8:07: The home run pool is awaiting your visit. Are you ready?
9:14: We are having some lightning/storm-related technical issues, so bear with us.
9:19: The Rangers decision to start Kevin Millwood tonight can’t be interpreted in any fashion other than this: The club apparently doesn’t believe it could win a grievance that would be filed on his behalf if he was shut down at this point and fails to reach 180 innings. Even if the Rangers want Millwood back – and it’s worth noting that it is Sept. 21 and his ERA remains below 4.00 for the year – it’s pretty clear that $12 million is not 2010 market value for a pitcher of his class. With the Rangers essentially out of the race, using any other younger pitcher (Dustin Nipper or Guillermo Moscoso come to mind) would seem to be more worthwhile than running a tired Millwood out there. It doesn’t make much sense to start Millwood right now. But the club apparently doesn’t have any other options.
9:28: C Jarrod Saltalamacchia had Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery today to remove a rib. All went well (it should have, considering the practice surgeons have had with performing the procedure on Rangers players). He should be ready for spring training. … Also, on the Thoracic Outlet beat, LHP Matt Harrison, who had the surgery earlier this summer, pitched an inning in the instructional league today.
10:33: Kevin Millwod reaches 180 innings with a double play grounder from Mark Ellis in the fifth inning. He’s now locked in his contract option for 2010.
10:37: Folks, you may have to bring this one home on your own. My internet keeps failing at home tonight. AT&T going to be getting a little ringy-dingy in the a.m.. I’ll try to stick with it, but this is quite frustrating as those of you who have dealt with it before understand.
Is there any good reason why Borbon is not in CF for the rest of the year?
@rob m: Borbon is not a good defensive outfielder yet. I think he’s got a better chance for success at leftfield.(for now)
Evan…are you in Oakland?
Boy is gonna be fun to read Bob’s cowboy blog after losses this year. it’s just brutal lol.
@alan in SA: No. I am in front of my TV right now.
@EvanGrant: Evan do you think we’ll see Feliz make a start before the season is over. I Would like to see him pitch at least four inings straight before the offseason.
Evan – gonna toss this out now and probably start a firestorm on the board tonight.
There was talk on the board late last night, perhaps fueled by something in the media, of a Millwood for Bradley trade with Chicago eating a lot of Bradley’s salary. Without getting into my feelings on it, what’s your opinion of that possibility?
could we really really get milton for millwood with the cubs paying most of milton’s salary…….now that would be WONDERFUL…….but if he comes back i think they should name the press box elevator in his honor just so kc understands where we stand when they come to town……..
Be careful of what you wish for…
@Ranger_ve – If we were still playing for anything, then I’d agree with you. But at this point, I’d have no problems letting Borbon get some work in at CF.
The better answer I think to that question is that it probably takes another bat out of the lineup. But who knows.
i seriously would LOVE to see milton back……ken macha talks about how he was the best influence he had when the a’s were in the playoffs…….i’d love to have a player so intensly focused on winning…….i don’t care if he gets along with anyone as long as he wins…..and if they don’t get along with him then i might think it has more to do with their thin skin………let’s get back to the basics…..winning is everything to quote mr lombardi………
@KJ: We are playing for next year and you need to protect your rookies from getting exposed to bad situations. Specially if there’s no substantial reward from it. Just my opinion.
KJ – picking up on the thoughts from earlier today on the other board, I agree that millwood’s still got some innings in him, whether here or elsewhere. I just don’t think trading him for Bradley betters either team.
Jack Daddy – If you chime in tonight – I can’t find anything on Gammons comments on a possible Millwood/Bradley trade – was that on TV or written? If it was written, can you provide a link? Olney brought it up in a chat, but as “PURE SPECULATION” only (his words, not mine).
Been a long day on the East Coast, so I won’t be staying up tonight. A couple thoughts….
Season = not over for me until the fat lady sings
Milton Bradley = burned bridge when he said he didn’t play when he could have last year. You want that in your clubhouse?
Inside Corner = makes the season a little more enjoyable. Even now.
and bradley would be one of the smartest guys on the team and actually give fans with a brain someone to converse with…..not that that is a requirement for playing mlb or being a mlb fan…………
I wouldn’t mind Borbon finishing the year in center either. Get him the experience. At some point he’ll need to get that experience and I would like to see him as our every day CF if not next year then in 2011. Next year, could platoon him with Hamilton and Byrd (if we resign Byrd).
As for Milton, yes he may have been good in the clubhouse but he was injured as well and missed quite a few games, let’s not foget that. He was injured again this year for the first several weeks of the season, forgot exactly how long, and it will happen again with the injuries regardless of where he is at.
What we need is someone with his spark / fire but who also is up at the plate when needed and not sitting on the d/l or “day to day” because of a mild injury.
yes john i do and totally understand his comments “in context”………replace him for blalock any day……and really think he’s less of a distraction than hamilton……and a lot smarter than byrd…….
