Bobby Abreu (1,347) have played more games than Young.

Hello!!! Blalock played 3B earlier this year and handled it perfectly. He is still a better defensive 3B than Young. Played 31 games there last year.

I’d rather have Blalock than Vizquel and German any day. Not a popular opinion on this blog but Ranger fans have never been the smartest in the world.

If they could take their pick between David Murphy and Juan Gonzalez in his prime, they’d go with Murphy.

If we don’t make up at least two games over a stretch of BALTIMORE, CLEVELAND, SEATTLE, AND OAKLAND then we don’t freaking deserve to play LAA for a playoff spot.

@HH Mike Young should win the Gold Glove, and Hank Blalock is a butcher. You sir should be ashamed of yourself.

  • HH

Sorry, Pat. You don’t know what you are talking about. I watched Buddy Bell play 3B and Michael Young is no gold glover. He is not even average. He has gotten better, but Blalock is better than Young defensively. Neither is anything to write home about.

The most errors Blalock ever made in a season was 17. Not exactly a butcher.

I feel really bad for Michael Young. All those years with crappy teams and the Rangers are finally in the hunt and he gets hurt for the first time.

Championship teams find ways to overcome these type of problems. I’m not sure how the Rangers can do it (I’m guessing several combinations of players) but hopefully some guys step up in the next couple of weeks.

I’m not one to argue on message boards, but to think that Blalock is the answer at third is ridiculous. Omar did more than fine filling in at second for Ian. If this was more than a couple of weeks, I’d want a more permanent answer at third. But as is, Omar getting the bulk of the time at third is probably the best answer. Also, if you don’t appreciate Young’s defense at third this year, then you haven’t been watching.

  • HH

The trouble is that I have been watching. He has very little range which is also Blalock’s problem.

I hate to throw sabermetrics at Rangers fans. But sabermetrics do rate the Rangers as one of the best defensive teams in baseball. However, over his career Blalock has cost the Rangers roughly 3 runs per game per year versus the average 3B. Young is estimated to have cost the Rangers 6 runs this year.

Young and Blalock are similar defensive 3B but Blalock can drive in more runs than Vizquel or German and play probably play a better 3B than either. This is the time when you need to make smart decisions and it ain’t going with Vizquel and German.

That’s it, I’m done. Just trying to provide a K so someone can spell clue.

Blalock may be average at 3B, but Omar is still the better choice. He certainly loses nothing on the defensive side of the ball, but if you are going to talk about runs above replacement, Omar’s bat is 7 runs more than Hank’s this year, which more than makes up for your extra 3 runs a game on defense over MY.

  • HH

Hopefully it all works out. I’m crossing my fingers like anybody else. It’s a rock and a hard place.

  • Johnathan

I want Omar at 3B. He showed last night that he can play the position and even make big plays there. In the lineup he sees a lot of pitches, is willing and capable of advancing runners, and I think he’ll gather everything he’s got left to get the Rangers through the next few weeks.

    @HH

No, you haven’t been watching. Young has been better at 3B than anyone we’ve rolled out there the past three seasons, defensively and at the plate. Blalock hacks at anything near the strike zone and was an abomination at 1B in his time there this year. There’s reasons he’s not started at 3B even once this season.

  • CowdogHank

I gotta go against the crowd and go with HH on this one. Hank is due and he just might step up and go crazy in Sept like he did a couple of years ago. I still have faith in him. He could fill the void.

  • P1 Pierce

Blalock would be a good fit in the game, for another team. Time to move him and open up a spot for someone who can still make contact on a regular basis. Forget about his two good years here, it has been more bad than good recently

  • CowdogHank

Way too conservative for me. We aren’t in first place defending a lead. We’ve won all year with Hank. He got hot when he filled in for Davis. It could happen again. But Washington has made his decision. No point debating it.

  • P1 Pierce

well, we can all hope that Hank can learn to hit the ball again, maybe while at it he will learn how to play good defense instead of A ball defense.

  • P1 Pierce

really though, I have more faith in C.J., bases loaded and a 3-2 count, of getting out of the inning without giving up a run than I do in Blalock any more. He really looks spent, done, fini.

  • Hank Blalock

    Nobody loves me anymore.

  • Jesse Thomas

I still have love for Hank.

@HH The reason why Blalock is not at third has nothing to do with his glove or range. He can no longer make the throws across the diamond without injuring himself. This is common knowledge. If we ran him out there for the next 3 wks at 3B, he would have a DL stint and have made several short hopped throws.

  • HH

Actually, he can still make them. The Rangers are just worried that he can’t hold up for a full season and he might not be able to. He could make it a couple of weeks.
