flyingfish31:30: So, it was kind of an eventful Saturday night in the AL West race. The Rangers two wins over the last two games combined with the Angels losses mean that Texas will go to California still officially in the AL West race. As of this morning, the Angels magic number remains four.

1:47: Quick note: I am not at the game today due to travel plans. As such, I did get lineup in time for a homer pool. I do have the lineup now, though and here it is: 2B Ian Kinsler, SS Elvis Andrus, LF David Murphy, CF Marlon Byrd, 1B Hank Blalock, DH Andruw Jones, RF Nelson Cruz, 3B Chris Davis, C Taylor Teagarden and pitching for the Rangers … RHP Brandon McCarthy.

What I find most interesting about this lineup is the absence of Julio Borbon. The Rangers simply will not play the rookie against left-handed pitching (today the opponent is LHP David Price).

2:04: Ron Washington told reporters today that Michael Young is available to pinch hit today and that he is expected to play third base on Monday in Anaheim.

2:33: Angels-A’s are about to start. You can follow it here. Just one of many places you can follow it.

2:36: Time off apparently did Nelson Cruz some good.  Hits a two-run homer to give Rangers the lead just as Angels are taking field in Anaheim.

3:02: Pitching and defense wins, right? Nice job of both in critical situation by Brandon McCarthy, who had two on and no outs in the fourth, and Elvis Andrus, who made a key play by getting an out at third base on a ground ball.

3:04: Angels take 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

3:17: McCarthy does another adagio (that’s a dance, I think) around trouble in the fifth. Angels up 2-0, through two.

3:36: Rangers have extended lead in the fifth. In Anaheium, Angels have extended their lead, also. It’s 4-0, thanks two a Kendry Morales homer.

4:28: For the eighth, Ron Washington doesn’t make any defensive changes with a 5-0 lead. Chris Davis then fumbles a two-out grounder at third that leads to a big inning. Inevitably, the question is what’s more important at this stage: Run reduction or run production? It’s the former with nine outs or less. Davis should have been at first and either Esteban German or Omar Vizquel at third.

4:54: And there goes your momentum. Frank Francisco can’t protect a three-run ninth inning lead.

5:13: Well, this one will be EXTREMELY difficult to stomach. Lot of questions to be answered. Not sure they will be. Steve Busby just stepped out there and said some mistakes were made by the manager and the pitchers. Spill your guts here. It appears the Rangers may be walking right into a potential AL West championship celebration. If the Angels hold on to their three-run ninth inning lead (which Rangers couldn’t do), they will reduce magic number to two. Any Los Angeles win over the next four days will eliminate the Rangers.

    lineup?

  • Ranger Fan

Jones in place of Hamilton in the last homegame?

  • Evan Grant

@Ranger Fan: Yep. No Hamilton. Day game after night game. Rangers trying to be cautious regarding placement of stress on the back. Feeling better to not have him one day and have him for final seven, than to risk not having him for substantial parts of final week.

  • Ranger Fan

I suppose..but I’d rather see Borbon, heck Gentry, before I wanna watch another Andruw Jones at bat.

  • Beesley

Amen. No more Jones. Ever. Please.

  • Ryans Dad

I can’t imagine how the Angels will feel taking the field against Texas with only a 4 game cushion. It makes my face smile.

  • Ranger Fan

Well…we’d have to win and they lose Ryan’s Dad…

  • Beesley

    Why not DH Vizquel?

  • Ranger Fan

I think it was here we were discussing where Durrett at DMN…was that all hashed out? I happebed to check out his twitter…and it appears he will be writing for the new ESPN Dallas…I assume that means no more DMN for him.

  • Tom B

That’s what they say. He and Tim at ESPN-Radio.

  • Ranger Fan

Well that’s good for him. The DMN sports coverage has gone downhill quick. Heikia’s good with hockey…and I suppose Cowboys is fine just bc of the fact there’s a thousands writers who cover them. As far as the Rangers go…their coverage has been horrible. They get scooped on everything and have had very few must read articles…if any. Oh the economy…thanks goodness for the corner!