@All: In regards to Milton Bradley, I’ve heard the rumors, too. But let me just say this: The Rangers have made it clear that being a reliable and good teammate is a requirement to play for this team. The decisions to cut ties with Sidney Ponson and Vicente Padilla are evidence of that. Bradley falls into that category. He is a Texas State Fair Midway of distractions all by himself.
He was completely unreliable in the second half last season and to bring him back here and let somebody like Marlon Byrd walk away would result in clubhouse insurrection.
KM has thrown 2951 pitches this year, he is #40 overall. He had 2710 last year.So if he makes 3 more starts he will finish this year around 3200 total pitches. My question to the board is. Do you think he was overused this year or is he not as durable and approaching the end?
@Ruffian, It was a comment between Scotch’s during a weak moment of the Cowboy loss. Just something to stir the masses but not them asses. Everybody else just took an 8 second ride on it. Just pointing out the pro’s and con’s of such a potential happening. Do you realize 140,000 fans watched two ballgames in Arlington yesterday?
@Evan – Thank you… very well said. I think many forget that or are willing to overlook that because of his OBP.
he’ll have more games than hamilton? kinsler? young…almost?
bradley 124 games this year last year 126
josh 87 games this year last year 156
kinsler 130 this year last year 121
now at a andruw jones discount why would you not want that bat?
geez all milton did was complain about the fans and kinsler sure as hell has done that…….
@Ranger_ve, 3000 pitches is a first fault indicator. Above that indicates a lack of efficiency. Chris Young who went to San Diego
was the poster child for that. It was figured he wouldn’t last long if his pitch counts didn’t go down. They haven’t and this year has been disastrous. You start seeing a lot of people fall apart approaching 3500. It is the make-up of the modern day pitcher for better or for worse.
9:19: The Rangers decision to start Kevin Millwood tonight can’t be interpreted in any fashion other than this: The club apparently doesn’t believe it could win a grievance that would be filed on his behalf if he was shut down at this point and fails to reach 180 innings. Evening all, I still love them Texas Rangers. Here’s to miracles! Go Rangers!
@JustSaying, Hamilton looked very good with Bradley hitting behind him last season. I’m not for or against. I was just dabating the pro’s and con’s of it as a potential transaction on a two loss night in Arlington. Okay, so it was the Scotch talking. Dang Scots, anyway. Just practicing for the coming Hot Stove league.
Well we can always hope millwood gets torched for 5 or 6 in the next 2 innings…
@Tom B:I don’t know Tom. Verlander has 3562 #1. Sabathia 3408 #2.felix Hernadez 3296 #5. Those are some pretty good guys going above 3000 and still doing good. All I’m saying is that maybe KM is just not as durable as a front of the rotation pitcher should be.
Tom – Yes I do. That’s a bunch and but for a personal and unfortune circumstance we would have been among them, at least at the Rangers game (partial season ticket holder).
Just to define my allegiance, I have followed the Rangers since they were the Senators and the Denver Bears were their AAA farm team when I was growing up. I am and have been a fan for a long long time and would love nothing else in sports than to see the Rangers finally win.
But I also like to sometimes be the straw that stirs the drink and wanted to see what the masses had to say about the “trade”. There is obviously a split in how they feel. I side with Evan on this one. I would love to get Bradley’s talent in here if it could be separated from the rest of the package (attitude, injuries, etc).
@Evan, this conversation between Josh and TAG must be like fingernails on a chalkboard for you.
9:34: So, question of the night: What do you consider the single most significant development for the long-term success of the Rangers from this season?
Without question it has been the emergence of Little E
@Ryans Dad: Only thing that bugged me was the segue that included the line from Josh: “Well, Hank’s not wearing the orange shorts tonight.”
Rookie dress up day is always a topic of conversation, so no issues there.
That’s an easy one for me – bringing along the young talent both on the mound and in the field (broad answer but I like the young guns).
Just thought it’s worth mentioning that Bradley led the A.L. last season in OPS.
@EvanGrant: For me is the offfield changes. #1 Nolan Ryan as president.
#2 Mike maddux as pitching coach.
#3 Tom Hicks broke and wanting to sell.
I’ll bet the Rangers are wishing they had set that innings pitched bar a little higher?
@Evan..I’m not sure if this qualifies as “single” but the big story of 2009 to me is how fast the youngsters came. The #1 Minor League system paid off a year earlier than expected and have to have learned a lot going forward.
