Post-Game Show: A’s 9, Rangers 0

Story of the Game
RHP Scott Feldman, searching for his 17th win and his eighth in a row, took a one-hit shutout to the sixth inning Monday, then ran smack into a brick wall.

The Rangers tired lineup, which sat through four rain delays in the previous eight day, hit the wall much earlier.

It combined for one ugly loss that eliminated any remaining margin for error on the nine-game homestand against AL West opponents. The loss was the Rangers third in four games on the homestand and dropped them 4.5 games back of Boston in the AL wild card. They remained six back of Los Angeles in the AL West with 19 games remaining.

After allowing just one hit through the first five innings, Feldman retired just four more hitters. The first run scored on a swinging bunt but Feldman complicated matters by allowing consecutive two-out doubles to Ryan Sweeney and Kurt Suzuki before escaping the inning. He couldn’t escape the seventh, however. He loaded the bases before being removed with one out. RHP Jason Grilli allowed all three inherited runners to score.

Offensively, the Rangers did nothing against Tomko. The journeyman – he’s with his ninth major league team in 13 seasons – pitched the second shutout of his career. He allowed just five hits. Tomko took advantage of a Rangers lineup that looked tired and lacking in energy.

Three Up
• SS Elvis Andrus extended his hitting streak to 16 games, setting a new club record for rookies.
• It did not rain during the game.
• Kanye West didn’t show up.

Three Down
• The Rangers managed just five hits against RHP Brett Tomko, who entered the game with one shutout in 265 starts. He began the day with the second-most starts in major league history among pitchers with one or fewer shutouts. It was Tomko’s first complete game since 2005.
• RHP Jason Grilli retired just one of the four batters he faced and allowed all three runners he inherited to score. Since returning from the DL on August 22, Grilli has allowed opponents a .348 batting average, a .462 on-base percentage and compiled an 11.81 ERA.
• OF Marlon Byrd has hit a little something of a lull after carrying the team for a week. Byrd, 0-for-3 on Monday, is hitless in his last 11 at-bats and just 2-for-15 since the Rangers returned home.

Stat o’ the Game
19: Consecutive hitless at-bats with runners in scoring position in the Rangers last four losses. They are 1-for-22 with men in scoring position in their five losses in September.

Player of the Game
Really no sense in even voting tonight. Let’s make it Oakland RHP Brett Tomko by acclimation.

Good point, Evan. They do look tired. Perhaps pressing a bit, too. Maybe if this rain finally clears out, the Rangers can make one more charge up the hill. Starting to look like the most realistic playoff shot is to reel in the Angels, so, Go Red Sox! Oh, and Go Rangers, or what happens in Boston may not matter.

This was pretty disheartening. I’m sticking it out for the rest of the season, but it’s hard to keep the positivity in my own brain.

Not saying I don’t believe in this team anymore, but I’m starting to wonder if we’ve seen their best effort already.

I know he had to be gone, but how much did dropping Padilla AND NOT REPLACING HIM WITH ANYTHING hurt this club? He ate innings and could have good stuff. . . better than what we’ve seen from most of the starters in the last few weeks.

We subtract from the rotation (which is a clubhouse “add”) and add nothing on the field.

Anaheim added Kazmir just when the Rangers started to think they could catch them in the West.

I would say this is a tired team in a lot of ways: Long Season, Bad weather and general aches and pains, MY and Ham gone. I just say thanks for a good, entertaining season and if it goes on, fine, but what we have seen has been great.

  • stemyn

I do not blame the Rangers for not getting Kazmir. Not with what he was doing this year, his contract, and the arms we have in our system.

I too am finding it hard to be positive. I do not see us catching Boston, but still feel LA is possible. Just because of the games left. Boston has the likes of KC, Cleve, Balt, and Toronto. Not exactly giant killers.

True we have Oakland and Seattle, but Seattle does not fall in the same catagory of KC, CLeve or Balt.

Don’t give up yet. The Sox and Angels aren’t that good. Believe me, stranger things have happened; I lived in St. Louis in ’64.

  • Jim

@Tom B: their season has been no longer than the Red Sox, Angels, or any other teams’ season

  • Beesley

But the Rangers are doing it with a bunch of kids who’ve never played this much in the majors. In this area. I think they’re to be commended and it definitely is a great thing to think we’ll be a little bit older next year. As long as no one seriously does damage to their arm in this last month, I’m all for riding this puppy out.

It’s so easy to look back and second guess the Padilla thing, but hey it is what it is. This team does have the look of a tired team. You cannot discount the effect that the losses of MY and JH have had on the psyche of the team. I think this team is a lot better off without Padilla if he was as much of a cancer as has been reported.

Also, although it is almost romantic to wax about what the team might have done and who it might have picked up, I actually like the fact that we did not disrupt the chemistry by bringing in a “contract” that might or might not pan out long term. This is an exciting group of players who will only get better. This year has been a great ride.

So Evan, how does the team get their energy back on offense? Any new changes to the line-up coming?

Also, where there’s smoke there’s a fire. Is there some kind of Padilla-esque back story (off the field issue, bad guy in the room, attitude) going on with Hank Blalock that is not being shared with the fans?

He’s been unnecessarily buried by the team and now they need somebody like the player Blalock was last September or in April, May or July of this year.

  • Will

Whatever happens the rest of the way i am and always will be a fan of this team, they played their hearts out this year, they were entertaining to be sure. Go Rangers!
