Rangers officials have confirmed the Chicago Cubs have claimed RHP Thomas Diamond, whom the Rangers designated for assignment earlier this week. Diamond, the Rangers top pick in 2004, was the last remaining member of the “DVD” trio of pitching prospects. He had never seemed to get back on track after Tommy John surgery in 2007.
Diamond turns 27 next April so he’s getting past the age of prospect status, but in going to Chicago, he will be reunited with his former University of New Orleans coach Randy Bush. Bush is now the Cubs assistant general manager and has followed Diamond’s pro career closely. The Rangers removed Diamond from the 40-man roster on Tuesday in order to make room for a couple of players purchased from the minors, C Kevin Richardson and OF Craig Gentry.
Diamond spent most of this season at Double-A Frisco, where he was pitching in relief after transitioning from being a starter.
And the last of DVD is gone…meh.
Guess they didn’t learn their lesson with Prior (or to a lesser degree Wood)…oh well, third time’s a charm!
Well, this should be a lesson that we can never get too overhyped on ANY prospect. You just never know what they are going to become.
I would have been surprised if nobody picked him up. Best of luck to him. His career is far from over.
And so the great DVD ends not with a bang, but with a wimper.
Evan,
I noticed that the Rangers added Craig Gentry, a supposedly stellar defensive outfielder, which, when combined with his incredible stolen base mark this season (49 in 55 attempts) screams “Toolsy,” to spend the final month of the season apparently as Texas’s fifth outfielder over “Toolsy” Greg Golson, also considered a stellar defender. The thing that really stood out about that decision was the fact that Golson was already on the 40-Man Roster, meaning he could have been added to the Major League Roster without requiring placing anyone on waivers. By adding Gentry, as this piece reports, the Rangers wound up losing Thomas Diaomond after designating him for assignment.
So can anything be inferred from these decisions regarding Golson’s future and abilities? Is it more telling about the lack of faith in Diamond’s potential to ever get back on track and carve out a productive career? Did Texas think Diamond was a good bet to get through waivers? Were there just too many pitchers already ahead of Diamond, and/or too many more who would have likely overtaken him? Or has Gentry really caught the eyes of many in the Rangers’ brass?
A few years ago if you’d told me that DVD would end this way I’d have been inconsolable. Fortunately, I have a few words that I say over and over to ease my pain: “Feliz, Holland, Feldman, Hunter, O’Day”….
I told you guys DVD’s would be obsolete in a few years.
This probably marks Diamond’s start to domination in Wrigley Field and coming Cy Young award with a WS match-up against Danks.
did we get anyone for Diamond, or did we just release him?
cub should have given us milton bradley for diamond…….
@JustSaying, How about a Milton Bardley board game of our choosing?
So if Danks Volquez and Duamond were DVD, are Holland, Feliz and Martin Perez Blue Ray?
