The Depot: At Least One More Night of Rangers-Angels News, Notes and Baseball Talk

Rangers lose, eliminated from wild card contention. It will be 10th consecutive season without a playoff berth for club.

FINAL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Total
Rangers 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 2
Angels 1 1 0 2 0 0 1 0 x 5

flyingfish39:11: The Angels played a video tribute to their season before the game. It was really beautifully done. Everything this organization does seems to be done in a first-class manner. That’s why even though the Angels are Texas’ biggest rival in the division, it’s hard to hate them very much. Coming to games here is always a pleasant experience.

9:17: Marlon Byrd, who seemed to injure his knee in the ninth inning last night, definitely did on Tuesday. He went face-first into the area just past first after grounding out to end the first. He had a lot of trouble putting  weight on his right knee. He tried to “walk it off” but the knee twice appeared to give out on him. He was eventually helped off the field and replaced by Craig Gentry. I think it’s very likely that Byrd has played his last game of the season, too.

9:28: Now official, Boston lost 8-7. A win tonight would allowe Rangers to move within five of wild card with five games to play. Again, any Red Sox win or Rangers loss the rest of the week would result in the Rangers being eiminated from the AL playoff picture.

9:44: Manager Ron Washington said he doesn’t envision pulling any of his starters from their schediled outings the rest of the way. He might want to rethink that in the case of Scott Feldman. Feldman is scheduled to make his 31st start of the season on Sunday at Seattle. Feldman has struggled mighily in his last two outings. Feldman has now pitched 182 innings this season, 17 more than he did all of last season. He could use a break.

9:55: Rangers current string of innings without scoring is 13. Only third longest streak of month, follwoing 26- and 22-inning skids.

10:32: Scott Feldman has allowed 11 runs in seven innings over his last two starts to push his ERA above 4.00. It’s 4.02 – if Guillermo Moscoso doesn’t allow either of the inherited runners to score. Feldman should not pitch Sunday. Pitch the game out of the bullpen, but don’t pitch Feldman. He appears spent.

10:50: Word on Byrd: He has a right hip capsule strain. That doesn’t sound promising.

11:26: Supposition from noted injury expert analyst, Will Carroll, is that Byrd has what is known as a “rider’s strain,” most common in horse riders. It is usually, Carroll says (via twitter): “Painful, but not serious.”

11:47: Three runs before three outs or Rangers playoff hopes are officially done. Dead. Over. Rangers are already out of West. This would end Wild Card chase. Rangers would be six back of Boston, despite the Red Sox losing five straight and seven of last nine.

In a pinch, I can always hate Torii Hunter.

  • Ranger Fan

Wow Marlon Byrd is gutsy…I really hope we can get him back, and I didn’t say that 2 months ago.

  • Ryans Dad

    Hello—> Hello—>ello—> llo.

    Is anybody out there?

  • becca

same for me. but substitute torii for vlad

  • Ranger_ve

Marlon’s fall did not look good at all. This guy is really hurt.

  • Ryans Dad

Does this mean you are packing it in for the rest of the season Evan?

  • Ranger Fan

@Evan: I can respect while hate…no love lost for the Angels, espcially with their pansy like “motivation” tactics via Ian Kinsler.

  • Ranger_ve

@Lamar in PA : I live about five miles from tori’s house in prosper, trust me if you see it you’ll hate him even more LOL.

  • Buck

If the Rangers bring Byrd back, I will be very surprised. He’s been solid this year, but he’ll want a big contract (he needs a big contract).

Wash plays favorites for sure and Byrd is a favorite, but I can’t how it will financially work out.

  • Ryans Dad

I can’t respect any organization that’s had a movie as stupid as “Angels in the Outfield” made about it.

  • JohnnyMel

So Evan, are you really voting Feldman for Cy Young?

    http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/wilbur/2009/09/23/sizing_up_cy_young/

  • Buck

how can you vote for Feldman over Felix?

  • Buck

    or Grienke?

  • Evan Grant

@JohnnyMel, @Buck: I assume you get the joke. In Boston, I’ll live in infamy because I once left the MVP winner off my MVP ballot last year. Mind you, I voted for a Red Sox player first. And my vote did not change the outcome. But I’ll always be a punch line up there. ‘

Fine. So be it. But for the record: I don’t have an MVP or Cy Young ballot this year. I am voting on the AL Rookie of the Year. And here this Boston, Oakland and all other destinations: I’m planning on voting for Elvis Andrus, a Ranger, first. So deal with it.

