ARLINGTON - I’ll go ahead and open this with no idea whether baseball will be played at Rangers Ballpark on Sunday. First pitch for the opener has been moved to 2:05 at the earliest.
Will post lineup for Game 1 Home Run Pool when that becomes available. There’s a 50 percent chance that Evan will be here early in a first game. I’ll be happy to keep you updated on Red Sox-Rays Game 1 (scheduled to start in about 30 minutes) if you’d like.
3:30: Looking at starting in about an hour, assuming there’s no more rain before then.
6:35: My good and very observant friend Jack_Daddy suggested on Friday that these might be the 96 strangest hours in Rangers history.
This weekend has been surreal. Between the weather and the delays, it’s lulled me into a state I’d suggest as zombie-like. No energy. No focus. I can only imagine what it’s done to the Rangers, who have had to sit in that clubhouse for more than seven hours worth of delays over the last three days.
I realize they are winning right now and could still end up winning two of three from Seattle, but I just wonder what you think: Would this team benefit more by playing these games in something of a weather-induced malaise in front of no real significant crowd and without its two top offensive threats? Or would they have been better off, canceling games early, agreeing to play the extra games in Seattle – if they impacted the playoff race – and with Michael Young and Josh Hamilton back in the lineup?
And your thoughts?
Could not be a worse pitching matchup for our Rangers today. Good luck with that.
Go Cowboys.
The curse of Lee Mazzilli has taken center stage this weekend. After the euphoria of a Cleveland sweep, there could not be a more horrific weekend. A team with serious financial problems loses potentially three days of gate on a September pennant chase weekend. Those money problems are buzzing all over the local media and Internet. Kinsler publicly calls out the fans for not coming to the Ballpark. Dillweed sucks again, and no one has the cajones to bench the obviously gassed pitcher in a playoff hunt. What a sorry coda to a fascinating season.
Now the earliest start for playing two on Sunday has been moved to 4 p.m. Down to a drizzle at the Ballpark, at least for now.
Statement from Nolan Ryan: “We will do everything we can to play two games today against the Mariners. However, with the forecast calling for more rain over the next several hours, we have decided to push the scheduled starting time back to at least 4:00 in order to lessen the inconvenience for our fans. We will have further updates as the day progresses, and we thank our fans for their patience with this weather situation.”
Gates will open at 1, though the 4 start obviously isn’t a given.

Victor Martinez has singled in Dustin Pedroia in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie in the opener at Fenway.
Rays tied the score 1-1 in the seventh, but Gabe Gross was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Boston announcers indicate Red Sox got a break on the call.
Clay Buchholz out after seven innings, five hits and a run. In is Hideki Okajima, who has given up runs in his last four outings. First appearance since Monday.
Red Sox have gone ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth. Ortiz led off with a pinch-hit double. Pinch runner Joey Gathright bunted to third. Pedroia two-run homer.
Happy to see the great Jeff Miller at the ballyard today. Evan can stay home and have a pizza and blog football. Better insights here!
Red Sox’s lead in the wild card race is now 3.5 games. Jonathan Papelbon, who was a couple of years ahead of Darren O’Day at Bishop Kenny HS in Jacksonville, Fla., converted his 36th save in 39 opportunities in Boston’s 3-1 win. Tampa Bay has now lost 10 straight. Game 2 at Fenway will be Jon Lester against James Shields.
Man, the Rays have totally collapsed, and just when we needed them too. Bet the only three games they’ll win the rest of the year are the ones they play against us!
“It’s fun being here,” Padilla said. “I’m very happy. The boys welcomed me and it gives me more confidence. It’s very simple: I just have to pitch.”
Geez…….Vicente is 3-0 and Millwood is 1-3 and the team is 1-4 in his starts since August 19……….
But I’m sure the clubhouse “feels” better with those four losses instead of having to “feel” the way the Dodgers “feel” right now……….
Just who in hell is running this madness?
Carlon Quintin has hit a bases-loaded single in the top of the first to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead on Scott Kazmir, who has walked two.
Any chance that millwood would do what’s best for the team and put himself on the DL…..what say you scott boras fans?
Angels got a run back in the bottom of the first.
Grounds crew has come out, to a rousing ovation from dozens beneath the stands and is slowly removing the tarp. One guy’s really having a difficult time hanging onto his grip. I think the trick is not to leave left field looking like Lake Arlington. Nolan Ryan is among those inspecting the field.
so if the rangers don’t get these games in does that mean they won’t have enough money to meet payroll….mlb please stand by the phones for us to call……..geez what drama!
3:30: Looking at starting in about an hour, assuming there’s no more rain before then.
Angels and White Sox 2-2 through three.
@Jeff: how does it look?
@jeff: will they still try to play 2? Will the games be televised?
@scooper: With the Mariners off on Monday and the Rangers still here, I think they’ll try for two as late as possible unless the weather again proves troublesome. Still totally overcast though no longer raining. As per TV, John Blake said they were seeking a waiver from MLB rules that prohibit showing a game after 3 on Sunday as per contract with ESPN. But, he said, that has been granted before in the name of common sense. And the TV folks next door sure look like they’re getting ready for a telecast. Right now, summit on the field including Daniels, Ryan, Washington, Wakamatsu and crew chief. Tarp has been put back on the infield, but I think that’s just precautionary.
@Jeff: thanks!
looking at 4:45 first pitch now.
Well crap, it’s gonna be another late nighter watching the Rangers
Kazmir threw a season-high 118 pitches in six innings and will leave with another no-decision if the Angels don’t score in the bottom of the inning.
Great observations by Jeff Miller. Is Evan in the building or still being a pigskin head?
Now THAT is a typical Scott Kazmir start.
I think you’d better put an update on your top post referring folks to the Depot. I’ve been waiting for an update above.
Red Sox got a run in the second to go ahead 1-0.
At 4:42, the grounds crew is still working on the field. Doesn’t appear we’ll start at 4:45.
Torii Hunter homered for a 3-2 LAA lead going to the eighth.
5:05 is the newest start time.
@Jeff: are we staying with this Depot or are we starting a new one?
@scooper: Planning just one depot today/ Hopes that doesn’t prove to be a problem.
Angels won 3-2. Fuentes got the save.
Well, here we go, everyone! Let’s win 2!
did Scott Shield just temporary save the Rangers season, getting out of bases loaded jam vs. the Sox?
