3:58: The home run pool remains open – briefly. Also, TV watching help: The first game is on FSN; the second on Channel 27 here in the DFW area.
4:08: Couple of earlier-in-the-day posts, I wanted to alert you to – if you are just now coming around. First, as kind of an epitaph on the “DVD” Era, we revisited the Rangers top picks from the 2002-05 draft and what they got from those picks compared to the rest of baseball. Also, it’s worth noting that despite getting very little, the Rangers were able to build baseball’s best farm system in just three years. And, I posted the first Rick Perry Republic of Texas Top 10 football poll. It’s not that much of a poll since right now I’m the only voter, but I did get at least one volunteer this afternoon. I’m always looking for more.
4:12: Josh, please, I beg you: We are headed for six plus hours of baseball, so please, please, please, slow down on the shtick.
4:28: David Murphy since August 26: Hitting .333 with three homers, counting the one he hit in the top of the second for the Rangers first run in 17 innings. He’s as hot as any guy on the team right now. Save for the possibility of the second game of the doubleheader, he should not sit for the forseeable future. The Rangers need their hottest bats in the lineup right now. It’s why you are going to see Ivan Rodriguez play more until a playoff spot is either clinched or lost. I’d suggest Murphy belongs in that mix, too, especially since he’s hitting .326 against lefties since the All-Star break.
4:33: Over the last 23 innings, the Rangers have scored five runs. Murphy has driven in three of them with homers.
4:54: Personnel note: The Rangers activated DH Andruw Jones from the DL today. He is expected to play in Game 2.
5:00: Pudge underscores the argument that he should play every day. Tom Grieve said, however, that he’s playing better than everybody expected. I’d have to disagree. I thought bringing Rodriguez back to the Rangers would really revitalize him. Not sure he could be a .300 hitter for a full year anymore, but for six weeks, with a chance to go to the playoffs with the Rangers, it’s helped to motivate him to get the most out of him.
5:05: By the way, I’ve been having a craving for some comfort food of my youth. Anybody know where to get this? If you’ve got a tip or if you are seeking some comfort food of your own, join the conversation.
5:48: Happy Hour has begun.
5:58: Definitely not a good development to have to go to the bullpen in the sixth inning in a game the Rangers led 4-0. Not a good development to have to use Neftali Feliz in a game the Rangers once led 4-0. And not a good sign when Feliz, who had permitted just one of 13 inherited runners to score this year, allows two in the sixth on a bloop hit.
6:11: Marlon Byrd gives the Rangers a gift with a three-run homer that gives them the lead again. Rangers can’t waste this one, the way they wasted his game-tying homer in the ninth in Tampa Bay. They need this game.
6:53: In case you were wondering, the new vacuum cleaner works very well, thank you. May have some issues emptying it, however.
6:57: Josh’s description of Shin-Soo Choo’s pursuit of Ivan Rodriguez’s two-run double in the ninth: “He looked like a moth going after that ball!” I’m chuckling, but I’m not sure why. What made him Moth-ish? Was he drawn to the light? Or was that an attempt to describe the circuitous route that Choo took on the way to the ball that fell just inside the foul line in right?
7:15: Should be starting Game 2 around 7:30-7:40. In the meantime, you can follow the Red Sox-Orioles here. Or, given the score, maybe not.
7:48: Speaking of non-sequitirs, who is this new woman on the Sonic commercials. She’s no Molly, I’ll say that. And the Howie Long commercial? OK, I get it “man-steps”=uncool. Please no more Howie tonight. Or that Sonic tart. Ever. Bring back Molly.
8:21: Rangers are swinging it pretty good today. Maybe they’ve adjusted to lack of Young/Hamilton in lineup. Marlon Byrd’s first-game homer was a real jump-starter I believe. With Young on the bench, this team will take its cues from Byrd for the time being.
8:23: Question for the masses: Brandon McCarthy was very effective in his first outing of September. Let’s assume he puts together a dominant month. Goes 3-0 or 4-0 and the Rangers win all his starts. Let’s say that partly on the strength of that solid September, they reach the playoffs. How does your evaluation of the Danks-McCarthy trade change at that point? Or does it? Would one really crucial month outweigh two seasons of injury/ineffectiveness when even a healthy/effecetive McCarthy wouldn’t have made the Rangers a playoff team?
9:14: Brandon McCarthy has allowed a pair of hits and a run through five innings. Presuming a win tonight, he will have a four-game winning streak, dating back to mid-May. In those five starts (he had a no decision), he’s got (at this very moment) a 2.67 ERA.
9:18: Marlon Byrd has seven hits tonight. He has raised his batting average 11 points. In a single day. In September. And we’re not talking about a guy with not many at-bats; we’re talking about guy who already has more than 500 plate appearances.
9:48: This game has gotten serious again, but before you all go back to sitting on your various pins and your needles, know that, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, Marlon Byrd’s seven hits today are the most by a Ranger in one-day. The single-game record is held by Alfonso Soriano and Ian Kinsler with six. The doubleheader record was six by David Murphy in the record-breaking doubleheader sweep of Baltimore in 2007.
10:27: Huge home run by Chris Davis with two outs in the ninth to make the score 10-5.
Hey, Evan! Let’s win two!
Hey Evan!! One good thing about being unemployed – I can watch this DH from home while drinking beer!
Hey guys…let’s play 2!
I think it’s a bad sign when the umps voice echoes in the stadium.
How many po’s against kinsler this yr?
Ouch on that CS…
I think 3…and they’ve all come in the alst week.
Kinsler is the worst base runner on the team
@evan – Ticket Fight Night, next year, you vs. Josh?
What say you?
why would they schedule a DH today when both clubs are off on Thursday?
That’s why he leads the team in steals…
Its sad cause i think ian has all the tools to be a top 5 player in the league, he’s just missing something menally
Anybody see Neyer’s blog about AL ROY? He says he’d vote for Andrus – nice to see Tiny E finally getting the national pub he deserves.
Because they didn’t want to give up an off day, neither pitcher warmed up yesterday so the pitchers could pitch today, the rosters are expanded so both teams have plenty of players.
I’d think they’d rather give up an off day than play 3 games in 20 hours
@alan in SA: Kinsler is 28-for-33 (84.8 percent) on steal attempts, counting that that first inning as a caught stealing. Factor in the one official time he’s been picked off, he’s at 82.3 percent, which ranks 13th in baseball (and that’s not factoring in other players times picked off). It would rank just ahead of Carl Crawford. I don’t think there is anybody who evaluates this team professionally who would call Kinsler anything less than a “plus” baserunner.
Did you miss his mentally awesome play last weekend? Every single player makes mistakes. A lot of them. There’s 162 games.
@alan: obviously not.
@alan in SA: Trust me, in September, teams would much rather play two than give up an off day. The Rangers are looking at playing 17 games in a row to finish the season; they want every day of rest that they can get at this point.
That looked like a balk…
can’t see it, but the HR sounded pretty
Looks to be about 150 people in the stands for the early game.
@ RF – I agree.. it’s like there is a hesitation in his stretch delivery that should be a balk but instead is contributing to the pickoffs.
Well that’s unfortunate…would have liked the extra run.
4:28: David Murphy since August 26: Hitting .333 with three homers.
I didn’t think he looked like he was going that time..Looked to me like he went to sleep..I’m aware of his stealing success but he seems to make a lot of bad decisions on the bases..maybe it’s because he’s just being aggressive but it’s frustrating when the team is scoring no runs
Do you think Wash will stop sitting Murphy now?
@evan – can you put a note into the team to guage how ticket sales look for the 9 game series coming up? Curious as to what kind of success at the gate the team’s success on the field is having and whether people will wake up and realize we are in the middle of something big.
Isn’t there a rule about the number of consecutive days team may play without approval from the Players’ Association? They may not have been able to play on Thursday.
How many mistakes can you make when you have that high success rate? He goes 1st to 3rd well and scores easily from 2nd on singles. Streches doubles and triples…what mistakes save the 5 times caught stealing have you seen? And is Byrd mentally deficient as well?
He has a tendancy to lose focus imo
WizN – the fact that Byrd got nailed 2 batters later makes me think that perhaps the pitcher has a terrific, or at the very least, unique, pickoff move.
OK, how? With what? It was obvious he was going as soon as the pitcher started to the plate. He had a huge lead. Unfortunately the pitcher went to 1st. It happens. It doesn’t mean he lacking in the mental area of the game.
I think Ian’s baserunning is very good. No one is perfect, but Kins does a darn good job. And “losing focus” hasn’t been near the problem this year (especially in the field) than it has been in years past. Let’s not nitpick too much.
@Jack: or maybe a balk…at least the 2nd one looked to be.
ok – that was the worst homerun call by Barnett, EVER. I like Barnett as a person and as a TV announcer (particularly, football). And I don’t like to be mean spirited, I reall don’t (there is no point). But man, not good.
Love the power…I think he’s gonna be good.
ok – i totally and completely agree with Evan that we can’t afford to sit Murphy right now (thought it was crazy on Sunday). But Borbon just homered. So, who sits game 2 to get Andruw Jones bloated corpse into the lineup? Cruz, our biggest power threat?
@Jack Daddy: What did he say?
Is the pitcher a lefty in game 2?
So much for lefty vs. lefty matchups. . . Borbon and Murphy! Now if we could just get baserunners in front of these knocks.
@James: The Rangers would not have been in violation of the 20-day rule. They have an off day on the 17th, which is their last off day of the season.