  • Evan Grant

@Ryans Dad: I’m not packing it in, but I’m not sure if I will do a Depot tomorrow. I am planning to fly back to Texas mid-day and we’ll see how things develop from there.

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: Congrats on your new position back at DMN. I’ve certainly enjoyed this year chatting with you and all the others on Inside Corner. Being a Ranger fan so far away from DFW, it’s been great to have a community of fellow fans to turn to during the season. And what a roller coaster season it’s been!

I used to frequent the DMN blog before discovering Inside Corner, but I got really annoyed and fed up with it, not because of the writers (I liked Richard and the others there). What really got under my skin was the stupidity of most of the people who post comments there. The bulk of them seem to be asinine, trolling idiots who steal people’s names and are more interested in insulting the writers and posters than making substantive commentary about the team.

I’ll give it another try because I enjoy your work on the Rangers, but I’ll be gone again if the stupidity reigns on the comments as before.

Fellow fans, it’s been nice chatting with you all this season, and see you around the blogosphere next year (and in the off season!).

  • alan in SA

@Evan–how much do you think it costs to bring Pudge back and how much interest do you sense there is in doing so…he was best catcher on the team this year

  • becca

geez evan. i don’t know who hates you more. everyone in boston or the DMN blog commenters. you don’t have an easy task ahead of you.

  • Ryans Dad

    Feldman 6’5″
    Felix Hernandez 6’3″
    Jon Lester 6’2″
    Zack Greinke 6’2″

Historically, people tend to vote for the taller candidate. Other than that, I’ve got nothing. Furthermore, CC Sabathia is 6’7″.

  • JohnnyMel

@Evan – I wondered what the punch line was when I read that. Will you have any input concerning the blog layout at DMN? InsideCorner seems a lot cleaner and comment friendlier and DMN (though after reading comments there, I can see why).

  • Evan Grant

@Alan in SA: Talked to Pudge a bit today and he definitely wants to return. I think he’s open to whatever role the Rangers have for him. At this point, it would take some swallowing of pride to admit that a soon-to-be 38-year-old is still way ahead of the young catchers on the roster, but I do think that is the reality. From here, the Rangers would be smart to bring him back, but I’ve gotten no impression the Rangers are actively working on that.

@Becca: It’s a task, but we’ll address it head on and aggressively.

  • The Beer Guy

@Ryans Dad: The Beer Guy 5’10″…no votes for me! :(

  • IrishP1

Hey boys! It’s been one helluva season. I feel like I’m at the end of semester choir banquet. Ha!

  • becca

this might not be feldman’s best outing. hate to see the visit to the mound in the 2nd.

  • Brian

    @Evan–
Don’t you think you are missing the point when you say “I voted for a Red Sox player first. And my vote did not change the outcome.” The point is that even though your vote did not change the outcome, it was clearly the wrong guy. You should just own the mistake instead of trying to justify it. Good luck back at DMN.

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: Oh, one thing I forgot…Richard was doing live chat sessions during games (at least in the early part of the year, I suppose he kept it going). You should give those a try. Real-time chatting and having to approve user comments (thus blocking trolling a-holes) = a good thing.

  • IrishP1

Just saw an international friendly in………hockey?! WTF?!

  • Buck

@Evan: I kind of stressed right now, so I sorry I didn’t get the joke. Feldman hasn’t pitched like a CY candidate in a little while. In Oakland, I couldn’t tell if he wasn’t getting squeezed by the ump or he was just missing his spots. He did seem to get a little rattled when he didn’t get the calls.

If I had a vote, I would have voted for ELVIS too.

  • alan in SA

@Evan—are the front office egos so big that they can’t swallow pride to put the best team on the field? Pudge brings a lot to the table..helps young pitchers and young catchers while providing some of the clubhouse leadership you’re going to lose w/Eddie G and Byrd (probably) gone…I wouldn’t want to think that the powers that be couldn’t swallow their pride for that much being brought to the table

  • becca

it’s hard to believe it’s already hockey time.

  • Buck

Feldman got out of it. Whew…

  • IrishP1

Still, Feldy has only given up 2 runs on 2 hits. He should be ok.

  • IrishP1

@becca – home opener saturday night I believe.

  • becca

feldy’s good. but i’m sorry, if you’re named scott, you’re nickname is automatically scooter. it’s a rule. i’m sure of it.

  • Buck

    11 straight scoreless innings …

  • The Beer Guy

Oh yay, hockey season’s here. (sarcasm alert)

Being in Canada this means people will think of nothing else until June. Sigh. Oh well, at least it brings pretty women out to the sports bars!

