From Assistant GM Thad Levine comes this report on Josh Hamilton’s back:
“Josh saw the doctor today regarding his lower back and it was determined he has a pinched nerve. He was given a ‘root nerve injection’ to reduce the inflammation. He is traveling with the club to Baltimore and athletic trainer Jamie Reed will examine him and evaluate him then. Hamilton is listed as day-to-day.”
Anti-inflammatory injections usually take about 24 to 48 hours to take effect, so it’s uncertain if Hamilton will be in the starting lineup on Friday against the Orioles or not.
Could have been a lot worse.Relieved to hear it’s a pinched nerve.
Actually, that is bad. Odds are that he has a disc herniation that is pinching the nerve. I wouldn’t expect him to be ready Friday.
I’m just assuming they would have found the herniation when they examined him.
Having gone through a disc herniation and eventually surgery, if he is just having back pain and not pain down the legs an injection and rehab might be able to do the trick. I’ve seen people who have gone this route and they end up being to play shortly after, however, I’ve also seen those who can’t. Just have to hope for the best.
I hope that Hamilton is ready for Friday, but I never like to hear athletes suffering back problems, I just remember how back issues derailed Don Mattingly’s career.

The dude is fragile.
am i alone on growing extremely tired of josh always being hurt? any time he slides or dives, you might as well count him out for some future games. between this and his display of no control this past offseason, i don’t see any reason to make a long-term commitment to this guy. very disapointing.
Josh needs to devote himself to a conditioning program that includes core strenghening and stablization, or he will completely break down in the near future. He was distracted by his newly found fame last winter and didn’t focus on what pays his check.
Josh will be fine but I agree that there is no way the Rangers can make a long term commitment to him right now.