@alan in SA: Kinsler does have some mental lapses, won’t argue that. But as Rangers Fan mentioned, every player does that. Guys getting thrown out on the bases tend to stand out more than other mistakes. But Kinsler has been exceptionally well focused defensively. His defensive consistency this year has, quite frankly, been unfairly overlooked. I understand your frustration. Think every Ranger fan right now is experiencing a combination of excitement, frustration and anxiety. But overall, Kinsler’s running game is as sound as anybody on the team.
ho hum line drive, that all of a sudden became homerun. to top it off, he said (paraphrasing) “there is linedrive hit hard to right, Choo back, to track, the wall, over Choo’s head. LONG pause. long pause. 2-0 rangers”.
Over his head and off wall? over his head and ground rule double? Over his head and WHAT?
Regarding Kinsler. . . he’s a great baserunner. His percentage is high, but he’s got to pick his spots a little better than a blazing fast guy like Borbon.
I just hope he doesn’t zero in on the 30/30 mark and sacrifice his effectiveness for individual stats down the stretch.
I like seeing him batting in “RBI producing” slots. . . 3, 5, or 6.
@ B. Money – Carrasco is a righty…
@ Ranger Fan – The pitcher for Game 2 is Laffey, a lefty, so Borbon will obviously sit since Wash is convinced he’s allergic to lefty pitchers.
ok, I surrender…I’m a dumbass..somebody send me an application for the Kinsler fan club
Glad to see the road-grays today. Was starting to wonder if they were going exclusively alt-BLUE for the rest of the season.
Kins’ D has definitely been overlooked.
Kins also has constant, perpertual, tired and A-whipped look to his face these days. Sort of the same look that I have all the time. Then I remember that he has a young child now (I believe less than 15 months old). Explains A LOT!
Big Game Hunter with only 32 pitches through 3 innings. Looking good for saving the bullpen until game 2 if he keeps this up.
I’m with ya, JackDaddy — something about the combination of Barnett’s delivery and the pace at which baseball is played is, well, reminiscent of golf coverage.
But hey — it’s the day after a holiday and I have something to get me through my work afternoon! Not complaining!
@Clint: lol. I even have the TV on, but I’m working on my PC, so I’m mostly listening and turning around for significant replays. Have the DVR running for a closer inspection later on. I’m usually behind live so never join in on the D-Mag conversation.
@ Alan in SA – LOL. Just be his friend on facebook this year. You can apply for the fan club next year.
Let’s see if the Rangers 3rd base-runner is picked off.
Nevermind, good hit Byrd, oh wait, he was held at 3rd.
@alan in SA: OK, Kinsler nearly ran through a stop sign, so maybe today is one of those “distraction” days.
im right there with you alan, nobody makes me shake my head more on this team than kinsler, mostly because i know how talented he is.
My other mistake was not realizin that Kinsler took an infant on road trips with the team..no wonder he makes mental mistakes with no sleep…he’ll probably be in the hospital after playing late tonight and at 11 in the morning..Maybe in his next contract he can negotiate baby sitting
i think cruz is making the decision on who sits for Jones easy in the 2nd game (though I’m sure Borbon will still be sat by Wash).
@Jack Daddy: If I was having the kind of season he’s having and still took the flack he gets, I’d be whipped too. (OK-stepping off my Kinsler soap box). But yes, I think his daughter is under a year. I think I remember hearing him talking about her being born right after the season last year.
@alan – I’m sure kid isn’t on road trip!
but when you have a kid, they ALWAYS stress you out, even when back home!
THIS is what we needed, especially in the first game.
Gotta love how this one is starting!!! And since Millwood isn’t no the mound, we oughta be able to hold onto it…
But seriously, this team is back to doing just what it needs. How ’bout 3 W’s in 24 hours? Cuz thats what they need now after Bal.
@Evan / Alan in SA:
Remember when Ricky Henderson was going for the all-time record for runs scored? He selfishly blew through a few stop signs at 3B as he neared the record. He was thrown out at the plate and booed by the home fans a couple of times. I’m trying not o be pessimistic, but that’s the feeling I’ve gotten a couple of times recently when Ian was caught stealing.
GREAT 2-out hit by Pudge! Great hustle by Murphy!
Gotta love how this one is starting!!! And since Millwood isn’t on the mound, we oughta be able to hold onto it…

this entire 4th inning rally all because Kinsler, (playing on no sleep)very intelligently, reversed his decision to run through the stop sign at 3rd..GREAT playing…@Callie..I’m VERY disappointed that the fan club is closed this year
@All – I am just happy that this Kins discussion is the worst thing we can complain about so far… KOW.
@callie: I think it’s sad that so many people think they should be getting more from the person that’s leading the team in rbi, steals, Homeruns (or he may be down 1 now), runs score and walks. Such a disappointment.
5:00: Pudge underscores the argument that he should play every day. Tom Grieve said, however, that he’s playing better than everybody expected. I’d have to disagree. @B Money—I’ve already apologized for being an idiot but I had COMPLETELY overlooked the Kinsler/Ricky Henderson comparison..thanks for pointing that out
Tommys stuff is sick today
@ RF – I agree but I’m truly a Kins homer so I try to stay out of the discussion mostly.. except to insert random sarcasm..:)
The thing I find annoying about Wash and Borbon is this: we didn’t hear much if anything (my faulty memory maybe) about Borbon having throwing problems until he got up to the big club and Wash needed a reason to sit him more?
So whats the real truth? is he capable of being our center field as soon as next year, or two at the outside? or is his throwing such a problem that you sacrifice his exciting offensive contributions?
5:05: By the way, I’ve been having a craving for some comfort food of my youth. Anybody know where to get this? If you’ve got a tip or if you are seeking some comfort food of your own, join the conversation.

Did Josh Lewin just call Tommy a puppy?
I’m diggin the pace of this game… and yeah, I probably just jinxed it.
If I had to guess, RangerFan, Kins gets bagged on because he looks so beaten pretty much all the time these days (as has been noted). He used to play with at least a smile now and again, on through outright glee on occasion.
Ian is not helping me today…
Rangers Fan:
I wonder if some of the frustration in Kinsler is misdirected frustration with Washington insisting on playing him in the leadoff spot.
As Kinsler develops, he has become a classic 3-5 hitter with above average speed for those slots. If he stayed there in the lineup, he could run at Juan Gonzalez’s RBI numbers. Leadoff homeruns are nice, but they’re often an RBI opportunity missed.
If Kinsler had been hitting 5 or 6 during his slump(s), he’s still be viewed as an overachiever. During his hot streks, he could hold 3-4 fine.
Just thinking out loud. . . I’m definintely grateful for his contributions this year.
How about Tommy Hunter?!
@Juboon: He’s been getting baagged on since April. I for one, think he’s battling through the hamstring issue and there’s a lot of pressure on him to be the leader. He hasn’t really been that, always playing with Young on the field. It’s an adjustment. Not to mention, they’ve never played in a penant race so the game faces are on all of them, except Elvis. He always smiles.
@BMoney—did you seriously suggest that Kinsler could drive in 150+? I’ll bet a year’s pay that NEVER happens
I love Kinsler, and yes, he needs to get out of the leadoff spot. And possibly do some endurance work in the off season. That and perhaps a few more off days next year mixed in by Wash to keep him and others fresh. Couldn’t hurt to let the very capable Omar play a couple more games at 2nd this year either.
@B. Money: I think there’s a lot to be said to that point. Ian’s even said, with Borbon he’s happy to play down. If he’d been playing 3-6 all year, he’d have a 100 rbi. In my opinion, Kins and Hamilton are the most complete players on the team.
I want a Ranger to break Hack Wilson’s record. I’ve wanted it since I was a kid rooting for Gonzo.
With high OBP guys in front of Kinsler (Borbon? Andrus?). . . if he keeps driving the gaps and not swinging exclusively for the fences, he’s the guy on this team that could do it. Doubles and HRs with speedy baserunners is the formula. He needs to raise the AVG some, but he’ll improve if he remains teachable.
hard to drive in runs with pop outs
Kevin Elster did it. lol
I hope Cruz drives a ball out of the stadium here…
Thank you, Eric Nadel, for allowing the pitch of your voice to key me into when I need to pay closer attention…
Please allow me to second the call for more Omar. I have become a HUGE fan.
Cruz will make them pay
That was his pitch!
How are Kam Loe and Jason Botts doing these days… anyone know?
I’m not gonna say Kinsler’s a sure 150 rbi guy…but I do think he’s the most complete player here.
That commercial made me want to autotune the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBb4cjjj1gI
Nice defense by Andrus and Davis there. . .
Here comes Tommy’s bad inning…
@ B. Money…what?
Defense or Autotune?
Autotune = hilarious
Defense…were you talking about the tag? If so…I have a huge delay I was unaware of!
Yeah. . . Andrus going into the hole to nab it, going across his body to throw. . . Davis coming off the bag and making the tag. They had to get an out there.
I’m watching it on Verizon FIOS in Keller. If you have satellite then you’re probably delayed.
@B. Money: I agree. Just saw that before the actual play!
Supper time – talk to ya’ll later.
the radio boys on my ride home said that the indians either finally figured out how to beat hunter or are stealing the signs. how often do signs really get stolen? i’m guessing it’s much more that they just figured him out.
5:48: Happy Hour has begun.
Hunter needs to step up…his pitch count is down so if he can get some control back he can do the pen a huge favor.
Hope this is the right move.
Well, he didn’t do them any favors. Not good. He had the chance to get through 8 today…let it slip.
