7:30: Home Run Pool is open. And for your pre-game reading enjoyment, we’ve got some notes, quotes and anecdotes. If I’m not here before game-time, I should be back right around first pitch. I’m having a spot of grown-up dinner. Yay!
10:35: Elvis Andrus ties Ian Kinsler for the team lead in steals with a sixth-inning swipe. It gives him 29 in 33 attemps (87.9 percent). Among the majors most frequent runners, Andrus’ steal percentage is the best in baseball. The Rangers, currently with an 81.8 percent success rate, are on pace to set the AL record for best stolen base percentage among teams with at least 150 attempts.
Boston’s already down 5-0 to KC in the bottom of the 2nd. Hey, it (our season) ain’t over till it’s over!
@beerguy: as long as we win, we have a chance.
We would have to just about win out but at least we still have a chance, who would have thought that in april?
Evan, what are you having for dinner?
Hola all, they should freakin tape delay the west coast games for those smucks out there.
I’m starting to have a new idea on our September swoon vs. Seattle, Oakland and LA. I think the weather delays and days off contributed to us getting out of rhythm, combined with (and made worse) players over thinking the situation.
Seattle went through the same delays as us, so why weren’t they affected? Sure, ok, Oakland has played better lately, but they certainly didn’t look like a better team than us last night (against one of the same pitchers!). And we started to pull out of the funk against LA. Now, once we’re very close to out of it, the players loosen up and we play well again.
Where’s Part Time Ranger Fan? PTRF, we need your other team’s help! Beat LA!
Evening all…
How is the ROY race shaping up?
Amazing that the knock on elvis was he couldnt hit enough and here he is hitting 271 after jumping AAA and playing the full season in the majors.
How good will he be when he really learns to hit?
@obagain: I still have to remind myself sometimes how young he is.
What he is doing is amazing for anyone but to have that tag that he couldnt hit and hold his own is incredible.
I just hope that the regular fans understand how good his season has been.
Dang that was a give up by Kennedy…
Kennedy sure was stupid there.
The ump looked like he told him to go to the dugout and he didnt, the umps hands are tied if that is how it goes.
How great would it be to have mccarthy healthy for a full season?
Next year…or will that ever happen?
feldman, holland, millwood, harrison and then have mccarthy, feliz, nippert fighting for the 5th sport with 3-4 guy not far behind them.
@Evan: On a non-Rangers note, fun game between Georgia and Arkansas on Saturday, eh? Thought we had you for a while there! And how about them Falcons? Did someone say “sophomore slump” regarding Ryan?? Perish the thought!
At this point Harrison should not be guaranteed a spot for next year. He’ll have to earn it, IMO.
A kinsler flyout to the outfield! Think I’ve seenthat already.
http://trsullivan.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/09/guardado_looking_at_retiring.html
@RF: Was just reading that. Sounds like the end for Eddie (and probably the right time to do it).
RF why, he was injured.
OBAGAIN: About next year’s rotation. Doesn’t Tommy Hunter get a shot? I read in the DMN this morning that RW says he isn’t assured of a rotation spot, but surely he gets a chance.
@obagain: Don’t forget hunter. And I think Holland needs some AAA or Winter League time.
So you honestly feel different if it’s a groundout or popout. That’s a little ridiculous to me.
beer guy, I think last year was the time for him to retire.
Anyone getting reports from Fall Instructs?
Some of those ground balls turn into hits, especially with Kinsler’s speed. The fly balls get caught.
@OB, I guess hoping for an injury free McCarthy is like hoping for Nolan Ryan to find the fountain of youth and come back to pitch next season.
@obagain: True, he could have gone out on top. He had a very nice season last year. This year? Uh, not so much. But hey, it’s not a complete loss, with what he brings to the clubhouse, morale, etc.
@obagain: He was shaky before that…I think Millwood will be dealt. I’d role with: Feldman, Hunter, McCarthy, Holland, Harrison/Feliz/tbd.
Is anyone considering muting the TV in order to avoid the drumbing, yelling guy…Ranger ushers certainly wouldn’t allow that to happen.