  • Evan Grant

2:36: Time off apparently did Nelson Cruz some good. Hits a two-run homer to give Rangers the lead just as Angels are taking field in Anaheim.

  • Tom B

This is not the line-up I would hope to find under the tree on Christmas morning. Does A. Jones, H Blalock and N Cruz with a TT back share any similarity with Murderer’s Row? I’m accepting C Davis as a functioning hitter. I can see the Heasdlines, “Rangers Whimper out of town. Wash says, ‘Baseball gods just didn’t visit today.’” Talk about Cold Water on a Hot Day.

  • AJM

    Nelson Cruz > Marlon Byrd

  • Ryans Dad

    Who’s the Frazier family?

  • Ranger Fan

I thought the same thing Ryans Dad…I think that’s the bullpen catchers last name..maybe that’s the connection?

What a bad minute for Bartlett.

  • Evan Grant

Yes, Josh Frasier is the bullpen catcher. What was said? Am running around packing.

  • Ryans Dad

TAG just wanted to send out condolences to the Frasier family, and that was the end of the statement

  • Ranger Fan

So was that in response to the Bartlett hit? If so that’s kind of dumb…clearly notintentional.

  • Buck

Nellie Cruz breaks out w/ authority. “Ron Washington sits me for two guys. Well, I’ll show him!!!!”

    Go Rangers!!

It ain’t over until the phat lady sings!

  • Evan Grant

3:02: Pitching and defense wins, right? Nice job of both in critical situation by Brandon McCarthy, who had two on and no outs in the fourth, and Elvis Andrus, who made a key play by getting an out at third base on a ground ball.

  • Evan Grant

Angels score two in bottom of first, lead 2-0. They led 3-2 at the end of one yesterday.

  • Ryans Dad

If the A’s can keep it close until they get into the bullpen, I like their chances

  • Ranger Fan

BOOOOOOO….Is there a rational explanation for Andruw Jones playing today?

  • Tom B

@RF, well, he walks a lot and scores ahead of Cruz on Home Runs. Other than that, I think you can write The End.

  • AJM

“BOOOOOOO….Is there a rational explanation for Andruw Jones playing today?”

A lefty on the mound, and a dearth of righthanded bats on the bench.

  • Ryans Dad

Is Blalock’s arm complete mush? You know he used to be our third baseman.

  • Ranger Fan

Do you really feel good that your D walks a lot? I don’t…I think he’s putrid and it’s an embarrassment that he gets a start in must win games.

  • Tom B

Who is this new guy, McCarthy? Have we had him long? 48 pitches thru 4 with a lead. I like it.

  • Ryans Dad

Stay tuned Tom B. I predict he will be the first pitcher in history to actually have his arm fall completely off his body during a game. It will be a scene right out of Kill Bill

  • Evan Grant

3:17: McCarthy does another adagio (that’s a dance, I think) around trouble in the fifth. Angels up 2-0, through two.

  • john in clearwater

Okay, okay, day game after night game. But geez, this is sure a light hitting lineup. Hopefully, we can make this lead stand up.

  • Ranger Fan

@Ryans Dad: Do you really want Blalock playing 3rd? Davis has been good. I like him better at 1st and Young at 3rd and Blalock not playing in the field…but considering the circumstances, we’ve been lucky.

  • Ranger_Rick

Little luck and help from the defense, McCarthy just might pull out 7 innings today

  • Ryans Dad

What a low point for the Deadskins, to get beat by the Lions is disgraceful.

  • AJM

Evan — “Adagio” is playing music at a slow tempo. I only know that because my son’s favorite “Little Einsteins” DVD includes an episode which involves a train going “adagio” that needs to go “allegro.”

  • Tom B

A fast working pitcher and a two run lead, That’s like Happy Hour at the Beach.

  • Ryans Dad

@RF, no I don’t want hank selling T-Shirts at our gift shop. I was just wondering out loud why that was never an option after Young got hurt.

  • Ranger Fan

@Ryan’s Dad: I think for that reason…he can’t do it.

  • Fred

    Nice AB by Davis

  • john in clearwater

Read today on ESPN.com that Vizquel wants to play again next year.

