Story of the Game
Doubleheaders are funny animals. Seven runs got the Red Sox a Sunday sweep of the Rays. Seven runs got the Rangers a convincing Game 1 win over Seattle, which was negated a few hours later by Felix Hernandez.
A win on Sunday night would have given the Rangers four sweeps of twin bills this season, unheard of. Instead, they’ll welcome Oakland to town on Monday night trailing Boston by four in the wild-card race and Los Angeles by six in the West.
Rookie Tommy Hunter, who started the year at Triple-A Oklahoma, threw his first major league complete game in the opener and has the personality to say he “finally” got it. Rookie Derek Holland took baby steps in the second game, better than his most recent starts but not good enough to beat Hernandez. “He competed very well,” manager Ron Washington said. “The opponent was just better.”
Scott Feldman will go his 17th win on Monday night, followed by Brandon McCarthy and probably Dustin Nippert. After Thursday’s off day, it remains to be seen if Kevin Millwood takes his regular turn on Friday against the Angels’ Scott Kazmir after another shaky performance on Saturday night.
If Millwood doesn’t start Friday, would Hunter go since it would be his regular day after the off day? Said Washington: “I haven’t talked to Mike [Maddux] about that yet.”
Millwood threw a bullpen session on Sunday instead of his usual post-start regime of long toss. ”Just working on a few mechanical things,” he said. “Just trying to get where it’s more consistent. You always tweak with your mechanics a little bit. My stuff’s not been the problem. It’s just consistently throwing it where I want to.”
Winner of eight games before the All-Star break, Millwood has won only twice since. On Saturday night, he didn’t make it out of the fourth inning. He said he’s not discouraged: “You have times in the year when things don’t go so well. You just try to figure ‘em out. This is just one of those times.”
Three Up:
• Tommy Hunter threw a complete game in his 16th major league start.
• Elvis Andrus tied a club rookie record with hits in each game giving him a 15-game hitting streak.
• Four hits total in the doubleheader for Julio Borbon.
Three Down:
• Only 20 games remain, nine at home.
• Though Derek Holland showed improvement over his previous three outings, he still lost his fourth consecutive start to drop to 7-11 overall and 5-10 as a starter.
• Chris Davis was limping around the clubhouse afterward with a large wrap around his right foot, the result of a pitch fouled off the foot in the second game.
Stat o’ the Game:
5-0-1: The Rangers had won five home series and split one since losing two of three games against the Twins in mid-July. That streak ended with Sunday night’s loss.
Player of the Game(s)
You can take your choice of Tommy Hunter, Felix Hernandez for seven shutout innings or your own write-in candidate.
Pardon me for asking, Mr. Millwood, but isn’t location part of “your stuff”?
Both were excellent but I liked Hunter better for obvious reasons.
It’s over.
Incredible double standard between Millwood and Holland. They both suck. Holland more so and longer than Millwood.
’10 rotation: Feldman/Hunter/McCarthy/Millwood/FA
Holland and Feliz in the pen
I like Hunter because I happen to be his Grandpa.
GO RANGERS
I think you can still put Holland down for the rotation in ’10. Good grief, the kid’s good. I just think his arm is tired. Maybe he’s mentally tired, too. The long major league season does that to you. He’ll be fine next year. Probably good. Just think about how the Tigers brought along their young pitchers and allowed them to suck every now and then.
But I’m definitely for Feliz in the pen. Probably the future closer. Better suited than Frankie.
Although this stretch is tough and the Rangers may not make it to the post season the way some of their pitchers are performing right now. I still am optimistic. Holland is learning, he has a ways to go. Remember he is only 22 and this is his first season. Yes, it is tough to watch when he pitches right now, especially since it seems that hitters are so keyed in on him and his location is a bit off. One may recall, Hernandez of the Mariners was this type of pitcher a couple of years ago and look at him now. Patience with the young pitchers will pay off. I’m looking forward to Harrison coming back.
I do not like the way Millwood is pitching and although I think he is sincere when he says he is working on the issues he is currently having I can’t help but think that age is catching up to him. Not sure if the 180 inning note in his contract was such a good idea for the Rangers but I think they are kinda stuck with it now.
If certain things fall into place and the team plays well against the Angels they still have a shot but either way this has been a great season so far and fun to watch. Its really nice to be able to see this team contend and I think this is just the beginning.
@Evan.. where is the link for Player of the Game voting. I choose Hunter, sorry can’t vote for a non Ranger.
Millwood is 34 while Holland is 21. Holland is in his SECOND major league season. Millwood is in the twilight of a career while Holland is at the beginning. You give talented young pitchers plenty of runway so they can develop.
Personally I think the Rangers handled Feliz right and Holland wrong. Holland should have spent the first half of the season at AAA like Feliz.
“his stuff”. Lately ever time it’s around the plate it gets hammered. I can see where you would nibble and go 3-2 on most every batter.
Hunter all the way, Baybee!
Can Millwood go on the DL again?
To me, Holland looks much more mentally fatigued than physical. Also, it apppears to me that he, more so than others, misses MY being in the lineup. MY is always there to pat him on the bak and offer some encouragement.
This team has had a most excellent season. The pieces are in place for years to come (rather than there being missing pieces to find). They should be proud of this season as they have showed the toughness and resiliency to stay in the hunt. I still believe they can catch one of the teams (Angels/RedSox), but this experience will be invaluable down the road when they contend for the division championship regualrly for the next several years eventually leading to the elusive World Series championship they will ultimately win.
You mean like T B after their run last year. Baseball is a different game each and every year.
