Zac Crain and I are scheduled to talk to the great Marc Stein soon, and we’ll post his thoughts about all things Mavs and NBA tomorrow. But first, some takes on the big Dallas victory over San Antonio last night. Jump ball:

Sat in a rich friend’s seats behind the ESPN crew. Mike Tirico is not, I repeat, NOT on P90X.

The Los Mavs jerseys, to quote Zac Crain, “Look like something you’d buy at a street fair.”

After Josh Howard had 17 points early in the second, my buddy said, “He’s on par for an 18-point night.” So it was good to see that Howard did not shrink in the fourth quarter this time. His driving layup in the final minutes was more important than Kidd’s killer three in securing the win.

Tony Parker can score at will on the Mavs. I have no idea why he ever stopped shooting.

Damp did a heck of a job battling Tim Duncan, but he was aided in no small part by noted Simpsons character Joey Crawford, who didn’t call a foul every time Duncan flailed about like an epileptic octopus, which he does some 42 times a game.

Mad props to the guy at the AAC Chili’s bar at halftime who leaped backward when I barely brushed against him and yelled, “Charge!” He then laughed and said, “Sorry, Spurs fan. It’s what we do.”

It would be great to have Devin Harris because of his defense. But, man, I love watching Jason Kidd play basketball. He makes everything look easy.

I feel better about this Mavs team in that they showed some heart. I don’t feel like I saw any hint, though, that they can lock down a team defensively when they have to. San Antonio missed some open shots at the end, and that provided an exciting victory. That was great for one night. I don’t think it will carry us past one round of the playoffs. Hope I’m wrong.