EVAN: The answer to your question of the night has to be the development of the young pitchers. Hunter & Feldman for sure. Holland and Feliz are hopefully not far behind. To me, this is the difference between this team and 04′s. There were a lot of good young players on that 04 team, but we went five years before finishing over .500 again because the good youngsters in 04 were position players, not pitchers.
yes he added a lot of protection for josh and i have to think if josh thinks milton can protect his ABs then josh and the others would/should say hell yes……..is he going to have injuries….well hell yes but geez 126 games with what he produced…..and i think wash is the perfect manager for milton…….
i actually think kinsler, young and josh all looked better when milton was batting clean-up……..it’s been pretty evident all year that that spot was empty for us……
Dont the rangers want millwood to vest?
If not he is a FA and walks in the offseason.
If he vests we can still trade him in the offseason or at the deadline next year.
@ob–what do you think anyone would give you for Millwood?
@obagain: If Millwood vests, the Rangers might be able to trade him for a limited return, but they’d still have to eat a significant amount of salary to get a deal done. What’s better:
To simply walk away?
Or to be on the hook for $12 million with a slight chance of getting a minimal return?
#1 mike maddox as pitching coach “long term success”
i would say getting rid of hicks but next owner might be even worse………
Have you guys forgotten him saying he didnt really play all the time because the team wouldnt give him a long contract?
The guy is a bum and I dont want anyone like that around the young guys.
wonder if the a’s will stop play when millwood vests tonite and give him the game ball? that $12 million ball?
@EvanGrant: Evan what’s the bottom line on the rangers as a business ,in you opinion are the Rangers a good investment for a prospective buyer.
led the al in ops……..very bad influence……
I would have traded millwood at the deadline this year, I know they couldnt but that would have given us the best return.
If the rangers didnt give millwood the start he would have won the grievance and we would pay him anyway.
I would try to get 1 decent high prospect and 2 low level arms, that is doable if we pay most of the salery.
justsaying, he told us flat out he didnt care about the team, he has never cared about any team he has been on.
We can find a bat, no need to take on trash.
i never heard wash have anything negative to say about milton…….
The Rangers are down to four outs before that $12 large goes out the window.
@obagain you just don’t want to take the medicine you need to win……i believe that is what milton had to say to some of the cubs fans and he would probably say the same to you so i understand your hesitation…….me, i’m tired of losing and i’d be happy to see him…….
@Ranger_ve: Hard for me to make a definitive call on what kind of investment the Rangers are. I do believe that on a year-to-year basis, they’ve either broken even or made a profit since 2004. The problem is an enormous amount of debt, part of which are deferred payments (many of which are going to players no longer here). Yes, the Rangers are still on the hook for the Alex Rodriguez contract. That’s what I’m saying. A new owner is going to have to take on a lot of deferred money and look at it as bad debt. He’d be paying off Hicks’ promises and getting nothing for it. But if the sale price ends up being right around $500 million (Hicks would like $600), I’d say, yeah, it stands to be a very solid investment. There is a manageable current payroll and a talented nucleus here that likely means decent attendance and offers the promise of post-season revenues.
I think the most positive development has been Young Pitching. There are a lot of good arm and nowhere for some of them to go. Other teams will start raiding the minor league teams using Rule 5 if something creative is not done. The speed of Andrus and Borbon has been great. Andrus has got to cut the errors but he makes so many sparkling plays it’s forgivaable for a while. Borbon might suffer C Davis Syndrome and he has to learn to run the bases with that speed and he has a weak arm. If he can’t hit he doesn’t have a chance. Both he and Andrus need to work on bunting for hits.
I have to agree with others that this years biggest development is the young pitchers and Elvis… With a long term shortstop and possibly above average pitching going forward this team is poised to contend for several years.
Also the farm is still well stocked, maybe not #1 this winter but should still be in top five.
The only real question right now that has developed may be catcher. With Salty questionable due to the surgery and recovery of arm strength, if he goes like Blalock did then we lose a catcher because there won’t be any base stealers thrown out by him. Teagarden needs more time in minors to develop if he ever does. He may end up a very late bloomer. And we don’t know about Max Ramirez yet because of his injury setback. So with that where do you go for catching help?
Sign Pudge for next year and see how Teagarden goes. If not good then maybe trade for a AAA catcher next year or a good young ML ready catcher the year after.
@Evan Grant: Thanks Evan that makes it clear. It is all about the final price tag. So in my limited business experience whoever wants to buy this club is going to wait as long as possible(to see if Hicks situation becomes worse) to make a move.
How will you feel when we face the angels next your with the pennant on the line but milton backs out because he doesnt want to face the pitcher?
We have plenty of depth in the minors to go after a strong bat.
What is miltons excuse this year? The cubs gave him the money and a long deal and he stinks, not to mention he is suspended for the rest of the year for saying he hates playing for the cubs.
I think the boys are a little chapped at how the A’s spanked them in Arlington last week.
1. have been REALLY depressed the last 5 days. Not because we aren’t making the playoffs (I really never expected to), but because the season was in essence over (and I wanted an excitign last 2 weeks). That being sai, I’ve pouted and gotten over and am really just enjoying myself tonight watching a baseball game for the reasons why I love baseball — its just a good game.