In the words of the great Jim Ross: GOOD GAWD ALMIGHTY!!!
We got some beisbol!!!!
LOL Tampa is still losing regardless.
So, is the field in perfect bunting conditions today?
If they count that an error, then I just might punch a baby….
Darren Oliver got the win in relief today for the Angels. In listening to much of that game on the Angels’ station, the announcers said Oliver (5-1 at age 38 with an ERA under 3.00) got some votes in the team’s recent vote for the club pitcher of the year.
So have the “Millwood to the pen” talks been up and running since last night?
Hunter looks solid.
We’re leading, let’s call it and go home.
Hunter w/ a no-no through 2.
No review on that one.
@buck: I guess you don’t believe in jinxes.
That Davis HR just thunked into the soggy grass on Greene’s Hill.
@scooper – nope, it’s all about destiny!
There goes the no-no. Bummer.
I think Tampa has just mailed it in.
Bosox ahead 3-0 going to the sixth behind Lester.
Rays leader is Pena. Season went south quick when he got hurt.
Is everyone staying dry this weekend?
@Jackdaddy: The kazmir trade sent a bad message to the players too.
Ranger_ve – agreed.
In the HR pool I had Davis going long in the second with one out and one on, but that sucky Pudge grounded into a DP!!
(Just kidding for the sarcastically challenged).
I think I’ve got crush for the 5th inning. However I didn’t specify which game so I wonder if it will hold up in a court of law.
Are we still playing 2 today?
Now maybe Dave Anderson said something to German coming around third. But it appeared German came around, got no sign either way, hence headed homeward.
@JeffMiller: I notice that, maybe Dave just winked at him.
Jason Bay homered off Lance Cormier in the bottom of the eighth for a 4-0 lead.
Man somebody has to make sure Ian drinks his coffee before the game.
Should have had 2 there.
Let’s go Rangers!
@Buck: playing as many as Mother Nature allows
@Ranger_ve: Maybe there’s a silent signal – like, if my mouth is open, go – but I doubt it.
Tampa has lost 10 straight. If they lose today, it will be 11 in a row.
Tampa had mailed it.
Jeff Miller, were you a Rhodes Scholar?
Dozens of Japanese journalists, here to see Ichiro get hit No. 200 for a major league record ninth time (he’s at 199 now), just caught their breath with that F7.
That’s good though because doesn’t the Rangers still have a series against the Double A’s?
Whew! Looks like there is a good chance that Ichiro will make history in Arlington at some point today if the weather holds. I wouldn’t mind if he went hitless the rest of the way.
58 pitches thru 5; Hunter is looking good.
My good and very observant friend Jack_Daddy suggested on Friday that these might be the 96 strangest hours in Rangers history.

And your thoughts?
Billy Wagner is on in the ninth with a four-run lead after Lester limited Tampa Bay to two hits and three walks in eight innings.
So what you’re saying Evan is that the rain has put you into a Blalockian state?
I’d also still rather they play the games here.
Alright Murphy! I had him going out in the 4th w/ two on in the “Overflowing” Homer Pool.
@Evan:Delays sure mess with you rythm but this late in the year extra rest days can rejuvenate a bullpen not to mention our two injure horses.
@Evan, I’m all for home games but this is a terrible, possibly unprecedented, situation that defies logical deductions.
@Mike E: Blalockian… I’m still laughing!!!
@Mike E: I don’t know if the weather has had an impact on my sinuses or what, but mood and physical well-being are both at rock bottom levels. Feel like I’m sleep-walking through everything.
I go back and forth on whether doing everything possible to play these games under less than perfect conditions and with less than a full roster is the best possible deal.
@Evan: At this point, with Boston and LA seemingly never losing, I don’t think it makes much difference.
The Red Sox scored seven runs in two games at Fenway today and swept the Rays.
@Ranger_ve: So what do you feel would have been the best possible decision for the club.
@Evan – I want to agree that it might be better to play them later in Seattle but you can’t assume guys will be healthy by then, and you might find yourself in a situation where a pitcher cant go for some reason. I think sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you dont.
Radar looks like more rain within the hour. I wouldn’t even venture to say how heavy or how long. This is a relatively fast moving game.
Playing doubleheaders right before the playoffs does not do much to help your chances in the playoffs…
@Evan: Been a strange weekend. I’ve seen weather affect teams many times – both positively and negatively. Last night was painful. Unfortunately, I think Millwood set the tone.
The Rangers are still in this dang race … how can you not get excited. Too bad there aren’t a lot fans in attendance. We’ve got some interesting series coming up but we’ve got to be close to make them interesting.
Sounds to me like Evan’s just getting sick. Chicken soup, man, quickly!
@The Beer Guy: One of Boston or Los Angeles is going to lose two of its next three games – at a minimum – can guarantee you that. The flip side: The other is going to win at least two of three. At this point, even though the deficit in the West is bigger, it might make more sense for the Rangers to hope the Red Sox sweep the Angels this week. It’s still possible that by the end of the day today, the Rangers could be five games out in the West. If they could pick up two games thanks to the Red Sox this week, they could enter their series against the Angels three games back and with Michael Young and Josh Hamilton back in the lineup. Couldn’t really ask for more than that.
@Evan – You may have the dreaded H1N1. If not, sounds like you need some good med’s or a couple of beers. This is always a hard decision for me.
@Mike E: Great point. But what’s your No. 1 decision factor right now: Improving your chances of getting to the playoffs? Or setting up a schedule that improves your chances if you get to the playoffs?
@juboon: It’s going to be Won Ton Soup, tonight. Chinese delivery on speed dial.
Anyone have any thoughts about the story on the Rangers site about Millwood trying to figure out what’s wrong with himself? (sorry, don’t know how to link it)
I have noticed in the last week that my attention has been divided multiple ways. I swore off the Cowboys this offseason to focus on baseball, but two trips to HS football and Jr. High football games has got my nose twitching for football again. This weekend has kind of ushered me into a fall mindset, where I am thinking about big bucks and the strong stench of East Texas Oaks bearing their fruit. I must say something needs to happen and happen fast for me to endure that of which I have invested soooo much time in this summer.
@evan: what is the thinking right now if we only get one game in tonight? Would we play a DH tomorrow?
Evan – not sure. I’m in the same fog. However, I think it has as much to with what Boston has done last night and today and what LAA did today.