  • Ranger Fan

@Evan: I think you’re selling Salty a little short by saying Pudge is way ahead. (Not that Salty is Pudge in his prime) but he was a bright spot this year. Great behind the plate. The pitchers worked well with him and his blocking and pitch calling was really good. I’d venture to say no one on this team worked harder than him, when he was healthy. His hitting needs to improve but he’s got an off-season to work on that and only get better in the field. I’d be fine to go with Salty as the starter and Pudge backing him up, playing a day or 2 a week. You really think he’s that far behind?

  • IrishP1

@alan: I don’t have a problem with resigning pudge, with the right price. That being said, you force Teagarden back to the minors and would be forced to either trade or simply release Max Ramirez. How long do you hold on to an old friend in favor of the future?

  • IrishP1

@becca: i don’t think Scott Erickson was ever dubbed Scooter. Pretty sure of that.

  • IrishP1

@TBG: I’ll be at Fenway this year for some hockey. Can’t wait!!!!

  • becca

i’m not ready to give up on teagarden or ramirez yet. i just think their sample size has been to small. i would hate pushing back their development because both pudge and salty were kept. i would suggest just keeping either pudge or salty and have the other teagarden and max in the wings. but that’s just me.

  • Buck

@Ranger Fan: i agree w/ your thoughts on Salty. Like seeing Pudge w/ the Rangers, but it’s probably time to move on. He’d be a nice back-up and spot starter. However, I don’t think TT has proven that can or can’t play everyday at this level. What do you do w/ him if you bring Pudge back?

  • alan in SA

anyone who thinks the catching was up to what is needed for a playoff run next year on a team that looks ready to get there saw something I didn’t see…let’s keep Pudge, sent TT back to minors and cut Max..both TT and Max WAY underperformed expectations this year…I want to win next year..@Irish..the “future” begins in 2010

  • becca

@irishp1: i guess every rule has to have an exception. and to be fair, i said i was only pretty sure, not totally positive.

  • Ranger Fan

@brian: Who are you to say who’s right and who’s wrong? If he felt Youk was the MVP then it’s his vote to cast. It’s not like there’s a vendetta against the Boston 2nd baseman. An honest vote or answer is to be respoected.

In other news…who are you guys cheering for in the postseason? I’ll probably go for the Rockies or anyone but LA, Boston or NY.

  • Buck

Max played in the WBC and for some reason the guys that play in the WBC don’t always have good MLB seasons when they come back. Spring Training is probably more important to some players than others. He was also hurt for part of this season. Max will be fine next year.

  • Ranger Fan

In a perfect world, I’d keep Pudge to back up Salty and trade TT or Max. Whoever we kept would begin the year in AAA.

  • IrishP1

@ RF: Wouldn’t it be awesome if by the grace of God, the Braves got in and got to play ultimate spoiler for EVERYONE?!

  • alan in SA

Max totally lost a year, regardless of why. Let him earn his spot here. Again, the future is NOW, not 3 yrs from now as it has always been before…we need PROVEN players NOW

  • Buck

@RF: Rockies … ya gotta root for Houston Street.

  • IrishP1

I’d like to see Bobby Cox have one more shot at glory.

  • Ranger Fan

@Irish: Well, have several friends that are Braves fans. I can’t watch them be happy while I’m sad…selfish? Probably. I like the Rockies story…

  • becca

probably root for rockies. they’re fun to watch. after that, i’ll root for the AL team that isn’t the yankees or red sox or angels. i think now it’s in between detroit and minnesota

  • Buck

I’d like to see the Braves get into the postseason as well.

I just can’t root for Baaston, the Yankees, or LAA … just can’t.

  • Ryans Dad

I guess I missed the article yesterday about Evan going back to DMN. That does explain a lot of the posts and references to the DMN website last night and today. It is true that I am aloof and possibly mildly retarded.
Anyhow, I wanted to throw in my two cents.

To all here at the Corner: It’s been a blast having people to converse with about the Rangers. I have learned more about professional baseball in the last 5 months than in the last 33 years combined. Hope to see you all again next season.

To Evan: This website is great and we are all in your debt for creating it. I really believe nobody else in Dallas could have pulled this off. I will go out of my way to find your opinions on everything Rangers for the rest of my days.

GO RANGERS. 2010 A.L. West Champions? We will see!

  • Buck

LAD is off my list, although I like Kershaw. Manny’s on the juice and they signed Padilla … not my cuppa tea.

  • IrishP1

We’ve seen the Rockies story played out though. I liked it the first time, right up to the point where Boston showed why they’re the Red Sox and the Rockies were, well, the Rockies. Feel good stories are never good second time around.