2. A wonder what pressure removed will do for the team.
3. Really encouraged by shots Holland yukking it up in dugout. Was worried about his pysche. Take a look at BBTiA today. Good piece on Holland. 1 of 68 pitchers in ML history (last 127 years?) to pitch 100 innings in first year and K over 7 per 9 innings. When you then rank those pitchers by K/BB ratio, he falls around 28, just behind Lincecum. The others on the list are mostly pretty elite. Moral – when you miss bats like does, and not walk batters like he doesn’t, you have a GREAT chance to be special. Don’t give up on the kid. He’ll be special.
4. Ruffian – Gammons didn’t mention Bradley for Millwood, but in his chat predicted Bradley ends up in Texas. Evan – are we seeing some revisionist history? I know he annoyed mgmt, but the team seemed to get along with him. Were the images of him sliding bases in the rain on the tarp a show? I think Michael Young could have a man to man with him, and get him on board. Byrd is a separate story (if the Cubs want to pick up Byrd’s contract, I’m sure we would gladly keep him too).
5. That being said, I don’t think we trade Millwood for Bradley. I think Millwood finishes year strong and we trade Millwood for somebody else, throwing in an Omar Poveda to get somebody to take the salary. Millwood and Poveda for Garret Atkins? I just see Atkins on this team. It makes so much sense, given he’s a power righty that can play 1B, 3B and LF and DH. He NEED A CHANGE OF SCENERY BADLY and would be a good fall back if Davis slumps again and Smoak isn’t ready.
6. Biggest development? Well, I expected this out of Holland, Borbon and Andrus. I’ll say 3rd place, Feliz’s split finger pitch, which has taken his ceiling to a whole new level (its a game changer). 2nd place, Hunter’s development of a 4 pitch reportoire and what looks like the making of a real solid #3 rotation workhorse.
First place, in a cake walk? Feldman’s emergence of what looks to be a staff ace. He’s developed the cutter, curve (BIG TIME) and change to go with the sinker and now looks like a Roy Halladay starter kit. Don’t underestimate the importance of this huge. Pretty dang huge. REally freaking huge.
7. Where are all the Inside Corner regulars? I miss the guys (and gals).
sorry for the typos (I don’t believe in proofing what I write, after doing that all day long in my day job).
where was this play last week… Man, if they did this then, we would still be in the hunt.
It’s too early to tell, but it could be that they are so far back now the pressure to win every game is easing. So now they can relax and begin to hit. Again it is too early to tell, but if the offense takes off the next few days that theory will have a good bit more credibility.
@obagain refer to earlier remark that wash has never had a bad thing to say about milton……sorry but his opinion trumps yours……milton’s just honest and i know that chaps the good ol boys………
@S.Arcasm – see my #2. don’t under estimate this aspect.
no way in hell Hicks finds a buyer willing to start the bid with the number 5. I think its iffy at best (and I say no way) it starts with 4.
Any theories on what happened to kinsler’s swing? He has become a flyout machine.
yes jack daddy the first number is a four……or the price isn’t right…..
Yep, preassure removed is a big game changer… however you also have to remember you can’t get to Oct. without the preassure being there. However, this is a good way for the team to learn how to deal with the preassure and will only benefit them down the line.
Maybe Kinsler has taken up boxing and his coach keeps pusing the upper-cut.
Jack Daddy – I like the thought of Atkins here. I think the change could rejuvenate him and add the power bat the team needs.
and i still have a question on the radio-tv contract…….isn’t that with hicks group and the way he funneled money out of the franchise? what is today’s radio-tv contract worth and can a new deal be put in place? seems a lot of sports deals revolve around that and i don’t remember that discussion here?
Bradley’s also the guy that caught out 2 and tossed it in the stands this year while poseing.
justsaying, please take the blinders off, what manager is going to talk bad about his players?
I am not a big fan of wash either.
What does the good ol boys comment mean?
Will the MLB network do a “live look-in” for the $12 million out next inning?
@Ranger Rick – your point is EXACTLY why I spent the better part of Saturday venting that Rudy J had to go. I’m no expert, but its the same pattern with this offense everytime the pressure is turned up. Its been that way for over 15 years. I LOVE Evan’s analogy that he’s more position coach than offensive coordinator. He doesn’t seem to be strong on the mental approach and do a good job of giving our hitters a plan to take to the plate.
I have no way of verifying whether this is true, but I have heard that opposing teams watch our batting practice and think we are a joke. That we spend the entire time trying to drive everything like its HR derby and don’t work on situation hitting, spraying the ball. Again, I don’t have verified proof (and it seems Ron Washington, Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan would nip that in the bud immediately), but I heard from more than 1 source that both the Padres and Twins remarked about this.