I will say this, with no hesitation or doubt of any kind – if we go on to win this game and finish in the playoffs, then this performance by Tommy is the signature performance of the season.
It’s just depressing to see all those empty seats out there.
Finally, I really enjoyed the college games yesterday but got nothing out of the NFL today. In fact, without the red zone channel it would not have been watchable. I mean, scoring play, commercial, kickoff, commercial? That’s ridiculous.
@Buck: Not fluish. No fever. No sore throat. Lacking in energy. Attribute a lot of it to the dramatic change in weather and atmospheric pressure.
From the way that Millwood has been pitching, you could say that he too may be experiencing a Blalockian (I think I prefer Blalockonian) state.
@evan: rainy weather is tends to be mildly depressing. it can easily make you lethargic.
@Evan: Seasonal affective disorder?
Sometimes in management decisions there are no ideal solutions. Just pick the one least painful and most expedient. Play the games and it will galvanize your team for better or worse. Win and all is well. It could make these guys stronger. Indecision will kill you quicker.
Personally I think Milly’s just exhausted. No idea what to do about it though.
@juboon: Jeff Miller is on that. I’ve got some thoughts, based on Ron Washington’s reaction to last night’s performance. But those were thoughts from last night. It was before Washington had a chance to talk with pitching coach Mike Maddux and GM Jon Daniels, so I wanted to wait a while to post them. Last night, Washington kind of brushed off the idea that Millwood might not be the best choice to face the Angels on Friday. Today, it sounds like the Rangers are thinking that maybe he shouldn’t.
@Scooper: Jeff Miller at park. I’m monitoring from home. There are travel complications for the Mariners and the weather situation is up in the air. Think they will have to address the situations as they arise.
@Jack Daddy: What’s it say about the NFL that I feel asleep, while blogging, during the third quarter of the Cowboys game. Obviously, I’m a little bit under the weather. But the NFL does not hold the same level of interest for me as the college game.
I don’t know mr. clean, Evan pokes his head in and the comments start pouring in.
Btw, why didn’t anyone (read me) listen to everyone that said Brees would be the top fantasy QB? My 2 teams sucked today (also contributing to said fog).
Fell asleep while blogging. For shame, for shame. WHat would we say if Wash fell asleep in the dugout?
@Evan: Hope you feel better. Maybe a couple of wins tonight will right the ship.
Before the game, Ron Washington said Kevin Millwood will be working on mechanics again Monday to determine whether he’ll make his scheduled start on Friday, the opener of the Angels’ visit.
@Evan – without fantasy football, the only reason why I would watch would be so my boys would experience it (don’t want to be an NFL party popper for them).
Of course with the Ags probably sucking (in spite of what Irish insists – hope he’s right), college game may not do it for me either. Solution? Let’s make October baseball mean something.
You’re dawg game last night was terrific. One of 5 great games on tv yesterday.
I’d lock Millwood in the basement and only let him out on off days.
Evan, are you going on the next roadtrip to Oakland? Is Jeff Miller joining you. Since you are quite the food expert, perhaps you could give him some tips on fine dining in the Bay area?
Tommy through seven and pitching strong!
Can anyone give me one good reason to waste feliz in a 5 run game when hunter is rolling???
Rangers are still in control of their own destiny. They have been resilient thru tough losses and injuries and that is the best we could have hope for. Now comes the decisive week of the season if LAA losses the Boston series then we could be atop the west by next monday given that we take care of bussines at home over the next seven days.
I agree, Tom B. I questioned when the Rangers signed him as the “Ace” and he has pitched about what I thought he would do.
Ever since the Rangers signed him, I had hoped that a true no. 1 would emerge from the farm. Perhaps that’s why it’s hard for me to forget about some of the early JD trades.
Milly would be a good 3rd or 4th starter.
Buck – and just 81 pitches. Again, given the circumstances right now, if he goes all the way, this is the signature performace of the year, along with Byrd’s DH last week in Cle.
Thanks for the updates, guys!
Hunter is at 81 pitches. He comes out for the 8th.
One thing I really love about Murphy is the way he works the count -even if he strikes out.
@Buck, I’m not sure that a true ace could have been homegrown prior to this year. I think it is obvious that Mike Maddux goes above and beyond to help make his pitchers successful. If Volquez, Danks, et al would have made it to the rotation, chances are they would have been average pitchers at best.
Look at Nelly go!
This is about the most blase rout I think I’ve seen them put on recently…
Nelson Cruz is a big league power hitter…just wish he had more chances with guys on in front of him
Hunter even looks bored.
Tommy could get a complete game.
A new wave of dark clouds coming over the park.
have we been selling Tommy Hunter short, by comping him to Rick Helling and Joe Blanton?
Do we need to move that comp up to David Wells (the good David Wells, not the bloated corpse of David Wells)?
I would let Hunter take it to the barn.
@ Tom B – +1 as long as they aren’t hittin him, leave him out there.
That’s 93 pitches for Hunter through eight. His career high in innings; high for pitches is 104.
LOL @ bloated corpse of David Wells. He sealed his fate when he wore the Bambino’s hat in a game.
If possible, I would play these guys as soon as possible. They are beat down and looking at missing their day off. They will mail it in later tonight. If rain comes and stays, I would make it a noon start of a Day-Night DH.
Get them while they’re not…..
@Jack Daddy: I think Tommy’s got great potential, and he’s pitched great this year. I’m not sure that I would compare him to Helling. Helling was a pretty good pitcher, but he had a propensity to give up the long ball. If this year is any indication, Tommy Hunter will write his own book.
@Ryans Dad: DVD were hopefuls as well as Hurley. I just have never had a warm fuzzy with Millwood as our ace and it’s funner to watch the young pups grow up.
I watched Millwood pitch in Atlanta a few times, and was not impressed w/ his stuff. It hasn’t improved much over the years.
Tommy Hunter new career high – 8 innings!!!
@mr. clean: I’m going to Oakland. The Great One will be manning the fort here.
Hunter back to the mound.
Why has Feliz been warming up???
Looks like Hunter was on his way back out
Now Francisco is up and throwing, lightly so far.
@Jack Daddy: I’d not get ahead of ourselves here. If Hunter matches Helling/Blanton, that would be significant. It’s impossible to project 200-game winners. That’s just setting the bar very high.