  • Ryans Dad

Terrible at bat so far by TT

  • Joel

TT – work on your bunts. Good thing Kinsler bailed you out.

  • Tom B

I’m thinking Jack Daddy at the game and Rangers Players Meet and Greet as part of Fan Appreciation Day. I hope Holland wasn’t at JDs gate. It might have created a scene.
On 2nd thought, I hope he was. Pictures at 5:00pm News

  • Ranger_Rick

Nice hit there by Kins.. I think he just may be getting his attitude problem behind him and thus his pitch selection is getting better.

  • Ranger_Rick

beautiful… this is the kind of baseball I like to watch!

  • Jack Daddy

Tom B – actually did go right in his gate! I didn’t say anything but my wife did. I met him before at evan’s inside corner event.

  • Ranger Fan

    I love the squeeze…

  • Ryans Dad

What did your wife say to him?

  • Tom B

I think we have something here. Rangers have that far off look in their eye.

  • Tom B

@ JD, Yeah, but will there be pictures?

  • Evan Grant

3:36: Rangers have extended lead in the fifth. In Anaheium, Angels have extended their lead, also. It’s 4-0, thanks two a Kendry Morales homer.

  • Ryans Dad

Not to PP on the parade but the Angels just scored 2 more runs. It’s 4-0 now

  • Amstel Dame

Is the score 5 to 0 or 7 to 0 we can’t tell. Thank you,
    Hazelle and Kittin Klonhammer

  • Ranger Fan

That was kind of an unnecessary steal attempt for Andrus…

  • Ryans Dad

    FYI, I love the Klonhammer’s

  • Tom B

In another day it would also carry a fine from the manager for making the 3rd out at third. Bad Base running!

  • john in clearwater

Gotta believe that McCarthy probably on a short leash if Feliz is ready to go. If he can make through six without much damage that would be awesome.

  • Ranger Fan

I’m going to be very upset if Feliz is used today…please save him for a close game.

  • john in clearwater

By the way, where has Feliz’s velocity been sitting lately?

  • Jack Daddy

Something to the effect of you’ve done so good this year and we’ve loved watching you. I’m sure he was like, “whatever”. :)

Totally unecessary steal attempt by elvis. Though he looked safe.

  • Ryans Dad

Bring in Mahoney! That made me laugh so hard last night.

  • john in clearwater

Ranger Fan – it’s only five runs, but I’m going to side with you. If McCarthy makes it through six unscathed, I run Mathis out there and see how he does. Maybe he could finish out the entire game.

  • Ryans Dad

    Low to mid 90′s John

  • Evan Grant

From Anaheim: Angels up 5-0 going to bottom of fifth.

  • Tom B

McCarthy at 83 pitches through 7. I’d let that ride for another pass or two.

  • Tom B

This has been a really well pitched game by McCarthy. Not overpowering, 3Ks, Not many BBs, 1, 5 hits scattered. He just pitches where their bats ain’t. Keeps the ball in play and pretty good D

  • Amstel Dame

I only wish the Rangers hit so many runs before this time. We love to have these days games to watch. It has been a very interesting years hear on InsidesCorner. Thanks Evan to give us such cheer!
    Hazelle and Kittin Klonhammer

  • Evan Grant

The Klonhammers really do have a way with the language, don’t they? We love you Hazelle and Kittin. Although we’re not sure who is who.

  • Tom B

From a very Partial Observer, The Rangers need their best defensive players at their BEST posiotions. The runs have scored. We need STOPS NOW! Wake-Up Wash, Smell The Coffee.

  • Ranger Fan

Wash doesn’t do the always smart thing Tom…

  • Evan Grant

Through six in Anaheim, still 5-0.

  • Tom B

You know, I have been in Bars like this. All of a sudden I realize it’s just me and the bartender and two girls from out of town. I’m not even sure about that. Ahh, but for the fog of war.

  • Tom B

I’m going to have to mark him down in my season ending critique.

  • Ranger_Rick

    Wilson sure needs this one…

  • Ranger_Rick

Hey, Tom I think it is nap time…

  • Amstel Dame

Oh, my. Well I am Hazelle, a big baseball fan here in Amsterdam and my wife is Kittin. I work at the Heineken Brewery here in Amsterdam that is why I speaks English so much. Kittin is a lace maker and her English is not good. Thanks for welcoming us.