Sorry guys, I have millwood on the brain, I think we trade millwood in offseason and it should have been hunter at the 3 spot.
What woukd have to happen for the Rangers to be move to the A.L Central?
Would it have made any difference if Wash had put Blalock back in at 1st base and moved Davis over to 3rd as soon as MY went out?
@win’s dad: And some of the flyouts lead to runs coming home, homeruns…i hate shallow flyouts, foulouts, ok…but he hit that ball hard and deep..if it’s to LF, its out.
Another bright spot is learning davis can fill in at 3rd if he had to, the more versitile the better.
If Eddie had retired after last season, Holland couldn’t have followed him around like a puppy dog this season.
well that was a comedy of errors.
Now that was Bush League crap right there.
That looked like a little league team (or beer league softball).
Uhhh seriously? Like I said…Nelson Cruz should never play RF.
Why don’t you score that an “E-Everybody” right there.
I take cruz out for sitting there and not jumping up to get to the ball, that is uncalled for.
Too bad Fred isn’t here. He would have been all over that.
@obagain: Yep, but it’d be a cold day in hell before Wash makes an example of a player.
Let’s see–McCarthy’s thrown over 30 pitches thru one and two-thirds, while Cahill has only thrown 21 thru two. Guess who’s still not working the count?
be nice to at least tie it up right here.
thanks bobby, looks like the reverse jinx worked, cahill is making lots of pitches now.
@Ryan’s dada-Oh, but I am here. Just quiet, of late. Glad ro aee the slide rule/pocket protecter crowd best fielding RF is still holding up. Actually, it started with one of his patented lousy jumps, then his oft seen moment of indecision, then settling into the best seat in the house to watch the play unfold.
That’s a pretty good rendition Fred!
fred, I havent always agreed with your assesment of cruz but you were dead on with that one.
5 things to chew on as this year turns into next (let’s hear your take):
1. Will Murphy go back to #7 next (if Pudge doesnt come back)? Will Pudge come back?
2. I don’t think we’ll see 2008 Hamilton or 2009 Hamilton. I think we’ll see something closer to 2009 than 2008 though. What do you think?
3. They will want to keep Feliz’ innings under 150. They can either do it by putting him in the rotation and limiting him early (like the Tigers did with Porcello or the DBacks did with the Scherzer) or start him in pen like Holland. What month will he enter rotation?
4. Will Martin Perez see Arlington next year?
5. Who scares you more, LAA with their aging stars (and soon to depart free agents) or the As, with Anderson and Cahill (and Bailey to boot)?
6. Would you trade Millwood and Max Ramirez for Bradley, with the Cubs picking up the 2011 salary for Bradley (or a substantial portion of it)?
What say you?
Ahhhh, that’s what I needed Fred. Now the corner feels right again.
My take:
1. Murphy sticks with 14
2. something closer to 2009
3. Enters rotation day 1, but is limited to 80 pitches much of the first 2 months. Though this is really throwing darts. I really think it depends on how the pen shakes out without him.
4. I hope NO, because if its yes, I think that means September doesn’t include meaningful baseball.
5. Oakland, in a run-away.
6. Yes, if MY gave the thumbs up. If no, no.
I think pudge comes back.
Hamilton will be closer to 2008, he is too talented not to.
I think they start feliz in the pen and he starts in june.
perez will see arlington in sept.
The a’s have a brighter future and still have some decent pitchers coming.
I want no part of bradley.
oh yeah – Pudge comes back (they can justify paying him 1-1.5, because he will generate the extra ticket/merchandise revenue. TT starts year in OKC.
also meant to ask whether you think there is ANY CHANCE the team moves downtown in the next 5 years connection with any sale. I say no, and that makes me sad.
JACK DADDY: (#5) The Angels scare me more. Solid starting pitching, resourceful owner, the best manager in the A. L. The Mariners scare me more than the A’s. They lost more than 100 games last year, but Wakamatsu has them over .500 in 09. They can be really dangerous next season if they continue to improve at a rate anywhere near that.
I do give millwood props for changing his delivery this late in the season, not many vets would be willing to do that, I hope it works out for him.