@Buck: To demoralize Sea
@Buck, I agree with you about Millwood and the young pitchers as well.
@Buck, Maybe he starts the nitecap.
Crap! Borbon??
Hope Tommy makes it through 9.
I yelling for Tommy! Wonder if he can hear?
You ain’t the only one, Buck; hey, there’s actually a crowd there; who knew?
Thank you Tommy Boy. Great game.
SahWEEEET!! Big Game Hunter!!
Great game.
Hunter pitched a heck game.
Congratulations, Tommy!!!
Complete game on 102 pitches. Fantastic!!!
Tommy Hunter is one heck of a young big league pitcher right now. A 3.33 ERA this season in 15 starts.
Love how he saw the last out and just walked off the mound. Didn’t crack a smile, no gesture, nothing. Like, ‘yeah, I’ve done this complete-game thing before’
That means Seattle can be out of town by midnite if they lay down and we win two.
Can we break the 20 game over .500 barrier in Game #2?
I might have missed this earlier, but will the second game be televised or is it ESPN-blocked?
Currently there are two rookies in Rangers history who have made at least 10 starts and had ERAs of less than 3.33: Steve Comer (3.12 in 1978) and Jim Bibby (3.32 in 1973).
In the last 20 years, the only rookie to have an ERA of less than 3.50 and more than 10 starts? Kevin Brown in 1989. You want a good comparison right now? That’s a good comp. Hunter might not look or throw anything like Brown, but he’s got the results.
The coming rain looks like it may wrap around the East side of Dallas and miss Arlington. I Hope!!!
Seconding Callie’s all for broadcast info — will it be on FSN as well?
80 wins with 21 to play. This could be Magic.
Except for King Felix in the immediate way.
Also, David Wells was a lefty (how did I forget that)?
@Evan: That’s pretty good company. Steve Comer… now that’s a blast from the past. If I recall, didn’t he flame out after about 2 or 3 years?
Kevin Brown was a pretty good pitcher, but from what I understand was a bit of a jerk. I watched in pitch years ago. I loved to watch him pitch. when he kept the ball low, he was tough to hit. Great sinker.
Is the home run pool open again? I’m feeling lucky.
Second game slated for 8:00. Will post second home run pool shortly.
@Buck: Kevin Brown could be a little bit bristly to deal with, though, when he and I worked together in Florida, I had a fine relationship with him.
Also, no homer pool for the second game. Fear we won’t have enough time to get a lineup up and give you time to enter.
I believe the broadcast will be carried on FSN.
@All: disregard my note about homer pool. Jeff feels he can get it to you in time.
Jeff has the HR Pool up.
Buck -
I think you’re right. I remember Comer having one really good year and being kinda blah after that. Hunter pitching that complete game is huuuuuuuge. Bullpen should be in pretty good order for tomorrow now barring anything crazy. Boy we need this next game. Heck, we need all of them. Go Rangers.
Jeff is the man! Way to go the extra mile!!!
QUESTION: Was the last run that Hunter gave up scored an unearned run?
OK, Josh is talking about rookie CG’s at home, right? Because Holland does have a complete game.
@Ryans Dad: Yes, Hunter’s second run was unearned.
…and what about Harrison?
Correction on Hunter’s ERA: 3.23. Better than Bibby, second only to Comer.
I was surprised that the field played well this afternoon. Maybe a factor on the grounder to Beltre that became an E5. I think Washington was pleasantly surprised: “It ended up being in great condition. Dennis [Klein, head groundskeeper] did a great job getting it back together. I didn’t see the field play a part in anything.”
Holland has an 8 2/3 inning pitched game.
Since 2000, there have been three AL rookies to pitch at least 100 innings and have lower ERAs than Hunter’s 3.23 mark:
Francisco Liriano (2.16 in 2006)
Jered Weaver (2.56 in 2006)
Joba Chamberlain (2.60 in 2008)
Hunter hasn’t yet reached 100 innings. But lets say, he allows two earned runs in his next innings, which would push him across the threshold. He’d be at 3.22.
I hate mlb.tv. It is not worth the money.
Holland also had a CG – against the Angels?
@Mike: you’re forgetting his CG shutout against the Angels.
Since Holland’s Sunday afternoon shutout at Anaheim on Aug. 9 when he had eight strikeouts and one walk, he has 17 K’s and 12 walks.
…and Harrison had 2 complete games in May.
@Evan: Your rapport w/ K. Brown might have something to do with a mutual connection to Atlanta?
Might be in and out for the nightcap. Homework to check (4 kids worth), and of course my own work needs to be done at some point. Maybe I can call in sick tomorrow?
Hunter said he got to the park on Sunday morning at 8:45, killed time by playing cards, ping pong (killed in five games by David Murphy) and Super Nintendo’s Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball. “Kind of ironic, I know,” he said. Said having to come out of his last start at Cleveland despite plenty of run support was “very upsetting.” Especially with family and friends having traveled over from Indiana.
Speaking of pitchers who are reported to be jerks and have some connection to the state of Georgia … I was looking over the Rangers pitching since 2000, Kenny Rogers stands out. He’s one of the few pitchers in the last 9 years to post multiple 200 inning years. Too bad he had to go postal on a cameraman.
@Buck: Kenny was only born in Savannah, was raised in Florida. Near Lakeland-Plant City.
Yes, Brown and I could discuss our mutual backgrounds, but he appreciated my smart-alecy sense of humor and that I didn’t take his occasional temper outbursts too seriously. But we didn’t talk about colleges, since he was a Tech man.
If Millwood is pushed back at what point to we begin to hear threats from the Union and Boras, Inc.? If at any point it begins to look like he shouldn’t go back into the rotation what are the likely consequences?
@Evan: I did say “some connection”… Geez!
Had any boiled peanuts lately?
Settle down Holland. Not a good start for the Dutchman.
@ebennett: If Millwood makes another start and doesn’t reach his 180 innings threshold, the Rangers will have no business starting him over the final two weeks of the season.
@Buck: No boiled goobers for me. We can talk shrimp and grits. Country ham. Sweet tea. Real fried chicken with biscuits. But no boiled goobers.
ichiro is ridiculous.
Ichiro breaks the record…. I guess Holland also goes in the record book (sort of Al Downing like).
It is appropriate that his 200th hit was an infield single.