  • DC

Well atleast Upton can’t score from first now.

  • Ranger Fan

The unintelligent ranger fans rears it’s ugly head…booiing CJ. (and they applauded O’Day) Take a gander at the stats people…

  • Ranger Fan

    their*

  • Ranger_Rick

Boston loses and Yankees clinch division title.

  • Evan Grant

4:28: For the eighth, Ron Washington doesn’t make any defensive changes with a 5-0 lead. Chris Davis then fumbles a two-out grounder at third that leads to a big inning. Inevitably, the question is what’s more important at this stage: Run reduction or run production? It’s the former with nine outs or less. Davis should have been at first and either Esteban German or Omar Vizquel at third.

  • DC

    Here comes Oakland.

  • Ranger Fan

@Evan: Why didn’t he learn his lesson before? I thought he said he did….

  • Ryans Dad

All’s well that ends well and I feel sick at my stomach

  • Ranger_Rick

    THANK YOU FF!!!

  • Evan Grant

Frank Francisco gets out of trouble with a strikeout of Gregg Zaun. Meanwhile in Anaheim, A’s scored three runs in seventh to cut margin in that game to 5-3.

  • Tom B

This game is getting out of control because of one 2 out error.

  • Buck

And I thought Wash was learning on the job…

Would have been nice to have some defensive replacements there …

Man, I wish CJ would come in and throw strikes in those situations…

  • Buck

    WTG Frankie Frank!!

  • Ranger Fan

Ok so this is a joke…is Knox really doing this?

  • Ryans Dad

I’m getting a Marlon tattoo’d on the small of my back tonight! Who coming with me?

  • Ruffian

    THANK YOU MARLON!!!!!!!!!

  • 6062

Thankfully this will be last time this year we will have to listen to Knoxie and miss important part of game. (Also please get rid of batting stance guy)

  • Ranger Fan

How is the game in Arizona in delay…don’t they have a roof?

  • Ron W

Leave me alone! I am a good manager!

  • Ryans Dad

I wish Knoxious could make his grand exit around the middle of June.

  • Ranger Fan

Why do we have to be tortured??

  • Buck

    Frankie Frank throwing some HEAT!

  • john in clearwater

    Is it over yet?

  • Ranger Fan

    No…2 on, 1 out…

  • Tom B

We need an out, win, miracle in LA.

  • john in clearwater

I can’t bear to follow it. Gyeaaaaah, gasp.

  • Ryans Dad

You have to give Feliz the ball now

  • Ranger Fan

Get him out of there…he has NO command. None. He will implode.

  • Evan Grant

Absolutely agonizing, but that’s what playoff race baseball does.

  • Ranger Fan

Getting booed at home on the final day of the season…

  • Ryans Dad

And now it’s too late. So close, so freakin close

  • Ruffian

I know the conventional wisdom says to trust your closer, but that was ridiculous.

  • Tom B

Frankie at 27 pitches. If he goes 30 we are in danger of a melt down.

  • Ranger Fan

FF blows a 3-run lead in the bottom of the 9th…haven’t we seen this movie before?

  • Joel

Well as frustrating as this is, give credit to the Rays. Starting with that error they seemed determined to win. Joe Maddon sending up all his bench and everything.

  • Next Season

Players that suck: Francisco, CJ, Guardado, Grilli, Mathis, Millwood, Kinsler, Blalock, Cruz, and German.

  • Tom B

    Thank You, Ron Washington.

  • Ranger Fan

That’s maybe the dumbest thing I’ve seen written here this season.

  • AJM

Francisco and CJ have been two of the best relievers in a very good bullpen this year, and Kinsler and Cruz have been two of the three best players on the team this year.

  • Ruffian

    I think I’m going to be sick…

  • Craig

Oh my god, I’m watching a team crumble before my eyes.

  • Ranger Fan

Well…at least we have Young and Hamilton on the bench.

  • Joel

Its ridiculous to blame Ron Washington for this could be loss. He put the game in the hands of his best players. Thats what you have to do.