Ok – everyone can taunt me later, but I’m not sure I agree here.
And everyone can be mad at me, but I’m not convinced that some of our struggles lately don’t have something to do with the pitch selection by our newly acquired catcher. Ok, let the wrath begin.
@Callie: Well, Tommy lost it. I’m disappointed Tommy squandered his efficiency today.
Is Jack Daddy lurking here? I have a question.
BRING THE HEAT! Sheesh…I love the secondary stuff but Pudge has been calling soft stuff with Feliz and CJ a lot recently. I think that will backfire.
@Callie: Clearly took the words right out of my mouth! I’m not impressed with pitch selection from either catcher at this point. I think we might have undervalued that part of Salty’s improvement.
I would have kept Hunter in the game.
oh pooh.
@RF – agreed – definitely not trying to say TT is a better option, but do think that you should play to a pitchers strengths instead of trying to “trick” batters.
I also wished the Rangers would have done something when they had the bases loaded…
Why does it look to me like Cruz is just not there defensively so often? There are so many plays that I see Hamilton or Byrd making on a ball, that Cruz is just meandering towards?
@RAT – agreed. leaving em loaded not helpful. Games like this really annoy me because I feel this team is underperforming (read:slacking).
in my completely unknowledgeable and pretend smart-guy opinion, i’d guess that maybe he still doesn’t trust his ankle while he’s out in the field. but for real, i have no idea why cruz seems slow to the ball.
@Callie: Pudge is definitely one of the greatest of all time. I’m not trying to overlook what he’s done or say TT should be playing either. I just think his calls have been odd. Worked well with Feldman. TT didn’t work well with Holland Sunday. But I’ve noticed the most difference with CJ and Neftali.
well, in semi-good news, the indians are going to their bullpen early too. i might have missed some, but isn’t this the 3rd indian pitcher?
Need to shift the momentum back here – really important for the whole DH…
@RF – 100% agree
Does the drum guy only make noise while the home team bats?
I’m calling a gidp by Byrd!
Can he steal home?
I think the pitchers grunting drowns out the drum
If we can score Kinsler, Feliz will have the longest scoreless innings streak…
Nice!!!!!
and there’s your momentum shift!
If we score…deflating if we done.
Well about that delay I was talking about…
Looks like Perez just woke up…
where’s the ball?
@evan: what is the explanation on that one? If it was a foul ball, he shouldn’t be out. If it was a swing and miss, he should be able to run to first. If he hit the catcher, it is catcher’s interference.
What in the world was that…why is that strike 3?
if we go on and win, this will be the first big league win for Feliz.
I think I’m going to add that to every sentence… “unless he’s playing in holland and wearing wooden shoes”.. LOL
Well at least O’Day, CJ and FF are well rested…
OH MY! What a play by Andrus and CD. He has gold glove capability at 1st. On a limb…Hank doesn’t make that one.
@RangerFan: not much of a limb!
What pitch did he hit? If it was something soft I’m gonna go bananas.
Bananas!
@scooper: Well you know…I want to play it conservative. I’ve already gone homer on Kinsler today…
@Ranger Fan: Gameday says it was an 89 mph four-seam fastball. Me thinks that was a changeup.
What’s that Josh is saying about Davis was going to go to Arkansas? I thought he had committed to UT. I thought they said earlier in the year that he and Teagarden would have been teammates.
O’s getting lit up – as predicted…
Thanks Evam! I’ll save the rant…but I’ll say this. MAKE THEM BEAT YOUR BEST! I lvoe his secondary stuff…but it was already proven his curve/changeup wasn’t spot on. He went with the hard stuff and got results…ugh
Cool story about Davis and the pitcher…and the pitcher wanting to be Pudge. Nw get a hit crush!
@Evan: Is German expected to play game 2? That doesn’t excite me…
@scooper: Davis actually went to Texas,I believe for a semester, but didn’t do well and transferred to Navarro JC. I think that’s correct.
@Ranger Fan: Yes, German will likely play 3B in the second game. You don’t expect Omar to play 18 innings today, do you?
What…does Josh just make up these stories??
@Evan: No…of course not! Just wish we had better options.
@Ranger Fan: Not with Michael Young on the shelf. It’s German and German only.
at least it’s not blalock.
Update – have now moved from “drinking beer” to “nervously throwing em back” in an attempt to stay calm.
Does any pitcher get beaten more with stupid groundballs?
Are we seeing Good CJ or Bad CJ tonight?
upon callie’s beers, i hope it’s good c.j. tonight.
14 hits in a must-win game against these dogs is not postseason material, win or lose.
Gotta be impressed with these young indian hitters
whew.
WHEW!!! Way to go CJ….
@ becca – truly +1 – if I’m not careful I’ll be agreeing to date Evan before the 2nd game is over… Come on Rangers!!
Will the BP open up another can of pitchers. This one had defects.
That was a sick pitch….
Evan – kidding – I’m sure you are great.
Just call him “Power” Burbon from now on
Well hot dang! How do you keep him out of Game 2?
Well since I get chastised for complaining about CJ, I’ll try a different tact.
It’s such a joy watching CJ.
I like the way that he lets the other team feel productive by letting two or three guys on base. It’s very kind of him to help their morale.
I also like the way he lets the other guys score, making for a much more competitive game.
Who needs a decisive win anyway?
This game is about sportsmanship and CJ cares about the feeling of other team!
Way to go CJ!
There’s no way you keep him and Murphy out of Game 2. Does Cruz sit? Im sure not but he should. Actually…I’d just prefer Jones not play but I digress…
What did this guy do in Cleveland last night?
He must have met some of his Homies and slammed a few back.
Somebody check Julio’s bat for cork!!!
@ Phil – awesome.
@Phil: How did you feel about Feliz’ appearance today?
Only Ron Washington sits a guy with 2 HRs in the first game of a DH
@Evan, I detect a certain act of Buttering you up by one Callie. Run, Evan, Run.
Chris Davis -
Now in a 1 for 18 (.056) streak.
12 for 49 with two walks since coming back from OKC (.245 average / .269 obp).
Going back to before he was sent down, is in a 16 for 77 (.208)
Love those isolated small sample sizes.
does jones really have to play tonight? maybe the old guy needs another night off.
or week.
@Tom B – Ha. Wait – not sure that’s funny.
Two runs is better than a sharp stick in the eye.
Whats the alternative to Davis?
@Callie, If you saw Evan run you would know it’s funny that is.
@Tom B: It’s the women who are regularly running away from me. I think Callie is fairly new here. We’ll try to not chase her away – right away.
evan, i have some laundry that needs to be done if you get bored after vacuuming.
I don’t know why Davis stats pre AAA are even dicuseed. They have no relevance at this point.
@ Becca, Cynicism welcome. We need more of that on here.
It is WAY too early to be celebrating a Rangers Victory. there’s still FF.
Or was that an attempt to describe the circuitous route that Choo took on the way to the ball that fell just inside the foul line in right?
so up by 4 do you save Frankie for the second game?
Davis pre AAA stats are discussed because that’s what he is slowly regressing towards.
Make it 1 for 19, 12 for 50, 16 for 78.
@Becca: Are you trying to domesticate me? There is plenty of laundry still to be done here! And dishes to wash.
@ Evan/Tom B – hmmm, not sure a good response to either of your posts so I’ll just say hello, beer is good , and Go Rangers!
One more run and Eddie gets to finish. He has to be in early.
There was a reason he went to AAA. To change his swing and improve. He’s done that. I think those who watch him regularly pre and post AAA can see that. Regardless of this mini-slump he’s maintained solid contact and had some pretty large hits, not to mention his stellar D.
@Callie: We’re just happy to have you.
PS – just to send 90% of you into an anti-Callie rant (since I’m new) – Go Packers!
i worry that bringing in frankie frank isn’t super smart. but that’s why i’m in shorts and a tshirt on my recliner in the living room and not sitting next to maddux.
@ Callie, You’re among Friends. We are all Quackers here….No, wait, Quakers.
I had a bad feeling about this from the get go…
Hi folks! Ready to win two today?
I remember back in the day Cito Gaston would never get Tom Henke up in the bullpen and then not use him, wonder if Wash feels the same way about Frankie.
crap crap crap.
DANG!!!!!
If Frankie can get us home Grilli, O’Day and Eddie make up what’s left out there.
Whatever his motivation, I hate to see a closer in a “low pressure” game, it rarely goes well…
Can we quit this jacking around and close this sucker out?
Very kind of FF to follow along.
Yikes.
is moscosco available? or mathis? not that you’d bring them in now. just thinking about the inevitbale run at the bullpen next game. of course i hope i’m wrong wrong wrong.
Leakin’ oil kids. MY hurt, Josh hurt, Millwood ineffective, Pen is starting to show signs of wear.
Yes Becca both are.
phil gave me chuckles.
and mathis, moscoso, strop, madrigal.
What a catch by Kinsler!
Nippert would also be available for Game 2. And while I was typing that, woo-hoo!
Wow….Frankie…12 of 13 for stikes.
win for feliz, then?
Never a doubt.
Yup, Happy Hour turned into Vulture Hour
nippert pitched on Sunday. How many pitches did he throw? He might not be available today.
Thank You, Callie. They needed the stern warning.
At this point in the season….a win is a win. Let’s take ‘em all ugly or not.
NP – that’s why I’m here. Well that and apparently to Butter Up Evan.
i am perfectcly happy with this win. stupid girl question: do they change uniforms inbetween the doubleheader or is it just hurry up and get back out there, smelly and everything.