I guess I’m fine w/ Ichiro getting the record off of Holland. If it was Padilla pitching, he would have plunked him and it might have caused an international incident.
In the name of whirled peas… or boiled goobers.
funny how luck tends to even out – both runs scored as a result of 3 meekly hit balls. But, no less than 3 hard hit deep fly balls for outs.
Needed to put Johnson away without runner going to 3B. Don’t want a runner at 3B with Ichiro up. He’ll just poke it to the left side and beat it out almost every time.
Not looking good tonight. Will take 5 to win, I’m afraid and you don’t get 5 vs. Felix.
Holland will good to go 5 and give up 4.
There is too many records in baseball
or should it be, “There are too many records in baseball.
Another one of those moments you get watching TV: Josh Lewin mentions that A’s are already in town and could come to this game. Grieve says could be some here. Lewin says “Hey, Mike Sweeney is a former A, does that count.” Grieve: “No.” But Josh has to keep going. This is a pennant race. There is a time and a place for comedy hour and this is not it.
Not sure who needed that inning more: Derek or Jack Daddy
That’s more like it, Derek!
Evan – I’m telling you. Ticket Fight, you vs. Lewin. Whadya think?
I rewound and replayed that half inning entirely inside the commercial break. Now that is some fine work.
@Jack Daddy: Hope you are wrong this time this is a must win as the first game. I’ll even break rank and root against my venezuelan brothers. Felix ,Franlin and jose.
I don’t usually mind the sac bunt (unlike Norm), but:
1. I don’t think Holland is going to keep them to 2; and
2. If you move a runner up on Felix, he’ll just buckle down with his nasty off-spead/splitter and get Ks.
Not worth it.
@ranger_ve – I agree its must win. Hernandez just scares me. I also hate his stupid hat.
@Jack Daddy: No, tickle fights. I just think this Rangers team and these Rangers fans deserve more from their lead TV announcer, who has a fine voice and does lots of prep. He should spend more time right now discussing the important situations, such as you do, not making silly shticky comments.
Rangers 0-for-3 RISP in the first after Borbon’s single and steal, 0-for-3 RISP in the third after Teagarden’s double.
I can’t believe how long you guys have been doing this. Lord, I hope you get a raise tomorrow.Everybody use those coupons above!!!
@Jeff – I don’t think bad #s with RISP against Hernandez means much. I think that’s just reflective of how much of a bad### this guy is. RISP with less than 2 out don’t mean anything against this guy.
If I need to win 1 game, you can have Peavy, Halladay (though he would be my second choice), Santana, Haren, Hamels, Lincecum. I’ll take Hernandez and win the game 1-0.
Hey, ya’ll…. Lets do Ernie one better…
LETS WIN 2!
I think that for the TV audience, the die-hards will watch regardless. I think Lewin’s bit is for the old ladies they are always wishing well who are in the hospital and the like. Thoughts? (as Holland obviously shows his arm could use 2 weeks rest…)
can we stop this ridiculous, silly, stupid charade that Nelson Cruz is a plus defensive OF?
@Evan – what’s the deal for ppl and parking who want to see 2 games next sunday?
Ok – what do we do to make the baseball gods like us?
And 2-10 is a weird football score.
Oh my gosh.
That was pathetic.
I listen to Eric Nadel. I like Grieve but he does get a bit tiresome. Josh doesn’t get on my nerves, I just prefer the radio option.
@Last: I don’t know of any special deals on parking, but I assume if you park in a Rangers lot before the Rangers game, it’s your space. I don’t think you will be chased out, but I will ask the question.
I’m too far for radio.
Do most of you guys do the same with the Cowboys?
Human sacrifice Callie. That’s what the Red Sox and Yankees do. Or so I’m told.
Yes, Beelsey, that was pathetic.
Can’t explain why – Josh doesn’t annoy me. I like that he keeps it light. I’m wound tight enough during these games as it is. But I can sure see why he would annoy somebody.
@Ryans – hmmm, who can we offer up? I mean, hypothetically of course…
@Jack Daddy: Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for a little shtick. I like it light. I like funny/witty. But in a tight pennant race, in an important game, you shouldn’t have to force things. My issue with Josh is that he too often just dives off into silliness when he can do much better.
@Evan – this week you’ve kinda gotten on Josh. As someone who’s had coaches refuse to talk to me, repeatedly, despite my feeling that I was being fair…. do TV guys fall under “locker room rules?”
I.E. – say what you will, but be willing to look them in the eye and say it?
I disagree, with you, however. 38 hours of rain means that you have to pull a rabbit out of the hat and make it dance a jig to keep people interested. But that’s the broadcaster v. journalist argument – which I’m not sure has been settled.
I’m thinking Millwood or Jones
@Callie: I’m guessing you have someone in mind. Me? I’m too young to offer up my body. Besides, I don’t think the Gods would look kindly.
Josh doesn’t annoy me except when they show him pre-game. He does this weird thing with his face/neck that reminds me of an ostrich. But I agree with Jack Daddy.
Actually, I am listening to internet radio – headphones work great.
Time to make “the King” sweat…. break out the big lumber.
If you listen to Josh on the national games, he rarely ventures very far off into shtick. He’s pretty good there.
@Evan – TY for asking. Ranger parking is like $10… Heard ‘Boys spots are running like $75 minimum.
I’m getting there at like 9:30a to do my radio show from somewhere in the vicinity.
Great observation Callie
Lewin did an oustandig job yesterday on the Laa vs white sox game on fox.No comedy, very focus and informed.
@ Evan – no actually I was thinking more along the lines of coaches/players.
Pray the heavens open up and this game doesn’t make it!
@Last: If Josh asked my opinion on his broadcasts, I’d tell him everything I’ve said here. I think he’s talented, prepared and witty. I just think he sometimes loses the governor on what works and what is just filling air-time. The “former A’s thing” today was just stupid and it took away from the best inning Derek Holland has pitched in a long time. It’s the kind of opportunity for the lead play-by-play guy to really get the analyst to educate the watching crowd.
That’s just my take. And maybe I’m being too critical. Like I say, it’s not that I don’t think Josh is talented. I think he just sometimes he overdoes it. And that tends to come out when you watch him for seven hours straight.
re: Human Sacrifice – sorry, I’d put myself in the running, but I am incomplete after offering elbow ligaments to Zimm back in the day.
I don’t see any raindrops right in front of me, but umbrellas keep opening in the stands.