  • Ranger Fan

Oh gag me…I cannot imagine seeing Vicente pitching in the World Series. I’m sure he’d be shootin’ Texas the finger in his head….

@Irish: Or do they? They’ve been solid for a while now. Oh and the Red Sox are TOAST! I thin’ they’re one and done…but we’ll see.

  • Evan Grant

@Brian: I admitted my mistake in leaving Pedroia off the ballot. I tried to admit a number of times on the air in Boston one day last fall. That still wasn’t good enough. The bottom line is I made a mistake by not including him on the ballot. I make no apologies about voting for Kevin Youkilis first.

@Alan in SA: In regards to front office egos, there is no accounting for ego. Everybody has one. You never know when it will flare up in a potentially negative way. But the club would have to admit poor evaluation on either Teagarden or Salty if elects to keep Pudge and jettison somebody else.

  • Buck

Baaston is the worst. I guess it goes back to hearing all of those obnoxious Baaston fans at the BPIA. They have a right to spend their dollars any way they wish but they are as irratating as Jim Knox.

  • IrishP1

Red Sox always, I repeat, ALWAYS lollygag before the playoffs. Then, out of nowhere, they come out like a completely different team. I never count them out, regardless of the circumstances.

  • Ryans Dad

    @Ranger Fan,

this year the evil villian will be played by the Yankees. I will root for Colorado though once our guys have officially been exterminated.

  • Evan Grant

@ALL: In regards to the playoffs, I have no issue pulling for the LA Angels. I like the way they play the game. As for the NL, if the Braves can pull things off, of course, I’m going to be behind them. My dad, who turns 86 in January, would love to see his beloved Dodgers make it and if that would make him happy, I’ll stifle my distaste for Padilla long enough for him to enjoy things.

  • Buck

The Murph goes yard!!! The scoreless streak is officially over. Now, let the scoring begin.

  • Ryans Dad

History repeating itself. Could be a long week for the die hards

  • alan in SA

@Evan–you swallowed your ego/pride over the Pedroia issue and you didn’t influence a pennant chase..I hope the powers that be are as good at admitting mistakes and keeping their eyes on the goal

and for what it’s worth, I thought Youk was a better pick, too

  • IrishP1

Here’s a fun one: given the teams that already have a spot or could have a spot, what’s your dream WS matchup for this season.

PS – What’s up with all the booing in this series?! Kinsler yesterday and Murph today?! The hell?!

  • Ranger Fan

@Evan: I completely respect the Angels and the way they play the game. They have a great organization. But I can’t root for them…I might feel my heart warm a little in regards to the Adenhart situation and the emotional celebration that would occur but that’s it….

  • Buck

Having grown up around the Braves and their AA and AAA affiliates, I still follow them. Old habits are hard to break. Savannah Braves games during the summer were a blast!!!

  • Buck

Man, am I the only one that thought Evan voted correctly to leave the midget off the ballot?

  • becca

are the ballots always made public? i guess i’ve never paid that much attention to the mvp voting.

  • becca

i meant the system of voting, etc.

  • Buck

Dream WS matchup this year? That’s tough.

  • Evan Grant

@Becca: The ballots are made public. And when at the DMN, we’ve always printed my full ballot in the paper, regardless of the award I voted on. I will do that this year for Rookie of the Year.

  • Buck

I still don’t know what’s up w/ Feldman’s control the last two starts. The pitches look close but he’s barely missing. He can cut down on the free passes and keep his fastball down in the zone, he’s pretty darn good.

  • IrishP1

MY 3 WS matchups for this season:

    1. Dodgers/Yankees – it’d be fun to see some of the old Brooklyn/NYY highlights and what not. And I’d root for the Dodgers, obviously.

    2. Atlanta/NYY – THE ULTIMATE REVENGE SERIES. Plus, seeing Bobby have one more shot.

    3. Dodgers/Angels – The Battle of L.A., plus, with it being west coast, most games wouldn’t interfere with NCAA football.

  • Buck

@Irish: Yeah, I would watch Dodgers/Yankees and that’s the matchup that the TV execs are craving.

  • becca

is maddux trying to start a playoff beard?

  • Buck

Do the Rangers lead the league in walked in runs?

  • Evan Grant

@IrishP1: How about Twins-Braves? Talk about some flashbacks. And they are the two hottest teams in contention. Although, its entirely possible neither makes it.

  • IrishP1

Dodgers/Yanks is the only WS I could tolerate seeing the Yankees in. Otherwise, I want them one and done.

  • Buck

If Hicks sells the Rangers, do Wash and JD automatically go?