  • Ranger Fan

I swear if Andruw Jones bats….I’ll go insane.

  • Robert

Washington needs to go. It kills me to watch him manage a pitching staff. He has no clue.

  • The Golden One

Even if the Rangers come back to win and the man goes on to save more games than anyone in history, I will NEVER forgive Frank Francisco for this game. Time for him to go back to chair-throwing. Eff off, you gutless a-hole.

  • Ruffian

    HE’S LETTING JONES BAT?

Ranger Fan, you can start screaming now…

  • Buck

I walk away for a minute and wow…

    Ahhhh A. Jones is up.

  • Ron W

what does “your comment is awaiting moderation” mean?

  • Evan Grant

@Ron W: We don’t play that game here. If you want to blame the manager, that’s fine and welcome. But the rest of it crossed a line, especially with your chosen handle.

@Next season: C’mon, dude. There is plenty of reason to be frustrated – if you really want. But let’s try and keep this realistic.

  • Ranger Fan

I have officially lost all hope in Ron Washington. What a moronic choice. Andruw Jones…really? There is no logic for this. None. Get him out.

  • Ryans Dad

Why would Tampa Bay do this to us, they should have mailed in this game like they have been doing since Kasmir left. They’ve screwed us twice this year now!

  • Buck

    A. Jones made contact … I was thinking shallow pop-up center.

  • Ranger Fan

I just can’t stomach this. Ron Washington didn’t give his team the best chance to win from the get go today…and he didn’t help it late in the game. Just plain bad.

  • Evan Grant

I do not understand letting Andruw Jones hit against the right-handed Grant Balfour. That should have been Borbon or Hamilton. Or Michael Young, who is apparently available to pinch hit. I do think decisions over the last two innings of this game will be questioned. And I can’t say I’d blame anybody for doing so.

  • Ron W

    sorry guys. I apologize.

  • Buck

Down to the last out …

    Come on CRUSH!!!!

  • Ryans Dad

The baseball gods have changed their tune. Cue the virgin?

  • Jeff

Ron Washington absolutely should have pinch hit Borbon for Jones. All Jones has done since July is swing for the fence. Borbon could have tried to find a way to get on base instead of swinging out of his shoes. And when he gets on base, he creates havoc with his wheels. I don’t understand that decision at all. Bad managing. Plain and simple.

  • Evan Grant

@Ron W: Sorry to have to do it. But I just don’t want to turn this nasty. Frustrated? Hey, I understand. You know where I’m coming from.

  • Ryans Dad

    7-4 Angels now

  • Keith M

It must be killing Michael Young to watch this from the bench.

  • Ruffian

Lot’s of things that I think can and will be questioned. But I go with leaving in FF too long as a huge issue. It was pretty obvious that he didn’t have his best stuff.

  • Ryans Dad

Wouldn’t you rather see Hammy with a runner on and 2 outs in the 9th?

  • Evan Grant

Angels have re-extended the lead to 7-4 against A’s.

  • Ron W

Love the website. Great Season and see you all next year. What kind of things are you doing to keep us updated with the rangers?

  • Evan Grant

    Going to ninth.

    Hamilton must not be available.

  • Buck

@Evan: Wash has a lot of faith in Andruw. Must be based on the distant past and not this season and certainly not since July.

I agree that it was a questionable choice.

  • Ranger Fan

Andruw Jones has not hit a homerun since July 8…nearly 3 months. The only reason he could be in a game is for a power righy. Clearly no power. I don’t get it. OK I know…I’ve said it all day. But I just don’t understand at all…I don’t think there’s any reasoning that can me made other than givin the nod to one of your guys. Also, I’d rather see Young here.

  • James

So NOW he’s going to let Borbon bat against a lefty? WTF?

  • James

    Sorry, different Cormier.

  • Kyle

The managing of this team in the last 2 innings today (bullpen use/pinch hitting) was American Legion level..This team will not get over the top with Ron Washington as their manager…

  • Keith M

    This one hurts.