Wins Dad – I think the Ms lose Felix to NYY or Boston at next year’s trading deadline. Once that happens, the Ms will be 2 years back (though they should bring in some nice talent – if the Sox were willing to give Buchholz, Bowden and Masterson for 1 year of Halladay, jeez – think what they do for Felix and the chance to be the inside horse when its time to re-sign him).
Angels resources are impressive, but you can’t buy a WS (though they may tempt that fate this very season).
I’d love to see the downtown Dallas ballpark too, but the clowns at city hall let the Cowboys go to Irving in the late 60′s; then let them go to Arlington this time around. Ron Kirk got the AAC deal done to keep the Mavs in tow, but he’s not the Mayor these days.
I am so sick of hearing that Cruz is a five tool outfielder. I guess that doesn’t include fielding as he sucks at that. That was an error not a triple and wher4 was Byrd
too busy trying to catch balls in left field. Cruz should be DH only.
Jack Daddy:
1. Really have no idea. Murphy looks good in the #7.
2. Closer to 2008 than 2009
3. I’ll go with the pen.
4. No-He’ll end the year in AAA and start here in 2011
5. Oakland
6. Uhh…maybe, but probably not.
1.Pudge back if he takes a Vizquel type deal.
2.I’m counting on a rebound year for Josh.
3.Knowing Nolan he is in rotation since the sstart and will be tested often.
4.Same here. if yes something bad happened.
5.Still LAA because their owner.
6.No as of right now ( reserve the right to change my mind)
@Win’s Dad: There’s also a hockey team in town. They’re the ones who brought this town its last championship and probably has the best chance of being the next one.
“I’m starting 2 wonder if this whole ‘tipping pitches’ crap is just code for ‘i blow right now & can’t figure it out’…epidemic
A tweet from Victor Rojas…what is he talking about? Am I missing something?
Prediction – Blalock signs a low cost deal to go SD. That give SD somebody to plug in to 1B if (and when) they move Adrian Gonz. because they don’t pony up. Blalocks’ hometown and beloved team.
Then again, Hank may want to stick to A.L. Either way, let’s just say he’s not going to need much tax planning, buddy.
SD cant do that, they have no money and 2 1b would be a luxury to them.
If they were in the al maybe but neither player can play another position.
So whatever happened to Evan…
Good question RF?
@obagain – you’re probably right because the position. Re/ money, do you see anyone give Hack more than $1MM? But still, you’re probably right. He fits somewhere where they need a lefty DH, back up 1B.
Once we get eliminated, I think it behooves us to get Borbon some starts in CF, don’t your think?
Didn’t everyone in the world know he was going curveball there? If there’s one thing I’m not impressed with regarding Pudge, it’s his pitch calling. It’s been like that for a while with most pitchers.
@JD, I’m not sure that Borbon is being considered the future CF for the Rangers
@RD: Then that’s a problem…because Hamilton is not viewed as a longterm CF…better see what Gentry can do.
I like Brandon McCarthy, I really do. I also think he can be a piece on a championship squad. I just don’t think he has the stuff to be a starter and give you 30 starts at 6 innings a start. I think his stuff plays to the pen. The only concern is his health (is he better suited to pitching once in 5 days?) and his preference for routine. My take? If he refuses (mentally) a move to the pen, deal him. I hope I’m wrong, I just don’t see him as a starter. He has the “stuff” of an innings eating bulldog, but I don’t think his arm will ever allow him to be that. I think he loses the feel for his location too quickly, and with a guy like that you need to be able to yank him immediately. Again, I hope I’m wrong because I like him and enjoy watching him pitch. He just doesn’t wow me (by comparison, Nippert stuff is much filthier).
It’s why I think they need Byrd back here next year more than Murph. That hurts to say.
Sheesh…Cruz looks hideous tonight. In the field at the plate.
I would like to see borbon in center the rest of the way to see if he can handle it.
I see hank getting a look in boston and chicago.
I think the giants would give him a look and have a little money to play with.