  • Buck

    Braves/Twins would be good.

  • IrishP1

@Evan: true, but then you would also have to consider Twins/Cardinals.

  • IrishP1

What would be the WS that would have the WORST TV ratings?

    Rockies/Tigers?
    Twins/Phillies?
Cardinals/any AL team other than NYY or BOS?

  • Buck

With their bullpen situation or should I say closer situation, Phillies look vulnerable. Cards look tough this year.

  • Buck

I think the Twins make it. They really played the Rangers tough this year. Joe Mauer is a BEAST.

  • john in clearwater

Feldman spent, Byrd and Hamilton done, Young jogging the bases. Bullpen exploding. Can we just call the season now before anybody else gets hurt? Too late. Davis isn’t starting. Andruw Jones is probably rested, though. Would that be considered good news?

  • Buck

I haven’t seen Moscoso at all this year, but he looks pretty good. Does he start in AAA next year or long relief w/ the Rangers.

  • Ranger Fan

@john: Nah, he’d probably get in there and produce and then infuriate all of us bc he did nothing when it mattered…

  • Buck

@John in clearwater: It’s better than watching the Cowboys. For some reason, I just can’t watch’em this year.

  • john in clearwater

Evan – Frank Francisco’s era is now around 4.00. Is he still a premium closer? Better yet, is he the Ranger’s closer in 2010 or do you start grooming Feliz?

  • Ranger Fan

My gosh…those fans are obnoxious tonight.

  • john in clearwater

I spent the first 33 years of my life in Dallas and was a big Cowboys fan. Now I pull for the Bucs when I watch football. Jerry Jones just rubs me the wrong way for some reason. Cowboys still second to Bucs still. Rangers over the Rays even though I know the bench coach for the Rays. I think that bothers him a little, but I can’t help it.

  • john in clearwater

I’m just going to randomly post for the next five minutes until midnight east coast time, at which time I’ll turn in to a pumpkin. Thank you in advance for tolerating me.

  • Evan Grant

@Buck: I see Moscoso at Triple-A to start next season.

@John in clearwater: The interesting question regarding the Rangers, Neftali Feliz and thje Rangers is whether the club will move him into the rotation or leave well enough alone.

  • Jack Daddy

    1. I think other than the high KOs, Salty had a salty season (rock me). His D was superb until his shoulder gave out. This WAS his first full season as a starter. If not for the hype, we would have been happy with the offense from 1st year starter at C. I predict a strong season improving on this one.
    2. I think I’m rooting for the Angels. Impressed by what they persevered through this year. Don’t want the Twins or Braves or Rockies to win, because I think we are better than them (Phillies too).
    3. I dislike Boston, their fans (at least the fans that are FROM DFW and LIVE in DFW and show up at the BALLPARK) and their midget SS more than anything.
    4. For all those that think rookie pitchers should never have a rough outing and think Holland is over-rated and not any good because he had a 5 start rough stretch, mosey over to the box score of the Sox game and check out what Buchholz went through tonight (and yes, I think he is a stud too).
    5. Feldman absolutely should not pitch this weekend.
    6. The Rangers should not bring Byrd back on anything other than a 1 yr deal for $5MM. At the same time, Byrd is a fool if he turns down a mutli year deal. He has to do what’s right by his family, even if it means playing in Pittsburgh. However, with his age, his knee and this economy, I don’t think its a slam dunk that he gets said multi year offer.
    7. Borbon’s ability to play CF next year is vital, IMO, to a successful roster construction.
    8. Elvis is a fine choice for ROY, but don’t underestimate what the kid in Chicago is doing. Yes he played less games. But you can flip that and say that as a result of that, his #s look that much better by comparison. By the way, I’ve heard him quoted to a mutual friend as saying he absolutely deserves it over Elvis or Porcello (these guys really do get into and care about things like this) – reason enough for me to really hope Elvis wins it.
    9. I think this team moves Chris Davis for a RH bat that can play the same positions as Chris (this team is too LF and it will get worse when Byrd is gone). If ownership is settled or they can move Millwood, then I’m sticking to my Garrett Atkins prediction.
    10. I can’t wait for late February.

Bonus – alex rodriguez (don’t dignify that d. bag by calling him by his self appointed nick name) and Teixeira will choke in the playoffs.

    Take care all.

  • john in clearwater

Do we bring Grilli back next year? Even if it’s just a minor league contract?

  • john in clearwater

I vote for bringing Vizquel back, by the way.

