ANAHEIM, Calif. - Out of the lineup for a second consecutive day, OF Josh Hamilton summed up his situation for the final week of the season this way:
“I’m playing when I’m able to play,” he said of his injured back Monday afternoon. “It hasn’t stopped hurting. The three injections I got helped, and for a while, it didn’t get worse, but once I got out there and ran, it started up again. [Sunday] I couldn’t go. Today, I feel a little better. I can probably pinch hit, but if I got on base, they’d have to run for me.”
The Rangers lineup on Monday did include the return of Michael Young, who will be at third base. Young will bat second after missing all but one at bat of the last 27 days with a severely strained hamstring.
After missing three weeks due to a pinched nerve in his back, Hamilton returned to the lineup on Friday. He played two games, then sat out on Sunday.
“If I played anoter whole game, it would probably be the same situation,” he said. “I’d have to take a couple of days off to rest it.”
Hamilton has been limited to 89 games this season due to a number of physical issues that started with a strained oblique muscle and then included a sports hernia. Hamilton said the sports hernia, a tearing of the muscle in the abdominal wall, made it impossible for him to do all of his back stabilization exercises and that the weakened back led to the pinched nerve.
Hamilton added that no surgical procedure is planned on the back, but he was told when he first injured it that three or four weeks of complete rest should alleviate the problem. He should be able to get that rest in the offesason. Asked if it would be in his best interests to not play again this season, Hamilton said: “Absolutely.”
I think it would be in the best interest of the Rangers to let this guy go.
He had a great run but it’s time to move on.
Evan,
What is the rest of the line-up for tonight’s game?
this explains somewhat the decision to not PH for Jones (they wanted Borbon to bat for TT). Still, I would have had my leadoff hitter lead off the inning. Could have batted Pudge for TT if you felt he was over-mathced (or MY).
Lineup Borbon LF -Michael Young – 3rd base
David Murphy – RF – Byrd CF – Blaylock – DH
Kinsler – 2nd base – Davis – 1st base – Pudge-C – Andrus -SS
The 2010 starting OF assumption has typically been Cruz, Borbon, and Hamilton with Murphy as the 4th OF. This assumption tends to make Byrd nice, but probably not a big deal to let him walk and take the draft choice.
Hamilton’s health issues calls that typical assumption into question.
I just hope some team doesn’t offer him silly money and the Rabgers can resign him.
Also, Hamilton made a huge mistake not taking the Ranger’s contract extension offer. He felt insulted as I recall. Factor in the alcohol incident, poor hittting, and injuries. Wonder what the offer is now if it even exists?
Why cry over Josh when you still have Andruw!!
Good yuntift Grant!!
oh c’mon guys the sky is not falling with hamilton……..sure you can’t count on him for a full season and sure he is prone to injuries……but c’mon at 550k he’s cheap……and he’s tied up for 3 more years in arbitration so no one’s going to do anything either way quickly on this one……but the rangers should figure out who is going to play center when josh is not there next year……….
is this where we’re doing the in-game chat tonight?