  • Ryans Dad

    There is your season folks

  • Ranger_Rick

Step away for a few minutes to connect my wife’s new computer to our wireless network and what happens.. Frankie gives up the game. This is just frustrating. I was looking forward to at least going to LAA with even a remote shot (sure it would require a sweep minimum) but I think the Ray’s played spoilers today. Well, at least the season ain’t over yet and miracles still can happen. Well… maybe next year.

  • Evan Grant

5:13: Well, this one will be EXTREMELY difficult to stomach. Lot of questions to be answered. Not sure they will be. Steve Busby just stepped out there and said some mistakes were made by the manager and the pitchers. Spill your guts here. It appears the Rangers may be walking right into a potential AL West championship celebration. If the Angels hold on to their three-run ninth inning lead (which Rangers couldn’t do), they will reduce magic number to two. Any Los Angeles win over the next four days will eliminate the Rangers.

  • Ranger Fan

I guess we say what we can about every adversity…good learning experience. This team will most likely mean the Rangers will watch the Angels celebrate the division win this week. That should fuel the fire to work hard again this off-season and in the spring. You know what they say…a team usually has to have its heart broken before they’re ready to make the jump to the next level.

  • Texas_Rocks

Why are Rangers Fans such nitwits when it comes to baseball knowledge. DID RON WASHINGTON WIN THE GAME YESTERDAY, OR FRIDAY???????? NO!!!!! SO HOW IN THE HELL CAN HE LOSE A GAME IF HE CAN’T WIN ONE????? EXPLAIN THAT TO ME ONLY IF YOU’RE A MORON BECAUSE YOU CAN’T EXPLAIN THAT…. IF YOU CANNOT WIN A GAME, YOU CERTAINLY CANNOT LOSE IT!!!!! ODay, CJ and Frankie LOST that game. They were a part of MANY Rangers wins this year, but TODAY THEY, NOT RW, LOST THE GAME!!!!!!!

  • Kyle

Texas_Rocks is my new favorite poster..he knows where the caps lock keys are–he’s allsome

  • matt

RW didn’t lose the game today; he just didn’t make the decisions that put his team in the best position to win. At the end of the day FF is the one who lost the game; he hasn’t been the same closer since he was injured earlier in the year.

  • Buck

@Texas Rocks: Didn’t you know that Managers never win games, but they can lose them.

Great job by BMAC. Gives one hope for next year.

I’m not has hard on Wash for pinch hitting A. Jones … he obviously has a Jones for Jones.

Not putting yanking Hank, moving Crush over to first and have Omar or German at 3rd … well, that was inexcusable especially when it cost arguably 2 games this year already.

  • Ron W

At Texas_Rocks: Thank you very much Texas_Rocks. You can now pick up the $10 check for the good comment.

  • Keith M

Francisco was good early in the season but I think I’m ready to see the Rangers get someone else to close next year. Of course, given the payroll constraints, that won’t be easy.

  • Ranger Fan

So Hamilton was available and not used. Young was available. And yet…Andruw Jones still hit. You aren’t helping yourself Ron.

  • Lamar in PA

Wow, got in the car to drive home from visiting my parents up 5-0 with 1 out in the 8th, got home to a loss. As I’d posted before, I hadn’t really bought into the notion that they could revive their run at the Angels, but it was fun to imagine it for a couple days. The big question this game raises for next year is “are Francisco-Wilson-O’Day a championship back end of a bullpen?” Wilson and Francisco get a lot of saves, but they also absolutely detonate a lot more often then most ‘good’ bullpens do. I know the performances of bullpens and closers change more from year to year than other personelle, but it is worth asking if Frankie and/or Wilson might not be guys to sell high on and try someone else. I don’t honestly know how I’d answer that question, I just know this is a game you’d GOT to win, and it hasn’t been the first such game we didn’t this year. I also know that RW’s hatred of defensive substitutions is really becoming a pain. How about Jackie Moore in all this, people’s visceral dislike for RW tends to get the guy who’s supposed to be our “strategy guru” a free pass.

  • DC

FF was perfect as a closer till rw ran him out 4 days in a row. Went on dl. Never the same since.

  • BigTexx

Can anyone elaborate on what Busby said on the post-game show? I don’t get it here in Vegas. Thanks

  • john in clearwater

I blame myself. I should have had the family doing the wave.