  • Buck

The whole Jerry thing also rubs me the wrong way. The billion dollar monument that he built w/ taxpayers money is a little over the top. Personal decisions and coaching decisions just make you think that they may never win another playoff game. NCAA football is more entertaining … I catch the Rangers and college football now. Well, that’s not entirely true. I am also a high school football fanatic (season tickets).

  • Evan Grant

@John in clearwater: I’d risk a minor league offer to Grilli.

  • Ranger Fan

    @Jack Daddy:
    1. What a d-bag…anyone who actually says they deserve an award over someone else…doesn’t. And all bias aside, I don’t think anyone but Elvis (I can deal with Porcello) deserves it. No one played a more vital role better than Elvis. No one.
    2. I’d be very sad to see Chris Davis go. Smoak is not ready to play up here (unless he has a monster spring) and everyone knows Davis’ d is better than Smoak. So…Smoak better get his bat in order.
    3. I will take great pleasure in seeing the hated Yankees choke. Oh what fun…

  • Jack Daddy

@Buck – Jerry rubs me the rub way too many times, but I think the breakdown on the Stadium is $300MM of public money and $900MM of his own. It was supposed to be 50/50 and he doubled the price tag. Again, my recollection of the facts could be incorrect.

  • john in clearwater

Jack – 1) I think the Rangers will wait to see what Byrd is offered by others and then consider their options. His knee issue tonight will bear watching. 2) I think the club holds on to Davis. Smoak is coming and may be a part of the right handed hitter solution. I would be cautious about dealing him too quickly.

Midnight now on the East Coast. Long day for me. Night all.

  • Buck

@Jack Daddy: Your posts are always entertaining.

    Byrd’s gone.

Why wouldn’t you pitch Feldman this weekend?

I’m with you on Holland. This was a learning season for him, and next year could be lights out.

I am also encouraged by McCarthy’s comeback at the end of the year. He can pitch at a high level.

  • Jack Daddy

    @RF -

Re/ #1, couldn’t say it better myself. Very douchey.

    Re/ #3, I agree.

Re/ Davis – i would be fine moving him in a good deal and I would be fine keeping him. I just think the hope or expectaion that all of sudden his strike out rate is going to drop below 30% is dreaming. Much like people thought Adam Dunn would suddenly “get it”. He has his spots and they aren’t changing. But again, I think he is a servicable major league player (with a good hitting coach), so I’m fine keeping him. I view Atkins as an upgrade and merely in need of a change of scenery (albeit a much more expensive upgrade).

  • Buck

@Jack Daddy: Borbon is interesting. Wash won’t play him in CF because he thinks he’s a liability but plays Davis at 3rd w/ Visquel on the bench.

If Byrd’s gone and Borbon doesn’t start in CF, does Josh start in CF and bring Borbon along slowly?

He also trots out Nellie in RF. He has a good arm but he’s skaaakkkkyyy in the outfield.

  • Ranger Fan

@Jack Daddy: I just don’t think there are many who can stretch it like CD. His defense is underrated. We’ve seen great improvement at the plate from him and I think he’s supposed to be playing winter ball so next year looks to be even better. However, I do have a giant case of Chris Davis homerism so…but seriously. I think he has the most effortless homerun swing. It’s nuts. Maybe the swing equal to the Mr. Happy effortless delivery of a 100 mph fastball.

@Buck – for the reasons Evan laid out above (just gassed with a career high workload).

also very encouraged by the season McCarthy had. I still wonder if he wouldn’t be great in the Feliz 6th/7th inning bullpen role (if his shoulder can hold up in teh pen).

I would also do a grilli minor league deal.

@John – I imagine they would love to hold him, but I know they think they are too lefthanded. They can’t sign a F.A., so trade is the only option. Then you factor in which one of the 4 OFs or Davis do you deal. Cruz is RH, so it doesnt help situation. Josh has a very low value. It comes down to Murphy and Davis (they aren’t moving Borbon). I think Davis could bring more in a trade. But I could see them moving Murphy instead.

    Will be fun to follow.

    @Buck:

    1. Byrd’s future is a mystery. He wants to stay here and manager Ron Washington wants him to stay here. Figuring out the financials, that is going to be difficult.

    2. Feldman just looks gassed. No reason to really pitch him. He’s extended himself by about 20 innings over his previous professional high. He’ll be in perfect position to jump to 200 innings next year. Just don’t want to push a guy who appears to have hit the wall. Bad things happen to confidence or physical health in those situations.

    3. If Holland learns as much from this year as Tommy Hunter did from 2008, he will be a stud. But you can’t simply count on a guy to automatically make that kind of jump.