Decision Time:
I’ll be ordering a new player-t (want a royal blue one) Which player should I get?
Davis
Borbon
Holland
@RF – what are the players’ numbers?
@ becca – pretty sure they change unis…
Davis: 19
Holland: 45
Borbon: 29
@Callie:
Davis is 19
Borbon is 29
Holland is 45
@becca: They change unis. And, no, I’m not doing their laundry either.
go julio. i am a fan of ranger julios.
@Whoever Asked – Bottsy had a kid, Lincoln back at the end of August.
Got to come back from Japan for it, then went back.
As far as stats… no clue.
Ok, I’m going to go with 45 – I am anti -”9″ so thseo numbers wont work. Wait, 4+5=9… Crap. Well, still going with Holland.
Anti-9?
How can someone be anti-9?
i hope all they folks wanting to watch 8 rerums of cops on my27 aren’t too upset with the baseball game that’s going to be on.
@evan:
Why is Game 2 not in HD?
Not a fan of 99 cent items (just make it a dollar), 9th place (bad middle school memories), and gas that cost 2.399. I mean really, can’t we just call it $2.40? Seriously. Plus this chick in high school kicked my a$$ in basketball was #99… My hatred is deep-seeded…
@Callie: You drink and love the Rangers. Are you hot????
I just want to weigh in again and report how happy I am to have been baptized in the blood of this blog…So glad that Kinsler had such a huge role in winning it
Now if Andruw Jones can re-awaken Evan’s lust for him in the second game,(remember that when before Jones went on the DL, we NEVER had to hear about Evan’s need for a vacuum cleaner or his laundry issues) I’ll be totally committed
AJ in the lineup someone shoot me please.
@ MWNHY – Really – you can’t ask someone if she’s hot. There’s no right answer. If she says yes, she’s conceited. If she says no, she’s hideous. It’s a no-win.
Let’s WIN two…
@alan in SA: Hey, sometimes a man has gotta do what a man has gotta do. Today, it just so happened to be vacuuming.
Update: Bos 8 – Bal 0
/jeff
Yes Evan I agree, let the Murphinator do his thing!
@callie – “my husband/boyfriend/signifigant other thinks so” would have worked… wait, just looked who asked, so perhaps not.
Evan..I think you missed my point..when your love affair with Andruw was alive, you vacuumed without commenting on it…since he’s been on the DL, you don’t seem yourself..but he’s back now so I’m sure you’re happy and content (and have a very clean house)
… I’m still missing the point?
Andruw inspires Evan to clean?
Oh vomit…Jones batting cleanup.
@evan – still upset my laundry isn’t one of the things that is included in your ‘guy has to do’ list. and if alan’s point is valid, i will be upset with andruw jones for it too.
@Alan: Wait, you mean you don’t want to know about my vacuuming? Oh, this changes everything…. Wait, here’s A. Jones, I gotta run.
@ Romo – true true. Go rangers.
@ Evan – girls love a man who knows his way around a vaccuum. Don’t let them harass you.
I really miss Vince Cotroneo on the radio. And I know he was generally disliked inside the organization, but I miss Victor as well.
Barnett just doesn’t have the same analytical talent those guys have. Poor Eric is having to do play by play and then give me some analysis as well. Not working for me.
does anyone have a clue what channel the second game is on on Direct TV?
And an instant DP. Love me some AJ! (fine…not smart by Elv but still)
AJ = 0-4 = rally killer
7:48: Speaking of non-sequitirs, who is this new woman on the Sonic commercials. She’s no Molly, I’ll say that. And the Howie Long commercial? OK, I get it “man-steps”=uncool. Please no more Howie tonight. Or that Sonic tart. Ever. Bring back Molly.
ugh, i need my rangers baseball in hd
If we lose this game and Jones does nothing…I predict it will be the worst of the Wash bashing we’ve seen.
AJ = experiment failed
@alan: Can’t help you on the TV issue, it’s on My 27 here in DFW. Not sure who carries over the air broadcasts in your neck of woods.
AJ = laundry still not done
@All: I think this is how it works: Return of Andruw inspires me to clean; inspires the rest of you to want to clean house. of Andruw.
@Alan: I’m trying to get an answer for you on HD in San Antonio. But no luck yet.
@Callie: “girls love a man who knows his way around a vaccuum”
And guys love girls that can create a vacuum…
I’m hopeful stringbean McCarthy can take us through 6 tonight…
I swear, a girl clicks onto a blog, and 93% of people suddenly turn into jort-wearing construction workers.
@everyone— the game is on 680 on Direct TV
@Evan–It certainly took you long enough to comment that the Sonic chick is not as hot as Molly–My thinking is that you’re meeting her ran her off and we got the newer, uglier actress…thanks a lot (probably because of your love affair with Andruw; you didn’t even know him last year when Molly was around)
@Evan: How much leash does AJ get? If he proves that he has nothing yet again…does he ride the bench the rest of the way?
BTW, I got distracted, but my intended comment:
“I know my way around a vacuum… I go right past it every time I go into the hall closet, and hardly ever make contact”
Watching this on 27 on Uverse. Is this game being broadcasted from 1985? Why are all the games not delivered in HD?
@last: you are right. some guys just have no class.
@ Romo – I truly LOL’d with your “jort” comment. I despise jorts. I mean really – no man ever looks good in jorts. Ever.
@Ranger Fan: He’ll get some chance to DH against lefties. I think this is what the Rangers decision comes down to vs. lefties:
Option 1: Play Jones at DH, Pudge at catcher
Option 2: Play Pudge at DH, Teagarden catches
Which makes you more comfortable?
@Callie: Like I said, we’re just happy to have you. This is apparently our crowd’s way of flirting. Take it as a compliment.
@Alan in SA: I’ll have you know Molly shot new Sonic commercials recently. And she may be poppin’ up fresh somewhere else. And she had a three-word role in “The Goods.”
@becca–you missed your chance–when Andruw was on DL, Evan was forlorn and had time to do your laundry (he did mine)….but now that AJ is back, the love affair resumes and you’ll never get his attention again
German could do a lot to make up for my seething hatred for that misplay in Baltimore over the weekend with a hit here…
@ Evan – Option 1 is fine. Whatever. It’s like the Rangers have this one year Milton Bradley – Andruw Jones type of reclaimation project every year. I’ve resigned myself to it.
@Evan: DH Borbon and Catch Pudge
Borbon’s AAA splits are not drastic. At least we should see Borbon won’t work because know Jones won’t.
OK, ALL might not be forgiven, but it’s a start.
@Evan – she is going to be horrible in the role of Poppin’ Fresh!
@Callie – I’m in FL. It’s how we identify Gator Fans.
PS – You know LSU fans by the scent of corndogs.
i never had good timing.
Maybe we should just play doubleheaders the rest of the year, there seems to be a lot more energy to the team in them.
To josh: I believe that they are called “shin guards”.
Option 2
@ Evan – I feel right at home here. Don’t worry about me…
Way to execute, Elvis!
@ Romo – uh oh – I’m from the SEC too – how do you identify Tennessee fans?
My apologies…
This hurts the eyes trying to watch on HD channel.
Any Austinites know if the 2nd game is being broadcast here? The usual equivalent of Dallas’ Channel 27 isn’t carrying it (TWC ch. 77 and 288).
@ Johna, It is on Channel 27.
Well, UT fans used to always have a box of donuts as an offering to the coach, now… I guess … hmm… now…. Tennessee Fans are the people who run around yelling “j’accuse” at everyone.
@Ranger Fan: Ron Washington has demonstrated he doesn’t have confidence in Julio Borbon to face lefties. If the second game lineup doesn’t underscore that – no Borbon despite a pair of homers in the first game – I don’t know what does. Not sure whether Washington is right or wrong on this, but I do know he’s demonstrated where he stands on Borbon vs. lefties.
Elvis Andrus is pretty durn good. If fielding is as important as we writers say it is, Andrus should win Rookie of the Year.
@ Evan: Why all the hate on Josh Lewin today?
I think he’s absolutely fabulous, and am worried that since his contract is over at the end of the year and Hicks can’t afford baseballs, that we might be seeing the last month of the great Josh Lewin….it will be an absolute disaster if they bring over the TERRIBLE Dave Barnett from Radio (where he sucks) to TV.
Of course this is my opinion, and maybe its just b/c of how great Eric Nadel is on radio, but everytime I hear Barnett’s voice (and less than stellar call of the game) I find myself yearning for Nadel again.
Again Evan….why the hate for Little Lewin?
@Tom B: Ch. 27 in Austin? On Time Warner Cable?
Oy, more “man-stepping.”
@Callie: Re: Identifying UT fans: You mean the constant humming of Rocky Top doesn’t give you away.
Evan – what’s your obsession with the Sonic ladies about? I’m new here remember?
@Jason O: What bothers me regarding Lewin is that too often it’s mostly shtick. He’s got great information, but sometimes it gets so buried in joking around that I’ve tuned out. And sometimes he does so much research, he crams too much down your throat. If he’d just let the game come to him a little, I think he could be great. No hate, just sometimes frustrated.
She could have been the RotoRooter girl and Evan would have extolled her virtues.
The Sonic commercials here in PA have a couple of doofusy guys in the drive-through. I feel like I’m missing something.
@Callie: Molly Erdman, the original Sonic wife, is from Dallas. I have a crush on her. We’ve hung out, talked, etc. I’m her No. 1 fan. Well, except for her boyfriend.
so wait, turned away for one itty bitty second and AJ got out?
