I used to think playing like a girl was a bad thing. Now I know better.
Blondes vs. Brunettes of Dallas put on its second annual powder puff football game Saturday to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. The idea started when the first match-up of Blondes vs. Brunettes was organized in Washington D.C. four years ago, and the success of the event sparked groups across the country to start their own game for Alzheimer’s research. A Houston chapter picked up the game in 2006, and Erin Finegold brought BvB to Dallas in 2008. (more…)
Normally, InsideCorner doesn’t promote events that we’re not directly involved in, even if it’s for a good cause. It’s not because we’re cold, heartless people, but there are truly too many charitable groups putting on worthy events for us to keep up with.
But when somebody combines a good cause with pizza, beer, and 22 girls running each other down on a football field, we tend to make an exception.
Which is why we’re more than happy to plug the Second Annual Blondes vs. Brunettes Powder Puff Football Game benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The game is Saturday, August 15 at SMU’s Westcott Field, with pre-game festivities getting underway at 7:00 p.m. and the game starting half an hour later.
You can make a donation here. For $25, you get a game ticket and entry to the after party at the Bryan Street Tavern where there will be… wait for it… free pizza and beer. I know having just graduated from college puts me in a demographic that tends to get overexcited about these kinds of things, but come on.
Our friends at Pappas Restaurants are hosting a special dinner to benefit Cowboys scouting assistant Rich Behm, who was paralyzed from the waist down during that freak May storm that toppled the practice bubble in Valley Ranch. We’re posting this press release because it brings together three things we love: Pappas Restaurants, a good cause and STEAK!
Pappas Bros. Steakhouse proudly hosts a charity dinner in honor of Rich Behm on July 19, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. (the restaurant is closed to general public that evening). Behm, a Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant, was seriously injured when the team’s practice facility tragically collapsed during a severe thunderstorm in May. His injury – a catastrophic fracture to the Thoracic spine – resulted in permanent paralysis from the waist down.
For those so inclined, here are some photos from the Rangers’ Triple Play charity event Sunday night at the Hilton Anatole. According to sources, a good time was had by all and much money was raised for charity. And, of course, the rookies were made to sing for their dinner.

"Yeah, but it looks good on you, Elvis." (Photo: Brad Newton)
They dress the rookies up as the cast of Anchorman (Chris Davis playing the Ron Burgundy role and Derek Holland no doubt as Brick) and they make them sing “Afternoon Delight.” This was all part of the annual “Triple Play” charity function last night at the Hilton Anatole and, as usual, it was a big hit. I’ve been three of the last four years – did not make it last night due to near narcoleptic conditions – and every time it’s been creative and funny and the players are in good spirits. And in the past, that’s been with a bad team. Can only imagine what atmosphere was like last night.
OK, so, offer up your best caption here and win a prize. I don’t know what’s in the prize vault, but we’ll find something. For the record, from left to right, you’ve got Chris Davis, Matt Harrison, Elvis Andrus, Taylor Teagarden and Derek Holland.
I just made a surprise appearance at the ballyard in Surprise, Arizona. Evan Grant was so surprised to see me, he almost grew a head of hair. I walked into the press box as he was walking out. He was very flustered and panicked. I asked him where he was going but he didn’t have to speak, I know that look–a man in love and on his way to pick up a special someone. It’s going to happen folks. Cherry limeades all around. Let’s play ball!
There are plenty of X’s and O’s baseball to discuss this afternoon. Kris Benson got lit up by Oakland, essentially eliminating any slim chance he had at making the Opening Day roster. Hank Blalock couldn’t handle the first ball hit to him upon his return to third base. There is a lot to talk about, but in the Rangers dugout today there are topics much more important.
Everybody wants to get up close and personal with Carson Leslie.
Sometimes baseball takes a backseat, even in the dugout. Today is one of those days. Carson is a 16-year-old Covenant School sophomore, who also just happens to be engaged in the kind of fight nobody deserves in their lifetime. Much less twice in two years. But Carson Leslie soldiers on. He was at spring training Thursday, courtesy of Young, with whom he’s struck up a friendship through their connection with the Wipe Out Kids Cancer charity. It’s the charity work that helped make Young the MLB Players Association’s Marvin Miller Man of the Year for 2008.
You know you are a big-time sports blog/website when you start getting official press releases about events. And you know you are really big time when you just start ignoring them. But we here at The Corner are nothing if not attentive to the needs of the North Texas Lacrosse Playing Community (NTLPC or Nottlepuck, if you prefer). Anyway, a bunch of high school and college lacrossters are descending on SMU’s Ford Stadium this weekend for the Patriot Cup, an event that benefits the Wounded Warrior Project.