  • Jack Daddy

@buck – If Borbon isn’t ready opening day, I don’t know that he ever will be (seems strange that 2 monthts of extra seasoning would make him ready), but assuming he needs a 1/2 season, why not Josh? I think too much is being made of the wear/tear factor. Does he need to move? No doubt. But 2 months there isn’t going to all of sudden ruin his shelf life.

In fact, I could argue that guy will only be here 2 more years – why not ride him while you have him? I don’t see a long term deal (do you really want him long term anyway) or him holding up even in a corner or at DH. Its not life playing RF in this Park is forgiving on the body. And Greer was a walking medical patient in left.

  • JustSaying

@jack daddy so dodgers yankees and vicente on the mound pitching to a-fraud…….does he hit him first or second pitch?

  • Buck

I think Davis gets better next year. He’s shown the ability to adjust in the past and in AAA, he showed he can hit at that level. he’s still really young and I would like to see him stay. I don’t think he has a lot of trade value now and you don’t want to give him away. Smoak needs to start in AAA, but if he’s the real deal then it is a good problem to have.

I don’t see the Rangers making any big trades or FA signings until the ownership situation is settled.

I have mixed feelings on the Millwood situation. I really don’t think he’s a number one starter on a playoff team but maybe next year Feldman or Holland can take his spot.

  • JustSaying

@evan i really really hope you don’t forget us in the off-season and send out an email or a twitter or candygram from mongo so we can all get together in the off-season………this socratic version of baseball must not end!

  • Jack Daddy

Btw, I agree with Evan re/ Holland next year. Again, look at Buchholz. That no hitter was what, 2 years ago? Look at Felix. Look at Beckett. He didn’t win even 15 for several years.

Now I do think Holland will improve next year, but I’m not predicting 17 win or anything. But I see a low 4 era and 13-15 wins. The key, as Evan said, will be improving like Hunter did. He has to be able to throw is slider/curve AND CHANGE for strikes in any count. Right now he can’t do that.

  • Jack Daddy

@justsaying – I suspect Padilla doesn’t play any games the rest of the way. He’s pitching for a K and he has to bat over there. That being said, would love to see him throw one at that a$$. Not to hurt him, but just dust him up a bit.

  • Buck

The Borbon situation is really puzzling to me. I agree w/ Jack Daddy if he’s not ready at the start of next year, then he may never be ready. You can play him in LF, but you need more production.

I don’t understand why Wash doesn’t think Borbon can play CF. I’ve seen him make some great plays out there and some not so great, but I think if he gets a chance he will improve. Not so w/ Nellie.

    And the dagger is twisting…

10:50: Word on Byrd: He has a right hip capsule strain. That doesn’t sound promising.

11:26: Supposition from noted injury expert analyst, Will Carroll, is that Byrd has what is known as a “rider’s strain,” most common in horse riders. It is usually, Carroll says (via twitter): “Painful, but not serious.”

  • Ranger Fan

Weird injury for Byrd. Not what I expected after seeing last night and tonight.

  • Evan Grant

@Just Saying: I thought you were in the Bay Area. Well, that one will be tough. But if you are in Dallas, we’ll have a get together or two. To appease Jack_Daddy and I, we’ll try to do something one playoff night at Louie’s. Pizza. Beer (or soft drinks). Baseball. Debates. What could go wrong?

  • Jack Daddy

@evan – i’m going to sleep but read somewhere this weekend that Holland and Maddux had been working on some mechanical adjustments the week prior to his last start. Any scoop on what those adjustments might have been? What concerns me about Holland is something Mike Bascik said (i know he’s somewhat of a blowhard, but he did play) – he said Holland’s change moves in on a righty (which it does) and therefore even if he fools them with it, they get the good part of the bat on it and the right rotational spin. Would love to hear Maddux’ take on this.

  • Evan Grant

@Just saying: Regarding Padilla vs. Yankees. The interesting matchup will be Teixeira. They HATE each other.

  • Buck

    Strop has a “live” arm.

If Hicks continues to own the team, Byrd is gone. I’d rather have Sheets than the Byrd and it may come down to money.

A solid RH bat would be a nice Christmas present.

  • Jack Daddy

Is that anything like the hip subluxation that Bo Jackson had?

  • Evan Grant

@Jack Daddy: He went to the full windup in his last start. Know that much. But the rest, I’m a little in the dark about. I will try to get some info.

  • Buck

@Evan: How many players or former team mates actually “like” Vincente?

Rumor has it that the original Buck and Vicente had a special relationship.