@ Evan – oh no, I’m not from Tennessee, just wondering if Rocky Top pushed everyone else over the edge like it does me… I’m actually from Arkansas. Ok, I know that’s not really any better.
and good hit taylor. i bet he didn’t think he’d be battling so hard for his job with the pudge acquistion. makes for good baseball, though.
@becca you could have blinked and missed it .
@Evan: Oh I know Wash won’t do that. But that’s the options I prefer.
How does Elvis not win rookie of the year? He plays the single most important position in the field (well besides pitcher) and he’s one of the top ss in the league. His offensive numbers are good. How does he not? He’s doing huge things with a contending team.
Tennessee and Packers fan from Arkansas talking Rangers…
@callie: you need to talk to the beer guy. He’s in Canada now, but I believe he is from Arkansas.
Last kinda what i was thinking.
Pile on! After going through all the major bullpen arms but O’Day in Game 1, a blowout here would be nice.
PS – for the best version of Rockytop EVER click on the link in my name… it’s the latest “twitter update”
Evan wont know who got the best of that till they both retire.
So far CWS leading.
I wonder if it bothers A Jones to be the only Rangers hitter not to have a hit. I mean he is a .216 hitting clean-up man. Does Wash have no shame?
all i can definitively say about the trade, is mccarthy is taller. i think.
@Evan: much like how I’d never undo Ryan Dempster for John Burkett, yes, if McCarthy was a big part of a Ranger playoff appearance, that would pretty much validate that trade for me, especially with all the other good young arms around now.
@Evan – right now, it’s in the Gonzo/Young for Eaton ranks. If he helps get to the playoffs, its in the Gagne/Lofton ranks. He’s got to do your projected September for 4 or 5 years to get into Teixeira ranks.
Danks hasn’t progressed into a dominant ace by any means so I haven’t judged the trade. At this point…the Texas trade is so awesome, I forgive all previous mistakes.
@Evan, Lefties last much longer in the Bigs. Danks is still the man. He will give them close to 200 innings this year. I’ll be happy for the Rangers for this year but how long will Mac last? And how much DL time does it take?
@ LOTR – hate Rockytop. Absolutely. Almost as much as I hate the Cowboys.
Doesn’t McCarthy have to enter the Hall of Fame as a Ranger to put that trade in the Teixeira ranks?
It’s impossible to hate that version of the song.
And McCarthy is doing EXACTLY what he needs to do. You get a lead, throw strikes. Let the guys make plays and go deep into the game.
@All – kidding about the Cowboys. Just said that to stir things up.
@Evan – I’m more of a let’s move forward kinda gal. I don’t really even think about that trade much. But sometimes late at night, it hurts.
@Callie – there’s room in your heart to hate any one/thing besides Favre?
@ Evan: Logical explanation of your critque of Josh. I guess I just really enjoy sthick crammed down my throat, mixed in with some good sports talk and knowledgable, well-prepared broadcasters.
Thats why I’m a Ticket P1 and could listen to any game Josh Lewin broadcasts!
BTW, good work earlier today on the Rangers draft piece…hope Hurley comes back strong and helps save 2004.
Kinsler is on fire today…
I like the sound on KDFI, I can hear Andrus cussing nice and crisp.
Kinsler is the greatest player in major league history…forget Babe Ruth..give me Kinsler
Did I hear earlier today the Angels series was almost sold out? If so, that is awesome. I wish I could be there…
no blinking. jones is up.
@ Alan in SA – ha ha! now you’re talking… let me see if I can get you admission to the fan club after all..
@ Alan in SA – ha ha! now you’re talking… let me see if I can get you admission to the fan club after all..
@Callie – you staying inside tomorrow?
It’s 9/9/9
@Alan in SA: AJ!
@ Alan in SA. Alan put down the Tequila bottle. You will hurt yourself. Or are you really the alter ego of Ranger Fan?
@Callie–thanks–I feel I’ve come a long way in 5 hours and I want to express my deepest regards to you and everyone else on here who helped me see the light
@ Romo – Wow. I guess I will.
AHHH! A HIT!
I’ll be there on 9/20. May go on 9/19, too, but I really have to get to Denton on Friday or Saturday and check out UNT while I’m in town.
It’s gonna be the best vacation ever!! Rangers/Angels, Pennant Race… Cowboys/Giants, first game ever in JerryDome.
@Evan–your orgasms on the blog over AJ are inappropriate..keep it to yourself
Evan, any clue for the Rangers record for amount of runs scored in a doubleheader?
See miracles do happen.
Can we lose Batting Stance Guy? PLEASE.
Well this is turning out to be a great doubleheader.
How’s everyone? Been away for a few days, but back to enjoy the stretch run!
Big Stroke AJ. He’s the Man.
@ Alan in SA – not sure how you get into the fan club actually, but glad it only took 5 hrs to get you on board.
@Jason O: Good of you to speak up on Josh’s behalf. As I said, I think he’s very well prepared and often very clever, but there are times I think there is too much shtick. And this is five hours we’ve all been together, so maybe I’m a little cranking.
i’m still not sold on jones being our batting against lefties savior, but i might not be as mean to him tonight. oh wait. still have a basket full of laundry. nope. not ready to let go yet.
@Daniel–Rangers scored 30 in the first game of DH against Orioles 2 or 3 yrs ago
AJ: Hit
Wedge: That’s it, pull Laffey.
For Callie/Evan/anyone else who follows college football…
Is giving up a hit to AJ a pitchers equivalent to a coach losing to Mississippi St? (AKA getting Croomed. Killed Zook’s and Mike Shula’s careers)
@Daniel: 39. It won’t be beaten. Ever.
daniel 42
@Callie—in 5 more hours, I’ll be doing Kinsler’s laundry and changing the baby’s diapers so he can get some rest
Blog question – now that I’m out of Corona, should I be drinking:
a. Miller Lite
b. white wine
c. nothing, you lush
d. water, to avoid a headache
@alan/daniel: and they scored 9 in Game 2. I was at the doubleheader, have the ticket and boxscore framed on my wall.
@Callie–how the hell did you run out of your favorite beverage?? HORRIBLE planning–I recommend scotch
@Daniel: 30 in the first game, I believe it was 9(?) in the second game.
Speaking of college football…
@Evan: Saturday, Sept. 19th, 6:45pm CDT, are you ready?
oh yea it was 30 not 33.
all of the above?
@Callie: Dox Equis
@callie-go straight to cough syrup
oops! Dos Equis
Come on Evan, you don’t have faith the rangers will score 22 more runs in this game
not the way i’d spend a honeymoon but ok.
@callie: whatever evan serves you while dusting and mopping?
Miller Lite sucks… so, depending on how many Corona you’ve had, I’d opt for the white.
PS – I drink Wild Turkey, yeung-ling, and when ordering wine I ask which tastes the most like kool-aid, so I may not be the right person to ask.
This game started with a Laffy, and hopefully ends as a Laugher.
@ Romo – yes. the exact equivilent.
@ Alan – poor planning indeed – but drank more during the first game than expected. No scotch available, only wine and tequila
@Evan: But despite how much your Bulldogs fail, don’t forget you have at least one fellow Falcons fan here. Don’t let all these Jerry-Jones’-boot-licking Cowboys fans get you down!
People we are slacking today only 364 posts so far.
BMac is really dealing.
@DC–364 posts is more than the attendance at the game appears to be..what happened to Indians attendance?
@The Beer Guy: Yep, Rangers-Angels, very exciting.
As far as the game you are discussing: I am counting on a Whoo-Pig-Sooey-free night.
Just getting here. I’m glad I didn’t follow the first game. Somebody would have been talking me off the Skyway Bridge until the Rangers finally won. Meaningful September baseball is great. I’m just afraid it’s taking a few years off my life. I’m an emotional basket case. In other news, I wore my Ranger cap in Boston the other day. Not a word from the locals. Could it have been the automatic weapon I was carrying? Go Rangers! Let’s wrap this one up.
@The Beer Guy: Oh, that’s right, your school has the one coach I hate more than any on the face of the earth. Yes, more than Spurrier. My passion just turned rabid.
Sorry, I just think the guy ran out when the going got tough. I’m not an admirer.
@ Evan – I’m afraid if that’s how you feel (whoo-pig-sooey-free) then we can’t be friends. Too bad, as I am indeed hot.
@ All – I swear I am just kidding and am not an alcoholic.
alan they haven’t won much lately.
okay dumb ? time again we win both and red sox and angels win we gain how much ground
@Callie: I’d go Boone’s Farm.
Is it raining in Cleveland or is it just the lousy picture?
half a game.
Callie – no offense to you or anyone else here…
but we’re talking about a baseball game that’s 7-0 on a blog. Most of us here aspire to alcoholism…
@Alan: Rangers would gain a half game.
@Callie: I’m a Georgia fan. And definitely not a Bobby Petrino fan.
@Evan – just wait til he runs to Auburn after Chizik fails.
query:
1) going into this season did anyone consider Wash a better mlb mgr than: OGuillen; Madden; Gaston; Cox; Pinella; Baker; Cooper; JManuel; and, BBochy — how many rings do these guys have?
2) who would have thought the TR’s had more mlb-ready talent that the above teams?
) who’d a thunk the TR’s would have a better record than: the ChiSox; TBRays; Tor; ATL; Cubs; Cincy; Hou; NYMets; SD?
For someone totally lacking in baseball smarts, at least as measured by the assembled experts, bro Wash must carry a whole lotta luck on his shoulder.