@Beesley, I live about 4 miles from the stadium and it doesn’t look like that’s a viable option at this point. Maybe Nolan could slip back behind the bleachers again and unplug a section of lighting.
@Evan–I’m totally in agreement with you on Lewin..bear down!!..What’s the scuttlebutt on a new contract for him?
@Ranger_ve: And how do think that went over with Ranger executives – Lewin doing an Angels game in the middle of the pennant race rather than the Rangers?
The Rangers get nothing out of the national FOX games Josh does.
Cowboys parking was $40 SE of rangers park. For preseason anyway.
The 5th is the swing inning. Time for Holland to go 1,2,3 … and time for the Ranger bats to come alive.
We have King Felix exactly where we want him.
I look at it this way. I likes me some Josh and TAG, and I likes me some InsideCorner. There is PLENTY of room in this crazy out-of-the-way place known as Rangers coverage.
At the risk of reporting non-news, Grilli has taken off his jacket and is stretching.
Well, screw me, what do I know. Come on rain
Respectfully disagree, Evan; when Josh did a national Ranger game a couple of weeks back, it was bliss to listen to a national team that actually had a frickin’ clue about the team. So much better than the usual hackneyed misinformation we usually hear out there (the home run derby came immediately to mind)
@Jack Daddy, prophetic
Might as well leave him out there now, we cannot make up this deficit anyway.
@Evan – I don’t get the broadcasts, but I saw plenty of the TV guys on extra innings for several years. And I knew your answer, I just wanted to make sure everyone else did.
I don’t think it’s a secret that I’m a broadcaster around here (or was, now I write commercial copy except for 2 NFL-centric hours on Sunday, which stream…) and the thing you have to remind yourself of time and again is that the hyper-crowd is not your audience.
You’re going to listen/watch no matter what. The difference between renewed contract or not is the people who are passing fans… those who sleep well no matter the outcome of the game.
I did alot of football, and I ordered stuff like this:
Down, Distance, Time, Flavor.
There’s only one Scully who can do all 4 in one sentence. the rest of us give the basics, then expound. For instance, and this is verrrrrrrrrrrry basic. Let me repeat, very basic… but a writer wouldn’t think of saying a football team was moving from left to right, or moving into the hostile end of an opposing stadium, or mention that the team is in the gray shirts with blue lettering and piping and red hats.
I’ve written lots of “WSJ Openings” and columns that missed the point – in fact, I’d think most of the games broadcasters went through J-school at some level, then we almost have to de-train ourselves to realize that when you’re on radio/tv, the pyramid isn’t inverted, but is right side up.
Long story short: Josh is textbook, with a personality. That’s why he’s got 2 top-level teams to pay him.
I’m textbook, but I flavor a game like rice-a-roni.
I haven’t done what would be considered scientific, but I’ve experienced, for more than an inning, most broadcast teams in baseball. Josh isn’t the best, but he’s top 10, and close to top-5 (sans Scully)
Holland just has no command lately.
Cool perspective, LOTR, thanks!
@Juboon – I’d say that a broadcaster can know 3 or 4 teams as well as a die hard.
I.E. – I’ll be you that virtually every MLB national guy talks about the Rangers being a hitting team, when we all know they’re a d and pitching team…
but on a national level – you want to know enough to explain the setting, and convey the emotion… people that are here can intrapolate more, people that are NOT cornerians/romohicans can extrapolate more from JL/TG than they did before the game.
Just missed it on the radio – when is the “red out”?
Well the Seattle broadcast isn’t going much better. Don’t get me wrong I like Dave Niehaus, but I’m ready to fall asleep. And someone needs to go over there to tell them to stay calm, the radar gun is always a bit slow.
Well, over here, I’m the only one still awake after a long weird weekend, and that’s getting iffy. So just in case I doze off, thanks for all the info, y’all!
@Callie: Next weekend vs. Angels.
@Evan–there he goes again “Flip Wilson or Woodrow Wilson”?–and now add the volleyball from “Castaway”….does he even know a game is happening?
PS – I’m just trying to illuminate the difference between broadcaster/writer/fan
I think all 3 have a big place in today’s hierarchy of covering a team.
Too many people rely on, say, Sturm to tell them how the Rangers are. I reality, though, if you treat it like dinner, guys like Jeff/Evan are the protein – what the meal is based from. Guys like Sturm are the spices, capers, etc., Josh is the side dish, the starch, and then Newberg is the Key Lime Pie. All 3 make a good meal, and it’s not quite the same w/o any of them.
OK, that’s my last state of reporting post for the night – sorry, I’m writing like 39 gradschool essays so I can get into 9 schools, and then hopefully teach the next gen of Josh Grant’s or Evan Lewin’s.
That seems odd – a red-out wouldn’t seem to be that impactful against a team who wears red… Or are we trying to be ironic?
I would still take this outing over Millwood’s last outing, all things being equal
I wish someone would knock that crooked hat off his stupid head.
@Jacob – Niehaus is one of the guys who I use as an example when people tell me they want to be play-by-play guys.
I – again, I haven’t had extra innings for a few years – think that he’s one of the guys who still does TV like he’s on the radio, when SEA used to switch teams from TV/Radio midway through games.
PS, the other thing about broadcasting, there’s no backspace. Let’s no one here hit backspace at all for the rest of the night, and see how many simple, stupid, pointless mistakes are made.
@Callie – after the other night and my holier-than-thou comments, know that it’s all I can do to not appreciate the greatness of that comment more because you’re female.
Spot… On.
The 5th has come and gone, but alas there is always that 6th. Borbon starts us off.
can we send everyone up there w/ a take sign? that way, maybe, MAYBE we hit their pen in the 8th?
Elvis for ROY.
@Callie: Red is Red. And, for me, it can be as bold a color as any. The Rangers load up that stadium with 49,000 each day making all kinds of noise and wearing red and it will have the desired effect.
Andrus now has a 15-game hitting streak, equaling the club rookie record of George Wright in 1982 and Jerry Browne in ’87. And it appears Jose Lopez at 1B really likes that Elvis at-bat music.
@Last: I don’t think Felix goes any more than seven. He’s right at 94 pitches right now. I don’t think Wakamatsu would send him out for the eighth with 105-110 pitches.
@All: Let me say that physically, I still feel like I’ve been hit by a truck, but you’ve rejuvenated my spirit by hanging out and talking on a Sunday night.