  • john in clearwater

I think I just coughed up a hairball.

  • gordosan

You can’t leave Davis at 3rd with a five run lead in the eighth. Big time mistake by Washington.

  • selke99

OK, I’m no Wash lover, and maybe I’m not as big on the technical stuff as you all are. But I’m having a hard time understanding how you can blame Wash for not having the foresight to see Davis making an error at 3B in the 8th inning and having Vizquel in at 3B. I was at the game against LAA where Blalock committed an error at 1B in the 9th, and I guess I understood all the posters saying Wash should have made position changes for the 9th. Now I’m reading that Wash should have made position changes for the 8th because of Davis’ error at 3B. To me, that’s an incredible amount of hindsight. Evan, is that some kind of rule that with nine outs or less you make those defensive changes?

  • selke99

In my opinion, they lost because our usual trusty trio of O’Day, CJ, and FF could not hold a 3 run lead with 5 outs to go. I don’t think that’s asking too much of them, even with one error. What the heck is CJ doing hitting a batter? Walks too.

  • KJ

Today, the decision that beats me the most is leaving Frankie in there when he clearly didn’t have anything. It reminded me of the blow-up against Boston. While Davis’ error hurt in the 8th, we still went to the 9th with a 3-run lead and our closer.

The whole attitude of I’ll run with my closer, even when he clearly doesn’t have his best stuff, is just not a way of winning games.

CJ and O’Day could have done better too, but the simple fact is that Frankie couldn’t get people out in the ninth and he got left in there to give up the game. I would have been just as heartbroken if Feliz had come in and given up the runs, but I would have at least felt like we were giving it all we could to win the game.

Frustration. That’s what it was like to be at that game.

As far as a manager can’t win or lose a game, oh yes he can. Normal thinking is a manager makes a difference in winning 5 games and losing 5 games a year. This was easily one of the ones he lost this year.

Who’s winning games pulling their closer. You don’t do that unless its a permanent change. Almost every manager in the game does exactly what Wash did in sticking with Frankie. Feliz is great and maybe he should be made the permanent closer. However he wasn’t exactly dominant in the minors this year. After his brilliant start he has been human lately. That is pitching in mostly non pressure situations. He would likely struggle in the closers role right now. Frankie has closed a lot of games for Wash. No reason to pull him in a game we had to have.

@Scott- I would agree with you on that if said closer had his best stuff. But this was a clear case that he did not and we saw against Boston here at home what can happen.

By turn, I wish I remembered what team it was against, but Frank came in during the ninth of a really tough game and was clearly pitching very well and got a couple of bad bounces. Wash left him in, rightfully so, and he ended up inducing a double play to end the game.

So please tell me why you would leave a pitcher in who clearly didn’t have his best stuff in “a game we had to have.” It just doesn’t compute.

KJ, that could be the LAA game I was at last Sat. We’re up by one run, bases loaded with 1 out, and Andrus made a 4-3 DP.

Mistakes by Wash in this game:
    - Playing Andruw Jones
    - Pulling McCarthy with a shutout and a low pitch count
    - Not pinch hitting for Jones in the 9th with Hamilton on the bench
    - Not making his defensive adjustments in the 8th
    - Leaving Frankie out there too long

Other guys made mistakes, sure. The bullpen wasn’t hitting the zone. Andrus was thrown out twice on steal attempts that wouldn’t have really helped the team if he had been successful. Davis made an error. Jones showed up to the ballpark and pretended to be a ballplayer.

All of these are things the players goofed up. Any one of Washington’s errors by themselves might be forgivable, but all of them together cost the team this game.

To Texas Rocks: your logic is flawed. If Washington decided to call on Guardado or Murphy as the starting pitcher and they gave up 300 runs without recording an out and Wash refused to pull them, I guess you’d say he still didn’t lose the game – the players didn’t perform.

Wash is given a roster of players, and it’s up to him how to use them. If he uses them according to their strengths and they fail, then he is not to blame. If he uses them in ways that unnecessarily expose their weaknesses, then he is to blame.

This one ultimately goes on him.

And I still like him enough that I want him back for next year.
