Story of the Game
Not even the return of Michael Young – albeit temporary – could snap the Rangers out of a malaise that is threatening to scuttle the importance of a showdown with Los Angeles even before the Angels arrive in Arlington Friday.

The Rangers lost for the third straight game and save for a solo homer by RF David Murphy, they might have suffered their third consecutive shutout. As it is, the team has scored just one run in its last 28 innings. The Rangers, who have lost three straight, had gone 22 scoreless innings before Murphy’s fourth-inning homer. The team record for consecutive scoreless innings is 28, set in 1972.

It’s not like the Rangers didn’t have chances. They were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Rangers are 2-for-28 with RISP in five games on this homestand. They are 0-for-19 in the last three games.

Young’s return lasted only one at-bat. He felt some tightness in his left hamstring during his first at-bat. He landed heavily on his front foot on a check-swing on the second pitch he saw and removed himself after the at-bat. He’s not likely to play on Wednesday, but hopes to return for the series against the Angels. The question is whether that series will still remain important. The Rangers have missed out on consecutive chances to cut into the Angels’ six-game lead in the West. In the meantime, they’ve fallen 5.5 games back in the wild card race, the largest margin they’ve faced all year. And with no games remaining against Boston over the final 18 dates of the season, it would seem the wild card is now lost.

Three Up
• The pepper steak in the media dining room was tender and delicious.
• If that’s No. 1, you know we’ve got nothing for No. 2.
• 3B Michael Young returned to the lineup earlier than expected as the DH, but …

Three Down
• But Young’s return lasted only one at-bat before he determined his hamstring was too sensitive to allow him to play.
• The Rangers committed three errors, 3B Esteban German, C Ivan Rodriguez and LHP C.J. Wilson.  They have made 15 errors in September and have raised their season total to 94. It seems almost certain
• RHP Brandon McCarthy was wild and ineffective. He lasted just three-plus innings and was cahrged with four earned runs. McCarthy walked three, all of them in a 34-pitch second inning. After getting the first two outs, he wlaked No. 8 hitter Daric Barton, then allowed a single and two more walks.

Stat o’ the Game
6.71: Composite Rangers starting rotation ERA over the last 10 games. The rotation ERA has risen from 4.35 to 4.50 in that time.

Player of the Game
Not much in the way of good candidates, but here’s what we’ve got to offer: RHP Willie Eyre (1 IP, 0R, 2K); 3B Esteban German (2-for-xx), RHP Doug Mathis (2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K); RF David Murphy (2-for-4, HR). Vote here.

Monday’s Player of the Game: Oakland RHP Brett Tomko (By acclimation).

what suckatude. no offense had pitching issues and 3 errors. All around game. This is the old Rangers not this years Rangers.

On a lighter note, I saw Evan in the dugout after the interview with Babe and Nolan for TV.

This Rangers edition is not ready to play for real results late in the season. They should be better next season with an extra year for some and a shedding of some old blood.

I’m the biggest Murphy apologist there is. . . and I loved his home run, but swinging on 3-0 with two on against a lefty and Cruz standing on deck kind of erased that for me.

I’ll vote for Mathis. I guess.

    “Keeping Up w/The Jones”
I have to think the contrast of the two venues for sporting events side by side in Arlington leaves Rangers fans feeling slighted or 2nd class. I thought my car was fine until my neighbor got a new one. He was wah his during the day and everyone would stop by and comment how nice it looked. I had to go out near midnight so no one would ask just how old mine was. I started parking mine around back because the sparkle of his was blinding me when I went out to run errands. TBPiA is great when it doesn’t rain or the sun doesn’t shine oh, and the temp doesn’t hit 95 or so. Nobody wants to come by when I wash my car. They all flock to my neighbors when he even gets out to run down the street. It’s danged discouraging.

The horses are stumbling a bit down the stretch. Hopefully, the site of the finish line will inspire some tired bodies. Rumor has it, that the Rangers are contemplating activating the front office to inject some life. Nolan takes the mound this weekend, and JD will be fetching the lumber after every Ranger at-bat. If that doesn’t provide a spark….

Sadly, I think the season effectively ended after the 9-0 loss on Monday.

It’s been thorougly disappointing to see the Rangers piss away their chances at the Playoffs with shaky defense, poor pitching and even worse hitting over the last 10 games. (There, just had to rant!)

That being said, they are WAY WAY WAY ahead of where anyone projected they would be at the end of 2009. It has been an outstanding season all the way around. The big question now: Do we sit Millwood so we don’t have to pay him $12 mil next year or do we trot him out there. I say sit him. Your take?

  • Beesley

If you’ve got guys that are pitching better than him right now, they might have a case to do so. But do they? Do they have a legit replacement? That’s 1/7th of our team’s payroll. That’s tough.

  • Ranger_Rick

Personally I would like to see Millwood sit and not come back next year. However, team management, I don’t think, will do that.

This team has been so resilient this year and has proven they can contend into Sept. Yes they are WAYYYY!!! ahead of projections, given this experience and subsequent disappointment I think they come out swinging, pitching and playing sharp next year they have a great chance to take it to the last game and hopefully into Oct. When we get to Sept. next year I believe we will see a better more energized team.

Remeber most of these guys are in their first full major league season and the long season is wearing on the youngsters. It’s been fun and I hope we have a few more fun games to watch this year, or at least this weekend.