LOTR- thanks I think?
Kinsler is so deflating these days. There used to be a time that you’d feel pretty good about him being up there but now I pretty much feel he won’t be able to deliver. I wonder if the pressure has gotten to him or what…
@ Evan – I suppose I just think it’d be more impactful with the blue, and since more people have that color, you’re more likely to get compliance…Wait, is this an attempt to sell more merchandise.. Kidding.
As for radio broadcasting, Victor and Evan are top-notch. I will also plug Craig Way and Keith Moreland – Craig Way is great at football, basketball and baseball. Bill Schoening is also excellent.
I also like Steve Busby when he gets a chance.
TAG is good, but he comes off as lethargic at times and Josh injects a bit of energy.
I have to write about something because Kinsler’s DP was really disappointing.
Oops… Victor and Eric.
@Callie – sorry for obfuscation… I meant that it was pretty hilarious.
Especially when you consider the Angels, at one point, were hesitant to alter their look because people may think they’re copying Texas.
Then we forfeited the primary red.
Bias: Tom Grieve is the best color man I’ve ever heard.
Professional broadcaster, non-Ranger fan, unbiased: Tom Grieve is damn good.
For instance, you could be a Yankee fan, and get this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdtn0Z4o8cM
@Callie—Excuse Me!?!?!?!?! Are we going to have to inspect YOUR Kinsler fan club credentials? That’s too funny..you get me in and then you turn..what did I do wrong?
LOTR – I actually got that part, it was the other part I didn’t get… I didn’t realize you were being holier-than-thou the other night. Now, if you were Evan, apologizing to me for highlighting my overuse of emoticons, that I would understand.
“FiFi,” as the Mariners call Felix Hernandez, comes into the seventh with 94 pitches. He has thrown at least 100 every start since mid-May with a high of 117 twice in June.
@Alan – oh crap, I didn’t realize you were still on the blog tonight!! No, really, I was not trying to bag on Kins (backpedaling). I was just saying how I wonder if something is wrong with my favorite player!!
Can’t wait for MY to get back.
@Callie—backpedaling is legal…I think he’s playing tired (but he’s still EXCELLENT on the bases)
We’ve got a baserunner! 2 out rally??
Now, Grieve talking about his Fantasy Football team and wishing that he had Tony Romo. Well, this really bugs me. And here’s why:
I’m in his league. I’m playing the team with Tony Romo in the opener. I’m going to lose. Despite having 121 points and my QB (Phillip Rivers) still to go.
So, there. Self-indulgent post of night.
Also, the great one, Jeff Miller deserves a whole bunch of credit for spending more than 12 hours at the park tonight. Especially, since I bailed. Here’s to Jeff!
Mark Lowe is warming.
@ least you aren’t the Aggie homer that drafted Marty B in the first round, right?
Thanks Jeff Great One Miller!! You’ve done a great job today!
Final, final thought:
Journalists are trained to give readers what they need to know. Broadcasters are trained to give people a fun time experiencing the game.
Ignoring matters of social importance for now, I’m scared of the day when people like Evan and Jeff who are taught to seek the importance of each game, independent of what you want to hear are relegated to obscurity in favor of those who are trained to talk to you about what you want to discuss.
That’s the gravitas of this here blog – a model for giving both sides has to come into a fiscally practical existence in order to keep the checks and balances from being unbalanced and bounced.
In short: What Evan and Jeff do is important, what Josh does is fun. Without the former, the latter loses context.
@LOTR—I think that’s a very insightful opinion but I’m not smart enough to be on a blog where “gravitas” is tossed around
If there was ever the proper time for a miraculous Rangers comeback, the time would be now.
In (one of) my fantasy leagues where I have Romo I’m KILLING! However, my wife, who I just gave a list to during the draft and said “Follow the list” Is beating EVERYONE in the league by 40 points.
She got Peterson, Calvin, Moss in the first 3 rounds. That’s right – Moss hasn’t played, and she’s still beating everyone in the league handily.
Looks like Doug Mathis will pitch the ninth.
@alan – I tried to counter-act it by saying “this here blog.”
@LOTR–is it safe to say “this here blog got big gravitas”?
@Last – To each his own on the broadcast lot. Not sure why I tune one out and tune one in. I like Josh, just in small doses.
for my high brow moment of the night, we need to average 2.5 runs in the next two innings. I suppose all of that algebra homework is paying off.
@Last: Thanks for your perspective. What we are trying to do on InsideCorner (at least for the moment, since the web keeps evolving is this):
1. Provide the first beat/blog in the country that provides full-time coverage just like you would find in a newspaper. We’re independent and we travel, two things that make us unique.
2. Provide news and information on the Rangers, first, but also on other D/FW sports teams that other outlets don’t produce.
3. Tell interesting stories with good writing.
4. Create a community where fans/readers/commentors can help direct the coverage and where they can get answers to the specific questions they ask.
5. Make covering D/FW sports “cool.” Offer balanced analysis without getting caught up too much in histrionics or circus acts (see the T.O. era). We love sports. We love bringing them to you. But we also know that as important as this may be to all of us – it ain’t life or death. This place should be fun and passionate. And you are the folks who have dictated that approach.
Thanks again.
@Buck—if you think dividing 5 by 2 and getting 2.5 is algebra, I think you missed the long division part of 3rd grade..but you got “gravitas” buddy
One quick disclaimer before the night gets away: Evan provides you Rangers fans a tremendous resource in terms of expertise, analysis and perspective. I provide just an extra set of eyes and ears when he’s here and fill in on the basics when he isn’t. That said, on to the ninth.
Evan—you should call in sick more often..this place turns into a love fest for you…I’m sure Andruw Jones will put his 2 cents worth of love in at any minute now
Bakersfield winning 3-0 in bottom of 8th.
@Last of the Romohicans
I live in the northwest so when the Rangers play the M’s I get to watch the M’s broadcast. They still switch halfway through the game, which is kind of interesting. Not sure how I would feel if the Rangers did a similar format. Though I have liked the appearances of Mark McLemore during the game.
@alan – Dang. I need to recheck that homework. No wonder my kids aren’t doing so well in school.
@last no way josh is top 5……..well not if you’ve seen a giants broadcast and then the post-game all four are better……but then that’s a matter of taste i would think…..
