Story of the Game
At some point, RHP Scott Feldman is going to have to enter the Cy Young Award conversation, isn’t he?

In Baltimore, where he made his first start of the season, Feldman won his sixth consecutive decision Friday by allowing four hits in 6.2 innings. The only “downside” was that his scoreless innings streak was stopped at 17.2 by a sixth-inning run.

He did, however, add to his resume to be the Rangers Game 1 starter if the team makes the post-season and if they open on the road. Feldman has won six consecutive road decisions and is now 11-1 on the road this season. That ties the club record, set by Rick Helling, who did it on the way to 20 wins in 1998. Feldman, who is now the first Ranger to reach 15 wins since Kevin Millwood in 2006, should have three more road starts remaining this season and five more starts overall. If he wins them all the road starts he’d become the first pitcher in 25 years to have as many as 14 road wins. If he wins all five of his starts, he’d become only the fourth Ranger to ever win 20 games in a season.

Feldman is now using a very diversified repertoire to attack hitters. In the last two weeks, he’s shown a sharp curveball to go with his “cut” fastball, his solid changeup and his two-seam fastball. The results have been dramatic. In his last three starts, all of which have been on the road, Feldman has allowed just one run on 12 hits and eight walks in 19.1 innings.

Three Up
• The Rangers gained ground in the AL wild card race for the third consecutive day. They’ve shaved Boston’s lead from 4.5 games to two with 28 games remaining.
• Manager Ron Washington showed the Orioles he wouldn’t stand for any gamesmanship when he made Baltimore reliever Cla Meredith change gloves over an illegal color. The Orioles had tried that trick on RHP Scott Feldman earlier in the game.
• OF Marlon Byrd broke out of a 3-for-30 slump with a pair of hits while batting in the cleanup spot. Byrd has hit .294 in 32 games as the cleanup hitter this season.

Three Down
• The Rangers lost out on a chance to gain ground on the Angels, who rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to beat Kansas City. Former Ranger Jamey Wright, now with the Royals, and John Bale walked the bases loaded before Vladimir Guerrero singled home a pair of runs.
• OF Josh Hamilton did not fly to Baltimore on Friday due to a back that is still sore from a pinched nerve. Hamilton could fly out Saturday, but since game time is 3 pm CDT, a Sunday return is more likely. Hamilton has appeared in only 87 games this season.
• Don’t look now, but DH-OF Julio Borbon is becoming human. He was hitless in five at-bats Friday and has reached just eight times in his last 32 plate appearances (.250 OBP). Borbon is 5-for-29 (.172) in that span.

Stat o’ the Game
29-29: The Rangers record for games in which 3B Michael Young has not started since he made his first big league start for them on May 27, 2001. The Rangers are actually 4-1 without Young this season.

Player of the Game
Here are your candidates: SS Elvis Andrus (2-for-3, Walk); 1B Chris Davis (1-for-4, 2 RBIs); RHP Scott Feldman (6.2. IP, 4 H, 1 R, six straight road wins), RHP Neftali Feliz (2.1 IP, Save, 19.2 scoreless IP). Vote here.

Wednesday’s Player of the Game: Tommy Hunter (97% of the vote – we think someone stuffed the ballot box!)

    players of the game……rookie…..almost sophomore…….then a fifth year flounder…..and another rookie……….pretty amazing youth movement……

  • JustSaying

one down i AGAIN disagree with wash and his use of the bullpen…..this is the frickin orioles man so i would keep my powder dry and keep neftali sitting next to me until i’m in a one run game needing a strikeout…you really can’t say the plan is to run him out every fifth day for 2 innings?……so now he’s burnt up but otherwise you have everybody…..look at feldman’s career year to year stats…..what happened? what is the proper baseball explanation for scott feldman’s year?