I do know with 100% certainty that Jake Peavy watched us play in person, couldn’t believe they dominated us the way they did (he thought his own team was the worst baseball team he’s ever seen) and said we would be disappointed if he gave up more than 3 hits against this bunch.
Dumb question. Batboys, are they high school kids, and if so, do they travel with the team, or does the home team furnish batboys for each team? Or is it a full time job like an equipment manager and some young guy does it in lieu of going to school?
drum roll for millwood vesting……..ye he……man we’ve signed some great long term deals? anyone? any deal? hmmmmm……those bankers are having a field day today…….
I’ll say this – I thought Millwood was awful the last 2 months as much as anyone. But what he went through wasn’t any different than what Josh Beckett went through this late summer and what Buehrle went though after his perfect game. It happens. Pitchers get dead arm. Could he have worked harded to avoid? Hell if I know. But maybe we don’t pitch his arm off next April/May and see how that goes.
Ron Washington said he wants Bradley back.
@JD – that’s why Rudy’s time has come. Its time for new batting coach blood. If Nolan and JD don’t go get one this off season then we’ll miss the playoffs again next year with a pressure slump just like last week. Also a new offensive coach would correct Kins upper-cut swing and get him to hitting like he was last year. Several otehr players I believe would improve as well.
$12 million out the door!
did you see that smirk on his face when the camera first caught him…
the problem is millwood is at the front of the rotation…….certainly feldman going 5-6 innings ALL year is certainly superior to what millwood did and their total innings are pretty close…….will nolan back off his work’em till they fall off next year?…..in the past it hasn’t taken much to be the rangers #2 so will 2010 be different?
And boom goes the dynamite
@Evan – I know journalists have to balance their reporting against their reputation with their sources, so I understand if you can’t answer this, but has there been something going on in this clubhouse lately?
Perhaps angst over the Millwood situation, Hamilton’s refusal (probably wrong choice of words) to play, Nippert getting yanked, etc? I’m not looking for a scapegoat for the losses, but something “seems” different. Particulary with Ian. I’ve heard things that don’t relate to the team with Ian, so maybe that’s it, but I thought I would at least ask you. I just have that feeling that something has happened that we aren’t hearing about. You know, the kind of feeling you get when you feel like your girlfriend is cheating on you but you ignore it (and it turns out she is)?
10:33: Kevin Millwod reaches 180 innings with a double play grounder from Mark Ellis in the fifth inning. He’s now locked in his contract option for 2010.
@obagain wash has my vote………..
Sure looks like 1st half Millwood dropped in for a visit tonight…
@Jack Daddy: What have you heard about Ian?
@AJM – I agree. I think much more is being made of Bradley and the clubhouse. My 2 thoughts?:
1. if the Cubs are picking up his salary, then bring him on – if he Fs up, release him;
2. if the players don’t like, tell them they should have performed better (say, like work a damm count) and you wouldn’t have had to do this.
@JD- I brought up exactly this same comment about Kins the other day. His attitude just seems different lately, not the happy, playful guy he was 1-2 months ago and earlier.
Seems like something is either bugging him or someone got under his skin somehow he is not handling it well.
Washington makes out the lineup. He has MUCH MORE influence over Kinsler’s upper cut than Rudy. Kinsler has the upper cut because he wants to hit home runs. A new hitting coach wouldn’t have any more chance of turning that situation around than Rudy.
Were there problems with Bradley last year? They seemed to all get along well..he certainly yucked it up at the ASG.
@RF – nothing sinister. Nothing that you or I or any other married guy with a young kid doesn’t go through. Lack of sleep. A wife that spends too much money, etc. But the kind of stuff that might make one seem less joyful and a bit whipped.
wash also said he wants jones back, anyone agree with that?
Someone please show me a clip of Kinsler circa 2008 and this year. THE SWING IS THE EXACT SAME! You loved it when it’s hot…hate it when it’s not. Fine but it’s the same darn swing.
Jones could be back as cheerleader, bat boy, any number of positions that don’t involve having a roster spot on this team.
RF, it is the same swing but it seems the pitchers have found a hole in the swing and ian has not adjusted.
Oh well… bedtime, g’nite ya’ll.
@obagain: OH HOLY CRAP WHAT? Where did he say this…that’s grounds for instant firing. Good thing JD won’t do that. I’m sorry but that almost proves incompetence. Be loyal when it’s worth it but that would be pure idiocy.
@Obagain – I agree with Ranger Fan. I think its the same swing. However, when he’s a little fatigued or distracted, I think he’s just a shade late or under it and you get the pop ups. Look what he’s done everytime he’s come back from a day off or being hurt.
Mechanically, it looks the same to me. Go back and look at still shots (on my website, if you want). His follow through after HRs hasn’t changed. Shoulder down, arched back. Same swing. The guy needs a mental vacation in the worst way.
as a free pinch hitter sure……
@obagain: That’s true. But to hate his “uppercut swing” is stupid. He’s probably had that swing since little league. It’s what got him here. Maybe it should be tweaked but to it’s not like he changed swings to try and hit homeruns.