Is it just me, or is the mom on the DP promo up top kinda hot? I’m just sayin
Marlon Byrd is not a starting CF on a championship team. He is a 4th outfielder. A very valuable one but not a cog to defense or offense.
RD, I hope byrd is back but I think he gets a good offer from someone else.
Long day on the East Coast again. I won’t be staying up.
Jack Daddy – if Evan is the straw of Inside Corner, surely you are the stirrod. To take nothing away from all the other insightful commentators. Night all. Keep the Faith.
oh dear…stop throwing the predictable curveball!
@Jack Daddy: I don’t believe that’s a mom, but a sister.
@Ryan’s Dad, Ranger Fan: I am here, but like Fred, I’ve been a little quiet lately. Guess the air was taken out of my sails a little, too, by the awful homestand,
Are you freakin kidding me? I missed the Home Run Pool again by a freakin foot!
@john in clearwater – I’m just bored (Jack Mamma in bed) and only real have one friend that likes to talk baseball (and 1/2 the time he’s ranting about why wash needs to get fired and it just gets tired), so I get my fix here with you guys. I love baseball talk. To me, there’s nothing better. Not even close. I also like you dudes on here.
And girl!…and where’s Becca?
@Evan – really? she’s at least 20 though, right?
My wind was let out BIG TIME. But sulked all weekend (2 depression naps) and realized I was about to go 6 months without baseball so figured I would enjoy the next 2 weeks. Even wearing my new Feliz uni!
nah – that’s a mom.
@JackDaddy: so that’s what’s wrong with Holland! You switched allegiance!
@scooper – not switched. I’m still a Holland guy. If I had to keep one, I’d take Holland, since he’s a lefty and I just have an affinity for him. But with the split finger, Feliz is far better than what I saw of him in Frisco and thought he would be a nice addition to the collection. Thought I think we’ve just won 2 or 3 times since I bought it.
Nice to hear from you. Thought you have moved on to football or something.
happy time.
Nope, still around. Some personal stuff came up and I wasn’t watching the games live.
…and I was just teasing. I know you’re a Holland guy!
Seems like they wanted feliz to back off and he has not been as good since then.
What is it about Neftali’s fastball that Pudge doesn’t like?
Feliz has been off for last 3 or 4 times out.
Pudge apparently doesn’t like anyone’s fastball. He’s been soft a lot lately…
I’m sorry but I’m getting sick of all the Pudge praise..yes, everyone knows he’s one of the best ever and no one loves him more than Ranger fans..but come on! It’s getting gag worthy. Probably an unpopular comment…
@Ranger Fan – I’ve watched more Pudge caught games than any other catcher. I know he had the critism of not calling a good game only to go to Fla and win a WS and then take Det to one. But I see the same thing I saw his last run here. I don’t like the way he calls a game. It may be random correlation, but it seems our pitchers fell off the instant that he got here.
I like Pudge just fine, but never loved him. I am left to scratch my head at whether he calls a good game or not. Hear so many conflicting things and I’m not astute enough to know what’s what.
I agree I don’t think Pudge is the second coming either. I also think Feliz has bit pitcged near as well with him behind the plate. It really iritates the heck out of me that he took 7 from Murph. I know Murph offered it but he didn’t have to take it. Has everyone forgotten about the steroids.
@Jack Daddy: I agree. I’m not gonna say it’s Pudge and that’s it…but it has to play some kind of a part. I like Pudge. What Ranger fan doesn’t…but he’s mot one of my all time favs…certainly will not hold a candle to Young or any other Ranger who plays a long time here, in my heart…I won’t be sad if he’s not back next year.
It is obvious that the pitchers have not been pitching as well since he arrived. He wont let Feliz pitch his fastball maybe its because he knows he can’t catch it.
Personal Opinion: I think Pudge over-thinks it. He seems to fall into the trap of thinking that everyone is looking fastball, he wants to fool them, so he falls in love with secondary pitches. He needs to understand that it is better to work to a pitcher’s strength, rather than to the batter’s weakness (assuming these are different).