  • Rockwall Tim

How long has it been since anyone, rookie OR vet, has had as dominating a 22 innings as Feliz? The numbers get sillier with every appearance…

  • Ranger Fan

In regards to last game’s player of the game: Tommy Hunter? Really…the guy gave up 4 runs against the Jays and that makes him player of the game? OK, sorry…carry on.

  • Buck

Definitely Feldman and he doesn’t need his Mother stuffing the ballot box to win, I bet.

Are the BoSox looking over their shoulder? They should!

  • Tom B

I’m not sure I am understanding Wash’s rational on using Feliz. Does he think The O’s are pushovers and The Rangers should sweep, no matter what? Did he think he wanted to bag #1 and let 2 & 3 take care of themselves? Did he stay late at Fell’s Point where I once counted 87 bars in a very small few block area? (I was doing statistical work and became one.) There used to be a place called “The Block” which would challenge anyones perception of reality. Maybe Wash was out turning over some old stones. I’m hangin’ w/Th Man…’til he messes up once more. This is Race Time…..Pennant Race Time.

  • S. Arcasm

The Angels beat KC while being outhit 11 to 3, thanks to KC walking 8. Still, it’s a trend over the Angels last several games they are definitely losing some steam, could make this even more interesting.

Congrats to Feldman and the team for getting to this point–being in the heat of a pennant race! I, too, don’t understand Wash and Maddox’s use of Feliz with a 4 run lead. There are plenty of bullpen arms up from OKC who could have come in to pitch the 8th & 9th. I guess the braintrust wanted to give Feliz some experience at closing, without the pressure of facing the tying or go-ahead runners just yet.

Do you think that Maddox will tinker with Feliz’s delivery over the winter? He seems to throw all with his arm, and not use his legs much. That arm will wear down real quick. Surely Nolan and Mike see this.

  • Mike Gray

Great win! I was thrilled to see Wash bring in Feliz. Now that he has the tools, Wash is showing that he is the manager we hoped he would be.

Evan — do yourself a favor and hire a proofreader. You leave out at least one word every time you make an entry.

I, for one, don’t have a problem with Wash’s handling of Feliz last night. You worry about the game in front of you, not what is going to happen the next day. What if the Rangers come out and score 8 in the first today and tomorrow and cruise to victory? Then Feliz probably doesn’t get used at all. He was going to be used last night, he hadn’t pitched since Tuesday.

  • mexi

I agree with the use of Feliz. At the point he was brought into the game, one bomb right there and it’s a 1-run game. (I think we all agree that was a good point to bring him in and don’t forget that is a little league park.) The Orioles record is a reflection of their pitching, NOT their hitting. They can still score runs and a 4-run cushion is nice but certainly not a given.

Maybe, we get someone else for the 9th but the only other 2 i want to see if either Franky or CJ (remember Grilli in NY). Forget the OKC bullpen arms. We saved both those guys and Neftali should be available Sunday. The every other day usage of him is absolutely perfect.

  • Joel

Wash’s use of Neftali just shows he doesn’t trust anyone in the bullpen but Feliz, CJ, and Francisco. He didn’t want to let a 5-1 get away so he used Feliz to shut them down the rest of the game.

  • mexi

Even if he only pitches to one batter, he is still not available tomorrow. The organization has already proven that. Why not put the game in the bag?

  • Joel

On a funny note, the camera showed Mad Dog briefly last night and my girlfriend asked who that was. I said its a young relief pitcher who has sucked in the majors. She asked me why is he there then, and I said they have extra roster spots and Mad Dog can come in when the game is a ten run advantage to either team.

I agree on the Feldman Cy Young conversation, but with that being said, if CC continues his momentum, it’s his to lose.

Feldy prolly has what, 4 or 5 starts left in him? If the voters look at his road record, he might have a shot. Beckett has fallen off, Grienke might have the ERA, but his wins and team aren’t helpin much, Halliday MIGHT be starting to regain his momentum, and Verlander is staying in it as well.

I’d like to see Feldy try and get his era in the mid 3′s, but it might take more than that….