@alan: But we also gained half games on both bc they lost…so it’s like a game from the last time we played.
@ Evan – nothing wrong with GA, I lived in ATL for a while. And honestly, not a huge Petrino fan either. I was sad to see Crazy Houston go. And now look, he’s going to be freaking successful at Ole Miss. Of course, he’s a terrible recruiter…
@Evan–please don’t confuse me with the other Alan…I can compute full and half games by myself and don’t even usually have to take my shoes off to do it
@rangers fan – I’m back. Had dinner with my parents and sister. Was following on blackberry from 6th and wondering what the he’ll was going on.
Do I really need to answer that uni question? You know me! Though my royal blue is a kinsler.
Evan – love the Danks question. I don’t think this chapter is written yet.
Evan – agree with you on 99% of opinions. Not lewin though. I like his shtick.
Grieve stole my thunder on bmac’s curve. Definitely not the same pitch.
Byrd isn’t worth the $$ it will take to bring him back. But hrs earned it and we need him. Hope he isn’t the next ownership casualty. My hunch is that he is.
The ump’s strike call sounds like Odd Job from Goldfinger.
C Davis has been on one of those, “I’d rather be lucky than good” tears, lately.
@Evan: Re: Petrino, he sure did run out on Atlanta, and thank god he did. He wasn’t cut out for the NFL, and now I have the best of both worlds. A good NFL-caliber coach in Atlanta, and a solid NCAA coach at Arkansas. I couldn’t be happier! Honestly, would you rather Petrino had stayed at Atlanta? Think of how that might have turned out…bad hiring in the first place, if you ask me.
Ian Popsler!
@mike: The group you mentioned has five World Series rings, but you bring up a good point. Washington may not be the game’s top strategist, but all that’s happened in his time with the Ranges is the club has become better and better. I predict in 2010 they will take steps towards being a more efficient offense after having some weaknesses exposed this season.
At this very moment, Ron Washington is a winning manager (a game over .500 for his career). That is a significant accomplishment.
LOTR – Baseball is my boyfriend though. I love the Rangers and would like for them to beat the Yankees in the playoffs. That’s my dream.
I too have the Food Network on (as someone did earlier)… and now they have the “Chopped Championship” on a battle of previous winners of Chopped… wonder how long they thought of “Chopped Off” as a title.
Would be sweet to gain ground on the Sox and Angels yesterday without playing a game, and today even if they both win.
What a tiny crowd…
if anyone is interested, ratzillas is on animal planet. yup. a show on huge rats. huge ginormous rats. just letting you know.
So what’s the best estimate on MY’s return at this point?
is mccarthy on a pitch count tonight?
Count me as a Josh fan and a major non-fan of Barnett. I’ve said it before, but he always sounds like he’s supressing a burp when he speaks.
@RAT–you obviously were not here at the beginning of the DH…bad talk about Kinsler is NOT allowed…
@Callie–straighten this guy out now..you don’t have another 5 hours tonight
@beerguy: it sounds like he is shooting for the home series with the Angels in a week and a half.
RATzilla! I should change my name…
@ becca – is that anything like ROUS’s?
@alan in SA: Didn’t confuse you and I’m happy to provide game and half-game gain info to whoever.
@Beer Guy: Yes, I’m happy Petrino is gone from Atlanta. Not happy about how he ran out. Thought it showed a lack of something I’d want in a head coach, regardless of level.
@Callie: Honestly, I don’t hate any SEC schools, except Florida. Coaches? Different story. I hate Spurrier because he rubbed it in poor old Ray Goff’s face and all Georgia fans. I hate Petrino because of the Falcons situation. It sounds like it would be easy to hate Lane Kiffin.
@Alan – I was here… Sort of, I’m just a party-pooper!
thanks for the reply, evan. my real point was to note that despite the superior x and o reps of the mgr list and the presumed superior talent, somehow this team, perhaps because, rather than despite, their manager has, to date, excelled.
love Josh but man he seems like he has a lot of time on his hands sometimes the name game really
Nice work by the Rangers today. Righted the wrongs of Baltimore. Must bag tomorrow’s game and head home!
@The Beer Guy: Young has said he’d like to return on Sept. 18 when the Rangers open a three-game series against the Angels. He might be just about ready by the middle of next week, but I think the Rangers will give it an extra day or two (next Thursday is an off day) before letting him go. Because when he goes, he’s going to go.
@becca: McCarthy threw 95 pitches last time out. He should be good for 100-110 tonight.
@ Evan – Lane Kiffin is an idiot and therefore cannot be hated, only shown pity. I too don’t hate any SEC schools, which is ok because my hatred for USC and VT are very time-consuming.
@Dan-drus: Agree on Barnett…he’s just “typical overdone broadcast voice guy” to me. No personality, all voice. Still…Josh’s weirdness does get to me sometimes. And what’s with his jerky head movements?!
@Evan: Then we’re all happy! And I don’t hate Georgia, just a friendly tease. Florida and Alabama are the only SEC football teams that I openly dislike, though of course I want them all to lose vs. Arkansas.
I don’t hate any SEC Schools. But I hate the Students and Fans of many of them.
@Callie: Speaking of USC, I guess the ol’ Mustain family must be having some regrets about now. BWAHAHAHA! Oh boy, I laugh myself to sleep every night over that fiasco, and justice is served.
@Jack Daddy: Good stuff. I knew you would say holland. I’m still torn. I’ve been a day 1 Davis fan. I’m infatuated with Borbon’s speed and holland will be special. Hmmm…
The real question I was going to ask you, since you are the Holland expert. Heard some talk the other day on Holland vs. Hunter and who was the better prospect. They concluded it was Hunter. I was shocked. Hunter has been a surprise. He’s done a great job but he’s a back of the rotation guy at best. A good one though. I think Holland has the chance to be special. I think he can be a dominant ace. Definitely top 2 material. Yes, he has some developing and adjusting to do but he’s got the tools. Think about the improvement Hunter had from last year to this year. If Holland has that…yikes. So my theory: Nothing was really expected o Hunter. He wasn’t hyped. So everything you get from him is icing on the cake. surprising. He instnatly become a fold hero. For Holland…people get down on him easier and even ask if he should be taken out of the rotation, etc. People look at Holland and Hunter and say they’re the same age so they are both at similiar spots in their development. I think Hunter is further along for the simple fact he played college ball. All this to say…are the cards stacked against Holland as far as meeting expectations? Is he ace or bust? That was long-winded…my bad.
Lane Kiffin sure did put a whoopin on whatever directional school they played this weekend.
9:14: Brandon McCarthy has allowed a pair of hits and a run through five innings. Presuming a win tonight, he will have a four-game winning streak, dating back to mid-May. In those five starts (he had a no decision), he’s got (at this very moment) a 2.67 ERA.
@ Beer Guy – did you see him on ESPN the other day trying to justify his move saying “I’ll learn more here that will help me in the NFL” as if that’s why he went…
@The Beer Guy—I was thinking about the wonderful Mustain family this weekend…guess they found it not so easy to bully Pete Carrol and a successful program…hope their boy enjoys coaching junior high girls basketball
@The Beer Guy – read an article recently where Mustain said he had no regrets (but what is he supposed to say?).
@ All – sorry. I know I hate it when these blogs move away from Rangers and to other sports. I promise to now only post re: Rangers for the rest of the night.
9:18: Marlon Byrd has seven hits tonight. He has raised his batting average 11 points. In a single day. In September. And we’re not talking about a guy with not many at-bats; we’re talking about guy who already has more than 500 plate appearances.
@Callie–please speak to RAT immediately about his bad attitude about future HOFer Kinsler—Kinsler should be in HOF by Oct 1, don’t you think?
@Callie: lol, no I didn’t see that, but he has nothing to worry about. He won’t be anywhere near the NFL, well maybe practice squad but that’s it.
@Alan/James: I think his overbearing mother bears much of the blame (the old “my son is a God” mentality), as well as some in-state politics stuff. But yeah, what can he say at this point. Nothing! I don’t believe him when he says no regrets, but whatever. See ya!
@Ranger Fan: Over the last 12 months, nobody has mentioned to me that Hunter is a better prospect than Holland. So, anybody suggesting that now is offering up revisionist history.
And here’s why people would unanimously choose Holland over Hunter as a prospect: Better stuff, mostly velocity. That makes for a potential higher upside. You can’t gauge guile, what kind of learner a guy is, what kind of makeup he has. That is not to suggest that Holland is lacking in any of those areas, only to insist that Hunter has demonstrated just how much of each he has. He was admittedly awful in a brief callup last year. Would have buried a lot of guys. Made Hunter more determined.
it’s been mentioned before, but is there really any way the rangers can keep byrd around next year? even if they get rid of blalock, which is likely, and i still murphy would be around (read cheaper) before byrd… regardless, i love what he’s done this year and i hope he’s a ranger longer than just the 09 season.
Man, the 6th inning has been rough for us!
@alan: You realize that your sarcastic comments just make you look bitter that the player you’ve been all over for reasons that are not understood, has had a pretty productive day, season…
One thing I know about the Rangers… No win is a leisure win these days.
I blame those three runs on Kinsler aka “Sir-pops-out-a-lot”
@ RAT – Kins is the best at 2nd ever, and you would be extremely lucky to vaccuum his living room.
# Beer Guy – whatever gets Mustain through the lonely nights is ok with me. Poor guy.
@ Evan – I love Byrdman. He has a fantastic attitude that seems to be contagious.