What the heck was that?
To me, Kinsler looked overweight and a tad bit out of shape this year as compared to years before. I might just be crazy, did anybody else notice that?
The option vests, then an inning later, the shutout is gone. Just a coincidence I’m sure.
jamey just sent out a note mentioning dennis gilbert as a potential buyer for the rangers……what do you know of this evan?
Dang I can’t remember the last time I saw a 93 MPH fastball from Millwood.
@ryans dad – i don’t know about overweight, but i’m sure he’s getting heavier. just look at his age. Late 20s you start put on weight that you didn’t in your early 20s.
Judging by his SB number this year and increased range and reliability at 2nd I wouldn’t say he’s lost a step…
@RF – evidently, his FB hadn’t really lost much velocity (you can’t trust the BPiA guns – they are about 3 mph slow). The problem was his FB, breaking ball and change were separated by about 5 mph, when it should be about 15-20 on those 3 pitches (call it 93, 85, 78). He was around 91-89-87. Hitters could adjust on everything. Deadarm.
He’s not any slower, but maybe he’s having trouble swinging around his moobies?
This Blalock kid seems to be making a difference in the line-up.
Good move by Wash.
Wow…baseball talk surely has gone downhill post-pennant race…
Have no fear, I is here.
@Josey Wales: It’s nice he and have one last hurah…
Smart baserunning by Byrd there!
Sorry I’m late, had to watch the Iceman and the Playmaker strut their stuff and then Peyton had to one up little broseph against Miami.
Davis just can’t get #20! One called back and top of the wall triple!
Marlon Byrd is a good example of the disparity between big and small market teams (I know we aren’t small market, but with the ownership situation, we in essence are). A large market team can pay $5-7MM for a 4th OF that will play 120 games. Not a $55MM payroll team. With the pipeline of young talent, we can roll a starting 9 out there to compete. But we can afford that kind of depth.
Evan keeps saying there is a deal to be had. No way, not with this ownership situation. And if they are bought, you think an owner is going to commit that? I don’t see it (moot anyway, because this isn’t being sold prior to the roster being finalized).
Enjoy the next 2 weeks of Byrd. He’ll be gone. Though maybe we bring him back in a trade in 2011/2012.
For this same reason, don’t fret about fat Andruw Jones or Hack Blalock. You don’t pay Jones $550K when you can pay Max Ramirex $400K. YOu don’t pay Blaock $2MM when you can can pay Smoak $400k. Get ready for Boggs next year. Also, there is a reason why they release Diamond and not Arias. You think they can pay Omar $1MM again next year? Not happening.
I don’t think its as bad as AJM thinks (trading Kins and not being able to go to arb with the CJs, Feldmans and Frankies on the roster), but I don’t see the bench/long relievers being anything other than league minimum guys.
ANd by the way, I don’t think that’s necessary a bad thing (that’s how the Yankees discovered Melky Cabrera — maybe Boggs shows something), as those guys can bring needed energy.
The payroll is going to go down a pretty good amount with Padilla, Blalock, Benoit, others coming off the book. They should be able to handle the arb. raises.
earlier in the year i put down a bet saying that bradley would play more games this year than blalock……bradley has played 124 and hank has been in 112 so it’s going to be close…….but i still think the cubs got a better value for their money…..
our gm picked up a $6 mil option on a player that had played 58 and 65 games the two seasons before and really couldn’t play the field this year……..now that the games are meaningless hank will do well and milton will refuse to play (nice)……..
Am I counting wrong, or has Chris Davis now made more diving stops at third base than MY has this year?
JustSaying — you’re not just saying you’d rather have Milton at 3 years, $30 million than Hank for 1 year, $6 million, are you?
@AJM: You’re selling Young short…he’s been more than solid at 3rd this year. Definitely eliminated a defensive hole at 3rd that’s been there for a while.
but if you want to know what’s wrong with the world all you have to do is look at our bench and see what most of the team is making (the minimum) and then look at millwood’s $12 mil…….it’s just wrong and it’s askew as lewis black would say…….just askew!
Wash made the jones comment a little after the AS break.
I am sure it is part of his, I want the players to like me psycology.
Kins needs to relax and he will be fine.
His swing is what it is.
Last year he was a MVP candidate with it he just needs some time off to figure out how the pitchers are working him and find an adjustment.
I am sure they will work on it in the offseason.
@RF – that’s my thought, particularly given Josh is only looking at around $2.2.
The big 3 to watch for are CJ, FF and Feldy.
The other 2, BMac and Nippert are interesting but this is their first time and they both missed 1/2 season. I doubt we’ll offer Grilli arb (would be foolish too). I don’t count German.