@buck–there are lots of folks on here who have the “gravitas” to help you and your kids…avail yourself of your Cornerian friends and I’m sure you’ll wind up with valedictorians–
@Evan – I think I’ve grown to take what you do for granted (punish-comment intended). Since the internet has been readily there for me, I’ve read you about the Rangers. Sometimes first, sometimes after TR – but have always read your words.
I read bloggingtheboys.com (note: I wrote for them for a brief time when it was theboysblog.com) and many other Cowboy-centric sites. But the best single piece I’ve read this year, (as a fan) was Sturm’s “Romo Manifesto.”
I’m probably talking out of school when I say I talked to MJH back around the New Year when he told me about something that was unfolding and turned out to be Inside Corner.
Perhaps I’ve thrown too many darts tonight, so I will say this:
I went to the first Newberg Night. I went to the second. I went to the 4th. I once said “You can be a Rangers fan and not read Jamey, but you can’t be a good one.”
Now, I’ll add this site to it. Read the DMN, JDN, and all the others (BBTiA is getting good) and know that there’s only one where I comment/discuss topics on a regular basis (now and then I’ll add something to the DMN, but I consider myself an honorary cornerian).
re: 5.: there’s an epidemic in sports media (and I withdraw any distinction I made earlier) that adds too much emphasis to what’s happened lately. Every radio host I council, I tell not to over do the hyperbole. Sports talk radio is GREAT at extrapolating the future from an individual moment. Essentially – if you weren’t fair, and by fair, I mean not equating them with life of death (or running “rams, dude;” “coachable” into the ground) and still treating them as things that matter – I wouldn’t be here.
You know, as do I, that there’s 3 billion ways for me to utilize my free time; from a schedule that includes being production director for 2 radio stations, being a husband, hosting an NFL Pregame show (WOOO! My guilty pleasure), taking Calculus, Env. Economics, Media Ethics, Magazine Writing, Media Ethics and Broadcast Management; yet I like to enter the convo and debate here.
THIS is the website that I visit first, and last —-and inbetween when there’s posts.
@Just – what’s the list? PS – I don’t include pre/post game in any talk – Pro or Fan hat, whichever I wear – Renner is a beating to my brain.
losing 2 of 3 to the lowly mariners is the final fork i think……having millwood and holland do their thing again is the final disheartening blow………but tommy hunter is a beast……..
Josh is pretty high on my list….. Though tonight I think we needed Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker). Everyone looked flat.
@Jeff – I agree about Evan, but flat out disagree with your interpretation of your input. Your words carry as much impact with me as do EG’s. Not Bob’s though – he’s on radio, so he’s OBVIOUSLY more important.
(minus the radio-centric comment, Jeff – I don’t think anyone here treats you as the sub who we blow spit-balls and throw paper at.)
@jacob – Uecker is the guy who I use as an example to guys to be entertaining. He’ll mention the count when it gets to strike 3, but if Josh puts the game behind context (or maybe game behind context behind ‘gravitas’), then Bob puts the game behind Sarcasm, context and entertainment.
He does lots of great things, but if you listen to him, and close the PC and TV – I don’t think you know more about the game.
well when jon miller is the post game i add him to the list…….far superior to anything i’ve heard on the rangers network…..and i can’t believe there aren’t 2 others in all mlb than wouldn’t be ranked ahead of josh……or is it that bad in other cities?
@Last – I second your post. There are other blogs and Rangers info out there, but this site beats them all in my opinion. Excellent insight and info for those of us who can’t get enough of the Rangers.
I also enjoy Evan’s commentary. I always have – even when he was with the paper. This blog is awesome because it’s more Evan. I have been a long-time fan.
I’m out for 2-nite. The day had much promise, but was ended by too much King. We’re still in it in Sept. What more could you ask?
@Last of the Romohicans – Couldn’t agree more, that’s why I brought him up. I would have liked to have forgotten there was a really sad baseball game going on. He seemed like a good choice.
but if you try to find a blog out there that follows your mlb team then this is the top blog bar none…….most teams have no “professional” live game blog and almost none have journalists with evan’s credentials blogging about them………
@Buck – this hits the middle between JDN and DMN – not a fan, but w/ resources.
@Buck – at the DMN, (and correct me if I’m wrong —— or not entirely accurate) Evan was limited. I knew he liked UGA and Buffet, but beyond that he had to just go 5 graphs, then the questions (for the newsletter – beyond that it was inverted pyramid, inverted pyramid, inverted pyramid) here, it’s somewhere between. We get the personality, without it affecting judgement – which is what I threw out as the model for the site earlier, only now in clearer english.
@Last: The Rangers coverage is better here than at the DMN – no offense to those guys but it’s true.
The nature of the blog format allows for more frequent posts. The Cornerians also share good insight and info as well. The DMN doesn’t do that.
When I need a fix, I will sometimes binge on Jamey but it’s a once a month type of thing. The hang over lasts that long.
LSB is also good, but it has a different personality. The daily links are OK, but I don’t like to read half of the guys they link to so it’s a waste.
Enough love for Evan. I am out. I actually have some real work to finish up.
I don’t read LSB. I get the respect that the site gets, but I feel that the bias there-in of the site is too much.
I give Adam Morris credit for finding a viewpoint that was under-served, but I feel it lacks the perspective of human nature that would validate it.
@Last – I absolutely agree on the prior DMN gig. Very limited, but it was the best thing out there at the time.
This is a new format, and obviously I enjoy it. It combines several elements that are not unique but the combination is unique.
OK … now, it’s time to finish the work that pays the bills.
One Last comment for Last… I reread your 10:34 post and I am probably one of the few that got the “coachable” comment. Tim did run it into the ground. The undercurrent of negativity is there. You don’t need to be pumping sunshine everyday, but just be fair and let the readers slash and dash.
The papers are in a tough spot. Their readership is decreasing, revenues are decreasing and their relevance can certainly be questioned going forward.
The opportunities are there, but the innovation seems to be lacking. The DMN will have a hold on the DFW area for local news, but they could be more.
Enough procrastination…
I want MORE from the papers… I don’t mind them being negative. Honestly, if anyone else had defended them after the last Philly game, I’d say they were pandering.
I’d say – Fans find the wound, papers treat it, other fans poke it…. DMN goes ‘deadspin’ on it too much and tries to poke it to get a reaction.