@RangerFan: I know you didn’t ask me, but I’m going to weigh in anyway. Holland has the higher upside based on “stuff.” Hunter has worked his butt off, developed his pitches and will probably be an excellent middle of the rotation guy. Remember, this is Hunter’s 3rd stint in the big leagues (counting the short one earlier in the season). Holland has “ace” potential. We have seen flashes this year, but he has been inconsistant (which is to be expected)). I’m expecting major strides next year.
@RF – Hunter has 3 advantages right now – 1. he’s able to use all 4 of his pitches in any count, 2. his change, in particular, is superior to Holland’s, and 3. he had the benefit of tasting the majors last year.
In my opinion, his ceiling will never come come close to Holland’s because his fastball will never come close to Holland’s and also because Holland is a hard throwing lefty, which aren’t super common.
People are fixated on the last 3 Holland starts. The NYY game was against the best offense on the planet and his pen let 2 of the inherited runners score. He was AWFUL vs. Toronto. He had great stuff vs. Balt. bu couldn’t harness it or locate it. Balt was actually swinging the bat well, as they continued on Saturday.
I fully expect Holland to bounce back nicely this Saturday. People also forget that he had the 2 best starts by a Ranger this season, thoroughly dominating efforts.
Finally, offer the 2 guys to every single team in the majors and see which they pick. It will be 32-0. Sort of reminds me of the silly Aikman/Buerlein debate 18 years ago.
All of that being said, I like Tommy Hunter. He’s a warrior.
Eric Nadel just said both Wilson & Francisco are available. Does the fact that they weren’t exactly dominant in game one make you any less likely to use them in game 2?
@Evan: completely agree. This was radio fotter. They were considering both of them prospects still…knowing what you know now type of thing.
This Eric Nadel stat: Davis has saved at least 4 errors today…now 5. Oh this defense is so much better with him at first.
Elvis, having the rough day with the arm. This crept up early in the season and Wash delivered a come to jesus. may be time for a rewind.
@Ranger Fan–you completely mis-understand my humility. You guys TOTALLY turned me around..I’m going to do Kinsler’s laundry and take care of the baby..can’t imagine how good he’ll be with sleep and no worries about domestic chores
Seriously, I made one simple comment about him being asleep on the bases and got scalded on here for it…get over yourself
@evan:
better stuff/more velocity PLUS the all-important fact that he’s a lefty.
@Callie – I shall consider myself extremely lucky then, but I don’t vacuum Kinsler’s living room.
Murphy just did a good Kins impression with that pop-out. heh
@ Alan in SA – I still like you…
@Callie–thank you…I was afraid that sarcasm was no longer allowed on here
@ Alan – Sarcasm = good times.
@Callie–do not let Ranger Fan hear you say that!!!!!!!!
@scooper: Chime in anytime!
@Jack Daddy: Completely agree. I’m not saying all that to take anything away from Hunter. I just think they’re 2 different animals. Hunter is valuable. You need 5 starters. Holland has completely dominated teams. Consistency is the name of hte game but what rookie pitcher comes in and dominates consistently? Can’t think of any. So I think to all the sudden say Holland may not be what we think is a little insane. I’m looking forward Holland Saturday. Such good memories of the Saturday night Boston game last month…I still think that was the single biggest game this team has played this year, maybe in years.
I love Kinsler. Favorite player. Hey, the site that I abandoned to spend all my time on this silly site has a feature devoted to all the reasons why I’m obsessed with him and why you should be too.
But he’s had a weird season. His swing/approach/whatever was so messed up for 3 months. Since his DL stint, he looks like the old Ian. I don’t get worked up when people criticize him. He can handle. He’s a bada$$. Now put down Holland, and I get defensive like a parent!!
This inning is important. Not just for tonight, but for tomorrow. We NEED to preserve CJ and FF for tomorrow.
OMG this blog is exhausting…
PS. Seattle up 1-0 early.
@Jack Daddy: A couple miscues…but 2 web gems.
Brandon got squeezed on the 2-0 pitch. Cost him the walk.
okay we win and anahiem loses we gain a game and a hald correct
@callie: exhausting good? or exhausting bad?
half long day tired sorry
Eddie ??? really
Weird, my MLB.tv feed keeps flipping to the Cleveland announcers on the Rangers feed…
Man, I thought they would take McCarthy out after the sixth. Questions for virtual team: Has Guardado appeared in any game since coming off the DL? and 2) Is there something wrong with O’Day? Wash seems a little hesitant to use him lately. Seemed like a good spot for him to start the sixth.
Exhausting good – to quote Arnold – I’ll be back.
@Callie: I think you are setting a record for emoticons tonight. We’ll let it slide.
@Alan in SA: Sarcasm is allowed. No worries. But we’ve got some passionate peeps here. They will argue.
@Jack Daddy: You were at dinner when Elvis made a couple of Jeter-like jump throws from the outfield. I’ll write off some of the sloppiness in the second game due to a doubleheader, but it certainly couldn’t hurt for Washington to remind him.
@Dan-drus: Good point on the lefty thing. It would make an important tie-breaker if the two were considered close prospects, but on talent alone Holland is considered a far superior talent. That does not, however, necessarily make him a better major leaguer. Right now, Hunter is the better of the two.
Let’s not count our chickens. Nothing comes easy for us.
Guardado!!!!
Rhymes with Jennings?
Oh, thank God. Its Eddie here to save the day.
@ Beer Guy – mine is doing the same thing. Odd.
Why does Eddie ever pitch anymore. Nothing good happens.
no mas Guardado!
Grumble, grumble. Come on, can’t we win an easy game??
Why is he allowed to do more than wear a uniform and collect a check? Why? Seriously.
So where is O’Day? He’s obviously rested….
One run is about all it takes for Seattle most of the time. Is it King Felix tonight?
@ Evan – ouch – I think it’s only around 4 in six hours… don’t hate.
@ RAT – could be worse than Guardado. Not sure how..
this game is ridiculous. our bullpen is making things interesting.
will say it again – guardado can not get out major league hitters at a satisfactory rate. this team continues to have 2 glaring holes: mid-inning lefty out of pen (is that you Kasey Kiker in 2010?) and right handed power bat in the OF/DH/1B.
This rally started when BMac got squeezed on ball 3 to the leadoff hitter.
Okay, I’m off to drive my car off the Skyway Bridge. Please don’t try to stop me.
Yep Tom…he’s up tonight vs. Kazmir.
Hard to think of the last real laugher this team has played, they always find a way to make it interesting…
Oh, this game sucks.
eddie is important for everything done off the mound. on the mound, well, not as important.
Any dp’s this game?
the only middle relief arm that I have any confidence in? Doug Mathis.
Elvis missed tag. if he gets glove down, he gets call.
@Jack Daddy: I think they’d be better off going outside for a LH RP for next year.
Oh no Angel is in the crew…he’s putrid. Is he calling balls/strikes tomorrow?
not counting O’Day as “middle” man. The fact he’s not in there yet makes it look like he’s pitching 8-9 tonight. Or at least that’s the hope.
i guess the rangers (i’m looking at PR guru blake) didn’t want this one to get away too quick so evan could have lots of the talking on his blog. or something.
man, i love how these guys fight but for real, it would be ok to just put some of these games away early and leave them like that. i still have to be at work tomorrow!
I think the control problems that Kiker displayed this year would keep him out of the left handed bullpen spot for next year.
Way to go Grilli! I have confidence in him most of the time.
@Evan: Off topic…who would you get in contact with to make game experience complaints? Had a friend who wanted to know.
You just can’t do it any better than Grilli did it there.
Confidence growing in Grilli ever so slightly.
The Beer Guy – agree that that will be plan, but 1) may not be able to pull it off and 2) i just don’t know what kind of $$ this thing will have, given the ownership situation.
I am not a fan of spending big $$ on bullpen free agents. you never know what you’ll get from year to year, or within a year (look at this year with Oday and grilli, plus mathis).
i think they will sign somebody, but by ASB, i think Kiker will be that guy and he should be able to excel in that role (if he can stop hitting people).
@becca: Rangers did a decent job of putting games away early in the season, but it’s September and everything is harder for everybody.
i would add that i think moscosco could be a real player next year too. and if nippert stays in the pen, and strop gets some miles under his belt, hey, it’s not too horrible of a bull pen.
is that first time Ian’s been over .260 since when? May? does that put him over? he’s got to be close.
@Ranger Fan: You can either have them email me and I’ll pass it along or just email me and I’ll reply with a couple of contacts for you.
God I love Kinsler
Kinsler hit a horizontal pop-up! Unheard of.
@evan: quit being right all the time.
@Jack Daddy: .259
No what do you do, assuming the score stays in save territory for us? Let Grilli and O’Day split the last two innings as needed? Go with Frankie again?
.259. darn
I’ve gotta say – we really really really just don’t like winning games by a large margin. Why do something like that? I certainly don’t mind taking years off my life from the stress in these games…
I feel like the move for Kins to the 3 hole has sparked him up, anyone want to back me up on that or am I just making things up?
@Jack: I can see that, and yeah the money thing is an issue for sure. But usually there are some solid, track-record lefties out there for a million or two.
beer guy – this is where wash doesn’t need to over-manage. grilli threw the ball as well as he has in a Rangers uni. roll him back out there. just have oday ready in case.
@The Beer Guy: I would guess O’Day gets the eighth and you have the ability to go right-left-right (O’Day-Wilson-Frankie) if need be in the ninth.