I have NO IDEA what CJ, FF and Feldy would command in arb. Collectively $7.5MM? 10MM? 5MM? I just don’t have a clue. Let’s say for the sake of math that those 3 plus Hamilton, plus Nippert and McCarthy is $15MM. $12 for Millwood. $11 for Young. $4 for Kinsler. That’s $42MM for 9 guys. That leaves say $10MM for the rest of the roster. 16 guys at the ML minimum of $400K would be $7.2MM. That $50MM. Tight but doable. I don’t see any room beyond that.
@obagain: Oh OK, well that makes me feel better. I thought this was a recent comment. That was just after his 3-homerun affair. I think that was the last time he contributed something.
@AJM no i’m saying i didn’t want hank for $6mil and i don’t want him back but i do want the cubs to pick up bradley’s salary and send him 1 for 1 for millwood……..if you thought jones was a steal for 500k then bradley would be a steal if we could dump millwood in the deal……..
@Jack — if payroll is at $55 million next season, you’re going to have issues. You’ve got Millwood and Young combining for $28 million. You’ve got Kinsler at $4 million, and Hamilton, Wilson and Frankie probably combining for about $10 million in arbitration.
Now you’re at $42 million for 4 players. That leaves you $13 million for the rest of the roster…about $600K per player for the 25 man roster.
Oh, but you also have $4 million or so you owe Vicente Padilla and Frank Catalanotto for their 2010 option buyouts.
And you’ve got Scott Feldman who is probably getting $1.5 million or so in arbitration.
So really, you’ve got $8.5 million to spend on the remaining 20 players on the 25 man roster.
Which means the remaining 20 players can all make the league minimum, and then you have $500K left over to disperse among those 20 guys as you see fit.
@JustSaying — Sure, if you could give the Cubs Millwood, and get Bradley back, and get the Cubs to pay all Bradley’s salary, that’s a great deal…you could just turn around and release Bradley if you wanted then, and it doesn’t cost you anything and you’ve still shedded Millwood and his salary. But the Cubs aren’t going to do that.
@JD: Wait..you’re saying that Hamilton, Nippert and McCarthy will make $12 mill collectively? That’s WAY high IMO. Way high…But also remember the rest of the team is at minimum levels so that’s not out of the question. They also could buyout Millwood if they wanted to save a little.
@AJM – just did similar math, no doubt its tight but I think you will have 15-16 guys at min. I left out Catalanato because I couldn’t remember his $$. I didn’t mention Padilla’s buyout because I didn’t want to stir JusySayin up again.
If money gets tight, they trade Millwood and eat half the K. That frees up $6MM more. or eat $8MM. They can get the payroll to the $50-$55MM mark. It just means no bench players earning more than the min and it probably doesn’t mean Sheets unless they move Millwood and eat $$.
@AJM: The latest article I read said Padilla and Cat were both off the books.
@Evan: Is there a Padilla option buyout? I was under the impression he was off free and clear.
Also if Young is making 11 and Millwood 12..thatt’s 23 not 28. Just sayin…
AJM, that would be great if we could do that.
Is there a team in baseball that would give bradly a 2 year 20 mil contract if he were a free agent next year? That tells you how bad that contract is.
@RF – Hamilton, Nippert, McCarthy, CJ, FF and Feldman will make $15MM in my example. $2.25 for Hamilton. 1 for Nippert. 1.5 for McCarthy. $10MM collective for CJ, FF and Feldman.
@AJM – Cubs might do that if you throw in Max Ramirez.
@Jack Daddy: For what it’s worth…Bascik said the other day his sources said Sheets’ rehab was going well and he wasn’t sure he’d ever play again. Who knows…
@AJM doesn’t the fact that the dodgers picked up padilla put them on the hook for the option? doesn’t seem logical for rangers to still be on the hook for that?
@JD: Oh ok…that makes more sense! haha…I still don’t think CJ gets more than 3…Franky about the same and Feldman…I just don’t know.
@RF – it is $23MM and yes there is a buyout for Padilla. I think $1.5 or $2MM.
Bottomline, you can get this roster done, including deferred money and buyouts (other than Arod) for $55 and that is $20 less than this year. The operating revenue will be higher next year, because attendance won’t go down. Worst case, revenue is slightly flat due to decreased merchandise — they sold a s### load of the red stuff this year.
We ARE VERY LUCKY this ownership situation is happening at a time when we have a low cost roster.
@RF – I gave up on Sheets the day the physical was failed. He’ll never pitch here.
@Jack Daddy: Dang, Padilla…the gift that keeps giving. I think they’ll be able to field the roster they want…save free agents. Attendance is up here and yes they sold a ton of red stuff this year…Could have sold more. If they’d come out with Holland, Borbon and Feliz shirts in the height of the “rookie buzz” they’d flown off the shelves…but they just now came out with Andrus a few weeks ago…oh well.