  • Evan Grant

@Jack Daddy: Was my first concern since that led to a necrosis of the hip and Jackson’s retirement. It’s possible a subluxation could be involved, but was never mentioned.

  • Evan Grant

@Buck: Showalter had some unkind things to say about Padilla in 2005, but much of that was swept away when the Rangers acquired him. That’s not that uncommon.

As far as teammates liking Padilla, I’ve not found any who regard him as a close friend. But those guys do exist and can be contributors. It’s just a situation where you don’t know what you are going to get and you are unsure of what you can and can’t rely on.

  • Jack Daddy

    My Christmas present?

Figgins, Vlad, Abreu and Lackey all get swiped away. Figgins is sort of like they’re Byrd. His 3B defense is insane and would create a leadoff void. Vlad is the presence in their lineup Hamilton is. Abreu was their Bradley. Lackey is Lackey.

They are alway going to have great resources, but would sure love for those 4 studs to go bye bye.

Then we just have to worry about Oakland…

  • Ranger Fan

@Evan: Oh how exciting! I can’t stand either one of them so it’s sure to end well for me. Did Tex hate him when they were here? Better yet…is there a player that does like him here?

Bad call…MY fired up. Like it.

  • Buck

@Evan: I thought Showalter was one of the reasons that the Rangers signed Padilla. They were on the same team in Arizona, and I thought I remember Showalter saying that Padilla had #1 starter stuff if he could get his head on straight or something to that effect.

  • Fred

@Evan-The team obviously needs a right handed bat. If lose Byrd and can’t sign/deal for one. A couple of questions about the system:1) Exactly what is Smoak’s problem from the right side. Is it fixable? Has he improved at all. Even thoogh splits weren’t even in college, as I recall, his avg. vs. LHP wasn’t bad, just a lot higher vs. RHP. 2)What is Tracy’s ceeiling? Can he build on this year? How far away. 3) I remember seeing that Moreland, altho a LHB, hit lefties as well or better than righties. Could he fill that hole against LHP?
Oter comment for next year is that I think Rangers’ biggest offense problem is pitch recognition/selection especially by young guys. Throw Borbon a breaking ball in the dirt with 2 strikes and he chases (plus has looked bad against LHP). Same with Davis (a bit better now). Nellie chases anything outside. Salty low breaking balls. Kins fly ball problem, I feel, is chasing the letter high FB, not his swing. Hammy looked bad on breaking balls in the dirt. TT just looked bad. Elvos not bad for a rook. MY, of course is best. Murph improving. Byrd impatient, but not bad.

  • Buck

If you think about it, the Rangers gambled a lot this season and several moves paid off.

    + Elvis/MY move
    + Bringing Holland up early
+ Sticking w/ Salty and spotting TT
    + Millwood pitched well
+ Moving Feldman back to starter
    + Signing Pudge
    + Patience w/ Feliz
+ MY had a GREAT year

    - Hamilton had a forgettable year
    - Davis struggled (stuck w/ him too long)
    - CJ was a rollercoaster
    - Franky remains a question mark
    - Wash’s game management
    - Padilla (need I say more)

Lot’s of decisions in the offseason without a lot of money in the bank.

  • Evan Grant

11:47: Three runs before three outs or Rangers playoff hopes are officially done. Dead. Over. Rangers are already out of West. This would end Wild Card chase. Rangers would be six back of Boston, despite the Red Sox losing five straight and seven of last nine.

  • Ranger Fan

CJ hasn’t been much of a roller coaster…actually top notch the vast majority of the year.

  • Mike E

    @Evan
What if Byrd’s hip injury requires offseason surgery. Do you think that greatly lessens his chance of getting a multi-year deal? And consequently does that increase the chance he re-signs with the Rangers on a one-year deal to prove he’s healthy?

  • Evan Grant

@Ranger Fan: Tex-Padilla feud began a year before Padilla joined Rangers and barely softened during time together. Padilla hit Tex twice while with Philly, got him hit once while with Tex.

@Buck: They traded for Padilla. Showalter knew what the Rangers were getting, but he was not lying when he said the guy had No. 1 stuff if he got his head on straight (paraphrasing you paraphrasing Showalter). Showalter never had issue with his stuff. Only the lack of competitiveness on occasion.

@Fred: Too many questions to handle in bottom of ninth. But I’ll tell you what the Rangers need more than a right-handed hitter – they need their lefties to produce. Look at the biggest contributors to this team. All of them – Young, Byrd, Kinsler, Cruz – were right handed. This year’s underachievers – Davis and Hamilton – both lefties.

  • Buck

Well … it is officially over.

Night all. Been a good year.