@All: It should be noted that Francisco did pitch in both games of the doubleheader in Arlington last week.
abreu up with bases load and 1 out.
@Will–you’re exactly right about Kins–He NEVER makes base running mistakes unless they are inspired by his idolatry of Ricky Henderson and as just noted, he’s now hitting over 260 for the year…He’s headed to Hall of Fame as soon as season is over
@will: he’s been better since coming off of the DL. I think the 2 weeks did more good than moving down in the order.
@Alan – I was hoping he would play a little more before going to the Hall, but I guess they could make an exception for him, right?
Murray and Hinkley both had decent numbers in OKC this year not sure why they didn’t get called up.
What is wrong with King Felix?? Do we miss him in the series? Or…he pitches Sunday?
i don’t know if the stats prove it, but i like ian in an rbi role in the line-up. but ha. i don’t need stats to think it’s a good idea. i go by gut. like wash. and also by housekeeping duties.
@evan – not sure if you saw a couple of questions from yesterday:
1. any uniform rumors for next year (more red, powder blue throwback game)?
2. how do ticket sales/attendance for the 9 game homestand look?
Will: Quit making stuff up.
@Will–If you had been on here since the beginning of the DH, you would understand that the HOF has made an exception for him..he’s going to be inducted in November, elected to Kennedy’s Senate seat in Jan and lead the Rangers to a dynasty for the next 10 years..you will love it
cj’s in. could be awesome. could cause extreme indigestion.
Why C.J. when Grili had awesome stuff and C.J. has already been used? Why Wash why??
RF – he’s pitching tonight, so that puts him in line for Sunday, barring rainout this week.
@DC – Murray faded toward the end of season.
@Jack Daddy: Don’t believe there are any uniform tweaks in store for next year. A “Turn Back the Clock” weekend is something that could be decided over the winter.
I’ve heard nothing to suggest that tickets are moving fast or that they or not for the upcoming series. I will definitely make a check on this tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how a huge Rangers homestand draws during football season.
@ Alan – dont forget Time’s Person of the Year award.
grabbing the tums.
i’m not a manager, but it was a mistake pulling Grilli, in my opinion. he had the hot hand and was dealing. oh, well. buckle it up, CJ.
@Jack Daddy: I’ll pray for rain.
Bring O’Day in.
@Callie…I didn’t forget, I just assumed that everyone understood that.. I think he’ll have time to cure cancer before spring training too
@ Alan – yes, but unfortunately his over-use of emoticons kept him from running away with the Nobel Prize. Too bad.
@ Alan/Callie – This just gets better and better. Unfortunately I had to gametrack at work/listen in the car up to this point. I’m glad all that got laid out though while I was out – it really calms me down and hammers out the future. I’m getting my sunglasses on now.
Strange move to bring Wilson in to start the inning. He’s being overused…
@Callie–Nobel will have to wait a year–also, don’t forget that he has to sort out the health care crisis too
i would like to state that i officially would be in favor of some insurance runs at this point.
@becca—you got the tums out just in time
this isn’t part of the cheeky Ian talk and not meant as a slight at Elvis, but that was a good play by Ian. Elvis’ throw kind of handcuffed Ian and he stayed with it. That could have been a disaster.
I guess at this rate Wash will bring back Frankie, though he should just let O’Day finish it out.
If by tums you mean Darren O’Day
@Callie–we have to straighten up now..we’ve just been accused of being “cheeky”
On a serious note, I’m really pleased with the Rangers ability thus far to fend off this trailing team. I hope they can continue to do so.
Boy we’re bringing the heat tonight…I love it
@evan – as we nervously wait out the botton of the 9th, how come Michael Main isn’t a candidate for the Azl Fall League? Too inexperienced?
i love how murphy gets through his at bats. anyone off hand know average pitches per plate appearance for the rangers or where to find that? murphy has to be up there in this line up. him and omar seem to be most disciplined up there.
I agree..If we can hang on to this one and win one tomorrow, we’ve stepped back from the abyss one more time..this team’s ability to bounce back has to impress you, especially give how young they are
The lactic acid that causes fatigue doesn’t really have a chance to set in over a few hours. Some, yes, but pitching 2 games of a DH is easier on the arm than back-to-back days.
So says the exercise phsyiologist in the family, anyway.
i think it should have been ‘he and omar’. i don’t have my strunk and white elements of style near by.
Tolkein’s lost hobbit… Taylor Teabaggins!
@ becca – I agree completely – I feel pretty good when he is up.
@becca-I don’t think Evan allows you on here if you don’t have the Strunk and White’s
COMPLETELY off topic:
http://subscribers.footballguys.com/rate-my-team/form.php
but this is dadgum awesome.
It’s a big fan of the Romohicans, but doesn’t like the EBay Stolen Dogs so much.
I think Elvis has been pretty good in that regard especially for a rookie.
Can Davis deliver with RISP?
good point, rf
@Style – I have my AP Stylebook in the garage somewheres.
It’s why I like radio more – I get to make the rules up as I go, and my comma splices are not a problem, that’s atleast a few of the reasons I do, anyway.
Thank you, CD!
happy insurance runs to all of you!
Teabaggins with the great at-bat to set-up Davis for the shot.
HUGE! What a day Chippy D is having!
That. Was. #@%!ing. Huge.
Way to go CD… And to think we had to put up with Blalock and AJ for so long
nicely done, Davis. are we going to claim that he is back?
Elvis was leading in pitches seen.
5 run lead, sit Frank, bring in Edd..oh wait.
yay! go rangers!!
Wash totally needs to stick with O’Day here.
I am now a CD believer …..
What were those davis numbers again??
http://www.fangraphs.com/ probably find the pitch stats there.
@gunter – you claim something that you then test by proving or disproving the alternative.
in Davis’ case, I fail to reject the null hypothesis.
(Stupid Rangers – I had Calc homework to do, but NOOOOOO I had to follow the game and have a machine rate my Fantasy Football Teams.
Man I wish Hank Blalock has started the nightcap? What’s Wash thinking!?!
3 run home runs are the best of the home runs. Think about it: solo shots are just kind of useless. 2 run shots are nice, but not as good as 3 run shot. And I’m always a little sad after a grand slam, because now the bases are empty.
So, 3 run shot is the winner!!
There’s your ballgame, courtesy of the Davis Family and their little boy, Chris.
Anybody else feel most comfortable when o’day is the releiver pitching?
Howdy folks, for the record Chris Davis would have had that one.
well, at least german didn’t let it get past him. for some reason i feel better about that.
@Jack Daddy – what homer leaves someone on base?
how many balls has Davis had to pick tonight on bad throws from other infielders? he’s had a tough time at first tonight.
I feel pretty good when O’Day and Mathis pitch. They may struggle some, but they don’t blow up.
Rest up Omar–the rest of the 3b starts are yours until Young gets back–German is a disaster at defense at 3rd
You have to love the way Chris Davis is driving the ball to the opposite field.
@S.Arcasm – I’m with you, not that he can’t make them, but I’d feel a lot better if I had seen fewer Chris Davis picks
so john, you’re back off the bridge?
I have to say I always look for Chris Davis’ line first when I check out a box score. He’s struggled so much this season and I’ve really been pulling for him. If he can hit some, it will be really tough for someone like Smoak to move him out the way he plays defense.
Fun stuff.
ball game(s)!
I repeat my earlier statement that the Rangers should play all doubleheaders the rest of the year. 2 games back! Go M’s!
We need one, ANYWAY!!!
Oh what a day…Good days for Kinsler, Byrd and Davis especially. Sweet glove plays from Elvis. Good games.
No, I’m still on the bridge but I’m following the game. Cops have tasered me but I still have my Rangers hat on. I’ve stapled it to my head in case I still need to jump.
OH! What a day!
@last – genius site. Between reading about the Rangers and this, I won’t get crap done tomorrow at work! Nice work.
This is almost a triple-header considering they play so early tomorrow… See y’all then!
Maybe…
i like it!!!
POW POW!
@last – yeah, but with a grand slam, there were A LOT of them.
@Jack Daddy – My calculus homework isn’t done… but I do have a 90% chance of the playoffs in my #1 League.
The big ? does Elvis get #1 webgem finally?
Good night everyone! See you tomorrow!!
OK, ya’ll have fun, I’m going to go read about Ethics in Advertising (seriously!)
@ALl: Thanks for your work tonight. Job well done by all the Cornerians. Post-Game Show up momentarily.
I think this site invites Free Radicals…That is healthy, Right?
Okay, I’m off the bridge now and on my way to Charter hospital for evaluation. Everyone rub their Ranger hats tomorrow for good luck.
Josey probably thinks that Smoak would be a good replacement for Davis.
Notice he didn’t stick around after Davis got the clutch hit? Davis was also spectacular on defense in both games – the one hiccup was more than wiped out with stellar plays.
This team needs him.
11th and 12th games the Rangers have scored double digit runs this year.
First time they’ve done it in consecutive nights.
Not bad with Hamilton and Young out of the lineup.
@DC:
Elvis had the #2 and #1 webgems on the 9pm edition.
I meant consecutive GAMES up above, obviously.
Why is every Yankee walk-off the number 1? Ridiculous
I hope Wash plays his best tomorrow to sweep these turkeys.
CD can hit…I think he will end up being a .280 hitter with tons of pop. A five hole type guy who plays gold glove defense. If he keeps hitting the ball the other way we are really going to see lots of good things moving forward. He looks like a completely different player and his defense is just so superior to Blalock it isn’t even comparable.