I think the Padilla buyout has been paid. We owe pussy CAT $2MM for next year and Alex Rodriguez (never refer to him as A___ on this site) $3MM.
I thought when arod opted out of his contract that took his money off the books for the rangers?
@Jack Daddy: I’m OK with that. I’d like to add a solid pithcer…well an ace but..Millwood, Feldman, Hunter, Holland (who I think will make a big jump next year) and Feliz/McCarthy/Nippert sounds pretty solid.
So this A’s pitcher hasn’t exactly harnessed his power yet…
@justsayin – Dodgers didn’t claim Padilla. They signed him as F.A. They only owe him the pro rated ML min.
We owe the balance of contract and buyout (total $12MM). I don’t know if we’ve paid it or not, but it won’t be part of the 2010 budget in any event. It will be paid before next year.
I think I would let O’Day finish this one out. 6 pitches, 5 strikes = 3 outs. Let that man go again.
That doesn’t seem logical..A-Rod opted out for a new contract but still gets paid for an option year?
there’s no way that hamilton gets a huge payday after this season….and neither will nippert or mccarthy……..frankie and cj are both arb 3 and 2 and were $1.6 and $1.8 this year and they’ll both get raises but the only “serious money” is young, millwood and kinsler at $11, $12, and $4……..and i would bet that millwood gets moved because he just doesn’t fit…….i’m a lot more worried about the negative influence of him sitting on the bench drawing $12 mil to throw what he’s throwing than a bradley being a bad influence on the kids…….
@Rangers Fan -
Did you read this today? Made me feel better about Holland.
http://www.bbtia.com/home/2009/9/21/the-brighter-side-of-derek-holland.html
@rangers fan deferred money
I’m in Berkeley right now. Went right past the stadium but couldn’t talk any of my cohorts into catching the game, and I wasn’t real fired up about seeing Millwood lock in his $12M. However, this one would have been a good one to attend. I am going to see if I can catch McCarthy tomorrow.
That ass-clown that is yelling at every pitch is getting on my nerveds..
@RF – those payments due Rodriquez are deferred amounts that he agreed to (from his days with us), not a buyout.
@Justsayin – agreed those guys won’t get huge payouts, but I don’t think those #s I laid out are “huge”. You can bet Hamilton will be with $250K of $2.25MM. Projecting $3MM each for CJ, FF and Felman is pretty conservative, for 2 guys with 20 saves and a starting pitcher that won 18-19 games.
McCarthy and Nippert combining for $2.25 is not huge.
@justsayin:
1. i agree that I would try to move millwood, even if I had to eat 1/2 the K; and
2. pretty funny that your’e worried about the influence of Millwood but weren’t concerned about the influence of Padilla?
@JD: Thanks for the link…good article though I don’t think he starts 2010 in OKC.
scott lucas doesn’t have us owing padilla any money for 2010 past the $12 mil we paid this year…..
that even made me laugh………
Oh and Guardado won’t be here either…whatever he makes which is probably minimal.
@just sayin: I thought it was a club option for next year but no buyout clause…but apparently I’m wrong, idk.
This is stupid.
All this guy does is get frustrated when he can’t get an out.
Which by the way, is every time he’s out there.
I’m almost embarrassed for Guardado. He’s had a great career but it looks like it is coming to an end.
@JustSaying – I believe he has the buyout included in that $12MM(I believe the salary was only $10MM)
@RF – not saying he doesn’t need it (I would rather wait to see how he looks in Spring Training), but I don’t think you keep running him out there in a pennent race and then put him in AAA to start the next year for more seasoning. Doesn’t make sense. Now, if he looks like he doesn’t get it in Spring Training, that’s a different story. I don’t think anyone’s job is guaranteed and there will be some competition.
But stuff wise, he throws the hardest and misses the most bats of all our starters (unless you count Feliz in that category).
Good win, too bad the Angels won, might have have given me a little false hope
@just saying – Lucas has it wrong. It was $12MM this year PLUS a $1.75 buyout for next year. Google it. YOu’ll get dozens of confirmations. Plus, its on wikipedia, so it must be right since anyone can update it.
The Office joke.
Thank you for the kind words, Jack Daddy.
@Joey – you are very welcome. I love your site. The work you do is really awesome. Add to that fact you do it while in school is pretty impressive. Good stuff.
jack daddy trumps lucas….what is the world coming to?
@JustSaying – yeah, right? Crazy, huh? Lucas is awesome. That chart he has is great, but he acknowledges it isn’t 100% accurate (e.g., he has Elvis with serf status through 2014).
A couple of things. Good point Evan about the team’s desires relative to the type of teammate they want. There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell that Bradley comes back to the Rangers. Secondly, I think you overestimate Byrd’s value/popularity in the clubhouse and with management. He won’t be back either.