My biggest possible negative from 09? I hope the utilization in bullpen hasn’t been a detriment to Feliz and Holland. Both have seen about a 2-3 mph drop in their fastball. Now that may have nothing to do with the wear of piching in the pen on short rest (perhaps its just them learning to pitch and not needing to dial it up every throw). I’ll be glad when next year gets here and Holland can settle into a starting routine from Day 1 and hopefully the same can be said for Feliz.
@scooper – who does that sound like? A certain left handed pitcher that likes matching gloves?
@JackDaddy: I really think it is that they are dialing down the speed in order to get better command. Fatigue could play a part, but I think they are going for better command.
@JackDaddy: yep. If our guys had the same command with fastballs and secondary pitches, Pudge’s way would be fine. But they don’t.
@scooper: I think that’s true with holland…but Feliz’ command has regressed along with the velocity.
@scooper, that’s my hunch and I hope that’s right (also the BPiA gun is on the slow side).
Why exactly did we put Wille Eyre in?
This looks like a good place to go to bed, see yall next time.
@RangerFan: I think what we are seeing with Feliz is the inconsistency of youth. He set the bar so high, there is no way that he could have kept that up. Remember, in the minors he gave up quite a few walks this year. He went through spurts when he didn’t, but he’s doing the same thing up here now.
@JackDaddy: but he started in Oakland hitting 100 mph. He didn’t come close tonight.
I spent about 15 minutes trying to find my post from about a month ago. I profiled the Rangers, Angels and Red Sox remaining games and pointed out that Texas played Oak 10 times and the Angels played them 9 times and noted that West would likely be decided by (in addition to the Head to Head with Tex/LAA) the As. Sure enough, that is what has happened.
Again, no shame in that IMO, as I think the As are playing great ball and have the look of a dangerous team next year. This Davis has been a thorn in our side since that triple that won that nighmare in Oak last month.
Going to bed. Night all.
FYI: Although the chances were 1 in a million…I think the manager has given up on the season. If not, there’s no way you put in Willie Eyre only down 2.
@scooper – yep, and that’s why I have that in the back of my mind. Again, I think you’re mostly right in that they are dialing down for better location.
Eyre is not missing many bats.
I’m sick of the halfbutt effort in the outfield by Nelson Cruz. He takes horrible routs to the ball, doesn’t dive when he should, and does dive when he shouldn’t. Yeah he has a strong arm, but those other things overshadow his errors.
He should strictly be the DH next season. Ridiculous.
i meant are overshadowed by his erros…my bad
@RF – this has highlighted a problem with this team and real weak spot (though the same can be said for about 25 teams) – we don’t have strong options for the pen when we’re trailing. You can’t use Oday, cj, FF and Feliz every game. down 3-1, you don’t go to CJ. MAYBE Oday, but eyre/mathis/nippert was the better move. Mathis and nippert are more long guys.
It is what it is.
@Jack Daddy, scooper: The Rangers have reminded Feliz he can dial things down a bit and improve location without losing the ability to overpower hitters.
Well I guess we will continue to leave the over the hill catcher in even though he is calling an awful game. These young guys are afraid to shake him off and they just pitch what he says. A veteran pitcher would throw his fastball.
@Evan: Well it seems since that little convo he hasn’t overpowered many hitters and his command was….well perfect before. Not that I know more than a baseball team…but, just sayin.
@Jack Daddy: Well, Wash used O’Day in a blowout last night. I would have rather seen him used tonight rather than last night. I would also rather see Grilli before Eyre.
Nelson Cruz needs to be taken out of the outfield there is absolutely no excuse for his poor routes and his total laziness such as not getting up after he misses the ball and going after it. I know a good way to uncrowd the outfield sit his butt on the bench
I know this has been discussed before, but I always wonder if Wash or Maddux is deciding how to use the relief pitchers.
It would not bother me if Cruz was not here next year.
Word is the Rays want to trade Crawford or Upton. If you are the Rangers, do you go after one of them, giving you Borbon, Andrus and Crawford/Upton as rabbits on the bases?
ATTN JOSH LEWIN: IT’S OK TO ADMIT PUDGE IS HAING A BAD INNING! Sheesh…the but kissing has got to stop.
